How do I compare NBN business plans?

What are the main features of a business internet plan, what is the best nbn speed for your business, nbn 50 - best for sole traders, nbn 100 - best for small business, nbn 250 - best for small businesses with heavy usage, nbn 1000 - best for large teams, business mobile broadband plans, who are the business nbn providers in australia, frequently asked questions.

Why compare internet plans with Finder?

We don't charge extra. Prices shown on Finder are the same as those you get directly from internet providers.

We compare almost every major internet provider in Australia, all in one place.

Our team is dedicated to monitoring internet plan prices and keeping deals updated daily.

There are 2 main things to consider when comparing NBN business plans:

speedometer

  • Good to know: To sign up for a business NBN plan, you'll just need a valid Australian Business Number (ABN).

Business internet plan features vary by provider, but in general, you can find the following features:

Normally, you get a new IP address every time you connect to the network, but a static IP stays the same. Most providers include it for free on business internet plans.

  • Why this matters: Static IPs are vital for hosting a website internally or if you have workers accessing your network remotely (via VPN and so on).

Extra support and priority

Business plans usually include extra support in the form of a 24/7 call line or dedicated account manager.

  • Why this matters: Support for residential plans can leave you in a call queue for ages. Priority support means your problem can be solved faster so you can get back online and back to business quicker.

Enhanced Service Level Agreement (eSLA)

Providers with eSLAs purchase extra support from NBN Co itself and pass that extra service on to you.

eSLAs specify a time frame and method for problems to be resolved as well as what happens if your service falls short. Residential plans don't have these.

  • Why this matters: eSLAs help ensure your business will be back up and running quickly after a problem.

You'll have different speed requirements depending on the size of your company and how much you'll be using the internet.

Where a regular Australian can get away with using NBN 50 for personal use, small businesses may prefer to use NBN 100 to ensure they're getting fast enough speeds.

1 person icon

  • Maximum download speeds : 50Mbps
  • Maximum upload speeds : 20Mbps
  • Team size : 1 person

According to the ACCC, the NBN 50 speed tier is the most popular in Australia for personal use. Its download speeds are fast enough to handle video conferencing and with enough upload speed to use cloud storage like Google Drive or Dropbox without too much hassle.

briefcase icon

  • Maximum download speeds : 100Mbps
  • Maximum upload speeds : 40Mbps
  • Team size : 3–5 people

The NBN 100 speed tier is typically a great fit for families of 4+ people and that extends to small business users.

However, if your business requires regular video conferencing or uploads a lot of data, pay attention to upload speeds when comparing plans. NBN 100 plans can come with either 20Mbps or 40Mbps upload speeds.

A NBN 100/40 plan may cost you a bit more, but can come in very handy if multiple people are in Zoom meetings at the same time.

business icon

  • Maximum download speeds : 250Mbps
  • Maximum upload speeds : 25Mbps
  • Team size : 5–7 people

More people means less bandwidth to share. On a 250Mbps plan, you should be able to download large files simultaneously and have no issues with video conferencing.

The only limiting factor is your connection type. Your business will need to be connected to the NBN via FTTP or HFC , which is not the case in all parts of Australia.

building

  • Maximum download speeds : 1000Mbps
  • Maximum upload speeds : 50Mbps
  • Team size : 25–30

NBN 1000 is the fastest NBN speed you can get in Australia, but it is also limited to businesses with either an FTTP or some HFC connections.

On an NBN 1000 plan, large teams of up to 30 people should be able to collaborate, download and upload files without any problems.

Keep in mind:

  • Some providers like Aussie Broadband offer plans with customised speeds that sit outside of the regular speed tiers. For example, Aussie's Pro NBN plan has maximum download speeds of 500Mbps and maximum upload speeds of 200Mbps.
  • If your company has more than 30 employees, it may be best to contact your provider about an NBN enterprise plan.

A business mobile broadband plan could be the right fit for sole traders, remote workers or anyone who needs to be able to access the internet on the go in different settings.

The following are some of the benefits of a business mobile broadband plan compared to an NBN plan:

  • 5G access. 5G may be able to provide speeds faster than what you can get via NBN.
  • Portability. Because it's not a fixed connection, you could run your business from the beach, cafe or remote site. Plus a variety of modems will fit in your pocket or work bag.
  • Data sharing. Compared to a residential mobile broadband plan, some providers offer data sharing for businesses. This means you can share your data with other members of the team.

