During the cover interview, Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman were asked about their futures in the MCU, with the entire fan base wondering if their near-immortal characters would return again. Both Reynolds and Jackman were tight-lipped. Not out of fear of spoilers or over-committing, but because of the 'Marvel Police' (a running joke between MCU actors who believe Kevin Feige will send a secret hit-squad after them if they spoil too much). Ryan Reynolds simply answered:

"I’m very nervous talking to you."

The fear was a sentiment shared by Hugh Jackman. Deadpool & Wolverine will mark the actor's 10th outing as the iconic X-Men hero. Latching on to what Reynolds said, Hugh Jackman also answered:

"I’ve never been so scared of what’s coming out of my mouth."

Ryan Reynolds Has Previously Said He Will Retire Deadpool

Deadpool feels like the role Ryan Reynolds was born to play, and fans can't imagine anyone else wearing the iconic red suit after Reynolds retires. While Reynolds and Jackman's answers may be hiding a desire to return once again as their respective characters, it would mark a change since the last time Ryan Reynolds was asked the same question.

Speaking on The Jess Cagle Show , Reynolds was asked the same question in November 2022. The actor's response back then was more direct, and disappointed many fans. The actor said:

'The Sympathizer's Latest Episode Tackles the Complicated Legacy of Vietnam War Movies

Episode 4 shows that Hollywood isn't interested in earnestly examining the Vietnamese experience.

Hollywood has long been interested in telling stories about the Vietnam War, as many of the most influential filmmakers of all time began their careers when the conflict was still active. While movies about World War II have been popular because of the straightforward plight of combating fascism, films about the Vietnam War have struggled to justify the United States’ involvement in an international civil conflict. This is part of why Park Chan-wook ’s brilliant HBO miniseries The Sympathizer is such a breath of fresh air, depicting the complex social, political, and ethical dilemmas of the Vietnam War from the perspective of a Communist spy.

Set after the fall of Saigon during the last days of the Vietnam War, The Sympathizer follows a North Vietnamese spy known as “The Captain” ( Hoa Xuande ) as he infiltrates various infrastructural institutions. While The Captain’s early missions involve going undercover within the American CIA offensive, the fourth episode, “Give Us Some Good Lines,” allows him to bear witness to the production of a major Hollywood war movie. By illustrating the motivations of the creative artists and disturbing on-set antics, The Sympathizer examines the complicated legacy of Hollywood Vietnam War movies like Apocalypse Now .

The Sympathizer

Near the end of the Vietnam War, a plant who was embedded in the South Vietnam army flees to the United States and takes up residence in a refugee community, where he continues to secretly spy and report back to the Viet Cong.

‘The Sympathizer’ Points Out the Failings of Hollywood Vietnam Movies

After a brief introduction in the episode “Love It Or Leave It,” the Captain is recruited by the highly eccentric American film director Nicos Damianos ( Robert Downey Jr. ) to serve as a consultant on the production of his newest war epic, titled The Hamlet . While theoretically the Captain is hired to ensure that the film is accurate, The Sympathizer shows that Hollywood isn’t interested in earnestly examining the Vietnamese experience. The Captain raises points about how inaccurately The Hamlet depicts life in a Vietnamese village and even notes that there aren’t any Vietnamese extras involved. His perspective is routinely ignored, as the intention is to make an epic war movie designed to appeal to American audiences.

Thanks to one of Downey Jr.’s greatest performances, The Sympathizer illustrates how directors like Damianos utilize the trauma of the Vietnam War to boost their ego. Damianos frequently lectures the Captain about his own brilliance, stating that he wants to make an immersive war film that will allow the audience to experience the pain and anguish prevalent within the conflict. The issue is that Damianos has no interest in hearing the Vietnamese perspective; he sees them purely as victims and essentially treats them as props. Despite the film’s intentions to honor the horror that the Vietnamese people went through, Damianos is more than willing to insult and humiliate the Vietnamese extras that the Captain hires to join the production.

