Get your students involved in their own learning!

This module includes examples of projects, background information and teaching ideas to promote experiential environmental learning. These projects can get your students personally involved and invested, moving the learning experience from the classroom to their own lives.

Every student has an environmental impact.

All of our decisions and actions throughout the day affect our environment. What types of transportation do you use? Is your food locally-produced or shipped from another state or country? Does a product's packaging influence your decision to buy it? Do you go through the day using energy and resources without considering the environmental impacts of each of your actions?

These questions can be explored with an experience-based approach. Experience-based environmental learning is an opportunity to learn through one's own lifestyle and actions. In a sense, each student is their own laboratory. Experience-based environmental projects offer a way for students to apply classroom topics like energy use, global warming, water quality and land use to their own lives, and to realize that although these issues may be global or regional, they ultimately have roots at the individual level.

Why use experience-based environmental projects?

Experience-based learning has a tremendous and lasting effect on students. For instance, a global environmental issue such as the Kyoto Treaty may not seem relevant to students' everyday lives. However, if you ask them to calculate their carbon dioxide output and then somehow reduce it enough to meet the Kyoto standards, they will quickly gain a profound understanding of exactly what it means to reduce carbon emissions. Students will realize that nearly every move they make has an associated environmental impact.

Experience-based projects also provide an attractive alternative to traditional assignments and appeal to students with a wide range of learning styles and levels of intellectual sophistication. Many students welcome the challenge to use their own lives as an experiment. Often these projects bring a class closer together and foster an atmosphere of teamwork as students participate in the experience together. 3 Eco-Friendly Science Projects That Will Make Your Students Smile

One of many school-age student experiences is the science fair, which asks inquiring minds to pick a testable question and do some research. Students then present their findings to a group of judges and can win prizes such as medals or even money for college. Choosing an eco-friendly science project is a great way to get your student invested in the world around them as much as possible!

Here are three suggestions for eco-friendly projects that are fun, informative, and related to climate studies.

The plants and soil erosion project

This project, adapted from Ben Finio, Ph.D. of Science Buddies , asks: can plants stop soil erosion? You will need six aluminum bread pans (8x3x3) and two aluminum cake pans (12x8x1), soil for all six bread pans, radish seeds, a metric ruler, sticky notes, a permanent marker, scissors, a watering can, a sunny window or outside area for the plants, an object that can prop up the bread pan at least 3 centimeters, a kitchen scale, and an outdoor test area with a flat surface.

Don't forget your lab notebook!

First, fill each of the bread pans with soil, but not all the way to the top. Then, plant radish seeds in three of the bread pans. Finally, label each of the bread pans with a trial number and whether or not the pan has seeds. You will need three bread pans with seeds and three without.

Next, use scissors to make small holes along the bottom of each bread pan to allow excess water to drain out of the pans. Then, place each of the bread pans inside the two cake pans. Based on the measurements, three bread pans should fit in each cake pan. Don't mix and match! Put all of the bread pans with seeds together. Put both cake pans in the sun. Finally, for 7-10 days, water all the bread pans gently once a day. Once the seeds are 8 to 10 centimeters tall, the next phase begins.

Use the kitchen scale to measure the mass of an empty cake pan and write it down. Then, cut two vertical lines down one short end of each cake pan to expose the soil. Next, empty the cake pans, then use your object (could be a book or lunchbox) to prop up the bread pan, so the cut side is facing down into the cake pan. Fill up the watering can to a measured amount (any amount, just keep it the same each time!) and count to five while slowly pouring water over the bread pan.

Lift up the bread pan out of the cake pan, making sure not to spill any soil. You're left with a cake pan full of soil and water. Drain the water and measure the cake pan using your kitchen scale. Write down the mass of the pan with the soil. You can subtract the mass of the empty cake pan from the pan + soil to get the mass of the soil. Then, repeat the experiment using all the other bread pans!

The results should show that the pans with plants reduce the amount of soil lost — or the "erosion" crated in the pan.

