Dodgers Roster: DJ Peters Designated For Assignment

DJ Peters, 2021 Spring Training

Dave Roberts: Dodgers ‘Outplayed’ By Giants In Last Two Series

Matthew moreno.

The Los Angeles Dodgers designated DJ Peters for assignment in order to add Danny Duffy to their 40-man roster after he was acquired from the Kansas City Royals in exchange for a player to be named later.

It was a bit of a surprise considering Peters was selected by the Dodgers in the fourth round of the 2016 MLB Draft. Though, the power-hitting outfielder has been plagued by struggles to avoid high strikeout numbers.

Peters has continued to work on improving in that area, and Dodgers manager Dave Roberts was optimistic there would be strides made this year after seeing him in Spring Training.

“For me, this is as good of at-bat quality as I’ve seen from him,” Roberts said during camp. “So now it’s about continuing to do that and then getting the opportunity. I think this year, whether it’s early or whenever it is, I think this will be the year DJ gets to be a big leaguer and get some service time. He’s worked really hard.”

Peters went on to make his MLB debut on April 23 but struggled in limited opportunities. He hit .192 over 18 games (seven starts) across three stints in the Majors.

Although the Glendora, California native struggled at the plate, he relished in making his debut and later hitting a first career home run at Dodger Stadium .

“To get it here at Dodger Stadium was surreal. In order to do it against the team in orange and black is that much better,” Peters said.

In five Minor League seasons, he hit .266 with 96 homers and 290 RBI. Peters could remain with the Dodgers organization if going unclaimed on waivers, but it’s presumed a team will look to add him.

Dodgers trade for Scherzer, Turner

Hours after it appeared the Washington Nationals were on the verge of trading Max Scherzer, the Dodgers not only re-entered the picture for the future Hall of Famer but struck a deal to acquire Trea Turner as well.

Scherzer waived his no-trade clause as a player with 10-and-5 rights in order to facilitate the deal.

DJ Peters and his ‘alligator arms’ are starting to take advantage of an opportunity with the Rangers

CLEVELAND, OH - AUGUST 24: DJ Peters #38 of the Texas Rangers hits a three-run home run off of Bryan Shaw of the Cleveland Indians in the ninth inning at Progressive Field on August 24, 2021 in Cleveland, Ohio. The Rangers defeated the Indians 7-3. (Photo by Ron Schwane/Getty Images)

Let’s start with the obvious. Yes, DJ Peters is hitting just .186 for the season, and no, he has not yet solidified a spot in the 2022 Opening Day lineup. And yes, he had 14 strikeouts in 34 big-league appearances and an OPS of just .691 this season at Triple-A Oklahoma City before being designated for assignment by the Dodgers on July 29 (subsequently allowing the Rangers to acquire him for the paltry sum total of $50,000). This is not a story about the latest thrilling prospect to push the rebuild one more step toward future glory.

When you consider the low price, it makes it a bit remarkable that since his arrival in Arlington, Peters leads the team in home runs (7) and RBI (18) and has played some pretty eyebrow-raising defense. When you’re on pace for more than 100 losses, the risk-reward scale favors waiver claims of 25-year-old fourth-round draft picks from 2016 with loud tools — no matter how many holes might exist in their swing. If all else fails, you could just non-tender the player after the year. It’s not like they’re going to be the reason you miss the postseason, right?

But … what if you do solve a problem? And what if the solution is something as simple as “alligator arms”?

Rangers manager Chris Woodward can recall how he responded when he heard that Peters was available on the waiver wire. As a member of the Dodgers coaching staff, he had worked with Peters before taking the Rangers job in advance of the 2019 season.

“Yeah, no, I definitely remember,” Woodward said earlier this month. “I said, ‘Get him.’ I made it pretty loud. Pound-the-table kind of thing. ‘Get this guy if we’ve got a chance.’ … I did not think we were going to get him, to be honest with you, because there were two teams ahead of us at the time (on the waiver priority list). But somehow we got him and I’m excited.”

Woodward was not the only former member of the Dodgers coaching staff to give an endorsement of Peters. Hitting coach Luis Ortiz also had a few reasons why he gave his blessing for the waiver claim, and they extended beyond just the tools and talent.

