If you’re looking for printable activities for 2-year-olds , I’ve got a great list of resources for you here!

Many moms love to let their toddlers get creative with crafts, cutting, gluing, etc… and the great news is that there are plenty of free printable activities for 2-year-olds available online.

These activities for toddlers build a variety of skills. Any type of activity that you do alongside your toddler is great at helping them learn to communicate with you and express what they want to say. Talk to them about what they are looking at, what they are sorting/cutting/etc., and anything about their activity that will stimulate their brain to learn to respond and communicate with you.

This is such a rewarding time as you engage with your toddler and help him/her learn new things! Don’t worry about the times when you can’t be right next to your 2-year-old during his/her activity. They also need some time alone (supervised from a distance 😀) to learn how to stay busy and get creative all on their own. Then there’s the middle ground, where you could be cooking in the kitchen and have them next to you doing an activity – ask them what they’re doing and peek at their progress now and then.

Keeping a 2-year-old busy with fun activities can be a full-time job 😄, so you’ll want to print out several of these activities to have on hand.

I like to keep a folder full of printables for when my 2-year-old wants to “do an activity.”

Are you looking for free printables for toddlers - particularly 1, 2 or 3 year olds?  I know many of you homeschool and are always on the lookout for quality free educational printables for toddlers so I've put together a great free toddler printable collection for you.

If you're a homeschooling parent, or you're looking for some way to entertain your toddler printables can be a good way to go. If you're a regular reader of my site, you'll know that I encourage play based learning like these ABC activities for toddlers , Counting Activitie s and Science Experiments .

I do encourage you to avoid traditional worksheets for toddlers - at this age, toddlers shouldn't be learning by filling in pieces of paper. Trust me - play based is better!

What you can do though is use educational printables in your play.

These free printables for toddlers are designed to be used in a fun play based way. These printables are all free to download.

Your toddler will then make mud balls and have to throw them into the mud monster’s mouth. Your 2-year-old is learning to throw overhand at this stage, and this is a fun activity to practice.

Fun Tip: Let your toddler help you make the mud. The process of mixing sand and water is a valuable learning opportunity.

In this series you’ll find playful alphabet activities for 2-year-olds .

If your two-year-old is showing an interest in learning the alphabet and doing simple, structured activities with you, consider doing a playful letter-of-the-week series.

My Two had seen her older siblings do many learning activities with me and was ready for her own. When she started asking, “When is it my turn to do a ‘tivity?” I decided to start teaching her the alphabet.

Progress was slow during the first few months, so we spent several weeks on each letter. By the time she was 2 1/2, however, her ability to remember the letters had increased. At this point we switched to one letter each week.

Because of life getting in the way (she has five siblings), we got a little behind some months. For that reason, we did letters S-Z during the first couple of months after her third birthday.

I find my ideas in my printed copy of this ebook . Since many of the activities are too advanced for my Two, I rely on the enormous list of ideas in the Appendix.

We began with the letters of her name (A, M, H, I, R) and and did the rest of the letters in alphabetical order.

20+ Super Easy Activities for 2 Year-Olds

While 2 year-olds get a bad rap (i.e. “Terrible Two’s”) I gotta say, I love them. Irrational? Sure. But after driving you nuts, they have a way of throwing their little arms around you and turning you into putty.

They love whole-heartedly, say hilarious things, and are fascinated by basically everything (except vegetables).

The hard part: keeping them busy and engaged, without acting as their sole source of entertainment. 

We’ve got a million things our to-do list. And if planning and organizing elaborate and messy toddler activities is not on that list, you’re in the right place. Because here I’ve stockpiled a list of super easy activities for 2 year-olds that are:

• fun & help develop fine motor skills

Of of these activities are crazy easy to whip up and will keep your toddler busy so you can get stuff done.

SUPPLIES YOU MAY NEED

There are a few simple and inexpensive toddler activity staples worth having around the house for on-the-fly fun. Here’s what I recommend:

• Kinetic sand

Other than these few items (which you most-likely have already), you’ve probably got everything else lying around your house. If you don’t have them and don’t want to pick them up, you can whip up a batch very quickly using this easy play dough recipe or this recipe for kinetic sand .

If you wanted to spend a couple of bucks to get a Craft Kit with pipe cleaners, pom-poms, and googly eyes, you’ve basically got everything you need for endless toddler fun.

SUPER EASY ACTIVITIES FOR 2 YEAR-OLDS 

I’ve listed the activities based on the supplies needed to make it easier to scan to find the right activity for your little one based on what you have.

