4 Common Types of Team Conflict — and How to Resolve Them

Advice backed by three decades of research into thousands of team conflicts around the world.

Managers spend 20% of their time on average managing team conflict. Over the past three decades, the authors have studied thousands of team conflicts around the world and have identified four common patterns of team conflict. The first occurs when conflict revolves around a single member of a team (20-25% of team conflicts). The second is when two members of a team disagree (the most common team conflict at 35%). The third is when two subgroups in a team are at odds (20-25%). The fourth is when all members of a team are disagreeing in a whole-team conflict (less than 15%). The authors suggest strategies to tailor a conflict resolution approach for each type, so that managers can address conflict as close to its origin as possible.

If you have ever managed a team or worked on one, you know that conflict within a team is as inevitable as it is distracting. Many managers avoid dealing with conflict in their team where possible, hoping reasonable people can work it out. Despite this, research shows that managers spend upwards of 20% of their time on average managing conflict.

designate 3 synonyms

The 3.5 million acres located north of Los Angeles and the Inland Empire received the distinction this week in an announcement from the Sentinel Landscape Partnership, a collaboration between the departments of Defense, Agriculture and Interior that was formed in 2013. The area includes multi-use public lands, farmlands, recreational lands and military training areas and lies in the desert between Ridgecrest and the Morongo Basin.

The desert tortoise is one of many animals that call...

The desert tortoise is one of many animals that call the Combat Center home. They are also the only species aboard the installation listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act. The Tortoise Research and Captive Rearing Site helps bolster the local population of the desert tortoise with head starting. Head starting involves bringing in pregnant tortoises, allowing them to lay their eggs in the facility and then safe guarding the hatchlings until they are large enough to fend off predation and can better withstand the harsh desert elements. If the population of the desert tortoise declines, the species could become listed as endangered. This could compromise Marines’ ability to train aboard the Combat Center. TRACRS contains their head starting site to one part of the base, helping to keep the population out of training areas. The implementation of programs such as TRACRS is the Combat Center’s way of protecting and growing the population of the threatened species which in turn allows the Marine Corps to continue training operations aboard its premier pre-deployment training facility.

The new designation is a “force-multiplier” for Marine Air Ground Combat Center 29 Palms and the other Mojave Desert military installations supporting conservation efforts in range resilience and sustainability, Marine officials said.

Other bases in the Mojave Desert include the National Training Center Fort Irwin, Edwards Air Force Base, Naval Air Weapons Station China Lake and Marine Corps Logistics Base Barstow.

“As an example, it amplifies the combat center’s commitment to the tortoise (repopulation), habitat restoration and other recovery efforts on and off the installation,” said Chief Warrant Officer 2  Brandon Owen, a 29 Palms base spokesperson.

The tortoise population has declined 50% to 90% in the Mojave Desert due to a wide range of threats, including ravens, coyotes, habitation degradation, disease, being run over by vehicles and invasive plants.

A major component of the base’s program to restore the tortoise population is to have pregnant females brought in to nest in captivity so the babies hatch in a protected environment. This allows them to grow larger with predator-resistant shells before being released into the wilderness as juveniles. The base has released more than 100 babies into the wild in the last few years.

Base ecologists at 29 Palms said the tortoise program has resulted in a 96% survival rate of turtles inside the facility each year. In the wild, the survival rate is less than 50%, base officials said.

The tortoises are tagged and tracked over several years to monitor their growth, movements and survival rates. The research shows scientists which methods work best for raising baby tortoises, and this information benefits other installations, too, Marine officials said.

The new designation encourages the involved federal agencies to work more closely together and remove bureaucratic roadblocks, helping to bring together coalitions that include multiple nonprofits in the area and federal, state, county and local organizations who can now work together more easily in restoring habitat and ecosystem function by creating species corridors and improving soil health, and managing watersheds to build resilience to a warmer, more arid climate.

Some of the groups will include California State Parks, Death Valley National Park, Desert Tortoise Council, Joshua Tree National Park and the University of California Riverside.

In addition to better collaboration it also prevents development around military installations with the aim of protecting those areas, but not interfering with training. The federal designation lets local government agencies and nonprofits pay farmers to keep farms and wildlife habitats as thy presently are.

“The program provides DOD with the unique opportunity to expand and diversify our partnerships to enhance the resilience of military installations and the local communities that support them,” Brendan Owens, assistant secretary of defense for energy, installations, and environment, said in a statement. “This year, the department is excited to support the five newly designated landscapes in achieving their dual priorities of safeguarding national defense and enhancing installation and community resilience, particularly in the Pacific and Western regions.”

