15 Fun, Hands-On Activities for Learning About 2D and 3D Shapes

A selection of fun, hands-on math activities for learning about 2D and 3D shapes.

When we think of early mathematical learning, we typically think firstly of numbers. But there is a whole other world of mathematics to enjoy and explore and that is the world of shapes! This post includes fifteen ideas for learning about 2D and 3D shapes (and their properties) in fun and ‘hands on’ ways!

Learning about Shapes: 2D and 3D Shapes Learning Activities

15 Fun, Hands-On Activities for Learning About 2D and 3D shapes

Ideas for Learning About 2-Dimensional Shapes

Between the ages of two and four years, children typically begin to learn the names of simple 2D shapes incidentally; generally learning about circles, squares and triangles to begin with. We see them in picture books, on TV shows and in every day life (does anyone else’s toddler insist on their sandwiches being cut into a certain shape?) In their first years of school children will build on this knowledge, learning about rectangles, ovals, hexagons, pentagons and octagons, just to name a few.

1. Head Off On a Shape Hunt

A great way to kick start learning about shapes (whether it be at school or home) is with a ‘shape hunt’ – exploring and identifying shapes in our environment and everyday life. You can go on a shape hunt around your house, backyard, classroom or neighbourhood. Older children can take a checklist or paper to record their findings on, while younger children will enjoy discussing what you see as you go. Photographing the shapes you find is another great idea, with the photos being perfect for compiling into your very own shape book.

2. Popstick Play

Learning about Shapes: 2D and 3D Shapes Learning Activities

Popsticks and matchsticks are such versatile learning materials. They make a great resource for creating 2D shapes.

3. Self Correcting Popstick Puzzle

Learning about Shapes: 2D and 3D Shapes Learning Activities

Take the above activity one step further and make a self correcting puzzle by using the one colour for each shape, writing the name of the shape on each popstick and including the number of sides/corners. This makes a great busy bag .

4. Pipe Cleaner Creations

Learning about Shapes: 2D and 3D Shapes Learning Activities

Pipe cleaners provide a great workout for finger muscles. They can be bent and twisted to create a variety of 2D shapes. As a variation, make the shapes larger by using one pipe cleaner for each side of the shape.

5. Playdough Fun

Learning about Shapes: 2D and 3D Shapes Learning Activities

Playdough is also a useful tool for exploring shapes. Adding a set of geometric cookie cutters ( like this one ) to playdough play is a super easy way to add shapes to your day.

6. Shape Collages

Learning about Shapes: 2D and 3D Shapes Learning Activities

Kindergarten and school aged children will have lots of fun creating pictures with shapes. I created these two as example,s using a variety of shapes cut from textured papers and buttons.

7. Pretty Pattern Blocks

Learning about Shapes: 2D and 3D Shapes Learning Activities

Pattern blocks are one of my favourite classroom materials. Not only are children learning about 2D shapes when they play with them, but also other mathematical concepts such as symmetry, tessellation, pattern, sorting, counting and so much more. This activity could either be left unstructured for the children to make their own pictures, patterns and shapes, or you can use pattern block activity cards as a guide.

8. Sing About Shapes

Here’s a cute little song to help preschoolers learn 2D shapes. It works best with a group of children, with everyone holding a shape (sing to the tune of If You’re Happy and You Know It).

If you’re holding a square stand up! If you’re holding a square stand up! If you’re holding a square, if you’re holding a square If you’re holding a square stand up. Repeat with other shapes

Fun Ideas for Learning About 3-Dimensional Shapes

9. Fantastic Feely Bags

When I’m introducing the topic of shapes to my class, I always start with a ‘feely bag’. The idea being that the children feel the shapes in the bag without looking, trying to identify each shape using only their sense of touch. We discuss – How does it feel? Does it have pointy corners? Does it feel round? Once the children are familiar with names of the shapes, it’s fun to guess the shape they’re holding before revealing it!

10. Wonderful Wooden Blocks

Learning about Shapes: 2D and 3D Shapes Math Learning Activities

Generally speaking in the first year of school you could expect your child to learn the shapes pictured above; rectangular prism, pyramid, cylinder, cone, cube and sphere. 3D wooden blocks are a great resource for talking about the features of 3D shapes (and the 2D shapes they are made up of).