The Sympathizer also emphasizes the irresponsibility of utilizing real moments of tragedy for the sake of populist entertainment . Despite being relatively quiet when voicing his concerns about The Hamlet , the Captain becomes enraged with Damianos when he learns that his mother’s name is being used as the name of a character who is being assaulted; while Damianos feels that it makes the film more “personal,” the Captain doesn’t want to re-experience the trauma that he knows all too well. The lines between fiction and reality continue to become blurred when his friend Lana ( Vy Le ) is hired to film the scene; the Captain is forced to disrupt the production when he fears that highly eccentric method actor Ryan Glenn ( David Duchovny ) will attempt to assault her for real.

'The Sympathizer' Pays Homage to the Production of 'Apocalypse Now'

The Captain’s experiences making The Hamlet are a clear parallel to the chaotic production of Apocalypse Now , which infamously drove director Francis Ford Coppola to his breaking point. Coppola’s ambitious war epic was beset with delays, malfunctioning technology, and constant rewrites; in many ways, the journey of obsession and isolation that he took making the film mirrors the arc of Apocalypse Now ’s protagonist, Captain Willard ( Martin Sheen ). Apocalypse Now has been the source of debates over whether the ends justify the means. The Sympathizer complicates this debate because of the similarities between Coppola and Damianos; while Damianos may not have Coppola’s talent, he certainly shares a sense of ego.

The Sympathizer also alludes to Marlon Brando's infamous method acting on the set of Apocalypse Now . While it’s cited as one of his best performances , Brando’s process of getting into character to play the volatile Colonel Walter Kurtz made the film’s production even more difficult. The Sympathizer questions the merits of method acting by showing how intolerable Glenn’s behavior becomes on set; while he claims that remaining in character helps to immerse him in the narrative, Glenn really uses his method acting to act like a violent jerk without ever facing the consequences.

‘The Sympathizer’ Questions Whether Objective War Movies Are Possible

While the result of Damianos’ efforts is not revealed, The Sympathizer questions the purpose of war movies , suggesting that even an “anti-war” film can’t help but sensationalize the conflict. By constructing a fictional story in which the audience is either rooting against or for a character, Damianos has removed any sense of objectivity from The Hamlet . Damianos inserts Glenn as the film’s antagonist and a heroic character played by soul singer Jamie Johnson ( Maxwell Whittington-Cooper ) as the film’s two main areas of focus; in reality, ethics on the battlefield were far more ambiguous. The Captain’s suggestions about improving the film’s accuracy are ignored because they don’t seem “cinematic.”

Despite its criticism of the way Hollywood has depicted the conflict, The Sympathizer serves as a fascinating deconstruction of the ramifications of the Vietnam War. The Captain may be the point-of-view character, but he’s not a hero; Park and the creative team behind The Sympathizer reveal this era of violence and espionage as the ugly war it was.

In that article , Daniels said Trump told her "come here" and they started kissing on the bed. Daniels confirms Trump did say "come here."

"You made all this up, right?" Necheles asks. "No," says Daniels.

Necheles says that Daniels didn't say Trump stood up in the In Touch interview. "This is an abbreviated version," Daniels reiterates, also saying she wasn't trying to get money at the time.

We've heard a lot about dinner — namely, whether it was eaten or not when Trump and Stormy Daniels met — as Trump attorney Susan Necheles zeroes in on what she argues is an inconsistency in Daniels' story.

"So you're saying, when you said, 'We had dinner,' you didn’t mean that, right?" Necheles asks.

Daniels has repeatedly argued that saying the two met to "have dinner" doesn't necessarily mean they ate.

Trump attorney Susan Necheles has hammered Stormy Daniels in cross-examination to establish some of the ways the porn star gained publicity and money from her story going public.

Here are the highlights:

Denying the relationship: In a January 2018 statement, Daniels denied a sexual encounter with Trump. Later that same month, Daniels put out a second statement denying the relationship, but she said she did not release it after she signed it. Daniels says was pushed to sign the statement by Michael Cohen via Keith Davidson, adding, "I never spoke to Michael Cohen directly."

