Starting Broiler Poultry Farming Business in South Africa – Business Plan (PDF, Word & Excel)

Broiler poultry farming business is a very profitable venture to start in South Africa, with lucrative returns. There continues to be an increase in the demand for meat products in South Africa, especially chicken. This is because a lot of consumers substitute beef and lamb with poultry. Also, there are many who prefer white meat over red meat for various health reasons. Chicken meat consumption is expected to continue to increase over the years. The demand for chicken in South Africa is very high, in excess of 2.2 million tonnes per annum. In South Africa, b roiler poultry meat has the highest per capita consumption than all other meats. This is the case as chicken remains the most affordable source of animal protein in South Africa.

The model of this business is raising broiler chickens for sale. How you’re going to sell them can be varied depending on your target niche. In principle, your choice of target market will be informed by your scale of production. Some of the sales avenues are selling them as live birds, selling them after slaughtering as whole birds or selling them as apportioned chicken pieces. This article will outline how to start a broiler poultry farming business in South Africa, and the broiler poultry farming business plan – PDF, Word and Excel.

Starting a poultry farming business in South Africa is a profitable venture. Compared to other livestock businesses, a poultry business is one of the easiest to set up. The startup costs are on the low side, and the potential to generate profit is much higher. However before you start a broiler chicken farming business in South Africa, there are some important decisions which you have to make. You have to decide on the size of your broiler chicken production business ie how many broilers you will have at your poultry farm.  You also have to decide on the location of your broiler poultry farm, and your target market. The size of your broiler poultry farming business will depend on the amount of capital you have, the size of the land, and your target market. It’s important that you get a good broiler chicken farming business plan before you start the broiler poultry farming business in South Africa.

Market Research

When setting up your broiler chicken business, you need to understand the marketing environment in which you will be operating. You must know who your competitors are and what your target market looks like. For your business to succeed, it helps to understand consumer behavior, what consumers want, and how your potential customers make their buying decisions or react to changes. Adequate market research will also properly position you to beat your competitors. You can “spy” on your competitors in order to develop a better strategy. Market research helps you price your chickens competitively. There are plenty of large and small broiler chicken suppliers, so you may not be able to penetrate the market if your chickens are not priced well. If your prices are too high, you risk turning off potential consumers, and if your chicken prices are too low, consumers may not trust your quality. There is a need to find a balance when pricing your chickens and marketing them, and proper market research will help you do that. Ensure that you do your own personal research by reading industry publications, speaking to industry players, and simply talking to people.

Land for Broiler Poultry Farming Business

You need land – this is where you will build the poultry broiler housing. Sustainability of the land must be thoroughly assessed beforehand. The location must be very strategic i.e. near major road networks, with reliable water supply, near the market and close to cheap labour. The size of the land your business require will depend on the scale of your broiler chicken farming business.

Business Model

There are numerous business models to choose from when it comes to chicken farming, but this article will focus on raising day-old chicks for meat. With this business model, you rear the chickens, feed them until they are large enough to be sold alive or slaughtered for meat. Broiler chickens are raised from the day they are born until they are 5-6 weeks old, at which point they are processed at an abattoir and the meat is sold. Like any other livestock farming business, you need to consider the animal feed, vaccinations, and transport costs. Other factors, such as the type of equipment you will use to rear the chickens and the availability of land, are also important considerations. It is important that your poultry business is close to the market or abattoir where you plan on selling the chickens. The further away your farm is from the market, the higher your costs become. You must be aware of your municipality’s specific animal keeping bylaws in order to locate your farm in the right place.

Housing and Equipment for Broiler Chicken Production Business

Proper housing is required for your broiler chickens. For small scale broiler poultry farming business you can make use of existing infrastructure that you have. However for medium to large scale commercial broiler poultry farming business, you have to construct broiler poultry housing designed specifically for the broilers.

Broiler chickens are sensitive to fluctuating or extreme temperatures. This means that your broiler housing must ensure properly regulated and optimum temperatures suited for the birds. The broiler chicken house should have adequate ventilation and lighting. Your monitoring devices are the actual chickens themselves; close attention will inform you on whether or not the conditions are optimum. When the temperature is too high chickens tend to hyperventilate i.e. their breathing rate is elevated and you see this by their breathing as if they’re gasping for air. If the temperature is too low they have a tendency to crowd and squeeze themselves in a corner or at one spot. The other consideration on housing is to avoid direct sunlight – you can achieve this by aligning your housing unit along an east to west latitude.

The broiler chicken housing unit must also allow for adequate and free movement for each bird. Each broiler bird need about 0.1 square metres. Some of the key equipment needed for a broiler poultry farming business include feeders, drinkers and lighting system. Your broiler chicken farming business plan should take into consideration the costs of purchasing equipment and broiler housing.

Broiler Day Old Chicks

Broiler day old chicks are required when starting a broiler poultry farming business in South Africa. When purchasing the day old chicks please do your homework prior. It’s important to buy day old chicks from reputable and professional suppliers. Getting good quality day old chicks plays a pivotal role in producing broiler chickens with high growth potential and good quality broiler poultry meat. Poor quality day old chicks will result in high mortality rates and poor growth. If possible, make your choice based on other people’s past or current experiences with the various suppliers of day old chicks in South Africa. After purchasing the broiler day old chicks, transport them carefully as they will need to be handled with care to avoid mortality. Your commercial broiler poultry farming business plan should include the costs of purchasing day old chicks.

Feed and Nutrition for Broiler Chickens

Poultry feeds and water are necessary for meat production, resistance to diseases and growth. To maximise profit in the commercial broiler chicken farming business, you should minimise the costs, minimise mortality, and optimise for the target weight of the broilers. You should give broiler feeds to your chickens. There are many stock feed companies in South Africa which sell broiler chicken feeds. Broiler chicken feeds are formulated to provide all the necessary nutrients required for the health and efficient growth of the chickens. There are 3 types of broiler feeds which you should give to your birds depending on their growth stage. These are Broiler Starter feeds, Broiler Grower Feeds and Broiler Finisher Feeds. Ensure that you give adequate feed and water to your broilers. Your broiler production business plan should take into account the cost of the broiler feeds.

Management and Labour

The number of employees needed for your broiler farming business will depend on the size of your broiler poultry farm. At the minimum you need broiler poultry attendants who will keep the chickens. Their duties include f eeding the broilers, providing water to the broilers, cleaning and disinfecting the building and equipment, removal of litter and other day to day duties. Your broiler farming business plan should take into account the salaries and wages of your employees.

Marketing And Sales Strategies

Marketing broilers will not be that difficult because there is a ready market for them. Like any other business, you still need to market it to increase revenue. Some of the marketing strategies you can apply include targeting a market larger than your supply. It is wise to segment your market first before you start production. Putting production first before marketing your business is a mistake common among small farmers, and other businesses. If you put production first without discovering and segmenting your prospective buyer, you risk getting stranded. Rearing broilers can take a month and half, so you need to have a ready market by the time your chickens are fully grown. You can discover your potential market by visiting butcheries, supermarkets, schools, and restaurants to present your proposal before production. This way, you can even discover how they feel about your pricing and what their expectations are. Consider using social media to advertise your business as well. Social media remains one of the cheapest forms of advertising. You can take advantage of paid Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter ads to market your business. If you plan on rearing a large number of broiler chickens, consider using a middleman or distributor to sell your chickens. If you have the capital for it, you can set up your own retail outlet.

Market for Broiler Chickens in South Africa

The demand for chicken in South Africa is very high, in excess of 2.2 million tonnes per annum. South Africa doesn’t produce sufficient quantities of broiler meat to satisfy its demand, with the shortfall addressed through imports, mainly from Brazil.  Chicken is the most consumed meat in South Africa. You can supply your broiler chickens to individuals, supermarkets, restaurants, hotels, butcheries, abattoirs and organisations.

Advantages of Broiler Poultry Farming

When it comes to livestock farming, broilers are worth the investment. Broiler farming can give you some of the best returns compared to rearing other animals. It only takes 5-6 weeks for you to start selling your chickens. In terms of maintenance, poultry farm structures are relatively simple. Diseases and illnesses can be reduced by practicing proper hygiene and care. Many consumers in South Africa complain about the quality of chickens they get from the supermarket, so generating revenue from your broiler business will not take long. This is because the quality of chicken you get from a farm is much better than from a supermarket. Also, the production costs of setting up a broiler farm are reasonable. You can easily start by raising chickens in your backyard and gradually increasing production as your business grows. You do not need a lot of space for the chickens.

Keys to Profitability

Since running a broiler business is relatively simple, some of the ways you can increase profit are through marketing your business, staying up to date with industry trends, and pricing your birds competitively. Another way you can become competitive is by delivering your birds to your customers. Simply make sure that you feed your birds with the right feed so that their weight is good enough for the market. Ensure that they are also immunized and treated to avoid illness. If you take good care of your birds, you can easily run a profitable broiler farming business.

