Oh, those loveable 6th graders! What would middle school be like with out them? Here are all of my reading worksheets that were written at the 6th grade level. I used this fantastic site to determine the readability scores of these worksheets, but you should read and approve them yourself before giving them to your students. Readability scores are not perfect and there are many different algorithms to determine readability scores. I use an average of these scores, but they can vary wildly. For these reasons, I encourage you to open up the reading levels two grade levels in each direction. This will give you a good selection of texts that are appropriate for a 6th grade student to read.

The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) for English Language Arts (ELA) provide a framework of educational expectations for students in reading, writing, and other language skills. Teaching Sixth Grade

So often, our children reach sixth grade without the basics.

Or they've forgotten everything they've ever learned. Somehow.

Many sixth graders are not familiar enough with their early  math  facts because they never had the time and the help necessary to memorize them, or because they've been using calculators and are a bit rusty.

Sixth Grade Math Word Problems

So many times math is not the problem for those who struggle with math word problems.

Sometimes it's a grammar difficulty where the logic of the sentences does not make sense. See if diagramming the sentences helps them see the actual question being asked.

2. 6th Grade Reading

Phonics basics.

I frequently see sixth graders who cannot read well.

Will The Real Sixth Grade Reading Level Please Stand?

By the time your students are at the sixth Grade Reading level they're usually not simply learning to read. They are able to read to learn. Kids learn all the time, yet now they're learning and learning how to learn from their reading.

Supposedly.

Usually there's not much teaching left to do in 6th Grade Reading, at least as far as the mechanics of reading go.

Really, if kids will write more they'll learn to read better so be sure to take a look at  Karen Newell's creative writing ideas in her Write On book . Both are available as downloads.

Teaching Grammar

Hang In There, Reading Gets Easier

For some students, all they have to do is to keep on "keepin' on".

The more writing and reading that your students do in other classes, the more chance they'll have of improving their comprehension. This is good to know when things look overwhelming. A child may struggle today, and may thrive later - even real soon if they're working at it.

Be encouraged.

Only rarely is it true that a whole sixth Grade class is at the same experience and maturity level, so their comprehension of ideas is affected here as well.

You already know that the best reading activity is to read.

Writing Helps Reading Skills

By sixth grade most students have had a hand at writing their own essays and book reports so they appreciate reading from a different perspective.

Generally, they have an idea of the work involved in creating a story and are a bit more interested in the stories of others. This is when good histories and biographies become interesting.

If your students are interested in the books they are reading, they'll read them better.

Either edify the books you require or suggest light titles that are of interesting topics. Be excited so that your students will be excited.

Many students really appreciate suggestions of books to choose because it can be hard to stand amongst the shelves wondering which book to is a good choice. Not to mention the siren call of electronics.

You'll find that your students will work harder through books in which they have an interest, even if the reading level is a bit high. Once they've read several tougher books they'll have an easier time reading the day to day material. One hard book covers most of the skills needed for a lifetime.

Remember the value of writing. Old timers like in Laura Ingalls Wilder's stories wrote from a book to a slate as the main way to practice their work. They did not have reams of loose leaf paper to spend on writing.

Writing? It's a great way to learn. Teachers and college students take notes from their reading all day long. Writing does aid both reading and memory work.

How to teach reading.

We're not usually teaching reading to sixth graders as most usually have this skill. I say this often this site, yet I'd be remiss not to mention it here; I really learned "how to teach reading" as an art after using the  Writing Road To Reading  by Romalda Spalding.

Reading came fairly easily to me. It did not come easily for some of my children, and that was heart breaking for all of us.

In our family  Grandpa  came to the rescue in this case. He decided to take the Spalding courses in Phoenix, Arizona and came home ready to teach the basics to all of his grandchildren.

Within two months Grandpa had had such good results with our children and local nieces and nephews that others were asking to join us at our homes.

Soon he opened his own home for the purpose of teaching phonics and in the course of the next few years before his final illness he had helped over 60 other families for free.

He's the reason we keep our PrintNPractice resources free.

We were all astonished at how basic phonics lessons really improved the reading skills of our older children , too.

At first they felt awkward learning the sounds and the rules; but by the time the next quarter came they could already see an improvement in their reading. They were unanimously grateful to have had to study phonics even at a late time.

One child conveyed to me her joy that not only did her spelling grade improve, but it was so much easier to study her history and science classes. Even Math was a bit easier simply because her reading was easier.

The  Writing Road To Reading  also has a great sixth grade reading list so you have an idea of some classic books that have interested children for years. I heartily recommend this book.

