What can we help you with?

Jan 7, 2023 • knowledge, information, article details, what is reserved seating and how does it work.

For select theaters on Fandango, you can  reserve your exact seat  when you buy your tickets in advance. To find a Reserved Seating theater, look for the "Reserved Seating" icon next to the show times. Once you've selected your show time and   number of tickets, you'll see a seatmap on the next page where you can pick from available seats.

How do I use the seatmap?

The movie screen is represented at the top of the seat map and the first row underneath the screen is the front row. The blue squares are the available seats and gray squares are the seats that are unavailable or already reserved. The squares with a wheelchair icon indicate spaces reserved for wheelchairs. To reserve your seat(s), please click on any of the blue squares. Once you've completed your purchase, you can find your specific seat number on your confirmation page and email.

Please note that we're not able to leave a single open seat in between selected seats. Seat(s) adjacent to wheelchair accessible areas are reserved for companion seating. Guests not in need of such accommodations may be asked to move or issued a refund.

How to pick the perfect seat in a movie theater for sound and picture

You paid a lot to get into the theater, make sure it's worth the price of the ticket.

By Eric Alt | Updated Jul 26, 2022 11:04 AM EDT

Life Skills photo

Nearly everyone at one time or another has had to endure seeing a blockbuster movie from the POV of a milk mustache under the main character’s nose. The front row is where the tardy are relegated, where those who have yet to master the chicanery of pre-orders and reserved seating must be exiled. There is no question that they are the worst seats in any house. The existence of a worst, then, must suggest its opposite: The ideal seat. The perfect focal point that maximizes your visual and aural experience. Does it exist?

For a standard movie theater with exit rows on the sides (as opposed to down the middle, as some older theaters have), the best spot is as close to dead center as you can get. “I’ve always felt the obvious best spot to sit in a movie theater is in the center of the room, center with the screen. This way your eyes are more centralized and not straining to catch things on the very left or right side of the image on screen,” says Joe Muto, head projectionist for Nitehawk Cinemas. You also don’t want to have too wide of a vertical viewing angle so you have to look too far up or down to see the whole screen. That’s a large part of what makes sitting in the front row so unpleasant for most people.

The center positioning is also good for sound. “You have the best placement for surround sound, and your ears catch the full effect of all the speakers in the house working together,” says Muto. Sitting too close to one side isn’t as much of a downside as it once was, at least from a sound perspective. Audio companies like THX now try to tune the speaker performance and arrangement to deliver more consistent sound to everyone in the room. Still, you have to trust your ears and listen for things like audible reflections, in which sound echoes off of non-speaker surfaces in the room and can make dialog sound muddy or hard to understand.

A lot of it depends on factors beyond just seat location, which can be frustrating if your theater isn’t all that engaged in improving or monitoring the customer experience. “Often, theaters will not regularly update their projector lamps, causing the brightness of the image to dim significantly over time,” says Muto. “That can absolutely affect the viewing experience. Keeping the projector lamps up to spec, especially in a very big auditorium, is crucial. Especially for a mainstream or Hollywood movie.” In a case like this, you’re not going to get the best experience no matter where you plunk your popcorn.

When you factor IMAX, however, the variables aren’t exactly the same. “We have a patented design for our theater geometry,” explains Brian Bonnick, chief technical officer for IMAX. “We start off with a screen that goes from wall to wall, floor to ceiling as opposed to having – in most theaters – a frame around it. The second step is that the seating deck is stadium style, and it’s much closer to the screen. So your field of view becomes much larger, from any seat in the theater.” Sitting in the front row as opposed to the back row in a traditional theater means your geometric relationship to the screen is wildly different. Bonnick describes the IMAX system as “stouter,” with less variation from seat to seat.

