If you see “Unable to Upload” in the Photos app on Mac

When you check the status of your library at the bottom of the Photos app on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac, you might see that some photos or videos are unable to sync to iCloud Photos. You might also see a status message that says “Couldn’t Sync [number of items] to iCloud” and a new Unable to Upload album in the Photos app.

To add these photos or videos to iCloud Photos, you can try exporting them from the Photos app and importing them again. Any edits or keywords that you previously applied to these photos or videos will be lost. See the AppleCare Support Article: If you see “Unable to Upload” in the Photos app .

Photos App Not Working in Windows? Here Are the Fixes

Farhad Pashaei

The new Windows Photos app isn’t bad. It’s actually been around since Windows 8 but is still the most recent built-in option for viewing photos. It has a nice interface and decent image-filtering options off the bat. However, it’s also prone to not working as it should.

If you have an issue with the Photos app not working, these fixes can be implemented, as can this alternative that’s built right in to Windows.

Note : before going through the below tips, the first thing you should try, as with many Windows issues, is to run a basic check for corrupt system files on Windows. To do this, just open the command prompt, enter the command sfc /scannow and restart Windows.

1. Use Windows Store Apps Troubleshooter

  • 2. Optimize Photos App's Internal Settings

3. Install Windows Media Pack (Windows N and KN)

4. update the photos app, 5. reset the app, 6. terminate the app, 7. repair the photos app, 8. remove and reinstall the app, 9. perform a system restore, 10. install new windows updates.

Photos is a Windows Store app using Microsoft’s proprietary UWP format that causes all kinds of problems. (Check out the litany of problems with Xbox Game Pass for PC , as an example.) The first port of call to fix this is the built-in Windows troubleshooter for Photos and other Windows apps.

  • Right-click on the Start menu and select “Settings.”

Keyboard Language Open Settings

  • Go to the “System” tab and select the “Troubleshoot” option.

System Troubleshoot

  • Look for the “Other Troubleshooters” option and click on it.

Other Troubleshooters

  • Find the “Windows Store Apps” troubleshooter and click the “Run” button next to it.

Windows Store Apps

  • Follow the instructions provided by the troubleshooter on your screen. These steps may help fix any issues you’re experiencing with Windows Store apps.

Troubleshooting

2. Optimize Photos App’s Internal Settings

If your Photos app is running slowly, one solution could be to tweak its internal settings to make it work more smoothly.

  • Open the Photos app from the Start menu.

Photos App

  • Go to the three-dot icon at the top right and select “Settings.”

Settings Of The Photos App

Many configuration settings with the Photos app may have been enabled by default. To ensure a fast response time, you need to optimize these settings.

  • The most important one is the Photos app’s sync with OneDrive, which is something you may not need frequently. Every time you’re online, it can affect the speed of the Photos app. Thus, you need to turn off the option “Show my cloud-only content from OneDrive.”
  • You can also turn off “Display delete confirmation dialog,” which consumes extra memory. Hardware-accelerated video encoding is also something you don’t need unless you are planning to use the Photos app as a video editor .

Changing The Settings Of The Photos App

  • The Photos app can be truly busy using up lots of memory to load a pictures folder. Therefore, you should also “Disable indexing parts of your photo library stored on Network locations.”

Changing The Settings Of The Photos App (2)

As with every Windows release, there are several different versions of Windows available for purchase. We’re not just talking about the usual Home and Professional versions either. For example, the “N” and “KN” versions of Windows 10, which are special versions of Windows made for Europe and Korea.

The N editions of Windows have the same features and capabilities as other editions, except for media-related technologies and certain preinstalled media applications, such as Groove, Movies & TV, Voice Recorder, and Skype. Unlike other versions of Windows, the N editions lack Windows Media Player, other multimedia apps, and the necessary libraries for multimedia playback. As a result, this can surprisingly affect the functionality of the Photos app, as it also relies on multimedia libraries.

If you want to check your Windows version:

  • Right-click on the Start menu and choose “Settings.”
  • In the “System” menu, scroll down and select “About.”

System About

  • Scroll down in the new window and see what’s next to “OS build.”

Os Build

If you see an “N” or “KN” next to your OS build, you need to download the Windows Media Feature Pack.

For Windows 10 N, follow the steps below:

  • Click on the Start button in Windows, then open “Settings.”
  • Select the “Apps” option.
  • Click on the “Apps and Features” option.
  • Select “Optional features.”
  • Look for “Add a feature” and click on it.
  • Find and install the “Media Feature Pack” in the list of available optional features.
  • You can also download it from the Microsoft website .

If you’re running Windows 11 N, follow these steps:

  • Right-click on the Start menu, then go to “Settings.”
  • Select “Apps” from the left menu, then on the right side, click on “Optional features.”

