10 Activities for Describing 3D Shapes in Kindergarten

' src=

Describing 3D shapes in kindergarten is now an expectation as it is a key geometry standard. This standard focuses on four main 3D shapes:

Students should be able to describe the faces, vertices, and edges of each shape.

10 Activities for Describing 3d Shapes in Kindergarten - These are totally easy enough to plug into our routine

So, what are some 3D shapes activities for kindergarten and resources for practicing this standard?

Let’s dive in!

3D shapes in kindergarten

Look at the sequence of how we’ve taught shapes so far:

  • First quarter we had to master the name of 2D shapes .
  • Second quarter we gained mastery over the descriptions of those shapes (circle, triangle, rectangle, hexagon and square).
  • This third quarter we are identifying 3D shapes …

Can you guess what we’re working towards for next quarter?

If you tracked the logic, then you’re right. We’re going to be 3D shape description experts .

I’ve been scoping out plans to incorporate this standard into little bits of our day so that way I can get in a lot of repetition without spending a lot of time practicing these standards:

  • K.G.1.d. Identify and name the following shapes: cubes, cones, cylinders, and spheres
  • K.G.3.b. Identify shapes as three-dimensional and solid.
  • K.G.4.b. Describe three-dimensional shapes to identify their various attributes including faces and edges.

Activities and resources

Here are some of my favorite resources that can do just that – work on this standard in little portions so students can master it – without spending lots of time on it.

How to explain 3D shapes to kindergarten

1. Shape Description Chants – These chants are designed to be quick, familiar songs that teach. I love using songs to help students both recall important information and to practice.

These should help key in on the most important descriptions for each shape including the faces and vertices (corners). Download here [terms of use]

If we’re talking about teaching 3D shapes kindergarten -style, then using music is a must!

3D Shape Bingo for Kindergarten (Free download) with both real world examples and basic 3D shapes

2.  Shape Identification or Description Bingo – This classic game features both real-world examples and simple 3D shapes to practice identifying or describing shapes.

The shapes are also rotated since students are supposed to be able to identify them no matter the orientation.

3. 3D Shapes That I Know Video – You’ll appreciate the 3 minutes you spend watching this just a few times with your kinders.

The catchy tune will have this embedded in their minds to help them recall the names but also be able to compare it to real-world examples.

This 3D shapes kindergarten video is the perfect introduction to comparing why things that are all shaped like a cone have the same qualities (1 curved face… 1 flat circle face).

Hide pirate treasure under 3D shapes game

4. Hide-n-Seek Pirate Treasure – Turn this identification game into a describing game by hiding the treasure under a 3D shape card. Students call out a shape description in order to peek underneath.

The game continues until the pirate treasure chest has been found. Integrate this into your calendar time and give 2 chances a day to make quick, fun practice.

3D Shapes Poem for Kindergarten Real World Objects

5. Poetry – Copy this poem onto pocket strips and work on connecting the real-world objects to the 3D shape names.

This names the main  3D shapes for kindergarten .

3d shapes worksheet kindergarten

6. 3D Fluency Mat – This mat is designed to work with small groups. I use a guided math approach to teach my kinders, so this is a warm-up activity for us.

It is quick to fit in and gives the right amount of repetition.

Turn it into an activity by describing a shape and the first one to identify/cover it gets to describe another shape and the play continues on.

KindergartenWorks :: 10 Activities for Describing 3D Shapes in Kindergarten (K.G.3)

7. Real Object Sort – This free download includes picture cards of real-world objects that students can sort into shape groupings.

It works great for categorizing and explaining why and what features the objects all have in common.

Laminate these cards and have students trace the 3D shape outline with wikki sticks to make it more interactive.

3D Shape Printable Book

8. 3D Shape Booklet – Have the students create their own booklet by finding objects in the classroom (like a hunt) that are the same 3D shape.

You can always increase the level of describing by using colors to identify the types of faces, markers to trace the shape’s edges and glue on split peas to show the vertices (that are visible).

10 Activities for Describing 3D Shapes in Kindergarten (K.G.3)

9. 3D Sorting Cards / Posters – These cards and posters make help you create your own activity or give your students real-world objects to sort.

