Creating Top Flight Paper Airplanes
It’s amazing what you can do with a simple sheet of paper. But, perhaps one of the more entertaining projects is folding — and flying — a paper airplane.
This is a fun activity any day, but paper airplane enthusiasts fly especially high during the month of May in celebration of National Paper Airplane Day.
Many schools, museums, and other organizations celebrate this end-of-month “holiday” by sponsoring paper airplane competitions where participants must fold their own paper airplanes. Winners are determined by the distance their paper airplane flies, as well as how long it can stay in the air.
How far can you throw a paper airplane?
According to the Guinness Book of World Records , the farthest distance that anyone has thrown a paper airplane to date is 226 feet, 10 inches. You can watch that video here .
At 3Doodler, we’ve long been interested in helping your creativity take flight. In fact, we’ve walked you through creating your own 3D airplane and 3D helicopter in previous posts.

In addition, paper planes resemble flight itself! As early as 500 BC, they found the first folding paper airplane that came from China. The popularity of these paper airplane flying toys is the same as the paper-folding craft of origami, which grew in Japan around the same time in China.
Paper airplanes are very helpful when you want to illustrate air traffic control guidelines. There was a time when people used the paper airplane to explain and discuss the fundamental parts of real aircraft. People of a certain age may recall buying those fancy "White Wings" in the store made from several sheets of squeezed chipboard paper, and these cutout versions are still paper airplanes too.

Origami is the Japanese art of paper folding. [1] X Research source The classic origami plane is made from a single piece of rectangular paper and consists of four parts: the nose (front), body, wings, and tail (back). After you master the basic design, get some friends together and stage flying competitions to see how far your plane can fly or how long it can stay in the air.The world record for flight distance is 226 feet 10 inches, and 27.9 seconds for flight time. - The opposite of a valley fold is a mountain fold, where the paper is folded to form an upside-down "V". [6] X Research source www.origami-resource-center.com/mountain-fold.html
- Compare the flight distance and speed of your origami jet to your origami plane.
Making an Origami Hang Glider
- Pair of scissors.
- Three metal twist ties
- Scotch tape
- Using scissors, cut one of the two large triangles along the outer black lines. Save the second triangle to give to a friend so they can make their own origami hang glider.
- Cut a small notch along the thick black lines at the base (longest side) of both triangles.
- Once the template is secured, cut around the outer edges of the triangle making sure it remains connected to the underlying paper.
- There are three valley folds. One line runs parallel to the base, and the other two are located at each end of the first line.
- There are three mountain folds. One bisects the top edge of the triangle, and the other two run parallel to the sides of the triangle.
- Have the template facing you at all times so you can orient yourself according to these folds.
- Once these have been folded outwards, pinch the mountain fold at the top of the triangle.
- Pinch along all three mountain lines, stopping at the end of the lines or where they intersect with a valley fold.
- Make sure the folds are crisp and symmetrical.
- Cut out the square labeled 'Front Weight Stabilizer'. Use this to cut-out a square from the same piece of lightweight paper you used to build the glider.
- Cut away the plastic covering on the metal twist tie until it is just a thin, metal wire. You can do this by cutting along the wire and scrape-off any remaining covering with your fingernails.
- Place a small piece of tape (no more than 1/2 inch) on one end of the wire. Tape the wire to one of the corners of your paper square.
- Place the paper square on a thick book so the corner with the wire is at the edge of the book. The wire should extend out from the edge of the book and have no support.
- If the wire tips down, then it is too heavy. Use scissors to cut-off small pieces of the wire until it only slightly tips.
- If the wire is perfectly balanced, it might be too light. You can make it heavier by adding tiny pieces of tape to the end not attached to the paper.
- Turn the glider over so the side with the template is facing down.
- Attach a small, square (ca. 1/2 inch) piece of tape to one end of the wire.
- Tape the wire so it exactly follows the fold that forms the nose of the glider. Attach it so the corners of the tape match-up exactly to the front edge.
- Turn the glider over and refold the front so the crease supports the wire. It is okay if there is a slight bend to either side of the fold. This gives the glider strength.
- Place the plane in the cover of heavy book.
- Push the vertical stabilizers down so they are not damaged.
- Close the cover and press down for 5 to 10 seconds.
- This will improve the camber by creating a more gentle curvature.
- If this angle is less than 20 degrees, increase the angle by bending it slightly forwards.
- Check that the angle on both ends is equal.
- Refold the vertical stabilizers so they form a 90 degree angle with the body of the glider.
- Separate the template from the paper if you haven't already. Bend the end of the wire up until it forms a small hook. Be careful not to tear the paper or disturb any of the folds.
- Use the wire hook to pick-up and carry your glider.
- Do not pick-up your glider from the back. This can damage the vertical stabilizers or the back flap of the glider, known as the elevon which is important for roll and pitch. [6] X Trustworthy Source NASA Independent agency of the U.S. government in charge of the aerospace research and the space program Go to source
- Use scissors to cut along the curved line in the back, and cut-off the pointed tips of the stabilizers along the solid black line.
- Walk behind your glider and gently wave a piece of cardboard that is at least 1.5 by 1.5 feet underneath it. This will help keep your glider in motion.
Expert Q&A
- A heavier aircraft is better for flying outdoors since the added weight helps decrease the effect of wind. You can increase weight by adding paperclips to the nose or wings. [7] X Research source Thanks Helpful 0 Not Helpful 0
- Hold and pick-up your plane from the nose. You risk damaging the wings if you pick it up from the tail. Thanks Helpful 20 Not Helpful 6
- Avoid curving or arcing your throw. This will cause the plane to nosedive. Thanks Helpful 16 Not Helpful 6
- Do not aim your plane or glider at people or pets. The edges of the plane are sharp and can injure eyes or cause paper cuts. Thanks Helpful 8 Not Helpful 3
Things You'll Need
- Airplane and jet: smooth piece of computer paper with no creases or wrinkles, 2-3 paperclips (optional).
- Glider: lightweight paper, scissors, metal twist tie, pen, and glider template.