3. Printable Sixth Grade Worksheets for Spelling

Printable 6th grade spelling words & worksheets.

Half the battle with children learning their sixth grade spelling words is making sure that they copy the words correctly the first time.

Our spelling list for sixth grade has much longer words than the words in our lower levels. They frequently use several variations on a base word for easier Vocabulary work.

Your students will see the Spelling rules in action in the different spellings of derived words and be able to make connections when learning other new words.

Seeing the different versions of words with their different prefixes and suffixes also teaches Vocabulary skills. These same Vocabulary skills transfer to other words, too.

Sixth Grade Spelling Ideas

Create spelling lists from reading books.

This is a super efficient way to improve spelling for anyone.

One hundred years ago most readers used this method and they even marked the phonics sounds .

Use your students' reading books to find new words or complicated words and then create your own Spelling list for those words.

Do it ahead of time so that the reading is easier and makes better sense. Once your students have then read the material, they'll have a better understanding of the meaning of the words used.

You can use this idea in History and Science classes, too, even Math classes since reading is half the trouble with word problems. We have ruled spelling sheets on our  Lined Writing Paper  page that you can use to make your unique spelling lists for copywork.

Personal Spelling List

This is an ancient idea and you can do it two ways.

• Write words your children have trouble reading.
• Have them write those words.

Assign those words to practice three times each till they are no longer hard to spell.

Do you know what?

Knowing that there's more work later for not knowing their words often motivates kids to get it right the first time. :-)

Speller Notebook

I know several children who simply kept a separate notebook to study the words that they had missed.

Others simply kept a list at the back of the notebook they were using for class. This keeps the words close and handy through the year.

4. 6th Grade Grammar And Writing

Sixth Grade is a time when students should be able to construct sentences on their own, capitalize and punctuate, and even diagram simple sentences.

By 6th Grade writing class, most children are able to write from memory, but it is grammar that is the bugaboo. Check out our grammar pages for diagrams, capitalization, and punctuation.

Understanding the use of words can be a trick. How do words describe other words? Seeing the use of words on a diagram can be most helpful. Our diagramming worksheets show the parts of speech in their correct places.

The next trick is finding creative writing ideas that appeal to 6th graders.

Brief history of different grading systems

In 1785, students at Yale were ranked based on "optimi" being the highest rank, followed by second optimi, inferiore (lower), and pejores (worse). At William and Mary, students were ranked as either No. 1, or No. 2, where No. 1 represented students that were first in their class, while No. 2 represented those who were "orderly, correct and attentive." Meanwhile at Harvard, students were graded based on a numerical system from 1-200 (except for math and philosophy where 1-100 was used). Later, shortly after 1883, Harvard used a system of "Classes" where students were either Class I, II, III, IV, or V, with V representing a failing grade. All of these examples show the subjective, arbitrary, and inconsistent nature with which different institutions graded their students, demonstrating the need for a more standardized, albeit equally arbitrary grading system.

In 1887, Mount Holyoke College became the first college to use letter grades similar to those commonly used today. The college used a grading scale with the letters A, B, C, D, and E, where E represented a failing grade. This grading system however, was far stricter than those commonly used today, with a failing grade being defined as anything below 75%. The college later re-defined their grading system, adding the letter F for a failing grade (still below 75%). This system of using a letter grading scale became increasingly popular within colleges and high schools, eventually leading to the letter grading systems typically used today. However, there is still significant variation regarding what may constitute an A, or whether a system uses plusses or minuses (i.e. A+ or B-), among other differences.

An alternative to the letter grading system

Letter grades provide an easy means to generalize a student's performance. They can be more effective than qualitative evaluations in situations where "right" or "wrong" answers can be easily quantified, such as an algebra exam, but alone may not provide a student with enough feedback in regards to an assessment like a written paper (which is much more subjective).

Although a written analysis of each individual student's work may be a more effective form of feedback, there exists the argument that students and parents are unlikely to read the feedback, and that teachers do not have the time to write such an analysis. There is precedence for this type of evaluation system however, in Saint Ann's School in New York City, an arts-oriented private school that does not have a letter grading system. Instead, teachers write anecdotal reports for each student. This method of evaluation focuses on promoting learning and improvement, rather than the pursuit of a certain letter grade in a course. For better or for worse however, these types of programs constitute a minority in the United States, and though the experience may be better for the student, most institutions still use a fairly standard letter grading system that students will have to adjust to. The time investment that this type of evaluation method requires of teachers/professors is likely not viable on university campuses with hundreds of students per course. As such, although there are other high schools such as Sanborn High School that approach grading in a more qualitative way, it remains to be seen whether such grading methods can be scalable. Until then, more generalized forms of grading like the letter grading system are unlikely to be entirely replaced. However, many educators already try to create an environment that limits the role that grades play in motivating students. One could argue that a combination of these two systems would likely be the most realistic, and effective way to provide a more standardized evaluation of students, while promoting learning.

