Listen: we know homework isn’t fun, but it is a good way to reinforce the ideas and concepts you’ve learned in class. But what if you’re really struggling with your homework assignments?

If you’ve looked online for a little extra help with your take-home assignments, you’ve probably stumbled across websites claiming to provide the homework help and answers students need to succeed . But can homework help sites really make a difference? And if so, which are the best homework help websites you can use?

Below, we answer these questions and more about homework help websites–free and paid. We’ll go over:

  • The basics of homework help websites
  • The cost of homework help websites
  • The five best homework websites out there
  • The pros and cons of using these websites for homework help
  • The line between “learning” and “cheating” when using online homework help

So let’s get started!

The Basics About Homework Help Websites–Free and Paid

Homework help websites are designed to help you complete your homework assignments, plain and simple.

What Makes a Homework Help Site Worth Using

Most of the best sites allow users to ask questions and then provide an answer (or multiple possible answers) and explanation in seconds. In some instances, you can even send a photo of a particular assignment or problem instead of typing the whole thing out!

Homework help sites also offer more than just help answering homework questions. Common services provided are Q&A with experts, educational videos, lectures, practice tests and quizzes, learning modules, math solving tools, and proofreading help. Homework help sites can also provide textbook solutions (i.e. answers to problems in tons of different textbooks your school might be using), one-on-one tutoring, and peer-to-peer platforms that allow you to discuss subjects you’re learning about with your fellow students.

And best of all, nearly all of them offer their services 24/7, including tutoring!

What You Should Should Look Out For

When it comes to homework help, there are lots–and we mean lots –of scam sites out there willing to prey on desperate students. Before you sign up for any service, make sure you read reviews to ensure you’re working with a legitimate company.

A word to the wise: the more a company advertises help that veers into the territory of cheating, the more likely it is to be a scam. The best homework help websites are going to help you learn the concepts you’ll need to successfully complete your homework on your own. (We’ll go over the difference between “homework help” and “cheating” a little later!)

You don't need a golden piggy bank to use homework help websites. Some provide low or no cost help for students like you!

How Expensive Are the Best Homework Help Websites?

First of all, just because a homework help site costs money doesn’t mean it’s a good service. Likewise, just because a homework help website is free doesn’t mean the help isn’t high quality. To find the best websites, you have to take a close look at the quality and types of information they provide!

When it comes to paid homework help services, the prices vary pretty widely depending on the amount of services you want to subscribe to. Subscriptions can cost anywhere from $2 to $150 dollars per month, with the most expensive services offering several hours of one-on-one tutoring with a subject expert per month.

The 5 Best Homework Help Websites

So, what is the best homework help website you can use? The answer is that it depends on what you need help with.

The best homework help websites are the ones that are reliable and help you learn the material. They don’t just provide answers to homework questions–they actually help you learn the material.

That’s why we’ve broken down our favorite websites into categories based on who they’re best for . For instance, the best website for people struggling with math might not work for someone who needs a little extra help with science, and vice versa.

Keep reading to find the best homework help website for you!

Best Free Homework Help Site: Khan Academy

  • Price: Free!
  • Best for: Practicing tough material

Not only is Khan Academy free, but it’s full of information and can be personalized to suit your needs. When you set up your account , you choose which courses you need to study, and Khan Academy sets up a personal dashboard of instructional videos, practice exercises, and quizzes –with both correct and incorrect answer explanations–so you can learn at your own pace.

As an added bonus, it covers more course topics than many other homework help sites, including several AP classes.

Runner Up: Brainly.com offers a free service that allows you to type in questions and get answers and explanations from experts. The downside is that you’re limited to two answers per question and have to watch ads.

Best Paid Homework Help Site: Chegg

  • Price: $14.95 to $19.95 per month
  • Best for: 24/7 homework assistance

This service has three main parts . The first is Chegg Study, which includes textbook solutions, Q&A with subject experts, flashcards, video explanations, a math solver, and writing help. The resources are thorough, and reviewers state that Chegg answers homework questions quickly and accurately no matter when you submit them.

Chegg also offers textbook rentals for students who need access to textbooks outside of their classroom. Finally, Chegg offers Internship and Career Advice for students who are preparing to graduate and may need a little extra help with the transition out of high school.

Another great feature Chegg provides is a selection of free articles geared towards helping with general life skills, like coping with stress and saving money. Chegg’s learning modules are comprehensive, and they feature solutions to the problems in tons of different textbooks in a wide variety of subjects.

Runner Up: Bartleby offers basically the same services as Chegg for $14.99 per month. The reason it didn’t rank as the best is based on customer reviews that say user questions aren’t answered quite as quickly on this site as on Chegg. Otherwise, this is also a solid choice!

body-photomath-logo-2

Best Site for Math Homework Help: Photomath

  • Price: Free (or $59.99 per year for premium services)
  • Best for: Explaining solutions to math problems

This site allows you to t ake a picture of a math problem, and instantly pulls up a step-by-step solution, as well as a detailed explanation of the concept. Photomath also includes animated videos that break down mathematical concepts to help you better understand and remember them.

The basic service is free, but for an additional fee you can get extra study tools and learn additional strategies for solving common math problems.

Runner Up: KhanAcademy offers in-depth tutorials that cover complex math topics for free, but you won’t get the same tailored help (and answers!) that Photomath offers.

Best Site for English Homework Help: Princeton Review Academic Tutoring

  • Price: $40 to $153 per month, depending on how many hours of tutoring you want
  • Best for: Comprehensive and personalized reading and writing help

While sites like Grammarly and Sparknotes help you by either proofreading what you write via an algorithm or providing book summaries, Princeton Review’s tutors provide in-depth help with vocabulary, literature, essay writing and development, proofreading, and reading comprehension. And unlike other services, you’ll have the chance to work with a real person to get help.

The best part is that you can get on-demand English (and ESL) tutoring from experts 24/7. That means you can get help whenever you need it, even if you’re pulling an all-nighter!

This is by far the most expensive homework site on this list, so you’ll need to really think about what you need out of a homework help website before you commit. One added benefit is that the subscription covers over 80 other subjects, including AP classes, which can make it a good value if you need lots of help!

body-studtypool-logo

Best Site for STEM Homework Help: Studypool

  • Best for: Science homework help
  • Price: Varies; you’ll pay for each question you submit

When it comes to science homework help, there aren’t a ton of great resources out there. The best of the bunch is Studypool, and while it has great reviews, there are some downsides as well.

Let’s start with the good stuff. Studypool offers an interesting twist on the homework help formula. After you create a free account, you can submit your homework help questions, and tutors will submit bids to answer your questions. You’ll be able to select the tutor–and price point–that works for you, then you’ll pay to have your homework question answered. You can also pay a small fee to access notes, lectures, and other documents that top tutors have uploaded.

The downside to Studypool is that the pricing is not transparent . There’s no way to plan for how much your homework help will cost, especially if you have lots of questions! Additionally, it’s not clear how tutors are selected, so you’ll need to be cautious when you choose who you’d like to answer your homework questions.

What Are the Pros and Cons of Using Homework Help Sites?

Homework help websites can be a great resource if you’re struggling in a subject, or even if you just want to make sure that you’re really learning and understanding topics and ideas that you’re interested in. But, there are some possible drawbacks if you don’t use these sites responsibly.

