If you’re brand-new to the official event-planning industry, it’s easy to think that the job is all glitz, champagne, and celebrations. While that’s the result of your careful planning, things are a lot less glamorous behind the curtain. For any event, there are about a thousand boxes you (the professional planner) have to check off to ensure that everything runs smoothly for the client and attendees.

Those tasks may include, but aren’t limited to:

  • Creating an event design or theme
  • Arranging entertainment
  • Finding the venue
  • Booking vendors
  • Sending RSVPs and marketing information to attendees
  • Balancing a budget
  • Coordinating with staff and subcontractors
  • Decorating the space
  • Handling the catering and bar staff
  • Supervising the event

There are about a thousand more boxes to check off within each one of these tasks. The Type A personality type is well-suited to this line of work. You need to be:

  • Detail-oriented
  • Extremely organized
  • An ace problem solver
  • Have excellent communication skills.

Beyond that, you need to be a savvy negotiator, understand how to manage a budget, and know how to market your services. Especially if you’re a wedding planner, you must have high emotional intelligence to put nervous brides, grooms, wedding parties, and other starring attendees at ease in the midst of high-pressure situations.

If you’re not yet sure that your heart is fully in starting an event planning business on your own, it’s a good idea to give the job a test run. First, consider working as a personal or production assistant for an event planning company or experienced party planner. That way, you can see if the job is a good fit before you strike out on your own and find your corner of the business.

Once you’re clear on what the job entails, nail down your niche. Although you may be tempted to advertise yourself to prospective clients as a jack-or jill-of-all-trades, that’s actually not the best marketing strategy. If you’re a wedding planner, for instance, will you offer full-service planning leading up to the wedding, or will you also offer day-of coordinating? While it is wonderful to receive recognition and rewards in a Party Plan business, what many women really need is a paycheck–a steady, consistent income that their family can rely upon. But often, that paycheck just isn’t there. Some of the top producers in these companies are working extremely hard, but not receiving a paycheck that reflects the level of work they are performing.

Ironically enough, the trips and prizes, while fun to receive, can be a detriment.  You must pay tax on those prizes.  So in addition to an unsteady income that accompanies Party Plan businesses, a top producer may pay a lot of tax and have very little cash to show for it.

Our team has worked with countless women who have had this experience in their Party Plan business–tons of work involving carrying inventory, continually booking parties and shows, but a paycheck that can vary drastically from month to month.

People are “partied out”.

Party plan businesses are heavily focused on recruiting..

Lastly, one of the cons of Party Plan businesses is that these businesses are almost exclusively focused on recruiting. Yes, you can make a commission off the products you sell.

But the profits of those sales are limited.  So, in order to bring in more income, there is large emphasis to recruit and build a team.  These team members then need to buy inventory and products to have on hand, which you are compensated for.

However, those products often do not end up with an end consumer. They may be sitting in someone’s garage or storage room–not actually being purchased by someone who will be using them.   So often, your ‘bigger paycheck’ is built on the credit card debt that your consultant can’t pay off.  It can become a vicious cycle.

This focus on recruiting means that there is less emphasis on creating a solid customer base and more emphasis on creating a huge team. Of course, having a large team can mean a nice income–but that can crumble very quickly when there is not a customer base to hold up the team’s inventory purchases.

Those are just a few of the pros and cons of Party Plan businesses. And of course, experiences within these companies can vary widely.

The Royal Family Is ‘Not Embarrassed’ by Kate Middleton’s Family’s Business Failing, Expert Says (Exclusive)

The royal family has no judgments when it comes to the financial collapse of the Middletons’ party planning company, one expert says.

“No one in the royal family is embarrassed by the failure of Party Pieces,” author Christopher Andersen , who has penned bestselling books about the royals including Brothers and Wives: Inside the Private Lives of William, Kate, Harry and Megan , exclusively told Us Weekly on Thursday, April 4.

Princess Kate Middleton ’s parents, Carole and Michael Middleton , were forced to sell Party Pieces in May 2023 due to mounting debts. U.K.’s The Times reported on Monday, April 1, that the couple, who founded the company in 1987, are still struggling to come up with over $329,000 in “insolvency firm costs.”

Andersen told Us that the business failure is not indicative of the Middletons’ personal finances.

“People shouldn’t make the mistake that the Middletons are broke, because they decidedly are not. Their business went belly-up because of things entirely out of their control, but that doesn’t mean they haven’t got substantial personal assets,” he said.

How the Royal Family Feels About the Middleton s Money Troubles

Andersen pointed out that both Carole, 69, and her brother, Celebrity Big Brother star Gary Goldsmith , have built “considerable fortunes” for themselves.

“In Carole’s case, the party supply business she founded flourished for years until, like so many other businesses, it was undone by COVID. For nearly two years, nobody was giving children’s parties and the lingering effects have been devastating. The entire market for what Party Pieces was selling went straight off the end of a cliff,” he explained.

Carole and Michael’s ongoing financial troubles is just one of the problems currently plaguing the family. After over a month of speculation about her whereabouts, Kate, 42, announced last month that cancer was discovered when she underwent abdominal surgery in January. The update came one month after Buckingham Palace confirmed King Charles III’ s own cancer diagnosis.

Andersen told Us that given “all that is happening with the royal family at the moment,” it’s unlikely that “the Middletons’ business setbacks” are sparking concern.

“Between the king’s cancer battle and Kate’s cancer battle, the last thing they have on their minds is how much the Middletons owe their creditors,” he said. “We have to keep in mind that Carole Middleton is focusing on helping her daughter cope with what is a devastating diagnosis. The future queen has always leaned very heavily on her mother for emotional support and encouragement, and never more so than now.”

