WARSAW, Poland (AP) — Ola Kozak is celebrating. The 11-year-old, who loves music and drawing, expects to have more free time for her hobbies after Poland’s government ordered strict limits on the amount of homework in the lower grades.

“I am happy,” said the fifth grader, who lives in a Warsaw suburb with her parents and younger siblings. The lilac-colored walls in her bedroom are covered in her art, and on her desk she keeps a framed picture she drew of Kurt Cobain.

“Most people in my class in the morning would copy the work off someone who had done the homework or would copy it from the internet. So it didn’t make sense,” she said.

The government of Prime Minister Donald Tusk enacted the ban against required homework this month amid a broad discussion about the need to modernize Poland’s education system, which critics say puts too much emphasis on rote learning and homework, and not enough on critical thinking and creativity.

Under the decree, teachers are no longer to give required homework to kids in the first to third grades. In grades four to eight, homework is now optional and doesn’t count towards a grade.

Not everyone likes the change – and even Ola’s parents are divided.

“If there is something that will make students enjoy school more, then it will probably be good both for the students and for the school,” said her father, Pawel Kozak.

His wife, Magda Kozak, was skeptical. “I am not pleased, because (homework) is a way to consolidate what was learned,” she said. “It helps stay on top of what the child has really learned and what’s going on at school.”

(Ola’s brother Julian, a third grader, says he sees both sides.)

Debates over the proper amount of homework are common around the globe. While some studies have shown little benefit to homework for young learners, other experts say it can help them learn how to develop study habits and academic concepts.

Poland’s educational system has undergone a number of controversial overhauls. Almost every new government has tried to make changes — something many teachers and parents say has left them confused and discouraged. For example, after communism was thrown off, middle schools were introduced. Then under the last government, the previous system was brought back. More controversy came in recent years when ultra-conservative views were pushed in new textbooks.

For years, teachers have been fleeing the system due to low wages and political pressure. The current government is trying to increase teacher salaries and has promised other changes that teachers approve of.

But Sławomir Broniarz, the head of the Polish Teachers’ Union, said that while he recognized the need to ease burdens on students, the new homework rules are another case of change imposed from above without adequate consultation with educators.

“In general, the teachers think that this happened too quickly, too hastily,” he said.

He argued that removing homework could widen the educational gaps between kids who have strong support at home and those from poorer families with less support and lower expectations. Instead, he urged wider changes to the entire curriculum.

The homework rules gained impetus in the runup to parliamentary elections last year, when a 14-year-old boy, Maciek Matuszewski, stood up at a campaign rally and told Tusk before a national audience that children “had no time to rest.” The boy said their rights were being violated with so much homework on weekends and so many tests on Mondays.

Tusk has since featured Matuszewski in social media videos and made him the face of the sudden change.

Education Minister Barbara Nowacka said she was prompted by research on children’s mental health. Of the various stresses children face, she said, “the one that could be removed fastest was the burden of homework.”

Pasi Sahlberg, a prominent Finnish educator and author, said the value of homework depends on what it is and how it is linked to overall learning. The need for homework can be “very individual and contextual.”

“We need to trust our teachers to decide what is good for each child,” Sahlberg said.

In South Korea, homework limits were set for elementary schools in 2017 amid concerns that kids were under too much pressure. However, teenagers in the education-obsessed country often cram long into the night and get tutoring to meet the requirements of demanding school and university admission tests.

In the U.S., teachers and parents decide for themselves how much homework to assign. Some elementary schools have done away with homework entirely to give children more time to play, participate in activities and spend time with families.

A guideline circulated by teachers unions in the U.S. recommends about 10 minutes of homework per grade. So, 10 minutes in first grade, 20 minutes in second grade and so on.

The COVID-19 pandemic and a crisis around youth mental health have complicated debates around homework. In the U.S., extended school closures in some places were accompanied by steep losses in learning , which were often addressed with tutoring and other interventions paid for with federal pandemic relief money. At the same time, increased attention to student wellbeing led some teachers to consider alternate approaches including reduced or optional homework.

