In my opinion, they can make or break an outfit: They define a silhouette, balance proportion, and, at the end of the day, are there for you no matter what the rest of your fit looks like. So, I love pants. And my standards for them are pretty damn high.

I’ve been through many, many pairs and the selection I’ve curated is the best of the best. They need to have the right silhouette (I don’t want to be wearing skinny jeans, nor do I want to be wearing balloon-legged trousers), the right fabric (what’s worse than stiff, scratchy pants?), and the right details (sorry, but the color metal on the button and zip does matter). I’m talking about pocket size, belt loops, waistband, and everything else—right down to the stitching. If a pair of pants can pass these checkpoints, it’s good. Norse Projects’ Aaren Travel Light Pants are simply great.

For a single pair to stand out in my closet is an achievement in and of itself. The Aaren Travel Light Pants, however, have become an immediate staple even when I’m not traveling; when I’m at the bar or the office or on the subway, I’m wearing these pants. In fact, I’m wearing them right now.

Norse Projects is a Danish clothing brand that combines the effortless minimalism of Scandinavian style with the coolness of cosmopolitan streetwear. The garments are simple yet stunning, and of everything I’ve tried from the brand (including outerwear and shirts), the Aaren Travel Light Pants are definitely my favorite.

They carry with them the timeless, understated elegance (any “quiet luxury” fans here?) consistent with Norse Projects’ vocabulary, but they also have a versatility that lends them to any wardrobe. For example, while these are men’s pants, I found that these were up to any fit I wanted to concoct. With a white tank top and sneakers on a hot summer afternoon, they give me a cool, model-off-duty street style look. Casual, nonchalant. At the office, with a blazer and loafers, they're easy yet elevated, with their light pleating and straight-leg silhouette.

It’s rare to find a pair of pants that become your go-to for any and all occasions, but within the first month of having these, I reached for other pairs of pants maybe…once? Twice? I found myself wanting to wear these all the time, because, really, they’re just the perfect pair of everyday pants. The legs aren’t too wide nor too slim, and, although the waistband has an elastic backing (thank goodness for that extra bit of comfort!), the front and sides of these pants look like they were tailored specifically for you.

They don't skimp on performance.

These are “travel pants” for a reason. They get you where you need to be.

See, one thing about me is that I hate airport style. I hate having to wear clothes that are kind of ugly and frumpy just to be comfortable on a long flight (you will not catch me falling asleep in jeans). Norse Projects eradicates that dreaded feeling; although I wear the Aarens everywhere, they are made for traveling.

In fact, they're so damn comfortable, it seems unfair that they should be stylish, too. Like, if brands were capable of combining this level of chicness with this level of comfort all along, why haven’t they been? Why have we been sacrificing one for the other? It seems that not everyone has Norse Project’s tech down, but they make it look oh so easy. See, the first thing I noticed about these pants—even before I unfolded them from the package they came in—was the fabric. It’s soft. Not fleece-y, sweatpants soft, but lightweight, airy, and perfect for almost every endeavor.

They’re thin, too—perfect for running through the airport or commuting on a train with no AC. I was worried they might be too thin for cold environments, but then I wore them on a three and a half hour Amtrak ride from New York to Washington DC—one of the coldest environments on planet earth, mind you—and they struck the right balance. They’re breezy enough to let some air in, but not too much. Norse Projects also advertises these pants as being “fast-drying,” and they aren’t lying; just ask the other pairs of pants that didn’t pass the test of delivering moisture-wicking tech on a 40-minute, underground commute on the F train on an 89 degree afternoon in New York City. Yeesh.

The details go above and beyond.

You know when you get a pair of pants and you’re like, “Damn, these would be so perfect, if only they were a little more [insert your complaint here]?” Yeah, you won’t have that issue with these.

Norse Projects thought out every detail of these pants, from waistband to hemlines. That elasticated waistband I mentioned earlier is a fuckin’ treat, but what takes it to the next level is the smooth, invisible zip (I hate when zippers show on pants), thin belt loops, and lie-flat drawcord closure.

There’s some short and sweet darting at the hips to elevate the pants a little bit more, and the fabric is especially stretchy both horizontally and vertically, so don’t think twice about doing a little sprint to catch your train or bus or plane. The sweat will dry anyway, and you’ll look composed and cool. As always.

The modern, purpose-built waterfront building features large rear doors and a ramp down to the fjord to facilitate launching of the vessel, something that happens on special occasions.

The remainder of the museum is dedicated to the discovery of the remains of the Myklebust ship burial, the story of the chieftain buried with the boat, the story behind its reconstruction, and Nordfjordeid’s role in the Viking Age.

The Story Of Myklebust

In 1874, a young archaeologist traveled to Nordfjordeid to examine a significant burial mound. Although overshadowed by later discoveries of intact ships like Gokstad and Oseberg at the Oslofjord, the Nordfjord site played a pivotal role in our understanding of the Viking Age.

This striking mound contained the remnants of a Viking ship and numerous high-status objects from the late 9th century, hinting at the rich Norse culture and rituals of that era.

