Bradford SAFE Taskforce Highlighted as Model of Good Practice

St Giles’s work as part of the Bradford SAFE Taskforce has been recognised in guidance published by the Youth Endowment Fund (YEF) to help prevent children’s involvement in violence.

St Giles leads the mentoring element of the Taskforce, which was established in 2022 with funding from the Department of Education to bring together a group of local schools to reduce children’s vulnerability to serious violence.

The YEF’s guidance, published in May 2024, found that:

“Under this bold, new initiative, a range of carefully curated, evidence-informed interventions have been commissioned across 18 schools in the city. These align with the YEF’s new guidance and all have the aim of improving children’s attendance, behaviour and engagement with their education.”

It also found that mentoring programmes, such as the one delivered by St Giles, reduce violence:

“Structured mentoring programmes that foster trusting relationships, raise self-esteem and provide emotional support can make a big difference. Research shows that, on average, they reduce violence by 21% and all offending by 14%.”

The report found that in 2023:

  • 1 in 6 children reported being victims of violence in the preceding 12 months.
  • 1 in 7 children reported committing violence in the same period.

Continuing, the report said:

“Violence has wider impacts on children’s education. Last year, 20% of children said they had missed school due to feeling unsafe, while 18% said they found it harder to concentrate at school due to violence or the fear of violence. We also know that violence happens in schools, colleges and AP (approved premises.) In Autumn 2023, 67% of teachers across English primary and secondary schools reported that a physical assault had occurred between children in the previous term. Forty-three per cent reported physical assaults against teachers and staff, 15% reported that a child had brought a weapon into school and 12% reported that a sexual assault had occurred against a child.”

“The Youth Endowment Fund (YEF) is a charity with a mission that matters. We exist to prevent children and young people from becoming involved in violence. We do this by finding out what works and building a movement to put this knowledge into practice. The charity was established in 2019 with a 10-year, £200 million endowment from the Home Office.”

SAFE Taskforce: £30 million targeted support to keep most vulnerable young people engaged in education and attending lessons

COUNTY LINES VIOLENCE HOTSPOTS TO BENEFIT FROM TARGETED SUPPORT

New taskforces are being rolled out to keep young people engaged with their education and avoid them becoming involved in county lines violence or criminal activity.

Young people across England who are most at risk of serious violence or gang exploitation will benefit from targeted support to keep them engaged in education and attending lessons.

The new initiative,  backed by £30 million , is a part of a rollout of 10 ‘SAFE’ (Support, Attend, Fulfil, Exceed) taskforces in ‘hotspot’ areas, where incidents of serious youth violence are highest.

These will be led by local schools, bringing headteachers together to support vulnerable young people, and avoid them becoming involved in county lines and criminal activity.

The investment will help focus on improving pupils’ attendance, reducing the likelihood of young people being permanently excluded from school, keeping young people focused on their education.

Children and Families Minister Will Quince said:

“Keeping young people engaged with their education has never been more important. These taskforces are helping school leaders and vital support services work together to support some of the most vulnerable young people across the country, helping to keep them on the right track and stop them missing lessons.

“Through the work of these taskforces, combined with our ongoing SEND Review, the independent review of children’s social care, and our investment in Alternative Provision and other specialist support, this government is levelling up opportunities for all young people to help fulfil their potential and achieve better outcomes.”

The government have also today announced the 22 schools benefitting from Alternative Provision Specialist Taskforces, which work directly with young people in Alternative Provision settings to offer intensive support from experts, including mental health professionals, family workers, and speech and language therapists.

Bringing this wider range of professionals together aims to reduce the risk to these pupils of being exploited and entering a life of crime, and helping them move into further education, employment or training after they finish school.

In September government announced that youn g people at risk of exploitation would be supported through the SAFE and AP specialist taskforces.

The government is taking significant action to improve outcomes for all children and young people, including the most vulnerable and disadvantaged, through:

  • Extending the role of  Virtual School Heads  – who work to raise educational standards for children in care – so there will be a local champion for children with a social worker in every local authority meaning more targeted support for these children to help improve how they engage with their education.
  • Working with families who require early help through our  Supporting Families programme , for example with attendance difficulties, but otherwise wouldn’t meet the threshold for social care intervention.
  • Investing £17 million towards  improving mental health and wellbeing support , including £9.5m to offer senior mental health lead training to around a third of all state schools and colleges in 2021/22, helping them to implement effective holistic approaches to mental health and wellbeing. This is on top of £79 million to increase mental health provision, including more mental health support teams working with schools and colleges.
  • The ongoing  SEND Review , which will be setting out plans for reform of the AP system that will improve outcomes for all children and young people including those in unregistered settings.

We are investing £10 million in behaviour hubs which launched in April and will enable schools and multi-academy trusts (MATs) with exemplary behaviour cultures and practices to work in partnership with those that want to improve their behaviour culture.

Earlier this year the Department for Education also announced an additional  £8m for the AP Transition Fund  for 2021/22 to support more young people in AP to move into the next stage of their education, work or training after they leave school, receiving further mentoring, pastoral support and careers guidance.

