And knowing that it is all part of a conservation programme makes even better. I could not recommend this more highly! Read more Written November 11, 2023
  • dizzyjulie72 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Conservation sanctuary is the best way to describe this wonderful place The conservation site is truly exceptional, with well-cared-for lions in a picturesque, 25-acre natural setting. The highlight of my visit was the boys who excitedly come to feed the lions. They rush over to where you're standing, at a safe and secure spot approximately 7-10 meters away from the lions. This is an absolute must-do experience. In addition to the lions, we had the opportunity to walk with and get up close to hyenas, interact with rescued birds, and encounter two ostriches. Interestingly, there are three ostriches, but the male is currently incubating some eggs. It's a unique and unforgettable wildlife adventure. Read more Written October 13, 2023

The animals are not wild in the true sense, however we did get up very close to some lions, hyenas and ostriches. Got some great photos and memories. Doing great work there. • idp001 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles An encounter well worth taking We initially booked this tour to as it was advertised that you walk with lions. Unfortunately that does not happen anymore, but the tour nonetheless was well worth it. We saw lions roaming in the park and watched the lions feeding which was the most incredible experience to see up so close through a dug out viewing area. We were able to get out of the vehicle and be up close and personal with the Hyena’s. This was amazing and totally safe. We also fed ostriches which was a fun experience. Pick up and drop off from our lodge and a delicious breakfast were included in our visit. If you have the opportunity to take this tour, do it! Read more Written September 1, 2023
  • 195bushbunny 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Fantastic experience This was a fantastic experience. Getting outside the vehicle and having our photos taken with the hyenas was awesome, and at all times during the experience we felt completely safe! The highlight for me was seeing 3 mighty lions come running flat out for there feed, and getting to see them at there level; thanks to the dugout viewing area…I mean they were right there in front of us! The vehicle provided perfect photo opportunity- the Hyena walk was great. • John D 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Liontastic! They don't do the walking with lions anymore, but the time we had there was amazing. You are very well looked after and the groups are small, so it feels more special. The enclosure was amazing, but the lion feeding was incredible. You are just a few feet from them. Incredible. We also saw and learnt about hyenas. Totally recommend Read more Written August 14, 2022

  • lvcolombo 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Lion Encounter The feeding of the big cats was amazing and I doubt you will ever be able to see it anywhere else. AMAZING. What wasn't amazing was our guide. He was trying to get up close to the lions with the vehicle to get them to move for a photo op. NOT cool. We kept telling him it was good enough but not for him. The lions didn't want to get up, but he pushed. The other thing was the guide bullied my husband at the end of tour for better tip. We gave $20 for a 2 hour tour and he wanted more. NOT cool. Then at then end they gave us a survey to fill out and stood there while you were trying to fill it out. NOT cool again, uncomfortable. So in my husband's eyes the NOT cool outweighed the COOL. But the COOL was the feeding. Read more Written July 11, 2022