We’ll go over the good–and the not-so-good–aspects of getting online homework help below.

3 Pros of Using Homework Help Websites

First, let’s take a look at the benefits.

#1: Better Grades Beyond Homework

This is a big one! Getting outside help with your studies can improve your understanding of concepts that you’re learning, which translates into better grades when you take tests or write essays.

Remember: homework is designed to help reinforce the concepts you learned in class. If you just get easy answers without learning the material behind the problems, you may not have the tools you need to be successful on your class exams…or even standardized tests you’ll need to take for college.

#2: Convenience

One of the main reasons that online homework help is appealing is because it’s flexible and convenient. You don’t have to go to a specific tutoring center while they’re open or stay after school to speak with your teacher. Instead, you can access helpful resources wherever you can access the internet, whenever you need them.

This is especially true if you tend to study at off hours because of your extracurriculars, work schedule, or family obligations. Sites that offer 24/7 tutoring can give you the extra help you need if you can’t access the free resources that are available at your school.

#3: Variety

Not everyone learns the same way. Maybe you’re more of a visual learner, but your teacher mostly does lectures. Or maybe you learn best by listening and taking notes, but you’re expected to learn something just from reading the textbook .

One of the best things about online homework help is that it comes in a variety of forms. The best homework help sites offer resources for all types of learners, including videos, practice activities, and even one-on-one discussions with real-life experts.

This variety can also be a good thing if you just don’t really resonate with the way a concept is being explained (looking at you, math textbooks!).

Not so fast. There are cons to homework help websites, too. Get to know them below!

3 Cons of Using Homework Help Websites

Now, let’s take a look at the drawbacks of online homework help.

#1: Unreliable Info

This can be a real problem. In addition to all the really good homework help sites, there are a whole lot of disreputable or unreliable sites out there. The fact of the matter is that some homework help sites don’t necessarily hire people who are experts in the subjects they’re talking about. In those cases, you may not be getting the accurate, up-to-date, and thorough information you need.

Additionally, even the great sites may not be able to answer all of your homework questions. This is especially true if the site uses an algorithm or chatbot to help students…or if you’re enrolled in an advanced or college-level course. In these cases, working with your teacher or school-provided tutors are probably your best option.

#2: No Clarification

This depends on the service you use, of course. But the majority of them provide free or low-cost help through pre-recorded videos. Watching videos or reading info online can definitely help you with your homework… but you can’t ask questions or get immediate feedback if you need it .

#3: Potential For Scamming

Like we mentioned earlier, there are a lot of homework help websites out there, and lots of them are scams. The review comments we read covered everything from outdated or wrong information, to misleading claims about the help provided, to not allowing people to cancel their service after signing up.

No matter which site you choose to use, make sure you research and read reviews before you sign up–especially if it’s a paid service!

body-cheat-cheating-cc0

When Does “Help” Become “Cheating”?

Admittedly, whether using homework help websites constitutes cheating is a bit of a grey area. For instance, is it “help” when a friend reads your essay for history class and corrects your grammar, or is it “cheating”? The truth is, not everyone agrees on when “help” crosses the line into “cheating .” When in doubt, it can be a good idea to check with your teacher to see what they think about a particular type of help you want to get.

That said, a general rule of thumb to keep in mind is to make sure that the assignment you turn in for credit is authentically yours . It needs to demonstrate your own thoughts and your own current abilities. Remember: the point of every homework assignment is to 1) help you learn something, and 2) show what you’ve learned.

So if a service answers questions or writes essays for you, there’s a good chance using it constitutes cheating.

Here’s an example that might help clarify the difference for you. Brainstorming essay ideas with others or looking online for inspiration is “help” as long as you write the essay yourself. Having someone read it and give you feedback about what you need to change is also help, provided you’re the one that makes the changes later.

But copying all or part of an essay you find online or having someone write (or rewrite) the whole thing for you would be “cheating.” The same is true for other subjects. Ultimately, if you’re not generating your own work or your own answers, it’s probably cheating.

5 Tips for Finding the Best Homework Help Websites for You

Now that you know some of our favorite homework help websites, free and paid, you can start doing some additional research on your own to decide which services might work best for you! Here are some top tips for choosing a homework help website.

Tip 1: Decide How You Learn Best

Before you decide which site or sites you’re going to use for homework help, y ou should figure out what kind of learning style works for you the most. Are you a visual learner? Then choose a site that uses lots of videos to help explain concepts. If you know you learn best by actually doing tasks, choose a site that provides lots of practice exercises.

Tip 2: Determine Which Subjects You Need Help With

Just because a homework help site is good overall doesn’t mean that it’s equally good for every subject. If you only need help in math, choose a site that specializes in that area. But if history is where you’re struggling, a site that specializes in math won’t be much help. So make sure to choose a site that you know provides high-quality help in the areas you need it most.

Tip 3: Decide How Much One-On-One Help You Need

This is really about cost-effectiveness. If you learn well on your own by reading and watching videos, a free site like Khan Academy is a good choice. But if you need actual tutoring, or to be able to ask questions and get personalized answers from experts, a paid site that provides that kind of service may be a better option.

Tip 4: Set a Budget

If you decide you want to go with a paid homework help website, set a budget first . The prices for sites vary wildly, and the cost to use them can add up quick.

Tip 5: Read the Reviews

Finally, it’s always a good idea to read actual reviews written by the people using these homework sites. You’ll learn the good, the bad, and the ugly of what the users’ experiences have been. This is especially true if you intend to subscribe to a paid service. You’ll want to make sure that users think it’s worth the price overall!

9 Best Homework Help Websites

July 22, 2023

homework sites review

When I was in high school, resources for extra homework help weren’t exactly abundant. If you were struggling with a Shakespeare sonnet, you could always run to the bookstore and pick up a CliffNotes guide. SparkNotes was also gaining in popularity. But these early homework help resources had limited catalogs and were focused primarily on literature. Today, I imagine students suffer from the opposite problem—having too many choices when it comes to homework help websites. When the options are seemingly endless, knowing what to look out for takes on an added importance. Below, I’ll go through a list of 9 stand-out homework help websites and briefly discuss what makes them worth a visit.

Homework Help Websites – The Basics

The best homework help websites do more than just spit out an answer to that tricky math problem. They actually help students learn the material. Common features of homework help websites are educational videos and lectures, practice tests and quizzes, study tools like flashcards, and Q&As with experts. Many sites offer features that allow students to ask specific questions and get real-time feedback. There are also a number of services that offer one-on-one tutoring. Some homework help sites are free, while others require a paid subscription.

1) Khan Academy

Khan Academy is an amazing resource for students of all ages. It’s free, and it really is an academy—it offers full courses in a wide array of subjects, from pre-K math to high school physics. The courses consist of readings, video lectures, practice exercises, and quizzes. The breadth of material is impressive. In math alone, I see course listings for Algebra 1 and 2, Geometry, Trigonometry, Precalculus, Statistics, Multivariable calculus—you get the idea. Khan Academy also offers a wide variety of AP courses, state-specific curricula, test-prep programs, and life skill courses, like personal finance.