Pic 10 Optional Features

  • Select “View features” next to “Add an optional feature.”

View Features

  • Look for the “Media Feature Pack” in the list of optional features and install it.

Select Optional Feature

If an app hasn’t been updated in a while, it may encounter issues and stop functioning correctly, possibly due to a bug. To resolve this, it’s recommended to check the Microsoft Store for available updates for the Photos app. Updating the app can fix bugs and improve its performance.

  • Click on the Start menu, type “Microsoft Store” and click on it.

Open Microsoft Store

  • Click on the “Library” button located on the left side of the screen.

Go To Library

  • Find the “Update” button next to “Microsoft Photos” and click on it.

Update Photos

Open the Photos app and check to see whether it is fixed. If not, proceed to the next method.

Resetting the Photos app will wipe the app’s cache and reset all its data to default settings. Do so by following the steps below:

  • Right-click on the Start menu and go to “Apps and Features.”

Apps And Features

  • Scroll down to “Photos” in the list and tap “Advanced options.”

Advanced Options

  • Click “Reset.” This will wipe all data from the Photos app, including any saved image presets or settings you may have had, and get it back to its original state.

Reset The Photos App

If resetting the app doesn’t solve the problem, try manually closing it and reopening it. These steps should help fix the issue in most cases:

  • Right-click on the Start menu, then select the “Apps and Features” option.

Apps And Features 2

  • Search for the “Photos” app by scrolling through the list of apps. Once you find the app, click on the three-dot menu located on the right side of the app listing and choose “Advanced options.”

Advanced Options 2

  • On the Advanced options page, click the “Terminate” button.

Terminate The App

If terminating the Photos app does not resolve the issue, it is possible that the app is corrupt or damaged. Fortunately, Windows provides a solution for this. You can easily repair the Photos app by following the instructions below:

  • Right-click on the Start menu and select “Apps and Features.”

Apps And Features 3

  • Scroll through the list of apps to find the “Photos” app. Click on the three-dot menu located on the right side of the app listing, then choose “Advanced options” from the menu.

Advanced Options 3

  • On the “Advanced options” page, click on the “Repair” button under “Reset.”

Repair The App

The more drastic option is to remove the Photos app manually, then reinstall it. Unfortunately, you can’t do this through the “Apps and Features” list as you could a normal app. Instead, you need to use an elevated PowerShell command.

  • Right-click on the Start menu and select “Windows Terminal (Admin).”

Local Group Policy Opening Windows Terminal

  • In the Windows Terminal window, type the following and press Enter to uninstall it:

Powershell Window

  • To reinstall the Photos app, go to the “Microsoft Store” app and search for “Microsoft Photos” and select it.

Search For Microsoft Store

  • Click on “Get” to install the app.

photos-app-not-working-fix-reinstall

If you more or less know when the problems started with your Photos app, you can perform a System Restore to an earlier time before the issues began.

  • Open the Start menu, type “restore,” then tap “Create a restore point.”

Open Create A Restore Point

  • In the new window, click on “System Restore” and follow the prompts until you can select a restore point. Select the one you want (ideally before your Photos app problems started) and go ahead with the process.

Choose A Restore Point

Updates always bring performance and security features and sometimes contain bug fixes. Installing new Windows updates can also fix the Photos App not working on Windows.

  • In the left pane, click on the “Windows Update” menu. Select “Check for updates” or “Download now,” and let Windows scan for and install all the new updates.

Download Windows Updates

For many people, the old Windows Photo Viewer worked just fine. While it wasn’t as flashy as “Photos,” it did the job and was a functional and convenient way of browsing your photos in a given folder.

Microsoft has steadily phased Photo Viewer out, however, and if you have a PC with Windows 10 or 11 preinstalled, you’ll need to get a bit technical to set Photo Viewer as the default .

Picture Project not responding

By susan_croft April 22, 2008 in Nikon

Recommended Posts

Susan_croft.

I apologize if this question is redundant but I am new to the forum and just

learning the ropes. Not sure if I hit "post" to send this question before .

I have transferred photos onto Picture Project for several months now from my

Nikon D200. Never a problem until yesterday.

As I was editing the program stopped responding. Message box said it was

unable to continue, etc.

I shut down. Rebooted...nothing. Same message box.

My question is this:

If I uninstall this PP software will I lose ALL my photo files previously

transferred into the files of this program?

Will they be saved and show up when I re-install the PP ? Or will they ALL be

deleted when I uninstall PP?

Last night I ran a search on my hard drive looking for a particular file of

photos. Nothing came up from PP.

I cannot afford to lose my photos...my bride will not be a happy camper.