Getting Started with Broiler Chicken Production in South Africa

Broiler chickens on the farm. Selective focus.

Broiler chicken production is a lucrative venture in South Africa, given the growing demand for poultry meat. Whether you’re a small-scale farmer or looking to establish a commercial operation, understanding the essential steps and best practices is crucial for success. Here’s a comprehensive guide to help you get started.

1. Research and Planning

Market research.

Understanding the market dynamics is the first step. Assess the demand for broiler chickens in your area, identify potential buyers, and study the competition. Determine the best breed for your climate and market needs; popular breeds include Ross 308 , Cobb 500, and Arbor Acres .

Business Plan

Draft a detailed business plan outlining your goals, budget, production scale, and marketing strategy. This plan should include cost estimates for purchasing chicks, feed, housing, equipment , and other operational expenses.

2. Sourcing Chicks

Selecting a reliable supplier.

Choose a reputable hatchery to source your day-old broiler chicks . Ensure they are vaccinated against common diseases such as Newcastle Disease and Infectious Bronchitis.

Breed Selection

For high growth rates and feed efficiency, consider breeds like Ross 308, which are well-suited for commercial production.

3. Housing and Equipment

Broiler house.

Construct a broiler house that provides adequate space, ventilation, and protection from predators and extreme weather. A controlled environment will help maintain optimal temperature and humidity levels, crucial for chick health.

Essential equipment includes feeders , drinkers , heating systems (brooders), and lighting. Automated systems can improve efficiency but may require a higher initial investment.

4. Feeding and Nutrition

Provide high-quality feed formulated for broilers at different growth stages. Starter feed (0-3 weeks), grower feed (3-5 weeks), and finisher feed (5 weeks to slaughter) have specific nutrient compositions to support optimal growth.

Feeding Schedule

Ensure chicks have continuous access to clean water and feed. Monitor their consumption and growth to adjust feed quantities as needed.

5. Health Management

Vaccination.

Follow a strict vaccination schedule to protect your flock from diseases. Consult a veterinarian to develop a tailored vaccination plan.

Biosecurity

Implement biosecurity measures to prevent disease outbreaks. This includes controlling access to the broiler house, sanitizing equipment, and maintaining clean surroundings.

6. Daily Management

Regularly monitor the flock for signs of illness, stress, or abnormal behavior. Weigh a sample of birds weekly to track growth rates and adjust feed as necessary.

Record Keeping

Maintain detailed records of feed consumption, growth rates, health interventions, and mortality. This data is vital for managing performance and making informed decisions.

7. Marketing and Sales

Identifying buyers.

Identify potential buyers such as local markets, supermarkets, restaurants, and wholesalers. Building a reliable customer base is essential for sustained business.

Determine competitive pricing by considering production costs, market rates, and profit margins. Offering quality products consistently can justify higher prices.

8. Compliance and Regulations

Ensure you comply with local regulations regarding poultry farming. This may include obtaining necessary licenses and adhering to animal welfare standards.

Environmental Impact

Manage waste effectively to minimize environmental impact. Proper disposal of litter and waste is crucial for sustainable farming practices.

9. Continuous Learning and Improvement

Stay updated with the latest advancements in broiler production through workshops, seminars, and online courses. Networking with other farmers can provide valuable insights and support.

Experimentation

Continuously experiment with different feed formulations, housing systems, and management practices to optimize your production processes.

Starting broiler chicken production in South Africa requires careful planning, investment, and management. By following these steps, you can establish a profitable and sustainable broiler farming business. As you gain experience, continually refine your practices to improve efficiency and productivity, ensuring long-term success in the poultry industry.

How to Run a Poultry Business

Updated on 25 May 2022

article featured image

When looking at agriculture trends , starting a poultry business is always one of the most popular options. The Department of Agriculture, Land Reform, and Rural Development has called on young people to take advantage of the growing poultry industry and start small farming businesses . If done right, it can be seriously profitable.

Poultry farming is relatively easy to start. You don’t need huge amounts of space or enormous startup capital. In fact, you could even start a poultry business in your back garden.

In this guide, we’ll break down how to start a poultry business in South Africa, what specific requirements are needed, and how much a poultry business costs to start.

How Can I Start a Poultry Business?

Compared to other agricultural businesses , poultry farming is one of the easiest to get into. The startup costs are on the lower side, and the profit potential can be great.

To start a poultry business, you will first need the right land. The good news is that, in comparison to other types of livestock farming , poultry requires significantly less land. The amount of land you need depends on how many birds you plan to keep, what type of poultry production you plan to run, and what type of poultry housing system you will use. Poultry housing systems include free-range systems, battery-cage systems, and deep litter systems.

You’ll also need to establish what sector of poultry farming you will be focusing on. Will you be farming poultry for eggs or meat? You could also raise day-old chicks and sell them to other farmers or hatch eggs and sell them to companies and small farms. Your poultry business will require suitable bird housing for whatever type of business you choose to create.

To keep animals for farming purposes, you will need to understand your local municipality’s specific animal-keeping bylaws. These regulations will determine where your poultry farm can be located, how the animals are maintained, and various other regulations. Contact your local municipality for this.

Some other considerations when starting a poultry business include feed , vaccinations, and transport costs. Your poultry business should be within close range of the market or abattoir where you plan to sell the chickens. The further away it is, the higher your costs rise. The type of chicken feed you need changes depending on the age of the chicken. This feed can be expensive. Chickens also need to get vaccinated when hatched.

The importance of mentorship for SMEs

Which Poultry is Most Profitable?

Chicken farming can be highly profitable in South Africa as the market is large and continues to grow. The demand for chickens and eggs is high, presenting plenty of opportunities for new farmers.

Farming with layers on a large scale is generally more profitable than broiler farming.

It’s important to choose the right breed of chickens for your poultry farm . This should be determined based on egg or meat production and where you will be raising them. The types of chickens you raise should also determine the type of poultry housing you use.

How Much Does it Cost to Start Poultry Farming in South Africa?

On average, it costs between R 20 000 to R 50 000 to start a chicken farm poultry business in South Africa. This will differ depending on the size of the farm, what type of housing you will be using, where the farm is located, and the breeds you will be farming.

Growing a day-old chick typically costs around R 40 to the point of sale. Raising a box of 100 day-old chicks typically costs between R 850 to R 950.

A zinc structure to house 500 chicks will generally cost between R 16 000 to R 20 000. Brick structures are more expensive. Always consider additional costs, too, like feed, transport, and vaccines and antibiotics.

There are many low-cost agricultural ideas available such as starting a rabbit farm or agro-processing business . Compared to other options, starting a poultry business remains one of the most popular ideas thanks to its relatively low barrier to entry combined with the high profit potential of this agricultural sector.

Just remember that poultry farming is a numbers game. The more birds you are able to raise, the more profitable the business will be. Starting small is always a good idea, but try to leave room for growth as your business develops. If you start in an area that is too small, your profit potential will be limited.

With the right location, business plan, and poultry stock, this could be one of the most rewarding agricultural ventures possible.

Are you an up-and-coming farmer looking to generate a sustainable income? Chickens might be the best option for you. Not only are chickens great multipurpose animals, being a great source of eggs, meat, and fertiliser, they are also fast growing and provide an income quickly.

It might be a great time to enter the industry: 2020 also saw the introduction of a new poultry sector masterplan for the country, announced by the department of trade and industry. It aims to stimulate local demand, boost exports and protect the domestic chicken industry.

These facts may be enough to convince you to finally take the plunge and start farming with chickens. If so, you’re in luck, because we’ve compiled a list of the things you should know if you want to start your own chicken farm this year.

  • This article is a shortened version of our Farmer’s Inside Track guide “ How to start a chicken farm ”, which you can download for free here . It features links to handy online research resources for prospective chicken farmers. It also contains more information on each of the topics in this article.

1. Starting out

If you’re a small-scale producer interested in starting your own poultry business, it’s important to decide which sector of the industry you want to serve. This will determine how you go about setting up a business and making money.

There are two options for entering the poultry business: One is to hatch and sell day-old chicks to the big producers, a second is to buy day-old chicks yourself and grow them, selling their eggs or the chickens themselves as fully-grown chickens.

2. Find a market

broiler chicken farming business plan south africa

“The first advice I would give someone who is just starting would be to make sure that they have a market for (the chickens or eggs),” says Masimbonge Vuma, owner of Indyebo-Agricultural Co-operative. “Before worrying about what type of breed to farm, housing equipment, and the amount of capital they need there must be a market.”

Even if you know nothing about formal market research practices, you can do your own research by setting out to learn more about your potential customers and distribution channels.

3. Chickens for eggs or chickens for meat?

Manyano Rasmeni, owner of Rasmeni’s Farming. Photo: Supplied

“Poultry farming is a wide industry, so a person must decide if he wants to farm broilers (meat production) or layers (egg production),” says Vuma. “Or both if they have enough resources.”

