Improved experience

They have improved the experience since using their services years ago. From the beginning the service was slow and the responses didn't result into a good outcome. I decided to give them another shot and since then the customer service improved from responsiveness and friendliness. SCAMMERS!!!!!!!! Took my money, sent me a piece of work that was not even in line with the assignment and did not match the brief what I had sent them in anyway and then threatened me multiple times saying they were going to contact my uni to see if I have used the work (universities can’t share your work with anyone anyway) told me their ‘refund process’ takes 30-60 days and it’s no shock that we are now past that time frame and I have tried to contact them but been IGNORED. AssignmentExpert Overview 2023: Can You Trust This Service?

Review Plan

First Impression

The shortest version of my thoughts is that AssignmentExpert.com looks trustworthy but overwhelms users with a ton of information. I thought I’d struggle to create my login but I encountered different issues.

I first opened this website on my phone and it took me a while to see where I’m supposed to tap if I want to place an order. For some reason, the big orange button that says “submit now” didn’t instantly catch my attention. After scrolling down, I saw the text describing the benefits of the service, as well as some feedback from site users.

Then I decided to switch to my PC, and things instantly got a lot better. The desktop version is a bit overwhelming but it gave me all the information I could possibly need—from the number of assignments those guys completed to their fields of expertise. The only thing that wasn’t clear at first glance was whether I could order an essay instead of an assignment.

Other services have similar flaws, but I could easily compare AssignmentExpert.com with CustomWritings.com. On the second website, I didn’t get overwhelmed with information; the interface was much simpler, and it worked much better from mobile.

Overall, AssignmentExpert is not a winner in terms of site design and usability for me.

Service Review

This website mostly specializes in scientific subjects like physics, math, and programming. Importantly, AssignmentExpert also has a blog with various useful articles telling students how to study more effectively. Another educational category they offer is YouTube tutorials in their profile subjects. When I went to place an order, I saw that the options for the subject choice only include programming, math, engineering, economics and physics. Of course, I could always choose “other,” but it was clear at that point that AssignmentExpert is not an essay writing website.

In short, AssignmentExpert comprehensively covers a few scientific subjects, but I would look elsewhere if I needed an essay or an assignment in anything that’s not on their list.

How This Service Works

AssignmentExpert claims that all students need to do is submit their assignment, and then they just keep in touch and get the completed task. While this covers the basics, there are lots of inconveniences with this website. For example, I could only see the price once I’ve filled out the order form. There’s no calculator that would allow me to see how much I’d pay without going to the order form. This experience is a bit stressful, but the stress gets worse if you’re trying to order from your phone. The PC version of this site is a lot better, so I ended up switching to it for the rest of the process.

Overall, they completed and delivered the assignment I ordered in time, but I was much more stressed than I thought I would be.

Paper Quality

The site reviews range from positive to barely alright, and I’m one of the users who aren’t impressed. While the small physics task I submitted was done correctly, there were a few small mistakes I ended up fixing myself. I also ordered a one-page philosophy essay, and the structure was horrible. There was no introduction, and the paragraphs were huge, not at all what I was expecting. The paper also had a few typos and I also had to fix it myself. Overall, I think AssignmentExpert papers are overpriced, and I wouldn’t pay that much for them ever again.

Meet the Deadline

The customer reviews I’ve read rarely mention their tasks arriving late, and I got both the assignment and the paper I ordered on time. My only concern was that they arrived pretty close to the deadline, so I didn’t have time to ask the service for corrections. In short, AssignmentExpert delivers most orders within their deadlines.

Writers' Competence

After comparing my physics and philosophy tasks, I’ve come to the conclusion that most AssignmentExpert writers specialize in sciences and not in humanities. The physics task had a few small mistakes but they took me a few minutes to correct as I followed the lead of the correct solutions. However, I’ve spent a few hours trying to restructure the philosophy essay. I even thought that I might as well have written it from scratch. In conclusion, I don’t recommend the writers from this site to anyone who needs a high-quality paper.

One of the reviews on Sitejabber says, “I chose this site over three other sites. Every other site tried to charge me over $200. This site charged me $18 for my first project. No project after that have been over $45” (sic). Indeed, the price range is like this, and papers in humanities cost less than science assignments. However, I’ve paid around $15 for my philosophy essay and received a subpar paper. Overall, this service has middle-range prices, but its quality isn’t great either.

