IELTS Academic Reading Test consists of three sections or reading passages (between 700 to 950 words each) that you’ll have to answer in a time frame of 60 minutes . There is a set of 12-to-14 questions in each passage and this makes a total of 40 questions in the Reading examination.

Each question carries 1 mark and there is still NO negative marking in 2024 .

Practically, it is extremely difficult to read and understand every line of the passage when you’re racing against time . That’s why, scanning, skimming, predicting, and eliminating wrong answer techniques are quintessential to quickly finding the right answers to these questions.

You are allowed to mark and make notes in your reading question booklet or you can highlight any text in the passage in Computer-deliver IELTS. Remember, You have to write your answers in the given time only i.e. 1 hour.

Unlike Listening, NO extra time will be given to transfer the answers on the answer sheet . In Academic Reading, the three reading passages generally vary in difficulty with first passage being the easiest while third is comparatively difficult. The questions require candidates to find information from the passages, and one of the passages may need interpretation of the writer’s opinions.

Preparing for your IELTS Academic test

We want you to do well in your test. To help you get ready, here are some sample tests for the Academic test.

Listening and Speaking tests are the same for IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training, but the Reading and Writing tests are different.

With these official practice materials you can:

IELTS Academic - paper sample tests

Listening (30 minutes) .

The Listening test is the same for both IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training and consists of four recorded monologues and conversations. The following IELTS Listening sample tasks are to be used with the Answer Sheet and MP3 audio files and/or transcripts. Each answer sheet indicates which recording to listen to, or if a transcript is provided.

Academic Reading (60 minutes)

Texts for the Academic Reading test are taken from books, journals, magazines and newspapers.

A variety of tasks is used, including: multiple-choice questions, identifying information, identifying writer’s views/claims, matching information, matching headings, matching features, matching sentence endings, sentence completion, summary completion, note completion, table completion, flow-chart completion, diagram label completion, short-answer questions.

Academic Writing (60 minutes) 

The Academic Writing test consists of two writing tasks of 150 words and 250 words. In Task 1, you are asked to describe some visual information (graph/table/chart/diagram). You need to write 150 words in about 20 minutes. In Task 2 you are presented with a point of view or argument or problem. You need to write your response in 250 words in about 40 minutes.

Speaking (11–14 minutes)

In the Speaking test, you have a discussion with a certified examiner. It is interactive and as close to a real-life situation as a test can get. There are three parts to the test and each part fulfils a specific function in terms of interaction pattern, task input and test taker output. In Part 1, you answer questions about yourself and your family. In Part 2, you speak about a topic. In Part 3, you have a longer discussion on the topic. The Speaking test is the same for both IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training. Each of the three parts is designed to test a different aspect of your communication ability.

Academic Writing (60 minutes)

Can you take a free IELTS practice test for IELTS on Computer?

The IELTS on Computer is a relatively new test format. But it’s becoming more and more widely available. If IELTS on Computer is an option for you, then you’ll want to practice for the computer-based exam.

There is no full official practice test for IELTS on Computer just yet. But right now, you can see some sample practice questions on IELTS.org’s IELTS on Computer practice page . And you can go through additional official IELTS on Computer practice questions on the IELTS IDP website . Between these two resources, you’ll have something that’s roughly equivalent to a full IELTS practice test.

Cambridge’s IELTS Sample Test PDF Archive (Writing)

Cambridge, one of the other official sponsors of the IELTS, offers some practice materials that are a bit different. Unlike the other official websites for the IELTS, Cambridge specializes in print books of IELTS prep, not IELTS sample test PDFs or other digital resources.

But Cambridge does offer free IELTS sample test materials, excerpted from their books. To see the links to all of that content, you’ll need to register for the Cambridge publishing website, log in, and find the IELTS content in their menu. I’ve put together detailed instructions on how to do that in my post on the four main official IELTS websites and how to use them .

