Hip Shake Fitness Tone N Twerk

Zumba fitness instructor Nicole Steen teaches these six empowering workouts, which are great for a variety of dance levels and especially fun for women — though, of course, people of all genders can enjoy them.

Tangoflex Revolutionary Flexibility Training

What to look for when shopping for fitness DVDs

✔️ A range of difficulty levels: Whether you're a beginner to fitness or you've been working out for a while, you'll want to find an exercise program that caters to a variety of experience levels. The best fitness DVDs will offer at least two different difficulty levels, as well as plenty of opportunities for modification, so that you can feel as confident as possible, no matter how much experience you have.

✔️ An assortment of routines: If you're investing in a fitness DVD, then chances are you plan on watching it more than once. For that reason, you'll want to make sure that your selection offers several different routines and exercises. That'll keep you feeling engaged and entertained rather than bored by too much monotony.

✔️ A knowledgable instructor: A fitness class is only ever as great as the instructor leading that class. Before purchasing a fitness DVD, make sure the instructor leading the workouts is certified, experienced, and knowledgable about what they're teaching — and make sure they seem like someone who'll keep you feeling motivate, too!

Are fitness DVDs effective?

This is an image

Just like with any workout, a fitness DVD can be incredibly effective if you're willing to put the work into it. As long as the routine isn't so challenging that you're discouraged or so easy that you're bored, you can get a fabulous workout from home if you commit, push yourself where you can, and follow your instructor.

How long should a fitness DVD workout be?

According to the CDC, you should be getting 30 minutes of moderate-intensity cardio activity at least five days per week (150 minutes per week) and at least 25 minutes of vigorous aerobic activity three days per week (75 minutes per week). Of course, because this isn't an ideal world, you may only have time to squeeze in a 10- or 15-minute workout a day. That's why it's best to choose tapes with a variety of class lengths, so you can do as much or as little as your schedule and body allow.

Which fitness DVDs are best for weight loss?

This is an image

Different exercises perform different functions. Yoga and Pilates are great for strengthening and toning, while cardio and high-intensity interval training (HIIT) are best for working up a sweat. If losing weight is your primary goal, then it's best to go with a DVD that focuses on metabolic weight training or low-impact HIIT cardio, though all of these exercise DVDs can help you get closer to your fitness goals.

What Makes Purchasing Workout DVDs Essential?

There are several compelling reasons to consider purchasing workout DVDs. From convenience to cost-effectiveness, these exercise routines offer a variety of benefits that may appeal to individuals looking to meet their fitness goals. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced fitness enthusiast, here are some key reasons to consider incorporating workout DVDs into your routine.

Convenience

Workout DVDs offer convenience for those who cannot attend the gym or fitness classes due to various reasons like lack of time, transportation issues, or difficulty in finding child care. With workout DVDs, we can exercise from the comfort and privacy of our own homes, at our own pace and schedule. This eliminates the need to dress up, pack a gym bag, and spend time traveling to and from the gym or fitness classes.

Furthermore, working out at home with a workout DVD provides a distraction-free environment, where we can focus solely on our exercise routine without being interrupted or distracted by other gym-goers. It also saves money on expensive gym memberships and allows us to tailor our workouts to our specific needs and preferences. With a variety of workout DVDs available, from yoga and dance to cardio and strength training, we can choose the ones that suit our fitness levels, goals, and interests, providing us with a convenient and effective way to stay fit and healthy.

Cost-effective

Purchasing workout DVDs is a cost-effective way to get in shape. Unlike gym memberships and personal trainers, workout DVDs are a one-time expense that can be used repeatedly without any additional costs. This is particularly beneficial for people who have a limited budget or cannot afford expensive fitness programs. Additionally, workout DVDs can be used at home, eliminating expenses associated with traveling to a gym or fitness class.

Moreover, workout DVDs offer a variety of workout options at a fraction of the cost. Purchasing a single fitness class can easily cost upwards of $20, while workout DVDs typically cost between $10-$20 and include multiple workouts. This means that people can choose from a range of workouts to target specific muscle groups and areas of the body without breaking the bank. In the long run, investing in workout DVDs can save people a lot of money while still providing the benefits of regular exercise.

Consistency

Consistency is one of the major reasons why people invest in workout DVDs. When we make a conscious decision to work out and achieve our fitness goals, we need to be consistent in our efforts. However, this can be challenging when we have busy schedules or external factors that limit our ability to visit the gym or attend fitness classes. With workout DVDs, we can ensure that we are staying consistent with our exercise routine irrespective of our other commitments.

Furthermore, workout DVDs provide a level of structure and control that is not always available in traditional workout settings. We can choose the specific type of workout that aligns with our fitness goals, and we can do it at our own pace. This helps us stay on track with our fitness routine and ensure that we are exercising regularly. Overall, consistency is key when it comes to achieving fitness goals, and workout DVDs can be a helpful tool for ensuring that we stay consistent in our efforts.

Customizable workouts

Customizable workouts are a crucial aspect of any effective fitness routine. Workout DVDs provide customizable workouts that cater to the different needs of individuals. For instance, individuals who are new to exercising may need a workout routine that is tailored to their fitness level. Similarly, individuals with specific fitness goals, such as weight loss or muscle gain, need specific workouts that focus on their preferred area of interest.

The customizable workouts offered by workout DVDs allow individuals to design workout routines that cater to their specific needs. They can adjust the intensity, duration, and type of workout to match their fitness level and preferences. Moreover, the versatility of workout DVDs means that individuals can incorporate different routines into their workouts to prevent boredom and improve results. Therefore, investing in a workout DVD with customizable workouts is an excellent way to achieve fitness goals, maintain interest in workouts and improve overall health and wellness.

Things to Consider when Choosing the Best Workout DVDs

To ensure an effective and safe workout routine from the comfort of your home, there are certain aspects to keep in mind when browsing through workout DVDs.

Fitness level

When buying workout DVDs, it is crucial to consider your fitness level for the simple reason that not all workouts are suitable for everyone. If you are a beginner with little or no experience, you may find some exercise routines too challenging or even dangerous. On the other hand, if you are an advanced fitness enthusiast, you may require a more intense workout to meet your needs. It is essential to choose workout DVDs that are designed for your fitness level to improve your overall health and avoid injuries.

Another reason to consider your fitness level before purchasing workout DVDs is to ensure that you get results that match your expectations. If you choose a routine that is too easy or not challenging enough, you may not achieve your desired fitness goals. Conversely, if you choose a workout that is too difficult, you may be discouraged and give up before seeing any results. Therefore, taking the time to determine your fitness level and selecting a suitable workout DVD is critical to success.

Workout preferences

When it comes to choosing workout DVDs, it’s important to consider your workout preferences. This is because different types of DVDs cater to different goals and fitness levels. For example, if you are looking for a high-intensity workout, then you would want to choose a DVD that focuses on interval training, such as HIIT or Tabata. On the other hand, if you prefer a more relaxed and low-impact workout, then you may want to choose a yoga or Pilates DVD. It’s important to understand your fitness goals and preferences before investing in a workout DVD to ensure that it is effective and enjoyable.

Considering your workout preferences before buying a workout DVD can also save you money. Investing in a DVD that doesn’t align with your interests or fitness level can be a waste of money. By taking the time to research and understand what type of workout you enjoy and what you want to achieve from it, you can make an informed decision when it comes to purchasing a DVD. This will help you get the most out of your workout routine and ensure that you stick with it in the long run.