The  Independent Care Review  will provide important information to help address major challenges as part of the wholesale independent review of children’s social care to radically reform the system, improving the lives of England’s most vulnerable children so they realise the benefits of a stable, loving home.

Project Co-Ordinator, SAFE Taskforce (Bradford) - Exceed Academies Trust

safe task force bradford

KIRKLEES COUNCIL ARE ADVERTISING THIS ROLE ON BEHALF OF EXCEED ACADEMIES TRUST

Exceed Academies Trust has been selected by the DfE as one of 10 education providers located across the country to establish a SAFE Taskforce in order to tackle serious violence by re engaging young people in education through the commissioning of effective interventions.

The Project Co-Ordinator is a key role in the delivery of the SAFE (Support, Attend, Fulfil and Exceed) Taskforce for Bradford supporting the Government’s Beating Crime Plan which was published in July 2021.  £3.7million of investment funding has been identified in order to establish and deliver the project, which is expected to support 600 young people across the city over the next 3 years.

The Taskforce, comprising around 15 locally based mainstream secondary schools, will use the funding provided by the DfE to invest in and commission school focused interventions to reduce involvement in serious violence, improve attendance at school, improve behaviour in school and within the community and improve social and emotional regulation and well-being.

Reporting into the Commissioning Lead for the programme, you will co-ordinate and manage the SAFE Taskforce to improve the outcomes of children who are at risk of becoming involved in serious youth violence. This will involve working with the Commissioning Lead to ensure interventions are delivered to a high quality, on time and to budget, monitoring risks for the programme, reporting to DfE and the evaluators and providing high-level secretariat support for meetings.  This role is key to enabling the SAFE Taskforce to come together as a successful group and ensure that it produces an ambitious delivery plan and meets milestones within it

The successful candidate will have knowledge of local and national issues, which affect the students we support in Bradford and appropriate educational and wider social interventions required to engage students in education.

We expect that the selected candidate will be a highly motivated leader who is able to demonstrate a history of effective project management experience within a children’s service or education environment.  Successful experience of working with multiple key stakeholders to ensure and manage effective delivery of complex projects would be a distinct advantage.

This is a unique opportunity for existing staff to work on a Trust wide DfE funded project developing their leadership careers within the Trust. The successful candidate will utilise their skills and experience to work collaboratively on behalf of the Trust across Bradford, engaging with other secondary schools and 3rd party providers to deliver a bespoke range of interventions with the intention of increasing engagement in education and as a result reducing serious violence across the city.

Exceed Academies Trust believes in equal opportunities for all staff. As part of that commitment, all vacancies will be advertised and filled through a transparent recruitment and selection process.

Internal candidates should submit an expression of interest by the closing date in order for their application to be considered.  External candidates should complete an application form, which should be downloaded from our website  www.exceedacademiestrust.co.uk .

Closing date : Tuesday 26 April 2022 at 10.00am

Interviews : w/c 02 May 2022

Please submit applications via email to [email protected]

Increasing our reach in Bradford as part of the SAFE Taskforce

From january 2023 we are delighted to be working with bradford safe taskforce delivering 10 new school-based practitioners in selected bradford secondary schools..

We are delighted to announce that following a proposal by School-Home Support to Bradford SAFE (Support, Attend, Fulfil and Exceed) Taskforce, funded by the Department for Education (DfE), we have been successful with securing funding for  10 new School-Home Support Practitioners  to work across Bradford for a year – with the potential to extend this work by an additional 18 months subject to a one year review.

This will greatly increase our capacity to deliver our services in Bradford, meaning we can reach many more children and families that would benefit from our support.

What is the Bradford SAFE Taskforce?

The Taskforce, comprising around 15 locally based mainstream secondary schools in Bradford, will use funding provided by the DfE to invest in and commission school focused interventions to reduce involvement in serious violence, improve attendance at school, improve behaviour in school and within the community and improve social and emotional regulation and well-being. School-Home Support will provide one of these interventions focussing on improving attendance.

Our practitioners will work across a number of schools in Bradford including, but not limited to, the Exceed Academies Trust. The Trust has been selected by the DfE as one of 10 education providers located across the country to establish a SAFE Taskforce in order to tackle serious violence by re-engaging young people in education through the commissioning of effective interventions.

How will we support the delivery of the Bradford SAFE taskforce?

Our Practitioners work with vulnerable children, young people and families to improve attendance, maximise educational opportunities and improve life chances.

Our practitioners achieve this by:

  • Building a bridge between school and home
  • Identifying and tackling barriers to learning with the whole family
  • Developing independence and resilience
  • Early identification of potential safeguarding risks and issues
  • Providing advice, advocacy and support for individuals
  • Building capacity in other organisations
  • Reporting, sharing information, cooperating and assisting in Child Protection enquiries

Thanks largely to our long standing partners Provident Financial Group and MariaMarina Foundation we already have an established team in Bradford. We have great insight into the challenges faced in the city and have forged strong partnerships with other organisations, which will allow us to hit the ground running.

“School-Home Support has contributed massively to improving our attendance. Their service offers another layer of support to our extremely vulnerable families.”