It’s important to note that Khan Academy isn’t a one-on-one tutoring platform. But because of their extensive library of material, the search function is especially powerful. Try it out. I did a search for argumentative essay help, and found a comprehensive guide to writing argumentative essays that was a part of a larger writing course.

Chegg is a paid homework help service. Unlike Khan Academy, Chegg isn’t built around specific courses. Rather, it offers a variety of homework-support resources. Among those resources are plagiarism and grammar checkers, a proofreading service, and a “math solver”, which allows students to enter a problem and get back both a solution and a detailed step-by-step explanation of how the problem was solved. Perhaps the most powerful tool Chegg offers is its “Expert Q&A” feature. This service allows students to take a picture of their homework problem, upload it to the site, and get a detailed response in return. Chegg’s emphasis on process and explanation make it a valuable educational resource for students—not just a way to get a quick answer.

Best Homework Help Websites (Continued)

Quizlet is a well-known and worthwhile study resource. It offers a variety of courses, and it also has an expert-response feature. But Quizlet’s best feature, in my option, is the flashcards tool. Students can create their own digital decks of cards and practice them on Quizlet—just like an old fashion set of index cards. I had a ton of success using Quizlet’s flash card feature to help me memorize words for my foreign language requirement in college. It’s a simple but powerful tool. Although often maligned as a learning method, rote rehearsal and spaced repetition are effective ways to encode information . Quizlet’s flashcard feature is a great way to put those techniques into practice.

4) Socratic

is an AI-powered homework support app that allows students to type or take pictures of questions and receive solutions right away. Since it works with AI, it relies on the web’s vast stores of accumulated knowledge—you’re not interacting with a human tutor. Nonetheless, I found it to be an extremely helpful tool. I tried it out first using a specific math problem. In just a few seconds I was provided with the solution and an explainer with relevant formulas, plus a graphic to help visualize the underlying logic. There were also suggested links to additional resources. For example, when I asked Socratic to explain how the German genitive case works, it suggested a YouTube video and a number of articles from blogs and other language-learning sites.

Since Socratic doesn’t feature courses or one-on-one tutoring support, I wouldn’t lean on it if I were really struggling in a particular class. But as a tool to check your work, make sure you’re on the right track, and become aware of additional resources, it’s worth a download.

5) Photomath

Photomath is, as you might have guessed, a site for math homework help. Like other homework help websites, Photomath allows students to take a picture of a problem and receive an instant, step-by-step solution. Included along with the solution is an explanation of relevant concepts and formulas, plus videos covering mathematical concepts. Photomath does offer a few basic courses, too. So if in addition to homework-specific help you want to brush up on the basics, they’ve got you covered in arithmetic, algebra, and calculus crash courses.

6) Studypool

Studypool is a paid homework support service that provides solutions to specific questions. Studypool offers support in all the major subjects, with a particular emphasis on science. Students can ask questions on everything from anatomy to physics. Like other services, students upload their exact questions or problems directly to the site. But Studypool’s payment model is a bit different: instead of paying for tutoring time or a monthly subscription, students pay for solutions to each question they submit. When a student submits a question, tutors submit bids to answer them. The student then can select which tutor/price option works best. After students select the price and tutor they want, they’re connected with the tutor and given the solution and explanation via messenger.

The draw of Studypool is that it gives students access to real (i.e., human) tutors who are experts in their field. The downside is that pricing isn’t transparent, and students pay per question.

7) College Info Geek

College Info Geek is the study-support website that I wish I knew about when I was in high school and college (they didn’t pay me to write that, I swear). The site focuses not on specific courses or questions, but on how to become a more effective learner. Here it’s all about “learning how to learn”—study tips, memorization and note-taking techniques, and much more. The articles are well-researched, clearly-communicated, practical, and comprehensive. For example, the article on how to improve your memory includes a breakdown of the different types of memory processes, memorization techniques, and even a discussion of how nutrition affects memory. College Info Geek is a great resource for everyone, not just high school and college students.

8) SparkNotes

Yes, Sparknotes made the list! The site offers lessons in a whole bunch of subjects—biology, chemistry, computer science, history, philosophy, math—but its specialty is literature. SparkNotes provides summaries and analyses of novels, short stories, poetry, and non-fiction, from The Canterbury Tales to Toni Morrison, Saul Bellow, and Junot Diaz. SparkNotes breaks down books into sub-sections and provides synopses and analyses for each section. There are also separate pages for character breakdowns, discussions of themes and motifs, and explanations of important quotes. I’d caution against using SparkNotes if you’re trying to “hack” a novel or poem and get simple answers about what it “means.” But as a way to supplement your own understanding and interpretation, it’s a great resource. Shmoop is also worth checking out for extra support in literature, poetry, mythology, and the history of literary movements.

9) Grammarly

I’m not sure if Grammarly is an obvious or unexpected choice to round out the list. Either way, it deserves a mention here. Grammarly is a writing tool. It checks and suggests corrections for incorrectly spelled words and misused punctuation. But Grammarly also scans and corrects for things like clarity and vocab usage. It flags sentences that are vague, or overly wordy, and alerts you if you’re using that flashy vocab word incorrectly. It even gives suggestions if it thinks your writing is a bit bland. I don’t see Grammarly as a crutch, but rather as a tool. It can help you master those pesky recurring grammar and usage issues. Always mix up effect and affect? Grammarly will continue to course correct until you’ve got it down yourself.

Homework Help Websites – Final Thoughts

None of the above homework help websites should be seen as a panacea. Each has benefits and drawbacks, strengths and weak points. The list is far from exhaustive. And the sites don’t have to be used in isolation. Try a few out, mix and match. College Info Geek is an excellent supplement to any study regimen. Socratic can be used as a tool to check answers for math homework, and at the same time you can use Grammarly to describe your problem to a tutor on Chegg. At their best, these sites are more than quick fixes to stubborn homework problems—they’re aids to genuine learning.

The internet, a vast repository of knowledge, provides an invaluable resource for students in need of assistance with their homework. But with such an expansive digital landscape, finding reliable, high-quality educational resources can often feel like searching for a needle in a haystack.

That’s where our curated list of the best homework help websites comes into play. To help you navigate the limitless sea of educational platforms, we’ve done the legwork and compiled a selection of the very best websites offering homework help. These websites, vetted for their quality and effectiveness, cover a broad range of subjects, ensuring that every student finds the assistance they need.

1. AI Chatbots

Since I published this list on homework assistants, several shifts have occurred in the online landscape, one of which is the remarkable advancement of AI chatbots such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot, Jasper, Perplexity AI, among others. It struck me that these tools, if harnessed with care and responsibility, could serve as invaluable allies in the homework help arena.

These AI companions can offer instant assistance with a wide range of subjects, from math to literature, making them a flexible resource for students seeking to deepen their understanding or overcome specific challenges. Moreover, their ability to provide tailored support and explanations can make the learning process more engaging and personalized. It’s crucial, though, for students to remain critical thinkers and not rely solely on these tools, using them to supplement their learning journey rather than replace traditional study methods and the invaluable guidance of teachers.

Brainly is a website that offers homework help with subjects such as Math, Social Studies, World Languages, Computer Science, Arts, Geography, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, History, among others. Homework help in Brainly is community-driven and is provided by other students, tutors, Phds, and teachers. There is also the option for students to work 1:1 with tutors live. To learn more, check out Brainly full guide for students .