But there are also a few cons:

  • Limited 5G network. 5G is still being rolled out and isn't as widely available as 4G. It works best in major cities.
  • Less data. Some mobile broadband plans come with less data than an NBN plan and for a higher price.
  • Device repayments. While not overly expensive month-to-month, the device repayment for a mobile broadband modem can be an additional cost to pay over a 12-, 24- or 36-month repayment period.

  • Dedicated NBN connection manager. When you sign up with Telstra, you'll have a connection manager to work with for a pre-connection assessment, updates on your order and a post-connection check-in.
  • Included calls. You get unlimited calls to standard landlines and mobiles in Australia.
  • 24/7 NBN Business tech support. It's what it says on the tin - Telstra has tech support available at all hours of the day for its business plans, as well as assistance in the My Telstra app.

Aussie Broadband business internet plans

  • Silver. 99% uptime guarantee, 8-hour response time eSLA and 24/7 Australian support.
  • Gold. 99.95% uptime guarantee, 4-hour response time eSLA and 24/7 Australian support.

In terms of the base plan prices, its NBN 25 and 50 plans are cheaper than the average on Finder, while its NBN 100 plan is in line with the average. Its NBN 250 plan is $50 more expensive than the average business plan on Finder, but you do get a higher upload speed than most NBN 250 plans. It is one of only 2 providers to offer a 500Mbps typical business hours speed, which might help if you require more speed than NBN 250, but don't need NBN 1000, especially as that latter plan is just over $200 a month more expensive than the average. Keep in mind though Aussie Broadband's NBN 1000 business plan offers the highest average upload speed of all providers (around 8 times faster), so this is something to consider if very fast upload speeds are required for your business.

How much does business nbn cost.

Business NBN plans on Finder start from $59 per month but can go all the way up to over $400 per month, depending on what speed you're after.

Business NBN plans tend to be more expensive than residential plans. The difference is less notable on the lower speed tiers from NBN 12 to 100, with the average business plans being $6–$13 more expensive. On an NBN 250 or 1000 plan, the difference is much greater being between about $35–$70 more expensive on average.

Note: Differences are based on the average cost of residential and business plans we compare on Finder.

Can I get a business internet plan for my home?

Yes, if you have your own business and you work from home, you can sign up for a business NBN plan. You'll just need to provide your ABN.

Are NBN business plans faster than residential plans?

Technically, no. NBN business plans offer the same speed and performance as residential NBN plans. On a network level, everything is the same – NBN Co doesn't distinguish between the two.

However, typical download speeds could be faster on business internet plans than on residential plans but this varies by provider.

The main difference is that retailers offer business NBN customers extra features like a static IP and priority service and service guarantees they don't offer to residential customers.

What is the difference between a business NBN plan and a business NBN enterprise Ethernet plan?

An NBN enterprise Ethernet plan is designed for larger businesses or those that require up to 1000Mbps upload and download speeds. A business NBN plan, on the other hand, is much more like a residential NBN plan in terms of speed tiers and performance, but with extra features and support.

How fast is business NBN fibre?

It depends on what speed business NBN plan you choose as to how fast it is, but you can achieve up to 1000Mbps download speeds.

How to choose an nbn plan for your business internet

nbn plans for small business

The internet is critical for nearly every business. Whether it’s a morning team video call, or collaborating on your latest merchandise designs, you want smooth, uninterrupted digital experiences.

Business internet services over the nbn ® help you connect to the internet with confidence. With different plans and providers available, how can you choose a service that suits your business’ needs? In this article we break down the key things to consider.

Check what’s available at your address

The first factor to check is whether nbn is available at your business address. There are over 12 million premises connected to the nbn , or ready to connect, so it’s likely you’ll have access to an nbn service.

So, first check if your premises is nbn ready and what nbn technology type is available at your address. Service provider offerings may be limited by the technology available.

Two of the most common types of nbn technologies are fibre to the premises (FTTP) and fibre to the node (FTTN).

  • FTTP technology runs optic fibre from the nearest available fibre node direct to your premises.
  • FTTN technology runs optic fibre from the nearest available fibre node in your street, or a nearby street with a final stretch of copper to your wall socket inside your premises.

Services running on FTTP technology tend to have the highest maximum speeds.

If you’re unsure whether your premises is nbn ready, you can check your address online to determine the nbn availability in your area.

If there is no nbn availability, or your business premises is not nbn ready, you’ll be shown alternative available connection types.

Choose the right nbn speed for your needs

The speed of the nbn connection will influence your internet experience.