“Every day is like Opening Day for him,” Ortiz said of Peters’ enthusiasm. “(He has a) growth mindset: never thinks he’s a finished product, always trying to get better. (He’s) so coachable — an amazing kid, teammate. I mean, if we can tap into that potential and that talent? Oooh, watch it.”

Peters had a slow start in Texas. For the first 16 games, he hit .155/.177/.345 (.522 OPS) with 26 strikeouts in 58 at-bats. But his attitude never wavered.

“The one thing about DJ is he’s relentless, man,” Woodward said. “I guess Louie called him a Labrador retriever. He just constantly wants to please you and wants to learn and you know, he just tail’s wagging, his tongue’s out the whole time. This kid is relentless.”

Losing seasons are long and arduous, providing very little in the way of watchable baseball. Nobody likes losing seasons. But they do contain a few small benefits. One of them is the ability to let a player with Peters’ raw talent endure a stretch like the one he had early on without the pressure of a pennant race.

With the team in Cleveland, Peters went to the plate to face Sam Hentges with one out and runners on second and third. Hentges, a left-handed pitcher, had left-handed hitter Nathaniel Lowe awaiting him in the on-deck circle. Peters swung at a slider and hit it back to the pitcher, leaving the runners in their place. When he returned to the dugout, he discussed the at-bat with Woodward, saying the outcome wasn’t what he hoped. But he had done what he had been instructed to do: stick to his game plan. He was looking for a fastball and didn’t get it.

“What is the likelihood of Hentges — with a lefty on deck — throwing you a fastball down the middle?” Woodward asked Peters. “If you were him, would you throw you a fastball down the middle?”

“Absolutely not,” Peters answered.

“So there you go,” Woodward concluded. “You were ready to hit a fastball, so you stuck to your game plan, but maybe the plan should have been to sit soft, for a pitcher to get that ball to the middle of the field.”

“Yeah,” Peters agreed. “If I was on slider right there, I’d probably (have) hit a three-run homer.”

Then, facing Nick Wittgren to lead off the eighth inning, Peters hit an opposite-field home run.

Losing seasons aren’t good for much, but they’re unparalleled in their generosity with learning experiences.

“Getting those consistent at-bats is huge,” Peters said of the experience thus far. “Not only for development but … in order to perform at the big-league level, I think the best way to do that is to get everyday at-bats. Woody has given me that opportunity and this amazing organization, so (I) definitely want to run away with it. When I come back in — whether it’s good at-bat, bad at-bat, home run, strikeout, whatever it may be — if I stick to my plan throughout the long run, I know that’s gonna pan out. Woody and I have dialogue throughout every game, every single at-bat, hitting coaches as well. I want to come back and be nitpicky on myself. Because I know that if I do that, over a course of a long career, it’s going to pan out.”

It’s not just the difference in approach that has helped Peters. One thing Ortiz has tried to communicate to the outfielder is that as a tall guy (Peters is listed at 6 feet, 6 inches) with long limbs — “big levers,” as they call it — he is vulnerable to pitches on the inside part of the plate. There are a number of ways to say that: shorten the path to the ball, shorten up your swing, stay inside the ball . But the one that has resonated with Peters is a bit more evocative.

“We talked about getting his arm almost like having ‘alligator arms,'” Ortiz said.”Putting him in a good position to swing from, and then be able to be as short as possible to contact.”

It’s always interesting to hear the student reinterpret the teacher’s lesson, so I asked Peters what that meant to him.

“Obviously, alligators have little arms,” Peters said. “I don’t have little arms, so I want to just keep them as close and as compact as I can … I don’t want to extend my arms too early. That’s when you start ‘casting,’ that’s when you start getting big, start dropping the bat. So at impact, I want to feel like (I have) alligator arms, and then gorilla arms once I extend out towards the field. I don’t want (the movement) to happen back towards the catcher, I want it to happen out towards center field.”

In the 10 games leading up to Wednesday’s series finale against the Rockies , Peters has hit .250/.295/.575 (.870 OPS) with 11 strikeouts in 40 at-bats. Not All-Star numbers, but not bad for a waiver-wire pickup.