Andersen added: “I think the King in particular appreciates how important a role Carole Middleton plays in keeping her daughter’s spirits up at this crucial time.”

While the royal family isn’t worried about the Middletons’ debt, a source told Us this week that the collapse of Party Pieces has been “devastating” for Carole and Michael, 74, who are also parents to Pippa and James Middleton .

“Carole is desperately trying to keep Catherine fully focused on her recovery,” the insider said. “It’s a very worrying time for the family but they are not looking for any assistance from their children and don’t want them to worry.”

Kate has children of her own to think of as she undergoes chemotherapy: Prince George, 10, Princess Charlotte, 8, and Prince Louis, 5, whom she shares with husband Prince William . While announcing her diagnosis via Instagram video last month, Kate explained that she took her time sharing the news for the sake of her kids.

“It has taken us time to explain everything to George, Charlotte and Louis in a way that’s appropriate for them, and to reassure them that I’m going to be OK,” she explained.

Despite the formation of the EAG, Kishor questioned its efficacy, raising doubts about its tangible accomplishments. He underscored the Congress's struggle to adapt to contemporary political dynamics, expressing skepticism about its ability to regain prominence.

Contrary to speculation, Kishor dismissed the likelihood of the AAP overshadowing the Congress and replicating its Delhi model in other states. He attributed this to the AAP's lack of ideological and institutional grounding, which he views as a fundamental weakness.

Addressing the BJP's criticism of "parivarwaad" (family rule) within the Congress and regional parties, Kishor acknowledged the resonance of this issue among the electorate. He argued that the era where leadership based solely on surname conferred an advantage has passed, deeming it a liability in the current political landscape.

Citing examples like Rahul Gandhi, Akhilesh Yadav, and Tejashwi Yadav, Kishor questioned the efficacy of dynastic leadership, highlighting instances where popular support failed to materialize into electoral victories. He challenged the narrative of dynastic succession, emphasizing the disparity between party acceptance and public perception of leadership.

While acknowledging the BJP's recent electoral successes, Kishor warned that the party would inevitably face pressure to accommodate family members of its leaders in positions of power. He cautioned against complacency, suggesting that the BJP would confront similar challenges related to dynasty politics in the future.

FLORIDA – The Florida Office of Insurance Regulation (OIR) announced that eight property and casualty insurers are coming to Florida following legislative reforms designed to promote market stability.

The price to insure a home in Florida remains the highest in the United States after insurance premiums rose 68% from May 2021 to May 2023.

“Florida’s insurance market continues to strengthen, showing signs recent legislation is having positive impacts to the property insurance market,” Insurance Commissioner Michael Yaworsky. “OIR remains steadfast in our efforts to stabilize Florida’s insurance market by implementing legislative reforms and recruiting more insurers to the state. We look forward to continuing this work and promoting a competitive market for policyholders.”

In 2023, the state market took a hit as Farmers Insurance announced it was ending several policies. That caused tens of thousands of customers to look for coverage elsewhere.

Companies like Orion180 Insurance Company, Manatee Insurance Exchange, and Ovation Home Insurance Exchange are starting to write home insurance policies for residents.

News4JAX Insiders gave their thoughts on how they think the new companies will impact their policies.

“I have to get new insurance with Farmers pulling out, I hope this will help stabilize and of course help lower rates across our state,” Harry Kaiserlin said.

Another Insider said they are skeptical about the impact of the companies.

“Hopefully they aren’t just popping in to profit off the higher rates and then running after the first storm,” Rex Fairholm said.

Another Insider said they don’t think much will change.

“Without the nationwide level groups like State Farm, Farmers, All State, Nationwide, Progressive, Geico, rates won’t change much,” Casie Disintoes said.

State regulators have also continued efforts to shrink Citizens Property Insurance, Florida’s property insurer of last resort, citing concerns about the financial risks of a major hurricane.

Family plans reunion and memorial party during solar eclipse

DETROIT (WXYZ) - A total solar eclipse is happening on Monday and many people are leaving where they live to find their spot in the path of totality.

One Michigan couple is doing just that and planning more than a party for the historic event.

Jim Owen says he has 170 solar eclipse glasses for his party.

He and his wife Nicki Owen dreamed of a watch party after viewing the last solar eclipse in 2017.

“It’s just it gets so dark, and everything just stops. And then like when we were in Kentucky and the light and you know it was black. Everybody’s applauding,” Nicki Owen said.

Jim Owen says it has been “awesome” planning the party.

“On the way home I said, ‘You know, we gotta see when the next one is you know?’ And got home and checked and it was you know, going through Elmore, Ohio, where I was born and raised,” Jim Owen said.

Last fall, he rented a barn for April 8 in his birthplace of Elmore, Ohio.

He invited family and all his old friends from Elmore, Ohio.

Jim Owen realized when his mother died at 98, they never did anything in her honor. His mother was a nurse at the town’s doctor’s office and he says almost everyone around town knew her.

Jim Owen has dubbed his reunion party the ‘Sara Grace Solar Memorial.’

“We’re not going to have one minute of silence. We’re going to have three minutes of darkness,” he said.

He wants all his attendees to know that this will not be a solemn occasion.

“This is the costume and here is the velvet bow tie that goes with it,” he said.

Jim Owen even got arts and crafts for the kids to make viewing boxes. He has spent every day for the last four months organizing this party.

Jim Owens expects to have about 80 people at the reunion and memorial solar eclipse party on Monday.