“It’s important to choose the correct chicken breed for the market you have identified,” says Manyano Rasmeni, owner of Rasmeni’s Farming. “There’s layer chickens and there are broiler chickens, for eggs and meat respectively.”

Our Farmer’s Inside Track guide “How to start a chicken farm” provides more detail on how to choose between “chickens for egg production” and “chickens for meat production”, as well as an overview of the best breeds to consider. Download it  here .

4. Building a chicken coop

A good chicken coop should give your chickens a comfortable and healthy environment that is secure and clean and has enough space for all the chickens. The chicken house should also be well-ventilated to discourage the occurrence of disease among your chickens.

Anything that disrupts the comfort of the chickens in the poultry house will significantly impact the feed intake which subsequently affects the egg production and the weight gain for chickens that are raised for meat.

5. Feed

“Feed is the one factor that every poultry farmer complains about,” says Rasmeni. “Because feed takes about 60 to 70% of your operational costs.”

start your own chicken farm

This means that minimising the cost of operations by reducing the feed is your best option of increasing profits. Rasmeni advises you to buy directly from suppliers and manufacturers to avoid agents’ mark-ups.

When you decide on the number of chicks you want to start with, make sure that you know how much and the type of feed that is required for them.

6. Equipment

“You must make sure there are enough feeders and drinkers inside the chicken coop,” says Vuma. “On the farm we make sure that there are 12 birds per nipple drinker, and 45 birds per pan feeder.”

For bedding you can use wood shavings, dry saw dust or chopped straw.

If you want more tips on building a chicken coop, and the basic equipment you need, click here  for our Farmer’s Inside Track guide “How to start a chicken farm”.

7. Disease management

Disease management is a great challenge for small-scale farmers, because it results in poultry not performing optimally, eventually driving up costs and negatively affecting your earnings.

Birds that are sick or recovering from a disease generally eat less and produce less meat or eggs. Some diseases can be treated, which adds to cost of production, but in extreme cases, whole flocks might have to be culled to eradicate a disease. Dead chicks should be removed and buried in a hole in the ground. Sick and weak chicks should be kept separately and given special care.

“Prevention is better than cure,” says Rasmeni. “Chickens have different stages where you need to give them vaccinations against viruses and diseases to protect them.”

8. Marketing your chickens and eggs

“This is the most important section when you are done raising your broilers,” says Vuma. “When it is time to sell them, it will be alive per bird or on a weight basis.”

If you sell through a middleman you will lose some profit. Otherwise you will have to dress, pluck and eviscerate the chicken yourself if you don’t sell to an abattoir for processing.

“This is time consuming, but worth it,” says Vuma.

South Africa, a land of diverse landscapes and rich agricultural traditions, has embraced poultry farming as a cornerstone of its agricultural economy.

Poultry Farming in South Africa

The Genesis of Poultry Farming

The transition from backyard flocks to commercial poultry farms marked the beginning of a transformative era.

What is Poultry Farming

Poultry farming is a dynamic agricultural practice centered on the breeding and rearing of domesticated birds, primarily chickens, ducks, turkeys, and geese.

Poultry farming is not only a vital component of the global food industry but also a key economic driver for many nations, including South Africa

How to Start Poultry Farming

The below tips will help on poultry farming for beginners:

Selecting the appropriate breed is critical. Consider factors such as climate, market demand, and your farming goals. For meat production, broiler breeds like Cobb or Ross are popular, while for eggs, breeds like White Leghorn or Rhode Island Red are common choices.

Preventive health measures are crucial in poultry farming. Develop a vaccination schedule in consultation with a veterinarian to protect your flock from common diseases. Regular health checks and hygiene practices are essential components of health management.

Access to clean and ample water is vital for poultry. Ensure a consistent and reliable water supply within the poultry housing. Regularly check water quality and cleanliness to safeguard the health of your birds.

Protect your poultry from disease outbreaks by implementing strict biosecurity measures. Control access to the farm, sanitize equipment, and practice proper waste disposal to minimize the risk of infections.

Visionary farmers played a pivotal role in shaping the trajectory of poultry farming in South Africa. Their commitment to adopting modern farming practices, coupled with a dedication to quality and efficiency, set the stage for the industry’s exponential growth.

Breeds and Varieties

South Africa boasts a diverse range of poultry breeds suited to its climate and market demands. From the hardy Boschveld to the prolific Ross 308, farmers carefully select breeds based on factors like climate resilience, egg production, and meat quality.

A critical aspect of poultry farming in South Africa is the formulation of nutritious feeds. Local farmers meticulously balance proteins, grains, and supplements to ensure optimal growth and health of their flocks. The emphasis on sustainable and locally sourced feed ingredients is a testament to the industry’s commitment to environmental responsibility.

Economic Wingspan: The Impact of Poultry Farming in South Africa

FAQs: Unraveling Poultry Farming Mysteries

How do farmers manage disease outbreaks in poultry farms?

Technology is integral to modern poultry farming, encompassing automated feeding systems, climate control, and data analytics for efficient management and resource optimization.

How is the environmental impact of poultry farming addressed?

4 Ways How Inhumane Farming Methods Affect Animals

Factory farms, in particular, may prioritize maximizing output over the well-being of the animals. Chickens, pigs, and cows are frequently kept in confined spaces, unable to express natural behaviors. This confinement not only compromises the physical health of the animals but also contributes to heightened stress levels and increased susceptibility to diseases.

The journey from farm to slaughterhouse is often fraught with inhumane practices. Animals may be subjected to rough handling, overcrowded transport conditions, and extended periods without food or water. Improper handling and transportation can result in injuries, stress-related illnesses, and even death. For animals raised for meat, the last moments of their lives should be approached with compassion and care, but inhumane practices can make this transition needlessly traumatic.

Conclusion: Soaring High, Feathers Unruffled

In the world of poultry farming in South Africa, the feathers are unruffled, and the horizon is limitless.

Here’s what it will cost you to start your own chicken farm in South Africa

You are currently viewing Here’s what it will cost you to start your own chicken farm in South Africa

Article by: Business Insider

  • The South African poultry industry has room for growth and the Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development has called on young people to take advantage.
  • On average, it could cost you between R20,000 to 50,000 to start your own chicken farm, depending on how big or small you’re starting.
  • It costs between R38 to R40 to grow a day-old chick to a point of sale, and one box of 100 day-old chicks costs between R850 to R950.

The South African poultry industry has growth opportunities for new entrepreneurs and small-scale farmers, so now might be the best time to enter the industry, but you’re going to need at least R20,000 to 50,000 to start a profitable business – depending on how big or small you’re starting.

According to Dr Nkhane Baldwin Nengovhela of the Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development,  the poultry  industry has a lot of room for growth  and so young people are being encouraged to take advantage of the business opportunities it presents.

“The poultry industry is one of the most advanced sectors in terms of farming in the world. I think all young people should consider it for farming. If you think of something called biotechnology, you can’t think of anything (other) than a day-old chick that is raised for meat, or a layer that is raised to be able to lay an egg,” he said in a virtual poultry masterclass webinar last week.

Starting up

For those who are interested in starting a small-scale chicken farm, the first step is to identify which part of the industry they want to grow in. One can either grow day-old chicks to sell them to other farmers or, you could hatch eggs and sell them to large companies and other aspiring small farms.

Some small-scale farmers that have been in the industry for over a decade do both.

Gladys Momubaghan, owner of Peezel Farm has been in the industry for 11 years, and on her farm she does it all.

Momubaghan and Lindokuhle Mtyoki, who started his poultry farm with 100 chicks in the Eastern Cape last year, share tips on the cost and knowledge needed to start a flourishing poultry business.

“The poultry industry is a numbers game”, said Momubaghan. “The more you have, the more profit you make. So start small with what you have.”

Structure

In order to keep chickens for farming purposes, you first need to familiarise yourself with animal keeping bylaws in your local municipality. These give guidelines as to where your farm can be situated, the maintenance of animals, and other regulations.

Once that is sorted and out of the way, you need to build a structure for your chickens. According to Momubaghan, a zinc structure is the best option. For 500 chicks she says, a zinc structure will cost you between R16,000 to R20,000.

Mtyoki, on the other hand, opted for a brick structure which set him back R45,000 to build. But he also suggests that zinc is cheaper.

From chicks to chickens

You need to know which market you are catering for. The broiler market – chickens for meat – or the layer market – these are chickens that lay eggs.

Depending on where you are in the country, a box of 100 day-old chicks will cost you between R850 to R950. If you’re buying 500 chicks from Momubaghan – who hatches her own – you’d need R4,200.

The cost to grow a chick to a point of sale varies from place to place. According to both Momubaghan and Mtyoki, growing a day-old chick to broiler point of sale (from 40 –45 grams to 2.2 kilograms) will cost you about R38 to R40.