DVD format compatibility

Before making a purchase for a workout DVD, it is important to ensure that the format of the DVD is compatible with your player. Compatibility issues may arise if the DVD format is not compatible with your DVD player, which means the disc will not play. Different DVD players support different formats, including DVD+R, DVD-R, and DVD-RW, among others. Therefore, compatibility must be considered to avoid wasting your money on a workout DVD that will not work with your DVD player.

Additionally, compatibility also pertains to the region code, which is the built-in restriction on discs to only play in certain geographic regions. For instance, a workout DVD purchased in the United States may only be compatible with Region 1 players, however, if you live in Europe (Region 2), it will not play. With this in mind, checking both the format and region code before purchasing a workout DVD will help guarantee that the disc will work with your DVD player and avoid potential frustration and lost money. Therefore, it is recommended to verify compatibility before selecting the workout DVD to purchase.

Instructor expertise

When it comes to buying workout DVDs, the expertise of the instructor is one of the most crucial factors to consider. An instructor with a solid background in fitness or a related field can give you proper guidance and help you avoid injuries. They also know how to create a workout that is challenging yet achievable, and can modify the exercises according to your fitness level. Having an experienced, knowledgeable instructor can make the difference between a safe and effective workout and one that causes more harm than good.

Furthermore, choosing a workout DVD with a reputable instructor can help you achieve your fitness goals faster. The right instructor can guide you towards proper form and technique, and motivate you to push beyond your limits. They can also provide varying levels of modifications for beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels allowing you to progress at your own pace. Overall, choosing a workout DVD with a skilled instructor can enhance your workout experience and help you achieve your fitness goals more efficiently.

Reviews and ratings

Reviews and ratings provide valuable insight into the effectiveness and quality of workout DVDs. They offer honest opinions from people who have already tried and tested the product, helping potential buyers make informed decisions. By considering reviews and ratings, buyers can avoid wasting money on ineffective or low-quality DVDs and invest in ones that are proven to deliver results.

Can workout DVDs be used by beginners?

Yes, workout DVDs can be used by beginners. In fact, many workout DVDs are designed specifically for beginners and offer modifications for different fitness levels. These DVDs may include a range of exercises such as stretching, yoga, or strength training that can help beginners build their strength and endurance. Additionally, following along with a workout DVD can provide a structured workout routine and motivation for beginners who may not know where to start with their fitness journey.

It is important for beginners to listen to their bodies and take breaks when necessary. It is also recommended to consult with a healthcare professional before starting any new exercise program. With proper guidance and caution, workout DVDs can provide a convenient and effective way for beginners to start exercising in the comfort of their own home.

Are workout DVDs effective in weight loss?

Workout DVDs can be effective in weight loss if they are used consistently and in conjunction with proper nutrition. They provide a convenient way to exercise in the comfort of one’s own home and can offer a structured workout plan. Additionally, many DVDs offer a variety of workouts, such as cardio, strength training, and yoga, which can help prevent boredom and keep the body challenged. However, it is important to note that results may vary depending on individual factors such as starting weight and fitness level.

It’s important to note also that incorporating variety and mixing up workout routines could help to enhance the effectiveness of workout DVDs in weight loss. Sticking to the same routine over time could lead to a plateau effect where the body no longer responds to the workout as effectively, thus slowing down weight loss progress. It’s also important to stay motivated and committed to the workout plan to achieve maximum results.

Do workout DVDs require any special equipment?

It depends on the type of workout DVD. Some are designed to be done without any equipment, using only bodyweight exercises. Others may require basic equipment such as dumbbells, resistance bands, or a yoga mat. In some cases, more specialized equipment such as a stability ball, kettlebells, or a step platform may be used. The equipment required for a specific workout DVD should be listed on the packaging or in the accompanying materials.

Can workout DVDs be used as a replacement for going to the gym?

Yes, workout DVDs can be used as a replacement for going to the gym as they provide a structured workout routine in the comfort of one’s own home. However, they may not provide access to equipment or the same level of motivation and social interaction as going to the gym. Ultimately, the effectiveness of workout DVDs as a replacement for the gym depends on individual preferences and goals.

You can search the catalog and filter classes using various parameters, including duration, instructor, difficulty level, and type of music. Workouts range from five minutes to over an hour, which means you will still have options to exercise on your busiest days. However, you can’t do any keyword searches or filter the catalog by equipment required, which means you must read each class description to find out if you need any gear for it.

The app is available on numerous devices including iOS, Android, Apple TV, Fire TV, and on the website. Be mindful that there are more Android users complaining about glitches in the app than in any other platform.

Peloton’s most basic membership costs $13 per month and lets one person access thousands of on-demand and live classes on the app. A $24 per month guide membership, available to those who buy the $295 Peloton guide, grants you the same benefits as the basic app membership, plus movement tracking features and the ability to set up profiles for up to five people.

If you own Peloton equipment, go for the all-access membership, which will run you $44 per month. This tier includes all previous features, plus it lets you create profiles for all members of your household (up to 20 users), participate in leaderboard competitions and special challenges, and access special content.

FitOn is the brainchild of husband-and-wife duo Lindsay and Russell Cook. Founded in 2018, the app offers free and paid membership tiers. The service boasts hundreds of on-demand workouts at various fitness levels that range anywhere from five minutes to an hour. There are over 40 different trainers to choose from, including celebrities like actress Gabrielle Union and stylist JVN. In 2022, the company also introduced a feature dubbed “courses,” which are trainer-led, four-week classes available for a $30 fee.

One unique aspect that makes FitOn stand out from the pack is its social component. Users can join different communities such as Gain Muscle, Pilates Party, and Meal Preppers to find, connect, and share their fitness journey with other users. There is also an advice tab filled with trainer tips and articles about wellness, fitness, and nutrition.

Upgrading to the Pro version for $99 a year will get you access to tailored programs, offline workouts, personalized meal plans and recipes, and the ability to host a workout video party with your friends. The workout video parties are exactly what they sound like: You start a workout and simultaneously video call your friends so you can all do it together. Although relatively new, FitOn is often ranked in the top 100 health and fitness apps in both the Apple App Store and the Google Play Store.

Best for Busy Schedules : Nike Training Club

  • Price: Free
  • Platforms: iOS, Android

When you only have a few minutes to spare, Nike Training Club is there to lend a hand. Its video library has a special “short workouts” shortcut that boasts over 200 different workout videos for free.

Has over 200 workouts under 22 minutes long

Easy-to-sort video library

Only offers strength, cardio, and mobility exercises

No way to track your progress

Launched in 2009, Nike Training Club has been around for a while. It used to require a premium membership for some of its features, but during the pandemic, Nike decided to make its app completely free. The no-frills app contains over 500 workout videos covering strength training, cardio, mobility, and yoga exercises. Nearly half of its workouts last under 22 minutes, making it one of the best options for busy people to get moving. Most workouts don’t require any equipment at all.

Nike Training Club, or NTC for short, also offers 21 different goal-specific programs that last anywhere from one week to one year. While the app keeps track of which exercises you’ve done, and you can add non-app workouts to your history as well, it doesn’t really let you track progress in a meaningful way. You can’t log your weight, your photo progressions, or how much weight you’ve lifted. But if you’re looking for a no-frills app with a ton of good, trainer-led content available for free, Nike’s got your back.

The app is free and does not have a premium or paid version.

Best for Yoga : Alo Moves

  • Price: $20/month or $200/year
  • Platforms: iOS, web, Apple TV

With more than 1,000 on-demand workout videos from 80 certified instructors, Alo Moves provides a great and affordable option to start or continue your yoga journey.

