How to use MyUnisa to submit your Unisa assignments online

Are you an enrolled student at the University of South Africa (Unisa) who is having trouble submitting your assignments? Assignments for Unisa can be turned in online through the myUnisa dashboard, in a box designated for that purpose, by mail to the University of South Africa, or by courier.

Assignments at UNISA help you master the material and be ready for exams while also assisting instructors in determining your understanding of the subject.

They are necessary and required, and you cannot take the exam unless you have finished the corresponding tasks.

It is important to always keep a copy of your assignment in case the university does not receive an assignment and you are requested to re-submit a copy.

How to submit Unisa assignments

Here is a step-by-step instruction for submitting online assignments.

To submit an assignment, use a file format that can be uploaded to myUnisa. These formats are listed in the “ Specify the type of file ” drop-down list on the submission screen.

A pdf file is the preferred option (formatting and layout are retained). Do not submit assignments in write-protected/read-only pdf formats. Use only the Adobe pdf format.

Information on pdf converters can be found on your dashboard under “ Electronic resources ”. Navigate to the assignments tool to start the process.

When you click “ Continue ”, your assignment will be uploaded to the Unisa network.

This may take several minutes depending on the size of your assignment and the speed of your internet connection.

Once the assignment is received, its details will be displayed on your screen for final checking. You can either go back and make corrections or click on the “ Submit assignment ” to submit it.

Ensure that your answers to multiple-choice questions are ready before connecting to the internet. It will cost you money to work out answers while online. Check for mistakes before submitting your Unisa assignment.

Don’t wait until the closing date

Try to submit your assignments at least 3 working days before the due date, as you may experience unforeseen problems (e.g. your internet connection is down) on the day you want to submit my Unisa assignments.

Don’t run into grace period issues

Don’t submit the same assignment via two separate channels (eg myUnisa and the post). Any documents/assignments uploaded to your myUnisa admin must be virus-free.

If you repeatedly submit documents with viruses, you may lose the right to use my Unisa student portal.

Assignments of modules offered fully online must be submitted online. Hard copy unisa assignments submitted for online modules will be returned to the student unmarked.

Assignments submitted via myUnisa admin which are marked onscreen (except multiple-choice question assignments, blogs, portfolios, and discussion forums) will be available for viewing on my.unisa.ac.za.

Notification of the marked assignment (together with a link) will be sent to your myLife e-mail account. Download your marked assignment, so that you have access to it even when you are offline.

Unisa’s Assignment Division does not accept requests to cancel assignments submitted via myUnisa. It is your responsibility to ensure that the content of your assignment is correct before you submit it.

How to submit MCQ answers via Unisa MCQ app

The Unisa students can now submit their multiple-choice assignments via their mobile phones or tablets.

And here’s how to submit your multiple-choice assignment answers using the Unisa mobile application (Unisa MCQ app).

Steps to follow:

• Download and install the Unisa MCQ app from Google Play Store
• Install and start the application on your phone
• Select the “MCQ Assignment” option
• Login with your myUnisa* credentials
• Select your module
• Select the appropriate unique assignment number
• Select appropriate answers to the assignment questions
• Send your answers
• Receive immediate onscreen confirmation

Submitting via assignment boxes

If you live near Pretoria, Midrand, Johannesburg, Cape Town, Polokwane, or Durban and prefer to deliver your completed assignments personally, you may post your assignments in the assignment boxes, preferably two days prior to the assignment due date, at these Unisa campuses.

Do not post envelopes containing money in any of the assignment boxes. The University of South Africa does everything possible to ensure that assignments reach us safely, but the university cannot take responsibility for the loss of assignments as a result of fire or theft.

Assignments posted to the university must be in the envelopes supplied to you when you registered. Except for weekends and public holidays, the assignment boxes are emptied daily by Unisa staff.

The collection time is approximately 07:00.

If you submit an assignment via an assignment box and do not receive a confirmation via SMS from Unisa within 7 working days of submitting the assignment, contact the Assignment Division.