Some of the common things you might want to do as a business can rely on a higher nbn upload speed as well as download speeds. These include:

  • Video conferencing
  • Saving files in the cloud
  • Uploading high quality images or video to your website or social media accounts
  • Transmitting large files between your team, or with suppliers and customers

Higher upload and download speeds can help you be more productive.

Which speed is right for me?

Service providers show speeds in Mbps (megabits per second), using the typical maximum speed for the plan. Here is an example of how different speeds might meet different needs.

nbn50 plans are good for:

  • Basic business applications, email, and web browsing
  • High definition streaming and video conferencing
  • Downloading large files

nbn100 plans are better for:

  • Smoother use of critical business applications with less interruptions
  • Ultra high definition streaming and video conferencing
  • Faster uploads and downloads

Remember that several factors influence the speed you experience. These include in-premise set-up and wiring.

How much tech support is available?

It’s worth looking into how your potential service provider approaches tech support. Capabilities can vary widely. What ongoing support does the provider offer? And is that in line with what’s important to you?

For example, do they offer 24x7 nbn tech support over the phone? No one wants to have a problem with their nbn connection. Having experts available around the clock gives you the peace of mind you can get issues fixed fast.

You may also want to see if providers offer proactive support to help deliver a seamless installation experience.

When you sign up with us for a new nbn connection, or switch your service to Telstra, you get an expert connection manager from the moment you submit your order. We conduct a pre-connection assessment to get you ready for installation, send you regular updates on your order progress, and check in with you after connection to ensure everything works as expected.

Is there extra back up to help keep you connected?

Check how the service provides reliability and resilience to minimise the impact of downtime. This is critical if your business relies on internet connectivity to carry out your day-to-day operations.

At Telstra, we offer 4G mobile backup with each business nbn plan (in areas with 4G mobile coverage.) In the event of a fault on the nbn , our Smart Modem can switch your service to the 4G mobile network automatically. We’ll switch your service back to the nbn when the fault is resolved.

The 4G mobile backup service is uncapped and unshaped when there’s a fault. This means there is no limit on data allowance or speed, and it's included in the plan, so you don't have to worry about additional charges.

Does the service come with advanced cyber security?

The safety and privacy of your business and its data is a paramount concern. Check whether the service provider offers security measures such as two-step verification and 24/7 network monitoring.

Telstra’s industry-leading cyber security measures and expert security team helps stop cyber threats and scams before they even get to you. And we block millions of cyber threats every single day.

How flexible is the plan?

Business conditions can change rapidly, and you want the ability to change with them.

Look for nbn plans that offer the flexibility and scalability that allow you to adapt your service. Consider your needs today but also your projected growth. This way, you can avoid paying for a level of service you don't need, while also having access to bandwidth to support your growth and make your operations more efficient.

Choosing the right nbn plan for your business can be a challenge. There are many business internet options and many different service providers to consider. Having a clear understanding of what’s available to you, what your business needs, and how the options available meet those needs is a good first step.

nbn plans for small business

How we rate business NBN providers

Our ratings compare a range of NBN providers that offer business services, based on customer satisfaction as rated by Australians.

How many Australians do we survey for our ratings?

Canstar Blue surveyed 351 Australians with a current business NBN service for their feedback on NBN providers they’ve been signed up to. Respondents had to have a current fixed-line service account for a business and that business pays the bills.

  • The outcomes reported in these ratings are measured via accredited research panels managed by Qualtrics .

What criteria are used to rate business NBN providers?

Survey respondents are asked to rate their satisfaction with their business NBN provider from zero to 10 , with zero meaning extremely dissatisfied and 10 meaning extremely satisfied. Business NBN provider satisfaction is rated on the following criteria:

  • Overall satisfaction: measures consumer satisfaction with an NBN provider as an individual score, NOT the combined total of all criteria.
  • Network performance: the NBN service was fast and reliable.
  • Value for money: the price paid for the NBN service was reasonable for the performance experienced.
  • Client service: the NBN provider had good client service, provided good support, and was easy to get in touch with when needed.
  • Bill clarity: the NBN plan bill was easy to understand.
  • Clarity and flexibility of contract: the contract for the NBN service was clear and easy to understand and offered flexibility.

How do we determine the winner?

The winning brand is the brand that receives the highest Overall satisfaction rating . All the scores from the Overall satisfaction criteria are then combined and averaged to determine the overall winner.

  • Overall satisfaction is asked as a specific question and represents an individual measure, not a combined total of all criteria.
  • The brand with the highest number of five-star ratings within the supporting criteria will become the five-star recipient in overall satisfaction, and therefore win the award. If a clear leading brand still cannot be determined from the supporting criteria, joint winners will be declared.

