There are 2 main things to consider when comparing NBN business plans:

  • Good to know: To sign up for a business NBN plan, you'll just need a valid Australian Business Number (ABN).

Business internet plan features vary by provider, but in general, you can find the following features:

Normally, you get a new IP address every time you connect to the network, but a static IP stays the same. Most providers include it for free on business internet plans.

  • Why this matters: Static IPs are vital for hosting a website internally or if you have workers accessing your network remotely (via VPN and so on).

Extra support and priority

Business plans usually include extra support in the form of a 24/7 call line or dedicated account manager.

  • Why this matters: Support for residential plans can leave you in a call queue for ages. Priority support means your problem can be solved faster so you can get back online and back to business quicker.

Enhanced Service Level Agreement (eSLA)

Providers with eSLAs purchase extra support from NBN Co itself and pass that extra service on to you.

eSLAs specify a time frame and method for problems to be resolved as well as what happens if your service falls short. Residential plans don't have these.

  • Why this matters: eSLAs help ensure your business will be back up and running quickly after a problem.

You'll have different speed requirements depending on the size of your company and how much you'll be using the internet.

Where a regular Australian can get away with using NBN 50 for personal use, small businesses may prefer to use NBN 100 to ensure they're getting fast enough speeds.

According to the ACCC, the NBN 50 speed tier is the most popular in Australia for personal use. Its download speeds are fast enough to handle video conferencing and with enough upload speed to use cloud storage like Google Drive or Dropbox without too much hassle.

The NBN 100 speed tier is typically a great fit for families of 4+ people and that extends to small business users.

However, if your business requires regular video conferencing or uploads a lot of data, pay attention to upload speeds when comparing plans. NBN 100 plans can come with either 20Mbps or 40Mbps upload speeds.

A NBN 100/40 plan may cost you a bit more, but can come in very handy if multiple people are in Zoom meetings at the same time.

  • Team size : 5–7 people

More people means less bandwidth to share. On a 250Mbps plan, you should be able to download large files simultaneously and have no issues with video conferencing.

The only limiting factor is your connection type. Your business will need to be connected to the NBN via FTTP or HFC , which is not the case in all parts of Australia.

  • Team size : 25–30

NBN 1000 is the fastest NBN speed you can get in Australia, but it is also limited to businesses with either an FTTP or some HFC connections.

On an NBN 1000 plan, large teams of up to 30 people should be able to collaborate, download and upload files without any problems.

Keep in mind:

  • Some providers like Aussie Broadband offer plans with customised speeds that sit outside of the regular speed tiers. For example, Aussie's Pro NBN plan has maximum download speeds of 500Mbps and maximum upload speeds of 200Mbps.
  • If your company has more than 30 employees, it may be best to contact your provider about an NBN enterprise plan.

A business mobile broadband plan could be the right fit for sole traders, remote workers or anyone who needs to be able to access the internet on the go in different settings.

The following are some of the benefits of a business mobile broadband plan compared to an NBN plan:

  • 5G access. 5G may be able to provide speeds faster than what you can get via NBN.
  • Portability. Because it's not a fixed connection, you could run your business from the beach, cafe or remote site. Plus a variety of modems will fit in your pocket or work bag.
  • Data sharing. Compared to a residential mobile broadband plan, some providers offer data sharing for businesses. This means you can share your data with other members of the team.

But there are also a few cons:

  • Limited 5G network. 5G is still being rolled out and isn't as widely available as 4G. It works best in major cities.
  • Less data. Some mobile broadband plans come with less data than an NBN plan and for a higher price.
  • Device repayments. While not overly expensive month-to-month, the device repayment for a mobile broadband modem can be an additional cost to pay over a 12-, 24- or 36-month repayment period.

Like its residential plans, Telstra's business NBN plans come at a premium. It offers NBN 50 and NBN 100 plans. You get the following:

  • 4G mobile broadband backup. If the NBN goes down, your Telstra Smart Modem will automatically switch over to the Telstra 4G network to keep you connected. Unlike a regular Telstra home internet plan , you'll get full 4G speeds instead of being capped at 25/5Mbps.
  • Dedicated NBN connection manager. When you sign up with Telstra, you'll have a connection manager to work with for a pre-connection assessment, updates on your order and a post-connection check-in.
  • Included calls. You get unlimited calls to standard landlines and mobiles in Australia.