Going public about sex with Trump: Necheles asked Daniels if she eventually wanted to publicly announce she had sex with Trump.

"No. Nobody would ever want to publicly say that. I wanted to publicly defend myself," Daniels testified.

She benefitted from the publicity : Necheles asked a series of questions to establish examples of how Daniels benefitted from the story. A 60 Minutes interview and appearances on CNN and The View brought Daniels publicity, Necheles said. Daniels argued her then-lawyer Michael Avenatti arranged her appearances, but she said "he took everything else for himself. Daniels also negotiated a $800,000 book contract.

More ways she benefitted : Necheles continued to drill down on how Daniels "capitalized" on the moment after coming forward with her story. Here’s what Necheles outlined:

• Daniels did a strip club tour, called 'Make America Horny Again."
• Daniels appeared on "The Surreal Life” reality show.
• She received $100,000 from the documentary.

During the interview, Cooper asks Daniels if they went out for dinner. She says no. He asks if they had dinner in the room. She says yes. Daniels says it was dinner time but they didn't eat dinner.

"We did not have any food. I did not eat any food. I maintain that in every interview. That has not changed," Daniels says. "When you said to Anderson Cooper you didn’t really mean you had dinner, you meant something else?" Necheles asks. "We had dinner time in the room," Daniels said.

"Your words don’t mean what they say, do they?" Necheles asks. Judge Juan Merchan then sustained an objection.

NEW YORK (AP) — Donald Trump’s defense attorney on Thursday accused Stormy Daniels of slowly altering the details of an alleged 2006 sexual encounter with Trump, trying to convince jurors that a key prosecution witness in the former president’s hush money criminal trial cannot be believed.

“You have made all of this up, right?” lawyer Susan Necheles asked.

“No,” Daniels shot back.

As the jury looked on, the two women traded barbs over what Necheles said were inconsistencies in Daniels’ description of the encounter with Trump in a Nevada hotel suite. He denies the whole story.

But despite all the talk over what may have happened in that hotel room, despite the discomfiting testimony by the adult film actor that she consented to sex in part because of a “power imbalance,” the case against Trump doesn’t rise or fall on whether her account is true or even believable. It’s a trial about money changing hands — business transactions — and whether those payments were made to illegally influence the 2016 election.

Trump is charged with 34 counts of falsifying internal Trump Organization business records. The charges stem from paperwork such as invoices and checks that were deemed legal expenses in company records. Prosecutors say those payments largely were reimbursements to Trump attorney Michael Cohen, who paid Daniels $130,000 to keep quiet.

The testimony over the past three weeks has seesawed between bookkeepers and bankers relaying the nuts and bolts of check-paying procedures and wire transfers to unflattering, seamy stories about Trump and the tabloid world machinations meant to keep them secret.

This criminal case could be the only one against the presumptive Republican presidential nominee to go to trial before voters decide in November whether to send him back to the White House. Trump has pleaded not guilty and casts himself as the victim of a politically tainted justice system working to deny him another term.

Meanwhile, as the threat of jail looms over Trump following his repeated gag order violations, his attorneys are fighting Judge Juan M. Merchan’s order and seeking a fast decision in an appeals court. If the court refuses to lift the gag order, Trump’s lawyers want permission to take their appeal to the state’s high court.

At the same time, they also asked Merchan to modify the order so Trump could publicly respond to Daniels’ testimony and made a second request for a mistrial based on what they argued was her “extremely prejudicial testimony” that has “has nothing to do with the false business records” charges. Merchan rejected both.

“My concern is not just with protecting Ms. Daniels or a witness who has already testified. My concern is with protecting the integrity of these proceedings as a whole,” Merchan said in refusing to change the gag order.

Turning away the mistrial request, Merchan said Trump’s lawyers had opened to door to detailed testimony about the alleged sexual encounter when they asserted in their opening statement that no sex had occurred. “Your denial puts the jury in the position of choosing who they believe.”