It’s important for children to learn that mastering something “usually requires practice, a lot of practice,” said Sahlberg, in Finland. If reducing homework leads kids and parents to think school expectations for excellence will be lowered, “things will go wrong.”

Third-grade retention is now required in Indiana. Have similar policies helped or hurt other states?

caretentionpolicy030524.JPG

In Indiana, one in five students haven’t mastered reading by the end of third grade. It’s just one of many states across the nation that are facing the issue of elementary illiteracy, especially in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Indiana passed Senate Bill 1 on March 11. The bill includes screenings for early reading deficits and funding for literacy coaching, but it’s best known for strengthening third grade retention requirements. Now, third graders who don’t pass the IREAD assessment or meet a “ good cause exception, ” made for cases such as students with intellectual disabilities or learning English as a second language, will be held back.

Indiana isn’t the first state to pass literacy legislation. California and Florida pioneered third grade retention in the late 1990s, and since then, states from Mississippi to Michigan have passed various laws to support elementary readers.

These policies, especially around retention, are often controversial . Study results are complicated: Retention can be effective , but only when it’s paired with other forms of support, such as screenings and coaching. It can also lead to inequity and negative mental health impacts.

S.B. 1 is about outcomes, Sen. Jeff Raatz (R-Richmond), one of the bill’s authors, said. Raatz also authored Senate Bill 6 , which aims to help students who’ve left third grade without passing reading assessments catch up. For students to be successful in life, he said, they need to know how to read.

As Indiana looks towards its first school year with S.B.1’s policies in place, it’s worth looking at how similar laws have played out in schools across the country.

Arizona has gone through a variety of different reading support plans. The state passed a “ Move on When Reading ” policy in 2010 that retains third graders who scored low on reading proficiency exams. The policy was implemented in 2013, and since then, has been updated to mandate dyslexia screenings in kindergarten and first grade and to add teacher training on dyslexia.

Like Indiana law, it contains some exemptions, including students in special education programs or who are learning English as a second language. Both bills are also known for their retention policies, but also include support for and ways to identify struggling students.

By 2021, Arizona fourth grade students improved their reading level on standardized tests by half a grade and the literacy test pass rate to 46% from 40% when the policy was implemented. Terri Clark, Arizona literacy director of early literacy initiative Read on Arizona , said the reason the policy works is because it’s a comprehensive set of strategies. Students are getting reading support earlier because of improvements like literacy coaching and increased educator preparation.

“Retention is just one tool in that toolbox of policies,” Clark said. “It's not the end. We really tried to approach it as that: retention is one tool, and almost the last tool, to help ensure students, struggling readers especially, don't fall through the cracks.”

Retaining third graders is a “gray area” in some ways, Clark said. There’s a clear short-term boost in reading skills, but it’s not clear if that effect continues — another reason she believes having multiple strategies is important. It can’t just be “retention for retention’s sake,” she said.

Karen Carney, an Ohio elementary school teacher, looks at the issue differently. Ohio’s 2012 Third Grade Reading Guarantee aimed to end “social promotion,” when third grade students are allowed to continue into fourth grade despite not passing literacy assessments. It went into effect in 2013, and it remained that way until 2023, when it was weakened in favor of parental choice.

Carney worried about retention’s effect on students’ mental health. Seeing the students realize the gravity of the test, that it’s all or nothing, was disturbing, she said.

“You should never judge a child, or anyone, on one moment in time, because there's so much more that plays into that big picture,” Carney said.

One year, her school district tried to do partial retention: “three and a half-ers,” Carney recalled. The students took all their normal fourth grade classes but went to third grade reading instruction. It yielded the worst results of all, she said.

“Everyone knew that they had failed the reading test,” Carney said. “Because there they were, with the scarlet letter on their chest.”