There are now 17 Sentinel Landscapes, the other newly designated areas are in Hawaii, New Mexico, Pennsylvania and Utah.

Among the goals centered around the new designation in the desert are reducing vehicle strikes that kill threatened, endangered, or sensitive species and reclaiming and protecting 50,000 acres of priority habitats through restoration, officials said.

The groups will also work through community outreach to promote conservation through education, including preventing illegal off-highway vehicle use and illegal cannabis growth. There will also be efforts to work with growing cooperatives to develop climate-resilient seeds.

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — National political themes will lead off the campaign for Pennsylvania’s next attorney general, an office that played a major role — and gained national notoriety — in fighting lawsuits designed to keep Donald Trump in power after he lost the 2020 presidential election to Joe Biden.

The nominees — Democrat Eugene DePasquale , the former twice-elected state auditor general, and Republican Dave Sunday , the twice-elected district attorney of York County — will carry forward messages they honed in their primary campaigns into their November general election contest.

DePasquale says his top two priorities reflect the concerns he heard from Democratic primary voters: protecting elections and abortion rights.

DePasquale said Pennsylvanians see the state’s top law enforcement office differently following Trump’s efforts to overturn the 2020 election and the U.S. Supreme Court overturning of the landmark Roe v. Wade decision protecting abortion rights.

Its law enforcement role is still important, DePasquale said. “But abortion rights and democracy and voting rights were over and over and over again expressed to me by voters.”

Sunday says the fentanyl crisis is “the number one issue facing Pennsylvanians,” and he packages it with a national GOP talking point during an election year when Trump is putting a target on Biden’s immigration policy: “every state is a border state.”

What to know about the 2024 Election

  • Democracy: American democracy has overcome big stress tests since 2020. More challenges lie ahead in 2024.
  • AP’s Role: The Associated Press is the most trusted source of information on election night, with a history of accuracy dating to 1848. Learn more.
  • Read the latest: Follow AP’s complete coverage of this year’s election.

Sunday said his focus on fentanyl isn’t political, but reflects his experience both as a county prosecutor and on the campaign trail.

“When I started talking about the things that I’ve done as an elected D.A., I was shocked, actually, how many people waited to privately talk to me after every event to tell me that they had a child that died of an overdose, a brother that died of an overdose,” Sunday said in an interview.

The meat and potatoes of Pennsylvania’s attorney general is prosecuting fraudsters, drug traffickers, gun traffickers, public corruption and environmental crimes, while defending state agencies against lawsuits.

But, state attorneys general also are becoming increasingly political and reflecting the intense polarization of the nation’s two major parties, said Paul Nolette, a political science professor at Marquette University.

As part of that, they have become big players in forging national policy by increasingly challenging federal laws and regulations in court, usually in bands of Republican-led states or Democratic-led states, Nolette said.

In interviews, both DePasquale and Sunday nodded to the need for safe communities and said they would fight violent crime. They also talked of the need to treat the underlying causes of crime, such as addiction and mental illness.

When it comes to fighting fentanyl, they give similar answers: work with all levels of government and the treatment community.

Fentanyl and other synthetic opioids are estimated to kill more than 150 Americans every day, and Biden’s administration says it has accelerated its efforts to stop the flow into the United States. More than 90% of illegally imported fentanyl is seized at the southwestern border, smuggled mostly in vehicles driven by U.S. citizens, according to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

Both say they will defend Pennsylvania law making abortion legal through 23 weeks of pregnancy.

Sunday, however, declined to discuss his position on abortion rights, saying, “I’m not running to be a legislator.”

DePasquale said he supports abortion rights and predicted that the attorney general will be called on to protect women coming to Pennsylvania for an abortion from officials in anti-abortion states who might try to prosecute them or get their health care records.

Fifteen Democratic-controlled states have laws intended to protect providers and others from such prosecutions.

Another possibility is that Pennsylvania’s next attorney general — to be sworn in in January — will face litigation surrounding this November’s presidential election, when the state is again expected to be a premier battleground state.

Sunday and DePasquale both say they are prepared for that possibility.

Sunday said he doesn’t question that Biden won the election in 2020, but he hasn’t rejected Trump’s baseless claims that widespread fraud changed the outcome in Pennsylvania or anywhere else. Sunday said he could only speak to the election fraud claims that his office investigated in York County.

