Mass effect 2 How to Get and Keep Legion Loyal

Mass Effect 2: How To Get & Keep Legion Loyal

Image of Andrew McMahon

Mass Effect 2 has a very complex relationship-building system that features choices which affect the overall outcome of the series. Included amongst those choices are loyalty-based endeavors that can mean the difference between characters living or dying. Here is everything you need to know about how to get and keep Legion loyal in Mass Effect 2.

How to Get Legion Loyal in Mass Effect 2 – Loyalty Guide

Mass Effect 2 How to Get and Keep Legion Loyal

Unlike some of the other characters in Mass Effect, Legion is not skippable or missable. You’ll naturally come upon him as you progress through the game’s narrative.

Specifically, you must complete the mission Reaper IFF that takes place on the Derelict Reaper to meet Legion. It is important to note that you’ll want to have completed all of the other assignments, ship upgrades, and loyalty missions available to you before doing this mission and getting Legion if you want to keep everyone alive.

Alongside this, you’ll want to be sure that you have a sufficient amount of Paragon and/or Renegade points to unlock dialogue options that’ll be pivotal to keeping Legion loyal later on.

At one point during the mission, Legion will be disabled by a husk while opening the way for Shepard to reach the ship’s mass effect core. After you finish this quest, Shepard takes Legion to the ship and is given the choice to either activate Legion or turn the Geth squadmate over to Cerberus. You’ll obviously want to pick the choice where you activating them.

Legion: A House Divided

You’ll then need to talk with Legion pretty much right after you get them – as your crew will be abducted very soon after the Reaper IFF Mission, signaling the Endgame – and they will inform Shepard that the Geth are in the midst of a civil war with one another. This creates a new mission called Legion: A House Divided. Complete this mission and you will have their loyalty, at least for the time being.

After you’ve completed Legion: A House Divided and Tali: Treason , Tali and Legion will get into an argument . You can resolve this argument peacefully if you have enough Paragon/Renegade points; or, you can take Legion’s side to retain their loyalty.

If you don’t take Legion’s side, you can visit them in their quarters afterward and speak with them. You’ll get one final chance to win back their loyalty here. Thankfully, the threshold requirements for Paragon/Renegade will be far lower this time around. Use whichever one you have, and you should be able to get their loyalty back.

Time needed:  1 hour

How to Keep Legion Loyal in Mass Effect 2

Note that you’ll need to have decent Renegade and/or Paragon standing for the morality dialog options needed to regain Legion’s loyalty if you don’t take their side in the argument.

That is everything you need to know about how to get and keep Legion loyal in Mass Effect 2. If you do all these things correctly, you’ll have the best possible chance for keeping them alive through the events of Mass Effect 2.   For more tips, tricks, and FAQs answered, be sure to check out our Mass Effect Legendary Edition wiki guide for more helpful info.

Mass Effect 2: How to Earn Legion’s Loyalty

Legion is a surprise squadmate who doesn't arrive until late in Mass Effect 2, but his loyalty mission provides valuable insight into the Geth.

Legion is an interesting recruit. He doesn't come in until very late in the game, and his loyalty mission is part of a mission countdown to major story events in Mass Effect 2 . He's also a Geth, an unlikely team member, especially with Tali on board. However, Legion provides some interesting insight into the Geth and is a pretty good squadmate to have on the team. You don't want to lose this member by missing out on its loyalty mission before saving the galaxy.

Legion is obtained while acquiring the Reaper IFF late into the game. It helps Shepard, who then takes its unconscious body aboard the Normandy and can decide to reactivate it or sell it to Cerberus for 50,000 credits. Assuming you've chosen to keep this Geth for yourself, Shepard will get to pick its brain and learn that not all Geth follow the Reapers. They're also susceptible to Reaper indoctrination, and those who follow them are called heretics. Legion will ask Shepard to assist in destroying a heretic base for the loyalty mission, "A House Divided."

