Typical Requirements to Teach English in Japan

You must first confirm that you're eligible for teaching jobs in Japan. The main requirements are:

  • Be a native English speaker  from the U.S., U.K., Canada, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, etc.
  • Hold a bachelor’s degree  in any field
  • Provide proof of a clean background check

A TEFL certificate is not required for some ESL jobs in Japan, including the JET Program . However, applicants with a TEFL certification of at least 120-hours have a significant competitive edge.

Types of Teaching Jobs in Japan

Public Schools

Teaching English at Japanese public schools is one of the most popular ways to teach English in Japan. Native English speakers are hired as ALTs, or "Assistant Language Teachers," and are placed in elementary, middle, and high schools.

The JET Program  is a government-sponsored initiative that hires native speakers as ALTs and cultural ambassadors in Japan. Another option is to apply to be a teaching assistant with  Interac , a private company that places teachers in public schools.

An English teaching assistant at a public school in Japan can earn anywhere between ¥200,000-¥330,000 per month ($1,750-$2,850), depending on which program you choose and your qualifications. JET participants enjoy additional perks like 20 days of paid vacation, insurance, and retirement.

Private Language Schools (Eikaiwa)

Eikaiwas are private language schools that cater to adults and children interested in intensive English instruction. Teachers employed at an Eikaiwa typically experience longer teaching hours that begin in the early afternoon tutoring adults and run into the evenings tutoring young students. You’ll also be required to work weekends.

Eikaiwa English teachers typically make ¥240,000-¥275,000 per month ($2,100-$2,400) and enjoy benefits like contract bonuses, paid time off, and access to national insurance.

International Schools

Qualified teachers with a degree in education and a teaching license can teach English at international schools in Japan. Instruction is often entirely in English, and you are the primary teacher in your classes.

International school positions typically provide the highest salaries and best benefits. Teachers can expect to earn between ¥200,000-¥600,000 per month ($1,750-$5,200) with benefits that include paid vacation, flight reimbursement, a pension, and more.

Once you decide which English teaching job in Japan, it’s time to start job hunting!

Applying to the CIEE TEFL Job Placement Opportunity

CIEE TEFL offers a unique opportunity to teach English in Japan with well-respected English conversation schools. As a teacher in Japan, you will enjoy a salary starting at 275,000 JPY and a competitive benefits package, as well as the opportunity to immerse yourself in Japanese culture.

To apply, you must first enroll in either the 150-Hour or 180-Hour CIEE TEFL course. Once enrolled in a TEFL course, CIEE TEFL will send your application materials directly to trusted employers to expedite the hiring process. Applications are accepted year-round.

Applying to the JET Program

Applying to the  Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Program  is a competitive and complicated process, but it’s worth it due to the high salary and excellent benefits. The starting salary for JET is ¥280,000 per month ($2,427), and teachers receive a raise each subsequent year they work with the program. JET teaching assistants are expected to be at the school during regular hours, typically about 35 hours per week.

Applying to JET is long and complicated, involving a lot of documentation and an in-person interview at home. Additionally, applicants cannot choose where they're placed but rather list their top three preferences. The process begins on the  JET Portal  and is typically due in late September to mid-November.

Applying to Interac

Interac  is quite similar to the JET Program in that it places teachers in public schools, although it's significantly less competitive and pays a bit less. Interac ALTs are paid approximately ¥200,000-¥225,000 per month ($1,750-$1,950).

Interac accepts applications year-round; however, most positions are filled for the fall and spring. Therefore, applications should be submitted by May or November to be considered during these peak hiring periods.

Applying to Interac  starts with an online application form that asks for your personal information and work experience. If your application passes the initial screening, the next steps are a phone interview and then an online meeting or seminar before a job offer is extended.

ESL Job Boards in Japan

If you’re interested in finding a job teaching English outside of the public school system, the best places to find open positions are online boards.