This one features photographs instead of clipart (like number 7) so it may be more appealing to your students.

10 Activities for Describing 3D Shapes in Kindergarten (K.G.3)

10. Eating 3D Shapes – Here are two ways that you could use foods:

Find any food is at the Dollar Tree that has the right 3D shape. Think: cylinder-shaped gum, cone-shaped Bugels, sphere-shaped cheese balls and cube-shaped caramels. Now, combine taste-testing with the booklet mentioned in number 8 of this list and have students draw or take photos for them to include.

Having all students explore how their shapes will move is definitely an activity to introduce why certain shapes will move the same way … For example, will all shapes with a curved face roll? Will they all slide? Why? Create an anchor chart of your findings to help make everything stick!

There you have it – ten activities that you can use to practice describing shapes in kindergarten. I hope this collection will help you feel prepared and help you teach.

If you’re looking for a way to explain what the difference between 2D and 3D shapes are you should check out how to explain 3D shapes to kindergarten.

These are the best ideas I have found so far for my daughters geometry lesson. We will be doing most of them this week. I wanted to thank you for all of your hard work and ideas. I follow you on pinterest and I have used many of them in homeschooling my daughter who is in Kindergarten this year. I have found you to be an incredible resource. Thank you!!

Ok. My daughter is working on sorting 3d shapes by surface type. What’s the best way to explain that??

I’m assuming by “surface type” you’re referring to the types of faces? I found that the best way to learn that concept is to see what the shapes are capable of. We create a chart as a class to see if the shapes would roll, stack, or slide. Reminds me of this one: http://rainbowswithinreach.blogspot.com/2013/06/anchor-charts-organize-your-collection.html . Exploring if each shape could do these things led us to discuss what features (the curved or flat faces) allowed such actions to happen. It made the vocabulary stick and students could more easily see the shapes that went together based on their face types. I hope that can help! – Leslie

Hi there! I was looking at this post on ways to teach 2D and 3D shapes, and for the very first resource, I see you have some songs/chants with the name of the song/tune on the side. I can’t for the life of me make these songs/chants go with the songs??? (they won’t fit) —-am I doing something wrong? Any suggestions? I look forward to hearing from you. Thanks

Hi Pam, Well… I’m not sure how to explain how they fit other than I do sing some of the parts pretty fast. I tried to put each phrase on one line to help make it match. But the sphere song for example only covers the first few lines of 3 little kittens since it’s so short! Some day I’d love to turn them into a video for kinders… but I have more projects in the pipeline that come first. – Leslie

Ok, thanks for your prompt reply. One more question- for #7, Real Object Sort, (for 3D shapes), it takes me to scribd, which I think I have to have a membership. Is there another way to get that particular one? Thanks again! Pam

Hi Pam, You’ll have to ask the owner. Sorry!

You’re very welcome! – Leslie

I had already started this unit with the same video before finding your page! Such great ideas, all of them. I have a feeling the real life object & card sorting activities, the chant, and the food ones will work well but we will find out soon enough haha!

Thanks for sharing Veronica – and welcome! – Leslie

3D Shapes worksheets and activities for kindergarten

Hi everyone! Welcome to another fun and educational kindergarten resource from MathSkills4kids about solid shapes worksheets and activities. Today we invite all parents and teachers to explore and use our 3D Shapes worksheets and activities to teach kindergarteners about the names and properties of different 3D shapes.

3D shapes differ from 2D shapes because they have depth and can be seen from different angles. They are also called solid shapes because they take up space and can be held in your hands.

However, these solid shapes printable worksheets and activities will help them visualize what 3D shapes look like in the world around them.

Are you ready to explore the wonderful world of 3D shapes? Let's get started!

What are 3D Shapes? Learn the names and properties of different 3D shapes with fun examples and pictures.

To fully understand what 3D shapes are , we must learn their names and properties . In this light, we will design different 3D shapes with fun examples and pictures for kids to kick-start learning about solid shapes excitingly.