Chegg is another good website that offers homework help. More specifically Chegg offers three main services: Chegg Study, Textbook rentals, and Internship career advice. These services are accessible for a fee, the subscription plan starts at 14.95 per month.

The Chegg Study comprises the following features: textbook solutions, expert Q&A, writing help, math solver, premium flashcards, video explanations and more. To learn more, check out  Chegg’s full tutorial for students .

3- Socratic

Socratic offers homework help with Science, Math, Literature, Social Studies and more. Socratic provides visual explanations, video tutorials  and detailed step by step guides to help students understand complex concepts.

10- Khan Academy

Khan Academy is another very good platform students can use to access a plethora of educational resources covering different subject areas. The site offers tutorials, instructional videos, explainers, guides, lesson plans and many more.

Final thoughts

The landscape of education has been significantly altered by technology, and homework websites are no exception. They offer a range of features—from collaboration tools and assignment trackers to full-fledged courses—that are changing the way students engage with their studies. Whether it’s Khan Academy’s mastery learning approach or Chegg’s expert guidance, each platform brings its unique offerings to the table.

That being said, no homework website can replace the tactile experience of a teacher’s guidance, and not all are made equal. As with anything in the educational tech world, it’s crucial to critically evaluate the sources we rely on. In my experience, while some websites can indeed be lifesavers during crunch time or as complementary study aids, others can be more of a distraction than a help.

Best online tutoring services

We’ve rounded up and reviewed the best online tutoring services, so you can pick the perfect one to help with test prep or grade boosts.

Best online tutoring services

It’s difficult to pick the best online tutoring service. There are so many platforms available now — a lot of them with similar features — there’s almost too much choice for learners. On the positive side of things, this means that you’ll definitely be able to find a tutor that suits your needs, whether you’re a K-12 pupil or a college student. But you’ll also have to spend some time searching through your options.

This guide to the best online tutoring service should help you whittle down those choices. Below, we’ve highlighted some of the best tutoring sites for things like test prep and grade boosting, along with platforms that are suited to those with special educational needs. We’ve also highlighted the drawbacks of platforms, where they don’t quite meet the mark, so you know which ones to avoid.

If you’re also interested in independent learning, you might want to look through our guide to the best online learning platforms . These websites and apps offer a wide range of courses, in things like languages and sciences — although you won’t get the same level of attention as you would with an individual tutor. We also have guides to the best coding courses online , along with a breakdown of the best learn Spanish online courses . But if it’s definitely one-on-one tutoring you’re after, then read on.

1. Wyzant: Best online tutoring service overall

Why you can trust Top Ten Reviews Our expert reviewers spend hours testing and comparing products and services so you can choose the best for you. Find out more about how we test .

Wyzant logo

Our expert review:

Specifications

Reasons to buy, reasons to avoid.

Reasonably priced, with tutoring available across over 275 subjects, this is our top pick for online tutoring. It offers great flexibility, with prices starting at $10 and lessons available for the same day if you need. This is one of the few options that offers you the chance to meet your tutor online or in-person if you prefer. We like that the online platform offers plenty of learning tools, including an interactive whiteboard screen and the option to record and save lessons for future reference.

Its clean, easy interface makes it easy to use. The set-up process for finding a tutor is relatively straightforward, too. You simply put in what subjects you need help with, your current education level, when you’re available, and you’ll be presented with a huge pool of tutors who can help you. You can then browse through and pick the instructor who most appeals.

There are also learning resources readily available on the platform before you even start lessons, so you can use the site simply to browse through worksheets on subjects like English, math and science. User reviews for the platform are mostly very positive too, with people praising the patience and knowledge of tutors. The platform also offers a ‘good fit’ guarantee, which means that if you think that the tutor you’re using isn’t the best for you, then Wyzant will refund the first hour-long session.

2.  Remind Tutoring: Best for a consistent approach

Remind Tutoring Logo

Remind Tutoring

Remind Tutoring offers math tutoring to school-aged children in the United States who need a bit of extra support in the subject. The platform offers the same sort of service you would get from employing a tutor to come to your home, except the lessons take place on a video call and use an interactive whiteboard.

Students are matched with a coach, who will teach them on a regular basis – usually at the same time each week. The price is similar to traditional in-person tutoring at $60/hour so it will be beyond the budget of many families. However, we liked the consistent and personalized approach.

Coaches are all qualified teachers with real classroom experience and they set their students clear goals to work towards which take into account the areas where they need most help. Parents are encouraged to come onto the sessions to help with goal setting and detailed feedback and advice is given at the end of each lesson.

Remind’s strength comes with building long-term relationships to help students get results. There are no gimmicks or guarantees, just a free 40-minute trial session. After that, the lessons are priced at the same rate whether you book 10 or 100.

Some families will prefer the flexibility of other platforms where lessons can be arranged at a moment’s notice at any time of the day or night. But if you want the personal approach of face-to-face tutoring without having to invite someone into your home, Remind Tutoring could be the company for you.

3. eTutorWorld: Best for individualized lesson plans

eTutorWorld logo

eTutorWorld

‘Individual’ is the real buzzword on this platform, as the company boasts about its completely personalized approach to learning. This means that from the get-go, pupils (or their parents) will be quizzed about learning goals and preferred teaching methods. The personal ‘curriculum’ that’s designed for pupils will then be based around the student’s competencies and the areas where they most need to improve.

You don’t get to pick your tutor on this platform, as instead you’ll be matched with one that best suits your needs. This might not appeal to people who like to have total control over their learning environment, but eTutorWorld does have a thorough vetting process that guarantees all tutors are experts in their area. In fact, 90% of tutors on the platform have over five years of teaching experience, as well as expert knowledge of their specific subject.

User reviews of the platform are glowing on TrustSpot, with a 4.6 rating out of five overall. There’s only a handful of subjects covered here though (math, science and English) but tutors are able to cater to any specific goals surrounding these topics.

4. Revolution Prep: Best for test preparation

Revolution Prep logo

Revolution Prep

Revolution Prep caters to students from K-college, however it’s particularly well-regarded for its test prep success, which includes a combination of tutoring, mock testing and rigorous feedback. The platform offers different types of online tutoring options to suit different needs and budgets, from 1:1 test prep and academic tutoring to 3:1 academic subject tutoring as well as group test prep sessions with up to eight students.

In addition to live lessons, students can access on-demand videos, practice tests and more. There’s even a Homework Help tutoring option for grades 6-12 where students can drop in during “office hours” and discuss their work with a tutor. You can also access webinars on topics like reducing stress ahead of exams and finding out about financial aid options for free on the website, too.

The company follows a “growth mindset” mentality centered on improving kids’ results and confidence while enhancing an interest in the subject, all in a low-pressure environment. One of the key factors that sets Revolution Prep apart from competitors in this field like Wyzant and Smartthinking is that Revolution Prep’s tutors aren’t part-time, tutoring around other obligations: they’re full-time employees of the business, with rigorous annual training and development.

Any downsides? Revolution Prep doesn’t offer quite the scope in subjects and range as some of its competitors, and it doesn’t have the 24/7/365 option that some online tutoring companies now offer and parents have come to expect.