However, the feeding of the male lions was superb. To see the power of these majestic animals was just amazing. I could watch and listen to them all day. They may not offer the walk any longer, but this is a fantastic replacement. Read more Written September 27, 2021
  • Bidule005 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Unique and unforgettable experience!!! We visited the African Lion & Environmental Research Trust in October 2018. It is located close to Victoria Falls town. The driver picked us at our hotel to the research trust, where we could walk with lion cubs. Because lions are endangered in Zimbabwe, after 24 months-old, the lions are released safely in a reserve where there are few lions, where they are checked all the time by rangers, to be sure that they are able to hunt and to live safely in the wildlife. CONGRATULATIONS!!! At the arrival, we saw a video explaining us the aims of the trust, and the reasons why they have planned to release lions in the wildlife. It was very interesting!!! You can ask all the questions to the rangers after the video. After, we were allowed to walk with rangers with two 13-months old lions (brother and sister) and to have a contact activity; we were a small group of 9 persons. It was a unique and unforgettable experience!!! Altogether, I highly recommend to visit the trust to support lions survival in the wildlife in Zimbabwe! I'll come back as a volunteer! • Terrytrav777 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles An amazing experience It was a truly remarkable experience, they're making good conservation efforts and at the same time educating people on the importance of lion and human peaceful cohabitation. The lions appeared to be healthy looking (well fed, good fur, growing quite well as compared to the ones I always see on nat geo wild) and not stressed. The guides knew what they were talking about and I applaud they way they always handled the lions in such a non violent non aggressive way. Overall I truly enjoyed my time with the guides and the lions. Read more Written March 22, 2020
  • M7012GProberts 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles See It before Its Gone The opportunities to spend quality time with big cats is rapidly disappearing. The various movements in favor of prohibiting physical encounters with wildlife are ascendant and Zimbabwe's lion education centers are not immune to the pressure (even before the Cecil controversy). At the Lion Encounter you will experience a walk with two of four young cats (less than 2 years old) who remain in the encounter program while awaiting release into a conversation reserve elsewhere. The cats will never be "wild" but they are not "tame" either. At best they are socialized. That is why the walk is accompanied by no fewer than 4 handlers to manage the two cats and the guests while another gives the presentation and yet another makes a video for the group to purchase later. It is an important source of funds to have foreign visitors present, and all that they do to protect the cats from human contact is done (hand sanitizer, physical distance, perfumes and odor bans). The draw of the big cats is really irresistible for most people, myself included, and always there is one person who is scared to death. The small group size helps (10 or fewer), and the short walking distance also helps with creating a casual (appearing) interaction with these charming animals. Read more Written March 8, 2020
  • Wanderer517302 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Walking With Lions At the end of my month long trip to Africa a friend and I decided to walk with the lions at Lion Encounter Zimbabwe. It was an amazing experience to be able to pet and walk side by side with two juvenile lions. I always felt completely safe because there were many handlers to guide not only the lions but ourselves as well. It had been raining and the lions were extremely playful, frisky and full of energy. We also opted to do the feeding of the large male lions which was an experience all on it's own. In a concrete bunker you are separated from the large male lions and their piles of meat. One of the lions charged at us and the fence we were behind. To come within inches of an aggressive male lion protecting his meal was not only terrifying but exhilarating as well. Wow! This is experience is not a roadside adventure where the animals are drugged and abused. This is a very positive experience and you can see that the animals are well taken care of and loved. The money made goes into conservation of these majestic creatures and helps aid in releasing them back into the wild. It is a reputable establishment and an adventure I highly recommend. I am not sure it is for young children, that would make me a bit nervous as young children can be as unpredictable as lions. If you are ever in Zimbabwe near Victoria Falls do this adventure! Zimbabwe Photography Tour

For photography enthusiasts, Zimbabwe offers many stunning locations ideal for capturing captivating images. The best locations for photography in Zimbabwe include Victoria Falls, Chobe National Park, and the Zambezi River, each providing unique settings for photography enthusiasts to explore and capture through their lens.

The ideal season for a photography tour in Zimbabwe is during the dry season, typically from May to October. This is when the vegetation is less dense, and wildlife is concentrated around water sources, providing excellent opportunities for photography.

When planning a photography tour in Zimbabwe, it’s essential to be aware of any specific photography rules or restrictions in certain areas to ensure a respectful and compliant photography experience.

National Park and Zambezi River Photography

The National Park and Zambezi River present many photographic opportunities, from capturing the diverse wildlife to the stunning landscapes and changing light conditions. Wildlife, such as elephants, buffalos, and an assortment of bird species, can be captured against the backdrop of the Zambezi River, creating spectacular compositions for photography enthusiasts.

Choosing the best angles and viewpoints for photography in the National Park and along the Zambezi River is essential for capturing the essence of the landscape. To ensure the best photographic outcomes, seeking guidance from experienced photographers or local experts is advisable.

Prepare to adapt to the changing light conditions along the Zambezi River by equipping yourself with the necessary photography tools, such as filters, and adjusting camera settings to capture the dynamic natural environment perfectly.