Here are some examples:

  • Cube : A cube has six square faces that are all the same size. It looks like a dice or a Rubik's cube. It has 12 edges and 8 vertices (corners).
  • Sphere : A sphere has no faces, edges, or vertices. It is perfectly round and smooth. It looks like a ball or a planet.
  • Cylinder : A cylinder has two circular faces parallel to each other. It also has one curved face that connects them. It looks like a can or a roll of paper towels.
  • Cone : A cone has one circular face and one curved face that comes to a point. It looks like an ice cream cone or a party hat.
  • Pyramid : A pyramid has one polygon (a shape with many sides) as its base and triangular

faces that meet at a point. It looks like the pyramids in Egypt or a tent.

There are many more 3D shapes, but these are some of the most common ones. Each 3D shape has its own properties, such as how many faces, edges, and vertices it has.

These properties will help us identify and describe 3D shapes easily. For example, we can say that a cube has six faces, 12 edges, and eight vertices, while a sphere has none of these.

3D Shapes worksheets and activities for kindergarten

Let's make 3D shapes!

Use everyday objects like clay, toothpicks, straws, and cardboard to create or make your own 3D shapes .

Now that we know some names and properties of 3D shapes let's try to make some of our own! You can use any materials at home or in the classroom, such as clay, toothpicks, straws, cardboard, paper, tape, glue, etc.

Here are some ideas:

  • To make a cube , you can use six square pieces of cardboard and tape them together to form a box. You can also use clay to make six balls and stick them together with toothpicks to make the edges.
  • To make a sphere , you can use clay to roll a ball with your hands. You can also use paper to make a circle and cut out a wedge-shaped piece. Then tape the edges together to form a cone and crumple it into a ball.
  • To make a cylinder , you can use paper to make a rectangle and roll it into a tube. Then tape or glue the ends together. You can also use clay to make two circles and a long snake-like shape. Then wrap the snake around one circle and attach it to the other circle.
  • To make a cone , you can use paper to make a circle and cut out a wedge-shaped piece. Then tape or glue the edges together to form a cone. You can also use clay to make a circle and a triangle. Then stick the triangle on top of the circle with toothpicks.
  • To make a pyramid , you can use paper to make a square and four triangles. Then tape or glue them together to form a pyramid.

You can also use clay to make a polygon (such as a square or a pentagon) and four triangles. Then stick the triangles on the sides of the polygon with toothpicks.

You can also try to make other 3D shapes using different materials and methods. Be creative and have fun!

3D Shape sort and match

To practice what we learned about the 3D shapes’ names and properties, let's play the 3D Shape sort and match game and have fun.

You will need scissors, glue, and the printable 3D shape cards that you can download from this link: https://www.sparklebox.co.uk/maths/shape-space-measures/shapes/3d.html .

  • First, cut out the cards along the dotted lines. You should have 15 cards in total: five cards with names of 3D shapes (cube, sphere, cylinder, cone, pyramid), five cards with pictures of 3D shapes (one for each name), and five cards with descriptions of 3D shapes (one for each name).
  • Next, sort the cards into three groups: names, pictures, and descriptions. You can use different piles or containers to separate them.
  • Then, match each card from one group to its corresponding card from another group. For example, match the card with the name "cube" to the card with the picture of a cube and the card with the description of a cube.
  • Finally, you can check your answers by looking at this answer key.

You can also play this game with a partner or in teams. Take turns picking one card from each group and see if you can find its match before your opponent does.

3D Shape Puzzles

The 3D Shape Puzzle is a fun and exciting game where you can learn about different 3D shapes and how they look in real life. You will see some pieces of 3D shapes on the pieces of the puzzle, such as cubes, spheres, cones, cylinders, and pyramids.

You will also see some pictures of real-life objects that have the same shape as the pieces.

For example, a dice is a cube, a ball is a sphere, an ice cream cone is a cone, a can is a cylinder, and a pyramid is a pyramid. Your task is to match the pieces of the 3D shapes with the pictures of real-life objects.

Try to solve all the puzzles as fast as you can and have fun!

3D Shape Hunt

The 3D Shape Hunt game is another way to practice recognizing 3D shapes. Here, you need to go on a scavenger hunt around your home or classroom and find as many examples as you can.

