How To Use Brush Lettering Pratice Sheets

Before we take a deep dive into the wonderful world of printable brush lettering practice sheets, let me share a few nuggets of wisdom with you. You see, I’ve been down this road before and made some blunders along the way (cue dramatic music).

Here’s the thing: if you’re planning to flex your lettering muscles directly on these worksheets, it’s crucial to use high-quality printing paper – like this HP Premium Paper . The last thing we want is a damaged pen, right? Trust me, your pen will thank you!

But wait, there’s more! If you’d rather not invest in premium paper (or if you’re just feeling a bit thrifty), there’s another option. Grab any old piece of paper and slip a sheet of tracing paper on top. Voila! You’ve got yourself a reusable worksheet. Plus, tracing paper is pretty easy on the wallet.

Now, if you’re wondering which tracing paper to choose, I’ve got you covered. My recommendation would be this marker paper or this tracing paper .

Lettering Supplies

Alright, now that we’ve got our paper sorted, you might be wondering, “What about pens?” I’m glad you asked because I have some juicy tips to share with you on this!

The golden rule for picking out pens for brush lettering is to look for one with a flexible tip. Why, you ask? Well, this gives you the power to create both thin and thick lines. Pretty cool, right?

Now, let’s talk budget-friendly options. You might be surprised to learn that you probably already have a perfect tool lying around your house – Crayola Super Tips ! Yup, these little rascals can pull off the same brush calligraphy magic as their pricier counterparts, but at a fraction of the cost.

Other than that, here are some pens I’d recommend:

• Tombow Dual Brush Pens . They are amazing, have tons of colors, and, most importantly – their brushes are very beginner-friendly. Plus, the marker tip will help you fix any small mistakes in your lettering you might make as a beginner.
• Smaller brush pen for more detailed work, such as headers for your weekly spreads. Here is where you have a wonderful option of Tombow Fudenosuke pens . They come in hard and soft tips so that you can control the style of your lettering.

My Favorite Brush Letter Practice Sheets:

Free 14-day Brush Basics Booster Challenge (Lyssy Creates) Lyssy has a series of free videos that explain in VERY detailed tutorials on how to hold, angle and practice the strokes you need to build all letters. Her tutorials helped me more than any other video I’ve watched so far. The videos come directly to your email every day or two and she provides the greatest practice sheets in the first email! She includes sheets for small and large brushes.

Not Your Average Brush Pen Calligraphy Drills (The Postman’s Knock) Lindsey made this sheet to practice adjusting your pressure during your brush calligraphy. This is a great sheet I’ve printed and done so many times with lots of different markers.

#90DaysOfDrills Challenge (Two Easels) Veronica offers this as a paid sheet set in her Etsy store, but if you would like them for free just sign up for the emails and on Monday mornings she sends the practice sheets for that week. These are a great practice set for small brushes (like the Tombow Fudenosuke brushes).

LETTERING SUPPLIES I RECOMMEND

There are so many hand lettering supplies out there and everyone has their own preference. But here are the supplies that I have used and can recommend.

• Tombow Dual Brush Pens –  These pens have a flexible brush tip and also a non-flexible tip. They come in SO.MANY.COLORS. Currently, I have the Brights , Galaxy , and Pastels .
• Tombow Fudenosuke – these pens give you a thinner line than the Dual Brush Pens. I love them because I can get a really thin upstroke. They now come in colors but I just have basic black.
• ipad Pro , Apple Pencil and Procreate app (for digital lettering) – since I got my iPad Pro a few years ago, it has been my go-to way to create hand lettering. It is an investment but well worth it for all the amazing things you can create. Check out this post to learn how to use these practice sheets in Procreate .

Take your hand lettering to the next level with these free printable brush lettering practice sheets.

Brush lettering and hand lettering has become my most favorite past time this last year.  That’s right, it’s been a year of practicing.  I still have a long way to go, but it has been such a stress reliever for my to just sit and let the pens flow on the paper.  I don’t always like how things turn out, so that is why I practice, practice, practice.

If you love the brush lettering and hand lettering trend, and want to learn how to do it too, these free printable brush lettering practice sheets are for you.  They have both a Serif and Sans Serif alphabet, strokes practice pages, common words and phrases practice sheet and then a lined black page to come up with your own words.

Brush Lettering Practice Sheets

My favorite brush pens to use are the Tombow dual brush pens and the Sharpie brush pens .  I like how easy the Tombow dual brush pens blend together and that using the small tip, I can clean up any messy areas of my brush lettering designs.  Plus they have 90+ colors.  So you are sure to find the look you want. I love how easy the Sharpie brush pens flow.  They brush tip is really flexible, and it can help create a different and fun brush lettering look.