Aboard the Geth Ship

You'll be fighting Geth, so choose a third member with tech abilities and get ready to fight synthetics in a small space. Once on the station, Legion will inform Shepard that it has an alternate plan to destroy the station. Legion proposes that it could modify the Reaper virus to reprogram the Geth on board to essentially change their minds about following the Reapers and leave the heretics, rejoining Legion and the other unindoctrinated Geth. It's unsure if this is the right choice, but this doesn't need to be decided now. Saying it's unethical will earn +2 Paragon while saying they're just machines will earn +2 Renegade. Keep an eye out for medi-gel and salvage while exploring the ship.

In the next room, Legion will inform Shepard about the glowing nodes on the ground. Not all Geth will be active on the ship, mostly applying to rooms with glowing green tech pathways. Avoid stepping on these as they will sound alarms and active Geth from nearby nodes. If the pattern changes to red, it's bad news. While Geth are at these nodes, they're vulnerable to attacks and will not pay attention to Shepard or the squad, giving you an opening. Shooting the nodes will cause them to explode and do serious damage to enemies on them. Once they're dealt with, these nodes can also be salvaged for credits. Once this first one is destroyed, a conversation with Legion will take place, giving you more information about the Geth.

Saying the heretics are still Geth will earn +2 Paragon, as will saying that rewriting them could be traumatizing. Saying Legion feels guilty will earn +2 Renegade. On the other hand, worrying about brainwashing and their judgment sucks will earn +2 Renegade each, and saying that Legion would lose out on heretic perspective will earn +2 Paragon. Afterward, head through the door into a hallway.

RELATED: Mass Effect 2: The Fate of Haestrom's Sun is A HUGE Missed Opportunity

There will be inactive Rocket Drones that Shepard can choose to activate for a few seconds before self-destructing, giving the team an advantage during a firefight. Take out the Geth and head into the next room. Here you'll find two more nodes; hitting one shouldn't trigger the other, allowing Shepard to take them down one group at a time. Once the Geth are down and the nodes are salvaged, continue through the room to the next hallway.

There will be more Geth here, and this time no extra help. Take them out, check the area and head up the ramp to the next room to fight more Geth. There will be a few waves here, so be careful. Head through the door into the next hallway and down the ramp where you'll be deep into the station.

More Geth will be waiting for Shepard, so take them out. Afterward, head over to a Geth terminal nearby to find a Geth Shield Boost upgrade before heading to the next area. Watch out for the data streams on the floor and continue through to the next room. There will be more nodes here, so take out each and their groups of Geth, salvage the nodes and head on. In the next hallway, there is an option to interact with the server room window. Doing so will trigger a conversation with Legion, who will tell Shepard more about the Geth. In reference to each faction, saying things change will earn +2 Paragon while saying Legion was naïve will earn +2 Renegade. Saying it's not Legion's fault will earn +2 Paragon while blaming the heretics will earn +2 Renegade. After this scene, continue moving forward.

The Decision and Holding the Line

Do NOT activate the drones here yet. Shepard and the team will be holding the line in this room, and it's best to wait until enemies are in range. The ammo in this area will respawn overtime as well. Accessing the console will trigger a scene with Legion, and it will begin to alter the virus, alerting Geth to their location. Stay up top where it's easiest to oversee the room and assign the other squad member to a side while Shepard takes the other. There will be drones on the lower level to assist in defeating up to four waves of Geth. Once they're all defeated, another conversation will begin with Legion.

Shepard must now decide to rewrite the Geth for a huge +30 Paragon or destroy the station for another big +30 Renegade. Your decision here will have consequences in Mass Effect 3 as part of the main plotline. Regardless of the choice made, it will be time to leave the station – quickly.

RELATED: Mass Effect 2 Guide: How to Recruit Tali

A three-minute timer will begin to get off the station once the choice is made. It's not a far run to get off the ship, but you will need to fight your way out. Head East through a door near the console and get ready to fight more Geth on the way out. Around a corner will be a Geth Prime, so be prepared to take it out as it will get in your face in this small area. Alternatively, you may attempt to bolt past everything and make it to the airlock.