You will need paper, a pencil, crayons or markers, and this printable table that you can download from this link: https://www.pebblego.com/sites/default/files/files/3D%20Shape%20Hunt.pdf .

  • First, print out the table or draw your own on paper. The table has five columns: name of shape, number of faces, number of edges, number of vertices (corners), example found.
  • Next, look around your home or classroom for objects that have 3D shapes. For example, you might find a cube in a dice or a Rubik's cube, a sphere in a ball or an orange, a cylinder in a can or a bottle, a cone in an ice cream cone or a traffic cone, a pyramid in an eraser or an origami model.
  • Then, record your findings in the table by writing down the name of the shape, the number of faces, the number of edges, the number of vertices, and an example that you found.
  • Finally, draw each shape that you found on paper using crayons or markers. You can also label each shape with its name.

You can compare your results with your friends or family members and see who found more examples of each shape.

Today I’m sharing two worksheets to help kids explore 3D shapes. Let’s dive in!

3D Shape Worksheets

Download these free 3D shape worksheets!

The first worksheet asks kids to count faces, edges, and vertices on each shape.

First, let’s look at some definitions.

face – any of the flat surfaces of a solid object

edge – a line segment where two faces meet

vertex – a point where two or more lines meet

I strongly recommend having 3D shape manipulatives so your students can study them as they work. If you buy two of this set , you should have enough for 20 students. If you’re working with an individual student, you could buy the foam shapes that we used .

Let’s take a rectangular prism.

You can see that it has 6 faces. Each is shaped like a rectangle. It also has 12 edges and 8 vertices.

We examined each shape . I helped my Six count the faces, edges, and vertices.

He recorded them on the worksheet.

For the second worksheet, we examined whether the shapes could roll, stack or slide.

He colored the happy or sad face after he experimented with each figure.

Some were a little tricky, so he added some notes on his worksheet. For example, the bottom of the cone stacks, but not the top. The same is true of the pyramid.

Hi, I am big fan of your activities and printable. Thanks for your efforts and sharing ! I got a question. All the shapes can slide right (in roll, stack , slide) ? Thanks !

April 10, 2017 at 5:07 am

Hello! Shapes can slide if they can move on their base without turning or rolling. So all shapes can slide EXCEPT the sphere.

April 10, 2017 at 8:13 am

ok, Thank you so much for the clarification !!

I really appreciate and trust your free printables – thank you so much! I am a great grandmother looking after (guardian to) her 5 year old great grandson. He has been diagnosed with O.D.D. and Severe Anxiety so has a hard time in Kindergarten. Printing your resources has helped me to explain and guide him through the items he has problems understanding in the school setting when being inundated with too many sensory situations that cause him to shut down. I am hoping with a loving and quiet environment at home that he will, with the additional knowledge you and I are providing him, start to make larger strides in his school work and not feel the pressure so much. I have many years to look forward to getting your assistance for this bright, loving boy. Thanks again

Thank you so much for sharing your story with me, Edie! I’m so glad you can use my resources as you teach your great grandson. Blessings to you both!

Thank you Thank You thank you for all the freebies that you post. I really and truly appreciate them. I know what hard work goes into them, I make so many of my own . But there are those times where you are just brain dead and don’t know what to think but i know where to turn to, THE MEASURED MOM!!

Thank again, a very appreciated teacher!!

I have been so excited about your teaching resources!! I am a tutor for Tier 2 and 3 students at my school and have had some difficulty finding adequate resources to use with all the different academic levels and learning styles for the kids and your website has helped me our tremendously!! As you know teachers don’t make a whole lot of income so I am so appreciative that your printables are free to use and are so effective in teaching my students. Thanks so much for all that you do!!

Yay – I’m so glad to hear that my materials are working for your students, MarCella!

Engaging 3D Shape Activities for Kindergarten

After learning about basic two-dimensional shapes , it can be tricky for young learners to think about three-dimensional shapes!  It often takes multiple exposures to 3D shapes for students to master the names and attributes. These fun 3D shape activities for kindergarten are perfect for adding some variety to your math practice.  You can use these activities to keep your students engaged in learning about 3D shapes!

Kindergarten 3D Shape Activities

3D Shape Activities for Kindergarten

3d shape posters.