Which business NBN providers do we rate?

To qualify in the ratings results, brands must have received a minimum of 30 responses to be included. Therefore, not all NBN providers offering business services will be compared in this survey. Brands rated in this survey are listed below in order of best overall satisfaction.

Best business NBN providers

Ratings result.

Taking out top spot in our ratings for the third year in a row, iiNet scored five stars across almost all categories, including value for money, client service, bill clarity, clarity and flexibility of contract and customer satisfaction. It scored four stars for network performance.

Editor’s notes

iiNet keeps its business NBN offerings fairly simple with NBN 50 or NBN 100 speeds and your choice between three plans with different data and call inclusions. You’re also able to choose a 24-month plan or no-contract month-to-month plan, along with the option to BYO modem or add-on a modem (which will incur an upfront cost if you go no-contract).

In addition to your internet plan, iiNet offers the option to add on business VoIP international call packs and business phones, and also offers separate BizPhone packages which include devices and call packs.

Optus took out second with four stars for overall satisfaction, along with network performance and client service. It scored five stars in the remaining categories — value for money, bill clarity and clarity and flexibility of contract.

Optus offers a wider range of NBN speeds for its business plans, with NBN 50, 100, 250 and 1000 speed tiers available (actual speeds experienced may differ). You’ll then have the option to choose from a basic plan (which includes a modem) or its Business Internet Plus Professional plan which, in addition to the modem, includes services like a WiFi booster and WiFi security.

Rounding out our ratings was Telstra, with three stars for overall satisfaction and client service. It scored four stars for value for money, bill clarity and clarity and flexibility of contract, but scored five stars for network performance — the only one of the three providers to do so.

Telstra’s business plans are fairly straightforward, with one plan offering NBN 50 speeds and another plan with NBN 100 speeds. Both plans include a modem with 4G mobile backup during outages, unlimited calls to standard Australian landlines and mobile, unlimited data and advanced cyber security.

Other business NBN providers

The above three mentioned providers aren’t the only telcos offering NBN plans for businesses. If you’re looking for an internet plan to service your business, here’s a list of other providers offering NBN business plans:

  • Aussie Broadband
  • Southern Phone

Choosing an NBN plan for your business

Having a fast and reliable NBN service is an essential part of running a business these days, with 61% of our survey respondents stating that fast internet is crucial to their business. With 22% claiming to regularly suffer from slow or unreliable internet and almost a quarter (24%) claiming that an internet outage affected their business, finding a quality and reliable service is a must.

When you’re looking at business NBN services, it’s important to ensure you’re choosing a plan that will best suit your needs.

Much like your home internet service, having the right speed tier is essential to choosing the best NBN plan for your business. You should have an idea of how your business will use the internet, such as for video conferencing along with downloading and uploading large files, in addition to how many people will be using the internet. This will give you an idea of which speed tier will suit your business needs the best.

Add-ons and extras

You’ll also want to consider if you need any extras or add-ons to your internet services. This could include a modem, call packs and/or landline phones, internet security, dedicated customer service and more.

Not all providers will offer these services, and some may offer more add-ons and extras than others. Consider how important these services are to your business and compare providers to find the deal that will get you the best value for your money.

Frequently Asked Questions

About this research.

Canstar Blue surveyed 2,022 Australian small to medium-sized business owners or key decision-makers (i.e. the key decision-maker for the business) across a range of categories to measure and track customer satisfaction, via ISO 26362 accredited research panels managed by Qualtrics. The outcomes reported are the results from customers within the survey group who currently have a business broadband plan and the business pays the bills – in this case, 351 people.

Brands must have received at least 30 responses to be included. Results are comparative and it should be noted that brands receiving three stars have still achieved a satisfaction measure of at least six out of 10. Not all brands available in the market have been compared in this survey. The ratings table is first sorted by star ratings and then by mean overall satisfaction. A rated brand may receive a ‘N/A’ (Not Applicable) rating if it does not receive the minimum number of responses for that criteria.

Here’s some key information about getting iiNet Business NBN™. For more details, please visit our iiHelp FAQ .

How to get NBN™

Our  coverage map  is automatically updated with the latest information available from NBN Co. If you’ve checked your address and the results advised say that your address is ready to get NBN™ broadband, congratulations!

All you’ll need to do is pick out an NBN™ plan and  sign up online , or give one of our small business experts a call on 13 86 89 . If it turns out you need a technician to visit and install some NBN™ equipment, don’t worry - we'll help organise this for you.