Oh, right, and there’s all the other things. Peters has been known for his power — Baseball Savant lists him in the 83rd percentile for maximum exit velocity this season — and for his good athleticism, too (his sprint speed is in the 92nd percentile). But the defense has been better than advertised. Peters has made a number of highlight-reel catches in the outfield, including this tricky one:

And there was this throw:

Still not over this @8Peters throw. 🤯 pic.twitter.com/nzyv5bWPuH — Texas Rangers (@Rangers) August 22, 2021

Woodward did not mince words when asked if he was surprised by Peters’ defensive prowess: “No, not at all. I told you guys before, this guy plays harder than anybody.”

“I knew the effort was gonna be there,” Woodward said. “You just never know. Those kinds of catches don’t come around very often. I mean, he’s so tall, he’s obviously got a ton of vertical. He can run. He gets to balls pretty quickly. The play he made yesterday and the play he made today … It’s really hard on a high wall to time it just right. A lot of guys kind of shy away and play it off the wall but those two catches were really, really, really good. So I guess I am a little bit surprised, but I knew the effort was gonna be 100 miles an hour and 100 percent every time.”

“I guess being a (junior college) guy, you always play with kind of like a fire under your butt,” Peters said. “But I want to make the plays for my team, for my pitcher. And whether that’s running (into) the wall, jumping over the wall, I really don’t care — I’ll run through the wall. I love it out there.”

He’s now finally getting a chance to be where he loves. A losing season gives players such as Peters — and quite a few other rookies — an opportunity to take their lumps as they learn how to be big-league players. Not only are they getting to showcase their talents, but they’re also getting a chance to compete against the best the game has to offer.

“I think it’s special,” Peters said of the situation. “The only way to get better at playing in the big leagues is playing in the big leagues. This is an amazing opportunity for this entire organization and every player getting to step on the field every day. … If you’re facing (Cleveland’s Emmanuel) Clase two out of three games, that means they’re bringing in their elite bullpen arms. We faced Yimi (García ) and ( Ryan) Pressly , who are (Houston’s) elite bullpen arms, too. We’re facing teams that are in playoff hunts, and we’re getting to the back end of their bullpen and that is huge.”

The Rangers hope they are also seeing the beginning of some elite arms as well. Even if those are best described as “alligator arms.”

ARLINGTON — The Los Angeles Dodgers’ all-out pursuit of a second consecutive World Series title could benefit the Rangers’ long-range vision. The Dodgers keep dumping young players with upside and the Rangers keep scooping them up.

The latest is a true giant in the field: DJ Peters — no periods please for Donald Scott Peters Jr. Peters, who was acquired off waivers Monday and made his Rangers debut Tuesday in an 11-3 loss to the Los Angeles Angels, is the fourth player to appear for the Rangers this season who had been in the Dodgers organization at the end of last year. Peters, 25, had been the Dodgers’ 15th-ranked prospect, according to MLB Pipeline, when Los Angeles designated him for assignment last week to make room on the 40-man roster for pitcher Danny Duffy.

“He’s got a lot to prove and hopefully we can give him the opportunity,” Rangers manager Chris Woodward, himself a former member of the Dodgers’ organization, said Tuesday. “Just knowing him, it was a little bit shocking to me that he was available. He’s a guy I’ve targeted since I’ve been here because I knew him obviously from my days in LA. The fact that he wasn’t performing as well, maybe people were a little bit scared of him.”

Woodward wasn’t the only one who knew Peters. The Rangers drafted him in the 36th round in 2015 out of Western Nevada College, a junior college. Almost signed him, too. But he went back for another year and jumped into the top five rounds of the draft. The Rangers took infielder Charles Leblanc in the fourth round in 2016; two picks later the Dodgers selected Peters, though they signed him for nearly $200,000 less than slot.

As you would expect of a 6-6, 225-pounder, he’s put up impressive power numbers since. He hit 13 homers in rookie ball, 27 the next year in the California League, 29 at Double-A and 23 in 2019. But since the cancellation of the 2020 minor league season, Peters had lost his way. He hit .233 with a .691 OPS at Oklahoma City this season and .192 with a .767 OPS in 18 games for the Dodgers.