Without any promotional discounts, Telstra business NBN plans come out to be about $25-$30 more expensive than the average business plan on Finder.

TPG NBN business plans

TPG sells business NBN bundles to small companies. It offers speeds of NBN 12, 50 and 100Mbps, all of which come with a static IP. You also get the following:

  • Choice of 500GB or unlimited data plan. If you don't need unlimited data, you can save $10 a month by opting for the 500GB option on the NBN 50 or NBN 100 plans.
  • Phone line with unlimited standard national calls. Available on NBN 50 and 100 speed tiers. You can pay $10 more on the unlimited data plan for unlimited national calls to mobiles.
  • Choice of contract term. If you choose to sign on for an 18-month contract, you won't need to pay the $99.95 set-up fee. Otherwise, pay the fee and you'll be on a no-lock-in contract.
  • Dedicated business support. TPG has a dedicated support team for small office and business customers to better support you with your business-related enquiries.

In terms of price, TPG's unlimited data business NBN plans are slightly above the average, being around $3-$5 a month more expensive. If you opt for limited data, those plans come in $5 - $8 cheaper than the average business plan in our database.

Optus NBN plans for business are in line with the average cost of business NBN plans on Finder.

You won't get a static IP by default, but you may be able to add one for $10 a month. Static IPs are not available to customers who use the Optus Cable Broadband network.

In terms of the base plan prices, its NBN 25 and 50 plans are cheaper than the average on Finder, while its NBN 100 plan is in line with the average. Its NBN 250 plan is $50 more expensive than the average business plan on Finder, but you do get a higher upload speed than most NBN 250 plans. It is one of only 2 providers to offer a 500Mbps typical business hours speed, which might help if you require more speed than NBN 250, but don't need NBN 1000, especially as that latter plan is just over $200 a month more expensive than the average. Keep in mind though Aussie Broadband's NBN 1000 business plan offers the highest average upload speed of all providers (around 8 times faster), so this is something to consider if very fast upload speeds are required for your business.

How much does business nbn cost.

Business NBN plans on Finder start from $59 per month but can go all the way up to over $400 per month, depending on what speed you're after.

Business NBN plans tend to be more expensive than residential plans. The difference is less notable on the lower speed tiers from NBN 12 to 100, with the average business plans being $6–$13 more expensive. On an NBN 250 or 1000 plan, the difference is much greater being between about $35–$70 more expensive on average.

Can I get a business internet plan for my home?

Yes, if you have your own business and you work from home, you can sign up for a business NBN plan. You'll just need to provide your ABN.

Are NBN business plans faster than residential plans?

Technically, no. NBN business plans offer the same speed and performance as residential NBN plans. On a network level, everything is the same – NBN Co doesn't distinguish between the two.

However, typical download speeds could be faster on business internet plans than on residential plans but this varies by provider.

The main difference is that retailers offer business NBN customers extra features like a static IP and priority service and service guarantees they don't offer to residential customers.

What is the difference between a business NBN plan and a business NBN enterprise Ethernet plan?

An NBN enterprise Ethernet plan is designed for larger businesses or those that require up to 1000Mbps upload and download speeds. A business NBN plan, on the other hand, is much more like a residential NBN plan in terms of speed tiers and performance, but with extra features and support.

we run a small business from home, we already have the NBN box & everything but I want to know who is the best for Value & we want to keep our home number & fax number (for the business) but we also want our mobiles & Ipad & my kids phones (limited for the kids) all on the same plan. does anyone do that?

We have made several attempts to initiate the process of establishing an nbn  network connection to your building, however we have been unsuccessful in our engagement with the building’s authorised representative. Consequently, nbn does not currently plan to install a network connection to your building, unless we receive a request from the Owners’ Corporation.

If you currently use existing fixed line phone or internet services there are a number of implications to be aware of:

  • Critical copper services such as emergency lift phones and monitored fire alarm systems may be at risk of disconnection.*
  • Occupiers may not be able to continue to access other critical services connected to the existing Fixed Line networks such as medical alarms and emergency call systems, monitored security alarms and fax machines. ^
  • Existing fixed line services will be disconnected at a future date and occupiers will not be able to make phone calls or access the internet over the Fixed Line network unless the nbn  supplied equipment is installed at the property. The disconnection of existing Fixed Line services will not affect occupier's ability to access phone and internet services over mobile networks.
  • Future requests for an nbn  network connection will result in costs payable by the Owners Corporation and/or owners/occupiers.