“Feed is so expensive, and a lot of people are thinking of making their own, which is not easy,” cautioned Momubaghan.

She said it is important to note that chicken do not just eat anything.

“We have the starter, the broiler starter, broiler grower, broiler finisher. Around Pretoria, it ranges between R300 to R350.

“They don’t eat one thing throughout. They start with the one that gets their digestive system started. The grower which helps them grow faster, and then the finisher which gives them weight and meat,” she said.

In terms of price, Momubaghan said the starter costs about R350, the grower about R320, and the finisher about R300 for a bag.

The poultry is fed on a two-week schedule. If you are growing them for a period of 42 days or six weeks, then it’s two weeks for the starter, two weeks for the grower, and two weeks on the finisher.

According to Mtyoki, big corporations such as Rainbow chicken are at an advantage because they buy in bulk and therefore get a huge discount. This is not possible for small-scale farmers, and that’s why they end up paying more for feed.

Vaccines and antibiotics

On the first day of hatching, chicks need to get vaccinated. It is then the responsibility of the new owner to ensure that they get all the other vaccines and antibiotics they need as they grow. According to Momubaghan, there are about four vaccinations for the broilers and six for the layers.

It costs R120 to buy vaccines for 1,000 chickens.

Tips

When you start small, you have to be disciplined. Do not shy away from formal training, no matter how big or small. “Take every opportunity to learn,” said Momubaghan.

Business Model

The Broiler Poultry Farming Business Model revolves around a straightforward yet highly profitable process. It all begins with the purchase of day-old chicks, which serve as the foundation of your broiler flock. These chicks are carefully selected for their genetic potential to achieve rapid growth and efficient meat production. Once in your care, you provide them with the appropriate housing, ensuring optimal conditions for their growth and development. A crucial aspect of broiler farming is the efficient management of their diet, as the major expenses in this venture are attributed to the cost of day-old chicks and feed.

As the chicks grow, typically within a span of 5-7 weeks, they reach maturity, and this is when you can reap the rewards of your efforts. The broilers can be sold in two main forms: as live birds or as dressed birds, depending on the preferences of your target market. The revenue generated from selling these mature broilers significantly exceeds the input costs and operational expenses, resulting in a healthy profit margin. What makes this business model particularly attractive is its repetitiveness throughout the year, allowing you to maintain a consistent stream of income by continually raising and selling batches of broilers. This cyclical approach to broiler farming ensures financial stability and growth in your poultry venture.

Land for Broiler Poultry Farming

Selecting the right land is a fundamental step in establishing a successful broiler poultry farming operation. The choice of land can significantly impact the efficiency and profitability of your venture. When acquiring land for broiler poultry farming, it’s crucial to consider several key factors. Firstly, the location and accessibility of the land are paramount. The site should be easily reachable by road to facilitate the transportation of feed, day-old chicks, and mature birds, while also being situated at a distance away from residential or industrial areas to avoid unwanted noise and odors for neighboring inhabitants. Proximity to markets and suppliers can also reduce logistical challenges and costs.

Furthermore, ensure that sufficient water supply is readily available at the broiler farm, as water is essential for the health and well-being of the birds. Access to electricity is equally important to power the necessary equipment and lighting systems. To mitigate the risk of flooding, it’s advisable to construct the broiler house on elevated land with proper drainage systems in place. Low-lying areas should be avoided, as they are prone to flooding and can jeopardize the safety and well-being of your broiler flock. Also consider the availability of affordable labor, as staffing costs can significantly impact the profitability of your broiler chicken farming business.

You must assess zoning and regulatory requirements in the area to ensure that poultry farming is permitted. Compliance with local laws is essential to avoid legal issues. The size and layout of the land should be sufficient to accommodate your planned broiler housing, feed storage, and other necessary infrastructure. You should also consider environmental conditions, access to utilities, soil quality, security, and biosecurity measures. Evaluating these factors, along with the cost of land, will help you make an informed decision.

Broiler Poultry Housing

Good housing is an important aspect of the broiler poultry farming business. A good broiler house has the following features : it protects the broiler birds from adverse weather conditions, has a good ventilation system, gives adequate space for the broilers to move around, provides easy access to feed and water. Failure to provide good housing for your broilers will lead to disastrous loses for your poultry farming business. The broiler chicken house should be constructed in such a way that its long axis is in a east-west direction – this helps by minimizing the amount of sunlight that would enter the broiler house. A proper ventilation system should be available in the broiler house so as to provide fresh air to the birds and remove excess heat and moisture. The broiler chicken house should be designed to deal with both extremes – hot weather and cold weather. Good temperature control will enhance feed conversion and growth rate, making your broiler poultry farming business more profitable. The broiler poultry farming business plan should include the costs of the BROILER housing construction.

Equipment for Poultry Farm

Adequate poultry equipment is essential for raising healthy and profitable broiler chickens. Essential equipment for a broiler poultry farm include feeding equipment. Broilers chickens should have easy access to the poultry feeds – this is made possible by purchasing the right type of feeders. Good feeding equipment should : have a safe design for the chickens, provide clean & fresh feed to the broilers, offer easy access to the feed, and be easy to clean. You can use manual feeders or automatic feeding system depending on the size of your broiler poultry farm and your budget. Drinking equipment are also required when raising broiler chickens. Broilers should always have access to water as water is an important component which supports the growth of broiler chickens. Drinking equipment for broilers can be : water basin, automatic belly waterer, nipple drinker or manual drinker. Each type of poultry drinking equipment has its own advantages and disadvantages. Other additional equipment for a poultry farm include lighting system, heaters, brooders, weighing scales and waste disposal system. The cost of poultry farm equipment should be included in the poultry farming business plan.

Broiler Day Old Chicks

Healthy broiler day old chicks are required for you to be profitable in your poultry farming business. Good quality chicks will minimize the rate of mortality thus ensuring that a high number of birds will survive up to maturity – which implies more profitability for your broiler chickens farming business. Features of good quality broiler day old chicks include : a deep yellow colour, large well developed chick, navels which are well closed, no deformity on the body and the chicks should be active and alert. Research about your chicks supplier before purchasing – always buy the day old chicks from reputable and accredited hatcheries.  You can also consult other poultry farmers on where they purchase their day old chicks from. Day old chicks should be handled with care when transporting them to your farm to avoid mortality during the transportation. The broiler poultry farming business plan should include the costs of acquiring the broiler day old chicks.

Feed And Nutrition

Feed is required to support the growth of the broiler chickens. Broiler chickens require a variety of nutrients inorder to stay healthy and grow to their full potential. If you fail to provide adequate feed to the birds, they may die , or fail to reach the target weights, which may lead to financial loss of your poultry farming venture. Essential nutrients required by broiler chickens include proteins, vitamins, carbohydrates and minerals. These nutrients are all found in commercial broiler stock feeds. There are 3 types of broiler feeds which are given to the birds at different growth stages. These are Broiler Starter feeds, Broiler Grower feeds, and Broiler Finisher feeds. Water is also required to support efficient growth of the broiler chickens. You will also need a b roiler stress pack/vitamin supplements which  can be used to promote growth of commercial broilers and chicks, and also to combat stress during periods of high temperature, after vaccination and as an aid in recovery from disease to boost performance of the stock. All the feed costs should be included in your poultry farming business plan.

Health and Disease Management

Maintaining the health of your broiler flock is a paramount responsibility in your poultry farming business. A proactive and comprehensive health management program is crucial to prevent diseases and ensure the well-being of your birds. In some areas vaccinations maybe necessary to protect your broilers from common poultry diseases. Consult with a veterinarian to establish a vaccination schedule tailored to your specific location and the prevalent diseases in your region. Additionally, strict biosecurity measures must be in place to prevent the introduction and spread of diseases. This includes controlling access to your farm, disinfecting equipment and vehicles, and establishing quarantine areas for new birds. Regularly monitor the health of your flock through routine inspections, and be prepared to take immediate action if any signs of illness or distress are observed.

In the event of disease outbreaks, it’s crucial to have a contingency plan in place. Isolate infected birds to prevent the spread of disease and consult with a veterinarian to determine the appropriate treatment or culling measures. Timely and effective response is critical in minimizing the impact of disease on your broiler flock and, ultimately, your profitability. Regularly educate yourself and your farm staff on best practices in poultry health management, as staying informed about emerging diseases and treatment options is vital. By prioritizing the health of your broilers and implementing robust disease management strategies, you can reduce mortality rates, enhance the overall quality of your poultry products, and maintain a healthy and profitable broiler poultry farming business.

Management and Labour for Broiler Poultry Business

The number of farm workers you need will depend on the size of your poultry farming business project. If you are running a small poultry farm business e.g. 100 birds/cycle, you and your family may be enough to take care of the birds, but if you are rearing 2000 birds per cycle, you will need full time employees to manage the poultry farm.  There is need for good technical knowledge of broiler poultry farming rearing techniques for success in the business, and good management skills.