14-day free trial

Over 1,000 on-demand yoga videos

Over 80 instructors to choose from

Android app is no longer supported

Live classes currently unavailable

Finding instructors you enjoy may be difficult

Alo Moves is part of clothing company Alo Yoga, which is headquartered in Los Angeles. The app has a big focus on yoga, but it also offers barre, Pilates, meditation, and cardio classes. The on-demand library contains more than 1,000 yoga-specific videos, ranging anywhere from five to 150 minutes in duration, and encompasses a variety of styles including vinyasa (high endurance), Ashtanga (strength training), and hatha (relaxing and meditative) yoga. It has one of the largest workout libraries in this roundup.

This at-home gym subscription also has over 80 different trainers so you can browse the content until you find an instructor that matches your energy. Keep in mind, however, that the task may be a little difficult given that there are no filters to narrow down instructor specialty or any user reviews of the workouts. On the plus side, most workout videos only require a yoga mat and a couple of blocks. On the downside, the company used to host live classes but these are not currently supported on the app.

Alo Moves costs $20 per month or $200 per year, which comes out to less than $4 a week for an annual subscription. There are often deep discounts offered on the membership, sometimes as much as 50%, so keep an eye out for when they pop up.

Best for HIIT : Sweat

  • Price: $20/month or $120/year
  • Platforms: iOS, Android, web

Kayla Itsines, the queen of high-intensity interval training, offers workouts tailored to your fitness level and equipment for less than three dollars a week (if you choose a yearly subscription).

Seven-day free trial

Workouts tailored to the equipment you have available

Under $3 a week for an annual subscription

You can’t download workouts for offline use

No way to add food allergy for the meal plans

No live classes

Sweat features several high-intensity interval training (HIIT) programs, as well as strength training, Pilates, and yoga classes. The app was co-founded in 2015 by Australian personal trainer Kayla Itsines, who jumped to fame thanks to her wildly successful BBG program, an acronym that stands for Bikini Body Guides. The workouts and programs in the Sweat app are led by Itsines herself and a dozen or so other certified trainers.

Sweat introduced at-home and zero equipment programs to ensure you can work out from anywhere at any time, but it also has full equipment versions better suited for a gym visit. The HIIT programs last anywhere from four to 40-plus weeks, and you can also add on-demand workouts as you see fit. The content is full of challenging yet achievable exercises for any fitness level.

A cool feature is that the app lets you track how much weight you’re lifting, so you can measure your progress, and it also offers a workout planner and a weekly meal plan with recipes. As an added bonus, you can join the Sweat community, which is a discussion forum filled with like-minded users. Unfortunately, there are no live classes and you can’t download workouts for offline use.

You can sign up for Sweat with a $20 monthly membership or a $120 annual membership.

Best for CrossFit : CrossFit Linchpin’s Private Track on BTWB

  • Price: $18/month or $90/6 months

CrossFit Linchpin’s Private Track is an affordable, structured program from a certified CrossFit coach. It offers five different modalities, making it suitable for users at any fitness level, and it even has a no-equipment option.

Five different variations to fit your desired fitness level

Structured program

Must use a third party for tech support

Credit card required for free trial

Have to cancel subscription on third party website

CrossFit Linchpin’s Private Track was created by former Navy SEAL Pat Sherwood, who used to work at CrossFit—the company—programming events for its CrossFit Games, among other things. You should know that Linchpin doesn’t have its own app. You have to access it through the Beyond the Whiteboard app. If you subscribe to Linchpin’s program, however, you will automatically get a subscription to the BTWB app.

The best thing about Linchpin’s workout of the day (WOD) is that it comes with five different variations, depending on your fitness level and what equipment you have available, which makes the benefits of CrossFit accessible to a wide audience. You have an Rx version, or recommended workout of the day.  Other options include a wild card option, a scaled version, a limited-equipment option that uses dumbbells, and a no-equipment option that only requires your own body weight. In addition to the WOD, you also get daily warm-up and cool-down videos, demo videos showing you the proper form to do the exercises, and an optional accessory workout video for the days you want to push yourself a little harder.

The subscription unlocks all BTWB features as well, letting you track your progress and stack up against others in a leaderboard competition. Additionally, you get access to a private Facebook group for the Linchpin community. You can test the service with a 30-day free trial.

CrossFit Linchpin offers two different pricing tiers: an $18 month-to-month subscription and a $90 six-month subscription, which lowers the monthly cost to $15.

Best for Pilates : Pilates Anytime

  • Price: $22/month or $240/year
  • Platforms: iOS, Android, web, Roku, Apple TV

Pilates Anytime offers over 3,700 on-demand workout videos from more than 200 instructors with different backgrounds and teaching styles. This all but guarantees there’s something for everyone, no matter their fitness level and access to equipment.

More than 200 instructors with a variety of backgrounds and teaching styles

Can’t cast videos to your TV from the app

Content can be a little difficult to navigate

May need Pilates equipment to get the most out of your subscription

If you’re looking for an at-home gym subscription with a special focus on Pilates, you don’t need to look any further than Pilates Anytime . The service offers over 3,700 on-demand classes from more than 200 certified instructors, all for less than $5 a week when purchased on an annual basis. The broadness of its library and trainers means there’s a good chance you will find a teacher that matches your learning style and workouts that require whatever Pilates equipment you have on hand.

One thing to keep in mind is that while Pilates Anytime has classical Pilates classes, which closely follow Joseph Pilates’s teachings, a lot of its content is focused on contemporary Pilates, a slightly different style that incorporates some elements of physical therapy and exercise variations. There are no live classes, but new ones are added every week. You can narrow down the massive library with a series of filters including Pilates apparatus, props, teachers, pace, duration, and muscle focus. The average class can last anywhere from five to 60 minutes, and you can sign up for a two-week free trial.

There are two membership tiers: a monthly membership for $22, and an annual membership for $240, which saves you $24.

Best for Barre : Barre3

  • Price: $29/month, $25/3 months, or $240/year
  • Platforms: iOS, web, Android, Samsung TV

Barre3 creates full-body workouts mixing elements of yoga, Pilates, ballet, and cardio to deliver well-rounded programs for any fitness level. Instructors also offer various modifications depending on the equipment you have on hand.

Doesn’t require a ballet barre

No live classes

App is not as intuitive as the website version

Difficult to track progress

Barre is a workout that combines the elegance and discipline of ballet with the breathwork and mindfulness of yoga and the full body-burn of Pilates. Barre3 offers all of that, plus it sprinkles in a little bit of cardio and strength training into its workouts to make them stand out from all the rest. In its online app, you will find classes featuring several barre modes focusing on different muscle groups and fitness styles. You are encouraged to try them out to find out which style is better suited to your goals.

The app has more than 500 different workouts, ranging in length from 10 to 60 minutes. New classes are added weekly, and the app also provides a weekly plan that includes newly released and classic classes to support your at-home gym experience. You don’t need too much equipment other than a yoga mat, core ball, and some handheld weights for most of the workouts. If there's a case where you need more than that, the instructor will provide several modifications to accommodate you. You can also download your favorite workouts for offline use.

A monthly subscription will run you $29 for unlimited access, a three-month subscription runs $25 per month, or you could get the cost down to $20 per month when you choose an annual subscription priced at $240.