Activities with Play Dough & Kinetic Sand

• Play Dough and cookie cutters – Let your toddler practice smashing dough and using cookie cutters to make shapes or letters.
• Play Dough with small toys – My kids love playing with small toys in play dough. for example, they love making terrain for their little dinosaurs and animals . Or they can imprint the animals and make “fossils.”
• Smash with Tools – Grab a potato masher or other kitchen utensil and let your child explore with smashing the play dough.
• Bug Fossils – This is a simple play dough activity from Plain Vanilla Mom.
• Printable Play Dough Mats – These free play dough mats from Picklebums are beyond brilliant and will let your little one’s imagination run wild (even my older kids like these!).
• Kinetic Sand Lego Stamping – Super simple kinetic sand activity from And Next Comes L.
• Straws, Pasta, and Playdough Activity – This is a fantastic STEAM activity from Raising Dragons.

Activities Using Junk Mail or Recycling

• Rip Junk Mail – Let your child’s destructive instincts let loose by allowing her to rip up junk mail into strips or other shapes. Then you can get your toddler to place the ripped pieces into a trash bin or other container.
• Cut up Junk Mail – If your toddler is ready to use safety scissors , you can let your little one practice cutting up junk mail or scratch paper then putting t in
• Build with Recycling – All the items in your recycling bin (empty cereal boxes, toilet paper rolls, etc) make for good building materials for your toddler.
• Paper Ball Toss – After crumpling up paper/junk mail into balls, your toddler can practice trying to throw the balls into the waste basket.

Activities Using Pom-Poms

• Pom-Pom Push  – All you need are pom-poms and old food containers for this activity from Busy Toddler.
• Grab & Sort (from Busy Toddler)
• Pom-Pom Whisk – This activity from Hello Wonderful is perfect for toddlers learning fine motor skills.
• Pom-Pom Pouring – Another easy pom-pom activity from Busy Toddler using stuff you already have around your house.
• Scooping Pom-Poms – A simple pom-pom activity from Buggy and Buddy

Miscellaneous Easy Activities for 2 Year-Olds

• Rainbow in a Bag – A mess-free way for your toddler to explore with paint from Powerful Mothering.
• Laundry Hamper Fishing – from Munchkins and Moms
• Card-Slot Drop from Busy Toddler
• Pasta Jewelry – With tube pasta and pipe cleaners , let your toddler thread the pasta to create pasta jewelry! While you can use ribbon or yarn, using pipe cleaners is much easier for such little fingers.

PERSONALIZE A ROUTINE CHART FOR YOUR 2 YEAR OLD

Kids need engaging activities where they can play and let their imaginations run wild. And they also need routines and schedules that they can expect.

With so much out of their control, kids are happier when they have routines they can rely on. And as a parent, you’re happier when things run smoothly and there are fewer tantrums.

So in addition to keeping an arsenal of activities to keep your little one busy, having set routines also go a long way to keeping your child happy.

Maybe it’s time to introduce your toddler to the one activity that all kids learn to love at some point in their lives, coloring. In this post, you’ll find 21 fun coloring pages for 2-year-olds that you can download and print for free at home.

Coloring is great for kids, two-year-olds included. It can help your toddler develop hand strength, improve their fine motor skills, and lets your child practice holding a pen (pencils/crayons), be focused and creative.

I’m sure your child has been playing with crayons many times before, but now that he/she is a bit bigger it’s nice to let them scribble on actual coloring pages rather than always just put a blank page in front of them. It’s May, so just checking in… “How is everybody doing?”

In case you missed it, Sesame Street’s lovable Elmo posed that very question on social media earlier this year – and the responses came flooding in. From relationship problems to financial troubles, and feelings of exhaustion, angst, loneliness, and disconnection, people shared their struggles. At last count, Elmo’s post had garnered more than 217 million views, 15,000 reposts, 165,000 likes, and 45,000 responses on one social media platform alone. What this helps reveal is that many of us are NOT okay – and it’s important to acknowledge and address that, and make sure people know that help is available. SAMHSA has several supports and resources that can help.

Mental Health Conditions Can Affect Anyone

May is Mental Health Awareness Month , a good reminder to focus on the importance of mental health and its impact on our well-being. Mental health conditions can affect anyone, regardless of gender, age, race, ethnicity, or income level. Recent data (PDF | 622 KB) help underscore that our nation is facing an unprecedented mental health crisis among people of all ages and backgrounds, including young children and older adults. To put this into perspective, if you were standing in a room full of people, at least one out of every five of those people likely experienced anxiety, depression, or other mental health conditions in the last year.

The good news is… mental health conditions are treatable. As illustrated by the many athletes, entertainers, and prominent public figures who have spoken openly about their experiences, people living with mental illness can — and do — lead happy and productive lives. And this includes serious mental illnesses , such as bipolar disorder, major depressive disorder, and schizophrenia, which can interfere with someone’s life and ability to function. Similar to medical conditions like diabetes, with early and consistent treatment, people with serious mental illnesses can manage their conditions, overcome challenges, and enjoy meaningful, productive lives.