Jobs in Japan  is a vast online forum where hiring schools post job ads for teachers. The  O-Hayo Sensei Newsletter  is another excellent resource that lists new teaching positions across Japan every two weeks.

Another option is to apply directly to well-known school chains in Japan like  Shane Schools and NOVA .

Frequently Asked Questions

You’ve got questions. We’ve got answers.

There’s no denying that the most popular places to live in Japan are Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto. Finding a teaching job in these big cities is not impossible, but it can be more difficult.

Here’s a breakdown of the best places to teach in Japan.

Tokyo   has the most job opportunities but also a higher living cost and a more competitive application process. Receiving a placement in Tokyo with the JET Program or Interac is unlikely due to the low number of available positions and the high number of participants. However, finding teaching jobs at private language schools (Eikaiwa) is certainly possible.

Osaka   is known for its central locale and incredible food scene. ESL jobs are abundant, and the salaries are quite good. Similarly, there aren't many JET positions in Osaka, but instead, most teachers work for private schools.

Kyoto   offers a quieter way of life and is known as the country's cultural capital with over 2,000 historic temples to discover. Kyoto’s teaching market is quite similar to Osaka.

Japan's countryside  allows teachers to save more and relish a more peaceful experience away from the city. Although rural, the demand for English teachers is still high. And because Japan's public transportation is extensive, exciting urban centers are usually not too far away for a weekend trip.

Some less “popular” (but still incredible)   destinations in Japan to consider include Chiba, a Tokyo commuter city, and Nagoya, the country's fourth-largest city. The Tottori and Shimane Prefectures  also offers an intimate experience in Japan's pretty inaka or countryside.

One of the best ways to learn more about life in Japan is through personal reviews. These blog posts share helpful insights that can help you prepare for your journey abroad.

While some opportunities may not require a TEFL certificate, teaching jobs in Japan are highly competitive. For that reason, choosing to get TEFL certified before teaching in Japan can help your resume stand out.

Other teaching jobs in Japan prefer applicants with a reputable TEFL certificate with 120-hours or more. The right TEFL course also equips aspiring teachers with the professional qualifications and skills needed for the classroom.

CIEE TEFL’s 150-Hour TEFL Certification

CIEE TEFL offers one of the best TEFL courses for those interested in teaching English abroad. As an internationally recognized and trusted brand, CIEE TEFL has a proven track record of helping graduates successfully secure their dream jobs abroad.

CIEE TEFL's 150-hour can be completed entirely online in just three months and checks all the boxes for what hiring schools in Japan are looking for:

  • 130 hours of  ACCET accredited  coursework
  • 20 hour  TEFL practicum
  • Instruction by  highly qualified TEFL tutors
  • Job search assistance
  • $150 discount for government teach abroad participants like JET

Your earning potential as an English teacher in Japan can vary widely depending on your teaching job, as well as your professional background.  On average, the  teaching English in Japan salary ranges between ¥200,000-¥330,000 per month ($1,750-$2,850).

Cost of Living in Japan

The  cost of living in Japan  can be a bit expensive, especially in larger cities like Tokyo and Osaka. Many English teachers find that their  cost of living ranges between ¥150,000 - ¥250,000+ per month ($1,300-$2,100+).

Most teaching positions do not include subsidized housing, although some schools assist teachers in finding accommodation.   Rent for a shared apartment in Japan or a studio is typically about ¥50,000 ($435) per month in smaller cities and ¥80,000+ ($700) in Tokyo and other big cities.

Who can teach English in Japan?

Teaching English is perfect for people who wish to experience life in another country. Whether you’re looking to take a break from working at home, go on a paid gap year, or set up a full career overseas. Teaching can be a brilliant springboard to take a leap in any direction you choose.

So long as you’re fluent in English, over 18 years old, and looking for adventure, then teaching could be for you.