You can get a loan from the bank, or funding from investors, to use as capital to start your poultry farming business. Understanding your ideal customers will help you tailor your marketing efforts effectively. Once you’ve identified your audience, you can move on to product branding and packaging, creating a strong brand identity for your poultry products. Eye-catching packaging and branding can make your products stand out on the market shelves and attract consumer attention. Developing a competitive pricing strategy that reflects your production costs, market demand, and your product’s perceived value is essential. Consider offering promotions or discounts to attract initial customers.

Create a professional website and use social media platforms to showcase your products, share farm updates, and engage with potential customers. Invest in advertising and promotion to create awareness about your broiler poultry farm, utilizing both online and offline marketing channels. Building strong relationships with your customers, providing excellent customer service, and staying adaptable by monitoring market trends and consumer preferences are all key components of a successful marketing plan. By developing a comprehensive strategy that encompasses these elements, you can effectively promote your broiler poultry products, establish a strong brand presence, and attract a loyal customer base, ultimately contributing to the long-term success and sustainability of your broiler poultry farming business.

Keys to Profitability in Broiler Poultry Farming

Profitability in your broiler poultry farming business hinges on several crucial factors that span the entire production cycle. Efficient feed management is paramount, as feed expenses often represent a significant portion of your costs. To maximize profitability, invest in high-quality feed, closely monitor feed conversion rates, and avoid overfeeding to minimize waste. Maintaining the health of your broiler flock is equally essential. Implement a robust health management program that includes regular vaccinations, stringent biosecurity measures, and proactive monitoring to prevent diseases and reduce mortality rates. By keeping your broilers healthy, you can reduce the need for costly treatments and ensure steady growth.

The environment in which your broilers are raised plays a pivotal role in profitability. Adequate housing and ventilation are critical components of this equation. Your housing facilities should provide a comfortable environment with proper ventilation, temperature control, and insulation to minimize stress and promote optimal growth. Efficient staffing is also key to managing day-to-day operations effectively. Well-trained and knowledgeable staff can help reduce errors, improve productivity, and ensure the overall welfare of your broilers. Additionally, market timing is a critical consideration. Monitoring market trends and aligning your broiler sales with market demand can significantly impact your profitability. By optimizing the timing of your sales, you can secure higher selling prices and enhance your overall financial performance.

Another aspect of profitability involves resource management. Efficiently utilize resources like water and electricity to minimize waste and operational costs. Consider exploring renewable energy sources as a sustainable approach to resource management. Responsible scaling is essential as well. While expanding your broiler poultry farming business can lead to increased profits, it’s crucial to do so prudently, ensuring you have the necessary resources and market demand to support growth without straining your finances.

Advantages of Broiler Poultry Farming Business

Engaging in a broiler poultry farming business presents a range of compelling advantages that make it an enticing venture in the agricultural industry. Firstly, the rapid turnaround to profitability is a standout feature. Broilers are known for their efficient growth, reaching market weight in just 5 to 7 weeks. This means that farmers can realize a relatively fast return on investment compared to other livestock enterprises, making broiler farming an attractive option for those seeking quicker financial returns.

Furthermore, the steady and ever-increasing demand for poultry meat, especially chicken, is a significant driving force behind the success of broiler poultry farming. The affordability, versatility, and perceived health benefits of chicken contribute to a consistent and growing market. This ensures stability and reduces the risks associated with market fluctuations and seasonal variations, providing farmers with a reliable source of income.

Another advantage is the relatively low initial investment required to start a broiler poultry farm. Compared to some other livestock businesses, broiler farming demands less capital in terms of infrastructure and equipment. This accessibility enables individuals with limited financial resources to enter the poultry farming industry without significant financial barriers. Moreover, broilers’ remarkable feed conversion efficiency minimizes feed costs, contributing to overall profitability, as less feed is needed to produce a unit of meat compared to many other livestock species. These advantages make broiler poultry farming a compelling and potentially lucrative endeavor. However, it’s essential to approach this business with proper planning, management, and dedication to ensure long-term success and sustainability.

Minister Ebrahim Patel agreed with ITAC’s findings that several companies across Brazil, Denmark, Poland, Spain, and the US are dumping poultry products in South Africa, causing material harm to the domestic industry. The Minister also agreed with the remedial trade measures suggested by ITAC and the WTO: Anti-Dumping Duties. Poultry Farming In South Africa

Is poultry farming profitable in South Africa? : Generally, poultry farming comes with a high profit within a certain period if everything is done properly. Poultry products are always in high demand in South Africa. The poultry farming industry in SA is continuing to grow every year. This is a clear indication that poultry farming is a growing business that everyone can enter.

There are some important decisions you need to make before you start a broiler chicken farming business in South Africa. You also need to decide on the location of your broiler poultry farm and your target market. The size of the broiler poultry farming business will mainly depend on the capital amount you have, the size of the land, and your target market. Before starting a poultry farming business in South Africa, you must have a good plan for poultry farming. South Africa is competitive in the global poultry industry and produces the sixth cheapest chicken in the world. When raising chickens for egg production, they are called layers, and chickens raised for meat are called broilers.

In African countries, the size and mortality rate of a flock of native chickens varies. In South Africa, various studies have reported a herd size of 12.9 to 29.98 chickens per household, while mortality in domestic chickens, for example, Namibia is estimated at 42.2%, which is the highest mortality rate in South African countries. As far as the quality of their products is concerned, local chickens can lay 20 to 80 eggs a year, much less than commercial breeds that can lay 300 eggs a year. Nutritional deficiency and low genetic potential are factors that affect low egg production. Therefore, the genetic material must be improved to increase production efficiency. Overall, local poultry farming in South African countries is at an advanced stage. An example is Zambia, where only 0.5% of the total local poultry population reaches the commercial market.

You need to choose between two types: broiler and layers. Although you can go ahead and farm both broiler and layer. But as a beginner, you must build experience and skills before you expand. Successful poultry farms in South Africa are one of the following;

  • Meat production
  • Egg production
  • Incubating and raising chicks

Before choosing layer poultry for your poultry farming business, you need to keep some important information in mind. You need to choose the breeds that are suitable for your poultry farming business in South Africa and can give good yields in your area.

Read below to choose the right breeds for your business;

  • To produce commercial eggs, you need to choose the most productive laying hens.
  • Remember that not all hens lay the same number of eggs.
  • Selected breeds should have a good production capacity.
  • The selected poultry breed has the desired characteristics and this breed is suitable for your poultry farming business.
  • Always buy healthy chickens from a well-known and popular hatchery. You can check out their catalog before you buy.
  • Poultry houses must be away from residential and industrial areas.
  • It must have proper road facilities.
  • It should have some basic facilities like water and electricity.
  • Availability of farm labor at relatively cheap wages in the poultry business.
  • Poultry house must be located in a high area and water should not accumulate there.
  • It should have proper ventilation.

You need land for you will build poultry broiler housing. Land sustainability must be carefully considered in advance. The location must be highly strategic, close to major road networks, with reliable water supply, close to the market, and cheap labor. The land your business needs will depend on the scale of your broiler chicken farming business.

Your poultry breeds need adequate housing. You can use your existing infrastructure for a small-scale broiler poultry farming business. However, for a medium to large-scale commercial broiler poultry farming business, you need to build a broiler poultry housing specially designed for broilers. Broiler chickens are sensitive to fluctuations or extreme temperatures. This means that your broiler housing must ensure proper temperature and proper regulation for the birds.

The poultry house should have proper ventilation and lighting. Your monitoring devices are the real chickens themselves; a closer look will let you know if things are going well. When the temperature is too high, the chickens are hyper-ventilated, meaning their breathing rate is high, and you can see it in their breath as if they are panting for air. If the temperature is too low, they tend to crowd and squeeze in a corner or a place. Another consideration for housing is to avoid direct sunlight – you can achieve this by straightening your housing unit from east to west latitude.

The broiler chicken housing unit should also allow proper and free movement for each bird. Some of the key equipment required for the broiler poultry farming business includes feeders, drinkers, and lighting systems. Your broiler chicken farming business plan should take into account the cost of purchasing equipment and broiler housing. Poultry housing is not exactly a commodity, but it is essential for poultry production. There are different ways to make a poultry house or chicken cage and it can be a concrete house or a simple house. Whether it is a concrete or a simple house, it should have the necessary benefits for poultry birds. Poultry cages should have good ventilation and natural light management facilities.

There are several types of poultry housing systems in South Africa that you can consider. Typical poultry housing in South Africa is;

  • Deep litter system
  • Battery cage system
  • Free-range system

Which one you choose will depend on your financial strength. Battery cage systems are more expensive.

Different types of poultry breeds selection in South Africa

The popular chicken layers in South Africa can be included Lohmann Brown Layers and the Highline Breed.