At SAMHSA, we are committed to increasing access to mental health services and supports nationwide. We understand that many Americans may feel reluctant to reach out for help or to seek care; we want you to know that we see you, we hear you, and we support you. We believe that with the right care, anyone affected by – or at risk for – a mental health condition can achieve well-being and thrive. And if you take care of yourself, you might also be a support for others -- a lifeline for someone else.

Language Matters When It Comes to Mental Health

The more we talk about mental health together, the more normalized these conversations become – ultimately empowering people to seek the help they need. And fortunately, more people are now talking about and prioritizing their mental health, just as they would their physical health. They are also embracing self-care to improve overall well-being. This is critical because when you take care of your mental health, your physical and emotional health also improves, and you’re more likely to learn and work productively, and effectively cope with life stressors. However, self-care looks different for everyone. Exercise, sleep, and a balanced diet might be the strategy for some, while others might benefit from joining a support group, or seeing a mental health professional. It’s important to identify what works best for you.

Just like you might share tips with friends about maintaining a healthy weight or improving blood pressure, consider taking the opportunity this month to share your experience of how you are caring for your mental health. Help enforce the message that “it’s okay to not be okay,” and encourage people (PDF | 98 KB) to seek help when they need it. And, as you have those conversations, think about the words that you use: language is powerful, and your choice of words can help break down misconceptions, or contribute to them. One of the most impactful ways to communicate about mental health is to use person-first language to put the person before their diagnosis, disability, or other characteristics. For example:

• Instead of saying, “John is schizophrenic…or bipolar,” say “John is a person who has schizophrenia…or who has bipolar disorder.”
• Instead of describing someone as “suffering from a mental illness,” say “experiencing or living with a mental illness.”

It’s also important to use language that promotes inclusivity and respect. When we use open, compassionate, and equitable language around mental health issues, we empower ourselves and encourage others to find the help they need.

Take Action

SAMHSA will host several “Mental Health Awareness Month” events for partners and grantees throughout May. Details on any virtual events open to the public will be available on our Mental Health Awareness Month webpage .

Mental Health Action Day is May 16, providing an opportunity to take the next step from awareness to action for yourself, a loved one, or your community. This could be as simple as adopting a positive “mental health habit” like eating a balanced diet, getting a good night’s rest, or exercising, or offering support to a friend or family member who is struggling. Here are some additional strategies to consider on Mental Health Action Day.

• Practice gratitude: Think about what you’re thankful for – like supportive family and friends, a safe home, or even a beautiful day. Or find something to celebrate, like a recent accomplishment. Consciously practicing gratitude may reduce feelings of stress and anxiety.
• Volunteer: Participating in community organizations and finding opportunities to help others can provide a positive boost and sense of purpose.
• Engage in random acts of kindness: Buy a cup of coffee for the person in line behind you, hold the door open for a stranger, or make food for a neighbor or colleague. There are many small acts that can brighten someone else’s day.
• Practice mindfulness: Take a few minutes to meditate, take a yoga class or do some breathing exercises to promote relaxation and reduce stress.
• Seek Help: Whether it is for yourself of someone else, seek help through SAMHSA’s resources. Recovery is possible.

Show Compassion – and Be a Lifeline to Others

In addition to focusing on your own self-care this Mental Health Awareness Month, consider checking in on loved ones.

• Parents/Kids: If you are a parent or caregiver, talk to your kids about their mental health. Getting help during the early stages of mental illness, or at the first signs of mild behavioral health symptoms, can help those symptoms from developing into more serious conditions.
• Older Adults: If you know an older adult who may be experiencing bereavement, illness, or isolation, watch for clues and ask how they are doing during visits. CDC data shows that suicide rates are on the rise, especially among adults ages 65 and older – so it’s critical to recognize the warning signs so we can offer help.
• New Mothers: If you know someone who is pregnant or recently gave birth, check to see how they’re feeling. About 1 in 8 women report symptoms of postpartum depression in the year after giving birth – so it’s quite common and nobody should feel embarrassed or hesitant to reach out for help. But if left untreated, maternal mental health issues can lead to devastating consequences, including pregnancy-related deaths, such as suicides, drug overdoses and other unintentional injuries.

These are just a few examples of how you can serve as a lifeline to others this month and beyond. Simply listening, and providing support, can make a significant – and even lifesaving – difference to someone living with mental illness.

To quote Elmo’s heart-felt follow-up post , “Elmo is glad he asked! Elmo learned that it is important to ask a friend how they are doing.” Consider heeding that advice. By encouraging others to seek or access help, or simply by being there for someone when they need us, we instill hope in ourselves and those around us.