As students learn about each individual 3D shape, you can have the information displayed on colorful 3D shape posters! Students will learn about the corners (or vertices) and faces of each shape, along with the name of the 3D shape. You can keep these posters on display throughout your 3D shapes unit so students can reference them like an anchor chart.

2 size options for each shape - cube

3D Shape Hunt

After learning about an individual 3D shape, they can complete a fun shape hunt!  Students will be given a worksheet that has the name of one 3D shape, along with several different pictures of real-life items.  Some of these items will be the correct shape and others will not.  Students will examine the pictures and color the ones that are the correct shape.

3D shape hunt worksheet for cube

Sorting 3D Shapes

One way to help students understand each 3D shape is for them to explore non-examples of the shape. You can start with a pocket chart sorting activity that can be completed as a class, during small group instruction, or even explored with partners or independently during math centers.  Students will take turns choosing a card and will decide whether or not the shape on the card is the focus 3D shape.

Cone shape sort cards in a pocket chart

After sorting 3D shapes on a pocket chart, students can then turn their attention to sorting 3D shapes on a written activity.  Students will color, cut, and paste a variety of shapes into the correct column.  This is a great way for students to practice recognizing individual 3D shapes!

Is it a sphere? 3d shape sort

All About 3D Shapes

Another fun way for students to apply their knowledge of a 3D shape is to complete a worksheet that summarizes the shape name and attributes.  Students can practice tracing and writing the shape name, then draw a picture that shows a real-life object of that same shape.  They can also complete a sentence frame to describe their object.  Finally, your class can write how many faces and vertices are on the shape.  This is a great activity to help reinforce shape names and attributes.

Cube 3D shape worksheet

3D Shape Hat

A great way to get students talking about 3D shapes is to have them wear a shape hat.  Without fail, when a kindergarten student walks the halls or heads to the bus wearing a 3D shape hat, someone will ask them what’s on their head. Your student will be able to practice math vocabulary as they explain everything on the fun hat they created!

The front of a cone hat

Each hat comes with a set of objects with examples and non-examples of the 3D shape.  Students will determine which picture represents the 3D shape and glue those pictures on the band of the hat. There is also space for the student to write how many faces and vertices the shape has. Plus, students can also trace the 3D shape and shape name on the band of the hat.

3D Shape Flip Book

After your class has had plenty of time to learn individual 3D shape names and attributes, they’ll be ready to put their knowledge together to complete fun activities!  The first is a 3D shape flip book.  After coloring all of the 3D shapes, students will paste the real-world example of each 3D shape under the flap.  There will also be room to write the number of faces and vertices under each flap.

3D shape flip book activity

Real World 3D Shapes

Your students will love to complete their own mini readers about real-world 3D shapes!  On each page, students will glue the correct picture of the 3D shape at the top of the page, then draw a real-world object that matches the shape.  There is also a sentence frame for students to complete a sentence about each real-world 3D shape!

Cone page of a printable reader

3D Shapes Reader

Another fun printable book that students can complete is this 3D shapes reader.  Each page has a line where students can write the name of the pictured shape.  Students can also write the number of vertices and faces on each page.  The students in your class will be so excited to take this reader home to share with their families!

Cylinder page of a 3D shape reader

Fishing for 3D Shapes

A fun activity that helps students review everything they’ve learned about 3D shapes is this fishing game! Simply put paper clips on a set of 3D shape picture cards.  After using a magnetic clip to “fish” for a card, students will add the picture to the correct column based on its shape. As they place the card in the correct column, they can practice saying the shape name.  This is a great way to help students remember that important math vocabulary!

Printable 3D Shape Activities for Kindergarten

All of the activities pictured above can be found in my set of printable 3D shape activities for kindergarten .  These hands-on activities will encourage your young learners to learn 3D shape names and attributes for cube, cone, cylinder, and sphere.  After completing these activities, your students will be able to recognize and identify the 3D shapes all around them!  These activities include options for both “vertices” or “corners” depending on the vocabulary you use in your curriculum.

If you’d like to take a closer look at everything included in this resource, you can find it in the A Spoonful of Learning shop or on TPT .