However, if your phone and internet services are already provided via another fibre network, they will continue to operate as normal unless your provider advises otherwise.

nbn strongly recommends that you contact your current provider of phone and internet services, or visit www.nbn.com.au/switchoff for more information about whether your services will be impacted by the rollout of the nbn  network. #

How many business nbn fibre zones are there?

In September 2020, nbn announced the creation of 240 business nbn  fibre zones as part of our $700m investment in network development. Demonstrating our ongoing commitment to Australian businesses, nbn recently announced a new zones, bringing the total to 322. We will be continuing to add further business nbn  fibre zones through our co-investment programs and ongoing work with other Government entities.

nbn may also announce further business nbn  fibre zones in the future to help meet the demand around the country.

Can additional locations or areas become business nbn fibre zones and gain access to the offers in these zones?

Regardless of the bandwidth profile for the service you acquire from your service provider, it will operate at less than 10Gbps (or, in some circumstances, less than 1Gbps, if that bandwidth profile is acquired) because of normal equipment and network limitations. In addition, your experience, including the speeds actually achieved over the nbn network, depends on some factors outside our control (like your equipment quality, software, and how your service provider designs its network). If your service provider has not selected Class of Service High, speeds you experience may be affected by contention on the nbn network, particularly in busy periods.

These wholesale service features are offered to service providers. The service options providers make available to their end customers depend on what they have productised and the retail solutions they offer.

nbn  is a wholesaler and does not control costs charged by service providers. The bottom line: The best high-speed internet provider for small businesses is Verizon .  Verizon does a great job ensuring affordable prices, fast speeds, and customer service. Verizon customer service outranks all other competitors. 

Every business is different, though, and there are excellent brands other than Verizon that also might meet your more specific needs or concerns. We recommend Frontier for best budget, AT&T for speed, and Comcast for tech support. Of course, your business is outside of the city and in more of a rural area, we recommend Viasat .

Verizon: Overall best for high-speed business internet

Verizon serves up the best combination of business internet speeds, reliability, and support.

Although Verizon sells a few business DSL plans, none have speeds at 25Mbps or more. For truly fast speeds, fiber is hard to beat. Verizon's fiber plans, branded Fios, offer you a chance at near-gigabit connections.

What do we mean by “near gigabit”? Verizon’s fastest plan—Fios Gigabit Connection—gives you maximum download speeds of 940Mbps with upload speeds up to 880Mbps. That’s lightning fast by today’s standards, but it doesn’t quite reach 1,000Mbps, the true definition of gigabit speed. Yet with fiber plans that consistently meet the speeds Verizon advertises, and then some , we’ll let that bit of fudging slide.

Another feather in Verizon’s cap is its customer service. We understand that most internet providers have poor reputations. But the fact that industry-rating juggernaut J.D. Power gave Verizon second place for customer satisfaction among small to medium-sized businesses should give you warmer feelings.

Verizon’s fastest plan is priced at about $249 per month. That may be a bit expensive for some very small businesses, but it’s far better than the nearly $500 that Comcast charges for gigabit speeds.

Many Verizon plans offer symmetric speeds, which means you get the same speed for downloads and uploads. Fast upload speeds can significantly improve activities that require sending data from your device, including videoconferencing in real time and uploading large files to cloud storage.

One gripe: contracts. While some ISPs—like Spectrum and AT&T—offer contract-free plans, Verizon uses a 12-month agreement that renews automatically. It’s not the worst thing in the world, but it’s something you should know in advance.

The bottom line: Verizon Fios offers an impressive array of high-speed internet plans to fit businesses of just about any size.

Now for Frontier’s major shortcomings. Frontier’s customers lodge a lot of complaints against the internet service provider. One common grievance is high latency. Latency, which refers to data transfer delay time, can cause serious headaches for businesses that require fast and reliable connections. Activities like video streaming are at risk of disruption from high latency.

Despite customer service and reliability concerns, you should consider Frontier if getting a low price for high-speed plans is your No. 1 priority.