They also extend this level of detail to the sound as well. “The loudspeakers are then designed where they’re going to sit in the venue. This is done independently for every single theater in CAD,” says Bonnick. “So when the guys arrive on site, they get an X-Y-Z coordinate for each loudspeaker, for where it is to be hung. Once it’s mounted there, we have a target little bigger than a hockey puck and it is stuck somewhere else in the theater and we use a laser to aim each loudspeaker to its individual target. And those targets are all calculated so that each loudspeaker’s sound dispersion is hitting every seat in the theater evenly.”

Still, even when he’s in an IMAX theater himself, Bonnick finds himself adhering to the “2/3 of the way from the screen, in the middle” concept—even though he admits he does so “more out of habit than anything.”

AMC Theatres will bring reserved seating to most of its theaters by Memorial Day

  • AMC Theatres will unveil reserved seating at most of its movie theaters, either online or at the theater locations, the company confirmed to Business Insider.
  • The option has slowly been rolled out to new and renovated theaters, but by Memorial Day, reserved seating will be available at all AMC branded and AMC Dine-In theaters, according to Stephen Colanero, Chief Marketing Officer at AMC.
  • Mobile ordering of food and beverages is also expanding at the chain.
  • According to Colanero, the option to order food and drinks before you get to the theater will expand to AMCs in New York, Los Angeles, San Diego, and San Francisco this month and next.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

AMC Theatres, the largest movie chain in the world, will allow moviegoers to reserve seats — either online or at most of its theaters in the US — beginning Memorial Day, the company confirmed to Business Insider.

Insider Today

"We are just on the cusp of finishing that project," Stephen Colanero, Chief Marketing Officer at AMC, told Business Insider on Wednesday, saying the feature would be available for all AMC branded theaters and AMC Dine-In theaters (though not for AMC Classic theaters). "All those theaters will have reserved seating by Memorial Day, which makes it a lot easier for people to buy tickets online because they now can pick their seats."

For the past few years, the chain has been slowly rolling out the reserved seating option, but it was mostly available at newer theaters or renovated ones with recliner seats or huge Imax screens. In August 2016, New York became the first major city where AMCs had a reserved seating option.

The chain is also expanding its mobile ordering of food and beverage heading into the summer months.

The option to order your food ahead of time on the app, and either have it prepared and ready when you get to your seat (if you're at an AMC Dine-In), or waiting in a pick-up area when you get to the theater, launched in three markets in March (Boston, Denver, and Houston) and is expanding to New York, Los Angeles, San Diego, and San Francisco in May and June.

"If it's a 7:00 movie, you can say to have it ready at 6:50 and we will have the food ready at that time to pick up or delivered to your seat," Colanero said.

And mobile food and beverage ordering is catching on with AMC customers. According to the company, the Friday that "Avengers: Endgame" opened, the company doubled its previous record of food and beverage mobile orders. The chain then broke that new record the following day.

In the company's earnings call on Thursday, AMC Theatres CEO Adam Aron said US food and beverage set a new first-quarter record for the company, with a capture of $5.23 per patron.

How to Find the Best Seat in Any Movie Theater

non reserved seating movie theaters

There’s a reason we wait in line outside the theater for big movie releases: because where you sit matters. A prime, central location will not only ensure the most direct view and best surround experience, it will also save your neck and keep you out of the path of mid-movie bathroomgoers. But what’s the best spot to plant your flag when those doors swing open?

About two thirds of the way back, as close to the center as possible.

This may sound a bit vague, but it’s based on how engineers typically calibrate a theater’s sound system. According to Steve Martz, director of global technology at audio company THX , technicians will take microphone measurements at several locations throughout the theater. “These measurements are averaged together in order to better evaluate what each person hears when they are watching a movie,” he says.

This bundle of microphones includes a “primary microphone” that is used to set playback levels, speaker timing, and other parameters that require a single location for measurements and calibration. To get the best possible sound, you want to sit as close as possible to where this mic is positioned: About two-thirds of the way back, in the center of the row. “THX designs every seat to be a good seat, but most people would do well to sit near the primary microphone position,” Martz notes. “And then spread out to other areas as the cinema gets full.”

