CVC First Grade Spelling Words
Consonant Blends First Grade Spelling Words
Cvce first grade spelling words, first grade high-frequency words, first grade spelling words activities, popular first grade spelling bee words.
In first grade, kids are becoming more confident readers. They’re learning new phonics concepts that help them decode (sound out and understand) words that follow several regular spelling patterns, such as CVC words and CVCe words.
Different curriculum programs use different spelling lists for first grade, but the general phonics concepts they cover tend to be the same. These lists of first grade spelling words include strong examples in each category to help kids master important spelling rules . Be sure to grab our free printable lists that include these first grade spelling words!
CVC First Grade Spelling Words
These are words that follow the pattern consonant-vowel-consonant, like “cat” or “big.” In CVC words, vowels use their short sounds. Kids start learning CVC words in kindergarten and continue to master them in first grade.
In a consonant blend, both letters are pronounced in one smooth sound but the first blends into the second, like /tr/ in the word “trap.” (This is different from consonant digraphs in which two letters make one sound, such as “ck.”) First grade spelling lists often include these words, especially those that follow the pattern consonant-consonant-vowel-consonant (“skip”) and consonant-vowel-consonant-consonant (“fish”). They can also include words with blends at the beginning and end, like “frost” or “plant.”
Spelling Words with Consonant Blends
Beginning blends, ending blends, beginning & ending blends.
These are the silent-e words, following the pattern consonant-vowel-consonant-e. Think words like “gave,” “kite,” or “hole.” In these words, the middle vowel uses its long sound, so we often teach children that “silent-e makes vowels say their name.”
High-frequency words are the common words in written English, such as “the” and “have.” Learning these first grade spelling words can help kids learn to read more quickly and with less frustration.
By practicing spelling words that fit these first grade phonics concepts , kids build up their fluency in both reading and writing. They become more secure in their skills as they learn to decode words in print, and translate spoken words to written words. They also learn to enjoy the time they spend reading and writing.
First grade spelling practice doesn’t have to be boring! Try these spelling activities for first graders to make the experience engaging and fun.
- Play Memory Match Write each spelling word on two index cards, then mix up the set and lay them all out face down. Take turns turning over two cards at a time, then reading them out loud to see if they match. If they do, the player keeps the cards and takes another turn. Otherwise, play passes to the next player. At the end, each player can quiz the others using the spelling word cards they’ve collected.
- String Letter Beads Grab some pipe cleaners, letter beads, and your first grade spelling words lists. Then read out spelling words and have kids string the correct letters onto pipe cleaners. Tip: Is there a spelling word your child is having trouble mastering? Turn its pipe cleaner into a bracelet they can wear and use to refresh their memory all day long!
- Whack the Letters Write the alphabet on sticky notes, and put the notes on the wall above your child’s head. Call out a word from the first grade spelling words lists. Have your child jump up and whack each letter as they spell it out. Alternately, place the sticky note letters on the table or floor, and arm your student with a flyswatter to swat each letter in turn.
- Educational Spelling Games Spelling games like the ones you can find on the ABCmouse App are an excellent activity for first graders learning spelling words. These games tailored to engage young minds offer a balance of challenge and support to help them master new words. The interactive nature of the games makes learning more enjoyable and memorable, encouraging repeated play and thus reinforcing the spelling concepts. ABCmouse games often include visual and auditory elements, which cater to different learning styles, helping children to better retain the spelling of words.
These challenging first grade spelling words come from the Scripps National Spelling Bee list of first grade words. See more spelling bee words for first grade here.

I also offer details about my Year-Long Weekly Word Study Resource that offers weekly word lists, practice activities, parent letters, assessments and MORE for k-3!
Hey Friends!
I’m curious…. in your already crowded instruction schedule, does word study have a place? Have you found a way to make spelling instructiion more than just giving a list of words on Monday and assessing on Friday? Resources for teaching spelling can be hard to come by. Sometimes it feels like with the intense focus on more critical thinking skills in literacy, explicit spelling instruction (or word study) has become an outdated practice.
But I think we can all agree we all want our students to be strong spellers! Spelling is important! It is related to reading. If students can spell well, they will read well. It’s related to writing. When students spell well they can focus on communicating their ideas, rather than worrying about how to construct words.
If you are looking for a word study program to use with your students, or maybe just looking to freshen up your spelling activities then you have come to the right place. Today I’m excited to describe to you the Year-Long Weekly Word Study bundles I have created for kindergarten, first, second and third grade, as well as share my FREE, NO PREP Spelling Activities!