Any help would be MUCH appreciated.

By the way...I have just gotten Capture NX. Yet to have time to learn it.

Will definitely NOT use PP again once I get this problem resolved.

Thanks for the info. I also did not know PP was discontinued. I now know why!

I will do what you suggest right now.

Again..Richard.

Where do I click to find preferences or options?

Hi William,

Thanks for responses. I am going to take a chance and uninstall the PP. Yes, I am a windows user...I already checked My Pictures. Nothing.

Lucky I have two computers to finish my other work without disturbing my crashed files.

joe_sixpack

Pamela_follett.

I installed this program once, and then didn't use it again, but I hope this helps:

It installed a separate folder in "My Pictures" called "Picture Project", and then put photos in different folders in there. I un-installed the program a while back, and the folder is still there, as are the photos.

eric_arnold

Everyone ...Thanks for helping!

Pamela, you are right. I found the PP folder in My Pictures! I had actually looked there yesterday but being in a frazzle just overlooked that folder.

Now, I am going to uninstall PP .

Great forum!

deni_giordano

I exported my Picture Project pics to My Pictures, also burned them onto a CD. I am trying to uninstall Picture Project but keep getting the message "install shield setup launcher has encountered a problem and needs to close...". Were you able to uninstall? I also put the CD in and couldn't find an uninstall option!

Government releases documents behind decision to cancel Cook Strait mega ferries

The Government has released long-awaited documents behind the decision to cancel KiwiRail’s Interislander mega ferries . The Herald’s deputy political editor Thomas Coughlan and Wellington issues reporter Georgina Campbell dive in to bring you the highlights.

Ministry of Transport officials have raised the question of KiwiRail’s suitability to run the Interislander business in the long term and have suggested it could be separated into another State-Owned Enterprise (SOE) or sold.

The Government refused to give KiwiRail more money for the mega ferries soon after it came to power - leaving the plan to replace the ageing Interislander fleet dead in the water.

Overall costs, including new terminals and wharf upgrades, had ballooned to almost $3 billion.

The decision, announced by Finance Minister Nicola Willis, sent a sharp warning to the public sector that the Government is not afraid to shake up projects that may have previously been presented as a fait accompli.

KiwiRail is still negotiating the exit from a fixed-price $551 million contract signed with Hyundai Mipo Dockyard in 2021.

Requests made by the Herald under the Official Information Act for documents relating to the decision have previously been declined because they would soon be proactively released. These documents have been released today by the Treasury.

Documents include the letter Willis sent to KiwiRail relaying the Government’s decision.

They also reveal some of the alternative options floated and more about the question of KiwiRail’s suitability to run the Interislander business.

Questions over whether KiwiRail should run Interislander

Officials said the difficulties KiwiRail has had with the mega ferry project, along with core rail issues it faces, raised the question of KiwiRail’s suitability to run the Interislander business in the medium to long term, officials said.

“The Interislander business could be separated into another State-Owned Enterprise or sold via a trade sale, they said.

“KiwiRail would be expected to contract with this business to provide freight services across the Cook Strait, but how this is achieved would be left as a commercial decision between parties.”

Finance Minister Nicola Willis said the Government was concerned about continued significant cost blow-outs. Photo / Mark Mitchell.

Officials said KiwiRail was incentivised to make cancelling the contract for the mega ferries as unattractive as possible and had suggested the break fee to do so could be high.

“But KiwiRail have also acknowledged that ferry prices have increased significantly since they signed their fixed price contract, so it is conceivable the ferries could be sold on for a price that does not result in such high losses.”

Officials said it was plausible that if a new approach was adopted, especially by someone other than KiwiRail, then a more commercially viable option should be possible.

“Even if significant government support is required resetting, now could provide a more open and transparent process.

“This would allow all parties to access any required subsidy and for the Government to be very clear about what it is purchasing.”

In a statement this afternoon, KiwiRail chief executive Peter Reidy said the SOE remained committed to operating the Interislander service.

“We have run the service for over 60 years, and we want to continue to run it for another 60 as part of an integrated rail network supporting New Zealand businesses, passengers and our visiting tourists.

“We are working with the Government’s Ministerial Advisory Group, Ministry of Transport, Treasury and all stakeholders to continue providing a connected, safe and reliable ferry and terminal system for the benefit of New Zealand.”

Reidy said he was confident they would find a solution and that he looked forward to getting on with it.

Grant Robertson asks for options

In July 2023, after the Government was asked for a further top-up, the then-Finance Minister Grant Robertson asked the organisation to consider other options.

KiwiRail costed doing the full project, as it preferred, as well as a “big ships” option with “limited” landside infrastructure. This was costed at $2.377b compared with $2.675b for the full project.