There are different chicken breeds available in South Africa. To choose a poultry breed, farmers must consider how they will raise the birds, the target market, and personal preferences. Commercial breeds are usually a better option in intensive production systems, while dual-purpose or indigenous birds may be a better option in free-range or small-scale setups.

Multi-purposed indigenous chickens are ideal for free-range environments, especially rural communities. Venda, Ovambo, Naked Neck, Potchefstroom Koekoek, and Natal Game are some of the chicken breeds in South Africa. Some other European breeds are the New Hampshire, Rhode Island Red, and the Black Australorp. Breeds are used in a deep system for meat or egg production. Hi-Line or Lohmann is the best egg producer, while Ross and Cobb’s breeds are the most common for meat production.

Important chicken breeds in South Africa are;

Commercial chicken breeds are highly skilled, producing either too many eggs or too much meat, but not both. They are suitable for highly productive systems. Commercial layers are usually obtained from breeders when they are 18 weeks old. Most of the commercially available breeds today are made from the White Leghorn and the New Hampshire Cross, with Amberlink, Hyline, and Lohmann being the most widely used strains in South Africa. Each bird, depending on the line, is capable of laying six to seven eggs a week at 18 to 70 weeks of age. Although in some other countries the layers are kept longer and sometimes manipulated to get into the second round of egg production, most South African egg producers sell their layers when the birds are 70 weeks old. Firstly, because keeping birds for long periods is very expensive, and secondly, because there is a real estate market for live birds in South Africa.

Most commercially available broiler lines are made from White Plymouth Rock and Indian Game Crosses, with the widely used strains in South Africa being Ross, Cobb, Hubbard, Arbor Acres, and Hybro breed. Birds are usually acquired as day-old babies. Over the years, there has been great genetic progress in broiler birds. The new breeding strategy not only sees better production in terms of egg or meat production but also breeds more balanced and resilient birds.

Indigenous chickens are generally hardier and better suited to commercial breeds according to the climatic conditions of South Africa, making them better suited for free-range and small-scale production.

Boschveld chicken, Naked Necks, the Ovambo chicken, Potchefstroom Koekoeks, and Venda chicken are the popular chicken breeds in South Africa.

Boschveld chicken – This is a crossing of three indigenous breeds, namely, Venda, Ovambo, and Matebele. This breed is claimed to have captured the egg-laying ability of Venda, the size of Matabele, and the hardness of Ovambo. The chicken has a light reddish-brown color with white feathers in between that helps to camouflage and protect it from predators.

Naked Neck Chickens – Naked Neck Chickens are classified as an indigenous breed. Birds have different color patterns. According to the Poultry Club SA, there are two types of Naked necks, one is purebred and has a completely naked neck. Naked Necks are one of the best breeds out there for warm temperatures. They are incredibly efficient feeds.

Lohmann Brown Chicken Breed – Lohmann Brown chicken breed is raised specifically for egg-laying productivity. It is a cross-breed, selectively bred from New Hampshire and other brown egg-laying breeds. They lay in about 18 weeks and lay 300 eggs a year. Eggs are laid almost daily, usually in the morning or evening.

Ross broilers chicken breed – The world’s number one breed of poultry Ross broiler breed, purely a white hybrid, fast-growing chicken, raising meat and growing to a good weight day 1 to 43-45 days, to gain weight from 1.5 kg from 2.5 kg.

Free Range Chickens

Free-range eggs and poultry production in South Africa are key components of the country’s major poultry market. South Africa has no legislation on the labeling of organic or free-range poultry products. In the absence of legislation, the majority of retailers and supermarkets have developed their standards that require products to be labeled free-range or organic.

The South African Poultry Association has developed its standards for guiding broiler and layer production. All birds, whether raised in housing, cage, free-range, or organically, must have access to the five basic freedoms recognized by the World Animal Organization. These are;

  • Freedom from hunger, malnutrition, and thirst through the availability of fresh water and proper feed.
  • Freedom from fear and suffering by providing conditions and care that avoid unnecessary suffering.
  • Freedom from abnormal discomfort.
  • Freedom from pain, injury, and disease through the provision of appropriate prevention and treatment of normal pathological conditions.
  • By providing freedom of expression, appropriate facilities, and proper placement of animals with their nature.

Internal environment – To qualify for the free range for broilers, the Broiler Production Code of Practice specifies that no more than fifteen birds per square meter can be kept in a poultry shed or housing. This number drops to ten hens per square meter if it aims to produce free-range eggs, including the collection of eggs or the area occupied by the service area and the adjoining part of the nests. Layers can increase the storage density of chickens up to 12 birds per square meter in homes with adequate perching or roosting facilities. However, such perches should not be less than 15 cm per hen and should add a gap of less than 1.5 cm on both sides to allow the hens to catch without injuring their claws.

Proper nesting facilities should be provided to discourage layering on the floor. Where individual boxes are used, there should be at least one nest for every eight hens, and where communal nests are provided, at least one hen per square meter of nesting floor per 125 hens.

The layers must have access to adequate light: in the case of daylight or artificial light, at least nine hours of continuous light, 24 hours each, and at least eight hours of darkness. With both broiler and layer production, a maximum of one adult chicken per five cm of feeder length can be kept if chain, trough, or box feeders are used which can be obtained from both sides. Ten centimeters per hen should be provided if there is only one side access. If pan or tube feeders are used, a maximum of 40 adult hens per feeder can be used.

External environment – The codes specify the same external environmental conditions for free-range broiler and layer production: the storage rate of birds outside the house or shed, should not exceed five hens per square meter. According to the South African Poultry Association, livestock theft restricts the supply of extensive ranges. The outside area where the birds are kept should be maintained so that at least 50% of the living vegetation is allowed at all times. Rotational grazing will help manage damaged land and reduce the risk of parasites building up. Birds must have access to shade, either in the form of trees or artificial structures, at the rate of four square meters of shade per thousand birds. Birds should also have access to the cover and a fence should be adequate to protect them from predators.

No chemical or antibiotic products are allowed with organic production. Farmers use independent organizations to certify their products as organic. Each of these organizations has its own production needs. In general, though, without the use of antibiotics, chemical fertilizers, or pesticides, production should only qualify as organic.

Managing chicken’s health in your poultry business means the following;

  • Vaccinate them on time
  • Provide fresh food
  • Provide fresh water
  • Clean their poultry house from time to time

Depending on the size of the farm, poultry farming can be the main source of income for the family or provide income and lucrative employment to smallholder farmers throughout the year. Poultry manure is more expensive and can be used to increase the yield of all crops. The disease is a major factor in poultry farming which has a severe impact on the farming economy. Birds suffer from diseases, many of which are highly contagious. Therefore, it is advisable to take extreme precautions to prevent and control the disease.

To keep your birds healthy, follow these guidelines;

Choose the right chicken breeds – In South Africa, it is easy to buy live breeds. Day-old chicks, especially males, are also cheaper. But none of them are suitable for backyard conditions. Instead, buy chickens from your neighbors.

Put clean water into the right containers – Water containers for chicken breeds are cheap. You can use a large flat container. Remember to change the water every day because many poultry diseases are caused by dirty water.

A safe enclosure – Chickens can wander the fields during the day, they have a safe place to sleep at night. And, you can easily make a chicken hutch from wooden poles and chicken wire, from corrugated iron. Make it slightly sloping on the ground and dig a ditch around it so that it doesn’t flood when it rains. After that, put perches or branches inside for the chickens to roost on, as they get sick if forced to sleep on the ground. Providing perches and clearing long grass around bushes and hatches also protects poultry from rats and snakes. As you have to keep the chickens in the hutch at night and leave them outside in the morning, you will check twice a day that they are healthy.

Breeding and hatching – If you want chickens, you will need one for every five to six hens. Remove or slaughter other male birds as they mature to prevent noise and fighting. The hens start hatching in about six to eight months. If you collect eggs every day, they will continue to laying. If you leave the eggs in the nest, the hens will broody and want to hatch the eggs. If you want to raise chickens, choose about six clean eggs for a broody hen.

Veld grass or straw are ideal for nests, but they need to be changed enough to avoid the accumulation of red mites. Hens laying eggs need water and food. Baby chickens should be kept in the pen with the chicken for the first two to three weeks after hatching.

Vaccinate and prevent the disease – Newcastle disease is a virus that is deadly to unvaccinated chickens. Although commercial birds are vaccinated automatically, this is not always the case in backyard flocks. Vaccines are available that can be injected into the eyes of young chickens, used as a spray-on for birds in cages, or mixed with drinking water. Buy them with your local support. Complete instruction manuals or labels are included.

Check the chickens daily – Perhaps the best way to keep your chickens healthy is to keep an eye on them and react immediately if something goes wrong.

South Africa’s poultry industry has growth opportunities for small-scale farmers, but you need at least R20,000 to 50,000 to start a profitable poultry business.