The best way to fan out to other areas: Snag a seat near the center of a row in order to maintain audio and visual symmetry, and then move forward toward the screen rather than back to the nosebleeds. “Moving in this direction increases your horizontal viewing angle,” explains Martz. “It essentially increases your peripheral vision.”

Recent developments make this less of a concern than it was in the past, particularly if you’re in a theater that has been upgraded with new sound technology. Martz says THX specifically designs its speakers and layouts so that sound is delivered to each seat evenly, and keeps its theaters regularly tuned by on-site engineers. IMAX theaters take it a step further, with permanent microphones that automatically calibrate the theater’s sound on a daily basis, as well as laser-aligned loudspeakers that are precisely placed in order to distribute equal volume to almost every seat. “In good theaters, no matter the size or seating configuration, moviegoers should enjoy a good presentation,” Martz says.

Of course, most theaters, especially older ones that haven’t been refurbished in a while , don’t have one of these sophisticated audio setups — meaning the sprint for the sweet spot is as important as ever.

How can I volunteer?

We are very excited to welcome volunteers into our new theater. Please check out our Volunteer page for more information on how to join us.

What’s the history of the venue?

The Cinerama first opened in 1963 but met with declining business and faced demolition by the late 1980s. Paul Allen purchased the theater and began a series of renovations, creating a destination theater for blockbuster first-run movies and a variety of film festivals. The venue closed following Allen’s death and prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. Pursuant to Allen’s wishes, it was earmarked to be sold with all Estate proceeds to be dedicated to philanthropy.

Why did you have to change the name?

Vulcan/The Allen Estate licensed the name from the original owner when it reopened 20+ years ago, but did not own the name “Cinerama.” The original terms of use of the name stated that upon sale, the name reverts solely to the owner and cannot be transferred with the property.

SIFF Cinema Downtown will be a temporary name until we determine a feasible timeline of moving forward to involve the public to select a permanent name and funding rebrand costs.

How was this acquisition financially possible for SIFF?

SIFF was presented with an exciting opportunity to acquire the Cinerama in late 2022 and is very grateful for the dedicated board members, donors, and grantors who supported this dream with financing. Without these generous funders, this simply would not have been possible for SIFF. In the coming months, SIFF will need even more community support as we move forward with a Capital Campaign to raise funds for first year startup costs. Consider a donation today .

SIFF is a non-profit, and this acquisition was something we hoped for, but would not have been possible without external funding. These designated contributions, the Wyncote foundation, the Paul Allen Estate’s generosity, and passionate funders made this possible for SIFF and for the community.

How will SIFF be using the City of Seattle & King County grants approved in August 2023?

Sums of $950,000 allotted in the City of Seattle’s mid-year supplemental budget, and $1,000,000 from King County were both approved August 2023. These funds will make it possible to open the theater as soon as possible and help with:

  • Signage – New signage was needed to cover any instance of the Cinerama name/mark, due to the legalities of the trademark law that was a part of the agreement in acquiring the space.
  • Staffing - This will be one of the largest expenses to start this business, requiring 20+ employees to be hired and trained prior to opening.
  • Acquisition - SIFF will use a portion of the King County funding to help offset the building acquisition costs.
  • Equipment Refurbishing - The theater is in beautiful shape, so no major renovations were needed. SIFF has refurbished equipment that had been sitting unused for three years including concessions, IT infrastructure and projection equipment, which all require time and funds. To get to the chocolate popcorn is more work than you would imagine!
  • Public Benefit Programs - A large part of the City funds will also be allocated towards starting and sustaining new programs outlined in the budget amendment, including new positions and internships as well as community outreach programming.

Can I read more about SIFF’s path to reopening the theater?

Sure! Take a look at the May 11 press release (“SIFF Acquires Seattle Cinerama Theater,” as well as our archived Updates page for some background info on how we got to a reopening date.