For best results use a flat, thin-edged ruler. Make good creases along each edge. Adding double stick tape to the inside of the body keeps the wings from separating in flight.
The most basic version. A simple standard that everyone should know how to make.
- Fold the paper in half vertically.
- Unfold the paper and fold each of the top corners into the center line.
- Fold the top edges into the center line.
- Fold the plane in half toward you.
- Fold the wings down, matching the top edges up with the bottom edge of the body.
- Add double stick tape to the inside of the body. The finished plane should look like this.
This one is built for distance, plus it just looks cool.
- Fold the peak toward you and 3/4” from the bottom of the paper.
- Fold both top corners into the center line.
- Fold the remaining tip over the two flaps at the center line to lock them in place.
- Fold the plane in half away from you.
- Fold the wings down 1” from the bottom of the plane.
- Fold up the sides of each wing 1/2” tall.
- Cut two small slits at the back of each wing. Fold up the tabs.
Built correctly, this bee-like beauty stays in the air for a long time.
- Fold the paper in half horizontally.
- Fold the peak down to meet the edge of the previous fold.
- Fold the upper sides into the center line.
- Fold the top edge 1/2” away from you.
- Fold the plane in half towards you.
- Fold the wings down 1/2” from the bottom of the plane.
Count on speed and distance from this sleek plane.
- Unfold the paper and fold the top edge down 2”.
- Fold the top edge down again to meet the bottom of the previous fold.
- Fold the top edge down one more time to meet the bottom of the previous fold.
- Fold the top edges down and away from you to the center line on the back of the paper.
- Starting at the top of the thick nose of the plane, fold the wings down 1/2” in the front and slightly angled to 1 1/2” in the back. Fold up the edges of the wings 1/2”.
The Bullnose
This plane is deceptively fast and stays aloft for quite a distance.
- Fold the top right corner over to the left side, making a fold from the top of the paper to the bottom right corner.
- Unfold the paper and repeat for the left corner.
- Unfold the paper again and fold the top right corner over to meet the crease made from the first fold.
- Fold the left corner over to meet the crease from the second fold.
- Fold the top right edge over to meet the edge of the fold from step 3. Repeat for the other side.
- Fold the top edge down and towards you to meet the point where the right and left layers cross.
- Fold the plane in half away from you. Staring at the nose, fold the wings down at a slight angle, 1/2” in the front to about 2” in the back.

2. Bring the top corners toward the crease in the middle. Grab one of the top corners and fold it into a triangle so the edge lines up with the crease. Flatten the fold using your knuckle or fingernail so it holds in place. Repeat your fold on the other top corner so there's a point at the top of your paper. [7]
Unfold. 7. Fold the paper in half diagonally in the opposite direction. When you unfold your paper, the creases should form 16 equal-sized squares plus an 'X' that runs from the top-left to bottom-right corner, and top-right to bottom-left corner. 8. Rotate the square paper 45 degrees so it makes a diamond.
Unfold the paper and fold each of the top corners into the center line. Fold the peak down to meet the edge of the previous fold. Fold the upper sides into the center line. Fold the top edge 1/2" away from you. Fold the plane in half towards you. Fold the wings down 1/2" from the bottom of the plane.