This project is adapted from Jess of Sustainability Science , who performs small-scale science experiments on her Instagram. In this experiment, students need three clear jars with lids. After filling each jar with one cup of water, measure and record the temperature of each sample with a thermometer. Then, put the lids back on. Put one jar in a sunny area, one in a dark closet, and one in a room with artificial light.

After 4 to 5 hours, remove the jars and measure the individual temperatures. Ask your student to predict which one would change the most, or the least, and why.

The landfill emissions project

This experiment from the blog Honestly Modern will demonstrate to students how food decomposition and greenhouse gases work in a landfill. You will need roughly four "test bottles" (these can be used water bottles!), four balloons, and four different kinds of food scraps. As always, don't forget a lab notebook for recording findings!

First, fill three food containers with food scraps and water, but fill the fourth with only water. Then, cover each of the bottle mouths with a balloon and seal the edges with tape if the balloons aren't covering the whole lid. Observe over the course of a few days to a week as the balloons will inflate with the methane gas caused by the decomposition.

A variation on this experiment could include testing different types of food scraps against one another, to see which decomposes the fastest.

While there are innumerable science topics for kids to choose for their research, we thought it would be helpful to offer suggestions that relate to environmental science. With Earth Day and Science Fairs on the horizon, there are many great themes to help students examine an environmental topic in depth and educate their classmates and parents at the same time. Here are some ideas for environmental science fair projects:

[Do the demonstration in “ Water, Water Everywhere .”] 3.   How do we clean dirty water to make it clean enough to drink? [Do the demonstration in “ Like Water and Oil ” to show the effects of oil spills.] 6.   What are water-borne diseases and how do they affect public health?

6. Test if antibiotics are causing oxidative stress by testing if effects occur under conditions where salt intake is very high.

7. Test if it is possible to measure uric acid levels using urine samples, do not want any technicians touching your sample during the storage/ analysis process and keeping results secret on the computer that backs up results of the experiment!

8. Detect viruses using an instrument that is able to bidirectionally transmit the virus but filters out all other non-viruses. Also, it needs to be able to show traps and blanks in the coverage method

9. Lab experiment where one food sample has 2 different species created as food and tested for one species over weeks to see what happens.

5. Designing and constructing a telescope with different lenses designs for example, making them bigger or smaller

6. Ways to find something you want – 1) magnifying glass – look where you think it is (possible sites in the universe), 2) some other kind of device that determines altitude by contact with ammonia otherwise known as Becquerel’s Blue Ray or through looking at stars and based upon quantities recorded on the ground which are used by early humans to predict where the sun and stars could be.

Engineering science fair projects for college students

1. Using electrolysis techniques to study chlorine from water.

2. Sound level experiment where air compressor is used as an increasing distance between loudspeakers.

3. Doppler radar project analyzing a Skyping cell phone call.

4. Determine the velocity of an object dropped from a high point. Add 6-8 feet to gain science accuracy, or change distance between drop and subsequent measurement.

Supporting Participatory Science for Environmental Protection

H appy Participatory Science Month! In April, EPA and other organizations around the world are celebrating the contributions of the public to scientific research.

Participatory science harnesses the collective strength of the public to ask scientific questions, collect data, and advance research that is important to their communities. Together, EPA and communities protect human health and the environment by using participatory science to inform environmental decision-making on local, regional and national scales.

EPA supports participatory science in many ways, including by designing projects that the public can participate in, providing funding for external projects, loaning equipment to community monitoring groups, and making participatory science data usable and available for the public through dashboards that display air and water quality data.

To kick off 2024 Participatory Science Month, we are spotlighting EPA’s recent efforts to support participatory science projects. One way that EPA is supporting participatory science is through grant programs. By offering grants to communities who want to get involved in science, EPA is investing in new sources of local environmental data, helping communities answer important environmental questions, and building scientific capacity in communities with environmental justice concerns. Port of Oakland

Environmental Justice Grants

West Oakland is one of California’s most pollution-burdened communities, especially due to air pollution from the nearby Port of Oakland. In 2017, California passed a law promoting community-based emissions reduction in neighborhoods like West Oakland that are disproportionately impacted by air pollution. In response, the West Oakland Environmental Indicators Project (WOEIP), alongside a steering committee of regulators, local businesses, and community residents, developed the West Oakland Community Action Plan. The plan consists of 89 strategies to reduce air pollution that are currently being implemented by California environmental agencies and local community groups.