Stadium Seating Explained: Design, Standards, and Impact

Published on: December 11, 2023 Written by Evander Mac / Fact-checked by Jamal Haider

Stadium seating refers to a tiered seating arrangement commonly found in large venues, particularly sports arenas and movie theaters. This design elevates each row of seats above the one in front of it, ensuring an unobstructed view for every spectator.

Stadium seating is a critical aspect of modern venue design, enhancing the viewing experience in various settings, from sports arenas to movie theaters. The concept is simple yet effective: each successive row is positioned higher than the one in front, allowing spectators to enjoy clear, unblocked views. This design is especially prevalent in large stadiums, where accommodating a vast number of spectators without compromising on visibility is essential.

The number of seats in a stadium can vary widely, depending on the venue’s size and purpose. Large sports stadiums, for instance, can accommodate tens of thousands of spectators. The seating arrangement is meticulously planned and detailed in stadium seating charts, which help attendees locate their seats and understand the layout of the venue. These charts are crucial for large events, where efficiently guiding a massive influx of people to their designated seats is a logistical necessity.

Stadium seating design also plays a pivotal role in enhancing the overall experience. Seats are not only arranged for optimal visibility but are also designed for comfort and safety, adhering to specific stadium seating standards. These standards ensure that each seat offers a satisfactory view while maintaining necessary safety measures.

what is stadium seating

In the realm of entertainment, stadium seating has transformed the movie-going experience. Theaters with stadium seating, such as Regal cinemas, provide moviegoers with a clear, unobstructed view of the screen, replicating a mini-version of the sports stadium experience. This seating style is now a sought-after feature in modern movie theaters, elevating the cinematic experience.

For a more detailed exploration of stadium seating, including its various applications in sports and entertainment, and insights into different seating designs and standards, I invite you to read the comprehensive article below.

What is Stadium Seating?

Early history and development.

Stadium seating isn’t a new concept; it’s been around for centuries. Think back to the ancient amphitheaters of Greece and Rome, where tiered seating was used to give audiences a clear view of the stage. This early design set the foundation for modern stadium seating. It was all about creating a space where everyone could see the action, whether it was a play, a gladiator fight, or a public speech.

Transition to Modern Stadium Design

Fast forward to the present, and you’ll see how much stadium seating has evolved. Today’s stadiums are architectural marvels, combining aesthetics, functionality, and technology. The transition from simple stone steps to cushioned, retractable seats reflects our understanding of audience comfort and the importance of an unobstructed view. This evolution mirrors the changing dynamics of public entertainment and the growing demand for more immersive experiences.

Design Principles of Stadium Seating

Ergonomics and comfort.

When we talk about stadium seating today, comfort is key. Designers focus on ergonomics, ensuring that seats support your back and legs, even during those nail-biting overtime periods or extended concerts. It’s not just about seeing the game or show; it’s about enjoying it without getting a stiff neck or sore back.

Sightlines and Visibility

Visibility is the cornerstone of stadium seating design. The goal is to ensure that every seat in the house offers a clear view. This involves calculating sightlines – imaginary lines from the viewer’s eye to the stage or field. Designers work hard to minimize obstructions, ensuring that even the farthest seat offers a decent view of the action.

Comparison of Sightline Angles in Different Stadiums

visual chart (1) comparison of sightline angles in different stadiums

Stadium Seating Standards and Regulations

Safety measures and compliance.

Safety is a top priority in stadium design. Standards and regulations ensure that seating is not only comfortable but also safe. This includes aspects like structural integrity, fire safety, and emergency egress routes. Compliance with these standards is non-negotiable, as the well-being of thousands of spectators depends on it.

Accessibility and Inclusivity

Inclusivity in stadium seating means ensuring that everyone, regardless of physical ability, can enjoy events . This includes wheelchair-accessible seating, adequate legroom, and easy access to facilities. It’s about creating an environment where all fans can come together to share their passion.