Purchasing three second hand ships to replace the three current Interisland ferries was costed at $2.02b.

Dispute over whether rail-enabled ships are necessary

Ministry of Transport officials provided the Government with alternative options to the mega ferries.

In the short to medium term, KiwiRail would need to decide if it could or should extend the life of its two existing non-rail-enabled ferries or buy or lease second-hand ferries.

“This could buy KiwiRail time while it decides whether to purchase new ferries with reduced landside requirements. (It would likely take at least 5 years to plan, design, procure and bring into service new ferries).”

KiwiRail could consider further extending the life of its only rail-enabled ferry, Aratere, by making it a freight-only service.

In KiwiRail’s view, proceeding without rail-enabled ships was not an option it was willing to consider, officials said, while also noting KiwiRail was not prepared to pay for this.

Officials did not consider this would make a material difference to the amount of freight that would move from road to rail.

A relatively small proportion of total rail freight was carried across Cook Strait and almost all of it could be done by road bridging. This is where containers are moved from trains by a vehicle that loads them onto the ferry.

This is standard practice around the world, officials said.

“Which is invisible to KiwiRail customers, and who are likely to be indifferent about how their goods are moved onto the ferry.”

KiwiRail argued this would have a major effect on ship turnaround times and reduce the number of daily sailings.

Officials lose confidence in project, advise Willis to ‘stop and reset’

The project appears to have lost the confidence of Treasury officials who briefed Willis on 29 November last year, saying it was doubtful whether the project continued to represent value for money. They said KiwiRail needed to be incentivised to explore lower cost options.

The project was at a “critical juncture”, they said. “[T]he key lever for Ministers to exercise is the amount of Crown funding deemed necessary to provide”.

“Officials are of the view Project iReX no longer represents good value for money, and that lower cost alternatives more closely aligned to KiwiRail’s current business model have yet to be fully explored.

“KiwiRail needs to be incentivised to consider such options more seriously,” they said.

Cabinet had agreed in-principle to increase the tagged contingency associated with the project by $750m. Officials recommended reversing that decision.

Because that decision was only in-principle, it meant the $750m was not included in the Government’s forecast and effectively lurked as a hidden cost.

Because of this, reversing the decision did not allow Willis to bank the $750m.

The $750m given to KiwiRail was actually $450m less than the $1.197b requested by KiwiRail.

Treasury’s paper recommended reversing the $750m tagged contingency decision and keeping funding for the project where it had been set prior to that decision.

They said a “fundamental reset on how to address aging ferry and landside assets is required to provide a more affordable and commercially sustainable solution”.

Officials said the Government needed to send KiwiRail “back to the drawing board and focus on delivering a more cost-effective level of resilience”.

The paper warned the decision would mean the winding down of large parts of the project and that KiwiRail may threaten to stop providing an ferry service. They reckoned this was a bluff.

“We believe this risk is overstated as we have not seen any substantive evidence that not progressing KiwiRail’s preferred big ship approach to Project iReX would materially impact KiwiRail’s ability to continue with its current Interislander operating model,” officials said.

The paper ultimately recommended the Government “stop and reset” the project.

KiwiRail told Ministers they would run out of cash in a month

KiwiRail briefed new Government ministers about its “very difficult position” on November 30 and said it would run out of cash for the mega ferry project in less than a month

Chairman David McLean said it was not possible to pause the project and stopping it would have serious financial and reputational implications.

KiwiRail insisted the mega ferries were the only option and studies dating back to 1993, and extensive questioning by Treasury over the project life, had confirmed this.

“No matter how many times we have revisited the questions posed by officials, the scenario of two large rail-enabled ships still produces much greater benefits than any other combination of more, smaller, or older vessels”, McLean said.

KiwiRail wanted to submit a request to draw down enough money for the project to continue until the end of February, allowing the new Government time to get up to speed.

KiwiRail information accused of ‘lacking veracity’

The situation became tense as ministers learned more about the problems.

On December 6, KiwiRail chairman David McLean wrote to ministers about claims that information the SOE had provided “lacked veracity”.

“We were not aware before our meeting last week of any concerns by Treasury about the veracity of any of the information we have provided, and we take very seriously the suggestion that it lacked veracity.

“I will be meeting with the Secretary of the Treasury next week and intend to raise our concerns about this advice directly with her.”

Willis has previously defended wanting independent advice on the future of Cook Strait ferries from experts charging $2000 a day, “given KiwiRail got us into this mess”.

What Finance Minister Nicola Willis told KiwiRail

On December 12, Willis wrote to McLean saying she would not be providing additional cash and was rescinding an “in-principle decision” made by Labour to increase tagged contingency funding by $750 million.