Service Comparison

Although AssignmentExpert is legit, it has many disadvantages when compared to Bid4Papers or CustomWritings. I’ve searched on Reddit and it turned out that many people share my perspective. Here are the chief reasons why.

Overall, I can get higher-quality papers even cheaper on different sites, so AssignmentExpert doesn’t compare well to most of them.

Who is The Service For?

According to my experience, this service is for the students who need assistance with their physics or programming tasks. The reviews on Sitejabber praise this site for great coding help and on-point deliveries, and I agree that they do better with such tasks. In short, use this website for your science projects but avoid it if you need a paper.

Is it Worth the Money?

In my opinion, this service is overpriced, especially when it comes to papers. It’s usable for assignments but I recommend you to find another website for your essays.

What Users Say

Although most reviews are positive, as I've mentioned above, a small portion of people on independent resources call AssignmentExpert scammers. Their chief concerns are orders arriving after the deadline and waiting for the assignment only to discover that the expert couldn’t do it. This means that AssignmentExpert might have communication issues. Customers give different ratings for this site, from 1/5 to 5/5. However, most scores are in the middle range, from 3 to 4 stars. Overall, the reviews are positive, but there haven’t been any new ones for the last year, which is a great disadvantage for me.

As I’ve mentioned before, the order form is friendly to sciences and not friendly for humanities. Another big disadvantage is that you can’t see the price till you order.

This service provides the help that people mostly praise. Although not all reviews look trustworthy, I can say from experience that their level is pretty average. You can find a better website for your essays, but it’s fine if you’re studying math or programming. I recommend that you check all orders you receive for small issues because that’s what most people, including me, had to deal with from this site.

I’ve found no information about choosing your writers on this website. AssignmentExpert has many competitors that actually allow you to select the writer, especially as a returning customer. However, this doesn’t seem to be the case here since no reviews mention it and there’s no information on the website that I could find.In short, you’ll probably need to go elsewhere if you want to choose your writer.

It’s pretty convenient to submit payments on this site. It supports the basic options like Visa, MasterCard, and Discover. I found nothing wrong with this side of the service.

Customer support

There’s a live chat on this website, although it might take the support operators a few minutes to answer you. I tried it and it’s pretty straightforward and accessible. Overall, customer support is easy to get with this site.

Discounts and features

I didn’t get any welcome discount like I would on most other websites, and I had no coupon available to me at the time I placed my orders. However, here’s a feature that is basically your expert explaining what they’re writing and why. I like that add-on, but I never saw a single promo code on that site. In short, I found no discounts available, but the explanation feature is nice, though it costs extra money.

I only found straightforward information about AssignmentExpert’s money-back guarantee that confirms the right for a refund. You can also request corrections if what writers created doesn’t match your expectations. These guarantees are important but basic, with no originality guarantee and no clear pledge not to disclose my private data.

Pros and Cons

Aside from this site being legal, there are other major advantages and disadvantages to it. Here they are.

Overall, I expected more from AssignmentExpert.com. The site design is crammed and almost impossible to use from the phone. It’s not great at completing papers, and the physics task I ordered could use some work given its price. The communication mishaps mentioned in customer reviews were also a stress factor for me since I wasn’t sure if I’d be notified right away if they couldn’t do my task. Although it has some advantages and I am giving this service 6/10 , I don’t think I’ll use this website ever again.

I order a assignment but when I received it that’s a totally different thing. I sent them all of material and assessment they didn’t read all of my stuff and answer the example one not the actual assignment and then they are blaming me that’s my fault. TERRIBLE SERVICE. EXTREMELY UNPROFESSIONAL

I gave them an assignment to complete, and gave them a deadline. I chased them up one hour AFTER it was due as I hadn't received anything, and they said to me 'the link you gave wasn't working so the expert was unable to do the work'. I would've happily resent the link had i known that it didn't work. Terrible excuse. Extremely unprofessional service telling me on such short notice. I had to complete the assignment myself only 2 days before handing it in as I was informed so late that they were unable to complete it. Would be 0 stars but they gave me a refund so that was the only positive part of my experience with them. I then gave the benefit of the doubt, and handed them another assignment to complete, however it's been a week and they haven't given me a price for it despite the '30 min waiting time'.