Once safely out of harm's way on the Normandy (and provided you've completed Tali's loyalty mission), Tali and Legion will be in an argument. Like Jack and Miranda, Shepard can mediate the issue by siding with one party or settling the dispute to keep them both happy. Saying both sides are right will earn +15 Paragon, while telling them to knock it off will earn +15 Renegade. Additionally, telling Tali to back off will lose her loyalty. However, talking to her again and saying Legion is needed will earn +15 Paragon or saying Legion isn't a pet will earn +15 Renegade, and both will restore her loyalty. Telling Legion to stop transmitting data will lose its loyalty, but speaking with it again and apologizing will earn +15 Paragon, or saying Shepard lied to Tali will earn +15 Renegade; both choices will restore Legion's loyalty.

Mass Effect: Legendary Edition is out now. The remastered bundle includes the three main games, lots of former DLC, and new quality of life features including alternate leveling for the first installment and a dynamic photo mode . This can be used to highlight great moments of a player’s favorite characters.

The second game, Mass Effect 2, same some of the most intense choices of the series. There are many potential specialists to recruit , all of whom have a unique story and motive. One of the most compelling is the Geth Legion. But to gain his loyalty may require planning ahead or risk jeopardizing other characters.

Preparing Legion’s Loyalty Mission in Mass Effect 2

Recovering Legion from the Reaper IFF starts an invisible timer towards the end of the game’s plot, the Suicide Mission. Players will only have a small window of 1-3 quests before the Collectors ambush the Normandy and kidnap the crew. This can leave a predicament for when exactly to do Legion’s loyalty mission, with a few options:

  • Trigger A House Divided Right away: use what little time left to have a loyal Legion help save the crew
  • Conduct the Suicide Mission with a disloyal Legion: take Legion on the final mission, then complete A House Divided if he survives
  • Leave Legion deactivated: rescue the crew now without risk of losing Legion, and turn the Geth on later

This will all come down to how much players have prepared the other specialists, the Normandy, and care about the crew. Callous players can even let Cerberus members like Kenneth Donnelly, Gabby Daniels, Kelly Chambers, and Karin Chakwas die in the pursuit of a better Legion or other priorities. On the other hand, a disloyal Legion can survive the final assault as long as he isn’t assigned to a vital role like hacking expert, fire team leader, or escort.

Most importantly, do not place a non-loyal Legion in Shepard’s squad for the final battle; leave him to hold the line with strong defenders like Zaeed, Grunt, and Garrus. If Kasumi was not recruited, players will need to have purchased Multicore Shielding from Tali for 15,000 Palladium, or else Legion will perish on the way to the Collector Base.

A House Divided in Mass Effect 2

After activating Legion, talk to him and learn about the Geth virus and Geth Heretics, granting the quest A House Divided . When he first mentions these rogue Geth depends on what else Shepard has already accomplished. If there are absolutely no other major missions left, Legion will explain the situation right away. If there is any recruitment or loyalty missions in the galaxy, at least one more will need to be cleared first. In the case of the latter, Kelly (if alive) will inform Shepard that Legion is ready to chat.

Once ready, players will need to head to the Phoenix Massing cluster, Sea of Storms system, and finally Heretic Station. Choose a third squad member that compliments well with Shepard and Legion, the latter who is both an engineer and sniper. However, for a bit more banter, Tali as a Quarian will have an extra dialogue on the mission. Mordin and Jack also have some scientific and moral insight into the situation. Heretic Station has low gravity which gives bonuses to biotic powers.

Legion has flooded the station with junk code, and enemy Geth will not activate until someone crosses the green lights on the ground (including the two teammates). Use this as a means to get into a good position before most encounters start. Geth Hunters, Geth Troopers, and Geth Drones make up the bulk of the enemies but are susceptible to Overload or Hacking. The station has a lot of spare credits to find, along with raw materials, and a Geth Shield Boost upgrade Legion can use.