This meant Cabinet had confirmed that Crown funding was “limited to $435.1m in appropriated funding (of which approximately $63 million remains), she said.

Willis said she understood this decision meant the “KiwiRail Board may likely decide that the only viable way to proceed is to exit Project iRex” [the technical name given for the ferry replacement project]”.

She said KiwiRail would need to engage with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade and Treasury on negotiating any potential exit from ferry contracts.

Willis said the Government was concerned about the “continued significant cost blow-outs” and the “changing nature of the investment” the Crown was being asked to make.

“The cost has since escalated to be projected at approximately $3 billion - around four times its original cost,” Willis wrote.

She added her concern that “only 21 per cent of these costs related to the core project of replacing ageing ferries. The project has become more of a landslide infrastructure project than a new ferries project”.

She said the risk of cost escalations had “reduced our confidence” in the project.

KiwiRail warns existing ferries may not be able to serve for much longer

McLean wrote back on December 15, saying the Government would “wind down” the iRex project “as we cannot proceed without further Government funding”.

McLean said KiwiRail was making arrangements to exit iRex although he did not detail what this may entail. He appeared to ask for some distance between KiwiRail and the Minister.

“These are commercial contractual matters between KiwiRail and other parties.

“We do not wish to implicate the ministries in a contractual relationship, and it is important that we maintain good faith relationships between contractual partners by allowing these parties to negotiate directly,” he said.

“We will be guided by our primary legal duty as directors to act in the best interests of the company, which should be congruent with the interests of you as shareholder and New Zealand taxpayers,” he said.

The board would meet in future to discuss future options, McLean said.

KiwiRail chief executive Peter Reidy, left, and chairman David McLean. Photo / Mark Mitchell

These options would need to “incorporate investment in both replacement ferries and necessary landside infrastructure” to “accommodate projected future growth in freight and passenger demand over the life cycle of the assets” and to “recognise that the existing ferries, and existing wharf infrastructure, must be replaced in the near term”.

The letter warned the existing ferries may not be able to serve for much longer.

“We will be assessing the potential length of service for the existing ships as part of the forward options assessment,” Mclean said.

“We had planned to continue using the existing fleet for another 2-3 years, until new ferries arrive. While we plan to do what we can to enable these aged vessels to continue to operate safely and reliably, it is important that this 2-3 year period is used to plan for a long-term replacement fleet.”

CLAIM: Images show the Soviet Victory banner projected by hackers onto the east side of Brandenburg Gate in Berlin on Tuesday night, prior to annual festivities celebrating the defeat of Nazi Germany in 1945.

AP’S ASSESSMENT: False. The images were fabricated. Berlin police and the company that manages the Brandenburg Gate confirmed to The Associated Press that the Soviet Victory banner did not appear this week on the monument, one of Germany’s most significant landmarks.

THE FACTS: Social media users shared photos and videos that made it appear the banner was being projected onto the Brandenburg Gate ahead of this week’s commemorative celebrations.

“Last night, hackers breached the projection on the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin and put the Soviet Victory Banner,” reads one X post that had received approximately 21,000 likes and more than 5,300 shares as of Friday.

A TikTok video viewed more than 198,000 times was similarly captioned: “Last night, hackers hacked the projection on the Brandenburg Gate and reminded authorities of who once defeated them, German police have launched an investigation.”

On Friday, May 10, 2024, The Associated Press reported on stories circulating online incorrectly claiming that France sent troops to fight in the Russia-Ukraine war. (AP Photo/Michel Euler, File)

Other posts claimed that the alleged hack was a response to Berlin banning Russian symbols during the celebrations.

But an investigation into the reports found no evidence of such activity involving the popular landmark, an 18th century city gate that symbolized Berlin’s division during the Cold War and became representative of a reunified Germany after the fall of the Berlin Wall.

“After evaluating all the findings available to the Berlin police, the videos and photos circulating on social media of the alleged projection at the Brandenburg Gate are an optical/graphical fake,” Susann Barahona, a spokesperson for Polizei Berlin, the city’s police force, told the AP in an email written in German.

Johanna Steinke, a spokesperson for BIM Berliner Immobilienmanagement, a real estate company that manages the Brandenburg Gate, wrote in an email, also in German, that the claim spreading online is a “false report.”

It is unclear how the fabricated images were created.

The Soviet Victory banner was raised by the Red Army atop the destroyed German Reichstag on April 30,1945, during the Battle of Berlin , in which the city fell to the Soviets. German dictator Adolf Hitler committed suicide the same day in his underground bunker.