I love how smooth my brush pens write on this marker paper .  I think it helps keep my tips from fraying, so they last longer, plus if I’m using the sharpie brush pens, they don’t bleed through.  Plus I only have to print the brush lettering practice sheets once and cover it with the marker paper to copy and practice the letters and strokes.

3 basic tips to get started with brush lettering

1. Louise explains that, traditionally, when you’re brush lettering, you apply a heavy stroke on the way down , and lighter pressure on the way up .

2. For beginners, Louise recommends drawing out ascender, descender, and baseline guidelines to help practice and define your proportions (she includes these guidelines in her worksheet).

3. Draft out your letters using a pencil first , this way you can make sure your words fit in the space before committing to the brush pen.

Let’s get started with the tutorial!

 1. What is brush lettering? 

Let’s define “brush lettering” by breaking it apart into the two words: “brush” and “lettering.”

• The Brush can be a brush pen, which is a felt-tip marker with a flexible tip, or an actual paintbrush with bristles. 
• Lettering can be broken down into hand lettering and calligraphy. The main difference is that in hand lettering, you “draw” the letters, but in calligraphy you “write” the letters and follow specific rules ( learn more about the difference here ) .

In this article, we’ll focus on using brush pens to do calligraphy. 

You only need two things to get started: a brush pen and paper. 

But you can’t just use any old paper you have sitting around. 

Why not? 

Most brush pens are felt-tipped, and they’re more fragile than they look.

Dragging them across rough surfaces, even paper that’s just slightly textured can lead to fraying.

This breaks down the tip and makes it harder to get crisp, thin lines, and can damage the pen.

So what can we do to avoid this? 

It’s simple–use smooth paper!

Here are some of our favorites:

• High-quality printer paper, such as HP Premium 32lb
• Marker or tracing paper, such as Canson Marker Paper
• A pad of very smooth paper, such as Rhodia pads

However, you’ll also want to keep in mind the absorbency.

The highly absorbent paper will drain the ink from the pen.

Choosing a smooth, low-absorbent paper will make your brush pens last the longest!

When choosing paper, you’ll also want to think about using guidelines.

You can use a pencil and ruler to draw out straight lines, or you can print guide sheets directly on the paper.

Another option is to print a sheet of guides to use with a light pad, or underneath transparent marker paper. 

If you keep reading, you’ll see a worksheet with different guide sheet options later on.

Let’s talk about the next supply you need – brush pens.

When it comes to brush pens, there are hundreds of options. It can be intimidating, but we’ll break it down for you now. 

We at Loveleigh Loops surveyed over 2,000 letterers about their favorite brush pens, and the top two results were the Pentel Sign Touch and Tombow Dual Brush pen. 

Both options are easy to use, easy to find, and reasonably priced.

The Pentel is smaller and has a firmer nib than the Tombow Dual.

A few of our other favorite brush pens include:

Zig Brushables.

They’re dual-sided with TWO brushes, one light and one dark of the same hue. They’re also pigment ink, so they’re long-lasting and fade-resistant. The nibs seem to resist fraying more than other similar-sized brush pens.

Faber-Castell Pitt Artist brush pen.

These pens are pigmented and fade-resistant. They come in a variety of lovely colors and are a medium-sized nib. The nibs are reversible, which makes them long-lasting. 

Sakura Koi Coloring brush pen.

The Kois come in a variety of really unique colors. The barrel of the pen is short, making them perfect for portability, and they can create a nice contrast in line thickness.

Zig Fudebiyori.

An excellent choice for medium-sized lettering. The nib is firm and creates delicate hairlines. 

Tombow Fudenosuke.

This small-nib brush pen is a staple in the lettering world. It comes in a hard and soft option, perfect for different levels of flexibility and ink flow. They’re durable and create beautiful hairlines. 

Ecoline Watercolor Brushes.

Probably the juiciest brush pens ever! The Ecolines create stunning natural gradients and have reversible nibs to make them long-lasting. They come in both bright and pastel colors.

3. Why are brush pens great for lettering?

Brush pens are great for lettering because they are much easier to get started compared with a dip pen and ink.

The learning curve is much lower as well as the maintenance aspect – more on that later on.

Besides the fact that they are very beginner friendly, here are a couple of more reasons why we love brush pens.

First off, they come in a variety of colors and ink types.

You can create some beautiful color schemes and neat visual effects! 

Here’s an example of blending, which can be done with water-based pens:

But that’s not all… you can also get a range of sizes for the brush tip.

Depending on how big you want to write, you can get fine-tipped pens (like the Pentel Sign Touch) and larger ones (like the Tombow Dual Brush).

