Unseen Passage for Class 7 English – Passage 2

Watching is meditation. What you watch is irrelevant. You can watch the trees, you can watch the river, you can watch the clouds, you can watch children playing around. Watching is meditation. What you watch is not the point; the object is not the point. The quality of observation, the quality of being aware and alert – that’s what meditation is. Remember one thing; meditation means awareness. Whatsoever you do with awareness is meditation. Action is not the question, but the quality that you bring to your action is. Walking can be a meditation if you walk alert. Sitting can be a meditation if you sit alert. Listening to the birds can be a meditation if you listen with awareness. Just listening to the inner voice of your mind can be a meditation if you remain alert and watchful. The whole point is one should not move in sleep. Then whatever you do is meditation.

The first step in awareness is to be very watchful of your body. Slowly, one becomes alert about each gesture, and each movement. And as you become aware, a miracle starts happening; many things that you used to do before simply disappear; your body becomes more relaxed, your body becomes more attuned. A deep peace starts prevailing even in your body; subtle music pulsates in your body. Then, start becoming aware of your thoughts; the same has to be done with emotions; you will be surprised at what goes on inside you. If you write down whatever is going on at any moment, you are in for a great surprise. You will not believe that this is what is going on inside you. And ten minutes later, read it – you will see a mad mind inside! Because we are not aware, this whole madness goes on running like an undercurrent. It affects whatsoever you are doing; it affects everything. And the sum total of it is going to be your life! So this madman has to be changed. And the miracle of awareness is that you need not do anything except just become aware. The very phenomenon of watching it changes it. Slowly the madman disappears, and slowly the thoughts start falling into a certain pattern; their chaos is no more; they become more of the cosmos. And then again, a deeper peace prevails. And when your body and your mind are at peace, you will see that they are attuned to each other, too; there is a bridge. Now they are not running in different directions; they are not riding different horses. For the first time, there is an accord, and that accord helps immensely to work on the third step, which is becoming aware of your feelings, emotions, and moods. That is the subtlest layer and the most difficult, but if you can be aware of the thoughts, then it is just one more step. A little more intense awareness is needed, and you start reflecting on your moods, your emotions and your feelings. Once you are aware of all these three, they all become joined into one phenomenon. And when all these three are one, functioning together perfectly, humming together, you can feel the music of all the three; they have become an orchestra – then the fourth happens, which you cannot do. It happens on accord. It is a gift from the whole; it is a reward for those who have done these three. And the fourth is the ultimate awareness that makes one awakened. One becomes aware of one’s awareness – that is the fourth. That makes a Buddha awakened. And only in that awakening does one come to know what bliss is. The body knows pleasure, the mind knows happiness, the heart knows joy, and the fourth knows bliss. Bliss is the goal of sannyas, of being a seeker, and awareness is the path towards it.

The important thing is that you are watchful, that you have not forgotten to watch, that you are watching………watching……watching. Slowly as the watcher becomes more and more solid, stable, and unwavering, a transformation happens. The things that you were watching disappeared. For the first time, the watcher itself becomes watched, and the observer itself becomes observed. You have come home.

Answer the following questions based on the passage:

Q1) The whole journey of watching follows a particular order. Arrange the following options in their correct order. (1 Mark)

i. Awareness of thoughts

ii. Awareness of moods

iii. Awareness of one’s awareness

iv. Awareness of the body

A. iv, iii, ii, i

B. iv, ii, i, iii

C. iv, i, ii, iii

D. i, iii, ii, iv

Q2) From the passage, which of the following statements are true in respect of ultimate awareness? (1 Mark)

i. Constant practice helps us to achieve ultimate awareness. ii. All those who can watch their moods can attain ultimate awareness.

iii. It is a conscious outcome of our practice of watching

iv. Ultimate awareness is bliss.

A. All four statements are correct.

B. Only three statements are correct.

C. Only two statements are correct.

D. Only one statement is correct.

Unseen Passage for Class 7 English – Passage 3

Nepal, a small, mountainous country tucked between India and China, may seem completely foreign to many Americans. Cows walk down busy streets unharmed, 24 different languages are spoken, and people eat two meals of rice and lentils every day. Nepali holidays, many of which are related to the Hindu religion, can seem especially bizarre to Americans unfamiliar with the culture. However, if we look beyond how others celebrate to consider the things they are celebrating, we find surprising similarities to our own culture.

The biggest holiday in Nepal is Dashain, a ten-day festival for the Hindu goddess Durga that takes place in September or October. According to Hindu beliefs, Durga defeated the evil demons of the world. To thank the goddess, people visit temples in her honour and sacrifice goats or sheep as offerings. Throughout the year, most Nepalis do not eat much meat because it is expensive, but Dashain is a time to enjoy meat every day. Children fly colourful, homemade kites during Dashain. People also construct enormous bamboo swings on street corners and in parks. Every evening people gather at these swings and take turns swinging. Nepalis say that by swinging, people can relieve the earth of their weight, if only for a few minutes out of the year. Dashain is a time for people to eat good food, relax, and enjoy themselves!

