Overall, these 3-digit by 1-digit Division workshees provide a comprehensive and engaging way for students to develop their skills and confidence in dividing three-digit numbers by one-digit numbers. With these worksheets, students can build a solid foundation in math and develop the skills they need to succeed in higher-level math courses.

How to Perform This Math Skill

Dividing a 3-digit number by a 1-digit number is a straightforward process when using long division. Here’s a step-by-step guide that teachers can share with their students:

  • Write the Problem – Write the 3-digit number (the dividend) under a long division symbol and the 1-digit number (the divisor) outside the symbol, to the left of the dividend.
  • Divide the First Digit – Check if the divisor can be divided into the first digit of the dividend. If it can, write the result (quotient) above the first digit. If it cannot, move to step 3.
  • Divide the First Two Digits – If the divisor cannot be divided into the first digit, check if it can be divided into the first two digits of the dividend. Write the result above the second digit.
  • Multiply and Subtract – Multiply the divisor by the first digit of the quotient and write the product below the dividend, aligned with the first two digits. Subtract this product from the first two digits of the dividend, and write the difference below.
  • Bring Down the Next Digit – Bring down the third digit of the dividend and write it to the right of the difference from the previous step.
  • Divide Again – Divide the divisor into the new number you created in step 5, and write the result above the third digit of the dividend.
  • Multiply and Subtract Again – Multiply the divisor by the second digit of the quotient and write the product below the new number from step 5. Subtract this product, and write the difference below.
  • Check for a Remainder – If the difference in step 7 is zero, then the division is complete. If there’s a non-zero difference, this is the remainder. Write the remainder next to the quotient with an “R” or as a fraction (remainder over divisor).

Example: Let’s divide 345 by 5.

Step 1: Setup Problem

345 is the dividend (gets set within the bracket). 5 is the divisor (gets set outside the bracket).

division worksheets 3 digit by 1 digit

Step 2: Divide into the first digit (Left)

In this case 5 cannot be divided into 3. We will therefore divide into the first two digits. 5 will be divided into 34. This gives us 6 (the start of our quotient), we place that up top and drop the remainder (4).

division worksheets 3 digit by 1 digit

Step 3: We then divide 5 into the entire remainder (45)

The quotient is therefore 69.

Division Learning

Division is often a process which kids often find quite difficult and hard to learn. Kids need to learn what division is before they start formal work on dividing numbers.

Sharing things out, such as counters, between pretend people or cuddly toys is a great way to start your child on their division journey so that they have a basic understanding of what division is. Putting counters into same-size groups is also another way to reinforce division as a model for both sharing and grouping.

When your child is confident with sharing and they have a good understanding of division, they can start learning their division facts and the long division method.

Once they have mastered long division dividing numbers by a single digit, they can start dividing numbers by 2 digits, and begin to learn to divide decimal numbers.

Dividing 3-Digit by 1-Digit Number

Dividing 3-Digit by 1-Digit Numbers are discussed here step-by-step.

How to divide 3-digit numbers by single-digit numbers?

Let us follow the examples to learn to divide 3-digit number by one-digit number.

I: Dividing 3-digit Number by 1-Digit Number without Remainder:

1. Divide 248 by 2 and verify the result.

Solution:

We proceed as follows:

Step I: Arrange the two given numbers as shown.

Divide 3-Digit by 1-Digit Number

Step II: Divide 2 hundreds by 2.

Start by looking at the first number (hundreds place) in the dividend.

Find a number in the table of 2 less than or equal to 2

We know 2 × 1 = 2.

So, 1 is the required number.

2 × 1 = 2, write 1 in hundreds place of the quotient and 2 below 2.

Subtract the number you got by multiplying the divisor, from the number in the dividend.

Subtract 2 from 2

2 - 2 = 0

Step III: Divide 4 tens by 2.

Bring down the next digit, from the number in the dividend.

We have 4 there; now find a number in the table of 2 that divides it.

2 × 1 = 2

2 × 2 = 4

So, 2 is the required number.

2 × 2 = 4, write 2 in tens place of the quotient and 4 below 4.

Subtract the number you got by multiplying the divisor, from the number in the dividend.

Subtract 4 from 4

Step IV: Divide 8 ones by 2.

Bring down 8 Now see where does 8 come in the table of 2.

2 ×  3 = 6

White 4 in the quotient and 8 under 8 and subtract.

Dividing 3-Digit by 1-Digit Number

Therefore, 248 ÷ 2 = 124

II: Dividing a 3-digit Number by a 1-Digit Number with Remainder: (Long Division)

Let us follow the examples to learn to divide 3-digit numbers by one-digit number with remainder.

1. Divide the following and verify the result: Long Division

Divide 3-Digit by 1-Digit Number

Step II: Divide 6 hundreds by 4.

Start by looking at the first number (hundreds place) in the dividend.

Find a number in the table of 4 less than or equal to 6

We know 4 × 1 = 4.

So, 1 is the required number.

4 × 1 = 4, write 1 in hundreds place of the quotient and 4 below 6.

Subtract the number you got by multiplying the divisor, from the number in the dividend.

Subtract 4 from 6

6 - 4 = 2

Step III:

Subtract 20 from 22

22 - 20 = 2

Step IV: Bring down 5

So, 6 is the required number.

4 × 6 = 24, write 6 in ones place of the quotient and 24 below 25.

Subtract 24 from 25

25 - 24 = 1.

Dividing 3-Digit by 1-Digit Number

Therefore, the quotient = 156 and remainder = 1.

Check: Dividend = Quotient × Divisor - Remainder

                         = 156 × 4 + 1

                         = 624 + 1

                         = 625 = Dividend

Division of Two-Digit by a One-Digit

107 × 6 = 642

642 + 3 = 645 Here we know, 645 ÷ 6 = 107 remainder is 3

645 is dividend

6 is divisor

107 is quotient

3 is remainder

The same method is used when dividing larger numbers.

Division Activity

Objective: Dividing a 3-digit number by 9 using short cut method.

Materials Required: Pen and paper only.

Procedure/Demonstration: We can divide any 3-digit number by 9 quickly.

Type 1: When the sum of the digits is less than 9.

In this case, the quotient is obtained by adding the number formed by hundreds and tens digits to the hundreds digit. The sum of the three digits gives the remainder.

213 ÷  9, gives quotient = 21 + 2 = 23 and remainder = 2 + 1 + 3 = 6

Type 2: When the sum of the digits is greater than or equal of 9 but less than 18.

Here, we first add the number formed by hundreds and tens digits to the hundreds digit. 1 more than this sum is the quotient. To get the remainder, subtract 9 from the sum of the digits.

537 ÷  9 gives quotient = 53 + 5 + 1 = 59 and

remainder = (9 + 8 + 7) - 9 = 15 - 9 = 6