Also, some pens are more flexible than others.

If you’re very heavy-handed, you might have more success with a firm tip.

Very flexible tips are typically harder control and take lots of practice to feel comfortable with.

By the way, practicing pressure control with brush pens can translate to other tools, such as paintbrushes or dip pens.

The variety of colors, sizes, and flexibility makes it easy to find a pen that fits your needs.

Whether you’re just practicing, or working on a project, or creating something to share on Instagram, there’s a pen for you.

More about that later!

Oh, and one last reason we love brush pens:

they are SO much more portable (and mess-free) than inks or paints.

You can just throw a few in your bag, and you’re good to go 🙂 Now let’s talk about how to actually *use* them.

In case you don’t have a brush pen and you cannot get one, you can always try to do calligraphy with a pencil.

 4. How do you use a brush for calligraphy?

The thing that makes script lettering look like calligraphy is the variety of stroke weights. 

In other words, some parts of the letters are thicker than others. 

So how do you do that with a brush?

The key is to change the amount of pressure you’re writing with.

By using lighter pressure (just touch the tip of the brush to the paper), you can create a thin line. Pressing down harder on the brush will create a thicker stroke.

Sounds easy enough!

But when you go to try it yourself, you might be unsure of which parts you’re supposed to make thicker.

Here’s the secret: Thick down, thin up.

On the word “strength,” you can see that the areas where the pen moves downward have a thicker line than the other parts of the letters:

The way to achieve this is to use more pressure on the downstrokes, and less on the upstrokes.

This creates a contrast between the strokes and gives it the look of calligraphy.

So what does the pen look like on thick versus thin strokes?

Let’s take a side-view look.

The first picture below shows light pressure, with just the tip of the pen touching the page.

In the second picture, more pressure is applied so that more of the nib comes in contact with the paper.

Don’t be nervous about pressing down on the flexible tip.

As long as you’re holding your pen at about 45-degrees to the page (and not too upright), you won’t damage it by pressing down.

In practice, using different amounts of pressure on the letters will create a calligraphy effect.

Let’s look at another example in the word “extraordinary” below.

You can see that anywhere the pen would travel in a downward direction, the stroke is thicker.

Everywhere else, it’s thin.

On curves, such as the top and bottom of the oval in the letter ‘a,’ there are smooth transitions:

the stroke gradually gets thicker or thinner.

On these transitions, the pen gradually changes from light to heavy pressure, or vice-versa.

Another characteristic of calligraphy is slant and proportions.

Using guide sheets helps with both of those! See how:

While traditional calligraphy scripts have strict rules on the slant angle and how tall the ascender/descender line is versus the x-height, there’s a lot more flexibility in modern brush lettering.

Whatever proportion and slant look best to you works for us, as long as you maintain consistency!

We’ll talk more about how to practice consistency later in this article.

Okay, now that we know more about what brush lettering looks like, let’s talk about how to hold the brush pen.

Watch any brush lettering artist on Instagram, and you’ll start to see that there are lots of different ways to hold the pen. 

So the answer is: there isn’t just one “correct” way to do it.

What’s important is that you have a grip that is comfortable and allows you to make contrasting thick and thin strokes. 

Start by holding the pen the same way you write with any regular pencil.

Then, make three adjustments:

• Relax your grip. Holding too tightly can cause pain in your hand.
• Move back. Make sure you’re not holding too closely to the tip. Your fingers should be an inch or so away from the tip of the pen.
• Angle your pen. Pay attention to the angle of the pen compared to the paper. Many people tend to hold it too upright, which makes it harder to get contrasting stroke weights, and can damage the pen. Shoot for about 45-degrees to the surface of the table (but you don’t need to get out a protractor!)

It takes some time getting used to using a brush pen for lettering, but keeping those three tips in mind will help.

 6. How to overcome the most common brush pen struggles 

Now, brush lettering can look really easy when you follow tons of talented artists who have been doing this for years.

But, it can actually be quite challenging to get started. 

Based on our survey of hundreds of beginner brush letterers, here are the most common struggles:

• Knowing which supplies to use
• Pressure control (shaky upstrokes)
• Transitioning from thick to thin strokes 
• Consistency
• Knowing what to practice 

Hopefully, our section about supplies earlier in this article (and the bonus at the end!) help you with Struggle #1.

Now for the hard part: pressure control, thick-to-thin transitions, and consistency.

The key to solving Struggles #2-5 is practice… …but you have to do the right kind of calligraphy practice .

Luckily, we made a resource to help.

It’s our brush pen warm-up worksheet, and you can get it for free.

But first, we’ll go over some warm-up drills as well as the 7 basic calligraphy strokes.