5.  Smarthinking:  Best for high-quality teaching

Smarthinking review 2021: image shows smarthinking logo

Smarthinking

Smarthinking is an online tutoring service best-known for on-demand live tutoring services for those in middle school, high school, college and beyond. The platform covers an extensive range of subjects, with 150 options across topics including writing, math, nursing, computing and Spanish.

A couple of things set Smarthinking apart from its online tutoring competitors: firstly, the selective vetting process, which ensures every tutor is rigorously checked and assessed (even after they’ve completed Smarthinking training). Over 90% of Smarthinking tutors have a master’s degree in their specialist area, and 15% of tutors have PhDs.

Secondly, Smarthinking is part of the Pearson family; as such, Pearson products are integrated into the tutoring experience (you also might be able to access Smarthinking for free thanks to its partnerships with various schools and colleges). It’s easy to use on a range of devices, and in addition to live tutoring, you can submit questions or essays for review.

For soon-to-be graduates, interview prep, résumé help and business writing is also available, so it offers a careers-style service as well as tutoring. As well as live, on-demand tutoring and writing review, you can also schedule lessons with a specific Smarthinking tutor up to 24 hours in advance. Unusually, and as an added bonus, you can opt for group sessions, either to work collaboratively without a tutor on the Smarthinking platform (no charge) or to have a tutor’s guidance on a particular topic.

Any downsides? Smarthinking is more expensive than some of its competitors, and while it does cover a lot of teaching ground, it’s not suitable for younger kids.

6. TutorMe: Best online tutoring service for immediate help

TutorMe Logo

TutorMe’s main USP is that you can access a tutor whenever you need. It promises to connect you to an expert “within 30 seconds” of your initial query, so you can get help with that tricky math problem or organise some last minute revision, even if you’re dropping them an email in the middle of the night.

On top of this, it also has an award-winning ‘Writing Lab’ feature, where students can submit essays or papers then receive feedback within 12 hours. It’s a good way to get some tips if you’re struggling in a particular topic and want to make sure your next assignment doesn’t get you a bad grade.

You’ll also find that the tutors are top quality, having gone through an extensive vetting process (the site claims that it only accepts 4% of applications it receives from tutors.) Throw into the mix an excellent bunch of features, like white board tools and video chat, and it’s easy to see why this platform is so popular.

It’s not necessarily the cheapest option, although there is the opportunity to have lessons billed at a $1 per minute rate (this could quickly add up, but it might be useful if you only need a five minute chat with an expert.) There are no group tutoring options though, and it’s also tricky to book lessons in advance, which is why it hasn’t quite netted the top spot on this list.

7. ArborBridge: Best for test prep and mentoring

ArborBridge

ArborBridge

When it comes to ArborBridge, the tutoring and test prep services come with a high success rate. The platform is results driven and the site claims that most of its students perform extremely well in tests – with nine out of 10 coming in the top 5% of those taking SAT and ACT tests. Students are matched with an experienced top-level tutor and a program manager who devise a personalized learning plan just for them.

Online lessons are accompanied with interactive tools like whiteboards and screensharing and detailed lesson notes are given out at the end of each session to help students and their families monitor progress. Students build a relationship with their tutor and program manager who get to know their strengths and help them overcome their weaknesses. But this comprehensive and personal approach comes at a high cost and the price of the lessons means ArborBridge is beyond the budget of the vast majority of families.

One thing we liked about the platform was that it offered test prep for a wide range of exams, including graduate-level tests. And while it represents a major financial commitment, you won’t be expected to pay unless you’re happy with the service as you can get a full refund if you’re not satisfied after three lessons.

8. SpecialEdTutoring.com: Best online tutoring service for special needs students

Best online tutoring services: SpecialEdTutoring.com

SpecialEdTutoring.com

Not every student is given the same opportunity to learn, and not every student learns the same way. Some have different learning abilities and challenges that can make them fall behind in a classroom where they are not given the best opportunities and individualized attention. Special education hopes to change that, but with a burdened school system, even students with no diagnosed learning disabilities are falling behind. The parents of these students, whether special needs with an IEP or those who are experiencing an increasing amount of difficulty, should look into the services that SpecialEdTutoring.com can provide. You can’t browse tutor profiles or know for sure if the subject your child is experiencing difficulty in will be covered, but that’s where you can benefit from a free consultation. Every tutor has a degree in Special Education and can follow your student’s IEP, so you can be confident that the service is worth your time and money.

9.  Learner: Best online tutoring service for math

Learner logo

The tutors on Learner are there to help with one subject only: math. A tricky topic, it’s one that a lot of pupils need help with - and Learner tutors can certainly be very helpful, as many of them are Ivy League graduates with specific areas of math-related expertise.

Like plenty of other online tutoring services, Learner allows pupils to connect with tutors via video call, where they can use whiteboard features to scribble down problems and discuss answers. You can access the first lesson for free – without providing card details – and lessons are recorded, so you can watch them back if needed. Tutors and pupils provide feedback after each lesson, to track progress, and the platform matches pupils with tutors who fit their specific needs.

The only real negative about the site is its hidden pricing structure. To get a quote for a lesson, you’ll have to connect with a member of the team. When we inquired, we were told that most lessons cost between $40 - $80. A little expensive, but you are paying for top quality tutors.

10. Preply: Best online tutoring service for languages

Best online tutoring services: Preply

This online tutoring service is exclusively for language students. Lessons are offered in 50 different languages, including Spanish, French and Italian. When we were testing out the platform, we found it really easy to navigate through, and the helpful scheduling tool meant that we could quickly see when tutors were available for lessons. The site puts more emphasis on your language proficiency, rather than your educational grade – it caters for all ages, but there's no way to filter tutors by grades.

If there’s any downside to this platform it’s that there’s an abundance of tutors, so narrowing down your search can feel like a mammoth task. And although a lot of tutors offer very reasonable prices on this site, lessons have to be booked in blocks (so there’s no option to sneak in a short and sweet session as a one-off before an exam.)

That said, we did like that the platform offers a ‘free trial’ period, where you can ask for your money back if you don’t think the tutor was a good fit for your learning needs. But with so many tutors available, we think it’s likely that you will find someone who can help you with your language skills.

  • Read our full Preply review

Why trust us for online tutoring

We realize it's impossible to review every individual tutor on these platforms, so instead we’ve ranked them according to things like features, pricing, ease of use and public user reviews. We also gave a higher ranking to platforms that offer some kind of guarantee, which means that you should be able to find an instructor to fit your learning style.

Choosing an Online Tutoring service

Accreditation We think the best sites are those that hire their tutors based on their credentials. You’ll want to find someone with teaching and tutoring experience before entering a session. You’ll also want to check out the safety and privacy policy of the tutoring service in order to protect both you and your students and to manage your payment options securely.  It’s also worth it to check to see if the site you’re using has a guarantee that protects you from having to pay for a bad first session with a tutor.

Features There’s a lot of technology that makes sharing information easier than ever. That said, even the most cutting-edge tutoring suites require some patience and know-how to use. Make sure you use the free trials and the demo learning suite tools to make the most of your experience before signing up for a certain number of minutes or entering into a payment plan.