Aside from eating and enjoying themselves, during Dashain, people also receive blessings from their elders. Schools and offices shut down so people can travel to be with their families. Reuniting with family reminds people of the importance of kindness, respect, and forgiveness. People also clean and decorate their homes for Dashain. And, like many holidays in the United States, it is a time for shopping. Children and adults alike get new clothes for the occasion. People express appreciation for all that they have while looking forward to good fortune and peace in the year to come.

During American holidays, people may not sacrifice goats or soar on bamboo swings, but we do often travel to be with family members and take time off work or school to relax. No matter how we celebrate, many people around the world spend their holidays honouring family, reflecting on their blessings, and hoping for good fortune in the future.

Answer the following questions carefully after reading the above passage:

Q1) According to the passage, Hindus believe that the goddess Durga (1 Mark)

A. sacrifices goats and sheep

B. defeated the evil demons of the world

C. visits temples

D. enjoys meat every day

Q2) As used in paragraph 1, bizarre most nearly means? (1 Mark)

A. unbelievable

Q3) Both the colourful kites and bamboo swings are used as examples of? (1 Mark)

A. ways people relax and enjoy themselves during Dashain.

B. things people honour and reflect on during Dashain.

C. offerings to the goddess Durga.

D. ways people reunite with family during Dashain.

Q4) Which of the following sentences from the passage best indicates why the author thinks Nepal would seem very foreign to many Americans? (1 Mark)

A. “Cows walk down busy streets unharmed, 24 different languages are spoken, and people eat two meals of rice and lentils every day.”

B. “Every evening, people gather at these swings and take turns swinging.”

C. “People also clean and decorate their homes for Dashain.”

D. “During American holidays, people may not sacrifice goats or soar on bamboo swings, but we do often travel to be with family members and take time off work or school to relax.”

Q5) The author suggests that although people in different cultures celebrate holidays differently, one similarity is that many people? (1 Mark)

A. ask for blessings from their elders during holidays

B. agree that holidays reveal a lot about a culture

C. believe that holidays must be celebrated

D. think of holidays as a time to spend with their families

What reading skills do 7th graders have.

7th grade is a crucial stage in a student's developmental cycle. They have recently finished elementary school and shifted to middle school, where the pressure has increased significantly, and they are pushed to improve constantly. In 7th grade, students are expected to learn from and utilize the information they received in prior grades by implementing it in the present time. Reading is an extremely important tool for 7th graders, which helps them in future endeavors and makes them fast learners. Continue reading this blog to understand what reading skills 7th graders should have to help them reach their true potential.

Identification and Understanding of Literary Work

As 7th Graders, students should be able to identify the main ideas of a text and explain how the narrator contributes to the themes within the text. They should be able to receive the message the author delivers and discuss various literary works by different authors. Students are expected to read different genres and review significant literary pieces.

Reading Comprehension

An essential reading skill for 7th graders is reading comprehension. Students are expected to analyze literary pieces and comprehend what the text represents. They should be able to contrast and compare one literary piece with another by looking at the tone, vocabulary, tense, punctuation, rhythm, rhyme, and sentence structure used. An important part of reading comprehension is understanding what the author means and then linking the new information with what the student already knows. For instance, if a 7th grader is reading a text about aircraft accidents, they are expected to connect the authors' message with information they already have about airplanes, significant crashes, or the dangers of flying. This integration of new information with previous knowledge through reading is reading comprehension, and that is a reading skill 7th graders have.

Discuss Literary Work Orally and in Writing

A key indicator of reading done right is when students can discuss the concept behind literary work with their peers and teachers. It allows them to use their own words to explain the text's main ideas, which helps retain that information. In both oral and written discussions, 7th graders should be able to describe a text and elaborate on its meaning using direct quotes or facts learned when reading. When students use facts or quotes from a text to support their point of view, they retain that information with greater ease due to practice.

Form a Personal Opinion

A vital reading skill for 7th graders is the ability to form a personal opinion based on the text that they have read by other authors. 7th graders are expected to construct their own opinion about the text separate from the narrator's perspective when reading. Within their opinion, they can point out whether they liked the text, how it can be improved, what they agree with within the text, and the core components of the text that they can and will use for future reference. It becomes easier to learn and retain information when you take the time to form an opinion about it; as students, forming a personal opinion about any text enables them to read between the lines and truly understand each literary piece.   Utilize Text

It is crucial to focus when reading, so the information provided in the text can be used in real life. 7th graders are expected to utilize the text and use the facts or quotes they've learned in writing. When students are able to use the text they've read in their writing, it becomes ingrained in their memory. 7th graders should be able to write about and use the material they've read in future writing assignments. For instance, if a student has read a book on emotional wellness, they should be able to incorporate the information they've been exposed to in their assignment on why mental health is important.