Once we explain you how to do these drills, you’ll be able to download our brush pen warm-up worksheet – for both big and small brush pens!

It’s time to get your tools out and get to work.

 7. Brush Pen Warm-Up Drills

As you do these strokes, we’d like to remind you of these 3 things:

• Hold your pen at a 45-degree angle to the paper (i.e., not too upright)
• Make your downstrokes thick by applying more pressure. The upstrokes will be thin, requiring less pressure on the pen
• Practice on smooth paper

And we also have a BONUS tip for you: 

• Go slowly! Really focus on the pressure you’re applying

Let’s get into the drills. We’ll start with downstrokes. 

Warm-Up #1: Downstrokes

Place your pen at the top guideline and press the tip of the pen into the page. As you draw the stroke, apply an even amount of pressure to produce a thick line. Create these at a slight angle to the baseline rather than straight upright.

Practice a full row of these and work on keeping them consistent.

Depending on the pen, you might hear a squeaky sound when you make the downstrokes—that’s fine!

As long as you’re keeping the pen angled at 45-degrees and using smooth paper, you won’t ruin the pen.

Warm-Up #2: Upstrokes

This drill is the complete opposite of the downstrokes! 

We’ll start at the bottom and move upwards, following a slight slant.

Instead of applying pressure, you’ll need to use a lighter touch.

Don’t worry if the thin strokes look or feel shaky—that’s totally normal and will improve with practice. 

After practicing thick and thin strokes separately, it’s time to combine them with curves. 

Warm-Up #3: Curved Strokes

For the first drill, you’ll start from the baseline and go up, then curve around at the top.

As you start going back down, add pressure to create a thick line, then let off the pressure once you hit the baseline again.

Continue back up with a thin stroke. 

The second curved drill is the opposite.

Starting with a thick downstroke, curving around to a thin upstroke, and then up and over to a thick downstroke.

Lastly, try creating ovals.

Start at the top and move counter-clockwise.

The left part will be thick and the right, thin.

Next? Practice, practice, practice!

Getting your hand used to create strokes with varying amounts of pressure is so important.

It’s best if you can get consistent strokes within these drills before you even move into letters.

Once you have them down, it will make writing with a brush pen much easier.

Fundamental Strokes

When you’re more comfortable using your pen after practicing the warm-up drills, we at Loveleigh Loops encourage you to try out the fundamental strokes of the lowercase alphabet.

You’ll see that these strokes are simply a combination of the warm-up drills you just learned.

The 7 fundamental strokes, sometimes called basic strokes, are:

• entrance stroke
• compound curve
• ascending loop
• descending loop

It’s important to practice these shapes because they make up the lowercase letters of the alphabet.

For example, you’ll find the oval in lowercase “a” and “o”, and the ascending loop in letters like “h” and “k.”

You’ll practice your thick downstrokes, thin upstrokes, and curves/transitions.

10. BONUS: Brush pen characteristics (ink type, color selection, size, flexibility, duality, etc.)  

While you can get started with just a single brush pen and some smooth paper, if you’re anything like us, you want to try out ALL the pens.

And there are so many to choose from! 

It can be overwhelming, so we’ll break down all the characteristics for you.

Once you understand these, you’ll be able to choose which one will work best for your project. 

Here are the brush pen characteristics: 

Nib type: Felt versus Bristle

Felt-tip brush pens are a solid tip made of fibers that look like a sponge.

These are our favorites for beginners because they’re easier to control.

Bristle-tip brushes have individual strands that come together to form the brush.

They’re usually more challenging to control, but you can get unique brushy textures with them.

You can also use bristle-tip brushes on textured surfaces, whereas felt-tip pens should be used only on smooth paper.

The majority of popular brush pens are felt-tip, and those are also the kind that we prefer.

Flexibility: Soft to Firm

One of the hardest parts about starting with brush pens is learning how to control them.

Using a firm, stiff nib allows for more natural control on the thin strokes because the tip returns to its original shape after applying pressure.

Firmer tips require that you press harder on the pen to create a thick stroke.

Flexible nibs are softer and react more quickly to changes in pressure.

This can make it harder to control the thin upstrokes, but also allows for beautiful, juicy thick strokes.

Ink type: Dye or Pigment

Now we’re getting into some chemistry!

Dye-based means that the colorant is dissolved into the ink solution (usually water), which pigment inks have tiny, insoluble particles that don’t dissolve completely.

What you actually need to know about this difference is that dye-based inks are generally easier to blend, but are more prone to fading.

Pigment-based inks resist water and light, so they’re longer lasting.

However, they’re typically harder to blend.

This video demonstrates the difference.