Raatz raised an opposing concern about mental health. If students move on without learning to read, he said, they’ll get behind. If they’re called on to read in class, they won’t be able to. That kind of persistent embarrassment can lead to behavioral issues down the road, he said.

Instead of retention, Carney believes the solution should instead involve early intervention. Schools should target students for reading help in kindergarten, because by the time they get to third grade they’re already behind.

It’s important to recognize that students come in at different levels, Carney said. She supports expanding access to preschool to help bridge that gap.

Indiana’s S.B. 1 fills in some of these gaps. It includes support for second grade students, as well as funding for tutoring and summer school, which may help avoid the “scarlet letter” situation Carney described.

Additionally, the Monroe County Community School Corporation is using referendum funding from 2023 to provide affordable pre-K to community students.

There’s been pushback to retention in Indiana. The state passed changes to reading curriculum only last year, and many local parents and administrators are opposed to the bill’s provisions.

Clark, though, said she believes pushback will disappear once schools start seeing results. She hopes people will understand that retention is only one piece of the puzzle, and they’ll start to support the policy in the end.

WNBA no. 1 pick Caitlin Clark reveals why she was kicked out of PE in third grade

The announcement was made Monday night at the Brooklyn Academy of Music.

Caitlin Clark, the University of Iowa star who became the face of March Madness and has rewritten the college basketball record books , was selected as the first overall pick in the 2024 WNBA draft by the Indiana Fever on Monday night at the Brooklyn Academy of Music.

"Sitting at the table, obviously knowing where I'm going, you still get a little bit anxious when the commissioner walks out and says your name," Clark told "Good Morning America" on Tuesday after the big night. "It's a moment I've dreamed of since I was in second grade. To be there with my family at the table and share it with them was super special."

PHOTO: Iowa's Caitlyn Clark, left, poses for a photo with WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert after being selected first overall by the Indiana Fever during the first round of the WNBA basketball draft, April 15, 2024, in New York.

Clark shared a message for young girls, aspiring athletes and other kids who want to achieve their dreams: "The biggest thing is just dream big."

"I kinda just bet on myself and I always believed in myself. That's the biggest thing from a young age my parents always instilled confidence in me, they never told me I couldn't achieve something. But also, I worked really hard for it," Clark explained. "That's what I'm really proud of -- I earned it, I deserve it, nothing was ever given to me. More than anything, I just believe in myself and that's what I'm gonna try to take to the next level."

PHOTO: Iowa's Caitlin Clark, right, hugs her father Brent Clark after being selected first overall by the Indiana Fever during the first round of the WNBA basketball draft, April 15, 2024, in New York.

The Fever, which has already reported an increase in ticket sales and will have 36 of their 40 games broadcast this season, shared a video of the team and fans packed into Gainbridge Fieldhouse celebrating as Clark's name was called by Cathy Engelbert .

"I think it shows excitement in Indiana about not only basketball, but women's basketball. It's a state that really supports basketball so I'm lucky to be going to that organization," Clark told "GMA." She added, "there's a lot of people there in the arena just for a draft watch party -- I can't wait to get there and be playing games. I know it will be a packed crowd."

When it comes to competing at the next level, Clark said "I don't feel nervous. I feel just excited and ready."

"I felt ready for this challenge and that's why I decided to leave college. I could have come back for another year, but for me I feel like my game is ready. I feel from a maturity stand point, like, I'm ready for that," she continued. "There will definitely be some nerves once I get to Indianapolis, at the same time, I feel like I'm definitely prepared for it."

At times you can definitely feel the weight of the world on your shoulders, but more than anything -- it's a game -- How lucky am I?

The former Hawkeyes star guard, best known for her jaw-dropping 3-pointers and record-breaking scoring, recently surprised fans with an appearance on "Saturday Night Live," which she told "GMA" was more stressful than waiting for her name to be called Monday night.