Oddly, he’d struggled against left-handed pitchers, hitting just .192 against them since 2019. Big right-handers should punish them.

Here’s the thing, though: If there was one thing hidden beneath the ugly numbers at Triple-A for Peters, it was his recent adjustment that seemed to allow him to better see left-handed pitchers. From July 7 until the time he was DFA’d, he saw 41 pitches from lefties, swung at 21 of them and didn’t miss any. Three weeks without a swing-and-miss. He went 5 for 12 in that stretch against lefties.

On Tuesday, against lefty Jose Suarez, he swung at the first pitch he saw and squibbed it to right field for a single. He walked in his second plate appearance. He saw 11 pitches from the lefty Tuesday and missed just one, a 92 mph fastball down and away. He did miss a slider down and in for a third strike in the ninth inning against lefty reliever Sam Selman.

“I feel like I’ve really just been me,” Peters said. “Knowing my cues and what works for me. I’m a big, strong guy. I’ve got to hit the ball forward more often. I don’t think that’s a secret. And I think I’ve been showing that off this past month over at Oklahoma City.”

“I really dove into film of where I was when everything was clicking,” he added. “And when you watch film, you kind of get to remember what was going on in your mind back then. The brain is a very useful tool. So being able to see where my hands were, where I was going into the swing and through the zone and keeping my back shoulder up or my hands up or whatever it may be, I was just using my whole body and my levers to my advantage.”

Said Woodward: “Most righties, especially big power-hitting righties, they crush lefties. That’s maybe an easier adjustment; the fact that he actually does OK against righties is kind of nice. If you hang a slider to this guy, he can do some damage on it. Typically, it’s the changeup — the arm speed of the changeup and the lack of adjustability — that usually gives righties trouble when it comes to the lefty. But that may be an easy fix.”

Back in Los Angeles, the world champion Dodgers were beginning a series Tuesday against Houston, the team to which they lost the controversial 2017 World Series. The atmosphere was thick with drama. In Arlington, it wasn’t. It allows DJ Peters a chance to jump start his career.

Dodgers' DJ Peters: Loses roster spot

Share video.

Peters was designated for assignment Thursday, Juan Toribio of MLB.com reports.

Peters managed to reach the majors for the first time this season, and he hit .192/.382/.385 across 34 plate appearances. The bigger concern was his subpar performance with Triple-A Oklahoma City, as he struck at a 28.4 percent rate and had just a 71 wRC+ in 204 plate appearances. His designation opens a spot on the 40-man roster for Danny Duffy (forearm).

dj peters designated for assignment

Rangers re-sign outfielder DJ Peters, but he’s a pitcher now

H ulking, powerful DJ Peters, who spent 52 games with the Rangers in 2021 as an athletic, but contact-challenged outfielder, is back with the organization.

He’s a pitcher now.

Peters, 28, signed a minor league deal with the club over the weekend. He does not have an invite to big league camp. Peters went Korea for the 2022 season for more lucrative opportunity, but played only 85 games for the Lotte Giants then returned to the U.S. to finish out the year with Washington’s Triple-A club in Rochester. He signed a minor league deal with Detroit last year and switched to pitching, though he never pitched above the rookie-level Florida Complex League.

Peters struggled with command, walking 27 in 21.2 innings. But he also showed a fastball with real life, averaging between 93-95 mph. He also averaged more than a strikeout per inning with 24.

Just days after trading hulking, powerful, but contact-challenged Joey Gallo to the New York Yankees in 2021, the Rangers acquired the 6-5, 225-pound Peters on a waiver claim from the Los Angeles Dodgers. They designated David Dahl for assignment to make room for him. Peters hit 12 homers with the Rangers in 197 at-bats , but batted .198 and struck out 68 times. He signed with Lotte for a reported $600,000 in December after the 2021 season.

Peters slashed .228/.299/.402/.701 with Lotte before returning to the U.S in late 2022.

MLB: Minnesota Twins at Kansas City Royals

Well, the Dodgers went out and acquired a starting pitcher. However, not the one you were expecting. The Dodgers on Thursday acquired left-handed starter Danny Duffy and cash considerations from the Royals for a player to be named later.