Geth Virus Computer

Eventually, the party will reach their primary objective: the main terminal where the virus is being completed. Legion will warn Shepard that once the console is activated, all remaining Geth will swarm the area. When ready, tell Legion to start the process. The Geth will arrive in four waves, consisting of a large amount of Geth Troopers, Geth Hunters, and Geth Rocket Troopers. Legion will also hack into the various Drones to help support the team. For the most part, hunkering down by the barrier near the terminal is a safe position. Despite the increased numbers, the strategy will mostly be the same of mostly using Overload, Hacking, and other attacks with bonuses against synthetic enemies.

After all of the Geth are destroyed, Legion will present two options of what to do with the virus: the Paragon choice is to rewrite them, the Renegade one to outright destroy them. This doesn’t have much impact during Mass Effect 2 , but for players that will enter Mass Effect 3 destruction is a much better option.

Destroying the Geth here will make negotiations of peace between Geth and Quarians easier in the next game. The same peace can also be brokered if players both rewrite the Geth and prevent Tali’s exile via dialogue alone during her own loyalty mission. Those players that previously had Tali removed from the flotilla (or prevented the exile with evidence over speech checks) will absolutely want to pick the destroy path. Note that if Legion later dies on the Suicide Mission, peace is impossible as his replacement Geth VI doesn’t understand humanity; but, Tali’s replacement Shala’Ran is willing to accept the real Legion.

Escape and Aftermath

Regardless of the decision, Heretic Station will detonate in three minutes and lead to a game over at that point. Players do not need to kill every enemy, simply rush back to the airlock in time. Stick to killing only necessary enemies that obstruct the way, or have squad members deal the brunt of damage while Shepard runs to the exit.

While Legion’s personal mission is concluded, there is one more scene that merges two storylines. When both Legion and Tali’s loyalty missions are completed, the two will confront one another in the AI core. A high Paragon or Renegade check is needed to defuse the situation and make them both stand down. Alternately, Shepard can outright agree with either Legion or Tali, but will lose the loyalty of the other.

Mass Effect Legendary Edition: How to Recruit Legion

Image of Victor Vellas

The Geth construct Legion is a unique character that you can invite and join your crew in Mass Effect Legendary Edition . Legion becomes available in Mass Effect 2 to be precise, and it is by far one of the most controversial squad members you can have. After all, Geth is considered as the enemy and having one of their own bots inside Normandy would for sure feel uneasy. That said, Legion ends up being a very strong member of your party, so let’s find out how you can end up recruiting the Geth robot.

How to recruit Legion in Mass Effect Legendary Edition

Legion is unlockable in Mass Effect 2, and before anything else, you first need to reach the point where the Reaper IFF mission becomes available. It is a task placed from The Illusive Man himself, and his request is to track down the IFF object with goal to pass through the Omega 4 Relay, continuing the events of Mass Effect Legendary Edition.

As you progress through the mission, Legion is going to be a recurrent encounter up until he is taken down by the Husks. Completing the mission will end you with bringing Legion back to Normandy, with players deciding its fate. You can either reactivate the Geth machine and see what to do with it, or simply sell it to Cerberus and be done with it. As you would imagine, if you end up selling Legion the option of having him as a party member is forever and permanently gone. The reward is 50.000 Credits, so in my opinion, this amount of money is not worth it than having a very unique character being added to the roster of your more typical crew members.

If you actually re-activate Legion instead of selling him to Cerberus, after an interesting dialogue the Geth robot will join your squad. The interactions with other crewmates are interesting to say the least, so enjoy having a Geth killing machine as your ally and make sure to take advantage of its highly efficient firepower in the battlefield.

Mass Effect 2: Should You Rewrite Or Destroy The Geth Heretics?

We explore the consequences of rewriting or destroying the Geth Heretics during Legion's loyalty mission.

Quick Links

Legion's loyalty mission, the heretic station, rewrite or destroy the geth heretics, the consequences of both geth heretic decisions, the effects of your decision in mass effect 3.

The Mass Effect series is filled with tough decisions. You'll even decide the fate of several entire alien races. Tied with such bombastic moments is a late-game mission in Mass Effect 2 which tasks players with choosing to either rewrite or destroy the Geth Heretics.