Best for Kickboxing : FightCamp

  • Price: Free, $39/month, or $421/year

You will need a punching bag

FightCamp , which launched in 2016, offers more than 600 at-home boxing and kickboxing workouts. The on-demand classes are suitable for people at any fitness level, and range in duration from 10 minutes to one hour. If you want to get a better sense of your performance, you will need to buy the company’s trackers ($99) to monitor and record your punches and then pair them with your app. This will also allow you to compare your performance to other FightCamp users.

At $39 per month or $421 for an annual membership, this service is the most expensive one featured in this roundup. However, starting in 2022, the company decided to make a portion of its classes free to the public. This includes about 50 boxing and kickboxing classes, and a hundred or so more bodyweight exercises. There are minimal equipment requirements involved, but because we are talking about boxing and kickboxing, you will eventually need to get a punching bag to complete all the workouts. FightCamp sells punching bags, gloves, and trackers on its website. Full access to the classes requires purchasing at least the trackers, and a paid membership tier.

FightCamp offers a free version with limited access to its on-demand classes. For full access, you will need to purchase either a monthly subscription for $39, or a yearly subscription for $421, plus a set of the company’s trackers, which cost $99.

Best for Variety : Aaptiv

  • Price: $15/month or $100/year

Aaptiv has one of the largest on-demand workout video libraries around. All the classes are led by certified trainers, and it is also one of the most affordable services we’ve seen.

Over 6,000 workouts in variety of disciplines

You can filter workouts by equipment

Focused on audio workouts, which may not be suitable to all learning styles

Limited videos and visual cues

Some classes may disappear without prior warning

Whether you want to go for a run or do some yoga, Pilates, or strength training, Aaptiv has a class and a trainer ready to lead the way and help you excel in your performance. Its content library has over 6,000 classes on-demand, and the company adds over 30 new classes every week. The app boasts a broad variety of workouts across 10 different categories including cycling, meditation, and treadmill routines.

Unlike other fitness services, Aaptiv focuses mostly on audio-only workouts, with upbeat background music and high-spirited trainers coaching your every move. This means that there are not as many videos or visual cues available in the app, which may put off visual learners from using the service.

In addition to normal search filters, you can filter classes by equipment, so it’s easy to find a routine that works with what you’ve got on hand. There are quick 10-minute workouts and hour-long sessions available as well, all offered in varying degrees of difficulty to suit your fitness level. If you’re interested, you can get a seven-day free trial on the company’s website.

A monthly subscription to Aaptiv costs $15. Annual membership costs $100, which decreases your monthly price to about $8.

When it comes to at-home gym subscriptions, Peloton offers the best value. Not only does it come with an extensive on-demand video library, featuring classes in a number of different disciplines, but it also boasts live classes with world-famous Peloton instructors. Moreover, it lets you access its content without forcing you to buy its equipment, which is really important for frugal households.

If you’ve decided you want to build your own home gym but cycling isn’t really your thing, you may want to take a look at CrossFit Linchpin , which offers a range of workout modifications to fit every fitness level and whatever equipment you have available. If you’re looking for the most inexpensive options that still deliver high-quality workouts, take a look at Nike Training Club and FitOn .

Guide to Choosing the Best At-Home Gym Subscriptions

Are at-home gym subscriptions worth it.

Absolutely. For starters, exercise is a necessary and vital component of every healthy lifestyle, so you should always strive to stay fit and active in your daily life. There are some at-home gym subscriptions that offer workouts that make you sweat and work harder than any other routine you might do at a regular gym. There are also a number of other benefits, including affordability, given that some at-home gym subscriptions are cheaper than regular gyms. Additionally, you don't have to leave your home to exercise, which may come in handy for parents or in situations where the weather is bad.

There is also a lot more flexibility with an at-home gym subscription, in terms of choosing when and where to fit in a workout. The best part is that you get the chance to work with talented certified trainers who can coach you on your fitness journey for a fraction of what a one-on-one session would cost.

What Should I Look for in an At-Home Gym Subscription?

Although it was already really popular, the at-home gym subscription market has exploded in recent years. That means you’ve probably been bombarded by tons of ads from programs out there with various promises and specials. Choosing the best subscription to fit your needs and your goals should be easy if you know what you’re looking for. Here are a few important factors to consider in your search.

  • Pricing: Is it an all-inclusive monthly or yearly fee? Will you get unfettered access to all the app’s content by paying a fixed monthly or yearly price, or do you have to pay per session or course? The latter can add up, depending on your usage. Most importantly: make sure that the price meets your budget , and keep an eye out for discounts and promos.
  • Content: Spend some time browsing to gauge how much content is available on the service you’re considering. You want to ensure it has at least a few hundred on-demand workout videos to choose from and that the company regularly updates its content. Another thing to look for is, does it offer live classes, and is that something you would pay a premium for?
  • Platforms: Most services will have an Android and iOS app, but that is not always the case. Make sure you check which platforms are supported before you invest in a subscription. If you have a Roku or any other type of smart TV, you may also want to check if the service is supported on these devices.
  • Equipment requirements: Do you own more equipment than dumbbells and a yoga mat? If not, you want to make sure the service you are considering has plenty of options for limited or no-equipment workouts. If you’re considering a niche subscription service, like one focused on boxing, then make sure you have (or can purchase) the equipment necessary to do the exercises before signing up.
  • Free trials: Always go for the companies that offer free trials; seven days to two weeks is fairly typical, but the longer, the better. A free trial allows you to test the service and ensure you like it before spending your hard-earned dollars on something you will only use once.
  • Variety of workouts: If you’re someone that gets bored easily doing the same type of workouts over and over again, then you need to make sure the service you’re eyeing has enough variety to keep you motivated and engaged.
  • Coaches and trainers: Check the service to see how many different trainers they have on staff. You want to make sure you have options and experience different teaching styles. Most services have coaches’ bios on their websites, so you can see if there’s one or more you would prefer.

Frequently Asked Questions

What workouts do at-home gym subscriptions offer.

The great thing about at-home gym subscriptions is that many of them offer very niche products. If you’re interested in taking CrossFit, barre, or yoga classes, chances are you can find a specific program that meets those needs. There are other broader at-home gym subscriptions that include a range of exercises from stretching and yoga to bodyweight workouts (think planks, burpees, and push-ups), and strength training.

Do You Need Equipment for At-Home Gym Subscriptions?

It depends on what you choose. Many at-home gym subscriptions offer zero-equipment programs and workouts, and in some cases, limited equipment, like a pair of dumbbells and a mat, is enough to get through a program. We recommend you take a look at the equipment requirements listed in the app or workout program you want to begin before making any financial commitments.

Can Home Workouts Replace the Gym?

With consistency and effort, home workouts can be just as effective as the gym. One way to get a great workout at home is to subscribe to an at-home gym subscription. Apps like Peloton and Aaptiv offer a large library of at-home workouts that can help you get all the cardio, resistance, and weight training exercise that you need from the comfort of home.

We evaluated more than 40 companies offering at-home gym subscriptions. The program features we reviewed included price, diversity of workouts, user reviews, variety of instructors and availability, workout equipment needed, and ease of platform use. Companies offering free trials and consumer-friendly cancellation policies often came out on top. We also gave preference to those that promoted inclusivity and body positivity.

8. Best Seated: Simple Seated Chair Exercises for Seniors

home workout dvd

Simple Seated Chair Exercises for Seniors

As you get older, the body's range of motion and flexibility can become more limited , which increases risk of joint pain, stiffness and injury. One of the best ways to combat that? Exercise.

"Those who feel restricted in mobility or have limited balance still benefit from regular exercise to help with daily function ," says Malek. Finding workouts that work for your body as you age is important for gaining strength, range of motion and use. It will also help you maintain a healthy weight, protect your heart health and lower your risk of health conditions like osteoporosis (low bone density).