Vice Principal at Tong Leadership Academy

‘One In A Million has been working with School Home Support for the last 4 years. The support provided by the SHS practitioner, to both the school and families has been invaluable. SHS has become an intrinsic part of the support which school provides to families.’

Project Safe Neighborhoods Investigation Nets Twelve Arrests in Woonsocket

PROVIDENCE, RI – A four-month FBI Safe Streets Task Force Project Safe Neighborhoods investigation into the trafficking of fentanyl, cocaine, and crack cocaine on the streets of Woonsocket culminated today with the dismantling of at least three alleged drug trafficking conspiracies.

To date, twelve individuals have been charged, and law enforcement has seized four firearms, significant quantities of fentanyl pills, crack cocaine, cocaine, marijuana, and approximately $12,000 in cash.

Teams of federal, state, and local law enforcement agents and officers fanned out early this morning and arrested six individuals on federal criminal complaints, three individuals on state charges, and executed four federal court-authorized search warrants. Additionally, federal charges were unsealed today brought against an individual currently detained at the ACI.

Prior to today, members of the Safe Street Task Force arrested two individuals charged by way of federal criminal complaints and executed one federal court-authorized search warrant.

Leading up to today’s arrests, law enforcement made nearly two dozen undercover drug purchases and seized 1,964 fentanyl pills (332.9 grams),116.2 grams of powder fentanyl, 296 grams of marijuana, 244 grams of crack cocaine, 20 grams of powder cocaine, 3 firearms, and $1,800 U.S. currency.

Today, law enforcement seized a loaded 9 millimeter handgun, and approximately 144 grams of crack cocaine and 1,094 grams of cocaine, and $10,200 in cash.

Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) is the centerpiece of the Department of Justice’s violent crime reduction efforts. PSN is an evidence-based program proven to be effective at reducing violent crime. Through PSN, a broad spectrum of stakeholders work together to identify the most pressing violent crime problems in the community and develop comprehensive solutions to address them. As part of this strategy, PSN focuses enforcement efforts on the most violent offenders and partners with locally based prevention and reentry programs for lasting reductions in crime.

United States Attorney Aaron L. Weisman said, “These twelve arrests in Woonsocket should be looked upon as a warning to others: Be it in Woonsocket or in any community in Rhode Island where drug traffickers are peddling their poison and impacting the safety and quality of life in our neighborhoods, federal, state, and local law enforcement will team up and bring to bear the full-force of the Department of Justice’s Project Safe Neighborhoods initiative.”

“Today’s arrests exemplify the epitome of law enforcement agencies working together to target and dismantle drug trafficking organizations that threaten the safety and stability of our neighborhoods,” commented Special Agent in Charge of the FBI Boston Division Joseph R. Bonavolonta. “The residents of Woonsocket have been dealing with drugs and violence for far too long and the FBI Safe Streets Task Force will continue to use all of the tools we have at our disposal to make sure the people who are peddling these poisons on our streets—many of whom are repeat, violent offenders—are held accountable.”

Woonsocket Police Chief Thomas Oates added, “Working with our federal partners allows the Woonsocket Police Department to bring added resources to Woonsocket to combat illegal drug trafficking which is so harmful to our community. We will continue to use any and all resources available to us to continue to try and improve the quality of life and safety of the residents of the City of Woonsocket.”

  • supporting children with their wellbeing and behaviour
  • improving children’s attendance at school
  • keeping children engaged with their education

The guidance on evidence informed interventions:

  • sets out the evidence on tackling serious youth violence

Welcome

To reduce trauma to children and their families by providing a safe and supportive environment through a collaboration of community agencies.

Statistics have shown that one out of every four girls, and one out of every six boys, will be sexually abused before they reach age 18. Sadly, only one in 10 will ever disclose their abuse.

Unfortunately, these statistics do not discriminate against the children across the Northern Tier region of Pennsylvania. Child abuse in this area is an ever increasing problem that requires a community approach to address. These children deserve and need a safe place to transform from victim to survivor. That’s why our center exists.

The Children’s House/Child Advocacy Center (CHCAC) is a safe place for children and families to come when there are concerns about child abuse or neglect. We provide victim support, family advocacy, medical exams, mental health and forensic interviews through a comprehensive multidisciplinary approach. We minimize additional trauma to the child and family by bringing in a team of experts called the Multi-Disciplinary Investigative Team (MDIT) . Learn more about our services .

safe task force bradford

In 1986, a group of concerned citizens and professionals got together and created the Bradford County Child Sexual Abuse Task Force. The purpose of the original entity was to educate the public about child sexual abuse and to increase the prosecution of offenders.

In 1989, the Task Force received a grant from the Children’s Trust Fund to construct a facility to give sexually abused children in Bradford County a safe and child-friendly place to be interviewed by CYS and law enforcement personnel, and to minimize the number of times a child is required to recall their story of abuse.

Our vision has continued to grow since the inception of the Task Force. We continue to offer a child-friendly environment to children who have been victimized by abuse. In 2015, CACHC became an accredited member through the National Children’s Alliance .

We now provide a place for abused children and their families to receive the necessary services to recover and heal from their traumatic experience at no cost.