Sunrise Photography over Victoria Falls

Sunrise over the Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe

Capturing the sunrise over Victoria Falls presents a captivating and awe-inspiring photographic opportunity. Critical considerations for capturing this natural wonder include determining the ideal vantage points and planning for the dynamic lighting conditions during sunrise.

Several tour operators offer specialised sunrise photography experiences designed to capitalise on the stunning morning light and the ethereal beauty of the falls. Participating in these tours provides access to exclusive photography opportunities and expert guidance from professional photographers.

To fully utilise the lighting during a sunrise photography tour, photographers can experiment with exposure settings and composition techniques to create visually striking images that convey the grandeur of the sun rising over Victoria Falls.

Guided Tour of the Falls

Exploring the awe-inspiring Victoria Falls through a guided tour unveils a range of must-see vantage points that provide ideal settings for photography. For photography enthusiasts, there are specialised tours tailored to capture the intricate beauty of Victoria Falls, allowing for an immersive photography experience.

Falls Park has several viewing points that most tourists visit, but a professional photography tour or workshop will reveal some hidden spots that may provide a unique perspective and shot.

The best times of day to photograph the falls depend on individual preferences and lighting conditions. However, both early morning and late afternoon offer favourable lighting for capturing the falls in their full splendour.

WILDLIFE PHOTOGRAPHY AND CONSERVATION PROGRAM, VICTORIA FALLS

  • DESTINATION
  • PHOTOGRAPHY
  • WORKSHOP LEADER

Sharpen your wildlife photography skills & support conservation projects.

Travel to Zimbabwe, stay in a wildlife-filled area on the banks of the Zambezi, develop your photography skills with practical and theoretical training, and all the while contribute to raising awareness for wildlife conservation projects.

This program sends you to a game reserve in Fuller Forest, bordering Zambezi National Park. Here, you’ll hone your craft with a camera, using lions, hyenas, elephants, eagles, and many more animals as your subjects. You’ll be led on daily photographic workshops and sanctuary projects with professional photographers, who will teach you the ins and outs of wildlife photography.

As a bonus, you’ll have the chance to take on real-world assignments for the wildlife sanctuary documenting various initiatives. You might get the chance to work with local NGOs the sanctuary’s partnered with too. Your work could be used for vital awareness and fundraising drives. So you’ll get to see what it’s like to be a jobbing photographer and contribute to local conservation efforts.

On top of all this, you’ll be based a short drive from the adventure capital of Africa, Victoria Falls! Not only does this come with the opportunity to take incredible photographs of the impressive falls, but also to horse ride along the Zambezi River, tour the area by helicopter, or explore the river on a cruise or canoeing trip (flanked by hippos and elephants!).

This wildlife photography course offers amazing flexibility, as it runs through the year. Photographers of any level can join, and you can take part for 2 to 12 weeks.

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS

  • Great wildlife photography
  • Learn about wildlife conservation
  • Photographic tutoring by professional
  • Stay near the Victoria Falls
  • Interesting photography assignments

wildlife photography program Victoria Falls

THE DESTINATION

Photographers on this program live and work on a private wildlife reserve and sanctuary bordering Zambezi National Park, a park that is home to a wealth of wildlife, including elephants, lions, leopards, zebras, giraffes, hippos, and many different species of antelope. Set on the river Zambezi, the park is a sanctuary natural setting for photography, and an incredible place to explore.

Staying at the sanctuary also means unique photographic opportunities of animals that are rescues or part of other conservation initiatives. At the moment, there are lions, spotted hyenas, and a number of smaller animals. You’ll have a chance to observe and photograph them from up close. You’ll also have a chance to get involved with the day-to-day running of a wildlife sanctuary and help document exciting projects.

As if this weren’t enough, you’ll be only moments away from Victoria Falls. So, you’ll come away from this program with a versatile portfolio of landscape and wildlife photography. The adventurous among you can try white water rafting, bungee jumping, or a helicopter ride over the falls. Those who enjoy a slower pace can enjoy river cruises, hikes, and world-class safaris.