Flags with a Russian connection, among other symbols, were banned from Soviet memorials in Berlin and their immediate surroundings on May 8 and 9 amid the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war , according to a press release from the Berlin police. World War II veterans, diplomats and other representatives taking part in commemorative events marking the end of the war at these locations were excluded from the regulations. Bans were also in place in 2023 and 2022 , the year Russia invaded Ukraine. ___ This is part of the AP’s effort to address widely shared false and misleading information that is circulating online. Generative AI can turn your most precious memories into photos that never existed

The Synthetic Memories project is helping families around the world reclaim a past that was never caught on camera.

  • Will Douglas Heaven archive page

Maria grew up in Barcelona, Spain, in the 1940s. Her first memories of her father are vivid. As a six-year-old, Maria would visit a neighbor’s apartment in her building when she wanted to see him. From there, she could peer through the railings of a balcony into the prison below and try to catch a glimpse of him through the small window of his cell, where he was locked up for opposing the dictatorship of Francisco Franco.

There is no photo of Maria on that balcony. But she can now hold something like it: a fake photo—or memory-based reconstruction, as the Barcelona-based design studio Domestic Data Streamers puts it—of the scene that a real photo might have captured. The fake snapshots are blurred and distorted, but they can still rewind a lifetime in an instant.

“It’s very easy to see when you’ve got the memory right, because there is a very visceral reaction,” says Pau Garcia, founder of Domestic Data Streamers. “It happens every time. It’s like, ‘Oh! Yes! It was like that!’”

a generated black and white image of people dancing

Dozens of people have now had their memories turned into images in this way via Synthetic Memories , a project run by Domestic Data Streamers. The studio uses generative image models, such as OpenAI’s DALL-E, to bring people’s memories to life. Since 2022, the studio, which has received funding from the UN and Google, has been working with immigrant and refugee communities around the world to create images of scenes that have never been photographed, or to re-create photos that were lost when families left their previous homes.

Now Domestic Data Streamers is taking over a building next to the Barcelona Design Museum to record people’s memories of the city using synthetic images. Anyone can show up and contribute a memory to the growing archive, says Garcia.

Synthetic Memories could prove to be more than a social or cultural endeavor. This summer, the studio will start a collaboration with researchers to find out if its technique could be used to treat dementia.

Memorable graffiti

The idea for the project came from an experience Garcia had in 2014, when he was working in Greece with an organization that was relocating refugee families from Syria. A woman told him that she was not afraid of being a refugee herself, but she was afraid of her children and grandchildren staying refugees because they might forget their family history: where they shopped, what they wore, how they dressed.

Garcia got volunteers to draw the woman’s memories as graffiti on the walls of the building where the families were staying. “They were really bad drawings, but the idea for synthetic memories was born,” he says. Several years later, when Garcia saw what generative image models could do, he remembered that graffiti. ”It was one of the first things that came to mind,” he says.

a generated image of a mother walking on a footpath with three children in a green field

The process that Garcia and his team have developed is simple. An interviewer sits down with a subject and gets the person to recall a specific scene or event. A prompt engineer with a laptop uses that recollection to write a prompt for a model, which generates an image.

His team has built up a kind of glossary of prompting terms that have proved to be good at evoking different periods in history and different locations. But there’s often some back and forth, some tweaks to the prompt, says Garcia: “You show the image generated from that prompt to the subject and they might say, ‘Oh, the chair was on that side’ or ‘It was at night, not in the day.’ You refine it until you get it to a point where it clicks.”

So far Domestic Data Streamers has used the technique to preserve the memories of people in various migrant communities, including Korean, Bolivian, and Argentine families living in São Paolo, Brazil. But it has also worked with a care home in Barcelona to see how memory-based reconstructions might help older people. The team collaborated with researchers in Barcelona on a small pilot with 12 subjects, applying the approach to reminiscence therapy—a treatment for dementia that aims to stimulate cognitive abilities by showing someone images of the past. Developed in the 1960s, reminiscence therapy has many proponents, but researchers disagree on how effective it is and how it should be done.

The pilot allowed the team to refine the process and ensure that participants could give informed consent, says Garcia. The researchers are now planning to run a larger clinical study in the summer with colleagues at the University of Toronto to compare the use of generative image models with other therapeutic approaches.

One thing they did discover in the pilot was that older people connected with the images much better if they were printed out. “When they see them on a screen, they don’t have the same kind of emotional relation to them,” says Garcia. “But when they could see it physically, the memory got much more important.”

Blurry is best

The researchers have also found that older versions of generative image models work better than newer ones. They started the project using two models that came out in 2022: DALL-E 2 and Stable Diffusion, a free-to-use generative image model released by Stability AI. These can produce images that are glitchy, with warped faces and twisted bodies. But when they switched to the latest version of Midjourney (another generative image model that can create more detailed images), the results did not click with people so well.