What you'll need:

• Be 21+ years old • Have a bachelors degree (any subject) • A recognized 120 hour TEFL certificate • Hold a passport of Britain, US, Ireland, Canada, Australia, South Africa, New Zealand • A clean criminal record

What you don’t need:

• Ability to speak Japanese • Previous teaching experience • Travel experience • Chopstick skills (you’ll learn fast!)

Do I need to have teaching experience?

You don’t need any previous experience to start teaching in Japan! If you’re new to teaching, you can learn everything you need to know through our online TEFL certification course and be ready to start working within a matter of weeks. You’ll also get additional training when you arrive in Japan.

Do I need to be a native speaker to teach in Japan?

Most teaching positions in Japan require native speakers (UK/US/CAN/AUS/NZ/SA passport holders), however, it can also be possible for qualified non-natives to secure teaching jobs. Please check for more details.

Can I teach in Japan if I have tattoos or dyed hair?

This can be a bit of a tricky one. Japan has a very conservative society, and schools have strict requirements when it comes to personal appearances. Most importantly:

  • No visible tattoos (if they can be covered by a long-sleeve shirt this should be fine).
  • Shaven or neatly trimmed facial hair.
  • Natural hair colors.
  • Formal working clothes – including a tie and buttoned shirt for men.

Do I need to speak Japanese?

When teaching English in Japan, or elsewhere, you won’t need to speak the local language. In fact, it’s usually discouraged to speak any language other than English in the classroom. However, if you do have an interest in learning Japanese, it can be a great opportunity to pick up the language while you’re over there.

If you don’t meet all these requirements, you can still apply through the form below and we’ll help to find what opportunities we can offer you.

The 8 Best Programs To Teach English In Japan (Not just the JET program!)

avatar icon

Discover the 8 best programs to teach English in Japan in order to broaden your options when teaching English abroad.

Japan is of the most popular destinations for teach abroad programs and it doesn’t take a genius to figure out why.

The West has been obsessing over Japanese culture since time immemorial.

From robots to anime to pokémon to geishas to Shinto shrines to Final Fantasy to Studio freakin’ Ghibli to…okay, you get the idea.

Ever heard of a weeaboo ? Well, it means someone who has taken their love of Japanese culture a little too far (it’s intended to be derogatory, but it sounds too cute to feel that way).

Anyway, the fact is we love Japan!

And as a result, lots of English speakers flock there to teach conversational and business English.

Despite the prevalence of weeaboos among us, few teachers seem to know that much about what program options exist for teaching English in Japan.

Have you ever done a Google search for “teach English in Japan programs?” or “how to teach English in Japan?”

Google is filled with page after page of the JET program!

You’d even be forgiven for assuming it’s one of the only ways to land a job as an English teacher in Japan.

This is simply not the case, there are plenty of different programs bringing fluent English speakers to the most sought after places in Japan, including Kyoto, Osaka, Fukuoka, and Nagoya.

We’re going to talk about the best programs out there so that you can broaden your options and finally embrace Japanese culture up close and personal.

Here are the best programs to teach English in Japan :

  • The JET program
  • JIEC Program
  • Benesse BE studio

1. The JET program

teach english in japan jet

Perfect for: Graduates across all majors and new teaching graduates.

Okay, so this couldn’t be a blog about teaching abroad programs in Japan without including JET.

Thing is, it’s not your only option, so remember that and don’t despair if you don’t get in.

There are other programs (which we’ve taken the liberty of listing our faves below) and this is not the only way to kickstart your English teaching adventure in Japan.

The JET program (also known as the JET Programme) stands for the Japan Exchange and Teaching program. It’s a Japanese government run program and one of the most reputable.

They hire English-speaking graduates from all over the world to live and teach in Japan.

It’s a mix of private and public schools and as far as salary goes, it’s one of your better options .

Positions include competitive salaries, benefits, housing allocations, and the magical flight reimbursement.

If you work with ALT, you are an Assistant Language Teacher, which means you have help in the classroom (a benefit for first year teachers who might be nervous to face a class for the first time).