The news was first reported by Jeff Passan of ESPN:

The Los Angeles Dodgers are finalizing a deal to acquire left-hander Danny Duffy from the Kansas City Royals, sources tell ESPN. — Jeff Passan (@JeffPassan) July 29, 2021

At the moment, Duffy is on the injured list with a flexor strain. He previously missed a month this season with left forearm flexor strain. Duffy has 10-5 rights, as he’s spent his entire career with the Royals, but he’s expected to waive them.

The acquisition won’t cost too much at all, as the Dodgers won’t have to send away a top prospect for the rental of Duffy. The Dodgers will also acquire cash from the Royals in the deal.

Royals GM Dayton Moore explained the PTBNL situation as this: They have a group of players they will scout for the next two months. It does not sound as if Danny Duffy's availability for LA will matter at all in terms of the PTBNL return. That's why they included cash. — Alec Lewis (@alec_lewis) July 30, 2021

Duffy went to Cabrillo High School in California, so he now gets to be closer to home.

A free-agent at the end of the season, Duffy is currently having one of the best seasons of his career. He’s 4-3 with a 2.51 ERA and 3.38 FIP. His SO/9 average of 9.6 is the highest of his 11-year career.

Duffy adds depth to the Dodgers’ starting rotation and likely will slide into the bullpen in October. It’s tough to see this being the only Dodgers’ move of the deadline.

With Duffy taking up a roster spot, outfielder DJ Peters was designated for assignment to make room on the 40-man roster. Peters appeared in 18 games for the Dodgers this season, batting .192 with one homer and four RBI. In five minor league seasons with the Dodgers organization, he hit .266 with 96 homers and 290 RBI. He had been with the organization since being drafted in the fourth round of the 2016 First Year Player Draft out of Western Nevada College.

Outfielder DJ Peters was designated for assignment to make room on the 40-man roster for Duffy.

Dodgers: DJ Peters Reflects Fondly on Los Angeles in Rangers Debut

DJ Peters was one of the cooler storylines around the Dodgers this year. Given that DJ was a local kid and grew up going to game at Chavez Ravine, fans in Los Angeles loved him getting to the big leagues.

But Peters was forced into action earlier than anticipated this year after the Dodgers suffered a series of injures. When those guys all started to return or be activated, there didn’t seem to be room n the active or 40-man roster for DJ.

That resulted in the big outfielder being designated for assignment by the Dodgers last week. He did not go unclaimed on waivers either as the Texas Rangers steep in to claim him. In his introductory press conference , Peters had some very kind words for his former team.

I absolutely loved the Dodgers organization. They’re awesome people and some really great people started my career there. And I made it to the big leagues there. So they will always have a special place being, growing up there as well. But really fortunate to be here.

Hearing that DJ enjoyed his time with the Dodgers is obviously good to hear from the fan side of things. He might be with another team now, but Los Angeles is where he made his dream of making it to the big leagues come true.

If he only could shorten his swing a bit and be more disciplined @ the plate. If he could’ve worked for good pitches to hit and got more hits and walks instead of KO’s, he still might be around. I predict if he keeps working on that, and w/ his natural athleticism he will make the major leagues because he is coachable.

Veteran LHP Duffy signs minor league deal with Rangers, and former OF Peters returns as a pitcher

  • Copy Link copied

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Veteran left-hander Danny Duffy is going to spring training with the Texas Rangers on a minor league contract for the second year in a row, still looking to pitch in the majors for the first time since surgery for a left flexor tendon injury in 2021.

The defending World Series champions on Monday announced that Duffy, catcher José Godoy and left-hander Chasen Shreve signed minor league deals with invitations to spring training. That gives Texas 27 non-roster invitees to spring training in Arizona later this month.

DJ Peters, who hit 12 homers in 52 games as an outfielder with the Rangers in 2021, also signed and will be in their minor league camp as a right-handed pitcher.

The 35-year-old Duffy last pitched in the majors in 2021, when he made 12 starts for the Kansas City Royals. He made seven minor league appearances while in the Los Angeles Dodgers organization in 2022, then signed with the Rangers and went 2-2 with a 3.28 ERA in 28 appearances last year between Double-A Frisco and Triple-A Round Rock. He had 42 strikeouts in 35 2/3 innings, but also walked 29.