RELATED: How The Rachni Queen Choice Affects Mass Effect 2 And Mass Effect 3

The decision occurs at the end of Legion's loyalty mission and has some major ramifications for Mass Effect 3 . It can certainly be a distressful decision, so here is everything you need to know about it, alongside our estimation of how much it matters which route you take.

Updated on August 4, 2023 by Quinton O'Connor: We've added further details to consider when weighing the choice between rewriting and destroying the Geth Heretics.

It's important to note that this decision is only open to you if you have Legion as a party member , meaning you can't sell the Geth to Cerberus . Then after a short time of having Legion onboard, your journal (and Kelly) will inform you that he wants to speak to Shepard.

He will tell you that the Geth Heretics — Geth that worship the Reapers and the ones Shepard fought in the first game — are planning to introduce a virus into the Geth that will force them all to side with the Reapers. Luckily, you still have a chance to stop them, which serves as the premise to his loyalty mission, aka 'Legion: A House Divided' .

RELATED: Mass Effect: What Should You Do With David?

Once you arrive at the Heretic station to start the mission, Legion will tell you that, on top of destroying the Heretics, it is also possible to rewrite their code to force them to abandon the Reapers . He will try to form a consensus about what to do as the mission progresses.

While navigating the station you will be given additional insight into how Geth society works and what possibly caused the main Geth and the Heretics to drift apart. These are factors to consider when thinking about your decision.

At the end of the quest, you will find a large room with a terminal that needs to be hacked to stop the Heretics. This is when Legion tasks you with making the big choice in question.

Legion lets you decide since he is unable to come to a consensus about what to do and leaves the fate of his people in your hands. (Also, because this is a BioWare game, and it'd be weird if you had no input on such a lofty matter.)

These are your options:

  • Rewriting The Heretics - You can rewrite the Heretics to force them into believing that worshipping the Reapers is bad. It'll keep them alive , but you'll be taking away their free will.
  • Destroying The Heretics - Selecting to wipe out the Heretics means you're destroying a good portion of Geth, which is like killing a bunch of Legions in a way.

In the immediate aftermath, you will receive paragon points for rewriting the Heretics or renegade points for destroying them . Also, the scene of you leaving the station will slightly differ depending on your choice.

An EMP-like pulse will rock the station (if you rewrote the Geth Heretics), or the station will blow up as the Normandy escapes (if they were killed). In Mass Effect 2, those are the only real consequences for your decision - besides the occasional bit of dialogue. The true impact of your choice won't manifest until Mass Effect 3.

RELATED: Mass Effect Legendary Edition: Tips For Playing On Insanity Difficulty

The war to retake Rannoch still happens regardless of your choice since the Geth side with the Reapers in order to survive. The decision also plays a major role in brokering peace between the Geth and Quarians . Destroying them will help pave the way for the two races to settle their differences. And peace is the only way you can keep both Tali and Legion on your side.

Once Legion is saved (if he lives through the Suicide Mission), he will explain how it was tough for the Geth to accept aid from the Reapers due to the Quarians attacking first and lament how they accidentally gave the Reapers more Geth to use as fodder.

In fact, either companion can die if the conflict between the Geth and Quarians remains.

However, this sequence of events doesn't completely depend on you destroying the Heretics. This is just one of several decisions that impact the chances of peace. So, even if you rewrite the Heretics, the Geth and Quarians can still end on good terms.

Rewriting The Heretics

Your decision will also affect the number of Geth and Quarian war assets you have available. This is the more tangential element, and also the only thing that is completely determined by your course of action during Legion's ME2 Loyalty Mission. More Geth means heavier Quarian losses. So, you will have more Geth assets by taking this route.

Destroying The Heretics

As they have fewer Geth to fight, more Quarians survive the war giving you more of the latter assets. You'll get about as many Quarian War Assets as you would have Geth otherwise, so it's ultimately more thematic than anything. Do you like the idea of the Quarians having the upper hand in ME3? You can go this route, then. Just bear in mind it'll be a little harder to reach a permanent peace between the two.