Global Stadium Seating Safety Standards

Stadium seating in sports arenas, design variations across sports.

Different sports require different seating arrangements. In basketball arenas, fans want to be close to the court, while in football stadiums, a panoramic view is preferred. This leads to variations in design, with each sport tailoring the seating layout to enhance the viewing experience .

Impact on Fan Experience

The design of stadium seating directly impacts how fans experience the game. Good seating brings them closer to the action, creating a more intimate and thrilling atmosphere. It’s about feeling the energy of the crowd and being part of the excitement.

Iconic Sports Stadiums and Their Seating Arrangements

Stadium seating in theaters and entertainment venues, evolution in movie theaters.

Stadium seating revolutionized the movie theater experience. Gone are the days of flat floors and blocked views. Modern theaters mimic the tiered design of sports arenas, ensuring everyone has a clear view of the screen. It’s about immersing yourself in the movie without distractions.

The Role of Stadium Seating in Enhancing Viewing Experience

In theaters, stadium seating does more than provide a good view; it enhances the overall experience. It creates a sense of space and privacy, allowing you to get lost in the film. This design also improves acoustics, ensuring that you catch every line of dialogue and every note of the soundtrack.

Seating Capacity and Layout in Major Movie Theaters

visual chart (2) seating capacity and layout in major movie theaters

Technological Advancements and Future Trends

Innovative materials and sustainable practices.

The future of stadium seating is not just about comfort and views; it’s also about sustainability. Designers are experimenting with eco-friendly materials and energy-efficient designs. It’s about reducing the carbon footprint while enhancing the spectator experience.

Future of Stadium Seating in a Digital Era

Technology is reshaping stadium seating. We’re seeing seats with built-in screens, wireless charging, and even virtual reality enhancements. The future is about blending the physical and digital worlds to create a new kind of spectator experience.

The Economic Impact of Stadium Seating

Revenue generation and seating capacity.

Stadium seating plays a big role in a venue’s profitability. More seats mean more tickets sold, but it’s a balancing act. The goal is to maximize capacity without compromising on comfort or safety. It’s about finding that sweet spot where every seat is the best seat in the house.

Cost-Benefit Analysis of Stadium Renovations

Upgrading stadium seating can be costly, but it often pays off. Improved seating can lead to higher ticket sales, better fan retention, and increased venue attractiveness for events. It’s an investment in the fan experience and, ultimately, in the venue’s future.

What Are the Environmental Impacts of Stadium Seating?

The environmental impact of stadium seating is significant, especially considering the materials used and the waste generated. Traditional stadium seats are often made from plastics and metals, which require a lot of energy and resources to produce.

When stadiums are renovated or demolished, these seats can end up in landfills if not properly recycled.

There’s a growing trend towards using sustainable materials and implementing recycling programs. Some modern stadiums are adopting seats made from recycled materials or designed for easier disassembly and recycling. This shift not only reduces the carbon footprint but also promotes a more sustainable approach to stadium construction and renovation.

How Does Stadium Seating Affect Audience Behavior?

Stadium seating can greatly influence audience behavior. The arrangement and comfort of seats can impact how spectators interact with the event and each other. Comfortable seating with good visibility encourages people to stay engaged and focused on the event. On the other hand, cramped or obstructed-view seating can lead to restlessness and frustration.

The way seats are arranged can affect crowd dynamics. For instance, seating that groups fans together can enhance the sense of community and collective enthusiasm, amplifying the overall energy of the event. Conversely, isolated or poorly arranged seating can dampen the communal experience and reduce interaction among spectators.

What Role Does Technology Play in Modern Stadium Seating?