Even with its improved technology, Viasat does still have data limits. It doesn’t use hard data caps—that is, Viasat won’t simply switch off your internet after you use all your data—but it will throttle (slow) your internet if you use more than your allotted daily data. Spectrum, a Charter Communications brand, provides cable internet to U.S. businesses. Where Spectrum falters is its upload speeds. Cable technology limits how much upstream heft you can get, and Spectrum’s plans can get you up to only 20Mbps upstream.

Another trouble spot is customer service. Spectrum has been embroiled in legal troubles for the last few years, especially in the state of New York, where it failed to follow through on service promises made with its acquisition of Time Warner Cable. We’re keeping an eye on the situation— poor customer satisfaction could knock Spectrum down in our books.

But if you’re outside of New York or less bothered by poor customer service ratings, Spectrum cable Internet appears as a rosy alternative to expensive DSL and fiber providers that lock you into lengthy contracts.

Speed and bandwidth: How much do you need?

Speed and bandwidth are another two more ambiguously used terms in internet parlance. But we can define them a bit clearer than broadband internet and high-speed internet.

  • Speed is the rate at which an internet connection transmits data from one end to the other. Measured in bits per second, most modern high-speed internet speeds range between 25 megabits (about 1 million bits) and 1 gigabit (about 1,000 megabits) per second.
  • Bandwidth refers to the maximum capacity of a connection to carry internet data. Although ISPs often use speed to market their plans, they’re actually selling bandwidth. For example, a 100Mbps plan has the capacity to deliver data at 100 megabits per second. But beware—you may not actually experience the advertised speed all the time.

Now back to the question: How much speed or bandwidth do you actually need? The answer depends on the type and frequency of internet activity your business engages in on a day-to-day basis.

While guidelines on speed use vary, here’s our recommendation for the speed you’ll need to run your business smoothly.

What else should you consider when choosing business internet providers.

Price and speed. That’s what matters when it comes to choosing a business internet provider, right?

Well, not entirely. The truth is that unless you have an unlimited budget (who does?) or run a supremely data-heavy business (not likely), you’ll have other factors to consider. Here are the ones we focus on.

  • Connection type: Depending on your business’s location, connection type may be a key consideration. Some areas may have only a few internet connection choices—or even just one.
  • Customer and industry ratings: Customer reviews of internet providers tend toward the hellish. But remember that businesses often have different experiences than residential customers. Make sure you understand how a potential ISP handles business customer complaints and concerns.
  • Fees: Your customers hate hidden fees, and so should you. Check to see if you’ll be paying your provider extra for things like installation, static IPs, or early termination.
  • Bundles: Most internet providers offer special deals for packaging more than one service under the same roof. Whether phone or VoIP or TV, consider bundles as a way to shave off some extra cost when you need several services.
  • Data caps: You’ll run into limits on the amount of data you can use most often with satellite and wireless providers. It can be costly or disruptive to exceed these caps, so ensure you pick an internet plan that can accommodate your data needs.
  • Cloud, security, and software services: From backing up your precious business data to running email, accounting, and e-commerce applications, many ISPs include or offer special rates on software and cloud-based services.
  • Hardware: Each internet type requires a unique set of equipment to get up and running. Some setups are simple—just a modem connected to an office cable line. But others, like satellite internet, may require hefty hardware—and hefty costs too.

High-speed internet FAQs

"Broadband" and "high-speed internet" are somewhat murky terms that not everyone defines equally. But here's what we use: in 2015, the FCC defined broadband service as any connection that provides customers with download speeds of at least 25Mbps. 

There’s no indisputable definition of high-speed internet. In fact, internet service providers attach the term to just about any plan, regardless of speed.

What’s more, the terms broadband internet and high-speed internet are often used interchangeably, further confusing things.

But why the confusion? Well, consider how the technology has evolved. Even the slowest plans featured in this article would have been considered blazingly fast in 2008—and much more so in 1998. So even if everyone did sit down and agree to a singular definition of high-speed internet, that definition would have to change every few years.

With that in mind, look for internet that’s fast enough for your needs rather than just high-speed internet. We’ll look at speeds in-depth in a minute.

Broadband more appropriately refers to any internet type that isn’t a dial-up connection. Essentially, broadband’s debut marks the age at which most of us moved on from the days of modems that tied up our phone lines to dial into internet provider companies like AOL. And what an age that was (we still hear the screeching modem sounds in our dreams).