On the other hand, you might be aiming for either a Geth or Quarian total victory. If that's the case, and you want the Quarians to win, destroying the Heretics will help you along the way to a Quarian win .

The best choice for Legion's loyalty mission is ultimately up to you to decide as there are valid arguments for either rewriting or destroying the Geth Heretics. While that can be frustrating, it's also Mass Effect at its best; rather than overtly reward, it challenges us to consider what we would do, without additional trinkets to tempt us in either direction.

Mass Effect 2 Legion: How to Get the Geth Companion & Gain Their Loyalty

Image of Josh Broadwell

Recruiting all of the Mass Effect  characters gives you the best chance of surviving in the trilogy’s two toughest moments, but one of the trickiest to deal with is Mass Effect 2 Legion. It’s not just how to find Legion, though, since they’re part of Mass Effect 2 ’s penultimate mission. It’s the timing.

Finding Legion in Mass Effect 2 and securing their loyalty before initiating the Omega Relay sequence can make a significant difference in your crew surviving the suicide mission and how much Effective Military Strength you amass in Mass Effect 3 . Here’s how to get Legion in ME2 and when you should complete their loyalty mission.

How to Get Legion in Mass Effect 2

mass effect legion mission

You won’t come across Legion until Mass Effect 2 ’s last mission before the suicide mission. Legion is on board the derelict Reaper and helps Shepard deal with the threats there before the crew locates the IFF and enters the relay.

However, there are some things to keep in mind before exploring the derelict Reaper. After the mission ends, you’ll only have time to take on one more quest before you have to enter the Relay (if you don’t, then your crew starts dying).

Securing the crew’s loyalty before this point gives everyone a better chance of staying alive during the suicide mission, which is required for seeing Mass Effect 2 ’s good ending. Make sure you do everyone else’s loyalty mission before exploring the derelict Reaper .

During Tali’s mission , you should choose not to present evidence of her father’s work.

Mass Effect 2 Legion Loyalty Mission and Tali Confrontation

mass effect legion mission

Once you arrive back on the Normandy with Legion and go through some conversations, you’ll be prompted to start the Legion loyalty mission. What you choose during the Legion loyalty mission affects your EMS in Mass Effect 3 , so you’ll want to rewrite the heretics during the mission and  make peace with them and the Geth in ME3 .

After you finish Legion’s mission, and if you did the right thing in Tali’s, you’ll arrive back on the Normandy to find a conflict between Legion and Tali.

Legion and Tali Confrontation

There are a few ways to handle the Tali and Legion confrontation. The first is if your Paragon or Renegade percentage is high enough ( 80% for either ), which lets you calm them both down and avoid losing anyone’s loyalty.

If not, you can actually side with Tali, then approach Legion and tell them you lied to keep Tali happy. That restores Legion’s confidence in you without damaging Tali’s relationship.

If you side with Legion during the confrontation, however, there’s no way to restore Tali’s loyalty .

As for the suicide mission itself, you can use Legion as the technical specialist in phase one. That’s all they’re suited for, though, and they might die if put in another capacity.

That’s all you need to know about Mass Effect   2 Legion, but be sure to check out our other Mass Effect Legendary Edition guides for more tips on making the most of the classic space saga.

Fallout 4: A Complete Guide to Supply Lines

Fallout 4 fans have grim theory about sanctuary hills, v rising: best early pve build.

There are many tough choices to make in  Mass Effect 2 , and one of them comes during the Legion: A House Divided loyalty mission. More specifically, players must decide if they will rewrite the Geth heretics or destroy them, and their actions will have consequences in both  Mass Effect 2   and  3 . For those fans that would like a better understanding of those consequence before they make their selection, full details on the decision can be found in this guide.