11. Test It: Stack, Roll or Slide?

As children learn 3D shapes, it’s fun to explore how they move and interact with each other. Set up a simple ramp and test each shape to see if it rolls down the hill or slides? Next, test each shape to see if it can be stacked easily on top of another shape. Explore your child’s understanding of why a shape does (or does not) roll, slide or stack.

12. 3D Playdough Shapes

Learning about Shapes: 2D and 3D Shapes Math Learning Activities

Add matchsticks to playdough and invite children to create 2D and 3D shapes.

13. 3D Shape Models

Moulding 3D Shapes from playdough or kinetic sand is a fun, hands-on challenge.

14. Nifty Nets

Learning about Shapes: 2D and 3D Shapes Math Learning Activities

School aged children can begin to explore the concept of ‘nets’. A net is a 3D shape flattened out. These plastic polydrons are a fantastic tool to teach this concept. Making your own die cube is a great place to start! (Once again we see 3D shapes in our everyday life). Here’s a link to a free die template printable from Teachers Pay Teachers.

15. 3D Shape Rhyme

Finally here’s a simple 3D shape rhyme to help children connect the name of the shape to real life objects.

3D Shapes are fat not flat A cone is like a party hat A sphere is a bouncy ball A prism is a building tall A cylinder is like a can of pop A cube is like the dice you drop 3D shapes are here and there 3D shapes are everywhere!

What are your favourite activity ideas for learning about 2D and 3D shapes?

How Do You Teach Geometry in a Fun Way?

One thing that I’ve shared from my teaching journey is that I spent the first four years of my career teaching 2nd grade.

And I remember that teaching geometry to 2nd grade students was so fun and rewarding!

I had just as much fun with it as they did. So, here are general tips I want to share to help you get started:

  • Use hands-on activities and games . For example, you could have students create shapes with construction paper or use manipulatives such as pattern blocks to explore geometric shapes and patterns.
  • Embrace technology with your math lessons. We may feel sick of using devices for learning since 2020, but the reality is that they can really jazz up your geometry lesson. In fact, later in the post, I have some online games and apps you’ll enjoy.
  • Allow students to build 3-dimensional shapes using blocks with a partner or small groups. Remember, hands-on is great for teaching geometry. And kids will have fun working with their friends!

I cannot stress the hands-on aspect enough as you teach geometry to 2nd grade. Since learning shapes is a visual skill with lots of abstract concepts included, your kids will need concrete examples to help them master the foundation of geometry.

What is Geometry for 2nd Grade?

No matter what set of state standards you use, most 2nd grade math curriculums will cover the following geometry concepts:

  • two and three dimensional shapes
  • congruency, symmetry, area and perimeter
  • vertices, faces, and edges
  • polygons vs. non-polygons

Since 2nd grade geometry covers shapes and space, be prepared to help students tell the difference between flat and 3D shapes.

These are just the basics that I wanted to cover, so now we can dive into the nitty-gritty details for how to teach geometry to 2nd grade in a fun way.

#1- Engage Your Students in Math Talks

One of the game-changer activities I used to introduce students to geometry was with math talks.

I would show them pictures of real-life objects and scenes, then students had to identify different 2D and 3D shapes they noticed.

shapes activity grade 2

Not only did these interesting math talk sessions give my students confidence in using math vocabulary correctly, but it also helped them identify shapes in a non-intimidating way.

Now of course, I would review basic shapes such as circles, squares, triangles, and rectangles. Next, I would challenge students to locate different shapes in the pictures.

Math Talks also works an a partner activity when teaching virtually. So, if you teach online, you can have engaging math talks through Zoom breakout rooms as well!

#2- Enjoy Shapes Scavenger Hunts

If you’ve spent any time on this site, you know I love a good scavenger hunt.

They present a wonderful way to teach geometry to 2nd grade.

By creating a scavenger hunt, the students can explore their surroundings and practice their geometry skills. For example, have the students look for shapes in the classroom or school hallways . They can also look for examples of symmetry and shapes in magazines or picture books. As the students explore their environment, they can record their answers on a worksheet or chart.

Through this activity, your students can learn about different shapes, their properties, and how to measure them. In addition, it can help them develop their problem-solving and critical thinking skills.  It will also make learning geometry more enjoyable and engaging for the students.

#3–Play FREE Geometry Apps

Even before COVID forced full-time digital learning on everyone, I loved giving my students computer or iPad time playing learning games.