Officials in Trump’s own administration said they found no evidence of fraud .

DePasquale said there should be no question about the validity of the 2020 election, saying there is a principle involved in accepting multiple court decisions that rejected Trump’s claims of election fraud.

“And if you’re not willing to accept that,” DePasquale said, “then I question whether you even support following the rule of law in Pennsylvania.”

Dodgers DFA Ex-Cardinals Hurler Despite Strong Start; Reunion Would Make Sense

Nate hagerty | may 16, 2024.

Sep 10, 2020; St. Louis, Missouri, USA; St. Louis Cardinals relief pitcher Nabil Crismatt (74)

  • St. Louis Cardinals

The St. Louis Cardinals have found themselves back at the bottom of the National League Central after momentarily climbing their way to third place Wednesday afternoon.

If the Cardinals hope to get the momentum going and compete to win their division, not only does the lineup have to step up but so will the pitching staff.

Despite the bullpen being the strongest piece of St. Louis' roster at the moment, it wouldn't hurt to add some depth. There's one former Cardinals hurler who the club should consider acquiring to bolster their arsenal.

Los Angeles Dodgers right-handed pitcher Nabil Crismatt was designated for assignment after showcasing a limited but strong start to the season, the team announced Wednesday.

Crismatt posted a 1-1 record with a 2.57 ERA, 6-to-0 strikeout-to-walk ratio, .269 batting average against and a 1.00 WHIP in seven innings pitched across five games pitched for the Dodgers in 2024.

The 29-year-old reliever made his Major League Baseball debut with St. Louis back in the shortened 2020 season but only recorded 8 1/3 innings until signing with the San Diego Padres the following year.

Despite struggling in 2023, Crismatt has pitched well throughout the five seasons he's been in the league -- logging a 3.71 ERA with a 162-to-58 strikeout-to-walk ratio, .258 batting average against and a 1.30 WHIP in 177 innings pitched.

With St. Louis having to promote reliever Matthew Liberatore to be a spot starter to accommodate for the absence of left-hander Steven Matz due to injury, it might be in the Cardinals' best interest to add some extra depth to the bullpen by claiming Crismatt.

The Cardinals are going to need all the help they can get to turn this season around and landing an extra reliever capable of providing quality innings would certainly be beneficial.

The victory secured a series win and salvaged a 3-3 road trip. A critical 10-game homestand looms for a Houston team still seeking some stability. Seven of the 10 games are against American League West opponents, offering the club its best chance at gaining ground from the cellar.

Dana Brown must consider all options

Most clubhouses have at least one television always tuned to MLB Network, so general manager Dana Brown had no choice but to back a ballclub that may be listening. Saying he “can’t predict any scenario” in which the Astros sell at the trade deadline is one of the only acceptable responses to a question that isn’t going away, even after a respectable road trip.

"No. No, I can't envision that. This ballclub is too good." – Astros GM Dana Brown on if he envisions a scenario where the team is a seller #MLBNow | #Relentless pic.twitter.com/0kEEULJUoW — MLB Now (@MLBNow) May 7, 2024

Since 1901, only seven teams have started a season 15-25 and finished with a winning record. Just three of them made the playoffs, though a third wild-card spot and an underperforming American League West give the Astros more hope than other teams mired in their situation.

Brown shouldn’t declare the season dead on May 7, but refusing to acknowledge the possibility of a selloff — even privately — is almost as misguided. Before the season, both The Athletic’s Keith Law and MLB Pipeline ranked Houston’s farm system 27th out of 30 teams. Infusing more talent is crucial, and part of the reason owner Jim Crane hired Brown in the first place.

Nothing Crane has done during his ownership tenure suggests he’s about to offer the type of extension it will take to retain Kyle Tucker , who launched his league-leading 13th home run on Sunday. Alex Bregman ’s brutal start also won’t stop agent Scott Boras from seeking the sort of deal Crane has never been willing to give.

If the Astros can’t engineer a turnaround and enter July with realistic playoff chances, it would be a dereliction of duty not to dangle one or both of those players during the trade deadline. Pitchers Verlander and Ryan Pressly are obvious candidates, too, but both have no-trade clauses in their contracts and would prefer to stay in Houston.

Since his franchise’s golden era began, Crane has reiterated: “While I’m here, the window is always going to be open.” His stance means much more than anything Brown will utter across the next three months.