Scheduling If you’re looking for help with a problem immediately, you’ll want to use the drop-in tutoring features of Chegg and TutorMe , another peer-to-peer tutoring service. These sites’ employment standards aren’t as high as others, but if you’re in a time crunch or low on funds, these are good go-tos. If you have a bit more time or need more involved help, you can schedule ahead with someone who has more teaching experience on sites like Skooli, or Mindlaunch, another site that requires teaching credentials before hiring.

Payment You’ll want to watch for payment plans that require you to pay a lot upfront. Though pay-as-you-go plans tend to be a bit more expensive than purchasing a package of hours, it might be worth it to use this option to make sure you’re happy with the service and your tutor.

2024 Homework Help Site Reviews

Chegg Review

  • Pricing from $14.95
  • Extra costs for extra questions
  • Tutors have college degrees
  • Video and asynchronous Q&A
  • 7-day return policy
  • "B+" rating from the BBB

Founded in 2002, Chegg stands as a multifaceted platform offering textbook rentals, test prep materials, homework help, and more. Popular with college students especially as a more affordable option for textbooks (rather than buying them directly from their university), Chegg is a popular name in academia. With the Chegg learning services, you can prep with college-level materials as well as homework help for high school. The primary part of Chegg that's relevant to Homework Help services is the Chegg Study program.

Get started right away

Getting started is extremely simple at Chegg. The main page has a huge search bar where you can quickly type in your questions. You can also upload your question via a photo of your homework (especially helpful if you have complex math problems to work through). If you're looking specifically for Homework Help, you can check out the Study tab on the main site. Here you have two options: Textbook Explanations and Expert Q&As.

Video help and quick questions

Chegg offers a variety of tutoring services across various subjects such as accounting, algebra, biology, calculus, chemistry, economics, finance, physics, and statistics, targeting high school and college-level courses. Chegg extends 24/7 homework help, priding itself on an average response time of 46 minutes from the moment a student submits a question. If you want to use the Textbook Explanations feature, this will be a video walkthrough with your exact textbook helping you to solve problems in the book step by step. If you choose Expert Q&As, you can expect quick answers by just snapping a picture of your homework question and one of Chegg's on-staff tutors will help you out.

Best Homework Help Sites

College degree or better to work at Chegg

While finding details about the qualifications of Chegg's "experts" is unclear on the website itself, looking at Chegg's job offerings shows that they require at least a college degree in the subject the tutors are helping out with. In some cases with more advanced subjects, tutors and homework helpers are required to take additional exams through Chegg to prove they're knowledgeable in updated methodologies or degree-related practices.

$14.95 per month

Chegg works on a subscription basis. A subscription to Chegg Study which includes the Homework Help, tutoring, and other features comes at a monthly cost of $14.95, providing full access. The subscription includes 20 homework questions per month. Questions beyond the allotted 20 can be purchased separately, although the pricing details for this service are not explicitly outlined on the website. Regrettably, Chegg lacks a demo or free trial for its textbook solutions tool, which offers step-by-step explanations and guided video walkthroughs. So, you'll have to join the program to test it out. While you can cancel at any time, that lack of a preview is a little frustrating.

7-day refund policy

If you're not happy with the tutoring services you get from Chegg, there's a Study Guarantee program in place. This means you can reach out to Chegg within seven days of your first session, sharing why you're dissatisfied with the service. Chegg will then carefully review your case and, if they agree, you'll get a refund. While this isn't as concrete as some other guarantees, we're happy to see that Chegg now offers this refund option as it wasn't clearly defined the last time we reviewed the company.

Best Homework Help Sites

Reputation has risen in recent years

Chegg previously lacked a rating from the Better Business Bureau, so in that respect, we're impressed by how far the company has come. Chegg has brought its rating to a "B+" from the BBB, which is much more reliable. However, it still has mid-tier ratings from third-party review sites. Although these student reviews are primarily centered on textbook rentals, we have seen a gradual improvement. On the other hand, feedback on homework help resources is relatively scarce. Some reviews highlight concerns that Chegg prioritizes providing quick answers over comprehensive explanations during tutoring sessions, potentially limiting thorough understanding of the material.

Solid option but could be more transparent

Chegg Study presents itself as a potential resource for students seeking prompt solutions to homework problems. The platform allows you to ask specific questions and receive step-by-step instructions or quickly find textbook answers. While it offers practical assistance, it is a little less helpful than some other services that offer more transparency on what the services entail. Chegg Study appears suitable for obtaining swift solutions but may not be the optimal choice for in-depth concept immersion. It has raised its reputation in recent years, and is a go-to source for textbooks. For all these reasons, and its affordable pricing, Chegg earns a solid rating in our review.

The beauty of these online lifesavers lies in their ability to connect students with experts who are adept at navigating the intricacies of academic challenges.

Late-night study sessions can quickly turn into a frustrating experience when you're grappling with a perplexing assignment. And, not all subjects are easily comprehensible. Every student has a unique learning style. When the classroom explanations fail to provide clarity, the homework can become an uphill battle.

Online homework help services offer tons of different learning tools and features. Imagine having access to personalized tutors, vocabulary flashcards, textbook solutions, searchable essays, and much more. The primary focus isn't merely on solving homework problems but on providing comprehensive, step-by-step assistance that aids in grasping the fundamental concepts.

Whether you're looking for one-on-one help in a tutoring session or a database to find answers specific to your textbook, there's a service out there that will serve your study needs. The best part is that many of these services operate 24/7, so you have a reliable homework lifeline whenever the need arises.

Since there are so many sites out there that offer homework help, making the right choice can be daunting. Before committing to a membership or a pay-per-question service, be sure to check out these criteria:

  • Subjects offered. Make sure the platform you choose has the subjects and level that you need to get your homework questions answered. Some only offer K-12 whereas others offer all grade levels (even for graduate degrees).
  • Cost. Pricing can play a huge role in which service you select. While some companies offer free homework help services, others charge per service or per month. Knowing how much you want to spend and balancing that with the quality of homework help can make sure you find the right company.
  • Reputation. Real user experiences can provide valuable insights into whether or not a service is right for you. Are other students succeeding at getting answers to their homework problems? Are there concerns about payments or security? Check customer reviews and a company's reputation with the Better Business Bureau to get a clear look at how each business operates for students just like you.
  • Variety of services. Everyone has a different learning style. Make sure that your chosen platform has the learning tools you need. Are you looking for resources, such as video tutorials, interactive quizzes, and practice problems? Or do you want one-on-one interaction with a tutor to help explain the homework to you? Whether you want synchronous learning opportunities or asynchronous work at any time of the day, make sure the platform you choose supports that learning style.

To make sure you find the best homework help on the market today, Top Consumer Reviews has meticulously reviewed and ranked the top services. We hope this helps you stop worrying about how you're going to complete your complex homework and begin focusing on getting the answers you need to move forward with your course or degree program. Happy learning!

5-Best-Homework-Help-Websites-You-Should-Know-Going-Back-to-School

Balancing everything that school throws your way can feel like a challenging task. But you’re not alone! The internet has plenty of resources to assist, including some of the best homework help websites. Homework help sites range from offering textbook solutions to providing access to online tutors who are there to help with your specific needs.