It is totally free and provides meaningful practice and the repetition students need for mastery of the spelling words and phonics patterns you teach. With many activities to choose from, spelling practice will always feel fresh and engaging for students.
To save you time, I created these Spelling Activities as an editable “autofill” document. Once you type your words into the word list, you simply print the pages you want to use.
Any of these activities make a great addition to your weekly word work routine. Simply pair the spelling word cards with a pocket chart and print a few activities for an instant literacy center! They also make great morning work or homework practice.

A Year-Long Weekly Word Study Resource for K-3
So while the activity pages I’ve shared above could be used in a variety of ways, I know there are teachers who are looking for more. They want an actual program that explicitly teaches students different spelling patterns each week and offers them meaningful practice so students can master those patterns. That’s why I created Year-Long Weekly Word Study Resources for Kindergarten, first, second and third grade students.
Word study units are different from traditional spelling units. Instead of giving students a list of words to memorize each week, word study units focus on a specific phonics skill. Students are given explicit instruction on the phonics pattern. They engage in activities throughout the week that allow them to practice the phonics skill and investigate and discover the patterns in words.
Word study offers students opportunities to investigate and discover the patterns in words. When students have knowledge of these patterns they don’t learn to spell just one word at a time. They can generalize and apply their new learning to their reading and their writing.
My Weekly Word Study Units have EVERYTHING you need to provide your students with effective word study instruction and spelling practice all year long!
I have different units for kindergarten , first , second , AND third-grade students. While the units vary a bit from grade to grade, they all contain these core components:
💕 A Scope and Sequence
We know that for instruction to be most effective, it must be systematic and follow a scope and sequence . The scope and sequences included in these resources are based on my learning including Wiley Blevins’ book, A Fresh Look at Phonics *, The Reading Teacher’s Top Ten Tools, and Speech to Print and are specific for each grade.
💕 Word cards
These word cards can be printed out on card stock and used in centers, small groups, or for your whole group instruction.
💕 3 Editable Practice Printables for Each Unit
We know that in order for students to master the skills we teach they need a lot of practice. For every unit, you’ll get 3 editable practice printables. The activities vary slightly depending on grade and the skill that is being taught.
💕 Editable Assessments
While the assessments vary a bit from grade to grade, they all include:
– Word Dictation: words that follow the week’s phonics skills and bonus spaces for review or high-frequency words.
– Sentence Dictation: a sentence that includes target phonics skill words, previously taught phonics skill words and high-frequency words.
– Spelling Error Analysis: a sentence that includes target phonics skill words, previously taught phonics skill words and high-frequency words. Students must correct the mistakes and rewrite the corrected sentences.
💕 A Teacher Assessment Guide and Master Word List
You’ll get an answer key for each unit to make it extra easy for you to quickly check those assessments!
💕 A Family Letter for Each Unit
We know that word study looks a little different than traditional spelling that families may be accustomed to. This letter will help families understand the shift, inform them of the focus for the unit, and offer them ways to support their children at home.

