Assignment sub-plugins

The mod_assign activity can be extended using two sub-plugin types, namely:

• submission plugins, used to provide different ways for students to submit their content
• feedback plugins, used to extend the ways in which feedback may be provided to students on their submissions

Using the Assignment Regex Plugin

UP’s Regex Assignment plugin can assist you with automatically validating a file submission based on its content and filename. To use:

Create a Moodle Assignment in your course. If you need help creating an Assignment please see the Moodle Guide on assignments .

In the Assignment settings, make sure that  File submissions is selected and that the  Maximum number of allowed files is 1. Then tick the box for File Regex validation

Use the File name Regex field to validate submission file names. Leave this empty if you don’t want to validate the filename.

Note: If you just want to ensure students are submitting a particular type of file (such as a PDF, .docx, etc) you may find it easier to use the Accepted File Type option in the Moodle assignment settings.

Use the Content regex to validate the contents of a text file. You can use the expression to ensure students submit a file that has content that matches or does not match your expression.

If you need additional Content fields, you can add them with the  Add fields  button.

Note : This page is about the new Assignment module in Moodle 2.3 onwards. For documentation about Assignments (2.2), see Assignment module in the 2.2 docs.

The assignment module allows teachers to collect work from students, review it and provide feedback including grades. The work a student submits is visible only to the teacher and not to other students.

Students can submit any digital content (files), including, for example, word-processed documents, spreadsheets, images, audio and video clips. Assignments don't necessarily have to consist of file uploads. Alternatively, teachers can ask students to type directly into a text field in Moodle. Or they can ask student to do both, upload a file or files and type text directly into Moodle. An assignment activity can also be set up to not accept any student submissions and serve as a reminder to students of a 'real-world' assignment they need to complete and to record grades in Moodle for activities that don't have an online component.

An assignment has an 'available from' date before which no students can submit anything, and a due date, after which teachers can choose not to accept submissions any more.

Markers can choose to be notified every time a student submits an assignment, or only for late submissions. Markers can choose to give students feedback in the form of text or uploaded files.

Two assignment modules

New feature in Moodle 2.3!

Moodle 2.3 includes two assignment modules - the new assignment module (a rewrite of the old assignment module) under /mod/assign/ and the old assignment module under /mod/assignment/ with four subtypes, renamed 'Assignments (2.2)'.

For new Moodle 2.3 installs, Assignments (2.2) is disabled/hidden. For sites which have upgraded from Moodle 2.2, both assignment modules are available. It is recommended that admins upgrade all existing assignments to use the new assignment module as soon as possible, as described in Assignment upgrade tool , then disable Assignments (2.2), to avoid the confusion of having two assignment modules.

Adding Turnitin to a Moodle Assignment

Turnitin enables seamless integration with Moodle . Once your administrator has configured Turnitin for your organization, you can use Turnitin as a part of your normal Moodle workflow using Moodle assignments.

Your administrator can set defaults that will apply to all assignments you create. One option they have is to automatically have Turnitin active.

• If you've never created a Moodle assignment before, navigate to a course and select the Turn editing on button . Select the + Add an activity or resource link that appears.
• From the Activities list , choose Assignment .

• Set dates for the Allow Submissions From and Due Date settings. These dates act as the Start date and Due date for Turnitin too.

• The first setting, Enable Turnitin, may already be enabled. Your administrator will determine its initial state when first creating the integration. If you want to use Turnitin with the assignment make sure it is ticked.
• (Optional) There are several other options within the Turnitin Integrity Plugin's settings that you can customize for each assignment. The defaults are set by your administrator. Feel free to change any that you need to!

Generate Similarity Reports

Immediately : The similarity report will be generated as soon as a file is uploaded. Immediately and regenerate on due date : A similarity report will be generated after a file is uploaded and then we will regenerate it on the due date. This is useful when looking for collusion within a group. Due date : Files will only receive a similarity report on the due date of the assignment all files will be checked against each other for collusion.

Submission Indexing

Index all submissions - This option will add files automatically to your organization's private repository. This makes them available to be matched against in similarity reports by other people within your organization.

Student Access

Allow students to view Similarity Reports - This setting determines if students are able to see similarity reports that are generated.

Exclude from Similarity Reports

Bibliography and Quotes - Allows you to automatically exclude bibliographies and quotes from the similarity reports. Want to know more? Check out the guide .

Process draft submissions

Process draft submissions - Use draft submissions? This setting will allow similarity reports to be generated for each draft of a submission.

Moodle Assignment Submission Plugin Help

The Assignment Submission Plugin provides the ability for Teachers/Lecturers to create an assignment within Moodle and for students to upload video/audio content in their assignment submission.

Assignment submissions added via Moodle are converted into a streaming media format and stored on your Planet eStream system. Submissions are private and are not available to users visiting the Planet eStream system.

Teachers/Lecturers can then view all submitted assignments from within Moodle Gradebook.

It's also possible to use the plugin to upload a video as a form of student feedback.

How to Create a New Assignment as a Teacher/Lecturer

• Within the relevant course page within Moodle, turn editing on and click Add an activity or resource .
• Click Assignment and then click the Add button.

Enter a name and a description for the new assignment.

To insert a video containing the description of your assignment:

• Click the Media icon in the toolbar of the text editor, the Insert media dialogue will appear.
• Click Browse repositories .
• From the options on the left, click Planet eStream Search .

At this stage you can use the search box to enter keywords, search the Planet eStream system, locate and embed an item into the description of the assignment.

Upload a video/audio file from your system, and embed the video in the description of the assignment.

To upload a file:

• Click the add & embed link - the upload dialogue will appear.
• Click the Browse button and select the file to be uploaded.
• Enter a title and description for the item.

Set the options for the item.

Set the upload as Public to make the item available both within the description of the assignment and potentially also available to users directly visiting the Planet eStream system. Set the upload as Private to be available within the description of the assignment only.

• Click the Upload File button. The upload dialogue will close and the uploaded file will be converted into a streaming media format by the Planet eStream server.
• Click Search to find the uploaded item. Please note that the item will be represented as a placeholder until the file has been processed by the Planet eStream server.
• Select the item within the search results and click Insert media . The placeholder will be inserted into the description of the assignment and subsequently automatically replaced with an embedded video player containing the uploaded video/audio content.
• Under Availability , select the dates that submissions are accepted from/until.
• Under Submission types , tick the Video/Audio Submission option. De-select the other options.
• Set the remainder of the options for the assignment, if required. For comprehensive details on the options available, please see the Moodle Assignment Docs .
• Click the Save and display button at the bottom of the page.

How to View/Grade Submitted Assignments as a Teacher/Lecturer

• Click on the link to the assignment from within the course page in Moodle.
• Click the view/grade all submissions link.
• The uploaded media for each submission will be displayed and can be graded using the standard Moodle grading tools.
• To open Moodle Gradebook, select View gradebook from the Grading action list.

• You can also use the Planet eStream plugin to upload a video as feedback on a student's submission.

How to Submit an Assignment as a Student

• The upload page will load, containing a dialogue with Browse and Upload buttons.
• Click Browse and select the Video/Audio file to be uploaded.
• Click Upload to upload the file.
• Once the upload has completed, the page will automatically refresh and display a placeholder representing your submission.
• The submission process is now complete and no further action is required. Your submission will be processed by the Planet eStream server and the placeholder will be automatically replaced with an embedded video player containing the uploaded video/audio content.