VIDEO: Caitlin Clark talks being 1st pick of 2024 WNBA draft

"'SNL and it's not close," she said with a laugh. "I was so nervous. I have never been so nervous to do something in my life. Basketball on a national stage, easy. Before they rolled me onto the set my heart was pounding out of my chest."

When it comes to the possible pressures being hailed the public face for the sport , Clark handles it with grace and a calm demeanor.

"I feel like it's something that comes with it and honestly, I don't feel a lot of it," she said. "It's come with how I have carried myself and how I've gone about my business every single day...I always remind myself, this is a team sport and I have a lot of people to rely on. Outside of basketball, I always rely on my friends and family to be there and support me, those are the biggest things."

Clark continued, "At times you can definitely feel the weight of the world on your shoulders, but more than anything, to me this is fun. It's a game. Just enjoy it. How lucky am I?"

This season alone, the 22-year-old Iowa native broke the NCAA all-time scoring record which was untouched for more than 50 years, and became the NCAA women's basketball career scoring leader.

Clark grew up as the middle child with both a younger and older brother, which she said paired with a dad who played college sports, fueled her competitive nature from a young age.

"I always wanted to be like my older brother," she said. "He definitely pushed me, never took it easy on me. I think my parents could tell from a young age how competitive I was. The day he learned how to ride his bike, I'm like, 'I'm doing that too, mom and dad, take my training wheels off. Let's go.'"

In a surprise video message on "GMA," Clark's third grade teacher Kathleen Drey chimed in among the fanfare to congratulate Clark to say, "Just wanted to let you know how proud of you we all are at St. Francis. Seems like just yesterday you were in my class. My current students and I are now the biggest Fever fans. Go fever!"

Laughing at the "cute" video, Clark said, "She had to deal with me in third grade and I was so competitive. Sorry to her, I feel bad."

"They always had my parents come in and have meetings about me being too competitive in PE class," she recalled.

Earlier this year, Clark announced that she planned to forego her last season of college hoops to enter the WNBA draft.

"I'm just kind of ready for the next chapter and a new challenge in my life," Clark told "Good Morning America" co-anchor Robin Roberts in March. Caitlin Clark wrote future dreams down in 3rd grade. She's about to achieve one of them.

Caitlin Clark put her future dreams down in writing when she was a third grader at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic School, 12 dreams to be exact, each handwritten inside a cloud, every single one of them a lofty goal.

Her No. 1 dream was to be in the WNBA and her No. 12 dream was to have two Bernese mountain dogs. In between, she wrote that she wanted "to live in a huge mansion, to have three or four kids, to get married, to own a restaurant, to win the lottery, to be in a basketball movie, to be strong, to go (to college) on a basketball scholarship, to travel, travel across the whole world and to meet Maya Moore."

Kathleen Drey remembers assigning the project to her third-grade class but, to be honest, she didn't remember what Clark had written, not until ESPN showed Clark's third grade musings on the big screen during its live coverage of the women's NCAA tournament game between Iowa and West Virginia.

Start the day smarter. Get all the news you need in your inbox each morning.

"It was really cool just to see her handwriting and have it back up there again because it brought back memories," said Drey. Memories of a tiny Clark with a feisty spirit.

"She was very competitive. She was always very, very smart. The passion and the drive, the tenacity that you see on the court, you could see on the playground every day," said Drey. "At recess, it didn't matter what sport was in season, she was out there with all the boys hustling and not afraid to tell them her opinion."

All of Clark's elementary teachers at St. Francis of Assisi, from first through sixth grade, said they knew she was going to be something. They knew she was going to go big places. They knew she was going to make a difference. They just had no idea how far she would go.

"You never dream that she's going to take it to this level," said Jill Westholm, who taught Clark sixth grade math and science. "But her drive and her passion? You definitely knew that she was going to be successful at whatever she chose to do."

Or whatever she dreamed to do. As the WNBA draft plays out Monday night, Clark who shattered college basketball records while at Iowa, is predicted to be the No. 1 pick for the Indiana Fever.