" Chair exercises are a safe option to use as part of a healthy routine," says Malek, who recommends this workout DVD for people over 50 , in particular, as well as beginners of any age. This program incorporates cardio, strength work (use of light weights for seated exercises) and stretching, plus warm-ups and cooldowns.

9. Best for Barre: Suzanne Bowen: BarreAmped Boot Camp

home workout dvd

Suzanne Bowen: BarreAmped Boot Camp

This DVD blends barre with a boot camp.

If you love barre, or are simply into a good sweaty challenge "boot camp" style, this workout DVD is for you. It mixes low-impact cardio work with weight training and barre technique for a fun fusion that'll get your muscles "shaking" fast. Trust us, you'll feel (and see) them working overtime.

"By adding a boot-camp feel, you can raise your heart rate a bit more and add in weight training to complement the concepts of barre," says Malek.

4 Things to Look for in Workout DVDs for Beginners

1. beginner-friendly exercises.

Malek says that it's best to look for a DVD that starts off with the basics. "This is important as you get to know the exercises used, the speed and philosophy of the program and your ability to safely participate in it," she explains. It should also specifically say that the program is for beginners.

A workout video that is fit for beginners will have a good variety of workouts to keep things fun and interesting so that you're motivated to keep going. Monotony can get boring for anyone, but beginners are especially at risk of getting bored or burned out if they are still developing their relationship with fitness and building up confidence.

"You may also want to find ones with options for different muscle groups or body regions, such as lower body, core and shoulders," Malek says. This way, you can break up your workouts into different days if you'd prefer that over doing total-body workouts every time. Maybe you don't know yet how you want to organize your workouts — picking a DVD with options will help you explore what you like best.

3. Opportunities to Progress

While you want a beginner DVD to be suited for beginners, it's also really nice to have something that can progress with you once you've mastered the basics.

Of course, it's important to use your best judgment when going through different workouts and challenges, especially as you begin to make real progress and can tackle more challenging workouts. "Motivation to complete a program may be high, but sometimes this comes at the cost of sacrificing technique and could lead to injury if done repetitively," Malek cautions.

So, make sure you're not overworking yourself if you're not quite there yet, and slow back down if you can't keep up quite yet. The beauty of a DVD is that you can pause it, rewind it and try it over and over again until you totally nail the workout.

4. An Instructor You Like

Make sure you "vibe" with the class culture and the instructor's style. If you find that you just don't enjoy how they explain things or even their energy or voice, that's OK. No need to be rude about it, but maybe that's not the video for you. There are so many options out there, it's not worth wasting your time doing classes you don't enjoy

"The goal is to do something exciting and good for your body and health, not to make you feel bad about it," Malek says.

At Prevention , we've been working our DVD players—and our bodies—overtime to screen more than 40 new releases and classic workouts to find the all‑time best ones to help you lose weight, get toned, boost your energy, or simply get started.

3. Fit Steps – Dance Yourself Fit: £9.99, amazon.co.uk

Strictly Come Dancing professionals Natalie Lowe and Ian Waite pack the best of the BBC One ballroom dance show into ten easy-to-learn routines. Lose weight while you waltz as the duo takes you through dances suitable for a range of fitness levels.

4. Older, Wiser and Wonderful: £10.05, amazon.co.uk

7. Yoga for Weight Loss with Roxy Shahidi: £10, amazon.co.uk

Opt for this if you want a slower- paced routine which still burns fat. Emmerdale star Roxy Shahidi combines sun salutations, breathing exercises and a range of classic poses, from Chaturanga to Cobra. Build your core, release muscle tension and shift unwanted pounds with this relaxing workout.

1. Beachbody P90X: Home Fitness Workout

Price: £90.00.

the best fitness dvd

This isn’t a home fitness DVD to be taken lightly. It’s designed for people who are serious about every area of fitness and want to make big, positive changes to their life. P90X is a gargantuan programme, with 12 different workouts, a three-phase nutrition plan, and personal trainer in the form of Tony Horton to keep you motivated every step of the way.

Most of the top fitness DVDs have an area of specialisation, be that weight loss, toning, or muscle growth, but Beachbody P90X is multifaceted and covers every area imaginable. It’s also brilliant for increasing flexibility, strength, tone - you name it, this exercise programme covers it.

If you are in need of instant hydration after a tough workout like the Beachbody P90X, be sure to check out OriGym's list of the best hydration tablets on the market for more information on products that can help you out.

The workouts target every area of the body and are used by everyone from professional gymnasts to weight lifters and martial artists. We can’t stress enough how varied this programme is. This is a deliberate choice, as the Muscle Confusion technique constantly introduces new exercises to stop your body plateauing.

Beginners are well catered for, and Tony explains every movement (complete with modified versions for novices) at the start of a workout. The fitness DVD for beginners promises to get you in shape in just 90 days. To back this up, P90X offers an amazing money-back guarantee: if the programme doesn’t have you ripped in that time frame, then you’ll get your money back.

This is a bold claim, but with a 4.4/5 star rating on Amazon from a staggering 2,078 ratings, not only is this the best-rated workout DVD currently available, but we think it's the best full stop.

With over 3.6 million users, 1.2 million videos posted on youtube and a glittering array of endorsements from professional athletes, there is no better place to start with one of the best at-home fitness DVDs.

2. Joe Wicks- The Body Coach Workout

Price: £4.71.

best fitness dvd for beginners

Joe Wicks has become a household name in fitness, so it’s no surprise that his first, and still the best fitness DVD for beginners has to make it onto the list. This DVD is very much a product of his incredibly successful YouTube channel, which has helped people across the world of all ages and skillsets. It’s accessible, it’s fun, and it will make a real difference in your life.

You don’t need any special equipment or even a large space, so this fitness DVD for beginners is perfect. When you load the disc you’ll find:

  • 1 x warm-up routine
  • 2 x 15-minute workout
  • 2 x 20-minute workout
  • 2 x 25-minute workout
  • 1 x 30-minute workout
  • 1 x cool-down routine
  • Nutritional advice

We loved being able to fit the shorter workouts around our schedule and anyone looking for the best home fitness DVD will be more than happy with what’s on offer here.

There are also seven levels of higher intensity workouts, perfect if you’re on the hunt for HIIT fitness DVD’s and want to push yourself a little harder.

Joe is friendly and encouraging at all times, and he feels more like a friend than a personal trainer. His demeanour is much more welcoming than some of the other more aggressive coaches who often make an appearance on cheap fitness DVDs. With this product, you'll never feel out of your depth or alienated from the world of fitness!

3. Davina: Toned in 10

Price: £3.00.

boxing fitness dvd

Davina McCall is a big name in the world of celebrity fitness DVDs, with an extensive back catalogue and plenty of programmes to her name. We’ve chosen Toned in 10 because we enjoyed its structured approach, but also it offers something a little different and has a higher intensity than some of her earlier offerings.

The DVD comprises 10 different sections, each containing a different type of workout:

  • Strength and resist
  • Flex and flow
  • Tone and define

As you can see, there’s a workout for everyone and every part of the body. The aim is to get toned using at least one of the sections per day and of course, you can mix and match to determine your own fitness programme making it a contender for the best fitness DVD for weight loss in the UK.

We enjoyed this level of customisation, which made us feel like we were in total control of our fitness. If you really wanted to challenge yourself, take a look at our  full-body kettlebell workout for any fitness level  that you can perform from the comfort of your own home!