You’ll be surprised at how many great math apps you have to choose from when it comes to free games that review skills.

shapes activity grade 2

Of course, finding them will depend on what type of device you’re using. To help you get the ball-rolling, I recommend the free geometry game above. It doesn’t have an exciting or flashy title, but my students never let that stop them from enjoying it.

Here’s a review from another teacher who enjoys this game: “ This is a great geometry app for beginners. This is motivating for students and they learn so much from it. It teaches basic terminology and concept. “

#4–Review Shapes with Geometric Puzzles

Here we go with our first fun hands-on activity! I can’t imagine teaching geometry without block puzzles!

shapes activity grade 2

When shopping for these kind of math manipulatives , I always looked for the ones that had flash cards showing different designs students could make with the shapes.

To fully connect it to your shapes lessons, you can have students write a paragraph to go with their design. The paragraph must include detailed sentences describing the different polygons used.

OR depending on how much time you have, allow students to partner up and verbally describe their creation to a classmate. The mini-presentation should include shape names and other attributes like, “My dragon has an octagon head with 8 vertices.”

#5–Play Geometry “I Spy”

Ever wondered what quick learning activity you could do during a short transition? Well, my friend this is definitely one of them!

When my students were packed up and waiting on the end-of-the-day bell to ring, we would play this as a whole group.

I pulled names that were on popsicles sticks and had one student at a time come to the front to describe a shape they saw somewhere in the classroom.

But they would begin with “I spy with my little eye…” The other kids had to raise their hand to take guesses on what their classmate was describing.

The main rule I implemented was that they HAD to use “geometry talk” to describe their item.

#6–Use FREE Digital Shapes Lessons and Activities

Although I already recommended using free math apps to teach geometry to 2nd grade, this one is slightly different.

Animated games can be great, but sometimes you need students to complete non-game activities that can be just as engaging.

This is where interesting online lessons come to the rescue. Things like:

  • digital escape rooms
  • mystery picture activities online
  • self-checking digital review, etc.

shapes activity grade 2

As always, I got you covered my friend! This quick self-checking 2D and 3D shapes activity allows students to review polygons vs. non-polygons, as well as, the names of different shapes. And it’s completely FREE.

#7–Make Shapes with Play Dough

The seventh way to teach geometry to 2nd grade involves a substance that some people think is only for Kindergarteners.

But I’m here to tell you that it’s not just for Kinders…I’m talking about play dough!

Playing with play dough can be a fun way to teach geometry to 2nd grade students. It allows them to get creative and explore shapes in a tangible way. Students can use the dough to make circles, squares, triangles, and other shapes.

They can also use the dough to create 3D objects such as cubes, pyramids, and spheres. By manipulating the dough, students can learn about the properties of shapes such as their sides, angles, and faces.

This activity can also help students understand how different shapes can fit together to create larger shapes. By exploring these concepts with play dough, 2nd grade students can develop a better understanding of geometry and its application in the real world.

#8–Match 2D Shapes with their 3D Shapes Counterparts

One of the challenges my former students had to overcome was understanding that many 3D shapes had the face of certain 2D shapes.

That’s when I realized that sorting and matching these counterparts would make a great math center activity.

shapes activity grade 2

Just in case your students have the same challenge, incorporate any of these matching activities to help them with this skill:

  • Matching 3D blocks or shapes with their flat/2D version
  • Task cards with images of both 2D and 3D shapes for students to match
  • Go-Fish card games where students have to find the match
  • SCOOT games that reinforce this concept

You could even do a version of “write the room” where your kiddos walk around identifying which shape is the “face” of a certain three-dimensional figure.

#9–Introduce Geometry Read-Alouds

Combining books with math is my jam! I love using math read-alouds to jazz up the learning.

What Read-Alouds Teach Geometry to 2nd Grade?

These math books help reinforce important geometry concepts with fun story-telling:

  • If You Were a Quadrilateral by Molly Cece Barlow Blaisdell and Francesca Carabelli
  • The Greedy Triangle by Marilyn Burns
  • If You Were a Polygon by Marcie Aboff
  • Perimeter, Area, and Volume: A Monster Book of Dimensions by David Adler
  • Square (Book 1 of The Shapes Trilogy) by Mac Barnett
  • Triangle (The Shapes Trilogy) –same author as above
  • Circle (Book 3 of The Shapes Trilogy) –same author as above
  • City Shapes by Diana Murphy

#10–Use Engaging No Prep Geometry Worksheets

Ok, full disclaimer here–I am one of those teachers who can’t stand just giving out worksheets, especially for math. To me, students learn best when they have fun hands-on activities or games.