The criteria provided will detail the expectations for the assignment and how it will be assessed. Typically, students are graded according to how effectively they fulfil these criteria.

The grading process takes into consideration the content of the assignment as a crucial factor. This encompasses the level of comprehension of the subject matter, the precision of the information provided, and how well it aligns with the goals of the assignment.

Instructors or departments often provide students with specific guidelines that they need to follow. These guidelines may include word count, formatting, and submission instructions. Not following these guidelines could lead to a decrease in your grade.

Plagiarism and academic integrity are matters that universities consider with great seriousness. If a student is discovered to have plagiarised or committed any type of academic misconduct, there can be serious repercussions, such as receiving a failing grade for the assignment or even the entire course.

By and large, the grading is most determined by the lecturer as this can reflect this overall assessment for a particular module.

What is the pass mark for assignments at Unisa?

UNISA regulations and policy state that assignments may contribute a small percentage towards the final mark. In this course, the assignments we complete have the potential to contribute up to 15% towards our final grade. The maximum limit of 15% is set because we cannot ensure that the submitted work is solely the student’s own creation. Additionally, we encourage students to collaborate in groups , meaning that the work they submit may not be solely their own. We understand that many students have jobs throughout the year, and we want to acknowledge your hard work by ensuring that the assignments you complete are meaningful and count towards your overall grade. In most other courses at UNISA, assignments are not factored into the final mark. Instead, they are used as a prerequisite for the exams.

What happens if you miss a compulsory assignment at Unisa?

Missing a compulsory assignment at UNISA could be a big deal. If you miss a compulsory assignment, you must move on to do the next available assignment. 

In the case where you have no other assignment, it means you will not be graded for that particular assignment. In cases where this assignment contributes to your overall exams, it means you have lost some marks in your final exams.

Tips for completing assessments

Completing your assessments successfully involves

• reading the assessment instructions and questions .
• collecting the evidence , including photos, specimen documents and artefacts.
• compiling a structured response using study guides, lessons/study units, prescribed books, readings, observations, discussions, consulting a workplace mentor/learning supervisor and the internet ( please ensure that you are aware of what plagiarism is and avoid plagiarising the source materials ).
• using headings and subheadings (your assessment should include an introduction, a main heading, a description of the key facts, a conclusion and proper referencing, including in-text citations, a bibliography and acknowledgement, where applicable).
• providing as much factual information as possible, so that the marker can easily identify your knowledge and experience.
• ensuring that you refrain from academic dishonesty practices .

Remember: It's your responsibility to ensure that you assessments are received by Unisa . Do not wait until the closing date to submit your assessment. To check that Unisa has received your assignment, login to myUnisa , click on "myAdmin", "Assessment Admin" and then "Assignments submission".

Assignment results

Assessment results can be viewed on  myUnisa via myAdmin. To download marked written assessments, log onto your myModule site and follow these instructions. You will not be able to download the marked written assessment via myAdmin and the Assignment view. Marked final assessment files will not be available to download.

Unisa prescribes a set of minimum standards (academic progression rules) with which students must comply to ensure their continued registration with the university. These are set out in the Admission Policy.

A recent graduation ceremony at Unisa was a momentous occasion for a special group of graduates: students living with disabilities. These remarkable individuals have defied challenges and persevered in their academic journeys, obtaining their degrees and diplomas. Unisa is proud to celebrate their accomplishments and acknowledges the hard work and dedication it takes to succeed in higher education while navigating the challenges of disability.

Making use of support from the university in creating an enabling environment for disabled students, a number of students have demonstrated resilience and passion towards their studies until they graduated. We bring you the stories of three such individuals.

Pintias Nkuna, Lerato Masuku and Thabiso Molopo

Pintias Nkuna, Bachelor of Arts Honours in Psychology

Pintias Nkuna is the Acting Training, Research and Capacity Development Specialist in Unisa’s Department of Student Affairs. Nkuna was born without a disability, however, a tragic robbery in 1999, in which he was shot, left him paraplegic and wheelchair-bound. He explains: “I am permanently paraplegic because of gunshot injuries. I faced discrimination, including rejection by some members of my family and the community. Public transport is a nightmare because I have to load my wheelchair in first, resulting in impatience in the eyes of fellow commuters.”