However, as West Oakland continues to implement the Community Action Plan, community leaders need to know whether the plan’s strategies have been effective at reducing air pollution, and where more work may be needed. In 2023, WOEIP was selected to receive an EPA Environmental Justice Cooperative Problem Solving grant of $500,000 in Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) funding to tackle this problem using participatory science. First, WOEIP will collaborate with the community to develop pollution and community equity metrics that will accurately capture progress towards the Community Action Plan’s goals. Next, they will deploy a community air monitoring network that will allow residents and regulators to access hyper-local air pollution data. These data will be directly used to support strategies to improve public health in West Oakland, both by community residents and by regulators as they work towards effective implementation of the West Oakland Community Action Plan.

University Projects

Colleges and universities often have established relationships with communities and researchers, which makes them well-positioned to coordinate participatory science efforts. EPA supports university-led participatory science programs through its Science to Achieve Results (STAR) grants. The STAR program funds many types of environmental research and has awarded over 4,100 grants nationwide since 1995. More recently, many of these projects have included community based or participatory research components; EPA is currently funding 20 extramural research grants that include participatory science.

Through STAR, EPA funds innovative collaborations between academic researchers and participatory scientists. For example, EPA awarded over $1.3 million to the City University of New York – York College, City University of New York – Medgar Evers College, and Rutgers University – Newark to study air pollution-health-climate interactions in southeast Queens, New York. Residents of southeast Queens live near two waste transfer stations, which potentially exposes them to high levels of diesel exhaust and blowoff from the waste hauling trucks at the facilities. Researchers are training community residents to identify sites of concern and use low-cost, innovative methods to measure the concentration of various air pollutants associated with the waste transfer stations. This strategy will build the community’s capacity to collect environmental data and empower them with local data to evaluate policy solutions for reducing emissions and protecting public health.

Tell us about your journey to the University of Minnesota.

I became fascinated with synthetic chemistry as an intern at Tekmira Pharmaceuticals (now Arbutus Biopharm) in Burnaby, BC. It struck me as so powerful that humans could manipulate matter in order to make and break bonds and create compounds with new chemical compositions and properties. Later in third-year inorganic chemistry class, I became fascinated with the chemistry of metals, and the rest of my career has been devoted to pursuing this passion. Like many others in my discipline, I was motivated by the desire to learn and develop new knowledge by carrying out experimental research. I was also passionate about sustainability and soon realized that I could use my knowledge of inorganic chemistry to contribute to more sustainable synthesis and energy solutions. My excitement for this topic is what drove me to pursue a Ph.D. at the University of Ottawa (fun fact: Canada's only officially bilingual institution!) and then a postdoc at Caltech. 

We would love to hear more about your research! What do you hope to accomplish with this work? What is the real-world impact for the average person?

Our research is focused on development of atomically precise nanocluster systems that mimic the structure and reactivity of heterogeneous electrocatalysts. By preparing these discrete compounds and evaluating them in solution environments, we can precisely pinpoint important mechanistic information including the site of substrate binding, delocalization of charge, and the dynamic reconfiguration of bonds that leads to substrate turnover. Our cluster systems not only capture the capabilities of heterogeneous electrocatalysts in a discrete model but they go one step beyond these capabilities in that they have a high density of active sites and are precisely tunable in their steric environment and electronic structure according to well-defined structure-property relationships. Overall, we hope to develop new approaches to catalysis using our atomically precise nanocluster systems and ultimately contribute solutions to solve climate change, for example by developing methods for synthesizing commodity chemicals on large scale using abundant feedstocks (like CO2) and renewable electricity. 

What courses do you teach? What can students expect to get out of your course?