The top two brush pens are water-based and blend easily, even after drying.

The third is a pigmented ink and doesn’t blend at all:

Brush pens come in a variety of sizes, from extra-fine to extra-large.

Note: we’re referring to the actual nib, not the size of the barrel of the brush pen.

Smaller nibs are great for detail work and smaller scale lettering, such as envelopes, and are typically firmer.

Larger tip pens are generally juicier because more ink can flow out, and they can range from firm to soft.

Even though smaller pens can seem easier to learn with, we personally believe that it’s best to start with a larger nib so that you can see all of the strokes and connections and get used to pressure control.

It’s easier to cover up your mistakes with a small nib, or not notice them at all, which makes it more challenging to transition to a larger size later.

We’re lucky to live in a world where so many brush pen colors exist!

While some brands only offer black, many provide at least a few color options.

Some have over 50 (!), and you can also find sets, such as pastels or jewel-tones, that go well together.

Other characteristics

Some brush pens are double-sided, with a bullet tip on the other end, or even another brush tip in a lighter shade.

You can also find metallic inks, which show up beautifully on dark paper.

 11. Bonus – Brush pen storage tips

In general, the best way to store your brush pens is laying down flat, NOT standing upright.

This is so that the brush tip doesn’t dry out (if you stored them brush side up) or get over-saturated (if brush side down).

To keep them laying flat, you can store your brush pens inside of drawers or on shelves.

For a more organized solution, you can search for marker storage shelves or create your own DIY storage. 

Two notable exceptions to this rule are the Karin Brushmarker Pro pens, which must be stored upright, and Tombow Dual Brush Pens, which can be stored upright.

You can store either of these options standing up with the cap at the top in the stand that comes with the full set or in cups.

Hi. I came looking for a beginner’s guide to lettering with brush pens, and stumbled upon this. Very helpful, thanks. You mention that brush pens should be used on smooth paper. My intention was to build a relationship with brush pens, and then also use them for homemade cards. I would assume then, that’s not a good idea to use on regular blank cards/ cardpaper?

Thank you, Maheen! Yes you can still use them on regular blank cards/cardpaper. You just need to be aware that rougher and less absorbent paper can consume your brush pens faster than proper paper.

While brush pen lettering can be lovely, I wish people would *call* it brush pen lettering… brush lettering uses……a brush, not a pen. and is a whole different skill… and a much harder skill to master.

Thanks for your comment, Tisha. I agree with you and I think that you are technically correct. However, there are a few other things that I took into consideration for the title of this guide. The main one being that brush lettering has become a popular term for this particular style, and it’s recognizable in the community. I wouldn’t even call it lettering but rather calligraphy – I believe that hand lettering is a totally different form of art than calligraphy. Most popular brush pens today are made with felt tips and i think it’s their ease of use that makes it so popular – especially among beginners. We also have bristle brush pens with the long synthetic hairs – like the fude Pentel brush. I completely agree with you that it’s a much harder skill to master – it requires a different hold, more concentration and a well-developed foundation. I am not a professional and i might be talking nonsense here, but i believe it would be easier to start learning the basics using a felt tip brush pen and then move towards a bristle brush and learn how to operate that tool. What do you think? What is the best hand lettering practice paper?

Make sure to use really smooth paper to print these lettering worksheets. This will prevent fraying of your pen tips.

When you run your palm on top of the paper it should feel smooth to the touch and allow the pens to glide easily with minimal resistance. HOW TO PRACTICE LETTERING:

To practice using these lettering worksheets you will need,

• A good quality, smooth finish printer paper: I print these lettering sheets onto HP Printer Paper, Premium Choice LaserJet Copy Paper, 32lb . The printer I use is a  Canon PIXMA Wireless one that works great for me!
• Another way to use these worksheets- place a sheet of  marker paper  or  tracing paper  on top of the printout and then letter onto that.
• I would recommend the Tombow Dual Brush Pens for large lettering. You do not need the whole 96 color set (though they are awesome to have!) but start with a 10 color set (like this bright , pastel , or galaxy one).
• Further, in your 10 pack of pens, I would recommend that you use the color you like least and start your lettering journey with it. It will fray, but you will learn.
• For smaller lettering I would suggest you start with the Fudenosuke Brush pens – either soft or hard tip. I had more success using the hard tip initially.
• For Monoline or faux calligraphy , any gel pen would work.

Tips for Brush Lettering

Brush lettering did not come easy to me. It has taken me a while to get to where I am now and I still have plenty of room for improvement. Here’s some tips that have helped me.