Positions are available across Japan and the finer details of your contract will depend on what school you end up in.

How do I know if I qualify for the JET program?

Here are the requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • TEFL certification considered a strong asset
  • Interest in Japanese culture (you will be considered a cultural ambassador)
  • Be both mentally and physically healthy

interac teach in japan

Perfect for: Graduates across all majors and new teaching graduates who want to teach in rural Japan.

Interac is one of the biggest programs recruiting ESL teachers for Japan.

They hire all year round but tend to place teachers in the spring and fall.

Spring is their biggest season, so that might be the best time to send over your resume.

This is also an ALT (Assistant Language Program) position, so there’s a safety net in the classroom for the nervous amongst you.

One thing to note is that a lot of the positions are in rural areas and they do recommend that candidates are able to drive.

They tend to prefer applicants open to a quieter existence and willing to drive.

The positions offered in cities are crazy competitive and tend to be easier to transfer into once you’ve already taught in Japan for a year or two.

A teacher set on working in a Japanese city might do a year working with Interac Japan in the countryside to pave the way for their metropolitan dream!

Interac Japan requirements:

  • Fluent speaker of English
  • Educated through English for at least 12 years

3. Westgate

westgate japan

Perfect for: Experienced ESL teachers with a bachelor’s degree.

If you’re interested in teaching English at the university level in Japan, then the Westgate program is for you.

Universities come out on top in terms of benefits and salary so you can expect an impressive salary if you land one of these coveted positions.

On top of that, teachers can expect to receive a fully-developed curriculum.

This is in stark comparison to some university programs in other countries where you might get thrown in at the deep end with little or (*shudder*) no guidance.

Westgate offers 3–5 month contracts to prospective teachers so you can get a taster before committing to Japan for the long-haul.

In addition to all this, you don’t even need a master’s degree to apply.

Usually, all they’re looking for is an undergrad with an ESL certification and some solid teaching experience (1,000 hours of ESL classroom teaching).

Westgate also hires full-time elementary school English teachers with contracts for this program lasting 4–7 months.

They require a university degree, ESL certificate and at least 1,000 hours of teaching experience with young learners.

Westgate requirements:

  • ESL certificate
  • 1,000 hours ESL teaching experience (for elementary positions, experience must be with young learners)

4. JIEC Program

jiec japan

Perfect for: ESL teachers with a degree and 2 years of experience.

JIEC Japan generally hires ESL teachers for Japanese kindergartens, but teaching positions do exist at other levels.

It’s a good idea to keep an eye on job postings on their site as they hire all year round.

They look for ESL teachers with a Bachelor’s degree (minimum) and two years’ experience (specifically teaching ESL).

In terms of JIEC benefits, accommodation is covered and a settlement bonus is usually included, as well as a competitive salary.

Their kindergartens are usually private and so hours can vary including both weekends and weekday evenings.

JIEC Japan requirements:

  • 2 years of ESL teaching experience

5. NOVA Japan

Nova teach in Japan

Perfect for: Fluent English speakers with no experience.

NOVA Japan is a private English school that offers all sorts of opportunities for ESL teachers in Japan because they are considered a one-stop shop for learning English as a second language.

From one-to-one conversation classes with business professionals to more traditional classroom-based learning.

There are over 250 branches so you could end up teaching anywhere!

One of the advantages of this program is that all the teachers in the school are fluent English speakers so you will have a ready-made expat community in place.

The benefits are awesome with teachers having their accommodation sorted, flights reimbursed and a guaranteed number of lessons in their contract.

Other perks of the job include Japanese lessons with a fluent Japanese speaker (at a discounted rate) so those of you hoping to speak the local lingo will be taken care of!

Nova Japan requirements:

  • No teaching experience required
  • Fluent English speaker

working for gaba japan

Perfect for: TEFL certified graduates across all majors.