STAY AWAY! I sent these guys a physics assignment (of my own design). Then, I solved it myself before their deadline, and sent a follow-up problem. The answer I got to the first part was incorrect and very sloppy - had wrong geometric angles, incorrect statements about basic physics, and the 'proof' was an illegible JPG. The investigation at the heart of FRONTLINE’s new documentary A Dangerous Assignment: Uncovering Corruption in Maduro’s Venezuela unfolded as Venezuelan journalist Roberto Deniz started looking into complaints about the poor quality of food distributed by a government program.

Venezuela was in the throes of economic collapse in 2016. The value of the country’s oil had fallen, leading to a deficit, and Venezuelans faced high inflation and food shortages. President Nicolás Maduro responded by launching a food program called the Local Committees for Supply and Production (Comité Locales de Abastecimiento y Producción or CLAP).

As Deniz and the Venezuelan independent news site Armando.info where he worked looked into the program, they would help uncover a corruption scheme and the figure at the heart of the scandal: Alex Saab. The documentary, made in collaboration with Armando.info, was directed by Juan Ravell, produced by Jeff Arak and reported by Deniz — who is now living and working in exile.

Deniz and Ravell spoke with FRONTLINE about the risks of reporting on Venezuela, tracing a corruption scandal that reached into the Venezuelan government and spanned continents, and the price that journalists pay for investigating the powerful in Maduro’s government.

This interview has been edited for length and clarity. Some of the responses have been translated from Spanish.

Can you both take me back to how this whole investigation started?

Deniz: This has been a long story for us — “us” being Armando.info, but also for me, as a journalist. My investigation about Alex Saab started in 2016. That was the moment in which I decided to start investigating what was happening behind the CLAP program. But in 2015, the name Alex Saab came up in an investigation about a contract that he got to build buildings for poor people in Venezuela. The moment when I realized that Alex Saab was also behind the CLAP food program, it was a big signal: This is not a simple contractor of the Venezuelan government. He’s a man who is more powerful than we could imagine.

Ravell: I wasn’t there from the beginning, but I did start collaborating with Armando.info around 2019. They were doing short pieces with different styles in their investigation, so I was making shorts for them and little videos. I remember clearly when the Alacran [Scorpion] investigation broke. An investigation by Armando.info found that opposition lawmakers worked secretly to defend some of Alex Saab’s businesses abroad. And I remember listening to the phone call that Roberto had with Venezuelan opposition politician Luis Parra and I was thinking, “This is insane that nobody’s listening to this call and so few people are aware of the job that Roberto is doing.” The way that Roberto behaved — very controlled, pressing but fair — was impressive to me. That’s when I got the initial idea. Then, when Alex Saab was detained in Cape Verde, we were pretty much convinced that this needs to be a documentary.

Alex Saab’s business network was complicated and vast. Juan, how did you decide what aspects of the story to focus on while filming this documentary?

Ravell: Roberto’s investigation led the narrative. We wanted to follow the most important stories Roberto was publishing, and those that had the most impact. The milk investigation is pretty important to Venezuelans and finding out who was behind its import. A chemical analysis requested by Armando.info showed some of the powdered milk in the CLAP boxes was so deficient in calcium and high in sodium that a researcher noted it couldn’t be classified as milk.

We knew Alex Saab before that. There had been some reporting by Armando.info, but when they connect him to the CLAP importing scheme, that’s when this story gets going. So from then on, we’re basically following Roberto through his investigation and his stories. Other journalists were also working on this case like Gerardo Reyes from Univision and Joshua Goodman from The Associated Press.

Roberto, at what point did you realize the scale of Saab’s business network and its connection to so many Venezuelan government projects?

Deniz: Since 2016, when I realized that Alex Saab was behind the CLAP program. For me, it was very clear that Alex Saab was a man that we have to investigate. The idea that he was the man behind this program to provide food to poor people in Venezuela — that Nicolás Maduro gave all this power to these guys — was a very important signal. When I started, I realized that there was a lot of fear to talk about him. Some sources immediately told me, “Well, Roberto, you have to be careful, because this is a powerful man and is very close to Nicolás Maduro.”

Roberto, you say in the film that some of the information about Saab’s dealings was difficult to uncover, and you needed to find alternative sources. Can you share the process you used to vet these sources to make sure that the information that they were providing was legitimate?

Deniz: In a country like Venezuela, there are severe threats and intimidation against the journalists that dare to do this kind of work. Normally, a journalist can access information from public records, and you can access officials and expect some kind of response. But that doesn’t happen in Venezuela. They won’t even want to acknowledge that you have contacted them.