To calculate the percentile test score, all you need to do is divide the earned points by the total points possible . In other words, you're simply finding the percentage of good answers:

percentage score = (#correct / #total) × 100

As #correct + #wrong = #total , we can write the equation also as:

percentage score = 100 × (#total - #wrong) / #total

Then, all you need to do is convert the percentage score into a letter grade . The default grading scale looks as in the table below:

If you don't like using the +/- grades, the scale may look like:

• An A is 90% to 100%;
• A B is 80% to 89%;
• A C is 70% to 79%;
• A D is 60% to 69%; and finally
• F is 59% and below – and it's not a passing grade

Above, you can find the standard grading system for US schools and universities. However, the grading may vary among schools, classes, and teachers. Always check beforehand which system is used in your case.

Enter the number of questions/points/problems in the student's work (test, quiz, exam – anything). Assume you've prepared the test with 18 questions.

Type in the number the student got wrong . Instead – if you prefer – you can enter the number of gained points. Let's say our exemplary student failed to answer three questions.

That was a basic version of the test grade calculator. But our teacher grader is a much more versatile and flexible tool!

You can choose more options to customize this test score calculator. Just hit the Advanced mode button below the tool, and two more options will appear:

Increment by box – Here, you can change the look of the table you get as a result. The default value is 1, meaning the student can get an integer number of points. But sometimes it's possible to get, e.g., half-points – then you can use this box to declare the increment between the next scores.

Percentage scale – In this set of boxes, you can change the grading scale from the default one. For example, assume that the test was challenging and you'd like to change the scale so that getting 50% is already a passing grade (usually, it's 60% or even 65%). Change the last box, Grade D- ≥ value, from default 60% to 50% to reach the goal. You can also change the other ranges if you want to.

And what if I don't need +/- grades ? Well, then just ignore the signs 😄

How do I calculate my test grade?

To calculate your test grade:

• Determine the total number of points available on the test.
• Add up the number of points you earned on the test.
• Divide the number of points you earned by the total number of points available.
• Multiply the result by 100 to get a percentage score.

Is 27 out of 40 a passing grade?

This depends mainly on the grading scale that your teacher is using. If a passing score is defined as 60% (or a D-), then 27 out of 40 would correspond to a 67.5% (or a D+), which would be a passing grade. However, depending on your teacher’s scale, the passing score could be higher or lower.

What grade is 7 wrong out of 40?

This is a B-, or 82.5% . To get this result:

Use the following percentage score formula: percentage score = 100 × (#total - #wrong) / #total

Here, #total represents the total possible points, and #wrong , the number of incorrect answers.

Substitute your values: percentage score = 100 × (40 - 7) / 40 percentage score = 82.5%

Convert this percentage into a letter grade. In the default grading scale, 82.5% corresponds to a B-. However, grading varies — make sure to clarify with teachers beforehand.

Is 75 out of 80 an A?

Yes , a score of 75 out of 80 is an A according to the default grading scale. This corresponds to a percentage score of 93.75%.

Deadline Extended: NPR Student Podcast Challenge entries are now due May 31

Teachers, students, podcasters: some good news! Since we closed our sixth annual contest (and our first-ever fourth grade competition) last week, we've been hearing from many teachers and educators asking us for more time – to wrap up class assignments, get more students to enter, and for just a little bit more time to make those podcasts sparkle!

And so, we've listened: We're extending the contest deadline through the end of this month. Student podcasts are now due Friday, May 31 at midnight E.T .

As a reminder, here's how the NPR Student Podcast Challenge works: Students make a podcast on their own, with classmates or an extracurricular group. Then their teacher, educator, or any adult who is 18 years or older, can submit it to us here . This contest is for students between 4th and 12th grade, and each podcast must be between three and eight minutes long. The winning student will receive a certificate, trophy and their podcast will be featured on NPR programs like Morning Edition or All Things Considered . You can find our contest rules here .

An Adolf Hitler-themed question-and-answer assignment given to students at a private school in Atlanta has sparked outrage among parents over its suspected antisemitic nature.