If you’re an English teacher who wants to focus on 1-to-1 language lessons, Gaba (an eikaiwa , or English conversation, chain of schools) is your best bet.

Specializing in adult learners, Gaba gives you the chance to be really creative.

No two lessons will be the same as the focus is on a custom learning experience for all students.

Gaba has their own methodology and training is provided.

The best part is that this program is incredibly flexible, allowing teachers to choose their own schedules and control their income.

Monthly earnings will vary, but the going rate is 1500 yen per 40-minute lesson with bonuses in place for high-performing teachers.

The one thing to note is that teachers are treated as independent contractors so they will be responsible for their own flights/accommodation, etc.

This is definitely a great opportunity for those teachers that enjoy their freedom and aren’t fazed by the idea of setting themselves up in Japan.

Gaba requirements:

  • Fluent English
  • ESL qualification (TEFL certified)
  • Experience in a corporate environment

7. Benesse BE Studio

Benesse BE studio

Perfect for: Graduates across all majors.

Benesse BE studio provides exciting English learning programs for children in over 1,700 schools across Japan. The youngest student is 9 months old. The majority of students are Japanese students under the age of 7.

Teachers will enjoy the fun and interactive activity-based lessons just as much as the students.

Class sizes are kept small (up to 8 students) to allow for a highly engaging communicative environment for young learners to be exposed to and exercise authentic English communication skills.

Teachers are supported with a comprehensive training program and relocation/work visa assistance.

Benesse BE studio requirements:

ecc teach in japan

Perfect for: Experienced ESL instructors and licensed educators.

With 188 schools across Japan, the ECC Japan currently employs over 400 overseas teachers and they’re on the lookout for a whole lot more.

ECC schools in Japan are immersive English environments where students are encouraged to speak English as much as possible.

From children to adults, they offer a wide range of classes, so teachers tend to get a choice of who they want to teach.

It’s worth noting that this is a private language school and teaching hours will usually be evenings and weekends.

This program recruits globally, so you have the chance to speak to someone in person before flying across the world.

Check out the ECC jobs page for more details on working for ECC Japan, including ECC requirements, the application process, teaching locations, salaries and more.

How Much Does an English Teacher Make in Japan?

P ursuing a career as an English teacher is one of the fastest ways to live and work in Japan—provided you meet the requirements. However, the drawbacks to this convenience are the industry’s competitiveness and relatively low pay.

According to insights from Japanese job boards and our own GaijinPot Jobs , the average English teacher salary in Japan is approximately ¥280,000 per month , totaling around ¥3.38 million annually (roughly $21,763).

Let’s look at the recent trends and compare English teacher salaries in Japan.

Average Starting English Teacher Salaries

Not all English teachers are the same. An English teacher from the JET programme will share some, but not all, the same experiences as an Assistant Language Teacher (ALT) hired through a haken (dispatch company). Likewise, a full-time university English teacher with a doctorate will earn much more than an English teacher at an eikaiwa (English conversation schools).

Here are the average monthly salaries a new full-time teacher can expect in Japan.

+---------------------------+

JET Programme ¥280,000 ¥330,000

Direct Hire ¥250,000 ¥300,000

Dispatch Companies ¥220,000 ¥280,000

Eikaiwa ¥220,000 ¥280,000

Business English Schools ¥300,000 ¥375,000

Universities ¥400,000 ¥600,000

Note: These salaries are before taxes. The salaries of English business school and university positions may look the best for aspiring English teachers. However, it’s important to note that these salaries are for full-time employees, which are scarce and fiercely competitive. You’ll likely find part-time opportunities, typically offering hourly rates ranging from ¥3,000 to ¥5,000.

What Does The Jet Programme Offer?

The Japan Exchange and Teaching Programme (JET) offers a unique opportunity to teach in Japan and experience the culture, all with a dedicated support system. They will even pay for your plane ticket. The JET Programme recruits foreigners to work as Assistant Language Teachers (ALTs) in public schools, spanning elementary, junior and high school levels. ALTs are native-level English speakers who work with Japanese teaching staff in classrooms.