I spoke to many of the sources that I had gathered for many years, whom I thought could have useful information about what was happening with the CLAP program. That was how I started to gain access to information, documents, papers that confirmed and signaled that Alex Saab was behind all this. You have to double-check, check three or even four times, every piece of information.

I also had many off-the-record sources. I think that over time, those sources have seen the determination that I and the team at Armando.info have had regarding this investigation, and that’s the main reason why they have trusted in our rigor and perseverance.

What was the most challenging aspect of telling the story visually?

Ravell: I’d say finding the balance. It’s a lot of documents. It’s a lot of words. It’s a lot of very dry information that we need to present in an interesting way, so I think what we managed to do is just rely on the narrative and try to find the best ways to translate that into a compelling film.

We were present in certain key moments. When Roberto’s house in Venezuela was raided, we had a camera with Roberto and we were able to interview him that night. The day of the prisoner swap — when Saab was returned from Miami to Venezuela — was interesting, because we had a team in Bogotá following Roberto and a team in Miami. So two different teams in two separate cities covering the same thing. It was an interesting experiment. And I think it comes across nicely in the film.

Roberto, you shared how reporting this story has led to you living in exile. How has that affected your ability to tell stories about what’s going on in Venezuela? What kind of challenges do you face now doing the same kind of journalism you used to do from inside the country?

Deniz: Since I had to get out of Venezuela in 2018, the most difficult thing was answering, “How can I do my work now?” It was so difficult. All of my life, since I decided to become a journalist, I was living in Venezuela, working in Venezuela. But ultimately, my exile was a solution for me, because I could keep working.

The most difficult thing, I think, is the personal part, the family. I know that all of these investigations are not easy for my family, all their grief, all the personal costs that I decided to face during all of these years.

People told me, “Wow, Roberto, you are brave,” “You are a strong person.” I am totally convinced that it’s not related to that. It’s related to our duty as journalists, our responsibility as journalists in a country like Venezuela. People don’t have the opportunity to know what is really happening in the country. I think that has pushed me to continue on in this investigation.

Many times I have thought that this is the moment to end the investigation. I cannot continue anymore. But I have to continue on what we have tried to do in Armando.info.

Can you both speak about the government’s reaction to this journalism, and what it says about press freedoms in Venezuela? What impact is the current atmosphere having on reporters still working inside Venezuela?

Ravell: It’s pretty clear from NGOs that research freedom of expression that investigative journalism and free, independent journalism is at risk in Venezuela. If you publish something and you get sued for defamation, that could end up getting you criminal charges and that can put you in jail. What Armando.info decided to do is just go in and report on hard things, subjects like corruption, and report on people who are very connected to the highest reaches of the Venezuelan government. By doing that, the choice they had to make was to leave the country. One of the few ways you can report on Venezuela is by going into exile. Still, in exile, there are risks, as you can see in the film. Roberto’s house in Venezuela was raided right before Alex Saab was extradited. So he’s in exile, and he’s still persecuted.

Deniz: I have been in exile since 2018, and nowadays I don’t feel that I am safe living abroad. I think that shows how powerful the message of an autocratic government is when they decide to oppose the work of independent journalists. If you see all the stories related to the Alex Saab case, the first legal action that I faced was in 2017 when he decided to sue me. I could face jail if I stayed in Venezuela. I’m totally sure about that. But then in 2021, I got a new legal action against me. I think that is a clear message that even if you get out of Venezuela, but you continue with your work, you are going to face all of the power of the Venezuelan government. It’s so sad for us as journalists.

Shortly before the premiere of this film, the Venezuelan government began responding to the documentary. Can you give us your take on their response?

Deniz: The attorney general of Venezuela accused us — Ewald Scharfenberg, editor and founder of Armando.info, and me, as a reporter — of supposedly being part of and benefiting from a “corruption scheme” related to Venezuela’s ex-oil minister, Tarek El Aissami, who was incarcerated some weeks ago and who’s been questioned for more than a year within a corruption investigation in PDVSA, the Venezuelan state-owned oil company.

It’s not a coincidence that this is happening right after we released the documentary’s trailer. For me, it’s more than evident that this accusation is total nonsense, but that doesn’t make it less serious, because this is a criminalization of the journalism that we have been doing in Armando.info. Sometimes I think that if you compare the work of Armando.info with all the power of the Venezuelan government, we’re like a dwarf fighting a giant, a tiny particle against a huge government, but that only shows you the authoritarian nature of this regime. They won’t tolerate, they won’t accept that some people persist and keep investigating.