Today, broadband internet generally includes any “always on” cable, DSL, fiber-optic, and even high-speed satellite internet connection. But not every plan operates at truly high speeds. So to compare internet providers, we decided to use the FCC’s 2015 guidelines on broadband internet speeds , which set the minimum at a 25Mbps downstream.

Most small to midsize businesses can operate well at 25Mbps or more. Of course, as speeds get faster, even this current definition will start to seem slow. And the FCC may change its mind on minimum broadband standards. We’ll update you as necessary.

High-speed broadband internet connections encompass plans from a variety of service providers and connection types. Depending on your area, you may have access to several of these or just one.

  • Cable: This connection uses the same modems and coaxial cables that deliver cable TV, so cable internet is widely available in most well-populated areas.
  • Digital subscriber line (DSL):  These may be sent via phone lines, but DSL connections are faster and more reliable than the phone-based dial-up internet of yesteryear.
  • Fiber:  Fiber-optic networks beam light through glass or plastic bundles of wires—each wire the size of a human hair— and these connections offer some of the fastest internet speeds on the planet.
  • Satellite: For rural businesses without access to land-based broadband, satellite internet is like an internet angel sent to earth by planet-orbiting stations.
  • Wireless: Whether through hotspots, cellular signals, or fixed radio towers, wireless internet provides options for remote and traveling businesses.

Telstra has announced plans to build two new fibre network infrastructure projects across Australia.

The telco was tapped by US-based satellite broadband firm Viasat to build and manage its ground infrastructure and fibre network in Australia as part of a 16.5-year contract. The network will support Viasat’s new ViaSat-3 terabit-class global satellite system.

Telstra will also build a new network for inter-city dual fibre paths to add some 20,000 new route kilometres to increase the capacity of the telco’s existing fibre networks.

The projects are expected to cost Telstra between $1.4-1.6 billion outside of its business-as-usual capex envelope over the next five years.

Telstra chief executive Andrew Penn said the two projects “recognised the strength of Telstra’s network assets” and were also part of Telstra’s T25 InfraCo plans to deliver profitable growth and value by improving access, utilisation and scale of its infrastructure.

“Investing in these two truly significant nation-building projects will see us continue to have the largest intercity fibre network in the country, helping to future proof Australia’s digital economy and further improving connectivity in regional Australia,” Penn said.

Viasat’s global satellite system comprises three satellites designed to provide around 1Tbps of total network capacity and promises 150Mbps speeds for fixed, mobile and Government customers.

Viasat president of space and commercial networks Dave Ryan said, “Telstra is a trusted, well-respected organisation with impressive infrastructure assets in Asia and an extensive fibre network.”

“By leveraging their existing infrastructure for our ground network, we can cost-effectively optimise our satellite assets and significantly lower our risk of deployment and operations for the ViaSat-3 terabit-class satellite system. We remain focused on delivering advanced connectivity – from mobility and government services to connecting hard-to-reach communities – across the region.”

On the new inter-city dual fibre path network, Penn said the investment would help accelerate the growth of InfraCo while providing “ultrafast” connectivity between capital cities and improved regional connectivity.

The network is also a multi-year build set to commence at scale in late FY2022, with some trials and test deployments already underway. Telstra said it is also in discussions with potential anchor customers like global hyperscalers, local telcos and construction partners.

“This will support remote working and education needs, health services, high-definition entertainment consumption and online gaming, and IoT use cases such as mining and agriculture,” Penn said.

“We’re already seeing connection speeds on the current network surge from 100GB to 400GB and beyond through our investments to date. There is growing demand for greater fibre capacity, enabling massive bandwidth and ultrafast data rates with lower latency. The time for delivering the infrastructure to support this is now.”

That is why we have taken time to break down every concept for you to have a ground level on which to make a decision. We will also look at NBN and Telstra Fibre differences so that you have a better understanding of each.

Australia’s national broadband network is known as the NBN. To provide a more dependable, high-capacity internet to your house, optical fibre, and other technologies are replacing copper cables and cable broadband. 4. Who does the NBN installation in my home?

An NBN co technician may be required to come set up your property’s connection if it has never been connected to the NBN.

Your Telstra Smart Modem can be installed by you for nothing. Alternatively, you can pay a one-time price of $240 to have a Telstra technician connect your modem and devices.

5. What are the several methods of connecting to the NBN?

The terminology individuals use while discussing the NBN can be confusing.

What do FTTP, FTTC, FTTN, and HFC all mean? These abbreviations describe the various methods the NBN uses to enter your home.

