Pearson’s science-based targets include a goal to achieve an absolute reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 50% in the next 10 years against a 2018 baseline

Pearson has this week committed to reaching net-zero emissions by 2030. The company will focus on carbon reductions, namely though the purchase of renewables to help meet this goal and will use offsets in areas it feels “unable” to reduce emissions currently.

The crux of the commitment is built on science-based targets. Last year, Pearson had targets to halve its operational and value chain emissions by 2030 approved by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi).

Pearson’s science-based targets include a goal to achieve an absolute reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 50% in the next 10 years against a 2018 baseline. Pearson will also aim to reduce Scope 3 emissions from purchased goods and services, upstream and downstream transportation and the use and end-of-life of sold products by 50% in the same timeframe.

Those targets were set after the company surpassed its 2020 targets to reduce emissions by 50% against a 2009 baseline and reduce energy use in its buildings on an absolute basis by 50% against a 2013 baseline. Pearson ended up delivering a 62% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and a 55% reduction in building energy use. In 2019, Pearson procured 97% of its electricity needs from renewable sources.

In addition to the net-zero commitment, the company has this week pledged to ensure that 100% of its paper products will be Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified by 2025. Currently, 96% of UK-bases purchasing meets this requirement, compared to 64% globally.

All products and packaging will be “widely recycled or covered by a take-back programme” in the same time frame.

The new sustainability commitments are accompanied by critical social pledges.

The company strategy notes that Pearson is “committed to representation at management levels of the company that reflects the racial, ethnic and gender diversity of the geographies where we operate”. This ambition has been set for 2025 while a target to source £500m from suppliers who are “diverse accredited” is set for 2030.

4.1)   By 2030, ensure that all girls and boys complete free, equitable and quality primary and secondary education leading to relevant and effective learning outcomes

Camfed is an international non-profit organization tackling poverty and inequality by supporting girls to go to school and succeed, and empowering young women to step up as leaders of change.  Pearson  partnered with Camfed on a project funded by the UK Department of International Development (DFID), and supported by relevant national Ministries of Education, to transform educational opportunities and outcomes for girls from low-income communities in Zimbabwe and Tanzania. Leveraging one of the company’s core areas of expertise, Pearson supported Camfed to develop learning resources, with input from students, that are gender-sensitive and relevant to young people’s experiences, future employability, and success. The My Better World curriculum and workbook help students to build self-knowledge, discover their talents, build resilience, select role models, set goals, and learn how to achieve them. Graduates of Camfed’s programs in the poorest rural communities are trained to become ‘Learner Guides’, who serve as young female role models for girls and boys still in school. In 2014, Pearson made a commitment to develop a BTEC – one of the world’s most sought after applied learning qualifications – tailored to the unique needs of Learner Guides. 5,000 Learner Guides will have the opportunity to achieve a BTEC, and will teach and mentor over 150,000 girls and boys, using the My Better World curriculum, to help improve their attendance, retention, and learning at secondary school – creating a virtuous cycle of learning and empowerment. The Camfed Learner Guide Program supported by our partnership has so far reached more than 60,744 vulnerable girls in Zimbabwe and Tanzania to enroll in secondary school and empowered over 400,000 girls and boys to improve their educational experience and learning outcomes.

4.5)   By 2030, eliminate gender disparities in education and ensure equal access to all levels of education and vocational training for the vulnerable, including persons with disabilities, indigenous peoples and children in vulnerable situations

Pearson's 'Every Child Learning' partnership with Save the Children.  Through Pearson’s Every Child Learning partnership , they are funding Save the Children, an international non-profit organization helping children in need around the world, to establish two informal education centers in Amman, Jordan. These centers expect to support 1,400 Syrian refugees and host community children aged between 5 and 13 years old to integrate into the formal education system. Pearson is also investing £1 million in the co-creation of new product and program solutions to improve the quality of education for refugee and host community children in Jordan. The ambition is that solutions can be adapted, scaled, and replicated in other emergency and conflict-affected contexts. In 2015,Pearson conducted in-depth field research in Jordan to understand how Syrian and Jordanian families engage with educational resources in times of conflict-affected transition. The research will provide insights into our solutions development process, helping ensure that any intervention we develop is beneficial and relevant to the unique needs of Syrian refugee and host community children.

Pearson Aligns Sustainability Plan with the SDGs

pearson sustainable business plan 2030

13 Jul 2016

Photo by Hannah Maule-Ffinch/Save the Children

Adopted in September 2015, the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) have ushered in a new set of principles to guide the public, private , and civil society sectors’ commitment to positively impact communities and the world at large. GBC-Education founding member Pearson has released its 2015 Sustainability Report illustrating how it is addressing education inequality on a global scale, and aligning with the SDGs.