“If you make something super-realistic, people focus on details that were not there,” says Garcia. “If it’s blurry, the concept comes across better. Memories are a bit like dreams. They do not behave like photographs, with forensic details. You do not remember if the chair was red or green. You simply remember that there was a chair.”

a group of people cluster around a synthetic memory with expressions of surprise

The team has since gone back to using the older models. “For us, the glitches are a feature,” says Garcia. “Sometimes things can be there and not there. It’s kind of a quantum state in the images that works really well with memories.”

Sam Lawton, an independent filmmaker who is not involved with the studio, is excited by the project. He’s especially happy that the team will be looking at the cognitive effects of these images in a rigorous clinical study. Lawton has used generative image models to re-create his own memories. In a film he made last year, called Expanded Childhood , he used DALL-E to extend old family photos beyond their borders, blurring real childhood scenes with surreal ones.

“The effect exposure to this kind of generated imagery has on a person's brain was what spurred me to make the film in the first place,” says Lawton. “I was not in a position to launch a full-blown research effort, so I pivoted to the kind of storytelling that's most natural to me.”

Lawton’s work explores a number of questions: What will long-term exposure to AI-generated or altered images have on us? Can such images help reframe traumatic memories? Or do they create a false sense of reality that can lead to confusion and cognitive dissonance?

Lawton showed the images in Expanded Childhood to his father and included his comments in the film: “Something’s wrong. I don’t know what that is. Do I just not remember it?”

Garcia is aware of the dangers of confusing subjective memories with real photographic records. His team’s memory-based reconstructions are not meant to be taken as factual documents, he says. In fact, he notes that this is another reason to stick with the less photorealistic images produced by older versions of generative image models. “It is important to differentiate very clearly what is synthetic memory and what is photography,” says Garcia. “This is a simple way to show that.”

Photos Projects only appear on 1 Mac not on all devices signed in to the same account

I created a Project in Photos on my desktop Mac but that project does not appear when I open Photos on my Macbook. I am signed into the same account on both Macs. All the photos and albums appear on both but not the Projects. I'm running Ventura on both Macs.

Same answer as I gave to your previous identical question.

Projects do not sync via icloud - they are only available on the device you created them.

As a workaround, you can export your slide show as a video, then import that video into photos to view it on your macbook or other devices.

Students expelled for blackface picture handed $1,000,000 after revealing truth

Two teenage boys were forced out of Saint Francis High School after posting a photo that some alleged was depicting blackface

Two teenage boys expelled from school after being accused of an alleged blackface photo have been awarded $1million each after proving it was green acne medication.

The ex-students and their parents sued Saint Francis High School, an elite Catholic institution in Mountain View, California , after a photo emerged of the two boys and a friend wearing what they claimed were acne treatment masks.

A boy identified as A.H. in August 2017 wore a green mask his mother bought for severe acne and took a bathroom selfie with another boy who donned a white acne mask, states the lawsuit.

A day later, A.H., a friend referenced as H.H., and a third boy took a photo of themselves with green medication on their faces apparently as a show of solidarity.

Two former students and their parents sued Saint Francis High School

The boys said it was a joke and not a racial insult, but the photo went viral and many labeled it as depicting blackface.

A Santa Clara County jury on Monday sided with the boys’ claims that the school breached oral contract and had a lack of due process in forcing them out, the San Francisco Chronicle reported. The jury awarded the money and tuition reimbursement to the two former students.

‘Our primary goal was to clear (our clients’) names,’ stated the plaintiffs’ lawyer, Krista Baughman.

‘It was quite clear the jury believed these were innocent face masks. They are young kids, their internet trail is going to haunt them for the next 60 years. Now they don’t have to worry about that.’

Saint Francis High School is an elite Catholic school in Mountain View, California

The boys lost on their other claims of breach of contract, free speech violation and defamation. The suit initially demanded $20million.

Saint Francis officials stated that they ‘respectfully disagree with the jury’s conclusion as to the lesser claim regarding the fairness of our disciplinary review process’ and will be ‘exploring legal options’ including appealing the judgement.

Frank Hughes, the dad of one of the students, said the teens tried to enroll in other high schools but Saint Francis refused to disclose the reason for their transfer, which prevented his son from playing football at his new school for a year. Hughes moved his family to Utah so his son could play football in his senior year.

Saint Francis is required to reimburse Hughesfsevere for the moving and living expenses after the jury’s verdict.

Bread and bagels at The Works Cafe in downtown Portland. Photo by Aimsel Ponti

From New York-style boiled bagels to Montreal-inspired wood-fired ones, there’s lots of great bagels in southern Maine and several shops have the accolades to back that up.

In 2023, Bon Appetit named bagels from Rose Foods and Rover Bagel among the best in the country.