Some connections use optical fibre exclusively to reach your home, while others combine copper wire and optical fibre, and yet others combine optical fibre and coaxial cable. You might have a fixed antenna on your roof that transmits and receives signals from a wireless tower if you reside outside of urban and suburban areas.

You don’t get to pick, and that is a crucial fact to keep in mind. NBN Co determines your connection type based on the technology available in your area:

  • Fibre to the Premises (FTTP)
  • Fibre to the Curb (FTTC)
  • Fibre to the Node (FTTN)

However, most homes cannot achieve these speeds; only FTTP and a small number of HFC homes will be able to do so.

While Basic and Standard speed plans are fine for using the internet for general purposes like social media and web browsing, you should consider Standard Plus or Premium speed plans if you do a lot of downloading, streaming, or playing online games.

Remember that the fastest NBN speeds are frequently restricted to particular regions and connection types. Some homes could not even have access to NBN 100 speeds. Fibre To The Building (FTTB)

FTTB technology runs an optic fibre line from the nearest available fibre node to your building’s communications room. From here, a copper line runs to your wall socket.

Fibre To The Node (FTTN)

FTTN technology runs an optic fibre line from the nearest available fibre node in your street, or a nearby street with a final stretch of copper to your wall socket inside your premises.

Fixed Wireless (FW)

FW technology starts at a Wireless tower. The tower sends the signal to a fixed antenna on your roof, which continues through internal wiring to your wall socket.

Hybrid Fibre Coaxial (HFC)

HFC technology runs an optical fibre line from the nearest available fibre node to your street. From here, a coaxial cable runs to your wall socket.

Fibre To The Curb (FTTC)

Optical Fibre leading to a small node in the telecommunications pit or mounted to the pole outside your premises. From the node, a copper telephone cable delivers the service to the wall socket inside your premises.

Frequently asked questions

How long does the upgrade take.

nbn ® will need up to 6 weeks to prepare your fibre (FTTP) upgrade for installation. 

During this time, we will set you up on a plan that's compatible with your existing nbn tech when we take your order. 

Once the fibre upgrade process is complete, we'll move you over to your selected high-speed plan. We won't disconnect your existing FTTN or FTTC connection until your new FTTP is connected. And you won’t pay for the high speed-plan until we move you over.

Note: Once you’ve chosen to upgrade to FTTP, you can’t go back to your old connection. 

What’s involved in the upgrade process?

An nbn ® approved installer may need to visit to assess the outside of your premises and identify any obstacles for your upcoming installation appointment. You do not need to be home at this time. 

Once external checks are complete, Telstra will call you to book an installation date. 

On the day of the installation, the process will take 3-4 hours. You or someone over 18 needs to be home.

Once installation is done, you simply unplug your modem from the old connection and plug it into the new FTTP connection. It will take a few moments to sync up. And you’re done.

Can I upgrade if I’m renting?

If you're renting, make sure that you have the landlord or property manager's permission before the visit. The technician may need to do work that will need approval - such as drilling into the property walls.

The works include:

  • Installation of the nbn fibre lead-in with nbn utility box and drop cable
  • Installation of nbn utility box to the property’s external wall and internal nbn connection box and power supply. 

Do I need to I connect my modem to the new FTTP box?

Yes, once your new fibre service is up and running, you'll need to unplug your modem from its existing connection and connect it to your new fibre connection box. You can follow the FTTP instructions (PDF, 535KB) .

Is there any downtime with the upgrade?

To avoid downtime,  nbn ® will leave your existing connection active while will they install your new (FTTP) connection, and ensure it’s up and running before they switch you over.  

When you unplug your modem from the old connection and plug it into the new FTTP connection, it may take a few minutes to sync up. (You may need to move your modem)

During the upgrade, there may be a temporary interruption to your service. This could be anywhere from 15-30 minutes depending on the required activities and the current nbn technology at your premises. 

Our smart modems have a built-in 4G SIM, so if there is an outage, it can switch to our 4G mobile network in minutes.

Why is the upgrade only available on certain plans?

nbn ® has set eligibility criteria for the upgrade program, including which plan you need to be on to receive the free FTTP tech upgrade based on your current tech type.

Given this, if your current tech type is FTTN you will need to choose the Premium plan or above to be eligible for a free tech upgrade. If your current tech type is FTTC, you will need to choose the Ultimate/Superfast plan or above to be eligible.