"We always want our students to try their best, right? Just do your best, but she wanted to be the best," said Westholm. "Not just her best, she wanted to be the best. Always, in everything she did."

'That's that same girl that I see looking back at me in my classroom'

Clark's elementary school teachers have gathered in the library at St. Francis of Assisi in Des Moines, Iowa, to talk about their former student. It's three days before the NCAA women's Final Four and they are all decked out in black and yellow for the Hawkeyes.

Even Clark's fourth grade teacher, Sara Doyle, who is a huge fan of Iowa's rival Iowa State, has put on her one Hawkeyes T-shirt.

When Clark came back to visit her old elementary school in May, Doyle went out and bought the shirt. She wore it underneath a sweater that was all buttoned up, walked up to Clark and said, "The only person I will wear a Hawkeyes shirt for," then ripped open her sweater, "is for you."

"I love following her journey," Doyle said. "I am all about it."

When Doyle watches Clark on the basketball court and sees the faces she makes, she can picture that same girl sitting in her fourth-grade classroom making those same faces, whether she wanted to do better, was frustrated with herself or she was pumped up that she did well.

"I have a hard time when I watch her play basketball because I'm like, 'Wait, that's that same girl that I see looking back at me in my classroom,'" Doyle said. "Not this superstar."

But Clark is a superstar -- and not one of these women sitting in the library are surprised at all.

'Yep, this is where she belongs, with the boys, playing up a year'

Diane Murphy first saw the intense competitiveness in Clark when she taught her in first grade. Murphy had her students do something called Rocket Math, a program with levels of math facts meant to individually better each student.

In other words, students were supposed to be competing against themselves.

"She took it to a whole new level and it became very competitive," said Murphy. "She wanted to beat everybody's level in the classroom; but that's just her competitiveness."

That drive quickly transferred over to sports.

"She just went toe to toe with all the boys," said Clark's second grade teacher Katie Tigges. "It didn't matter who she was playing against or what she was doing, whether academics or outside at recess."

Tigges remembers at her class' biography fair, Clark picked up a basketball and started spinning it on one finger, for a long, long time. Tigges' mother was there to help."And my mom was like, 'Oh my gosh, she's going to be something someday,'" said Tigges. "I was like, 'She sure is.'"

Someday came quicker than anyone realized when, in third grade, Clark began playing basketball on the boys' team. Not only that, but Clark was playing up a year. Westholm's son is a year older than Clark and was playing basketball, too.

"And I tell you what, they did not want to lose, but they did," Westholm said. "Honestly I was kind of like, 'OK, I have to see this. Why is she playing against the boys?' And when I saw her, I was like, 'Yep, this is where she belongs, with the boys, playing up a year.'"

'It's not, 'What if I miss this shot?' It's 'What if I make it?''

Clark's high school coach Kristen Meyer first saw her playing at an AAU tournament the spring of her eighth-grade year. During a break in competition, Meyer heard a voice. "Hi, I'm Caitlin Clark." Clark has never been one to be shy or intimidated.

"I don't think I've ever seen Caitlin embarrassed. Which, it sounds strange, but just the confidence she has in herself, but also she's willing to be goofy, to make mistakes, she's willing to look stupid or say something wrong and that alone separates her," said Meyer. "Because if you're not worried about making mistakes or what someone's going to think or what if I miss a shot or fail, it opens up to be able to do so much more."

And while playing for Meyer at Dowling Catholic High in West Des Moines, Clark did so much.

While she never won a state title, Clark ranks No. 4 in Iowa high school career scoring with 2,547 points. Her AAU team, the All-Iowa Attack, won the 2018 Nike GEYBL national championship and was runner-up in 2017 and 2019.

Clark has so many tools on the court, it's hard to narrow down what makes her stand out. But, Meyer said, she immediately stood out. "No. 1, her court vision and her ability to, somehow, take in everything that she sees and process it and make a decision and then act on it immediately," said Meyer. "Her reaction time leads to the ability to be able to have incredible passes and to just kind of know where teammates are going to be."