These workouts are somewhat different, as they’re based on ballet/barre type exercise. The intensity is high, more so than on some of Davina’s earlier DVDs, and even the warm-up will have you sweating. Throw in elements of boxercise and plenty of dancing, and you’ve got an incredibly varied boxing fitness DVD. It’s never a boring collection of exercises and you’ll have fun each time you play the DVD.

Davina is a trusted name, and we’re pleased to see her add something new to her collection. This is certainly one of the best selling fitness DVDs that UK audiences can get their hands on, especially if they're searching for a collection of varied and interesting exercises.

4. Strong by Zumba Fitness DVD

Price: £6.77.

best ballet fitness dvd

Make no mistake, despite its music and synchronised movements, Zumba fitness DVDs can be tough. It includes a 60 minute, high-intensity workout, and a 20-minute bonus workout, which will have you sweating hard and shedding calories.

Studies have shown that this Zumba based routine doubles caloric burn post-workout. Couple that with the sheer intensity of the workouts themselves, you've got the best fitness DVD to lose weight fast and boost your conditioning.

If you're not familiar with Zumba, it's a high-intensity workout where each of your movements is synchronised to the beat of the music, encouraging you to push harder. The exercises are varied and include movements like squats, planks and burpees, all designed to give you a full-body, intense workout.

We love the impact of this Zumba fitness DVD. You’ll be working on your whole body at once, burning calories as you tone your muscles. Since this is at heart a bodyweight workout, you won’t need any equipment apart from yourself. We actually offer a CPD in Body Weight Training , incase you're interested in learning more on this topic.

Better still, anybody looking to strengthen their core will be delighted to find a whole quadrant of the programme dedicated solely to core engagement. This is a massive plus since the core is so vital to nearly all fitness programmes. If you want to know about your core in further detail, we have written an article on how to engage your core to help you.

The Zumba instructor is great at keeping you up to pace, and telling you about your next moves long before you have to make them, so you’ll always feel prepared. If you can handle the intensity, you won’t find many top fitness DVDs for looking after your all-round health.

Gain a more thorough understanding of the industry by exploring information on its top-earning fitness positions .

5. Insanity Max 30 Base Kit Strength and Cardio Workouts

Price: £40.99.

best fitness dvd

Insanity has a somewhat fearsome reputation which definitely proceeds it, but that’s not to say that the workouts aren’t suitable for everyone. This is probably one of the most intense workout DVD sets on the list. You get several cheap fitness DVDs, yet it’s impossible to argue with the results that this workout promises.

With Insanity, high intensity is the name of the game. Routines only last 30 minutes, but during that time you will have to push incredibly hard. The exercises are based around strength and cardio, with the aim of maxing out both. You get 12 workouts spread across 10 DVDs, as well as a nutrition guide, a wall calendar to keep track of your progress, and a cooking guide.

Make no mistake, this is one of the HIIT fitness DVDs that you do not want to miss out on. If you can find the willpower you’re effectively guaranteed results. It promises the “craziest” thirty minutes of your life, and asks not whether you can complete the exercise, but where your limits lie.

Anybody searching for convenient workout routines will be pleased to hear that none of the exercises last more than 30 minutes. You can easily fit the fitness training DVDs into your life, but the programme does require a degree of commitment if only to live with the intensity day in day out.

Fortunately, Shaun T is probably the most inspirational and motivating fitness coach you’ll find, and with him by your side, you’ll be amazed at the results you can achieve, and how far you can push yourself. Without a doubt, Insanity is one of the best fitness DVDs currently available.

6. Billy Blanks' Tae Bo: The Ultimate Collection

Price: £4.01.

best fitness dvd to lose weight fast

Released in 2004, this certainly isn't one of the latest fitness DVDs, but it really has stood the test of time as it stands out as a programme that offers something a little bit different. Tae Bo was devised in the 1990s and fuses martial arts with fitness. It takes moves from disciplines like boxing and Taekwondo and incorporates them into pure workouts.

The aim is to burn calories and to do so at a high intensity that the individual can manage. Tae Bo is known to be a highly effective cardiovascular form of exercise, and the variety of movements on offer are enough to hold your interest through a lot of workouts. This collection offers 4 fitness training DVDs, each with a different set of routines:

  • Abs and glutes

This means that you can choose an individual area to work on, or concentrate on your whole body. Better still, Tae Bo has been shown to burn more calories than a traditional workout, making this arguably one of the best fitness DVDs you can buy. You’ll be putting a lot of work into your abdominal area, so if you’re looking for a DVD with a difference, then Tae Bo might very well be for you.

Due to the nature of Tae Bo, this is a very fun beginners fitness DVD. By practising martial arts techniques you’ll be doing exercises not commonly included in other products. We loved the upbeat music and cheerful vibes of the videos. It’s high intensity, but the actions are so varied and original that you’ll quickly forget about the strain.

Deepen your understanding of the industry by reading about its highest-paying employment options in fitness .

Our favourite feature of this programme is the 4 different workout levels, so you can scale your workouts up and down depending on your skillset and aims. We absolutely loved the simplicity of the techniques. You won’t need any equipment to get started, and there aren’t even any jumps. Instead, you get yoga/pilates moves scaled up and performed at a fairly fast pace. The aim is to burn fat and tone your muscles, but we think you'll just enjoy the exercises in their own right, and want to keep coming back for more.

Everything is kept blissfully simple. Chalene explains all the moves and there are none of the more complex poses which yoga is sometimes renowned for. Better still, since the programme relies on carefully synchronised movements, you’ll be using your own bodyweight to actually lose weight!

This is a great “catch-all” programme that we would recommend to anybody looking for a low impact but highly effective exercise routine. You’ll be able to take care of your strength, cardio, and flexibility in one place. This type of product will be the ideal post-pregnancy fitness DVD if you want to get back into fitness.

9. Dance That Walk - Dance Fitness DVD For Beginners

Price: £10.95.

pregnancy fitness dvd

Dance That Walk is based around an incredibly simple, highly-effective idea. Most people don’t get the required number of steps per day, but by adding music and fun routines, anybody can get their step count up to a reasonable level. It’s a fantastic way to boost your overall fitness, health and wellbeing, and perfect for anybody looking for a less punishing workout, yet it's still one of the best fitness DVDs in the UK that money can buy.

The routines are fairly low intensity, and the emphasis is on inclusivity: these workouts are suitable for everybody, even the most inexperienced beginner. The dance fitness DVD consists of several circuits and these are divided into 4 x 5-minute rounds that alternate cardio and toning. Every exercise features three trainers performing at different levels of difficulty, so you can choose to follow whoever suits you.

Dance That Walk is certainly the best fitness DVD workout for anybody recovering from an injury who wants something low impact to keep their fitness up. We enjoyed the all-encompassing approach to exercise, with individual routines designed to sculpt your back, legs, thighs and shoulders.

There’s no floor work and elderly people who want to maintain their fitness without risking their body will likely find that this will work for them. A fitness and dance DVD can sometimes seem to alienate or even a little daunting, but that isn’t the case here. Anybody will benefit from the low impact, big fun routines on offer so this makes it the best fitness DVD for losing weight.

With 10 Minute Solution: Ultimate Bootcamp, we might have just found the answer. It’s a 10-minute workout DVD that promises to put every part of your body through its paces and deliver amazing results with minimal time compromise.