Things you need to know

The nbn™ tier figures represent wholesale maximum network speeds during off-peak periods. The nbn tier figures and 'typical busy period speeds' are not measures of customers' actual in-premises speeds, which may be slower. Not all customers receive these speeds. Your plan and add-ons may change (including price and inclusions). If you don't like a change, you can change your plan or cancel your plan add-ons. If you cancel, just pay out your accessories and services in full.

Standard installation includes self-installation of your modem, eligibility criteria apply. Extra charges apply for professional or non-standard installation of equipment and for premises in new developments.

What is Mbps? 

Mbps, or megabits per second is how fast data travels along a network.

The typical evening speed on any plan is measured in Mbps; eg "50Mbps typical evening speed". A higher Mbps means a faster connection; lower Mbps means a slower one.

Mbps is also a measure of the capacity of your internet. Each thing you do online - watching a video, playing a game, posting updates - reduces your capacity.

Faster Mbps speed means more capacity, which allows more people and devices to use your connection at once.

All our plans include unlimited data, so you don’t have to worry about how much data you use.

The maximum speeds available at an address are dependant on the technology used to connect the premises to the nbn network. They will be the same no matter who you buy an internet plan from.

This may be due to one of 2 reasons:

Additional nbn services

The maximum available speeds at your address shown are for your existing line only. If you need an additional line/service, we’ll let you know the maximum speeds of the additional line once it’s connected.

Do I need an additional service?

Most customers only need one service at their address. Having an additional nbn service at your address means you’ll have to pay for an additional nbn plan and install a new modem.

If there are no additional available nbn lines at your address, we may need to install a new one, which may increase the time to complete your order, and there may be set-up costs.

Each nbn line at your address could have different maximum speeds. We’ll ask at checkout about additional nbn services.

Speeds at your address

Telstra smart modem, with 4g network backup..

Get advanced speed, range and reliability plus 4G mobile network backup if your nbn connection goes down. 4G coverage required. 4G speeds capped at 25Mbps downloads and 5Mbps uploads. Actual speeds may be lower.

Temporary pause on new nbn HFC connections

Due to an industry-wide hardware shortage, nbn co can't currently process nbn Hybrid Fibre Co-axial (HFC) orders for addresses that haven't had nbn HFC before. We'll let you know as soon as nbn co starts accepting these orders again.

Meanwhile you can still connect with Telstra on Cable, ADSL or Mobile Broadband, then switch to nbn HFC when it's available.

If the ADSL or Cable connection at your address has already been disconnected, you’ll still be able to connect to nbn HFC. To do this, call 1300 112 376 between 9am and 5pm Monday to Friday.

What are high speeds for?

They’re designed for busy homes that demand more from their internet connection. You can take up a speed add on when you're on our Premium plan, via the Upfront Internet Plan Ultimate on FTTP and selected HFC connections. To confirm if you can get Superfast or Ultrafast speeds, check your address.

ADSL uses your copper phone line to deliver internet alongside your phone service. ADSL speeds vary depending on your distance from the exchange.

Mobile broadband

A mobile broadband device is a great option for homes where other connections arent available. Because they're portable they offer internet at home and on the go, with 4G and 5G speeds comparable to cable broadband.

Your address is eligible for our speed add-ons, which can only be added on to the premium speed plan. .

Eligible connection types

We estimate you could do all of these and still use less than 1000GB a month:

If you go over 1000 GB you still get data access, but your download speed will be slowed to 25 Mbps.

Speeds experienced may be slower over Wi-Fi and can also be impacted by other factors such as the distance and line of sight between the serving 5G mobile tower and the modem, the number of users online, where your modem is located and how far you are from it, weather, congestions and your in-home set up.

Telstra 5G Home Modem is all the equipment you need to connect your home to 5G-fast internet.  

Just plug your 5G Home Modem in where you find the strongest 5G signal at home and it connects wirelessly to the Telstra 5G network without any extra cabling. The modem light shows you how strong your 5G signal is, so it's easy to find the best location.

We're offering 1TB of data per month on our 5G Home Internet plan. You won't be charged if you go over your data allowance, but you will be slowed to 25Mbps. You can check your usage anytime on the My Telstra app. We'll let you know when you've hit 50, 85 and 100% of your data.