New inflation data could signal cheaper grocery prices, more discounts, expert says

As Americans continue to experience sticker shock with volatile food costs, a slight ease of inflation last month could provide relief for consumers' wallets -- particularly at the grocery store.

Food prices rose at a much slower pace than overall inflation since the same time last month, the Department of Labor shared Wednesday in the latest consumer price index findings.

The food at home index -- food purchased at grocery stores -- declined by 0.2%, while the food away from home index -- everything from takeout to dining at restaurants -- rose 0.3% over the month, according to the Department of Labor.

Dr. Michael Swanson, Wells Fargo's Chief Agriculture Economist, told ABC News that this is the first time in a while that consumers have spent more money on dining than on groceries.

"It surprises people because it's kind of a new development in the last couple of years where we finally saw the dollars exceed spending away from home," he said. "When you buy food away from home, 70% of that is overhead and labor, so you're really only buying 30% of the food with the dollar that you spend."

Compared to the same time last year, there has been a 3% increase in the gap between the two categories, which Swanson said indicates will "really push people to prepare more meals at home and take it with them, because it's such a big premium right now to be eating away from home with this inflation rate differential."

Some staple food at home products fell in April compared to a year ago, including bread, poultry and eggs, the CPI data showed.

Prices for other items like breakfast sausage and ice cream, however, increased at a pace near the level of overall inflation.

"Even when we talk about food at home, there's a huge range between highly prepared and more basic ingredients," Swanson said. "You can save a lot of money even at the supermarket buying some food that's less prepared."

Looking at the CPI numbers, Swanson said, "is really important" because it offers "a much bigger survey" thanks to the thousands of government price trackers who gather the new data, rather than if shoppers go with their "gut instinct about what's in their market basket."

What he has observed ahead of the summer months is retailers getting more customers in the door with deals.

"We're hearing from customers that manufactured food is gonna be more of an emphasis on what we used to see a lot," such as "coupons or buy one get one or promotions." He added that "consumers should get their game on -- beccause if you shop around you're going to find some pretty good promotions. But if you don't, you'll miss them."

Aldi, for example, recently announced discounts on hundreds of popular seasonal best-sellers from steaks to road trip snacks.

"I do expect it to continue because from what we've seen, all these companies are really battling for market share -- so we're gonna see more of this competition for market share, and this usually reflects either quality or price and hopefully both," Swanson said.

PGA Championship DFS picks 2024: Why Brooks Koepka is an easy bet at Valhalla

I t’s hard to believe that we have already reached the year’s second major, but PGA Championship week is upon us. The Wanamaker Trophy returns to Valhalla Golf Club this week in Louisville for the venue’s fourth major championship. We last saw the Jack Nicklaus design at Rory McIlroy’s most recent major championship victory in 2014, when he triumphed at 16-under par over Phil Mickelson and Rickie Fowler on a rain-soaked golf course. Though some changes have been made to Valhalla since 2014, including five new tee boxes and a fairway surface change to Zoysiagrass, we should expect similarly wet conditions this week in Louisville. The PGA of America has certainly made an active effort in recent years to protect par, as single digits under-par winners have characterized four of the last PGA Championships.

PGA Championship 2024 power rankings: Our deep dive into every player in the field competing at Valhalla

Storylines are aplenty this week as McIlroy returns to the site of former glory on the 10-year anniversary of his last major championship victory. McIlroy is undeniably in his best form of the season, coming off back-to-back victories at the Zurich Classic and Wells Fargo Championship. Will this finally be the week that McIlroy breaks his major drought?

Scottie Scheffler might have something to say about that, who is chasing history in his own right and looking to become just the 21st player to win multiple majors in the same season. We would be remiss not to mention Brooks Koepka, who also has the opportunity to cement his place in golf history this week with his sixth major. We have yet to mention the likes of Ludvig Aberg, Jon Rahm, Xander Schauffele, Patrick Cantlay, Bryson DeChambeau and Collin Morikawa, who all set up tremendously well for Valhalla and are sure to provide a legitimate challenge in their own right. Here are my favorite plays and fades for DFS contests this week at the PGA Championship.