• If you’re having trouble with paper and brush pen, try working on an iPad if you have one. It’s so much easier to erase when you mess up. Plus using the Apple pencil mimics a regular pen, so you still get the muscle memory required.
• Do drills to warm up. Down strokes should be heavy and up strokes should be light. Horizontal strokes should be light as well.
• Practice, practice, practice. Brush lettering is closer to drawing than writing, so it takes a lot of practice to acquire those skills.

• Tombow Brush Markers
• Tombow Fudenosuke Brush Pens

Brush markers are fun to use because they come in so many pretty colors, but the Fudenosuke brush pen is a bit easier to use and control.

Cardstock is thicker than regular paper and can help prevent bleed through.

Brush Lettering Practice Worksheets

These lettering worksheets come in both landscape and portrait orientation. I made landscape worksheets to use with Procreate. For me, using an iPad in landscape mode is so much more comfortable. Plus there’s more space to practice.

If you use these with an iPad, import them in as a photo (or file depending on where you stored them.) Then create a new layer to practice on. Clear the layer as needed.

I find that using a bright color makes the lettering stand out even more.

These worksheets include a blank lettering sheet and a page with drills to learn how to control the brush.

I’m using them with my newest lettering brush pen for Procreate , which I’m loving. If you haven’t tried lettering on Procreate, I highly recommend it!

Brush Pen Calligraphy Basics- Plus Free Printable Practice Sheets!

Alrighty friend, this post is a doozy. All about getting started with brush pen calligraphy. Before we get going I want to point out that I created a free printable practice sheet for you to have! Just click here to download .

Brush pen calligraphy has been taking the world by storm lately! And for good reason! Brush pens are so fun because you can create a huge variety of lettering styles with just one pen! (If you have seen my post on 10 easy hand lettering styles , every one of those styles can be done by using only a brush pen! ) They also don’t leave much of a mess, and generally are pretty easy to learn to work with!

It really is a fun skill to learn because it can push your art to the next level. For example, learning brush lettering has completely changed the way I do Bible journaling. Before, I would only apply some basic watercolor and write the key verse down in my normal handwriting. Not that there is anything wrong with that!!! But now I use brush calligraphy, or brush lettering, in 99.9% of my Bible journaling pages, and I just feel a bit prouder of my page by doing so. I know that God thinks every page I do, no matter what it looks like, is beautiful -because it’s a reflecting of my love for him and his word- But we all want to make our art as pretty as possible right?

So I thought it about time that I give you a basic overview of what brush pen calligraphy is and how to do it!

I think that it is easier to both show, and learn, how to do brush calligraphy through a visual, so I made a video! But I know sometimes I need the steps in writing as well, so feel free to keep scrolling to learn more!

Picking your Brush Pen

A brush pen is essentially a marker with a bendy tip. Some brush pens have bristles like a paint brush, but most have a felt tip (like a normal marker). I personally prefer the felt-tipped ones, but that could be a fun thing to play around with!

Perhaps the favorite among all brush calligraphers, and the most recommended brush pen for beginners, is the Tombow Fudenosuke Brush pens. I have talked about them before in my post on “Best Pens for Bible Journaling” but I really just can’t rave about this pen enough. You can get a pack here on Amazon (affiliate link) That has both the hard tip and soft tip Fudenosuke. The two tips are basically the same, just the tip of the soft tip is more bendy so it can create slightly larger downstrokes (I’ll get to what downstrokes are in a second…) The soft tip can be a little harder to control for some, so I usually recommend starting with the hard tip. Or just try both ;).

Bonus- the Tombow Fudenosuke also does not bleed through Journaling Bible pages and it is waterproof!

There’s a bunch of other really great brush pens as well, such as Pentel Touch brush pens and Tombow Dual brush pens which come in a bunch of different colors. These, however, are not the best for Bible journaling as they tend to bleed through an unprepared page. They are also not waterproof.

I recommend starting out with the Fudenosuke and then as you get more comfortable with the technique, branching out and trying other types of brush pens. The three I mentioned are just a very few out of the available options out there in stores.

What is calligraphy?

Before you get started you need to understand the foundation of calligraphy and what it is. There are 3 types of calligraphy:

Faux calligraphy – Which I have a tutorial on here and definitely recommend starting with; as you don’t need any fancy supplies, just a normal pen.

Brush pen calligraphy – Which we are talking about today

Dip-pen calligraphy – This is the original and traditional form of calligraphy, using a nib and ink. As the name suggests, you dip your nib into the ink to write with. This is how I started learning calligraphy, and while it is beautiful, it is not the most practical and is quite difficult to get the hang of. It also doesn’t work too well in Bible journaling, as you could imagine.

So, all three forms of calligraphy are based on the same three strokes. The downstroke, the upstroke, and the midstroke.