When studying to become the best student you can be, it’s natural to need assistance. As such, you can look to some of these sites to help you better succeed in completing your homework and learning necessary material.

Homework websites for students.

Let’s dive right into some of the different types of websites, including homework help websites for college students, as well as students of all other levels.

1. Top Homework Helper

This site provides students with access to over 3,000 tutors who are available to help solve homework problems across an array of subjects, including: Science, Geometry, Accounting, History, Finance, Physics, Chemistry, College Homework, and more. With tutors that support middle school to college-level courses, the live tutoring and 24/7 customer support provides students with a valuable asset.

2. Khan Academy

Khan Academy is an online, free and non-profit provider of education. Students can choose from an impressive list of subjects that span from all levels, including early math to AP Biology and more. The site even offers help with test prep for the SAT , ACT, MCAT, GMAT and other college-level entrance exams.

3. Study Geek

Oftentimes, it is math that challenges most students. For this reason, Study Geek offers help solely in all levels of math. From Trigonometry to Calculus, Statistics to Algebra and more, this site leverages those who have earned their PhD in Mathematics to assist students. The options to learn include math games, vocabulary, and other lessons.

4. Tutor.com

Similar to Top Homework Helper, Tutor.com provides students with access to tutors. Every session is tailored to your needs as you receive your own personal tutor to help you with school for levels K-12 and college. The tutors are PhD graduates and Ivy League school teachers, professors, doctors, and more.

Chegg Study, also known as Cramster, provides students with homework help through offering solutions for your textbook and homework problems. The site also provides expert Q&A sessions and 30 minutes of free tutoring online. A searchable forum exists with questions that have previously been asked by students, which means that your answers may even be waiting for you when you arrive to the site.

A note of caution.

When seeking help online for homework or writing assignments, you may be tempted to let someone else do the work for you. However, that is considered cheating and/or plagiarism, and it results in serious consequences, such as being expelled.

Even when you feel like you cannot gather the strength to write a paper or complete an assignment, or you are worried you will fail, you must not give up. Instead, you can leverage resources like online tutors, family and friends, mentors, peers , professors, and teacher’s assistants.

It’s always in your own best interest to try to complete your own assignments. After all, that’s why you’re getting an education!

Some Extra Study Tips

Along with homework comes the need to study for exams. Homework acts as supplementary work to reiterate all the material you learn in your classes and prepare you on a consistent basis for an upcoming exam, as well as to retain the information.

Here are a few study tips that are useful for students of all ages and academic levels.

1. Note-Taking 101

Note-taking is more of an art than a science. When you are in class, whether it be online or in person, it’s important to take notes. But you don’t want to write everything down, so be aware of key topics and bold headlines, as well as lists. Take the main idea from each lesson and write it down in your own words.

Another useful tip for note-taking is to use different colors. You can use colors to either highlight or write, and this can be done strategically so that, for example, all dates are in red, all vocabulary words are in blue, etc. It’s an easy way for your mind to recognize and categorize different tidbits of information for better recall.

2. Read Out Loud

There are different types of learners — some are visual, others are auditory, for example. If you find yourself to be an auditory learner, which means you remember best when you hear something, then try reading to yourself out loud.

Another good time to read out loud is when you write a paper or complete homework that is a writing assignment. Oftentimes, our brain can see a typo and skip over it, but when you read it out loud, you are more likely to hear the mistake and be able to make the correction.

3. Time Management

Time management is an essential part of life, especially when you are a student. Be sure to write down homework deadlines and test dates so you can prepare in advance. Another benefit to writing down your deadlines and test dates in a planner is so that you won’t forget them.

When you have your assignments listed, it’s also easier to ask for help and manage your time. If you need help in a specific subject, you can reference one of the resources above and get in contact with a tutor or further study the subject matter before the assignment is due or the test date arrives.

The Bottom Line

Homework is not meant to be scary, and it doesn’t exist to waste your time or stress you out. Instead, it is there to better prepare you to retain course information so you can continue to build on what you already know.

However, it’s normal to need homework help, and while some people may use their family or friends for help, others need more in-depth assistance. Around-the-clock online homework help solutions are there for your every need. A wide variety exists so that no matter what level you are at and what subject you need help with, you will be able to find a subject matter expert that is there for you!

Homework Gap Report: The 10 Best and Worst States for Online Learning

Here’s how the loss of ACP funding affects the US students’ access to internet (and what to do about it)

Brianne Sandorf

Funding for the federal government’s Affordable Connectivity Program is going to be completely out by the end of May—raising concerns about internet access for U.S. students and how they’re impacted by the “homework gap.”

The National Education Association calls the homework gap "the barriers students face when working on homework assignments without a reliable internet source at home."

Since 2021, the U.S. has made strides in closing the homework gap with assistance programs like the ACP, which provides up to $30 monthly toward internet payments. But without the programs, we suspect the gap to only worsen. We did a deep dive into how lack of ACP funding might affect students' homework completion and how to potentially overcome those obstacles.

Guide to online learning in the US:

  • Internet access at a glance

10 best states for online learning

10 worst states for online learning, how to close the homework gap, methodology, student internet access at a glance.

In our deep dive into student internet access, we learned a few interesting facts:

  • Nearly 3 million children ( 4.57% ) in the U.S. don't have access to the internet.
  • Almost 1 million children ( 27% ) still don't have a computer at home.
  • Only 27% of students under age 18 with no high-speed internet connection go on to complete a postsecondary program. That's in contrast to 96.66% of those with a high-speed internet connection.
  • The states with the biggest homework gaps all have poverty rates of 8% or higher.
  • The top 10 states with the biggest homework gaps relied on government-assisted internet programs with an enrollment rate of 36% or higher.
  • 4% of households in the United States enrolled in the ACP.

Homework gap 2024 map

Internet access has gone from a nice-to-have utility to a necessary utility. In a recent survey, 70% of Americans told Reviews.org that affordable internet access is essential to their daily lives.

“As a software dev, I can tell you that the internet is way more ingrained in every facet of our daily lives, more than we'll ever be able to gather. No internet means no opportunities,” says Sean Spittle, the lead software developer and managing partner at inspection software firm InspectNTrack.

However, the average internet connection costs $81 a month , or $972 a year. Unfortunately, not everyone has $1,000 to spare.

Top 10 best states for online learning

In an unexpected win, rural North Dakota leads as the best state for online learning. Only 5.53% of North Dakotan households were enrolled in the ACP, and only 5.52% of individuals under 18 lack essential technology access.

New Hampshire follows closely, boasting a mere 2.50% of individuals under 18 without a computer and broadband subscription. North Hampshirites also enjoy a high average internet speed of 161Mbps .

Reviews.org's home state, Utah, also stands out with just 3.35% of individuals under 18 lacking necessary technology access and a solid average internet speed of 139Mbps .

Top 10 worst states for online learning

Going purely by the numbers, Louisiana leads as the worst state for online learning. A total 31.89% of Louisianan households were enrolled in the ACP. The end of ACP funds means nearly one-third of Louisianans may struggle to access affordable internet for remote education.

Nevada also stands out. It has the highest average internet speed ( 155Mbps ) among the top 10 worst states. But despite good connectivity, Nevadans still have a high ACP enrollment rate. Part of this less-than-ideal online learning trend may be due to Nevada’s historic economic disparity across racial lines .