The Importance of Full-Length IELTS Tests

Full IELTS practice tests are a key part of your IELTS exam preparation, especially if you want to get a top band score. You absolutely must do some full test practice, so you can have a realistic preview of your test day experience, and get a sense of how hard the IELTS is for you at your current skill level. Studying for the IELTS in a cost-effective way is also important. And as you can see, there are many free options to practice those language skills in full online tests.

So I would encourage you to use a free IELTS practice test PDF or two in your IELTS study plan—perhaps as part of one the IELTS study schedules Magoosh offers . (We even specifically list this article as a resource in our one week IELTS study plan .)

Academic Reading Samples

Academic Reading Test has three sections or three reading passages that you'll have to answer in an hour. Each reading passage will come with 13-14 questions and three reading passages will have 40 questions (sometimes 41) in total. Each question carries 1 mark. For each correct answer, you will get one mark.

You can't read every single line of the reading passages and then answer the questions as time will be against you then. You need to use scanning, skimming, guessing, eliminating wrong answer etc techniques to find the answers to these questions. You are allowed to mark and make notes in your reading question booklet, but you will have to write your answers on the answer sheet. No extra time will be given to transfer the answer. Each section of the Academic Reading Test contains one long text or reading passage. These texts/passages are taken from books, journals, magazines and newspapers. They have been written for a non-specialist audience and are on academic topics of general interest. If texts contain technical terms, then a simple glossary is usually provided.

In order to get a high score for the Reading part you should know the format of the tasks and practise doing them within the time limit. It is important to train to complete all 40 questions in 60 minutes because in the real exam you will not have more time.

When you start preparing for the reading part, it is ok to have more time for the tasks. You should tune into the format and understand what strategies to use. Then, when you feel more confident you can  do one reading section within 20 minutes It is also important to get used to reading texts similar to the exam ones:

Is Photography Art?

This may seem a pointless question today. Surrounded as we are by thousands of photographs, most of us take for granted that, in addition to supplying information and seducing customers, camera images also serve as decoration, afford spiritual enrichment, and provide significant insights into the passing scene. But in the decades following the discovery of photography, this question reflected the search for ways to fit the mechanical medium into the traditional schemes of artistic expression. The much-publicized pronouncement by painter Paul Delaroche that the daguerreotype * signalled the end of painting is perplexing because this clever artist also forecasted the usefulness of the medium for graphic artists in a letter written in 1839. Nevertheless, it is symptomatic of the swing between the outright rejection and qualified acceptance of the medium that was fairly typical of the artistic establishment. Discussion of the role of photography in art was especially spirited in France, where the internal policies of the time had created a large pool of artists, but it was also taken up by important voices in England. In both countries, public interest in this topic was a reflection of the belief that national stature and achieFrom the maze of conflicting statements and heated articles on the subject, three main positions about the potential of camera art emerged.

The simplest, entertained by many painters and a section of the public, was that photographs should not be considered ‘art’ because they were made with a mechanical device and by physical and chemical phenomena instead of by human hand and spirit; to some, camera images seemed to have more in common with fabric produced by machinery in a mill than with handmade creations fired by inspiration. The second widely held view, shared by painters, some photographers, and some critics, was that photographs would be useful to art but should not be considered equal in creativeness to drawing and painting. Lastly, by assuming that the process was comparable to other techniques such as etching and lithography, a fair number of individuals realized that camera images were or could be as significant as handmade works of art and that they might have a positive influence on the arts and culture in general. Artists reacted to photography in various ways. Many portrait painters – miniaturists in particular – who realized that photography represented the ‘handwriting on the wall’ became involved with daguerreotyping or paper photography to save their careers; some incorporated it with painting, while others renounced painting altogether. Still other painters, the most prominent among them the French painter, Jean- Auguste-Dominique Ingres, began almost immediately to use photography to make a record of their output and also to provide themselves with source material for poses and backgrounds, vigorously denying the same time its influence on their vision or its claims as art.

