Noun worksheets, lessons, and tests.

Understanding the parts of speech is fundamental to learning more advanced concepts like sentence structure , grammar, and punctuation. That's why so many language arts units start with the parts of speech. And, if you are starting a unit on the parts of speech, one of the better places to begin is by studying nouns .

Nouns are words that refer to people, places, and things. Most grade school students can tell you this. But the study of nouns gets a little more complex. There are many types of nouns such as common and proper, singular and plural, and abstract and concrete. It is helpful to know these distinctions when studying language. Over the years I've created a catalog of noun worksheets and activities that work well in the classroom. These include multiple-choice tests, practice activities suitable for homework or classroom activities, as well as online noun activities that give students instant feedback and save teachers' time. I've posted all of these activities to this page and made them freely accessible to teachers, parents, and students. May we all one day have a better understanding of what we are saying.

This exercise is not so good as I thought. It is full of mistakes and quality of the exercises are also not very good. Please recognise these mistakes and improve the exercises.

Hello. I’m sorry that your experience using these materials was negative. If you report the errors as you notice them, I will correct them. Best wishes.

Please report the mistakes as you encounter them and I will fix them. I’m just a single person and could use your expertise to improve this site and these resources.

I am so impressed with the way you answered this person’s comment. I really appreciate all of your hard work and although I as well do not always agree with some of the material, I find that when it comes to grammar there are many differences of opinion. Again I thank you for sharing all of your hard work. It is a very valuable resource.

A couple of the documents on this page need to be reformatted. They are skewed.

I love your website.

Thank you for saying this.

The problem with having editable .rtf files is that they appear differently depending on which device / program you are using to open them.

They are great if you want to make a change to a file, but other than that, I highly recommend using the .PDF files.

PDF files are formatted for print and will display in a uniform manner despite the device / program on which you open them.

So, I’m sorry that the .RTF files are not displaying properly for you on your current device. I encourage you to try the .PDF files.

Best wishes!

SO useful! Thanks!

This is so helpful!! My son has been struggling with parts of speech. This will really help us out!!

Thank you, thank you, thank you for this site!

Reinforces and reflects my current lessons. Interesting and self explanatory. Thank you so much! Worth your weight in gold! This helps on several grade levels.

Types of Nouns Worksheet

Before going to teach the different types of nouns to children, it is important that parents/teachers help them develop a clear understanding of nouns. In layman’s terms, nouns are names of persons, animals/birds, places or things. You can find several nouns worksheets at our BYJU’S website, which students can practise to strengthen their grip on the concept. Once they know about nouns, it will be easier for them to understand the different types of nouns.

Types of Nouns

There are five different categories into which nouns can be divided. Knowing the different types of nouns will help the students to easily identify them in the types of nouns worksheets . Let’s have a look at five different types of nouns.

  • Common Nouns – Common nouns refer to the generalised names of persons, animals/birds, places and things, which means there’s no particular name given. For example, “The child is playing with his toy”. Here, the toy and child are examples of common nouns.
  • Proper Nouns – Proper nouns refer to the particular names of persons, animals/birds, places and things. For example, “The National Museum is in Kolkata.” Here, the National Museum is the specific name of the museum, and Kolkata is the name of the city.
  • Collective Nouns – Collective nouns refer to those nouns where a group/number of persons, places, animals/birds or things are referred to as one. For example, “The herd of cattle was grazing in the field”. Here, the herd is the collective noun.
  • Concrete Nouns – Concrete Nouns are those types of nouns that refer to persons or things that have physical existence/structure and are perceived by all the five senses. For example, “The table is very high”. Here, the table is a concrete noun as it has a physical presence.
  • Abstract Nouns – Abstract nouns are those types of nouns that don’t have any definite structure or physical presence. They generally refer to emotions, ideas, feelings, concepts etc. For example, “The youth of the country plays an important role in the country’s growth”. Here, youth is an example of an abstract noun.

Apart from these five major categories, nouns can be generally divided into two categories, namely countable and uncountable nouns.

  • Countable Nouns – Countable nouns are those that are countable in nature; it includes nouns in their plural and singular forms. For example, “There are lots of children at the birthday party.” Here, ‘children’ is a countable noun.
  • Uncountable Nouns – Uncountable nouns mean nouns that are uncountable in nature but in some cases can be measured by their quantity. For example, “The sky is filled with stars.” Here, ‘stars’ is an uncountable noun.

Knowing these different types of nouns will help the kid to solve types of nouns worksheet pdf and strengthen their concepts. For more Kids Learning activities similar to Worksheets for Kids , visit BYJU’S website.

This is a nineteen slide PowerPoint that accompanies a YouTube video series which can be found here .

This PowerPoint looks at five different types of nouns (proper noun, concrete noun, pronoun, abstract noun and collective noun) and aims to help students identify the different types in a sentence. It contains some small activities too.

The YouTube video explores the slides in much more depth and is useful for students who are revising, home learning, or who have missed lessons and need to catch up.

Please note, this is not a lesson. It is a collection of slides that explain the noun types with some small activities. It’s more of a reference guide.

I have included the PowerPoint in PDF format, as well as PPTX.