There are very few certainties in golf, but Brooks Koepka at PGA Championship and U.S. Open setups remains one of the safest bets in golf. In 21 U.S. Open and PGA Championships, Koepka has recorded 11 top-five finishes and five wins. He is contending at over a 50-percent clip in these events and winning nearly one in every four chances. I would expect the five-time major winner to proceed with business as usual at Valhalla, which bears in mind a striking resemblance to Oak Hill, Bethpage Black and Bellerive, all sites of former PGA victories for Koepka. Coming off a win at LIV Singapore, Koepka is one of the few players in this field that I trust to go toe-to-toe with Scheffler and come out on top.

I remain incredibly bullish on Ludvig Aberg’s talent, but the lingering knee injury that caused him to withdraw from the Wells Fargo Championship last week raises a major red flag. Aberg is still competing in only his second career major, and while the early returns at the Masters were as strong as anyone could have hoped for, the combination of the injury and lack of experience are still enough for me to settle for more proven commodities in this price range.

A much bigger storyline at the Masters, Joaquin Niemann feels a little more under the radar the radar this week. This surprises me, as Niemann is coming off a seventh-place finish at LIV Singapore where he led the field in approach play, and the young Chilean has been the most consistent performer on LIV all season with six top-10s and two wins. Mix in a fourth in Dubai, a third in Oman, and a 22nd at the Masters, and Niemann is playing some of the best golf in the world right now. His combination of total driving, long iron play, and bentgrass putting should provide a perfect match for the task at hand at Valhalla this week.

While Cameron Smith is always a threat to lead the field in strokes gained/around the green play and putting, I’m worried that he will be behind the eight ball this week off the tee. Smith has not put together one solid driving performance on the LIV Tour this season, and he ranks below average in both distance and accuracy. Many of his best major championship performances have come on wide open golf courses such as Augusta National, Los Angeles Country Club and St. Andrews—with negligible rough. Smith’s lack of power and inability to find the fairway with any consistency creates a difficult pathway to success at longer golf courses with thick rough such as Valhalla.

There are only two players in this field that have finished inside the top 20 at the 2018 PGA Championship at Bellerive and the 2023 PGA Championship at Oak Hill: Brooks Koepka and … Tyrrell Hatton. Both prior PGA venues have a lot in common with Valhalla, and Hatton has sneakily one of the strongest resumes in this field on longer, challenging golf courses with thick rough. Coming off a fifth at LIV Singapore, where he gained 6.8 strokes on approach, the Englishman has been one of the best approach players on LIV this season as well, and a top-15 finish at the Masters leaves me feeling even more encouraged that his form is translatable to another big-time event.

One of the more subdued storylines this week is Jordan Spieth’s attempt at the career Grand Slam. Expectations have been quelled for a reason, as Spieth is simply not playing at a high level right now. The main reason for concern is his recent iron play, as the three-time major winner has now lost strokes on approach in seven of his past eight starts. It appears to be getting worse before it gets better as well, as Spieth lost 5.1 strokes on approach last week at the Wells Fargo Championship, his worst mark of the season. On a golf course with smaller greens and such a high plurality of long irons, Spieth’s approach play is simply not sharp enough for me to pay this price tag.

Min Woo Lee always has my attention on long and difficult courses due to his elite driving ability. It is not a coincidence that Lee quietly finished top 20 at both the PGA Championship and U.S. Open last year, and I expect him to continue his strong play on these types of setups in the future. Coming off a performance at the CJ Cup where he gained 5.6 strokes off the tee, Lee’s driving ability is one of the most bankable skill-sets in this field, and one that will play major dividends at a course like Valhalla.

Something has looked off with Tom Kim all season, and the three-time PGA Tour winner has now lost strokes in both ball-striking categories in back-to-back starts. Kim has failed to finish top 10 on the PGA Tour all season largely due to inconsistent play off the tee. Valhalla is not the type of golf course that will be kind to poor drivers of the ball, and this aspect of his game is too much of a liability for me to trust the 21-year-old.

While far from a household name playing on the LIV Tour, Dean Burmester is one to watch this week at Valhalla. The South African has recorded six top-15 finishes in seven starts on LIV this season, including a win at Doral, a long golf course that emphasizes total driving and long iron approach play. That skill-set should translate to Valhalla, and at $7,000, there are few players in this price range that possess such ball-striking upside.