Technology plays a pivotal role in modern stadium seating, enhancing comfort, convenience, and the overall experience. Seats are increasingly being equipped with advanced features like USB charging ports, Wi-Fi connectivity, and even personal screens. Some stadiums are experimenting with smart seats that can adjust temperature or provide information about the event. Technology also aids in crowd management and safety, with systems designed to monitor seat occupancy and facilitate efficient evacuation in emergencies. These technological advancements not only improve the spectator experience but also open up new possibilities for interactive and immersive event experiences.

Can Stadium Seating Impact a Venue’s Acoustics?

Yes, stadium seating can significantly impact a venue’s acoustics. The shape, size, and material of seats can affect how sound travels and is absorbed within the space. Properly designed seating can enhance sound quality by reducing echo and directing sound towards the audience. This is particularly important in concert halls and theaters, where acoustics play a crucial role in the audience’s experience. In sports stadiums, the design of seating can also contribute to the intensity of crowd noise, amplifying the excitement and energy of the event. Therefore, acoustics is a key consideration in the design and arrangement of stadium seating.

How Does Stadium Seating Influence Event Security?

Stadium seating design is a critical factor in event security. The layout of seats must allow for quick and safe evacuation in case of emergencies. Aisles need to be wide enough to handle large crowds, and exits must be easily accessible from all areas.

The visibility from seats can impact security measures. For instance, higher seats provide a broader view, which can help in identifying any disturbances or emergencies in the crowd. Security personnel also benefit from strategic seating layouts that allow them to monitor the audience effectively and respond quickly to any incidents.

What Is the Future of Stadium Seating Design?

The future of stadium seating design is likely to focus on flexibility, sustainability, and enhanced spectator experience. We can expect to see more modular seating designs that can be easily reconfigured for different types of events. Sustainability will also be a key focus, with increased use of eco-friendly materials and designs that minimize environmental impact.

There will be a greater emphasis on incorporating technology into seating, such as augmented reality experiences or personalized comfort controls. The goal will be to create seating that not only provides comfort and a great view but also enriches the overall event experience in innovative ways.

How Does Stadium Seating Affect Accessibility for People with Disabilities?

Stadium seating plays a crucial role in ensuring accessibility for people with disabilities. Venues must provide seating options that are accessible, comfortable, and offer a good view of the event. This includes wheelchair-accessible seating areas, seats with extra legroom, and easy access to facilities like restrooms and concession stands.

The design of stadiums must consider the ease of navigating to and from these seats. This means having ramps, elevators, and clearly marked accessible routes. Ensuring accessibility in stadium seating is not just about compliance with regulations; it’s about creating an inclusive environment where all spectators can enjoy events comfortably and without barriers.

Stadium seating has come a long way from its ancient roots. Today, it’s a blend of art and science, balancing comfort, safety, and visibility. Whether it’s in a sports arena, a movie theater, or any other large venue, the right seating arrangement can transform the spectator experience. As we look to the future, we can expect even more innovations, making every event an unforgettable experience.

It also works for AMC Dine-in locations — there, the items will be brought right to your seats. And AMC Stubs members can now earn or redeem concession perks through the Fandango app rather than just through AMC’s app.

Fandango as part of its 2024 Moviegoing Trends and Insights Study says that one in four general movie ticket buyers have dabbled with pre-ordering concessions in the past. So anything that makes it easier for more people to reach deeper into their pockets is something exhibitors could really use right now.

“We are excited to collaborate with AMC Theatres to bring these exciting new concessions offering to our users,” said Jerramy Hainline, EVP of Fandango. “At Fandango, our goal is to super-serve consumers with all their moviegoing needs, and launching the ability to pre-order concessions on our platform is another important step to bring even more convenience and joy to moviegoers.”

“This is a great advancement for Fandango users and AMC patrons. Moviegoers routinely take advantage of the opportunity to preorder their favorite AMC food and drink selections through the AMC mobile app and website. We are thrilled that our guests now have this option through the Fandango platform,” said Ellen Copaken, SVP, Marketing, AMC Theatres.