BUT the reality is that we sometimes need great worksheets for things like:

  • early finishers
  • morning / bell ringer work, etc.

So, even though I prefer to teach geometry to 2nd grade using manipulatives, I also keep standards-aligned worksheets ready to use.

shapes activity grade 2

These print-and-go geometry worksheets cover a range of concepts related to shapes to 2nd graders.

I especially like how they are simple, but still rigorous. That way, students can complete them independently without getting frustrated at the challenge level.

#11–Play Geometry Bingo

Speaking of simple yet rigorous fun, another great way to teach geometry to 2nd grade is with bingo games!

shapes activity grade 2

Most bingo games are pretty straightforward, which is great because you don’t have to spend a lot of time teaching your students how to play them.

Plus, it gives everyone a break from having to complete worksheets or task cards. In addition to this, you could even break your students into groups of 4 and have them play geometry bingo as a math center activity.

#12–Review Angles with Charades

The twelfth way you could practice geometry concepts with your kiddos is to play what I call “Angles Charades.”

After you’ve taught them the different angles and their degrees, you can write these angles on index cards, then call students to the front of the class to hold up their arms to represent how it should look to the class.

The only student who will see the index card is the one at the front; the rest of the students must raise their hands to say what angle or degree is being acted out by their classmate.

Another way I’ve played it is:

  • I stand at the front of the class with the index cards that have the angles.
  • All the students stand up and wait for me to call out the different degress.
  • Then they hold up their arms to show me what the angle should look like.

Either version you choose offers a quick way to review geometry angles while allowing students to get out of their seats.

#13–Build Shapes and Angles with LEGOS

Along with the other geometry math center ideas from this list, you can add LEGOS to the mix. Remember how I said hands-on learning is best? Well, this is one of my favorites!

I like to buy those mini LEGO sets from The Dollar Tree where the LEGOS come in a storage box for only $1.25 each.

Having a class set of them is great because you’ll use them for so many different things! One example is to call out the names of different polygons and have students build them using their LEGOS.

#14–Watch Interesting Polygon Videos on YouTube

If a picture is worth a thousand words, then videos must be worth ten thousand!

There are so many interesting geometry videos on YouTube for kids that you can access completely free. If your school doesn’t allow YouTube–like mine–you can copy the video link and show it through Safe Share .

#15–Create Shape Collages

Last, but not least, I think it’s pretty cool and fun to combine math with art. Geometry makes this super easy since you can create collages out of shapes.

shapes activity grade 2

Challenge your students to create images using different shapes. You can even extend the activity by having them write a story to go with their picture. These make great bulletin board displays and a fun hands-on way to practice geometry!

More Ways to Teach About Shapes

Geometry is an important subject to teach second grade students, because it helps them learn problem solving, spatial reasoning, and other skills that are critical for mathematics learning.

When you use hands-on activities, games and visual aids, you can help your kiddos feel confident and happy learning this math skill.

So, which of the 15 ideas in this post is your favorite? Let me know in the comments below. Until then, Happy Teaching 🦋

2D Shapes Geometry Activities

Teaching 2D shapes in 2nd grade is a critical standard and life skill. 2D shapes are found everywhere in the real world. It’s important to help students understand 2D shapes and their differences from 3D shapes. Today, I’m sharing several ways to make your math lessons engaging and hands-on with these 2D shapes geometry activities and 2D shapes crafts for 2nd grade.

2D Shapes Geometry Activities

What Are 2D Shapes?

2D shapes are flat plane figures that are made up of sides and vertices. They are called plane figures because they stay in only one single plane. 2D shapes have only 2 dimensions, length and width. These shapes do not have any depth or thickness, which is what makes them different from 3D shapes.

A few examples of 2D shapes are circles, squares, triangles, rectangles, ovals, rhombuses, pentagons, hexagons, and octagons.

2D Shapes Anchor Chart

When introducing a new mathematical concept, one of my favorite strategies is to create a 2D shapes anchor chart. Creating a whole group 2D shapes anchor chart allows students to understand the concept deeper, see visual aides, and understand the mathematical vocabulary related to the concept.