Two years before that,  Food & Wine Magazine put Rover, Forage and Scratch Baking Co. on its list of best bagels in the U.S.

Whether you like yours toasted with cream cheese or as the bread for your breakfast sandwich, you can find plenty of styles and flavors from Biddeford to Brunswick.

BEACH BAGELS

The offerings at Beach Bagels include a French toast and marble bagel, and the cream cheese menu comprises spreads like strawberry, olive and honey walnut. Along with breakfast sandwiches, Beach Bagels has hearty breakfast options like omelets and pancakes. Best of all, you’re steps away from a beach stroll. Just don’t let the seagulls steal your bagel. WHEN: 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily WHERE: 34 Old Orchard St., Old Orchard Beach. beachbagels.yolasite.com ______________

Dutchman’s opened in 2022 as a pop-up housed at Nomad pizza in Brunswick’s Fort Andross building. It’s since become a permanent fixture there and uses the pizzeria’s wood-fired ovens to bake its bagels. The hand-shaped, honey-boiled bagels come in plain, roasted garlic, poppy and a bagel-of-the-day flavor.

WHEN: 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday to Sunday WHERE: Fort Andross, 14 Maine St., Brunswick. dutchmans.me ______________

FORAGE MARKET

Making bagels at Forage Market involves a two-day aging process. The bagels are naturally leavened with wild yeast starter and baked next to a hardwood fire. There are usually five flavors available, including sesame and garlic. Breakfast sandwiches (including vegan options) are available. Forage also has a location in Lewiston. Advertisement

WHEN: 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday and Sunday WHERE: 123 Washington Ave., Portland. foragemarket.com _____________

MISTER BAGEL

There are 10 or so Mister Bagel locations in Maine, including South Portland and Falmouth. It all began with the Portland location, which was the first bagel shop to open in Maine. The late Rick Hartglass started Mister Bagel in 1977, and it is still a family business. Music fans will appreciate the breakfast sandwich menu, which includes The David Bowie (bacon, egg and American cheese), the Jimmy Buffett (egg with roast beef and cheddar) and The Lady Gaga (avocado, salt and pepper, with or without egg).

WHEN: 6:30 a.m. to noon Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to noon Saturday and Sunday WHERE: 599 Forest Ave., Portland. misterbagelforestave.com ______________

At Rose Foods, the menu varies depending on the day, but there are usually six to eight flavors available. For example, should you pop in on a Friday, you’ll find a poppy and onion bialy (a cousin of the bagel that is not boiled). Rose Foods also makes a number of bagel sandwiches, including the Classic Nova with Nova lox and the Classic Whitefish. Advertisement

WHEN: 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. daily WHERE: 428 Forest Ave., Portland. rosefoods.me

ROVER BAGEL

At Rover Bagel, you’ll find wood-fired plain, poppy, sea salt, sesame and everything bagels available most of the time, and the spread game here is strong with cream cheese options like lemon-thyme-honey cream and chili-garlic.

SCRATCH BAKING CO.

You haven’t lived until you’ve experienced the line of devoted fans waiting for Scratch Baking Co. to open, especially on weekend mornings. Along with the popular Maine sea salt, plain and other everyday flavors, Scratch has a daily special bagel. There’s honeyed rosemary on Wednesday and jalapeno cheddar on Thursday. Scratch is also famous, at least to locals, for its P-Cheese spread. It’s a pimento cheese recipe made with cheddar, mayo, roasted red peppers and seasoning and was passed down to co-owner and head baker Allison Reid by her grandmother, Mern.

WHEN: 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday to Saturday, 7 a.m. to noon Sunday WHERE: 416 Preble St., South Portland. scratchbakingco.com ___________

THE MAINE BAGEL

The Maine Bagel is a drive-thru with several breakfast and other kinds of sandwiches available. With a bagel list that features egg and bialy among the standards, the family-owned spot is the perfect place to stop on your way to Pine Point Beach. The Maine Bagel really shines with a dozen kinds of cream cheese spreads, including raisin-walnut, lox, strawberry, cranberry-nut and bacon-chive.

THE WORKS CAFE

The Works Cafe is an institution on the edge of the Portland’s Old Port. It opened in 1990 as Bagel Works before it changed its name in 2002. The original shop in this regional chain opened in Manchester, Vermont, in 1988, and there are 11 locations around New England, though just the one in Maine. Gone are the ’90s-era banana-walnut bagels and cold pizza cream cheese, but The Works Cafe is still a reliable place to grab a salt, multigrain or cinnamon raisin bagel, among others. The menu also has bowls, sandwiches and smoothies.

WHEN: 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily WHERE: 15 Temple St., Portland. workscafe.com