In 11 big league seasons, all with the Royals from 2011-21, Duffy is 68-68 with a 3.95 ERA in 234 games (204 starts). He pitched in back-to-back World Series, winning the 2015 title with Kansas City in the first of his three seasons as teammates there with current Rangers general manager Chris Young.

Shreve was 1-2 with a 4.63 ERA in 50 relief appearances combined for Detroit and Cincinnati last season, when he was twice designated for assignment. The 33-year-old lefty has 367 career relief appearances, going 22-14 with a 3.97 ERA while pitching for seven different teams over the past 10 seasons.

Godoy has appeared in 26 big league games for three teams. He played 16 games for Seattle in 2021, then in 2022 played two with Minnesota and eight with Pittsburgh.

Texas acquired Peters off waivers from the Dodgers in August 2021, then he split 2022 between the Lotte Giants of the Korea Baseball Organization and Triple-A Rochester in the Minnesota Twins system. The 6-foot-5 righty was in the Detroit Tigers organization last season. He made a mid-summer switch to pitching and went 1-0 with a 6.23 ERA in 17 relief appearances in rookie ball. He struck out 27 and walked 27 over 21 2/3 innings.

Tyler Beede Designated For Assignment, Guardians Roster Moves

  • Cleveland Guardians

The Cleveland Guardians made a few roster moves that affect the major league team ahead of their weekend home stand against the Los Angeles Angels. These moves look to replenish and help a bullpen who are in desperate need of fresh arms.

Tyler Beede Designated For Assignment

Tyler Beede ’s time with the Cleveland Guardians has come to an end as the organization announced that they had designated him for assignment on Friday afternoon.

Beede was originally signed to a minor league deal over the offseason. He put together a number of impressive performances during spring training earning him a spot on the opening day roster. It also helped that Cleveland was dealing with a number of injuries to the rotation at the same time.

Beede made 13 appearances for the Guardians through the first month of the season and posted an 8.36 ERA and 1.79 WHIP over 14.0 innings pitched.

The veteran pitcher made a strong impact in the locker room, however, Cleveland needed more pitching depth and he was the odd-man out.

Peter Strzelecki Recalled From Triple-A

In the corresponding move, Cleveland called up RHP Peter Strzeleck i from Triple-A Columbus to take Beede’s spot. Strzelecki has appeared in two games with the Guardians this season pitching 2.0 innings giving up no runs.

It’s very possible fans see Strzelecki on Friday night as the team looks to give a number of players rest after four straight extra-innings games earlier this week.

Guardians Designate Tyler Beede For Assignment

By Steve Adams | May 3, 2024 at 2:41pm CDT

The Guardians designated right-hander Tyler Beede for assignment Friday and recalled fellow right-hander Peter Strzelecki from Triple-A Columbus in a corresponding move, Mandy Bell of MLB.com tweets .

The 30-year-old Beede (31 later this month) signed a minor league deal over the winter and won a spot in Cleveland’s Opening Day bullpen with a nice spring showing. He’s been hit hard through his first 14 regular-season innings, however, yielding 13 runs on 16 hits, nine walks and three hit batters. He’s fanned 18 opponents, giving him a nice 26.5% strikeout rate, but a poor 13.2% walk rate and a lofty 44.7% hard-hit rate have overshadowed his ability to miss bats.

Beede spent the 2023 season with the Yomiuri Giants of Japan’s Nippon Professional Baseball, for whom he posted a 3.99 ERA in 49 2/3 innings out of the bullpen. A former first-round pick by the Giants back in 2014, the Vanderbilt product was a top prospect but has seen his career stall out — in part due to injuries (most notably, Tommy John surgery). He’s pitched 201 innings in the majors and been dinged for a 5.55 ERA with worse-than-average strikeout and walk rates of 19.6% and 10%, respectively.

Between MLB stints, Beede has rather dramatically overhauled his pitching repertoire. His initial MLB run saw him use primarily a four-seamer, changeup and curveball, but the 2024 version of Beede is brandishing a four-seamer, splitter and sinker in addition to his breaking ball (which FanGraphs classifies as a slider but Statcast considers a curveball). Beede didn’t throw a single splitter from 2018-22, but it’s been his most heavily used pitch in 2024. It’s been hit hard when put into play, but Beede has also missed tons of bats with the pitch (16.8% swinging-strike rate).