The most basic thing that a player should consider when making this choice   is if they have been slanting their playthrough toward Paragon or Renegade. Indeed, rewriting the heretics awards a large number of Paragon points, and it is perhaps the best option for fans that are playing a kinder, gentler Commander Shepard. Players that have opted for a more ruthless protagonist, on the other hand, may want to destroy the heretics, as doing so will award Renegade points in Mass Effect .

RELATED:  Mass Effect 2: What Happens if You 'Cheat' On Liara, Kaidan, or Ashley?

Additionally, Mass Effect  players may want to think about how this decision will affect things in  Mass Effect 3 , as rewriting the heretics will ultimately make the Geth stronger and destroying them will do just the opposite. Without getting too deeply into spoiler territory, this materialize in  3  as bonuses and penalties to the Geth and Quarian War Assets, with the rewrite boosting the former and the destruction boosting the latter.

It is also worth mentioning that this decision can have an impact on how the Geth and Quarian conflict resolves in the final game in the  Mass Effect trilogy. Namely, destroying the heretics puts two points toward unlocking the option to establish peace between the two races. While it is indeed possible to get the requisite five points and gain access to that option without going Renegade in Legion: A House Divided, players that want to both rewrite the heretics and facilitate peace will need to be quite careful with some of their other actions.

With all of this said, perhaps the most important thing to consider when deciding whether to rewrite the heretics or destroy them is the morality of the action. While opting to rewrite the Geth may be the more humane option, as it leaves them alive at the very least, some Commander Shepards may simply not be willing to alter the heretics' minds in this fashion. Indeed, every player will need to decide for themselves what is acceptable when dealing with the heretics, and that is what makes this choice such a good one.

Mass Effect 2: How to get Legion as a squad mate

As you progress through  Mass Effect 2  and put together its 'dirty dozen' squad of wildly different members of your crew, you might notice that one character remains unavailable to recruit right through the game until very deep into it. For those of you playing the game for the first time, we've not been surprised to see some of you asking...  how do you get Legion as a squad mate?

The answer is pretty simple, but it does feed into a bunch of other elements of Mass Effect 2. If you're chasing the best ending where everybody lives through the suicide mission , for instance, you'll have a very limited opportunity to recruit Legion and complete its loyalty mission, as it all falls quite close to the point of no return in ME2 - or even after it, depending on how you look at it.

We'll explain all that below, detailing how to get Legion while keeping it as spoiler-free as possible.

mass_effect_2_how_to_get_legion.jpg

How to get Legion in Mass Effect 2

So, if you're just getting deep into Mass Effect 2, have every other squad mate recruited, and are just worrying about not having Legion yet: don't worry. The important thing for you to know is that it's impossible to miss the opportunity to recruit Legion in ME2 . If that's your only worry, you can close this tab now and carry on playing.

That doesn't mean that it's guaranteed you recruit Legion, however. Legion doesn't have a traditional recruitment mission like the rest of the cast. Instead, you get the opportunity to have it join your crew on a very late-game mission, 'Acquire Reaper IFF'. However, this mission is also an important one to postpone as much as possible, because triggering and completing the Reaper IFF mission where you meet Legion sets off an in-game timer that means you have a limited amount of time to complete the game if you want all of your friends to survive. This is why we push this mission right to the back of our suggested ME2 mission order .

You'll meet Legion during the Acquire Reaper IFF Mission, and when you finish the mission, you'll have Legion back on the Normandy - but not as a squad mate. As with Grunt, you'll be able to choose if you want to allow Legion to join your crew, or if you don't trust it enough. In the case of Legion, if you decide not to free it, you'll instead send it to Cerberus and get a bunch of cash in return. However, this means you don't get it as a squadmate.

Because of the silent ticking clock set off in the background by completing the Acquire Reaper IFF Mission, if you want the optimum ending of Mass Effect 2, you'll need to immediately acquire Legion's Loyalty Mission by talking to it (multiple times, if necessary), and then immediately taking part in that mission. If you complete more than one mission after the Reaper IFF, you'll find yourself in a situation where some friendly faces won't make it through alive. We explain this in full, spoilerific detail in our ME2 endings and suicide mission guide .