Barring a total collapse, it’s difficult to envision Crane softening on such a strong statement and conceding, especially while carrying the largest payroll during his ownership tenure. He resides in a city and owns a franchise well-versed in this exact situation. The last team to start 15-25 and make the playoffs? The 2005 National League champion Houston Astros.

Yordan Alvarez ’s run production problem

Since April 10, Alvarez has taken 33 plate appearances with runners in scoring position. He has one hit: a game-tying single down the right-field line during Friday’s 5-2 win against the Tigers.

Among Astros, only Yainer Diaz has taken more at-bats than Alvarez with runners in scoring position across that 28-game span. Since it began, Alvarez’s OPS has plummeted 259 points from 1.038 to .779. It never dipped below .895 last season.

The situation epitomizes the Astros’ first 40 games. Houston has the sport’s second-highest batting average but has been outscored by 13 other teams. Getting the club’s best hitter a bevy of at-bats with runners in scoring position should be its foremost goal. The Astros are accomplishing it — and Alvarez isn’t coming through.

Entering Sunday, Alvarez had a minus-5 batter run value with runners in scoring position, according to Baseball Savant. Last season, it was 28. Alvarez is hitting .157 with runners in scoring position this season. A .231 expected batting average suggests there isn’t much bad luck involved, either.

Dissecting Alvarez’s issues with runners in scoring position is difficult and also arrives with the caveat of a small sample size. His 15.2 percent whiff rate with runners in scoring position is lower than his 22.9 percent career clip while his 92.8 mph average exit velocity is in line with his 93 mph season average. A 39.4 percent hard-hit rate, however, is far lower than his usual clip.

All season, manager Joe Espada has bemoaned a lack of plate discipline during run-scoring situations. Entering Sunday’s game, Alvarez had swung at 27 of the 87 pitches he saw out of the strike zone with runners in scoring position — a 31 percent clip almost identical to his overall 30.8 percent chase rate this season. That, it should be noted, is elevated from Alvarez’s career 26.6 percent rate.

Last season, Alvarez had a 28.4 chase rate with runners in scoring position. Perhaps he, like so many in this lineup, is feeling the pressure of a poor start and trying to compensate. All 176 of Alvarez’s plate appearances have arrived from either the second or third spots in the batting order. Espada isn’t about to move him, either, putting the onus on a preseason MVP candidate to discover a way to clutch up.

Farewell to two homegrown success stories?

The Astros drafted Corey Julks and Brandon Bielak three rounds apart in 2017, part of a 42-man draft class that’s already produced 13 major-league players. Neither signed for more than $150,000 and both were overshadowed by more noticeable names taken beforehand.

Both Julks and Bielak ascended to viable major-league players: a testament to Houston’s amateur scouting and player development. The team designated both players for assignment this weekend and each stands a decent chance of catching on with another club, be it via a waiver claim or small trade.

Julks grew up in The Woodlands, a Houston suburb, before playing three seasons at the University of Houston. His inclusion on the team’s Opening Day roster last season — and subsequent April success — represented a feel-good story for both the franchise and the city that houses it.

Still, Julks is 28 and sported a career .650 OPS against major-league pitching. Joey Loperfido passed him on the organization’s outfield hierarchy, Pedro León is threatening to do the same, and top prospect Jacob Melton may be in Triple A soon.

At full strength, Houston already has two right-handed hitting outfielders on its 26-man roster: Chas McCormick and Jake Meyers . Utilityman Mauricio Dubón ’s increased time in the outfield only furthered a logjam Julks could not crack.

Julks has outperformed at Triple A and has two minor-league option years remaining, which will increase his value to 29 other teams. Teams are always searching for pitching depth and Bielak’s respectable numbers at the major-league level — a 4.65 ERA in 191 2/3 innings — may entice some clubs.

However, Bielak is out of minor-league options, one of the primary reasons he made Houston’s Opening Day roster as a swingman. The team is already bereft of pitching depth and did not want to risk losing Bielak on waivers so early in the season.

Activating Cristian Javier on Saturday forced them to confront that scenario. The Astros could have optioned Shawn Dubin to Triple A and kept Bielak on the major-league roster, but Dubin’s ability to handle multiple innings with higher-upside stuff must have appealed to an Astros team that’s already put Dubin in a few high-leverage situations this season.

Bielak never got those chances, perhaps the first sign that his days were numbered. José Urquidy ’s impending return from the injured list could force either Spencer Arrighetti or Hunter Brown to the bullpen, too, taking the place Bielak once occupied.