Geometry 2D Shape Anchor Chart

After creating the whole group 2D shapes anchor chart that goes on display for the entire math unit, you can guide students to create a mini version of the 2D shapes anchor chart to keep in their math journal. This is a great way to help students revisit the information and creates a reference that they can keep in their journal throughout the unit and the year.

Interactive math journals serve as great spiral review as well. Your young learners can flip to the page they need to review any concept throughout the year. This also helps with problem-solving as students know to look in their math journal for help before asking the teacher.

Now that you know more about what 2D shapes are and how to introduce these new shapes to your students, read on for some simple ideas for hands-on learning activities and fun 2D shapes geometry practice.

1. Constructing 2D Shapes

I like to give students a hands-on way to create and work with 2D shapes at the beginning of our 2D shapes unit. One of my favorite ways to do this is to have them construct 2D shapes using popsicle sticks and pom pom balls.

The popsicle sticks represent the sides of the shapes and the pom pom balls are used to identify the vertices in a shape. You can see exactly how to do this with students in my Math Manipulatives and Tools for Teaching Geometry blog post .

Building 2D shapes with popsicle sticks and pom-poms

2. Sorting Polygons

When learning about 2D shapes, it’s important for students to understand what a polygon is. Polygons are flat, 2D plane shapes with straight sides that are closed. This means the sides are all connected and there is no space to “escape.” Polygons can have any number of sides, but they must be straight. If a shape has curved sides, it is not a polygon.

To help students understand which shapes are polygons and not polygons, you can use this polygon pocket chart sorting activity from my Geometry Guided Math Unit .

Polygon vs Not Polygon pocket chart sort

3. Incorporating Real Life 2D Shapes Examples

As I mentioned, 2D shapes are everywhere in the real world. Therefore, it’s important to provide students with opportunities to see shapes in the form of real objects around them. When learning about 2D shapes, you can take your students for a walk around the school or outside to identify the various 2D shapes found.

You can reinforce real life 2D shapes practice in the classroom by incorporating real life objects in your mini lessons, math stations, or independent practice activities. This Roll & Color activity is a fun way for students to familiarize themselves with real-world 2D shapes.

Roll & Color real-life 2D shapes activity

4. Irregular Shapes vs. Regular Shapes

In 2nd grade students learn to identify regular 2D shapes up to a dodecagon, which is a shape with 12 sides and vertices. A regular shape is a shape in which all sides are the same length and all angles are equal.

Oftentimes, shapes can be irregular. This means that the sides are not equal in length and/or the angles are different. While irregular shapes must still have straight sides and be closed, students in 2nd grade must learn to identify the differences in regular and irregular shapes. Using interactive journal activities for determining regular and irregular shapes is a great way to put this into practice.

5. Constructing 2D Shapes With Pattern Blocks

Another one of my favorite 2D shapes geometry activities is using pattern blocks to construct 2D shapes. This gives students more exposure to the overall shape and its attributes. As they construct, they also become more familiar with the individual shapes that make up the larger shape.

This Composing Shapes Mat activity from my Geometry Guided Math Unit encourages critical thinking and problem-solving as students must read the shape card and determine how to compose the 2D shape using the smaller shapes in the right quantities.

6. 2D Shapes Writing Activities

A big part of mathematical understanding is being able to explain math concepts and write about them. Whenever you can incorporate writing into your math block, it’s a win-win.

This Emoji Shape Craft is one of my favorite ways to incorporate writing into my 2D shapes lessons.

7. Using Technology

Using technology in your 2D shapes geometry lessons is a sure way to keep your students engaged and excited. One way to incorporate technology into your 2D shapes lessons is to use the ChatterPix app to allow your students to share their writing.

This free download can be found in the Apple or GooglePlay stores. It’s super easy to use too! Students simply take a photo of their writing math craft, use their finger to draw a mouth on the photo, and record themselves reading their writing piece. It really makes the writing piece come to life and shows each student’s personality and creativity!

ChatterPix takes your basic writing crafts from this…

8. Shape Riddles

Another 2D shapes geometry activity students love is Shape Riddles ! Students will read the shape riddle and work together to solve it. Then they’ll find the matching 2D shape card based on the shape’s attributes.

You can even split students into pairs or teams and have a race to see which team can solve the most riddles the fastest.

Why is Geometry important?

Real life geometry shape example

The universe is built of shapes and geometry is the mathematics of it. But often the geometric field of mathematics is neglected. The importance of geometry is not realized until it gets abstract and one deal with geometry proofs examples or geometry theorems.