The remains of the ship, named the ‘Myklebust ship’, believed to have been burned during the burial rites, also contained traces of bones and an arrowhead, suggesting the chieftain or other prominent figure buried here died in battle.

Visitors to Sagastad can board and explore the Myklebust replica viking ship.

An exhibition at the museum speculates he may have been King Audbjørn, who according to the Icelandic sagas fought Harald Fairhair at the Second Battle of Solskjel .

The Myklebust ship has recently been brought to life once again by skilled boat builders from Bjørkedalen, a town with deep roots in traditional shipbuilding. The result has become a wonderful attraction for both locals and tourists.

Once a year, the Myklebust ship is taken out into the fjord, an event that attracts great interest locally and from across Norway. In future years, it’s hoped to sail the vessel more often, although its primary home will always be the museum.

How To Visit Sagastad

Sagastad is located on the waterfront in the heart of Nordfjordeid (also just called ‘Eid’), a small town at the end of the Eidsfjord, a branch of the much larger Nordfjord .

There’s plenty of other things to do in Nordfjordeid, including meeting Norwegian Fjord Horses and strolling past the wooden buildings of the historic town center. Positioned on the E39 highway, it’s a good choice to include in a road trip itinerary between Bergen/Stavanger and Ålesund/Trondheim.

Sagastad is open daily throughout June, July, and August, with restricted opening hours in May, September, and October. The museum is usually open in connection with cruise ship calls. Check the Sagastad website to confirm.

At the time of writing, entry is 230 Norwegian kroner, which is approximately $22.

Northern projects net $3.2 million funding boost from Arctic Inspiration Prize

A project to revitalise Inuttitut and promote pride in Inuit identity in northern Labrador has collected the top award from the 12th annual Arctic Inspiration Prize. At the ceremony in Whitehorse on Tuesday night, judges also endorsed a two-eyed recovery and wellbeing centre, a therapeutic farm school for neurodiverse learners in the Yukon, and an initiative to teach boys and young men traditional fishing skills for Arctic Char in Nunavut, among others. The Arctic Inspiration Prize website says the awards are Canada's largest annual prize. Each year seed funding is offered to new and innovative projects to improve northerners' lives.

'For all Nunatsiavummiutut'

This year there were 10 winning teams and a total prize pool of $3.2 million. The top prize of $1 million went to a project in northern Labrador called the Inotsiavik Centre. The funding will help Nicholas Flowers and his team to hold cultural workshops and language programming in the Nunatsiavut community of Hopedale.

He said the win had left his team "all absolutely speechless." "It's amazing ... it's incredible on so many different levels," he said. "The most important thing we keep in mind is that the $1 million isn't for us ... it's for all Nunatsiavummiutut as a whole." Five other projects walked away from the Kwanlin Dün Cultural Centre with cheques of up to $500,000. Thay K'i Anint'i was awarded $499,000 to offer recovery and wellness programmes in the Yukon built around Indigenous culture and western practices. Learning, Harvesting, Earning was awarded $425,000 to help teach boys and young men in Nunavut the traditional skills of fishing for Arctic Char. Indigenizing Work with Traditional Knowledge and Support Project was awarded $112,000 to support Indigenous employees at Aurora Heat, a sustainable fur business in Fort Smith, N.W.T. Therapeutic Farm School was awarded $500,000 to help neurodiverse K-12 students learn through experimental means in the Yukon.

Hebron and Nutak Reunions was awarded $298,000 to help able-bodied Inuit return to the communities in Labrador that they were evicted from in the 1950s.

Team member Lena Onalik said she was full of joy and excitement, knowing that the planned trips can now happen in July.

"This has been a long journey. A long road to get to where we are. A lot of blood, sweat, tears, and happiness and disappointment along the way. To actually have succeeded in getting the funding, it's a huge win for us," she said.

Youth projects

Four youth projects took home close to $100,000 each. Investing in the Futures of Inuit Women was awarded $98,000 to provide young Inuit mothers and women with employment and skill-building opportunities. L.O.V.E. Inuktut was awarded $100,000 to make beginner-level video to revitalize and safeguard 11 dialects of Inuktut. Youth Coalition 4 Food Security North was awarded $100,000 to support, engage and connect youth in food initiatives across northern Canada. And the Yukon Young People's Theatre Festival was awarded $99,000 to hold a three-day event at the Yukon Arts Centre in early 2025. "It's an amazing feeling to know at this point there's nothing stopping this project, than to just do it. So we've finally jumped the last real hurdle — besides, you know, work — to making this festival a reality," said Gabriel Hopkins, a member of Yukon Young People's Theatre Festival. "It's going to be amazing. We're going to get to extend the loving hand of theatre to all the communities in the Yukon, as well as Atlin and Inuvik."

Founder announces retirement

The Arctic Inspiration Prize was founded by Arnold Witzig, together with his partner Sima Sharifi. At this year's ceremony, Witzig announced his retirement.

He would be handing the Arctic Inspiration Prize flag over, to be carried by a new team "all across the North," he said. "Over the last 12 years I've had the opportunity to meet and come close to many incredible people across the North ... and some even become dear friends," he said.