The view that photographs might be worthwhile to artists was enunciated in considerable detail by Lacan and Francis Wey. The latter, an art and literary critic, who eventually recognised that camera images could be inspired as well as informative, suggested that they would lead to greater naturalness in the graphic depiction of anatomy, clothing, likeness, expression, and landscape. By studying photographs, true artists, he claimed, would be relieved of menial tasks and become free to devote themselves to the more important spiritual aspects of their work. Wey left unstated what the incompetent artist might do as an alternative, but according to the influential French critic and poet Charles Baudelaire, writing in response to an exhibition of photography in 1859, lazy and untalented painters would become photographers. Fired by a belief in art as an imaginative embodiment of cultivated ideas and dreams, Baudelaire regarded photography as ‘a very humble servant of art and science’; a medium largely unable to transcend ‘external reality’. For this critic, photography was linked with ‘the great industrial madness’ of the time, which in his eyes exercised disastrous consequences on the spiritual qualities of life and art.

Eugene Delacroix was the most prominent of the French artists who welcomed photography as a help-mate but recognized its limitations. Regretting that ‘such a wonderful invention’ had arrived so late in his lifetime, he still took lessons in daguerreotyping, and both commissioned and collected photographs. Delacroix’s enthusiasm for the medium can be sensed in a journal entry noting that if photographs were used as they should be, an artist might ‘raise himself to heights that we do not yet know’. The question of whether the photograph was a document or art aroused interest in England also. The most important statement on this matter was an unsigned article that concluded that while photography had a role to play, it should not be ‘constrained’ into ‘competition’ with art; a more stringent viewpoint led critic Philip Gilbert Hamerton to dismiss camera images as ‘narrow in range, emphatic in assertion, telling one truth for ten falsehoods’. These writers reflected the opposition of a section of the cultural elite in England and France to the ‘cheapening of art’ which the growing acceptance and purchase of camera pictures by the middle class represented. Technology made photographic images a common sight in the shop windows of Regent Street and Piccadilly in London and the commercial boulevards of Paris. In London, for example, there were at the time some 130 commercial establishments where portraits, landscapes, and photographic reproductions of works of art could be bought. This appeal to the middle class convinced the elite that photographs would foster a desire for realism instead of idealism, even though some critics recognized that the work of individual photographers might display an uplifting style and substance that was consistent with the defining characteristics of art.

Here are the 42 questions on the juror questionnaire in Trump's hush money case

The search for 18 fair and impartial jurors will begin next week in former President Donald Trump's first criminal trial.

Trump faces a 34-count felony indictment alleging that he falsified New York business records in order to conceal damaging information to influence the 2016 presidential election. Monday kicks off jury selection for the trial that is expected to last about six weeks — even as Trump campaigns to be president once again. Trump has pleaded not guilty to the charges.

In total, 42 questions will be used to select 12 jurors and six alternates for the first-ever criminal trial featuring a former or sitting president. And this will be Trump's first appearance in a trial since winning enough delegates to receive the GOP nomination.

Still, jurors will not be asked for whom they have voted or will vote, nor will lawyers question them about their political affiliations or campaign contributions. New York Judge Juan Merchan, who is overseeing the trial, believes those views will be made clear through other questions.

Jurors will be asked to identify the online media, news and social media programs they use, podcasts they listen to and if they have ever considered themselves a supporter or a member of any of six white supremacist and extremist groups — including the QAnon movement, Proud Boys and Antifa.

They will also be asked about their business and political relationships with the former president and New York business mogul. Lawyers will ask if prospective jurors, a relative or a close friend ever worked for any company or organization that is owned or run by Trump or anyone in his family. And they will be asked if they have ever attended a rally or campaign event for Trump, volunteered for his campaign or been a part of any "anti-Trump" efforts.

These have all been questions similarly asked in Trump's previous jury trials in Manhattan.