ACCOMMODATION

You’ll stay at the wildlife sanctuary’s volunteer village; a tented camps that’s set within a private forest estate. The camp consists of a collection of traditional safari tents – permanent tents with plenty of room inside and comfortable beds. The tents house 4 to 6 people, though if you’d prefer a private tent, just enquire with us about single supplement options. Bathrooms are shared and have warm showers. The camp has a communal lounge overlooking the watering hole, so you can often spot wildlife coming to drink.

wildlife photography program

THE PHOTOGRAPHY

There’s plenty to point a camera at during this Wildlife Photography Program. First of all, staying in a wildlife sanctuary grants you unrestricted access to the resident animals and a wonderful setting for you to practice your photography. You’ll also head out on regular game drives in Zambezi National Park (generally two half days a week) for close encounters with the wildlife, especially the lions and hyenas.

A unique bonus to this program is that as well as photographing the wildlife, you’ll have a chance to document the exciting work being done at the sanctuary. You’ll be set assignments and sent out into the field to gather valuable images to be used by the organizations for marketing and educational purposes. In addition, you might help run a photography club for kids at a local school.

Then, there’s the stunning scenery and landscapes of the area, not to mention, the spectacular Victoria Falls. And, all the while you’ll be under the expert guidance of seasoned wildlife photography pros.

ITINERARY: WHAT AN AVERAGE WEEK LOOKS LIKE

Your average week begins with a photo op for anti poaching activities, capturing flora and fauna and the volunteers working to protect them. This is followed by a photography class with one of your guides, before you head out to photograph and identify bird species as part of a scientific bird survey. Finally, you end the day taking in the stars with an astro photography workshop.

After an early start, you’ll spend the entire morning on a game drive. This will be an incredible opportunity to capture spotted hyenas, lions, and elephants as the sun rises over Zambezi National Park. In the afternoon, you’ll debrief from the game drive and share your best pics with the group. The evening will be spent winding down around the campfire.

You’ll have another exciting opportunity to get involved with conservation research. At the start of your day, you’ll assist with camera trap data collection, then head back to sort and edit what you find. After this, you’ll continue with a class on more advanced editing techniques. After lunch you’ll take on your first NGO assignments, which can vary depending on which projects are available with which partners at the time. In the evening you’ll head out and assist with another scientific survey, this time on nocturnal species.

Your day kicks off with a unique opportunity to photograph Zambezi birdlife at the reserve’s own dam. You’ll then head back to edit the photos you’ve taken with continued guidance from your photography managers. Once you’ve finished editing, you’ll be on game drives for the rest of the day. You’ll take a tour of some of the national parks’ choice destinations for wildlife photography in the afternoon.

It’s time to make the most of this program’s location and take your camera to Victoria Falls. You’ll have a workshop on landscape photography and how to capture the immensity and minutia of the falls. This is followed by another workshop, this time on high speed photography. You’ll head to a vulture feeding to capture the birds in flight. The working week might end with an optional excursion into town to enjoy a meal at one of Victoria Falls many renowned restaurants.

Saturday and Sunday

Saturday morning is spent catching up with any final editing then uploading your photography to their online photography bank. The rest of the weekend is your own. You could spend it taking in one of the many attractions or activities in the area such as bungee jumps, sunset cruises, white water rafting or hikes. Alternatively you could spend your time resting up for the exciting week ahead.

This project takes place at Zambezi and Victoria Falls National Parks in Zimbabwe, which are undoubtedly among the most impressive wildlife areas in Southern Africa and offer some of the most spectacular photographic opportunities.

The Victoria Falls National Park, comprising 23 kilometers of riverine jungle, provides a tranquil setting from which to view the five cascades of Mosi-oa-Tunya – the smoke that thunders. Bushbucks and troops of baboons can frequently be spotted along the walkways, and depending on the season, spray from the Falls creates magnificent rainbows. Also dependent on the season, it is possible to view a lunar rainbow over the Falls during a full-moon. The Victoria Falls National Park is both a UNESCO World Heritage Site, as well as home to four of the five African Big 5 species.