“The more specificity Ms. Daniels can provide about the encounter, the more the jury can weigh about whether the encounter did occur and if so, whether they choose to credit Ms. Daniels’ story,” Merchan said.

Trump fumed outside the courtroom at the end of the day.

“I’m innocent,” he said. “I’m being held in this court with a corrupt judge who’s totally conflicted.”

At the time of the payment to Daniels, Trump and his campaign were reeling from the October 2016 publication of the never-before-seen 2005 “Access Hollywood” footage in which he boasted about grabbing women without their permission.

Prosecutors have argued that the political firestorm over the “Access Hollywood” tape hastened Cohen’s payment to keep Daniels from going public with her claims that could further hurt Trump in the eyes of female voters.

The tape rattled the Republican National Committee leadership, and “there were conversations about how it would be possible to replace him as the candidate if it came to that,” according to testimony from Madeleine Westerhout, a Trump aide who was working at the RNC when the recording leaked.

Daniels was on the stand for 7½ hours over two days. During questioning from prosecutors, she relayed in graphic detail what she said happened during their encounter, after the two met at a celebrity golf outing at Lake Tahoe where sponsors included the adult film studio where she worked.

Trump scowled and shook his head through much of Daniels’ description, including how she found him sitting on the hotel bed in his underwear after she returned from the bathroom and that he did not use a condom. The judge told Trump’s lawyers on Tuesday that he could hear him “cursing audibly.”

Trump’s lawyers sought to paint Daniels as a liar and extortionist who’s trying to take down Trump after drawing money and fame from her claims. And they say hush money payments made on his behalf were an effort to protect his reputation and family — not his campaign — by shielding them from embarrassing stories about his personal life.

On Thursday, Necheles grilled Daniels on her description of the encounter in which she described fear and discomfort even as she consented to sex. She testified earlier this week that while she wasn’t physically menaced, she felt a “power imbalance” as Trump, in his hotel bedroom, stood between her and the door and propositioned her.

As for whether she felt compelled to have sex with him, she reiterated Thursday that he didn’t drug her or physically threaten her. But, she said, “My own insecurities, in that moment, kept me from saying no.”

Necheles suggested that her work in porn meant her story about being shocked and frightened by Trump’s alleged sexual advances was not believable.

“You’ve acted and had sex in over 200 porn movies, right?” Necheles asked. “And there are naked men and women having sex, including yourself, in those movies, right?”

Necheles continued, “But according to you, seeing a man sitting on a bed in a T-shirt and boxers was so upsetting that you got lightheaded.”

The experience with Trump was different from porn for a number of reasons, Daniels explained, including the fact that Trump was more than twice her age and larger than she and that she was not expecting to find him undressed when she emerged from the bathroom.

“I came out of the bathroom and saw an older man in his underwear that I wasn’t expecting to see there,” she said.

Necheles pressed her on why she accepted the payout to keep quiet instead of going public.

“Why didn’t you do that?” she asked, wondering why Daniels didn’t hold a news conference as she had planned.

“Because we were running out of time,” Daniels said.

Did she mean, Necheles asked, that she was running out of time to use the claim to make money?

“To get the story out,” Daniels countered. The negotiations were happening in the final weeks of the 2016 presidential campaign.

She testified that she never spoke with Trump about payment, and said she had no knowledge of whether Trump was aware of or involved in the transaction.

“You have no personal knowledge about his involvement in that transaction or what he did or didn’t do,” Necheles asked.

“Not directly, no,” Daniels responded.

Prosecutor Susan Hoffinger later asked Daniels, “Have you been telling lies about Mr. Trump or the truth about Mr. Trump?”

“The truth,” said Daniels, who also said that although she has made money since her story emerged, she also has had to spend a lot to hire security, move homes and take other precautions, and she still owes Trump hundreds of thousands of dollars in attorneys’ fees.

“On balance, has publicly telling the truth about Mr. Trump been a net positive or net negative in your life?” Hoffinger asked.

“Negative,” Daniels replied quietly.
