You’d be forgiven for not thinking of daguerreotype, a method of creating images using silvered copper plates and mercury-based chemicals, as a type of photography (or, at all, given that it was developed in the 1850s). However, if you are looking to create stunning works of art in a manner that isn’t commonly practiced, taking a daguerreotype class might be worth your while. You’ll learn how to prep the plates, prepare the chemicals (which are now, thankfully, mercury free) and process the images. By the end of the class, you’ll have your own daguerreotype image to take home and put on display.

This is our beginner photography class, which we have designed to be:

• Fun: We have prepared both indoor and outdoor exercises to make sure you are constantly practicing what you learn.
• Effective: You won't believe how much you will learn in this 8 student class. Your satisfaction is guaranteed after attending all 6 classes. See what others think on our Yelp reviews.

What will I learn?

By the end of this class you will control your camera in Manual Mode by having a clear understanding of:

• Shutter Speed
• Focus Control
• White Balance
• Rule of Thirds 
• Basic use of the built in flash

How long is the course?

This is a 12-hour class that meets 6 times for 2 hours each session. We have classes that meet once a week and classes that meet three times a week.

What type camera do I need for the class?

For this course you will need a DSLR camera , Mirrorless camera  or Compact camera, which has Aperture (A/Av) Priority , Shutter (S/Tv) Priority  and Manual Mode.

What to Photograph in your city?

Where to begin?! Simply stepping out your home offers a whole heap of photography possibilities. If you're feeling overwhelmed by the number of options we offer, figure out what genre of photography you want to focus on. Spend a morning or afternoon walking around with your camera and see what attracts you the most.

An obvious choice would be architecture photography, since New York is jam-packed with the most iconic buildings in the world. Even though it's one of the most photographed landmarks in the world, why not try to take an original photo of the Empire State Building? Experiment with the composition, framing and light to avoid a clichéd tourist shot.

With 8.5 million neighbors from all over the world, is there a more exciting city to practice street photography? We doubt it! Walking from one block to the other can feel like travelling to another country. The streets are alive and there is always something unexpected around the corner. Our street photography class will teach you to capture those funny, weird and breath-taking moments, before they quickly disappear.

Are your out-of-town friends coming to visit? Take them to your favorite rooftop bars to get that memorable skyline shot. We offer classes in selfies so you can impress everyone at the table with the best group photo! Or, if you need to get a gift for your arty family members, our vouchers make the perfect present.

Receiving hands-on training from our faculty in a wide range of photographic disciplines, our students gain spectacular insight into what it means to pursue creative goals in photography.

Nancy Burson

Acclaimed artist/photographer Nancy Burson’s work is shown in museums and galleries internationally. “Seeing and Believing”, her traveling 2002 retrospective originating at the Grey Art Gallery, was nominated for Best Solo Museum Show of the Year in New York City by the International Association of Art Critics. She has served as a visiting professor at Harvard and was a member of the adjunct photography faculty at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts for five years.

Her work is included in museums worldwide including the MoMA, Metropolitan Museum, and the Whitney Museum in New York City, as well as the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the Center Georges Pompidou in Paris, the LA County Museum of Art, and the Getty Museum, MoMA (San Francisco), the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, and the Smithsonian Museum in Washington DC, as well as many others. She has collaborated with Creative Time, the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, and Deutsche Bank in completing several important public art projects in NYC.

David Mager

Chair of photography.

Native New Yorker David Mager has worked as a commercial photographer for over 20 years, shooting mostly in the publishing market. Clients have included Disney, DK, Scholastic, Der Speigel, McGraw-Hill, Penguin, Time Out NY, Parents Magazine, and Park Place Magazine, to name a few.

David is an Adobe Certified Expert in Photoshop Lightroom and has received a Master’s of Professional Studies from the School of Visual Arts as well as a Bachelor of Fine Arts from New York University.

For the last 10 years, David has been teaching and sharing his industry experience with students at the New York Film Academy.

Naomi White

Naomi White is a feminist, artist, activist, and educator invested in ideas at the intersection of political ecology and photography. She is the winner of PDN’s Objects of Desire award and has exhibited throughout North America and Europe, including the Center for Creative Photography, Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, GE World Headquarters; CAMP Gallery, Scope Miami, and Photo LA. She has been awarded residencies at Jentel Arts and Artist Residencies in Motherhood.

Her work has been published in  PDN, The Brooklyn Rail, Uncertain States , and  On Art & Aesthetics . White holds an MFA in Photography and Related Media from SVA in New York, and a BA in English Literature from San Francisco State.