After assessing the seventeen SDGs, Pearson selected three that were best aligned with and most important to its core business capabilities:

Goal 4 – Quality Education Goal 8 – Decent Work and Economic Growth Goal 10 – Reduce Inequalities

Pearson’s sustainability report is reflective of a larger conversation on how the private sector can meaningfully align their social responsibility practices with the SDGs, thereby supporting the UN’s work to end global poverty, combat inequality and injustice, protect human rights, and create a peaceful world.

“Our new report identifies the areas where we think our business can make the most transformative impacts on society,” says Amanda Gardiner, Vice President of Sustainability & Social Innovation at Pearson.

For Pearson specifically, its sustainability strategy is focused around three pillars:

Be a Trusted Partner – Pearson is committed to operating responsibly, ethically, and transparently in order to maintain stakeholder trust and earn a license to operate in communities around the world

Reach More Learners – Pearson has identified a long-term growth objective to reach 200 million learners annually by 2025 – more than doubling its current reach. This will require both innovation and collaboration to ensure its products are accessible, affordable, and effective, and that its reaching the people who need education most. Partnerships with Save the Children to support refugee education and with Camfed to support girls’ education are two examples of where the company is already leading.

Shape the Future of Education – Pearson will continue to evolve its products and services and invest in technology to remain at the forefront of the fast-changing education sector and provide the best outcomes for learners. Through participation in multi-stakeholder forums, like GBC-Education, the company contributes to the global education agenda and helps to bridge the equality gaps in education around the world.

Pearson’s three-pronged sustainability plan is a critical part of a greater effort to integrate sustainability more closely with business strategy and with the SDGs. Pearson will continue to improve and build out its sustainability plan, and to work collectively with GBC-Education and the wider business community to accelerate progress in delivering quality education for all of the world’s children and youth.

Pearson Releases 2018 Sustainability Report

  • May 29, 2019
  • Midland Paper Clips
  • Environmental News

Pearson, the world’s learning company, today publishes its 2018 Sustainability Report, demonstrating ongoing progress in integrating social and environmental issues across the business and advancing equity in education.

A key element of Pearson’s business strategy is to help improve employability prospects through providing products and services that drive better learning outcomes. As sustainability is increasingly integrated into Pearson’s core business, employability for underserved groups and supporting sustainability skills are becoming areas of focus.

An example of this in practice in 2018 is our work with 225 US institutions, including community colleges, who used Pearson’s GED College Ready score level to help their students progress to the next level of their education, sometimes without placement tests or developmental courses. This is significant because it reduces barriers for students without a high school diploma to gain access to the next level of education, saves time by demonstrating mastery of certain topics, and improves their future employability prospects.

“Our sustainability work is making an impact on the learners who need education the most,” said Deirdre Latour, Chief Corporate Affairs Officer at Pearson. “From our innovations to reach underserved groups and our qualifications preparing learners for jobs, we are working hard to help change lives.”

Other select 2018 highlights from across the business include: Continuing our Save the Children partnership providing education to children who need it the most: Our recent focus has been on creating digital tools to enable learning to continue in a humanitarian crisis. 28,000 users have downloaded our math app, designed in collaboration with refugee children. Extending our BTEC qualifications – used by millions of learners in the UK – to underserved communities in Africa through our partnership with CAMFED: We awarded 1,800+ BTEC qualifications to young women in Ghana, Malawi, Tanzania, and Zimbabwe. Selected nine new ventures as part of Tomorrow’s Markets Incubator, Pearson’s innovation and social impact programme that empowers our own people within Pearson to innovate and help meet the need for access to education in underserved communities.

We also made progress across a range of sustainability metrics including publishing our first human rights statement; training 5,000 employees on our editorial policy for inclusive and appropriate content; continuing our work to significantly reduce our energy consumption; continuing to invest in local communities – with £5.7m going to good causes; and continuing to support mental health and resilience for our employees through Pearson WELL.

Through this work Pearson continued to make progress against its 2020 Sustainability Plan which is designed to advance the UN Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs), with a focus on: Reaching more learners by removing barriers to education. Shaping the future of learning by building skills that foster employability and inclusive economic growth. Being a trusted partner to learners, educators, suppliers, and communities by operating responsibly, creating value for society, and protecting the environment.

The report, which covers 1 January – 31 December 2018, is in accordance with the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) Standards. Pearson is a founding signatory to the United Nations Global Compact, and this report also represents its Communication on Progress and outlines its contributions to the UN SDGs.