Can I keep my existing telephone number to use on the NBN™?

In most cases, we can bring your existing telephone number over to the NBN™ network. Just call our dedicated business team on  13 86 89  to discuss the matter further.

Alternatively, you can specify that you’d like to keep your telephone number when you  sign up online . We’ll keep you updated on the progress of your number transfer.

I have existing broadband/phone services. How can I upgrade to NBN™?

Typically your address can be upgraded to NBN™ broadband with little to no downtime. More often than not you can continue to use your existing services until your new NBN™ equipment has been installed and your service has been activated. In the meantime, you should check to make sure that your current modem will be compatible with your new NBN™ broadband service.  Learn more .

Upgrading is simple, just  sign up online  or call our dedicated business team on 13 86 89 to get started. If you’re already with iiNet, you can select “Upgrade to NBN” in  My Products > Broadband  in  Toolbox .

Remember:  Moving to NBN™ broadband will not necessarily cancel your existing broadband and phone services. Once you've upgraded, please contact your existing provider to ensure your old services are cancelled, otherwise you may continue to be billed for them.

I already have NBN™. How do I switch my NBN™ provider to iiNet?

If you already have an active NBN™ Fibre connected at your address and you'd like to switch to an iiNet Business NBN™ plan , please call us on 1300 455 806 between 8AM-8PM (AEST), Monday to Friday, to arrange a Service Transfer. Once lodged, Service Transfers typically take less than 2 business days to complete, and downtime is typically less than 24 hours.

If you do not own the active NBN™ service connected at your address (i.e. you've just moved in and the previous tenant has left their services connected) then please see Connecting Outstanding FAQ instead.

NBN™ Installation

How long does it take to get connected to nbn™.

Typically, NBN™ connections are completed within 2-20 business days - this varies depending on whether or not you've already had your NBN™ equipment installed as well as NBN™ technician availability.

What happens when NBN™ is installed?

If an NBN™ technician is required to visit your premises to install any required equipment or complete your NBN™ connection, we'll be in touch to book a suitable appointment with you. An installation is typically not required if NBN™ has been previously connected at your address.

The type of equipment you'll receive depends on the type of NBN™ being connected. Give our  Connecting to the NBN™  article a read for more information.

NBN™ Contract & Fees FAQ

With iiNet Business NBN™ broadband, you get the flexibility of choosing either a no lock-in contract term or a 24 month contract term. The table below outlines the differences between the two options:

What is the New Development Fee?

Effective  1 April 2016 , the $300 New Development Fee (NDF) is charged for all NBN™ broadband connections in the following circumstances:

  • The first connection at a premises in a newly developed area i.e. a suburb with no pre-existing telecommunications infrastructure.
  • The first connection(s) at a premises in an establish area in the rare instance that a developer has increased the number of dwellings on the same plot of land e.g. demolished a single house and built a block of units.

Once the NDF has been charged at an address, it will not be charged again for subsequent connections, provided the number of dwellings at that address has not increased.

At iiNet, we pass on the full $300 NDF charge as billed by our wholesaler, NBN Co, to  new customers . For our  existing customers  switching from another kind of iiNet broadband to iiNet NBN™, we absorb part of this fee and charge just $250. These charges are clearly visible when applying for a service – they are also included in any  Critical Information Summary  for NBN™ broadband plans sold after 1 April 2016, and the Pricing Schedule of our  Customer Relationship Agreement .

Can I change my NBN™ plan after I've signed up?

You sure can! Whether you have a no lock-in contract or a 24 month contract you may switch between our NBN™ plans at any time without incurring contract break fees. A plan change fee of $29 may apply if you change to a plan of lesser value.

If you wish to change your NBN™ plan, check out our  Changing your broadband plan in Toolbox  guide or simply call us on  13 86 89 .

General Terms

Connecting to the nbn™.