However, he states that this did not deter him from pursuing his dreams.  “I decided to work three times harder to prove that persons with disabilities are very much capable and no different to non-disabled people. My personal experiences made it clear to me that living with a disability requires different and reasonable accommodation,” he added. Nkuna enrolled at Unisa with one goal – to dedicate his life to advocating for persons with disabilities. He is among the ARCSWiD (Advocacy Resource Centre for Student with Disabilities) champions, who volunteered their services to assist disabled students when the centre was established by Professor Olga Makhubela-Nkondo in 2003.

As a person with a disability, Pintias affirms that he is aware that enrolling at an institution of higher learning comes with challenges, including inaccessible transport, stereotypes about disabilities, inaccessible buildings, attitudinal barriers and financial constraints. However, he explains that he will use his qualification as a motivational tool to help those who cannot mentally cope with being disabled. In addition, he pleads for communities to liberate persons with disabilities from stigma and discrimination. He urges students to come forward and disclose their disabilities so they can get much-needed assistance from ARCSWiD.

Lerato Masuku, Diploma in Administrative Management

Masuku  suffered an ankle injury that required surgery and the insertion of screws to help mend the bones. This injury, she says, has significantly affected her mobility. “I face challenges with mobility, which affects my ability to move around campus easily and participate in activities that require physical exertion,” she says. “Despite these challenges, “I am determined to succeed and have adapted by utilising assistive devices, seeking support from faculty and peers, and focusing on my studies with determination and resilience.”

Masuku says she  aspires to make a positive impact in community organisations by leveraging her skills and knowledge to improve their efficiency, promote effective leadership practices, and advocate for inclusive policies that support individuals with disabilities. “I aim to contribute towards creating a more accessible and equitable environment where everyone has the opportunity to thrive and succeed,” she explains.

Regarding her experience at Unisa, Masuku says that it has taught her the importance of perseverance, adaptability, and never giving up on her goals. She states that she’s exuberantly proud of overcoming the hurdles towards completing her diploma. “It is a testament to my resilience and determination to succeed, no matter the circumstances,” she says.

She advises fellow students to maintain open communication with lecturers, advisors, and peers about their disability and any challenges they may face along the way. “Advocate for yourself and create support systems that can help you succeed academically,” she adds.

Thabiso Molopo, Bachelor in Business Administration

Molopo is a double amputee who lost both his legs when he was seven, after being hit by a car. He explains: “I used to be a prolific football player, but after losing both legs lived in fear that I will not become anything in life.”

He continues: “My experience at Unisa has been great,” stating he received quick assistance during registration. He advises that persons with disabilities should be patient with themselves, and they must study at their own pace and not overwhelm themselves by taking on too much.

With his degree, Molopo hopes to change the perception that communities have of persons with disabilities. “We should all be treated the same, no matter our physical challenge,” he adds.

In addition, Molopo plans to use the knowledge obtained from his qualification to grow his business and create jobs for unemployed youth.

A beacon of inclusivity

“ARCSWiD stands out as a beacon of inclusivity and support, dedicated to providing academic assistance and reasonable accommodations that ensure students living with disabilities thrive at Unisa,” says Bheki Nxumalo, Acting Deputy Director: ARCSWiD. Nxumalo adds that through individualised support services, accessible resources, and proactive advocacy services, ARCSWiD has helped break down barriers and create a more inclusive learning environment for students living with disabilities.

Concluding his message, Nxumalo says the graduation of each student with a disability serves as a powerful affirmation of ARCSWiD’s commitment to academic excellence and success. “In addition, he says, “it reminds us of the university’s transformative impact on inclusive education. As a result, we are continuing to innovate, advocate, and collaborate so that we can contribute to Unisa Strategy 2030.”