South Africa’s poultry industry has growth potential, and the Department of Agriculture, Land Reform, and Rural Development has appealed to young people to benefit. You can spend an average of R20,000 to 50,000 to start a chicken farm, depending on the size of your business. It costs between R38 and R40 to raise day-old baby chicken, and for 100-day-old chickens costs between R850 and R950.

Poultry feeds and water is essential for meat production, disease resistance, and growth. To maximize profits in the commercial broiler chicken farming business, you must reduce costs, reduce mortality, and improve the target weight of broilers. You should give broiler feed to your chickens. There are many stocks feed companies in South Africa that sell broiler chicken feeds.

Broiler chicken feeds are formulated to provide all the nutrients needed for the healthy and efficient development of chickens. There are 3 types of broiler feeds that you should give to your birds according to their stage of development. Make sure you give your broilers adequate food and water. The cost of broiler feeds should be considered in your broiler production business plan.

Feeding for layer poultry farming: There are many companies available around the world that are developing commercial feeds and feed supplements for layer chickens. You can buy feed from your local market or make feed at home. You need to make sure that the feed and feed supplements you buy are rich in essential nutrients.

Protein, vitamins, and minerals are very important for laying hens which are affecting the quality of eggs, the fertility of layer poultry, and the health of layer birds.

Provide 2% calcium for two weeks after birth. If you find that they are not gaining the expected weight, you will need to offer a starter feed for eight weeks. Feed them two or three times a day until they are 18 weeks old. Do not reduce the amount of feed when laying (even if the weight increases).

The vaccination program is necessary to keep chickens free from all kinds of diseases. The main benefits of poultry vaccination are listed below;

  • Timely vaccination makes disease resistance power in the body of chickens.
  • Disease prevalence will be less.
  • The spread of diseases in poultry breeds will be reduced.
  • Mortality rates will decrease.
  • And low mortality rate = higher yields = higher profits.

There are several types of poultry vaccines available for layer hens. Marex, Ranikheth, Gamboro, Bruchaities, Bosonto, and Salmonela, etc., are used for layer chickens.

Before vaccinating layer poultry

Before vaccination you have to follow some rules;

  • Hold the chickens very carefully.
  • Vaccinate chickens without any strain.
  • Sick chickens do not need to be vaccinated.
  • Wash vaccination equipment with warm boiled water or Viraclean.
  • Vaccinate in cold weather.
  • For healthy poultry birds, the protective vaccine is applied, and never vaccinate an infected bird.

Demand for poultry is very high in South Africa, exceeding 2 million tons per year. South Africa does not produce enough broiler meat to meet its demand, the shortage of which is mainly imported from Brazil. In South Africa, chicken is the most widely consumed meat. Chicken Farming Business Plan South Africa

Chicken Farming Business Plan South Africa – In this article (they farming South Africa) have put together two simple chicken business plans for both small scale farmers and intensive or larger scale poultry farming. A small scale business plan will guide you how to farm with chickens and a more advanced plan feature points that you can present to the Bank for a loan or Government Funding

Breakdown of a Backyard or Small Scale Chicken Farming Business Plan

  • Housing Cost
  • Bedding Cost
  • Feed and Water Cost

Health and Treatment Cost

Marketing and Marketing Cost

We will look at the basics and profitability of small scale farming.

But let me explain why you need a business plan. A business plan is a written tool about your business that projects 3-5 years ahead and outlines the path your business intends to take to make money and grow revenue. Think of it as a living project for your business, and not as a one-time document. Break it down into mini-plans – one for sales and marketing, one for pricing, one for operations, and so on.

A good business plan guides you through each stage of starting and managing your business. You’ll use your business plan for how to structure, run, and grow your new business. It’s a way to think through and detail all the key elements of how your business will run.

Setup and Cost

You need to determine how many chickens you can operate with. When building your coop you need to construct the building to easy extent it if needed as your business grow. Housing should be protected from strong winds and must be waterproofed.

Day old chicks are not cold tolerant and you can lose your stock if they are not protected against bad weather. Make sure that your coops are also protected against rodents and do not store feed in your coops.  Planning the cost of your housing carefully will save you money as you will not buy unnecessary material and pay extra wages to redesign your housing if errors were made.

Plan your bedding well before the chicks arrive. You can get bedding at your closest sawmill or at pet stores or even make wood shavings yourself. Bedding is a nominal cost and you will need to maintain it as long as you have chickens.

Bedding is not expensive and can be resold as manure after your farming cycle. Bedding can be bought in bulk and stored in a dry place which are rodent free.

Feed and Water

Watering Systems are expensive and need to be planned carefully. You need to get the right amount of bell drinkers or water holders and raise them as the chickens grow.

You will need 3 types of feeds for broilers in the form of starter feed, grower and finisher. You will find a breakdown of feeding methods on our website. Planing your feed is crucial and having too many chicks at the startup of your business you don’t want to run out of cash to buy feed for the chickens.

Work out how much starter, grower and finisher you are going to need. You can use this Feeding Calculator for Layer and Broiler Chickens

You need to plan for chickens getting sick. Talk to your state vet before starting your business. Virukill is a must for any chicken farmer to disinfect their coops floors and walls. You can also use it to wash their drinkers and feeders.

Marketing is an essential part of your business. Plan ahead on how to market your business. Advertising in news papers or on social media is a good way to create public awareness and almost guaranteed to bring clients to you. There are many free methods of marketing but it is time consuming and not always an effective strategy to market your business.

Wages: You have to decide how much help you are going to need and budget for wages. Chickens take time to return your investment and running out of cash means that you are going to run out of workers.

Sales:  Selling your products are not always easy. We have put together a paragraph on how to sell your chickens and eggs.

Rainbow Chicken finally lists on the JSE after tough few years

Published Jun 27, 2024

ONE of South Africa’s best-known chicken producers, Rainbow Chicken, listed on the JSE Main Board yesterday through an unbundling from its parent RCL Foods.

The listing, the second in two days for the bourse, followed RCL announcing its decision to list Rainbow in March. Rainbow’s 890.3 million shares were untraded at R4 each yesterday, and will begin trading from July 1 this year.

The JSE has been struggling to attract new listings recently after only three companies listed last year. Although it predicted possibly up to 10 new listings this year, so far Rainbow is only the second after Cilo Cybin listed on the AltX board yesterday.

Smalltalkdaily Research market analyst Anthony Clark said the listing of South Africa’s second-largest poultry company had been “the talk of the henhouse for years”.

The South African poultry industry has been through a very challenging couple of years due to an environment of failing municipalities, power cuts issues, rising imports, higher feed prices, and outbreaks of avian influenza, lower sales volumes and an inability to pass on price increases, among other challenges.

Clark said based on the current landscape for the poultry sector, he would rather wait until the second half of 2024 to decide to invest in Rainbow, “if domestic poultry prices and input costs start to act in a manner to benefit the sector”.

“There is no JSE listing pot of gold at the end of this Rainbow, but the company is certainly not a crock. Rainbow is a stock I’d want to own at a point in time, just not currently,” he said in a note yesterday.

He said under the direction of CEO Marthinus Stander, much had improved at the poultry stock. “It needed a good sort-out on the farming side. If you don’t get farming right, nothing else matters. Now Rainbow is a far spritelier bird,” said Clark.

VS Research equity analyst Vikhya Sharma predicted in a research report that after a challenging few years, high earnings were expected at Rainbow as the operating margin improved, on the back of slightly higher chicken volume growth, improved chicken-rearing performance, and lower load shedding and disease costs in the near-term.

Key risks included failure of the turnaround plan, volatility in commodity prices leading to cost pressures, load shedding costs, disease risk and collapse in consumer spending leading to downtrading to cheaper protein sources.

According to Rainbow’s pre-listing statement, for the six months to December 31, 2023, it generated an earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (Ebitda) of R265.4 million, a growth of about 590% compared to the prior full financial year.

It reported an overall R12.99m first-half profit off revenue of R7.25 billion, with the profit a turnaround from the R286.02m loss for the 2023 year.

RCL has over the past three years moved to improve operational resilience at Rainbow through targeted interventions across farming and manufacturing processes.

Rainbow’s unbundling will be implemented through a distribution of 890 296 405 ordinary shares, in the ratio of one Rainbow Chicken share for every one RCL Foods share held – with shares set to start trading from 1 July.

Rainbow Chicken was originally founded in 1960 as a small family-owned business. Today, it is a fully integrated broiler producer and functions at all stages of chicken production, from farm to fork. Its fully integrated business model incorporates all stages of chicken production.

It controls and operates 165 farms, 1 288 houses, eight hatcheries, three primary processing plants, two further processing plants dedicated to added-value chicken products, six animal feed mills, and it holds a 50% shareholding in a joint venture (Matzonox), which operates two waste-to-value plants.