They are all fairly self-explanatory.

– The downstroke is the most important. It is when your pen is gliding downward. The key is that the downstroke is thicker than the rest. In faux calligraphy, this thicker downstroke is created by manually thickening it up after writing the letter. But in brush pen or dip pen calligraphy, this downstroke is created by applying pressure to you pen when going downward.

– The upstroke is, of course, when your stroke is going upward. For this stroke, you only want to apply just enough pressure that the tip of your pen touches the paper. You want to keep it as thin as possible! This creates that beautiful look of the thin upstrokes and thick downstrokes that calligraphy is all about.

– The midstroke would be like the crossbar in the “t” or “H” this one is usually kept pretty thin but does not matter so much as the other strokes.

So the main concept of creating brush calligraphy?

When your brush is going down apply pressure- when your brush is going up, apply very little pressure. .

It sounds simple! And really it is, It just takes some practice to get a hang of it.

I suggest trying it out using the free worksheets I made. On the first page, there are common shapes that are used to form letters. When you see the arrow on my example going down, push on that pen! When you see the arrow going up, try to see how tiny you can make that line.

Some key things to note:

• Brush pens work best by holding them at a 45-degree angle, as you could see in the images above. The WAY you hold your pen is totally up to you and how you feel comfortable, just try playing around with the angle.
• Do your best to apply even pressure through the whole stroke, otherwise, you will end up with wonky letters.
• If it is too hard to go from applying pressure to lessening that pressure in one go (such as a downstroke into and upstroke; or the other way around) without lifting the pen; there is nothing wrong with pausing, lifting your pen, and then starting again!
• All it takes is practice practice practice!

I first released this simple brush pen worksheet in 2015. Little did I know that it would become one of the most popular printables on TPK! With 131,500 downloads and counting, many a brush pen enthusiast has worked through the exercises in this worksheet. Today, I want to talk about what you can learn from filling out the Free Brush Pen worksheet, as well as other brush pen resources that you can take advantage of on the TPK site!

Why Use Brush Pens?

Brush pens are a delightfully efficient, mess-free cousin of dip pen calligraphy. Just like with the dip pen, you can vary your pressure on a brush pen in order to create a combination of thick and thin strokes. Unlike the dip pen, however, the brush pen is a bit thicker. It allows you to write very quickly!

Many people consider brush pens to be easier to use than dip pens are. That’s probably because everyone has used a marker before at some point in their lives, so when you pick up a brush pen, you’re handling a writing instrument that’s (mostly) familiar! I can attest to the fact that they’re family-friendly, so they offer an easy way to get in some creative time when you’re hanging out with your kids.

Who Should Use the Free Brush Pen Worksheet?

When I designed the Free Brush Pen Worksheet, I had the brush pen semi-beginner in mind. The worksheet doesn’t include copious instructions as far as how to use a brush pen, but it does have plenty of exercises for people who understand the gist of it! It’s four pages long and covers the very basics: stroke practice, curves, and a whimsical alphabet.

If you’re a beginner, I encourage you to watch the video below! In the video, you’ll get a closer look at brush pen upstrokes and downstrokes, learn about the grip to maintain on your pen, and see how to make the curlicues featured in the worksheet .

Premium Brush Pen Worksheet

Note that the Free Brush Pen Worksheet is very basic. If you feel that you could benefit from comprehensive instruction and practice, then the premium version  of this worksheet (pictured below) will really help! It includes 100+ pages of practice and several videos.

I think that the number one secret to success with a brush pen is remembering to pick the brush pen up as you write! There are strategic junctures in each letter where you can lift your pen from the page momentarily to give yourself the chance to make stroke contrast. Those junctures may not be intuitive at first, which is why the premium version of the worksheet includes specific letter formation instructions.

Which Brush Pens to Buy

There are many brush pens to choose from. While I often use Tombow brush pens , I would recommend starting with the Pigma MB brush pen , which I find is easier to manage. You can also begin learning brush pen calligraphy with ordinary (Crayola) markers , which are budget-friendly and widely available!

How to Practice Brush Pen Calligraphy

While worksheets will help to learn brush pen calligraphy, nothing helps you to improve like making projects! For example, you can try creating artwork like the piece shown below for a friend or family member.

Don’t be afraid to experiment with making other paper projects like cards, envelopes, and gift tags as well! You can learn how to make the birthday card pictured below in this tutorial .

One of my favorite ways to practice brush lettering without the pressure of doing it right is creating a daily diary where you write just one quote, expression, word a day. You can choose something that inspired you, something you want to inspire yourself with, or anything really.

And then you just write it however you’d like. There’s no pressure for it to come out nice. Just draw it.