While most candidates will be from outside Japan, you can apply for the JET programme while living in Japan ) via the Japanese embassy or consulate in your home country. It’s a competitive application process. The organization receives around 5,000 applications—only 1,000 are accepted.

To break down the annual salaries provided for JET Programme participants into monthly figures:

・ First Year : ¥280,000 per month (¥3.36 million annually)

・ Second Year : ¥300,000 per month (¥3.6 million annually)

・ Third Year : ¥325,000 per month (¥3.9 million annually)

・ Fourth/ Fifth Years : ¥330,000 per month (¥3.96 million annually)

JET Programme Vs. Other ALT Jobs

Let’s consider different English Teaching salaries in Japan. While JET, eikaiwa teachers, direct hire and dispatch ALT jobs are all close regarding salaries, there are some very big differences. For starters, the JET programme is more difficult to get into than a job at an eikaiwa, and with it comes tons of benefits most eikaiwa teachers can only dream about.

JET benefits include:

・ Airfare Coverage: JETs have their airfare to and from Japan covered.

・ Language Learning Access: They receive free online Japanese language learning resources.

・ Skills Training: Translation and interpretation skills training are provided.

・ Grants for Certification: Grants are available for TEFL certification and the JLPT.

・ Mental Health Support: A mental health counseling service is offered.

・ Career Fair Opportunities: A career fair in February helps participants find post-JET employment.

・ Insurance Coverage: Participants are covered by JET Programme Accident Insurance.

・ Insurance: JETs are enrolled in National Health, Employment and Pension Insurance schemes.

JET Vs. Other ALT Jobs

One drawback of JET is limited contract renewals, creating uncertainty about long-term employment. Participation is capped at five years, and placements vary widely, with some in rural areas. This can lead to immersion or isolation. Also, salaries remain fixed regardless of location, potentially impacting living expenses.

On the other hand, direct hire, dispatch ALTs, and eikaiwa teachers can potentially earn more than JETs, especially direct hires. They have more control over placement and enjoy flexibility in contract length and renewal options. However, many eikaiwa and dispatch jobs are limited to one-year contracts.

In theory, Japanese law is that at five years, a company must hire you as a seishain (a regular permanent employee), with all the benefits and security that come with it. However, some companies may evade this by not renewing contracts or transferring employees. Civil servants and government employees are exempt from this rule. So, if you teach at a city position, you won’t benefit from this regulation unless the employer voluntarily offers you seishain status.

・ JET Programme Drawbacks:

・Limited contract renewals, leading to uncertainty about long-term employment.

・Participation is capped at five years.

・Placements vary widely, potentially leading to immersion or isolation.

・Fixed salaries, regardless of location, may impact living expenses.

・ Advantages of Direct Hire, Dispatch ALTs and Eikaiwa Teachers:

・Potential for higher earnings, especially for direct hires.

・Greater control over placement and flexibility in contract terms.

・Many eikaiwa and dispatch jobs offer limited one-year contracts.

・ Japanese Employment Law:

・In theory, companies must hire employees as regular permanent workers after five years.

・Some companies may avoid this obligation through contract non-renewal or employee transfer.

・Civil servants and government employees are exempt from this rule.

Dispatch Company (Haken) Salaries

Dispatch companies (think Interac, Borderlink and Heart) hire ALTs to teach in public schools throughout Japan. Interviews are typically conducted online, making the hiring process more accessible. Overseas hires are often placed in rural areas compared to local hires. Thus, keep an open mind about placement options if your goal is to work in Japan. With teaching experience, you can apply for positions elsewhere in Japan with a valid working visa.

Dispatch companies typically offer lower starting salaries than other teaching options, averaging around ¥220,000 to ¥240,000 before taxes. Moreover, ALTs with dispatch companies may receive prorated salaries during school holidays, unlike JET or direct hire contract ALTs, who often receive full salaries during breaks.