The field of geometry is broad and has many applications. Often, problems of other field become easier to solve when it is represented geometrically. The study of geometric relationships is used in the field of architecture and landscaping. It is seen that the many people think better visually. Geometry makes visualization logical.

Real life example of square

Moreover, geometry connects many other fields of mathematics. For example, interpretation of bar graph involves finding the area of a rectangle. Fractions are better understood through the representation of geometric pictures. Equal sized squares are used to represent tens, hundreds, and thousands. Coordinate geometry is used to analyze algebraic relationships. Therefore, geometry is one area of mathematics that is used most widely in learning math and also other fields.

The kids are introduced to geometry math during early school years. The geometry common core math standards involve an introduction to geometry in prekindergarten. Discovering geometry helps children develop deductive problem-solving skills.

Progression of Geometry:

Related-below grade standard.

Grade 1: In this grade, children develop skills to reason with shapes and attributes. They understand basic geometric shapes definition. They analyze shapes from their defining attributes, like number of sides. They compose two dimensional and three-dimensional shapes to make larger composite shapes. They learn to partition rectangles and circle into equal shares. They learn the vocabulary related to partitionings like quarters, fourths and halves.

2D and 3D shape example

Grade 2: The kids learn to identify and draw shapes according to the given attributes. They learn to draw shapes as per the specified number of faces or geometry angles. They are able to identify cubes, pentagons, hexagons, quadrilateral, and triangles. They also learn to partition a rectangle into same-sized squares. They then count these squares to determine the size of the rectangle. The kids learn to partition rectangles and circles into two to four equal shares. They describe the partitioned shapes using the geometry words like half of, third of, thirds, halves. They understand the wholes as four fourths, three-thirds, and two halves.

Related-above Grade Standard

Grade 3: The kids understand the relationship between shapes according to their attributes. They learn about the larger category shapes with shared attributes. For example, the shapes with four sides are called quadrilaterals. They partition shapes into equal parts. They learn to express the area of each part as a unit fraction of the whole. For example, they partition a shape into three equal parts and describe the area of each part as 1/3 of the area of the whole.

An Overview: Grade 2 Geometry

Attributes of shapes:  The kids continue to build on their geometric understanding from grade 1. They gradually develop an analytical thinking from the descriptive thinking developed in grade 1. They learn to recognize shapes by their geometric properties. They recognize a shape by number of angles or number of sides. They also learn to use geometric words like face, edge, vertex in their descriptions.

They learn that a quadrilateral is a four-sided closed figure. The shapes like square, rectangle and trapezoid are quadrilaterals. They also learn about polygons like pentagons, hexagons and 3D shape cube.

regular polygon

Create and compose shapes: The kids learn to identify different polygons and also learn their names. They recognize the polygons by counting the number of sides or vertices. They learn to identify polygons like pentagons, hexagons, heptagons, octagons, quadrilaterals, and triangles. They perform activities that broaden their understanding and clarify the common misconceptions. For example, they create and compose shapes using sticks of various lengths. They manipulate and construct two-dimensional shapes on geoboards. This helps them deepen their newly learned skills.

Geoboard

Relate 2D and 3D geometric shapes: The kids relate two-dimensional and three-dimensional shapes. They create 3D geometric shapes using sticks or toothpicks. They create shapes like cube using sticks. They count the number of faces and the number corners of the constructed shape. They identify geometry angles like right angles formed at corners. They also learn to relate the face of 3D geometric shapes to the 2D shapes. For example, they identify the face of a cube as a square.

Partition shapes: The kids partition composite shapes and explore relationships between parts and wholes. They describe the parts as halves, thirds or fourths. They describe the wholes as two halves, three-thirds and four fourths. They use geometry puzzles like tangram to understand the composition of a shape. They manipulate the pieces of puzzles to explore different ways to compose new shapes. For example, they notice that smaller shapes can be repositioned in multiple ways to form a variety of larger shapes. For example, they use two right triangles to form a square. They form a variety of shapes like parallelogram, trapezoid, and rhombus on geometry puzzles.

The kids further explore their understanding of shapes using pattern blocks. They experiment with pattern blocks. For example, they create hexagon from six triangle shape blocks. This develops an understanding that the hexagon can be partitioned into six equal triangles. Alternatively, they realize that a trapezoid is composed of three equal sized triangles. In this case, each triangle described as a third.