Michael D. Smith, a professor of information technology at Carnegie University and author of the 2023 book The Abundant University: Remaking Higher Educatio n for a Digital World , says that accessible internet is crucial to today’s educational setup, especially for those who’ve opted for online-only higher education. “Finding free Wi-Fi at a public library, or Panera, or a friend's house is nowhere near as convenient as having it at home,” Smith says.

Students need access to low-cost, accessible internet connections to complete their school work. A 2021 study in Ghana found “ internet access influences academic standards among students, as those with internet access have shown a higher improvement in academic performance than those without.”

With that in mind, here are a few lower-cost internet options that might work for families with limited financial resources.

Not all of these plans are available everywhere, but most areas in the U.S. have access to at least one.

If you don’t live in an area with affordable internet, you might be able to use free public Wi-Fi hotspots . While these won’t work for every student, they’re a viable alternative to home internet access.

And although (as Professor Smith says) using Wi-Fi at a library, a friend's place, or a Panera is less convenient than internet in the home, lower-income families can take advantage of such resources in a pinch. According to the Pew Research Center, half of lower-income families using the library already report that their children visit to complete homework rather than to check out books or enjoy library programs.

To source our list, we ranked each state’s online learning situation from best to worst using three factors.

  • 33% of the score came from the percentage of students without home computer access or broadband subscriptions by state, according to the latest US Census data from the 2022 American Community Survey. Higher percentages of households with no broadband subscriptions positively impacted the score.
  • 33% of the score came from the percentage of American households who enrolled in the Affordable Connectivity Program before the Universal Service Administrative Co. capped applicants in March 2024. Higher percentages of enrolled households positively impacted the score.
  • 33% of the score came from the average internet speed by state from Reviews.org. Higher speeds negatively impacted the score.

OpenAI’s new GPT-4o model lets people interact using voice or video in the same model

The company’s new free flagship “omnimodel” looks like a supercharged version of assistants like Siri or Alexa.

  • James O'Donnell archive page

screenshot from video of Greg Brockman using two instances of GPT4o on two phones to collaborate with each other

OpenAI just debuted GPT-4o, a new kind of AI model that you can communicate with in real time via live voice conversation, video streams from your phone, and text. The model is rolling out over the next few weeks and will be free for all users through both the GPT app and the web interface, according to the company. Users who subscribe to OpenAI’s paid tiers, which start at $20 per month, will be able to make more requests.

OpenAI CTO Mira Murati led the live demonstration of the new release one day before Google is expected to unveil its own AI advancements at its flagship I/O conference on Tuesday, May 14.

GPT-4 offered similar capabilities, giving users multiple ways to interact with OpenAI’s AI offerings. But it siloed them in separate models, leading to longer response times and presumably higher computing costs. GPT-4o has now merged those capabilities into a single model, which Murati called an “omnimodel.” That means faster responses and smoother transitions between tasks, she said.

The result, the company’s demonstration suggests, is a conversational assistant much in the vein of Siri or Alexa but capable of fielding much more complex prompts.

“We’re looking at the future of interaction between ourselves and the machines,” Murati said of the demo. “We think that GPT-4o is really shifting that paradigm into the future of collaboration, where this interaction becomes much more natural.”

Barret Zoph and Mark Chen, both researchers at OpenAI, walked through a number of applications for the new model. Most impressive was its facility with live conversation. You could interrupt the model during its responses, and it would stop, listen, and adjust course.

OpenAI showed off the ability to change the model’s tone, too. Chen asked the model to read a bedtime story “about robots and love,” quickly jumping in to demand a more dramatic voice. The model got progressively more theatrical until Murati demanded that it pivot quickly to a convincing robot voice (which it excelled at). While there were predictably some short pauses during the conversation while the model reasoned through what to say next, it stood out as a remarkably naturally paced AI conversation.

The model can reason through visual problems in real time as well. Using his phone, Zoph filmed himself writing an algebra equation (3 x + 1 = 4) on a sheet of paper, having GPT-4o follow along. He instructed it not to provide answers, but instead to guide him much as a teacher would.

“The first step is to get all the terms with x on one side,” the model said in a friendly tone. “So, what do you think we should do with that plus one?”

GPT-4o will store records of users’ interactions with it, meaning the model “now has a sense of continuity across all your conversations,” according to Murati. Other highlights include live translation, the ability to search through your conversations with the model, and the power to look up information in real time.

As is the nature of a live demo, there were hiccups and glitches. GPT-4o’s voice might jump in awkwardly during the conversation. It appeared to comment on one of the presenters’ outfits even though it wasn’t asked to. But it recovered well when the demonstrators told the model it had erred. It seems to be able to respond quickly and helpfully across several mediums that other models have not yet merged as effectively.

Previously, many of OpenAI’s most powerful features, like reasoning through image and video, were behind a paywall. GPT-4o marks the first time they’ll be opened up to the wider public, though it’s not yet clear how many interactions you’ll be able to have with the model before being charged. OpenAI says paying subscribers will “continue to have up to five times the capacity limits of our free users.”

‘marvel rivals’ apologizes for ‘positive reviews only’ creator contract.

Marvel Rivals

NetEase has apologized for a creator contract regarding its still-in-alpha Overwatch clone, Marvel Rivals, designed to stamp out potential negativity about the game.

The original agreement contained a “non-disparagement” section where among other things, creators were not to be “engaging in malicious comparisons with competitors or belittling the gameplay or differences of Marvel Rivals or providing subjective negative reviews of the game.”

I’ve heard some weird NDA/review rules in my day but “don’t be negative about the game” put that plainly is one of the more ridiculous things I’ve ever seen. I even saw a few creators start to get removed from the program as they started to talk about this, but they’ve since been reinstated, and NetEase has issued an apology and promise it will relax the language. Here’s what they said about the issue:

“We sincerely apologize for the confusion, suspicion, and frustration caused by these excessively restrictive terms and thank you for sharing with us. We cherish and appreciate every suggestion given by our players and always respect your feedback. We are currently working with Creators who have expressed these concerns and are revising the current version to be less restrictive and more Creator-friendly. Thank you for bearing with us while we make these adjustments.”

Best Nintendo Switch Games: It’s Mario’s World, We’re Just Visiting

Again, this was not for like, game journalist-scored reviews for the game, but creator “first look” type early streams/thoughts, which is sort of a different category. But it’s another example of how the line between creator and full-on marketer can be blurred. It’s one thing if you’re asked to make a specific disclosed ad for something, it’s another when you’re given access to an alpha to constantly stream and make content about and you’re not allowed to be negative in any sense or compare it to other games (gee, what might people be comparing it to?).

This is also viewed as such an own goal because the sentiment around Marvel Rivals is…mainly really positive. Players seem to be liking the superhero take on Overwatch with its stylized design and fun character kits. While even in bad games there shouldn’t be clauses like this, it really didn’t even matter here.

The closed alpha test is ongoing and we’ll see how things continue to evolve from here. Hopefully this is behind us and the new terms are going to be less controversial with creators allowed to freely give feedback about the game. I’m looking forward to playing myself, but this was a huge miss and never should have happened in the first place.