It is essential to read a text several times so that you have a thorough understanding of the overall theme before attempting to respond to the questions. Once the paragraph has been understood, it will be simple to respond to the questions.

Oscar Wilde, a giant with long hair, a bottle green fur-lined overcoat, and a spherical seal skin hat on his head, arrived in New York on January 2nd, 1882, as part of a lecture tour. He was surrounded by reporters who asked him pointless questions like how he wanted his eggs fried, much to his annoyance. How were his fingernails cut? What temperature did he prefer for his bath? His responses exhibited a complete lack of interest.

However, the customs officer greeted him with the typical question when he came ashore: "Have you anything to declare?" No, I have nothing to declare (pause) but my genius, Wilde retorted. Few statements have ever spread as swiftly and extensively across history as that one.

Questions of Passage 1:

Describe two characteristics of Oscar's physical look in New York.

What brought him to New York?

Find a word in the passage that describes a person's extraordinary abilities.

Answers of Passage 1:

How do they support themselves?

What sort of things do they enjoy doing in their free time?

Specify the two kinds of houses that Eskimos people inhabit.

Find a word that describes an agreement in the passage.

Answers of Passage 2:

Although they are short, the Eskimos have strong shoulders and legs.

Igloos, or snow huts, are available. However, they typically reside in homes made of wood and grass.

Class 7 English Grammar Chapter 24 Comprehension

comprehension worksheet class 7

Class 7 English Grammar Chapter 24 Comprehension or Unseen Passage. Comprehension is the noun form of Comprehend. To comprehend means to grasp mentally in order to have full understanding of a thing. Comprehension is a person’s power of understanding a given unseen passage. It is a very light exercise. The students should first grasp the sense of the passage, fully understand the nature of the questions and then answer the questions in their own words. The answers should be brief and to the point. Comprehension forms the basis of Precis-writing which in its turn leads to composition writing. Thus comprehension plays a very significant part in the mental development of the students learning English.

Delving into Chapter 24 of the Class 7 English Grammar syllabus, students are introduced to the pivotal skill of Comprehension, rooted in the word ‘Comprehend’. Truly understanding a text means mentally grasping its core essence, and that’s precisely what comprehension exercises aim to foster. Comprehension is more than just reading; it’s about understanding, analyzing, and deriving meaning from an unseen passage. For students, this isn’t merely an exercise; it’s a journey to develop a profound understanding of the English language.

Instructions to write the answers

  • Read the passage carefully two or three times so that the theme of the passage may be understood.
  • Read the questions carefully and underline the relevant portions of the given passage which you feel should be the most suitable answers.
  • Now write answer to the questions in simple, easy and current language.
  • Remember that the answers should be your own composition. Do not try to copy the very words of the passage.
  • The answers must have sound grammatical construction. Great care should be taken in the use of punctuation also.
  • Several answers should not be put in the same paragraph. Each answer should be written in a separate paragraph and should have its number corresponding to that of the question.

At the heart of comprehension lies the ability to discern the true meaning of a text. Students are encouraged to immerse themselves in the passage, ensuring they capture its nuances and overarching themes. Answering the subsequent questions demands a synthesis of this understanding, and students should prioritize brevity and precision in their responses. Answers need to be concise, reflecting a genuine grasp of the content, while also being articulated in the student’s unique voice.

Unseen Passage 1

A giant in stature, with long hair, wearing a bottle green fur lined overcoat and round seal skin cap on his head, Oscar Wilde arrived in New York on 2nd of January 1882 on a lecture tour. He was mobbed by reporters who asked him (much to his irritation) unimportant questions such as how he liked his eggs fried? How he trimmed his finger nails? And what temperature he preferred his bath to be? His answers showed a total lack of interest. However, when he stepped ashore, the customs official asked, “Have you anything to declare?” and with customary style. Wilde replied, “No, I have nothing to declare (pause) except my genius.” Few remarks in history have travelled as widely and as quickly as that one.

Questions for Practice

  • Mention two details of Oscar’s physical appearance when he came to New York?
  • Why did he come to New York?
  • Oscar Wilde was not interested in answering the questions of reporters. Why?
  • What does Oscar Wilde’s answer to the custom officer’s questions show?
  • Find a word in the passage which means “exceptional ability in a person”.

Answers of Passage 1

  • He was so tall that he looked like a giant. Secondly, he had long hair.
  • He came to New York on a lecture tour.

Moreover, comprehension is the stepping stone to more advanced English skills. It lays a robust foundation for precis-writing, ultimately guiding students towards the realm of composition writing. In the broader educational landscape, comprehension exercises are not mere tasks but tools for holistic mental development, enhancing students’ analytical capabilities and deepening their relationship with the English language.