I even designed a journal for this purpose with a fun hand-lettered cover, and dot grid pages for you to draw on. It has a small spot for the date too, as well as an introduction that shares how to keep such a journal (which makes it a great gift too!)

Brush Lettering and Beyond: Lettering Worksheets and Practice Routine

Welcome to the Brush Lettering and Beyond Blog Series. This is Part 2. This post will guide you through practicing brush lettering and setting up a routine for success. This is a 5-part series. You can find the rest of the series at the bottom of this post.

In Part 1 of the Brush Lettering and Beyond series, I shared basic pen strokes, grips, and brush lettering materials. In this post, I’ll be showing you how to apply those techniques to your practice and helping you set up a practice routine. Roll your eyes if you think homework is for kiddos and no one else. It’s fine. But, I promise you, if you want to learn brush lettering, you are going to have to commit to practicing. Homework, my friend.

Practicing Your Hand Lettering

The easiest way to practice hand lettering, in the beginning, is to use practice worksheets. They are often set up with penmanship lines and then faint writing guides you can write over with your own brush pen. What makes these worksheets great is the ability to go slow and feel the curves. You get to practice the same letter over and over, following a guide that will allow you to get in the habit of making those strokes.

Each of the worksheets below has a specific style of lettering. While you’re learning, it’s best to follow the guides. But as you feel more confident in your abilities, you can branch out from the guide and create more of less of an angle in your writing. Add bounce or embellishments (this will be shared in an upcoming post in the series). But, for now, stick with the basics of the worksheets.

With that, there are tons of fabulous brush lettering worksheets online that you can print out and practice on as much as you like. For more in-depth content and instruction, you can purchase one of these best-selling modern calligraphy books on Amazon:

But, for the sake of your wallet, I have created a free printable worksheet you are welcome to download and use. It contains 5 pages with lowercase brush letters and some word practice at the end. You also get a blank piece of penmanship paper for practicing. Get it here .

Remember, the two things you want to think about when practicing brush lettering are 1). the angle of your pen, and 2). the pressure you are using on your upstrokes and downstrokes. If you need a refresher, visit Part 1 of this blog series.

I often use the same style brush lettering, and therefore, my worksheets may not appeal to you. So, I’ve scoured the web — mainly Pinterest, and found some really great brush lettering worksheets from other bloggers. Check them out and find the style that works best for you.

Creating Your Own Practice Worksheets

Guess what? Creating printable worksheets isn’t just for bloggers and graphic designers. You can do it in a few super simple steps, with your own choice of font and words. How cool is that?

The first thing you want to do is head to Dafont.com . This website has pretty much every font you can imagine. Then, go to the brush menu . This will bring up all the brush style fonts they have. As you can see, they also have calligraphy fonts, handwritten, graffiti, and tons more to choose from. This site is my addiction.

Now, your new font is installed and you can start making your lettering worksheet. Open a Word document or other word processing program. Now, select your new font, make the font bigger (I used 36 pt) and then choose a light grey letter color. Type out the words you want to practice, leaving some extra space between the words.

Now, save and print your worksheet, and start practicing.

Setting Up a Practice Routine

Having and creating brush lettering practice worksheets is great. But, if you aren’t using them, it’s not going to do you much good. And chances are, it’s been at least a couple years since you had to do homework (there’s that word again). Well, it’s time get into a practice routine. Your homework is to use these worksheets consistently. You can choose how much time you want to spend practicing each day.

I know that making time for creative practice can be hard if you have a full-time job or are a stay-at-home-mom. I get it completely ! Between my two kids, I’m a walking errand machine and often forget to do things for myself. But, with a few simple tools, I’ve managed to set aside some time each day to improve my skills and relax with drawing, hand lettering, or setting up my bullet journal.

How to Make a Routine that Works for You

Decide how much time you can dedicate each day. Choose a time of day that will give you the best shot at uninterrupted time. For me, this is usually late at night after my kids are in bed. Then, either use the Be Focused app, your phone’s timer, or one of these Miracle Cube Timers , and set your time. During this time, do not answer texts, look at Facebook, or check your email. Every time you look at a computer or phone screen, your brain does some funky thing where it pretty much resets and you lose your focus. Disclaimer: I’m not a neurologist, so I may be speaking from my rear-end.

During your time, work on your basic upstrokes and downstrokes. Focus on the angle you hold your pen. And use your worksheets to practice letters and words. Once you have the basics down, start practicing your lettering on unlined and unguided paper. Try different styles. Use different amounts of pressure and angles. Challenge yourself to practice for your chosen time every day for two-weeks. You’ll be incredibly surprised how much you can improve in two weeks.