No matter how jammed your schedule, if you can find just 10 minutes in your day you can make positive, healthy changes with the help of 10 Minute Solution. The HIIT Fitness DVDs include five different boot camps, each designed to work on a different element:

  • Fat fighting skills and drills - high cardio to burn fat

Since these bootcamps only take 10 minutes, you can effectively customise your daily workout around areas you want to improve. With the exception of ab attack, where weights are required, the rest of the workouts don’t need any special equipment or a particularly large space. The routines are fast-paced though, and intensity is high to maximise gains.

This combination of variety and sheer convenience makes 10 Minute Solution easily the best fitness DVD for beginners who are tight for time.

11. Jillian Michaels Lift & Shred

Price: £5.93.

It’s surprisingly difficult to find the best fitness DVD for beginners that focusses primarily on lifting, but Jillian Michaels certainly fits the bill. This is a somewhat back to basics approach to building a strong physique, so it's gimmick-free and reliant on hard work. If you put in the effort, the results will be incredible.

The DVD includes two thirty-minute workouts with weights, but the exercises are scaleable. There’s no need to plunge in at the deep end and the stronger you become, the higher you can scale the workouts, using heavier weights at a higher intensity. It’s a great way in for people who want to experiment with weights but aren’t sure how it works.

Jillian’s method promises to boost your metabolism via weight training, which in turn leads to an increase in fat burn and a leaner, more contoured physique. There’s an emphasis on building muscle, making this perfect for anybody searching for a ripped workout DVD that will really shape their body.

This is the first fitness DVD in the UK from Jillian which specialises in pure strength with virtually no cardio, but it’s a welcome addition to her extensive back catalogue. We really loved the simple, back to basics exercises. Nobody will ever feel lost while watching these videos, and Jillian traces clear links between each movement and how it benefits the body.

She’s enthusiastic and knowledgeable throughout, and if you’re trying to buy female fitness DVDs then this will certainly help you along.

12. You Are Your Own Gym

Price: £16.99.

best fitness dvds

As a special operations trainer and internationally best selling fitness author, it’s safe to say that Mark Lauren knows what he’s talking about when he tells you that you don’t need expensive gym membership or equipment to get fit. If you wanted to find more books then take a look at our article on the best fitness books for more inspiration.

It’s incredibly reassuring to know that you’re getting the best fitness DVD for your money, and Mark’s explanations are always clear, concise, and easy to follow, making this men’s fitness DVD suitable even for absolute beginners.

The DVD contains 9 full-body workouts. These are divided over 3 difficulty levels, allowing you to scale up your workout if and when you feel capable of doing so. Mark advises doing 3 workouts per week, and since these are only 30 minutes each, you won’t be losing a great chunk of time, even with the accompanying cool-down exercises.

That said, this home fitness DVD isn’t a shortcut to fitness, and Mark continually stresses diet and consistency. You can’t simply do the exercises and nothing else. We like this approach, however, as it certainly feels more realistic than other fitness DVDs in the UK that promise miracle results with minimal effort.

As you might expect, the military-themed workouts are the most difficult, but the varying levels mean that if you’re ever stuck, you can always drop down a notch until you feel more comfortable.

What really sets this DVD apart is Mark himself. His explanations at the start of each workout are really useful, and he’s a brilliant motivational coach. You’ll never feel alone as you work your way through the levels and this is, without doubt, the best fitness DVD for weight loss motivation.

13. Ballet Beautiful - Ballet Fitness DVD

Price:£5.49.

cheap fitness dvds

If you’re looking for the best ballet fitness DVD that provides a low impact, relaxing workout that still brings results, then Ballet Beautiful might be for you. It’s inspired by ballet, so it’s not your usual dance fitness DVD. That said, all you’ll need to get started is a yoga mat, and 60 minutes of spare time per workout

Your instructor Mary Helen Bowers trained Natalie Portman for her role in Black Swann, and during the Ballet Beautiful course, she takes you through a number of movements designed to isolate and tone specific muscle groups. You’ll find:

  • A bridge series
  • Abs exercises
  • Inner thighs
  • Outer thighs
  • Standing series

Users have the option of running these exercises concurrently to make up the full 60-minute routine or practice each one in isolation. Although this is a lower intensity fitness and dance DVD don’t be fooled. The first time you attempt these exercises you will feel the burn afterwards, and you’ll get results quickly.

The aim is to tone a longer, leaner physique, but we actually found these exercises closer to yoga than traditional fitness programmes, and we really enjoyed the relaxing atmosphere of the ballet fitness DVD. You’ll benefit from the soothingly aesthetic background, relaxing music and a calm instructor who is a welcome change from some of the more shouty boot camp style coaches common on these products.

This is the best home fitness DVD in terms of bringing something completely new to the table. We loved the ballet theme and the soothing, no-stress environment. It makes a pleasant change from the high-intensity offerings elsewhere on the list, and it’s a great way to get fit without any of the accompanying stress.

14. Vicky Pattison's 7 Day Slim

Price: £3.72.

zumba fitness dvds

It’s easy to see a fitness video endorsed by a famous face and write it off as just another one of those celebrity fitness DVDs, but Vicky Pattinson offers something a little different. She’s enjoyed personal triumphs with the exercises included here, dropping 5 dress sizes and 3 stone.

The DVD promises to deliver similar success to anybody who follows the 7-day programme, and you can lose up to 5 pounds per week. A team of fitness experts including Team GB long-jumper Chris Kirk, fat loss expert David Souter and personal trainer Robbie Thompson collaborated with Vicky to create the DVD which, if you’re willing to put the work in, will deliver definite results.

We were particularly impressed with the length of the workouts. At just 10 minutes long, anybody (regardless of a busy schedule) will be able to fit the routine into their life. Better still, workouts are scalable, with an impressive 6 levels of difficulty. This makes it the best fitness DVD for weight loss in the UK if you’re on a tight schedule.

Beginners and experts are catered for and if you start to find a workout too easy, simply increase the difficulty by a level, safe in the knowledge that you can always revert back to an easier stage if you need to do so. This is one of the most accessible fitness DVDs on the market and we were big fans of the more light-hearted, animal-themed workouts like the gorilla and sea turtle.

Everything here is designed with a laser-sharp focus on weight loss, so anybody wondering what is the best fitness DVD for beginners to lose weight?  need not look any further.

15. Tara Stiles: This Is Yoga

Price: £22.91.

best selling fitness dvds

Tara Stiles is a yogi with a difference. She’s an internationally renowned yoga teacher who even invented her own form of yoga called Strala, which eschews the more esoteric elements of traditional yoga in favour of accessibility and ease. As you might expect, this is one of the latest fitness DVDs which anybody can get into and benefit from.

We can’t praise Tara enough for her continued efforts to make yoga accessible. You won't find complex movements or chanting, just simple exercises to make you feel better and fitter. While this isn’t a traditional fitness DVD in the same sense as some of the others on the list, there’s a lot for beginners and fitness experts to love.

Tara aims to help you build flexibility and strength, and she keeps a firm focus on mental wellbeing. The DVD contains yoga flows of varying lengths designed for different times of the day, including quick 5 minute routines for the morning, and longer 50-minute bedtime flows for maximum relaxation.

This level of variety is really impressive, and we were fans of the 1-hour Strong Yoga in particular, as well as the half-hour routine designed purely for relaxation. While it certainly isn’t the most high-intensity fitness programme on the list, Tara’s Strala form excels with its emphasis on mental wellbeing alongside the purely physical aspects of exercise.

If you still need convincing, This Is Yoga’s 4/5 star rating on Amazon (from an impressive 307 reviews!) is testament to many satisfied customers, and makes it one of the best-rated workout DVD programmes available.