Its primary retail brands include Rainbow, Rainbow Simply Chicken, and Farmer Brown, while food service brands are FlavourBurst and Rainbow Ready2Go, all of which cater to a wide array of consumer needs and preferences.

It is also South Africa’s second-largest feed company through its brands Epol and Driehoek Feeds.

Rainbow CEO Marthinus Stander said: “Stepping out as a standalone entity marks a significant milestone for Rainbow, carving out a unique and competitive position in the market. We aim to re-establish and rebuild our chicken and feed businesses as best-in-class in terms of customer-centricity, delivering value via innovation and leveraging our heritage.”

JSE Capital Markets director Valdene Reddy said they were thrilled to welcome Rainbow Chicken to the JSE as an organisation seeking new growth avenues for the business, and that the company had selected the JSE as a preferred venue to unlock value.

“We’ve already seen several listings in recent years where an entity has chosen to unbundle, usually to find new direct access to equity markets and supporting firms as they expand.

“Similarly, we know that Rainbow Chicken’s decision to list as its own entity is a testament to the JSE’s ability to provide issuers with access to liquidity and capital on our exchange,” said Reddy.

Clark said there was “much to like at Rainbow”. Its product and business mix with a large focus on food service and an interesting value-added side had expansionary potential. The business was also listing with a clean balance sheet care of RCL Foods and was in better shape to stand up to market rigours.

Chicken Farming: How much money do you really need to start a chicken business in South Africa

The amount of money needed to start a chicken business in South Africa can vary depending on various factors such as the scale of the operation, the type of chicken business (e.g., egg production, broiler production), infrastructure requirements, equipment costs, and other considerations. It’s important to conduct a detailed feasibility study and business plan to estimate the specific costs for your desired operation.

However,we can provide you with a general idea of the costs involved in starting a small-scale chicken business in South Africa. Please note that these figures are approximate and can vary significantly:

Poultry House and Equipment : The cost of constructing a poultry house can range from ZAR 1,000 to ZAR 2,000 per square meter, depending on the quality of materials and construction. The equipment required, such as feeders, drinkers, lighting, ventilation, and heating systems, can cost several thousand rands, depending on the size of the operation.

Chickens : The cost of purchasing day-old chicks can vary depending on the breed and quantity required. Broiler chicks can cost around ZAR 6 to ZAR 12 per chick, while layer chicks (for egg production) can range from ZAR 15 to ZAR 30 per chick.

Feed : Feed is a significant expense in poultry farming. The cost of feed depends on the type of feed (starter, grower, layer, etc.), the brand, and the market prices. On average, feed costs can range from ZAR 30 to ZAR 100 per bird, depending on the production cycle and if it is a layer or broiler

Labour : Labour costs will depend on the size of the operation and whether you plan to hire employees or manage the business yourself. You need to factor in wages, benefits, and any required training.

Licensing and Permits : There may be costs associated with obtaining the necessary licenses and permits for operating a chicken business, such as registration with the Department of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries. The fees for licenses and permits can vary.

Miscellaneous Costs : Other expenses may include veterinary services, medications, marketing, transportation, packaging materials, and administrative expenses.

It’s important to consult with industry experts, such as agricultural extension officers or poultry consultants, to get more accurate cost estimates based on your specific business plan and location. Additionally, local market conditions and competition can influence the overall expenses and potential profitability of your chicken business.

Poultry House and Equipment

The cost of poultry housing and equipment can vary depending on the size and specifications of your chicken business. Here are some general estimates for poultry house and equipment costs in South Africa:

Poultry House Construction : The cost of constructing a poultry house will depend on factors such as the size, design, materials used, and location. On average, the construction cost can range from ZAR 1,000 to ZAR 2,000 per square meter. This estimate includes the cost of building materials, labor, flooring, roofing, and insulation.

Ventilation System : Good ventilation is essential for the health and productivity of the chickens. Depending on the size of the poultry house, a ventilation system can cost anywhere from ZAR 10,000 to ZAR 30,000 or more. This includes fans, air inlets, exhaust fans, and controllers.

Lighting System : Proper lighting is crucial for chicken growth and egg production. The cost of a lighting system, including fixtures, bulbs, and timers, can range from ZAR 5,000 to ZAR 15,000 or more, depending on the size of the operation.

Feeding and Watering Equipment : Feeders and drinkers are necessary for efficient feeding and watering of the chickens. The cost of feeders and drinkers will depend on the type, size, and quality. As a rough estimate, budget around ZAR 15 per chicken for feeding and watering equipment.

Heating System : If you are operating in a colder region or during winter, you may need a heating system to maintain optimal temperatures in the poultry house. The cost of heating equipment such as heaters or brooders can vary depending on the size of the operation and the heating requirements.

Egg Collection System (for egg production) : If you are planning an egg production business, you will need an egg collection system that includes nests, conveyors, and storage facilities. The cost of an egg collection system will depend on the size of the operation and the level of automation desired.

Cost per Chicken

The cost of purchasing chickens for your poultry business in South Africa will depend on several factors, including the type of chickens (broilers or layers), the breed, the age of the birds, and the quantity you intend to purchase. Here are some general estimates for chicken costs:

Broiler Chickens : Broilers are raised for meat production. The cost of day-old broiler chicks can range from ZAR 6 to ZAR 12 per chick. As the chicks grow, their price will increase based on their age and weight. Typically, broilers are sold in batches, and the price per bird may vary depending on the quantity purchased.

Layer Chickens : Layers are raised for egg production. The cost of day-old layer chicks can range from ZAR 15 to ZAR 30 per chick. Similar to broilers, the price may vary based on the breed and the quantity of chicks purchased.

Point-of-Lay Pullets : If you don’t want to raise chicks from day-old, you can consider purchasing point-of-lay pullets, which are young hens that are close to the laying age. Point-of-lay pullets can be more expensive than day-old chicks but can save you time and effort in raising them. The cost of point-of-lay pullets can range from ZAR 80 to ZAR 100 per bird, depending on the breed and the age of the pullets.

Feeding Cost

The cost of feed is a significant expense in poultry farming. The exact cost of feed will depend on various factors such as the type of feed, the brand, the quality, and the quantity you require. Here are some general estimates for feed costs in South Africa:

Starter Feed : Starter feed is typically used for young chicks during their initial growth phase. The cost of starter feed can range from ZAR 300 to ZAR 400 per 50 kg bag, depending on the brand and quality.

Grower Feed : Grower feed is given to chickens as they continue to grow but are not yet at the laying or meat production stage. The cost of grower feed is similar to starter feed, ranging from ZAR 350 to ZAR 400 per 50 kg bag.

Layer Feed : Layer feed is specifically formulated for hens that are in the egg-laying phase. The cost of layer feed can range from ZAR 300 to ZAR 450 per 50 kg bag, depending on the brand and quality. Layer feed often contains higher levels of calcium to support eggshell formation.

Broiler Feed : Broiler feed is formulated to promote rapid growth and efficient meat production in broiler chickens. The cost of broiler feed is comparable to grower feed and can range from ZAR 350 to ZAR 400 per 50 kg bag.

Labour and Wages

The cost of labour in your poultry business will depend on the size and complexity of your operation, as well as the number of employees you plan to hire. Here are some considerations regarding labor costs in South Africa: Keep in mind that the minimum wage in South Africa is currently R25.42 per hour.

Farm Manager/Supervisor : If you have a larger-scale poultry business, you may need to hire a farm manager or supervisor to oversee daily operations, including managing the flock, coordinating tasks, and ensuring proper protocols are followed. The salary for a farm manager or supervisor can vary widely depending on qualifications and experience. It’s important to research industry standards and consult with local labor experts to determine appropriate compensation.

Farm Workers : Farm workers are responsible for various tasks such as feeding the chickens, cleaning the poultry houses, collecting eggs (if applicable), maintaining equipment, and general farm maintenance. The number of farm workers required will depend on the size of your operation and the level of automation you have in place. Farm worker wages can vary depending on the region, but as a rough estimate, minimum wages in South Africa for agricultural workers range from around ZAR 20 to ZAR 30 per hour.

Skilled labour : Depending on the complexity of your poultry operation, you may require skilled labor for tasks such as equipment maintenance, electrical work, plumbing, and other specialized tasks. Skilled labor costs will depend on the qualifications and expertise required for the specific roles.

Seasonal Workers: In some cases, additional labor may be needed during peak periods, such as during the harvesting of broiler chickens or egg collection for layer hens. Seasonal workers may be hired on a temporary basis or contracted through a labor agency. The cost of seasonal workers will depend on the duration of their employment and prevailing labor rates.

How much money do you really need to start a chicken business in South Africa

It’s important to consider labour laws and regulations in South Africa, including minimum wage requirements, employment contracts, and any applicable benefits. It’s advisable to consult with labor specialists or industry associations to ensure compliance with labor regulations and to obtain more accurate cost estimates based on your specific location and requirements.