1st Grade Spelling Words
Understanding 1st Grade Spelling Words
1st grade spelling is the level of spelling that is expected of students in the first grade of elementary school. It is the beginning of the journey towards building a strong vocabulary and spelling skills. At this grade level, students are typically introduced to basic spelling rules and patterns, such as short vowels, long vowels, and consonant blends.
What are Spelling Words for 1st Grade?
Spelling words are words that students are expected to learn how to spell correctly. These words can be categorized into different groups, such as sight words, phonetic words, and graded spelling word lists. Sight words are commonly used words that students should recognize by sight, such as “the,” “and,” and “is.” Phonetic words are words that follow specific spelling rules, such as “cat,” “hat,” and “bat.” Graded spelling word lists are lists of words that are organized by grade level and difficulty.’
Importance of Vocabulary in 1st Grade
In 1st grade, students are introduced to new vocabulary words every day. These words are not only important for reading and writing, but they also help children understand the world around them. By learning new words, children can better express their thoughts and ideas, and they can understand the thoughts and ideas of others.
To help 1st graders build their vocabulary skills, it is important to provide them with a variety of vocabulary words and activities. One effective way to do this is by using vocabulary lists. The Basic Spelling Vocabulary List, created by Steve Graham, Karen R. Harris, and Connie Loynachan, is a great resource for teachers and parents. This list contains 850 words that account for 80 percent of the words children use in their writing.
Here are some examples of 1st grade spelling words:
Phonics for 1st Grade Spelling Words
Short vowel words.
Short vowel words are an essential part of phonics and spelling for first-grade students. These words contain short vowel sounds and are often used in simple sentences. Here are some examples of short vowel words:
Long Vowel Words
Long vowel words are another important aspect of phonics and spelling for first-grade students. These words contain long vowel sounds and are often used in more complex sentences. Here are some examples of long vowel words:
Consonants and Blends
Consonants and blends are also crucial components of phonics and spelling for first-grade students. Consonants are sounds made by obstructing airflow, while blends are combinations of two or more consonant sounds. Here are some examples of consonants and blends:
CVC words are three-letter words that follow the pattern of consonant-vowel-consonant. These words are often used in simple sentences and are an important part of phonics and spelling for first-grade students. Here are some examples of CVC words:
Syllables are another important aspect of phonics and spelling for first-grade students. A syllable is a unit of sound that contains a vowel sound. Here are some examples of words with one, two, and three syllables:
Spelling Words List for 1st Grade

We start with Dolch and Fry sight word lists , which are crucial for early literacy. These words are commonly used in texts and may not follow standard phonetic patterns, making them essential for students to memorize.
Dolch Sight Words
Fry Sight Words
Weekly Spelling Themes
The first-grade spelling words program includes 32 weekly spelling lists, with each week containing 10 different spelling words. These weekly spelling lists are based on word families and include Dolch and Fry sight word lists, as well as phonetic word pattern lists (CVC, word families). The following are some examples of weekly spelling words:
- Week 1: cat, hat, sat, mat, rat, bat, pat, chat, flat, that
- Week 2: pin, win, bin, tin, fin, grin, spin, skin, twin, thin
- Week 3: red, bed, fed, led, wed, sled, shed, fled, bred, pled
Seasonal Word Lists
Throughout the year, we also incorporate seasonal words into our spelling lists. This approach helps connect our students’ learning with the world around them and the events they observe and celebrate.
Word Families and Compound Words
In first grade, students are introduced to the concept of word families. Word families are groups of words that have a similar pattern or structure. They are an essential part of learning to read and write as they help children recognize patterns in words and understand how they are formed. Here are some common word families for first-grade students:
Compound words are another important aspect of first-grade spelling. Compound words are formed by combining two or more words to create a new word with a different meaning. Here are some examples of compound words:
Learning compound words helps students understand the relationship between words and how they can be combined to create new words.
It’s important to note that some words can be both compound words and part of a word family. For example, the word “sunflower” is a compound word made up of “sun” and “flower,” but “flower” is also part of the -er word family.
Spelling Activities for 1st Grade
Interactive games.
We love to incorporate interactive games into our spelling routine. Online platforms offer exciting games that can turn spelling practice into an adventure. For instance, we might use a game where students pop balloons with the correct spelling, or we venture on virtual treasure hunts where each correct word leads them closer to the prize. These games keep our spelling sessions lively and enjoyable.
Hands-on Exercises
Hands-on exercises are perfect for kids who thrive on tactile experiences. We often create Spelling Word Building with our first graders using letter tiles or blocks. Another favorite is the “Spelling Garden” where each student plants a seed for every word they spell correctly, growing a beautiful garden of words on paper.
Spelling Word Building
- Letter tiles
- Letter blocks
Spelling Garden
- Planting seeds for correct words
- Growing a paper garden
Daily Spelling Practice
For daily spelling practice , consistency is key. We have daily tasks that our first graders dive into. Each day might include a new activity like filling in the blanks, unscrambling jumbled letters, or locating words in a word search. Regular exposure to these exercises helps cement the spellings in their minds.
- Fill in the blanks
- Unscramble jumbled letters
- Word search puzzles
Each spelling activity is a step toward our first graders becoming proficient and confident spellers. We believe in keeping the learning process engaging, varied, and filled with opportunities that cater to every type of learner.