・ Starting Salary : Typically ¥220,000 to ¥240,000 before taxes

・ Easier To Get: Dispatch teaching jobs are typically easier to find.

・ Placement Considerations: Overseas hires may be placed in rural areas, so flexibility is key.

・ Support Services: Dispatch companies may assist with relocation, visas, housing and enrollment in essential services.

・ Training and Orientation: There is typically a paid training period.

・ Holiday Salary Considerations: ALTs with dispatch companies may experience prorated salaries during school holidays.

Direct Hire Salaries

・ Higher Salaries : Typically starting around ¥280,000 per month (no dispatch company’s management fee).

・ Better Contracts : Contracts (should) comply more with labor regulations regarding holiday entitlements, pensions and healthcare contributions.

・ Stability : More stability as employment is directly tied to a Board of Education (BOE).

・ Considerations:

・ Less Flexibility : Dispatch positions have less flexibility (contracts, hours, placement, etc.)

Direct hire refers to being directly employed by a Board of Education (BOE), bypassing placement through a dispatch company or the JET Programme. Pursuing direct-hire positions may appeal to ALTs considering a long-term stay in Japan.

Direct-hire ALTs often enjoy higher salaries, typically about 30% more than those hired through dispatch companies, averaging around ¥280,000 per month . Contracts for direct-hire ALTs are designed to align with labor regulations, ensuring your rights and benefits are protected. They are similar to the contracts offered by the JET Programme.

Direct-hire positions offer high job security. In contrast, dispatch companies may lose contracts with certain cities, potentially leaving ALTs without work. By choosing a direct-hire position, you can enjoy a more stable and secure career path in Japan. However, direct-hire jobs may lack flexibility.

English Conversation School (Eikaiwa) Salaries

・ Full-Time Salary: Typically ¥275,000 to ¥280,000 for full-time instructors.

・ Pay Per Lesson: Typically ¥1,430 to ¥1,930 for a 40-minute class, with bonuses for peak hours.

・ Independent Schools: Salaries vary based on location, potentially aligning with local wages.

・ Flexibility: Eikaiwa jobs suit those seeking part-time or flexible schedules.

・ Considerations: Full-time job seekers should ensure sufficient classes for a stable income.

Eikaiwa are private English conversation schools and cater to the general public. Most classes are held after typical work or school hours, often in the evenings or on weekends.

Major Eikaiwa chains such as ECC, Aeon, and Berlitz typically offer monthly salaries between ¥275,000 to ¥280,000 for full-time instructors working around 38 hours per week. In contrast, other chains like NOVA and GABA often pay based on lessons taught, with bonuses for peak-hour classes or high customer satisfaction. Typically, between ¥1,430 to ¥1,930 per 40-minute lesson.

Smaller independent English language schools may offer salaries in line with local wages, potentially varying based on location. While salaries outside major urban centers like Tokyo may be lower, the lower cost of living could balance the earnings.

Eikaiwa positions can be attractive for those seeking part-time or flexible schedules, allowing teachers to balance teaching with other pursuits. However, individuals seeking full-time employment should confirm that their contract guarantees sufficient classes to meet their financial needs, as a “flexible schedule” may not always equate to consistent income.

Average Eikaiwa Salaries in Japan

Here are the most well-known eikaiwa in Japan and their base salaries.

ABC English ¥275,000 ~ ¥280,000

AEON Corporation of Japan ¥275,000

Business Teaching Salaries

Business English classes , funded by companies for their staff, offer higher pay rates despite fewer teaching hours. Typically conducted in groups, these classes cover work-related tasks like email writing and phone calls, with advanced students seeking assistance with presentations.

While some schools prioritize teachers with business experience, hourly rates for business English teachers surpass those of other English teachers due to corporate willingness to pay more. Hourly rates average around ¥3,800 , primarily in major cities like Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto. Most starting salaries at a business English school start around ¥300,000 .