Eighth-grade students at the Mount Vernon School in Atlanta were given a series of questions asking them to rate some of the characteristics of Adolf Hitler — the dictator of Nazi Germany from 1933 to 1945, whose antisemitic ideology fueled the Holocaust — as a leader, according to Fox 5 Atlanta . 

One question posed to students asked, “According to the Mount Vernon Mindset rubric, how would you rate Adolf Hitler as a ‘solution seeker’?” 

A second question asked how students would “rate Adolf Hitler as an ethical decision-maker?”

For both questions, the students were given the option of selecting “Lacks Evidence,” “Approaching Expectations,” “Meets Expectations” or “Exceeds Expectations” to describe the ruthless dictator. 

The bizarre questions ignited outrage among parents — many of whom were concerned the queries were antisemitic by nature, according to the outlet. 

Students at the private school also had issues with the questions, with one telling the outlet the assignment was “troubling” and could be seen as glorifying the warmongering totalitarian leader. 

“Obviously, that looks horrible in the current context,” another student told the outlet. “Knowing Mount Vernon, we do things a little odd around here.”

The student added that the school is known to “try to think outside the box” but shared that “oftentimes that doesn’t work.”

Several former students told Fox 5 that those questions weren’t given to them during eighth grade.

While many parents and students were shaken over the assignment, one student believes the school attempted to pose a historically provocative question that required students to use their critical thinking skills. 

“I can definitely see why they’d be upset, but overall, I think it’s important to look at both sides of the coin in every situation, and I think it’s important to be able to compare and contrast everything that’s happened in our world history, whether it’s been good or bad,” said the student.

Upon learning the phrasing of the questions in the assignment, Mount Vernon officials said they had removed it from the school’s curriculum. 

The principal of Mount Vernon, Kristy Lundstrom, wrote in a statement that the assignment was “an exploration of World War II designed to boost student knowledge of factual events and understand the manipulation of fear leveraged by Adolf Hitler in connection to the Treaty of Versailles.” 

“Immediately following this incident, I met with the School’s Chief of Inclusion, Diversity, Equality, and Action, Head of Middle School, and a concerned Rabbi and friend of the School who shared the perspective of some of our families and supported us in a thorough review of the assignment and community impact.”

“Adolf Hitler and the events of the time period are difficult and traumatic to discuss.”

The private school, about 16 miles outside downtown Atlanta, is a “co-educational day school for more than 1200 students in Preschool through Grade 12,” according to the institution’s  website . 

“We are a school of inquiry, innovation, and impact. Grounded in Christian values, we prepare all students to be college ready, globally competitive, and engaged citizen leaders,” its mission statement reads.

Pirates designate LHP Josh Fleming for assignment one night after a poor relief performance

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Left-handed pitcher Josh Fleming was designated for assignment by the Pittsburgh Pirates on Tuesday, one day after he allowed six runs while getting just three outs in a relief appearance.

The Pirates recalled right-hander Ryder Ryan from Triple-A Indianapolis to fill Fleming’s spot.

“We needed a bullpen arm,” Pirates manager Derek Shelton said Tuesday before a game with the Milwaukee Brewers. “We have other guys that are available tonight and we need the innings. Josh became the odd man out.”

Fleming, who turns 28 on Saturday, had a 1-1 record and a 5.68 ERA with one save in 17 appearances with the Pirates this season. He had pitched for the Tampa Bay Rays from 2020-23.

After heading into April 30 with a 1.29 ERA, Fleming had given up 11 runs – 10 earned – over five innings in his last five appearances.

In the Pirates’ 8-6 victory over the Brewers on Monday night, Fleming allowed a grand slam to Jake Bauers and gave up a two-run double to Willy Adames.

He started the seventh inning with the Pirates ahead 5-0 before allowing Adames’ double. After the Pirates extended their lead to 7-2 in the top of the eighth, Fleming faced four batters in the bottom of the inning without retiring any. Blake Perkins and Gary Sánchez opened with singles, and after Joey Ortiz reached on an error by shortstop Oneil Cruz to load the bases, Bauers hit a shot over the right field wall to cut Pittsburgh’s lead to 7-6.

Five of the six runs Fleming allowed were earned.

Ryan, 29, has gone 1-0 with a 3.00 ERA in nine relief appearances with Pittsburgh this season. He also has an 0-0 record and 3.86 ERA in five games with Indianapolis.

“This guy throws a sinker that really does a nice job of getting ground balls when he executes it,” Shelton said.