  • 10 Best Workout Videos for Men

Body By Yoga Strong

Workout DVDs for men packaged with other products play a significant role in easing your fitness journey.

Workout DVDs for men offer a way out of exercising in the gym and using all those equipment. Most of the apparatus is complicated, unnecessary, or expensive for some people. Workout DVDs for men make use of your body weight, for that extra resistance and involve basic moves. However, depending on the program’s routine, you may need to improvise to follow the instructor's steps precisely.

Resistance bands come along with some workout DVDs for men, so you do not have to buy your own or be creative. These products provide more resistance to your muscles, increasing the effectiveness of your exercise. However, the bands vary in quality, and if they do not suit your needs, you are free to buy thicker bands to accelerate the fat burn.

A workout calendar and a fitness guide are other bonuses you might find in your new workout DVD for men. For your workout to be effective, you have to be consistent and maintain a particular frequency. The calendar and fitness guide ensure you sustain these two factors. You will find it better to use these to keep track of the number of sets you have done and on which particular day, rather than using a notebook.

Particular enterprises are mindful of what you eat as you work out and provide you with a nutrition guide. You have to eat healthily; accordingly, the guides have clean recipes that do not counter-effect your workout efforts. In case your workout DVD for men lacks accessories, you can always improvise. The good thing is the improvising is minimal and even forgeable. For example, a wall or a dining chair works well for declining push-ups when you do not have a workout bench.

As much as the brands are multiple in the market, not all of them have the same quality.

Times are changing with new innovative ideas every day. Everyone wants to milk such opportunities, investing in new ideas regardless of the experience and knowledge they have in the particular field. The home fitness program also faces similar challenges.

The market is flooded with people who just want to make money without much knowledge of fitness. That is why some workout DVDs for men are not as effective, with the trainer throwing caution to the wind. The techniques used may not be safe with high impact in short durations.

It is always safer to look up a trainer before settling on any particular brand. The more the trainers are experienced, the higher the chances are that they know what they are doing. Some have experience from their military days. As a result, you have the assurance that they been exposed to fitness training for a while. Some have been trainers for long; it is easy to come across their success stories on the internet.

The trainers focus on different areas. Accordingly, you should research on the ones that concentrate on your area of interest. They use various techniques, and not all the programs might suit you. For instance, Zumba by Beto uses basic dance routines that work well for someone who has to ease into workout out, before progressing to the demanding muscle building routines.

Effectiveness

A well-designed workout routine should have evident results and get you fit.

The moment you purchase a workout DVD for men, you start imagining how amazing your body will look at the end. The expected results motivate you to work harder each time you press play on your DVD. Depending on how effective the program is, the results will be noticeable just weeks into the routine and only if you follow the schedule faithfully.

The routine for the workout DVD for men routine should have a variety of exercises to help you work your muscles in different ways. Your body gets used to patterns, and the routine stops being sufficient after a while. Therefore, the workout DVD for men should mix different exercises to break any monotony and expose your muscles to a variety of stretches.

The workout DVD for men should challenge you every step of the way. Increasing intensity and resistance exercises enable you to push yourself harder. The workout charts should have new challenges and milestones weekly or monthly to discover your new strength and capabilities.

Ease of Use

The best workout DVD for men should guide you to your fitness path without much difficulty.

Working out is hard enough as it is; the workout DVD should not add many challenges that could make you quit the whole idea. Once you insert the DVD in the player, you should jump right into your exercising session.

Regardless, some workout DVDs for men have issues to do with the layout of the disk. The menu can be too hard to manipulate and frustrate you. You should be able to use the set of choices as you wish for optimal comfort. Sound controls, forwarding, rewinding, pausing, and selecting options are straightforward features, but some DVDs are not very user-friendly. Reviews like this one expound on such details.

Another issue people face is the incompatibility of a disk with the DVD player. A brand new CD may start freezing and have glitches. The formatting of the recording causes this, and you might want to contact the seller to inquire if it happens.

The instructor either uses fast-paced or slow techniques for different programs.

The effectiveness of a workout DVD for men is not based on how fast-paced or how slow the program is. The routine of the workout DVD for men might be sluggish and have a very high impact, or be very fast, with a low impact. The effect is not directly proportional to speed. The instructors designed them differently, and you ought to pick a routine that is comfortable for you.

Less content may not be the case for all Workout DVDs of short durations, as some of them tend to move faster to ensure the instructor covers many moves before the end of the clip. Lengthy DVDs have more time to encompass, even the warm-up and cool-down sessions are long, and they tend to take you through every simple step. However, the shorter ones do not necessarily lack these sessions.

Intermediate or professional level of training assumes that the trainee is already fit enough to keep up with its speed. These levels are strenuous, and the increase in momentum is part of the challenge put in place. You should be careful when purchasing your workout DVD for men to avoid jumping into an intense level directly. Workout DVDs with progressive levels are preferable.

Getting uncoordinated after a long while of not working out should not make you apprehensive when it comes to Zumba. The rhythms are exciting, and in harmony with the movements; they should get your flow synchronized in no time.

9 . Men's Health Kettlehell

Two Disc Set

20 Minute Circuits

Little Equipment Needed

Dynamic Workout

Requires Kettlebell

This intense, fun workout DVD features kettlebell training guru, Eric Leija, who started off in the fighting ring with martial arts at a young age. As he grew older, he pushed ways to build his training smarter and more effectively. Once he became a kettlebell coach, he also had the intuition to speak with and learn from movement specialists. This allowed the development of a kettlebell flow that he’s made famous in his training regimens. Partnering with Men’s Health, he’s developed a dynamic, brutally fun and effective kettlebell workout DVD.

One of the great things we love about this workout DVD is that you don’t need a gym or a ton of equipment. One kettlebell is what is required! And if you’re a bit tight on space at home, so long as you can find a clear spot to lunge and a high enough ceiling to swing, you’re good to go. You’ll learn basic kettlebell movements and a number of their variations along the way too. So, even if you’ve never picked up a kettlebell, you’ll likely learn proper form from the start with Men's health kettlehell.

In this two DVD workout set, you’ll find 5 different workouts, designed to target your entire body from upper to lower. Most of the workouts are circuit workouts about 20 minutes long, which will get your heart pumping, blood racing, and muscles burning. Many moves also combine together the technicality of kettlebell workouts, but also more functional movements that you would use every day. You’re sure to get a burn on with this set of workout DVDs from Men’s Health!

10 . Body Beast Tempo

Muscle Building

Under 60 Minute Duration

Weights Required

Perhaps you’re an avid weightlifter and have trained for a year or so following your own program to try and increase strength or to grow muscle size. This best home workout videos for men can help you get to the next level of training that you’ll need to help increase muscle size. Different formats and training types can fatigue muscle fibers differently, and tempo training is one of these methods. Combine this workout DVD with others from Body Beast for a full body, muscle burning workout!

The idea behind tempo training, is to keep the muscles engaged and working for a longer time period under tension. Each rep you perform with this workout DVD, will feel like you’re squeezing the last bit of juice out of your chest, back, and arms. Not only does this type of weight training fatigue muscles more effectively, something needed for building more muscle fibers, it will also help increase overall strength in those muscles trained.

Two workout DVDs are included in this set. One is a tempo workout for chest and triceps, and the other for your back and biceps. Several workouts are included in these DVDs, with most ranging between 30-40 minutes, and only a few that hit the 50 minute mark. It’s a great addition to your at home workout dvds, and can make for a muscle-scorching workout in little time!