  • Once the NBN™ roll out has been completed in your area, services over the legacy copper & HFC (Cable) network will no longer be available at your premises. Any copper & HFC (Cable) services that are still connected at your premises on the Disconnection Date are liable to be disconnected. iiNet Cable services in Geelong, Mildura and Ballarat are not subject to this disconnection.
  • For FTTN & FTTB this will occur outside of your premises during your installation
  • For FTTC this will occur when your NBN™ service is activated, which typically occurs when your NBN™ Connection Box is connected (and working) by either you or an NBN™ Installer
  • For FTTN, FTTC or FTTB this may be the first telephone wall socket in your premises or, in the case of multi-dwelling units, your side of the Main Distribution Frame.
  • For FTTP or HFC this is a Network Termination Device supplied by NBN Co.
  • Customer equipment (such as new or existing cabling and telecommunications outlets) beyond the network boundary point may not work when you connect to NBN™. You may require a registered cabler to connect these to your NBN™ service. You will be responsible for the cost of any such cabling work.
  • Your NBN™ service does not include a battery backup. This means your business will be unable to access any internet and telephony services provided by NBN™ during a power outage. This includes making calls to emergency service numbers like 000. Please ensure you have alternate ways of making calls, such as mobile phone.
  • If you transfer your existing NBN™ service, you understand that you are responsible to your current broadband provider for any charges incurred until this transfer is complete.
  • The activation of your selected services does not necessarily cancel any existing phone or broadband services. It is your responsibility to contact your existing service providers to ensure that unwanted services are cancelled, otherwise you may continue to be billed for them.

Telephony Services

  • NBN™ Fibre (FTTP) may include Fibre Phone instead of Netphone, which does not require a VoIP-compatible modem to operate.
  • NBN™ Satellite does not include access to NBN™ Phone.
  • Calls to 000 emergency services are not guaranteed in the event of a power outage.
  • Priority Assistance  services are not available from iiNet.
  • Calls to 19/1900 numbers are not available.
  • Calls to  certain 'high-risk' international destinations  are not available by default.
  • You are required to waive your rights under the  Customer Service Guarantee.
  • Timed international calls are charged per second.
  • Calls to Australian mobile numbers are charged per 30 second block.
  • Included calls are subject to our  Acceptable Use Policy.
  • Business NBN™ Phone must be paired with an active iiNet Business NBN™ service. If your Business NBN™ plan is cancelled, your Business NBN™ Phone service will also be cancelled.
  • Transferring an existing phone number to NBN™ Phone will disconnect the existing phone service. After a successful transfer, please contact your existing provider to ensure that your phone service and any add-on services are cancelled.
  • There are multiple types of broadband and phone on the NBN™, with different hardware setups and requirements.  Learn more.
  • A 24 month contract gives you access to a new $0 NBN™  WiFi modem.  A $10 delivery fee applies.

Choosing a Small Business NBN Internet Plan

Choosing a Small Business NBN Internet Plan cover image

The National Broadband Network (NBN) is Australia’s wholesale internet provider. This means that when you sign up for an NBN plan, you must order the service through a telco (e.g. Telstra, Optus, TPG).

Graphic showing connected internet network

Are you ready to sign up to an NBN internet service?

If you have the internet at your small business but are not yet on the NBN, your telco will send you a letter telling you when the NBN is coming to your area.

You can also check NBN Co’s website to find out when it will be available.

If you don’t move to the NBN, then your existing phone line and internet services will eventually be permanently disconnected. This means that you may also lose your business phone number.

How do you choose an NBN internet provider?

Picking your speed.

You’ll first need to decide what speed plan to choose. This will depend on how many people use the internet in your small business and how they use it. The more people using the internet at the same time, the slower it will go, so you will need a higher speed plan to prevent slow- downs.

Graphic showing best time for best internet speed

If your business uses video conferencing, streams video and makes calls over the internet (known as VoIP calls), you’ll also need to look at faster NBN plans.

Telcos will usually advertise internet plans with two speeds:

  • The top speed that the NBN internet plan can achieve.

Graphic showing computer on WiFi downloading files

Picking your provider

Quickly compare internet plans from different telcos with comparator websites like WhistleOut and Finder .

Look for the Critical Information Summary (CIS) for each plan and use it to compare offers. These are located on all telcos’ websites and can be requested in-store.

The CIS contains information about the plan such as the price, fees for leaving the contract early, contract length, download limits

You can also see which telcos deliver the fastest speeds by checking the ACCC’s Measuring Broadband Australia website - measuringbroadbandaustralia.com.au

Your rights

Before you buy an NBN business plan, all telcos need to give you a one-page Key Facts Sheet that explains:

  • Typical download speeds available during standard work hours
  • That your NBN service won’t function during power failures
  • That you need to check if your security alarm service is NBN compatible
  • If you can keep your phone number
  • Whether the speed plan you chose is available at your workplace

For your small business, you may also want to consider:

  • Using a higher speed plan than you may use at home
  • Connecting your computers through Ethernet cables - Wi-Fi is less effective as more users are added.

People using internet for business

Service Level

  • Business grade services can be more reliable. This is because the telco may better manage peak use and maintain speeds.
  • Business grade plans may also include dedicated support teams to help with problems.