Keith Mitchell has always been one of the best drivers of the ball on the PGA Tour, but he has also developed into one of the best long iron players, too. Mitchell ranks top 20 in this field in driving distance, recent off-the-tee play, recent approach play, and proximity from 200-plus yards. There are few players in the $6,000 range that possess the ball-striking chops of Mitchell, and I’m expecting a breakout performance from the 32-year-old.

China Is Buying Gold Like There’s No Tomorrow

The global price of gold has reached its highest levels as Chinese investors and consumers, wary of real estate and stocks, buy the metal at a record pace.

As gold surged this year to its highest price ever, Xena Lin joined the frenzy by making monthly purchases of gold “beans,” pebble-like morsels of the precious metal.

For Ms. Lin, a 25-year-old administrative worker in southern China, the $80 beans — small enough to rest on a fingertip and weighing about one-thirtieth of an ounce — were an affordable way to buy into the gold excitement without splurging for jewelry, gold bars or coins. She had dabbled with investing in stocks in the past, but she said buying gold, especially in this fun way, inspired her to continue investing.

“I’m still working hard to save more,” Ms. Lin said.

Often considered a safe investment during times of geopolitical and economic turmoil, gold has soared in price in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the war in Gaza. But gold’s climb to highs above $2,400 per ounce has proved more resilient, and lasted longer, because of China.

Chinese consumers have flocked to gold as their confidence in traditional investments like real estate or stocks has faltered. At the same time, the country’s central bank has steadily added to its gold reserves, while whittling away at its holdings of U.S. debt. And throwing fuel on the fire are Chinese speculators betting that there is still room for appreciation.

China already held considerable sway in gold markets. But the country’s influence has become more pronounced during this latest bull run — a nearly 50 percent increase in the global price since late 2022. It continued to scale new heights despite factors that traditionally make gold a comparatively less appealing investment: higher interest rates and a strong U.S. dollar.

Last month, gold prices vaulted higher even after the Federal Reserve signaled that it would keep higher interest rates for longer . And it has continued to appreciate even as the dollar has risen against almost every major currency in the world this year.

Prices have pulled back to around $2,300 per ounce, but there is a growing sentiment that the gold market is governed no longer by economic factors but by the whims of Chinese buyers and investors.

“China is unquestionably driving the price of gold,” said Ross Norman, chief executive of MetalsDaily.com , a precious-metals information platform based in London. “The flow of gold to China has gone from solid to an absolute torrent.”

Gold consumption in the country rose 6 percent in the first quarter from a year earlier, according to the China Gold Association. It came on the heels of a 9 percent increase last year.

Gold investing became more alluring as traditional investments turned lackluster. China’s real estate sector, the destination for most families’ savings, remains in crisis. Investor confidence in the country’s stock markets has not fully returned. A string of big investment funds aimed at the wealthy toppled after failed bets on real estate.

With few better alternatives, money flowed into Chinese funds that traded in gold, and many young people took to collecting beans in tiny quantities.

Online merchants are aggressively hawking gold beans. On Alibaba’s Taobao, one of China’s biggest e-commerce platforms, a merchant sold gold beans on a livestream — a blend of the Home Shopping Network and Amazon. She said buying beans was “like shopping, but an investment.”

The tiny beans came in five shapes, including one that resembled a peanut and another like a persimmon. Paying $87 per bean, a person could buy into the gold boom for the price of a hot pot meal, she said.

Kelly Zhong, a teacher in Beijing, started buying gold in 2020 at the outset of the pandemic. She has amassed more than two pounds of gold bars, but she has also invested in the metal through exchange-traded funds. She said she was inspired by an old saying: “Jade in prosperous times, gold in troubled times.”

As she felt the world become more chaotic, Ms. Zhong added to her stockpile, betting that gold prices would only climb. She has stopped buying, but she is not ready to sell. She sees no reason to. The Chinese economy is still struggling, and neither real estate nor stocks seem like a sound investment.

“The money has to go somewhere,” she said.

Another major buyer of gold in China is the country’s central bank. In March, the People’s Bank of China added to its gold reserves for a 17th straight month. Last year, the bank bought more gold than any other central bank in the world, adding more to its reserves than it had in nearly 50 years.

Beijing is buying up gold to diversify its reserve funds and reduce its dependence on the U.S. dollar, long considered the most important currency to hold in reserve. China has been reducing its U.S. Treasury holdings for more than a decade. As of March, China had about $775 billion worth of U.S. debt, down from about $1.1 trillion in 2021.