The 56,200 hectare Zambezi National Park, home to a lot of big game, stretches along the Zambezi River for 40 kilometers. Animals include big-game such as elephants, buffalos and lions, larger antelope species such as greater kudus, sables and waterbucks, along with a large number of smaller mammal species including duikers, genets and honey badgers.

Volunteer Work

Throughout your stay, you will be participating in various research-based activities where you will also have the opportunity to improve your photography. Your day will be split between conservation/research and photography, but normally you will be able to take pictures throughout. Depending on the season, you may be involved in the following activities. Please note that some activities, and some research methodologies, are seasonal and you may not be able to take part in every activity during your stay.

Large Predator Research: The Zambezi National Park is home to lions, leopards, cheetahs, African wild dogs, and spotted hyenas. Your role will be to assist in collecting baseline data on each species that is used to improve species conservation management plans. Data collection is undertaken by a variety of means, including driven transects, observations at water holes, remote camera traps, baited call-in stations and community questionnaires. When animals are sighted you will attempt to take photographic evidence for individual identification and will record the GPS location, as well as other information useful to the research effort.

Other Wildlife Research: To complement the large predator research, you will assist in monitoring the number and distribution of other species within the park, such as giraffes. Data is collected by driven transect surveys on historically used routes to allow for comparison over time.

National Park Management: You will be assisting the park’s staff in many aspects of management, including invasive alien plant species removal, waterhole and fire management programs, snare sweeps, creating maps for visitors to the park, as well as helping out in the park’s offices with general administrative duties and visitor management. Entomological Survey: We hope you enjoy insects! This research program is trying to understand the complex relationships between the vast array of insects and the even greater array of plants and trees within the parks. You will lay out traps and assist in identifying what we catch.

Conservation Education (Seasonal): A vital part of your role will be assisting with our outreach programs with the local community. These programs help increase support for conservation efforts. You will therefore be assisting in preparing lesson plans which you will later teach in some of the local schools.

A typical day: At 6:00 am you’ll depart the base to photography wildlife or landscape in the early morning light. After returning to the base for breakfast at 9:00 am, you’ll get involved with conservation or research activities. At noon, lunch will be served before you head back out into the field at 2:00 pm to assist the park rangers in data collection. At 4:30 pm, it’s back to taking photos as the sun starts to set. Dinner is served at 6:30 pm, and you have the rest of the evening free to spend as you wish.

Why is Victoria Falls a good place for a photographic Tour ?

The virtually constant rainbows that the spray produces are one of the best attractions. These can be difficult to photograph, especially during particular seasons of the year. Photographing the falls at sunrise and sunset is also a spectacular experience and you can choose to do one or both.

The Sunrise Photographic Tour Of The Falls

Duration: Approximately 1.5 hours

When is it available: From early February to mid-September.

Around 5:30 am, a driver picks you up from your hotel and transports you to Victoria Falls National Park (to arrive at 6 am at the National Park entrance gate). Your photographic tour guide is here.

Arriving early to the park gives you enough time to penetrate the rainforest and prepare for the ideal sunrise shot.

The most of your time is spent taking pictures of the breath-taking scene of the sun rising over the falls.

Your tour guide leads you to the ideal photogenic vantage points and offers tips on how to shoot the finest shots given the angles, lighting, and settings of your camera.

Here, there is a waterfall, a rainforest, sun, and spray, which provides for some beautiful pictures. The Victoria Falls photo trip concludes at 8 a.m., and you have the choice to have breakfast in the rainforest café before the driver takes you back to your hotel or lodge.

Photographic Rainbow Tour of the Falls

Duration: 1.5 hours

When is it available: Throughout the year

The Victoria Falls and its renowned Rainbows are the primary subjects of this excursion. Beautiful rainbows are produced as the spray (water vapour) rises from the gorge below and catches the light. However, this will only occur at specific times of day and from specific vantage locations. You will be shown the greatest vantage locations to capture rainbows during this tour.

1 p.m.: Meet at the National Parks Entrance Gate; you'll have enough time to observe the falls and go to the best viewing areas at this time.

2:30 to 3:30 p.m. spend the day taking pictures from various angles that have been chosen as the finest ones for capturing rainbows.