Service Level Agreements

Backup Services

  • Having mobiles on standby to forward calls to in case of an NBN outage.
  • Backup power supply – because NBN connections don’t work in power outages.
  • Storing data offsite, such as in a cloud account. If there is an NBN outage, this will allow you to still access your data from an internet connected device, such as a mobile phone.

Understanding Business NBN: The Ultimate Guide for Small Businesses

Understanding Business NBN: The Ultimate Guide for Small Businesses

by Cherie McCord

In today’s digital age, high-speed internet has become necessary for businesses of all sizes. With the National Broadband Network (NBN) rollout, Australian businesses now have access to faster and more reliable internet than ever before. In this article, we will provide an in-depth guide to  business NBN , including what it is, how it works, its benefits for small businesses, and how to choose the right plan for your business.

Table of Contents

What is Business NBN?

It is a dedicated broadband service designed specifically for small and medium-sized businesses. It provides high-speed internet access using the National Broadband Network infrastructure, which is owned and operated by NBN Co. Unlike residential NBN plans, business NBN plans offer higher speeds, greater reliability, and enhanced support for business needs as multiple users, prioritized traffic, and security features.

How Does Business NBN Work?

It uses a fibre optic or fixed wireless connection to provide high-speed internet to your business premises. The NBN Co installs the necessary equipment and provides a dedicated line to your business, ensuring your internet speeds are unaffected by other users in your area. Depending on your business needs and budget, plans are available in different speed tiers, ranging from 25Mbps to 1000Mbps.

Benefits of Business NBN for Small Businesses

Switching to business NBN can offer a range of benefits for small businesses, including:

Increased Productivity

With faster internet speeds and excellent reliability, your employees can work more efficiently and quickly complete tasks, increasing overall productivity.

Better Customer Experience

It provides higher upload and download speeds, enabling you to respond to customer inquiries faster and provide a better customer experience.

Enhanced Security

The plans come with advanced security features such as firewalls, anti-virus software, and VPNs, ensuring your business data is protected from online threats.

Cost-Effective

Despite being a dedicated service, NBN plans are competitively priced, making it an affordable option for small businesses.

Scalability

Plans are designed to grow your business. As your business expands, you can easily upgrade to a higher speed tier or add features such as static IP addresses or virtual private networks (VPNs).

How to Choose the Right Business NBN Plan for Your Business

Choosing the right NBN plan for your business can be daunting. Here are some factors to consider when selecting a plan:

Speed Requirements

Consider your business’s internet usage and the service’s number of users. Choose a plan that offers sufficient speed to meet your business needs.

Business NBN plans are available at different price points. Determine your budget and choose a plan that offers the best value for money.

Support and Service Level Agreement (SLA)

Check the provider’s SLA and customer support policies. Choose a provider that offers fast response times and reliable support.

Additional Features

Consider any additional features your business may need, such as static IP addresses, VPNs, or cloud storage.

NBN offers small businesses faster, more reliable internet access and a range of benefits, including increased productivity, better customer experience, enhanced security, cost-effectiveness, and scalability. When choosing an NBN plan, consider your business needs, budget and additional features. With the right plan, your business can enjoy the benefits of high-speed internet and stay ahead of the competition.

1. What is the difference between residential NBN and Business NBN?

Business NBN offers higher speeds, greater reliability and enhanced support for business needs such as multiple users, dedicated IP addresses and prioritised traffic during peak usage hours. Residential NBN plans are designed for personal use and may not provide the same performance and support as business NBN plans.

2. Do I need to switch to business NBN if I have a residential NBN plan?

A residential NBN plan may be sufficient if you use the internet for personal use. However, if you are running a business, we recommend switching to NBN for higher speeds, better reliability, and enhanced support for business needs.

3. How long does it take to set up NBN?

The time it takes to set up NBN depends on various factors, including the location of your business and the availability of NBN infrastructure in your area. However, most providers offer a quick and easy installation process, and you can expect to be up and running within a few days.

4. Can I use my existing modem with business NBN?

While some providers may allow you to use your existing modem, using the modem provided by your business NBN provider is recommended to ensure compatibility and optimal performance.

5. Can I upgrade my NBN plan if my business grows?

Yes, NBN plans are designed to grow with your business. You can easily upgrade to a higher speed tier or add additional features as your business expands.