Some popular business English Schools are:

Berkeley House Language Center ¥270,000 ~ ¥290,000

Tokyo Center for Languages and Culture

University English Teacher Salaries

・ Qualifications: Short-term instructors need a degree and teaching experience. Long-term faculty require a Master’s degree or Ph.D. with research experience.

・ Salary Disparities: Directly employed tutors earn high salaries, while short-term English instructors through dispatch companies may earn less, starting from ¥270,000 to ¥280,000 per month.

・ Directly Employed: They earn more, typically between ¥400,000 to ¥600,000 per month, needing advanced qualifications in English, linguistics, or education, along with research experience.

Teaching at a university offers exceptional career advancement opportunities. Short-term instructors typically require a degree and teaching experience, preferably in EFL or ESL, with teaching qualifications desirable. Long-term faculty members need a Master’s degree or Ph.D., research publications and university-level teaching experience.

University teaching is recognized for its high salaries, especially for tutors and lecturers directly employed by universities. However, earnings for short-term English instructors at Japanese universities, often hired through dispatch companies like Westgate Corporation, are comparatively lower. These instructors can expect monthly earnings from ¥270,000 for less experienced teachers, with contracts lasting three to five months.

Directly employed university faculty members receive even higher salaries. They typically require advanced qualifications such as a master’s degree or Ph.D. in English, linguistics, or education, along with published research. However, you can expect ¥400,000 ~ ¥600,000 per month for such an esteemed position.

How Many Hours Will I Actually Teach?

The typical number of hours English teachers in Japan spend teaching in the classroom varies depending on their position and employer. However, a common range for classroom teaching hours is between 20 to 25 hours per week for full-time positions. This can vary based on school policies, grade levels, and curriculum requirements.

Outside of classroom teaching hours, English teachers often engage in various activities such as lesson planning, grading assignments, attending meetings with colleagues and school administrators, participating in extracurricular activities or school events, and providing additional support to students needing assistance with English language learning. At an eikaiwa, you might even be cleaning on a slow day.

The difference in responsibilities between direct hire, JET Programme participants, and other ALTs can influence the distribution of classroom teaching hours and additional duties. For example:

What’s The Best Teaching Job in Japan?

Before signing an English teaching contract in Japan, understand how the company calculates your scheduled working hours. Like in Japan’s General Union’s article , “When is a 45-hour week actually a 29.5-hour week?”, some language schools manipulate workers’ schedules to keep them below the 30-hour threshold, thereby avoiding pension contributions.

For instance, schools may only count actual lesson time, neglecting preparation periods before, after or between classes. All residents in Japan must enroll in the national pension system . Failure to enroll may result in mandatory make-up payments. For more information, refer to our Japan 101 section about Health Insurance in Japan .

Here is what you should consider before your next English teaching job hunt:

・ Consider Your Goals: Choose a job that aligns with your objectives and situation. Each field offers its advantages and appeal.

・ Full-Time Positions: If you’re seeking a full-time job with visa sponsorship, options include English conversation schools, ALT positions or university roles.

・ Overseas Applicants: The JET program offers generous benefits, including airfare, skills training, and services, along with a competitive salary, to applicants from overseas.

・ In-Japan Applicants: If you’re already in Japan and need visa sponsorship, consider full-time positions at major eikaiwa chains or in business English, offering around ¥250,000 ~ ¥300,000 a month.

・ Part-Time Opportunities: Teachers seeking part-time work can explore options in business English or English conversation schools, offering flexibility to pursue other interests.

・ University Teaching: Short-term university teaching can also provide a stable income, averaging around ¥270,000 monthly. Faculty positions at universities offer high pay (up to ¥600,000 per month) and career prospects.

・ Career Transition: If English teaching isn’t your long-term plan , consider a flexible teaching job that will give you time to work on other things and build a resume.