All of this is slightly strange, because it means that if you go for the best possible ending of ME2, you'll essentially only be able to use Legion for two missions - its own loyalty mission, and the grand finale. Legion also isn't a squad mate in ME3, though decisions made around its recruitment & loyalty will have consequences in Mass Effect 3 , as Legion will show up as friend or as foe - regardless of if you kept it on the Normandy (friend) or sold it to Cerberus (foe).

This is frustrating because Legion has great dialogue throughout every other mission of the game - and in some instances, such as on Tali's loyalty mission or when you first visit the Citadel, triggers especially unique dialogue options and responses from others. But these can only be seen if you completely throw any optimum game out of the window and embrace a bit of death and destruction - which might be something to consider for new game plus! It's also strange since Legion formed a major part of the intrigue around Mass Effect 2's announcement - but it's ultimately barely in the game.

Mass Effect 4 Should Look To a Devastating Ending Twist from Its Past

As possibly the most controversial moment in the entire franchise’s history, the ending of Mass Effect 3 is still remembered for the backlash it received. The three options available to Commander Shepard in the finale were criticized for simplifying the nuanced layers of choice built up over the trilogy, and many fans are likely hoping that the next Mass Effect doesn’t repeat a similar mistake. An alternate fourth ending for ME3 that was later added as DLC, however, reaffirmed the player’s control in a way that the next Mass Effect would be wise to take cues from.

Understandably, many players expressed frustration over being limited to Mass Effect 3 's Destroy, Control, and Synthesis endings , as there was little foreshadowing regarding such a black-and-white decision following all the various routes that could have led there. Forced by the Catalyst AI to pick one of the pre-determined fates for the Reapers, Shepard was instead granted the ability to betray this entity with the release of the Extended Cut DLC. Hopefully, the next Mass Effect can avoid the same scenario to begin with, but taking after this DLC from the start would continue a BioWare trend of making the dire consequences of player actions count.

The Next Mass Effect Should Avoid a Mako Equivalent Like the Omega Plague

Mass effect 3's refusal ending is a bleak route taken by few players, the extended cut dlc's fourth ending triggered by shooting the catalyst.

Seemingly in response to the negative reception of the original set of endings, Mass Effect 3 's Refusal route plays out if Shepard chooses to shoot at the AI projection. All the player’s war preparation efforts will be for naught as the entity withdraws its assistance and leaves the galaxy doomed, leading to the saddest possible outcome for ME ’s cast, as well as the most unpredictable.

Allowing the Reapers to Complete the Cycle of Extinction

In a sequence that fully commits to the player’s failure to stop the Reapers, a cutscene of Liara T’Soni is shown preserved in a time capsule, presumably long after the time of her death. This reveals that all life was seemingly wiped out, but an alternate Stargazer cutscene also indicates that the next cycle of life learned from the previous one’s mistakes.

The Next Mass Effect Could Benefit From Allowing the Player to Fail the Mission

The value of dire consequences like those for betraying the catalyst.

A complaint that has often been leveraged against modern RPGs even beyond ME3 is that their overall stories aren’t actually affected that much by player decision, but other BioWare titles have effectively handled this by featuring failure states as legitimate narrative choices. Mass Effect 2 's final Suicide Mission is still praised for its open-ended structure, which allows the player to utterly fumble and permanently die, even if it's not a canon outcome.

Titles like Dragon Age: Origins are similarly remembered for allowing the protagonist to sacrifice themselves or another character, permanently affecting the sequels. Meanwhile, Andromeda ends up with nearly identical final outcomes no matter what the player does.

It might seem counterintuitive to let the player be killed off, or the entire galaxy lost, when the next Mass Effect is probably set to be the beginning of a new saga, but ME2 proved that some bad endings can be great in a vacuum. When the fundamental design philosophy of an RPG is about options, it only enhances the experience and increases the stakes on top of adding replayability to know that the player can narratively lose the battle. With the next Mass Effect potentially set after the Destroy Ending , there may be more opportunities for creating the worst-case scenario on a larger scale than ever before.