We hope this article has provided a comprehensive guide to NBN for small businesses. If you’re considering switching to business NBN, we recommend researching different providers and plans to find the best fit for your business needs and budget. With high-speed internet access, your business can stay competitive and thrive in today’s digital landscape.

nbn plans for small business

There’s no doubt that internet access is crucial for many businesses, especially since the COVID-19 pandemic led to so many establishments needing to have their employees work remotely. With the NBN being steadily rolled out to more and more areas, more businesses now have the option to get internet access through this broadband network.

In whatever capacity a business needs the internet for, whether it’s just for communication with partners, employees and clients or it’s for something more intensive, the fact remains that choosing the best NBN plans is crucial for many, if not all businesses. So how do you make sure you sign up for the best plan and are getting the best value for money?

In some ways, it’s similar to choosing a plan for your household – but it’s also different in some other ways. Here are some factors to remember.

Available Providers

Let’s get this part out of the way first: the NBN is the wholesaler, so looking for an NBN plan won’t narrow down your choices that much. Where your business is located will affect which internet service providers (ISPs) you’ll end up choosing from.

That said, it’s possible to have the same provider for both your home and your business if you don’t live that far from your work. However, if your business is located quite far from your home, it’s more likely that you’ll have to go with a different internet service provider. Your choices could even be limited further if you need to consider things like a phone line, and in such cases it might be more cost-effective to focus on ISPs who offer phone service in addition to internet access.

Your Business’s Needs

Once you know which providers you’ll ultimately be choosing from, the next factor is to consider what your business needs out of the internet, and how it’ll use that access. After all, you want your organisation to run as smoothly as possible.

A good guideline for picking potential internet plans is to keep the number of users and your online activities in mind. You’ll need more Mbps if you have more employees or have more bandwidth-heavy online activities – or both.

Let’s say your business has 50 employees constantly uploading or downloading files, and each of them needs to teleconference with someone at least twice a day. You’ll need a plan from a higher speed tier, compared to if you had only 15 employees who rarely need to download or upload files and only need to use teleconferencing apps like Zoom or Skype once a month.

Consider A Business NBN Plan

A business NBN plan , as the name implies, is one that’s tailored for businesses. As far as speed and performance is concerned, plans for home and business aren’t that different. Plus, NBN Co won’t actually differentiate between residential or business customers. However, business NBN plans have a few extra features that are worth the investment.

For instance, business NBN plans could include an enhanced service level agreement (eSLA), which providers who purchased extra support from NBN Co pass on to their users. An eSLA typically specifies methods for problem resolution as well as a timeframe for said resolution.

Any business whose activities hinge on internet access are sure to find this helpful. As you can tell, such extra or priority support isn’t available with residential plans.

Optus details NBN plans for small business

Lorna Brett

Lorna Brett

February 7, 2012

Optus has launched a range of packages designed to give small businesses in the first five mainland release sites affordable access to the National Broadband Network (NBN) , with plans beginning at $59 per month.

The plans are ideal for offices with up to five employees, Optus said, and SMBs can choose from a range of plans beginning at $59 per month offering high-speed data, voice and cloud-based email and collaboration tools, with the flexibility to scale connection speed up or down based on requirements.

To make it easier for businesses to go digital, all the packages finclude a single user license for Optus OfficeApps Email and Collaboration suite, webSMS and a new business domain name. OfficeApps , a cloud-based solution, gives SMBs access to Google Applications for Business , including email, calendar and documents, and the ability to send personalised bulk SMS via the web.

For customers looking for data allowance and faster speeds, Optus has created the $59, $89, and $119 business data packages which are available on a 12 or 24 month contract. The $59 package offers up to 100GB of anytime data, while the $89 and $119 plans include 500GB and 1,000GB of data allowance respectively.

For customers looking to combine their broadband and business phone, Optus offers the $99, $109 and $129 business data and phone packages. On the $99 business data and phone package businesses receive 500GB of data and unlimited standard calls to fixed line numbers and Optus mobiles within Australia. Small businesses that require unlimited standard calls to fixed lines and mobiles within Australia can opt for the $109 and $129 packages, which include 500GB and 1,000GB of data respectively.

According to Optus SMB managing director Rohan Ganeson, the NBN opens a door for small businesses to take advantage of high-speed broadband, and do business new ways.

“Optus NBN packages have been designed to offer great flexibility and value and make it easier for small businesses to take the leap into the digital world, from establishing an online presence to reach new customers, to running their applications in the cloud for 24/7 access to business data,” Ganeson said.

All Optus’ NBN plans include an NBN Wi-Fi modem and the standard speed pack, ideal for basic multimedia streaming, web browsing and email. This can be scaled up or down at any time to suit a business’ online needs.