The Guardians will have a week to trade Beede, attempt to pass him through outright waivers, or release him. He’d be able to reject an outright assignment to Columbus even if he ends up clearing waivers.

CO Guardening, I did not laugh at this. I definitely thought it was in bad taste.

The original comment deserved it. He’s either trolling the name change (yawn) or too lazy to use Google.

My comment was supposed to be sarcastic

Allowing 5 runs in 1/3rds of an inning doesn’t really help!

That is the type outing where you knock over the Gatorade jug and/or punch a wall to get IL time to extend MLB service time

I know a fairly recent Cy Young winner who pitched 7 and a third scoreless in Mexico last sunday that they could sign right now for the league minimum…

What’s his name again? On the tip of my tongue. If only people talked about him more I would remember his name.

@Ignorant Son-of-a-b

I think it was Tyler…. somethings.

he is the guy that women get rough with, but he surely can pitch its not like that other teammate he had who is on trial about his wife or gf

Forever Giant

San francisco and yomiuri

' src=

I remember watching him in college thinking he’d be an MLB mainstay.

The Giants picked him one pick ahead of the Angels. We took Sean Newcomb.

Both looked like solid picks. Neither really worked out.

' src=

Not a word about the guy coming up, Strzelecki? Why not? He or a loved one might check in to MLBTR, desperately looking for any upbeat or optimistic words about Pete’s chances to stick this try.

Nothing positive to report? Maybe, make something up. He increased his spin rate. He has perfected a new pitch. His strike-zone command returned or has improved.

He has fully recovered from his foo-foo boo-boo. He lowered his elbow 4.7 degrees in his reshaped delivery and it has paid immediate dividends.

He’s been gobbling hypodermics like candy and is overly ready to fire away at the MLB level. His personal Attitude Coach found the key to unlocking his trapped talent.

But, nothing is written here. Nary a word. That leads me to believe that Peter Strzelecki best not sign any Cleveland rental contracts, car or home. The best advice or guidance one could give to him is to commute from Columbus during what ominously shapes up as a very short and uneventful visit.

' src=

Hopefully he gets more rave reviews than Peter O’Brien.

Guardians designate right-hander for assignment, recall bullpen arm

CLEVELAND, Ohio — The Guardians swapped right-handed relievers to bolster their road-weary bullpen prior to Friday’s series opener against the Angels at Progressive Field.

Right-hander Peter Strzelecki was recalled from Triple-A Columbus and righty Tyler Beede was designated for assignment.

Cleveland’s bullpen has logged the second-most innings in the American League through its first 31 games at 124 2/3, but has the second-best fWAR according to Fangraphs.com at 2.1 behind the Mets.

Strzelecki, acquired March 28 from the Diamondbacks in exchange for cash, begins his second stint in Cleveland’s bullpen. He made two scoreless appearances for the Guardians registering a strikeout and one hit allowed in his two outings before being optioned on April 15.

With the Clippers, Strzelecki was 1-0 with a save and a 2.57 ERA in seven appearances. Strzelecki struck out 11 and walked one in 7 innings.

Beede, a former top prospect with the Giants, signed a minor league contract with Cleveland on Jan. 27 and made the club out of spring training. Manager Stephen Vogt said it was a tough conversation to have with Beede, who was once his teammate in San Francisco, who pitched in Japan in 2023.

The 30-year-old righty started strong with five scoreless appearances, striking out nine and walking two while allowing just one run in six innings to open the season. But over his last eight outings, Beede’s effectiveness waned as he pitched to a 14.63 ERA with nine strikeouts, seven walks and two home runs allowed. Beede surrendered 13 earned runs in his last eight innings as opposing batters slugged .714 against him.

“He was great for us at times and struggled at times,” Vogt said. “With the state of our bullpen and with our roster, we just had to make a tough decision. But I wish Tyler nothing but the best in the future. And he could be back with us, which would be great.”

Beede allowed five runs in 1/3 of an inning in Thursday’s 8-2 loss to the Astros in Houston.