I teach advanced inorganic chemistry classes (CHEM 4745/8745 and 4715/8715) and introductory general chemistry (CHEM 1061). I love talking to students and drawing them into deep conversations about the properties and study of matter! I believe that education is accessible to anyone with a good work ethic and growth mindset, and my teaching style reflects this philosophy. Activities in my classes are split between short, interactive lectures and small-group activities where students go deep with the material through problem-solving and discussion. Students in my classes can expect to be challenged intellectually and ultimately rewarded with new ways of thinking about challenging scientific concepts. 

What do you hope to contribute to the chemistry community at the University?

Beyond the science, I hope to reflect that chemistry is something that is accessible and practicable for all, and that teamwork and mentorship are integral to the practice. Also, I hope to provide opportunities for students to grow their personal, interpersonal, and scientific abilities through the practice of science and through participation in conferences and other programming. 

What do you do outside of the classroom/lab/office for fun?

I am pretty much obsessed with training my body for better health and longevity. I have enjoyed reading books such as "Outlive" by Peter Attia that have focused my efforts in these areas. My current exercise program includes regular zone 2 training (cycling/walking), interval training, strength training, and (mostly for fun) bouldering.

Please give a brief description of your role within the UMN Chemistry department.

I am the Senior Designer for the Center For Sustainable Polymers. My day-to-day tasks include creating artwork for publication, managing the website, and leading our monthly research meetings. 

Before coming to the University of Minnesota I was a design consultant for Pentair and Bright Health in the Twin Cities. In addition, I spent a fair amount of time in the nonprofit world leading marketing and communications efforts. 

What’s your favorite piece of chemistry/science pop culture media? Why do you love it?

I remember visiting the Bell Museum for a CSP Annual Meeting years ago and we got to see closeup images of the Mars surface in their Planetarium. It is so special to live in a time when we get to see images from another planet. And I am equally excited to see what the Mars Perseverance rover returns to us in 2033.

Where is your favorite spot in the Twin Cities?

The Prospect Park Water Tower is a favorite spot. It is currently in the process of renovation but my guess is that they will have limited access to the tower again in a couple of years. It is a great place to get a birds eye view of Minneapolis.

I am a Minnesotan, born and raised! I went to college and got my chemistry degree at the University of Minnesota Morris, which is part of the U system but out in the middle of western Minnesota, in 2020. I also studied for a semester at the University of Limerick in Ireland for a semester studying chemical nanotechnology. I applied for graduate school all over the US but UMN was one of the few schools felt I could thrive in. I loved the atmosphere and people I met.

We would love to hear more about your research interests! What do you hope to accomplish with this work? What is the real-world impact for the average person?

I work on the development of ion-selective electrodes. Ion detection is vital for medical analysis, environmental monitoring, and industrial applications. think of ions such as chloride and potassium, for medical purposes such as to assess kidney function, and nitrate and arsenate, common environmental pollutants. While there is equipment that can detect there ions, many of them are costly, require complex instrumentation with trained professionals, and are not time-efficient. Ion-selective electrodes (ISEs) are my are an great alternative, they have high selectivity, sensitivity, and versatility. They also overcome the limits that many other instruments have, being relatively small, easy to handle, and give fast response times. These factors are critical for point of care, for rapid test results, and for deployable, wearable, and implantable devices. For these applications, sensors not only need to be dependable for short periods but for days or even years. That is why I have pushed the boundaries of ISE systems to develop exceedingly stable sensing and reference electrodes that can be used to meet the needs of the medical, environmental, and industrial fields today.

Are you involved in any student groups? What inspired you to get involved?

I am currently the co-president for the Joint Safety Team! I have always been a big proponent of lab safety culture and when the opportunity came up, I thought why not? I have been able to work with other lab safety teams throughout the US and we recently submitted a paper on LSO programs as well as were accepted to host a symposium at ACS fall on lab safety culture. Lab safety is something that affects everyone, whether it be on big or small scales, and I am very happy to have been able to be a part of that here.

We keep a garden on our patio that I (try to) help take care of and I am always down for an easy hike in the fall.