Her shooting ability and her ball handling are obvious and incredible, but her mindset is something truly rare, said Meyer.

"You know, she's a competitor. She loves a challenge and she's fearless. I think a lot of athletes, especially female athletes, get a little bit afraid or get held back by what could go wrong," she said. "Caitlin is the type that is always thinking, 'What could go right.?' It's not, 'What if I miss this shot?' It's 'What if I make it?'"

Clark had a maturity on the court that many high school girls don't. She was also sometimes a tough critic of her teammates because it took time for her to realize not everyone sees the game the way that she does. Not everyone is as driven, is as committed, is just able to process as quickly and physically be able to do everything either that she does or she wants them to do.

"I tell you what, there were times when she would give a compliment to a teammate and I swear they grew two inches," said Meyer. "Because she was both hard on teammates because she had high expectations but then she would recognize when they met those expectations."

But Clark was never as hard on anyone as she was on herself.

'Can I be Caitlin Clark?'

The day Clark turned the corner from being a great player to having superstar potential came after a major disappointment. Meyer said it was the summer between her sophomore and junior year of high school. That was the summer that Clark didn't make the USA team.Clark had made the team the summer before, but she broke her pinky while trying out the next year. Clark never blamed it on the pinky. Instead, she told Meyer she simply didn't play well enough to make the team.

"Obviously, it's a very highly competitive process, so it's nothing to be ashamed of by any means," said Meyer. "But I think that's probably the first time in her life that she was kind of told, 'You're not good enough for this.'"

Clark's drive went into a whole other gear. Her focus became razor sharp. Her work ethic catapulted.

"I think she just kind of thought, 'Well, I'm never going to have that happen again. You know, I'm going to be so good that they can't leave me off,'" said Meyer. "And it's not about being mad about it, but it's just she knew she had a higher ceiling and she wanted to kind of see how good she could get."

Monday night, as Clark's No. 1 dream on her third-grade list comes true, the world knows how good she became. What they don't know is just how much more greatness she has in her or what level she will take her game to in the WNBA.

Her former teachers want her to know a few things as she launches her professional basketball career.

"I hope she knows how much she has elevated the game for women everywhere," said Drey. "I just hope she knows that and recognizes that."

Doyle added: "I would say to her that we are so proud of her, but just stay true to who she is. Her drive, her motivation, her faithfulness, that is what's gotten her to this point. And I would say, keep that in your heart, know where you came from, know the people who love you. So no matter what big stage you go to, no matter how famous you are, stay true to your roots and know what got you to that point."

Tigges is in the middle of doing her class's biography fair now, the one where Clark stood spinning a basketball on her finger. And some of her students have asked, "Can I be Caitlin Clark?"

"It kind of gave me goosebumps because there's not a book about her right now, but someday there will be," she said. "And someday a kid in my class could be Caitlin Clark."

All of her teachers say the Clark people see being interviewed is the same person she's always been. She isn't putting on an act or putting on airs. She just wants to be the best.

"It's kind of a dream as a teacher to be able to know where your former students are. I wish I knew where all my former students were," Westholm said. "And to be able to see her reach her goal on the national stage, we get to follow her journey. And that's really exciting."

WNBA no. 1 pick Caitlin Clark reveals why she was kicked out of PE in third grade

VIDEO: Caitlin Clark talks being 1st pick of 2024 WNBA draft

Caitlin Clark, the University of Iowa star who became the face of March Madness and has rewritten the college basketball record books , was selected as the first overall pick in the 2024 WNBA draft by the Indiana Fever on Monday night at the Brooklyn Academy of Music.

"Sitting at the table, obviously knowing where I'm going, you still get a little bit anxious when the commissioner walks out and says your name," Clark told "Good Morning America" on Tuesday after the big night. "It's a moment I've dreamed of since I was in second grade. To be there with my family at the table and share it with them was super special."