When China increased its gold holdings in the past, it bought domestically using renminbi, said Guan Tao, global chief economist at BOC International in Beijing. But this time, he said, the bank is using foreign currencies to buy gold — effectively reducing its exposure to the U.S. dollar and other currencies.

Many central banks, including China, starting acquiring gold after the U.S. Treasury Department took the rare step of freezing Russia’s dollar holdings under sanctions imposed on Moscow. Other American allies imposed similar restrictions for their currencies.

Mr. Guan said the sanctions had shaken the “foundation of trust for the current international monetary system” and forced central banks to protect their reserves with more diverse holdings. “We can see this wave of gold’s rise may be different from the past,” he said.

Although Beijing has been buying up gold, the metal accounts for only about 4.6 percent of China’s foreign exchange reserves. In percentage terms, India holds nearly twice as much of its reserves in gold.

The combination of aggressive retail buying from Chinese consumers and central bank purchases has drawn the interest of speculators on markets in Shanghai who are betting that this trend will continue. Average trading volume for gold on the Shanghai Futures Exchange more than doubled in April from a year earlier.

“They are swimming with the tide,” said Mr. Norman from MetalsDaily. “China is now dominating the gold market.”

For Ms. Lin, buying gold beans is satisfying, she said, because it feels like frivolous shopping but she’s actually investing her money in something she can touch. She said she would continue to buy more beans.

“The price of gold always goes up and down,” she said. “But the increase is within the range that I can bear, so I think it’s OK.”

People are raiding their savings and racking up debt, paving the way for economic pain, expert warns

Steep rises in prices and monthly interest payments have left people on the brink of financial disaster, setting the stage for the economy to crater, says Stephanie Pomboy.

"The consumer is spent up and lent up," the Macro Mavens founder said on the latest episode of the "Thoughtful Money" podcast.

"They're spending every dollar they have, and then some, just to keep up with the basic necessities."

Pomboy noted that first-quarter economic growth was fueled by spending on housing, healthcare, and insurance.

"This is not consumers running out and taking vacations and buying second homes and a new car or anything like that, quite the contrary," she said.

The economist underscored that households are drawing down their savings and running up their credit cards just to cover everyday expenses, and cutting back on non-essential purchases.

Inflation spiked to a 40-year high of more than 9% in 2022, and has been tracking close to 4% in recent months — well above the Federal Reserve's 2% target.

The US central bank has responded by hiking interest rates from nearly zero to north of 5%, which has raised the monthly amount that people owe on their mortgages, credit cards, car loans, and other debts.

The one-two punch of surging prices and soaring borrowing costs has put the squeeze on households, forcing them to raid their piggy banks, rack up additional debt, save less each month, and slash their outgoings.

Pomboy pointed to the National Restaurant Association's monthly performance index , which had a "shockingly weak" reading in January as consumers dined out less, and remained depressed in March.

She also emphasized that retail sales have barely budged in two years once adjusted for inflation. Moreover, she highlighted recent cautions from Starbucks and McDonald's about waning consumer demand.

Pomboy worked for more than a decade at ISI — a trading group acquired by Evercore in 2014 — before launching her own investment-research firm in 2002.

She underscored that consumer spending is the engine of the economy, and company profits tend to suffer when it falters.

As a result, Pomboy predicted a "real slowdown in economic activity" with "problems around servicing debt among consumers and corporations."

She flagged disappointing data for consumer confidence, wage growth, and employment gains in recent months as warning signs.

Pomboy also underlined the risks to underfunded pensions of a broader downturn, and mounting pressure on banks as deposits are yanked and loan delinquencies rise among consumers and commercial real estate businesses.

"We've got a lot of painful time ahead of us," she said. "God forbid there's a reversion to the mean in the stock market or credit — that's gonna be ugly."

Pomboy is personally betting on hard assets with gold as her biggest holding, followed by real estate and some cash. She "wouldn't touch corporate credit with a 10-foot pole," and advised being "very defensive" on stocks as higher interest rates and cooling economic growth threaten to weigh on them.

The expert researcher has been sounding the alarm on consumers running out of cash for over a year , echoing other gurus including Michael Burry of "The Big Short" fame.

Yet the economy has skirted recession , the stock market has surged to record highs instead of crashing, unemployment remains historically low, and corporate profits have mostly held up, meaning Pomboy's warnings have been off the mark so far.