Partitioning shapes

A variety of partitioned shapes in different orientations is presented to kids to deepen their understanding. For example, the kids are asked to determine if the partitioned portion of a shape represents half of the figure. The kids perform various activities to understand the concept. For example, they assemble the parts to form a whole. In which, they assemble two equal parts of a circle to form a whole circle.  The kids practice partitioning circles and rectangles on geoboards. The geometry lessons on partitioning circles serve as the foundation for telling time to a half hour or a quarter hour on an analog clock.

Geometry Games for 2nd Graders

Geometry games can help achieve a number of instructional goals. The games can prepare settings in which the kids visualize or create a shape. The games enable the educator to assess the how well the kids have understood a concept. It also enables them to get an impression of how kids apply their knowledge under different scenarios.

Here are two popular geometric learning games for 2nd graders:

Tangrams: Geometry Problem Solver

What is tangram.

Tangram is a Chinese puzzle consisting of 7 tans or shapes. The kids have to arrange these shapes to recreate a given shape.

Tangrams

The rule of the puzzle requires all the shapes to be used without overlapping. Playing with tangrams help kids improve their spatial understanding. They also learn about spatial rotation skills the tracing to the opposite player. The opposite player needs to solve the picture by fitting in the 7 tans correctly. A timer can be set before the players begin placing the shapes in the outline. Whoever solves the puzzle first, wins the game. The players can also create geometry formula sheet consisting of the ways the tans are used to create any shape.

This game particularly enables kids to think critically about the shapes around them. It also develops their problem-solving skills.

Search and Show

This game requires 4 or more players and is usually played with an even number of players. The game is played in teams with each team having at least 2 players each. Before the start of the game, a bowl is filled with paper chits, which have different shapes written on them. Each team goes in turns. One player from the team will pick a chit at random. He/She will read the shape written on it without speaking it aloud. Then he or she will describe the properties of the shape to his/her team member. The team members will have to guess the name of the shape. E.g. – If the shape written on the chit is square, then the player can say that the shape has 4 sides and all sides are equal.

Geometry games using paper chits

The team which is able to guess the shape in the least amount of time wins the game. This game particularly helps the kids remember the different characteristics of each shape. And also gain confidence in terms of communicating the knowledge gained by them as part of learning geometry.

2d Shapes Worksheets for Grade 2

2d shapes worksheets for grade 2 are a perfect way to introduce the idea of multiple shapes that kids observe every day. 2d shapes refer to two-dimensional figures that can be drawn on the x and y-axis or the horizontal and vertical axis.

Benefits of Grade 2 Math 2d Shapes Worksheets

The benefit of 2d shapes worksheets for grade 2 is that the kids will get equipped with the knowledge of two-dimensional shapes, which are rectangle, square, rhombus, star etc. These shapes are what they must have observed in everyday life. Thus they will learn the importance of these shapes while figuring them out, drawing them, analyzing and completing the shapes given to them. These grade 2 math worksheets will enable developing a strong base for the study of geometry ahead. Kids will find it interesting to discover the names of all the shapes and also to find out how each one is different from the other.

2d shape activities for the classroom.

shapes activity grade 2

When it comes time to teach 2D shapes in the classroom, I often run short on ideas, or I feel like I just continue doing the same thing year after year. I mean, how many ways can one introduce, create, and describe a square… am I right?! So, to help get out of that 2D shape rut, I have some ideas to share with you!

Create Something Fun

One thing I like to do with students is have them create something fun out of 2D shapes. This allows students to study different types of shapes, analyze and describe the shape’s attributes, and create a fun project!

{Click HERE for Shape Frankenstein}

Shape Frankenstein: 1st Step

The first thing I have students do is cut out all of their pieces. This gives students the chance to study each shape separately before joining together. Students write the name of the 2D shape. Then students count the vertices and the sides. Students record all of this onto their recording sheet .

shape frankenstein math activity halloween 1

Shape Frankenstein: 2nd Step

After recording all of the 2D shapes and their attributes, students assemble their Frankenstein. This Shape Frankenstein makes for the perfect Halloween display!

Shape Frankenstein: Alternate Step

If you want to skip the cutting and gluing altogether, this printable option may be the perfect activity for you! Students are still analyzing and describing 2D shapes, they are just doing so as they color!

2D Shape Anchor Chart

One thing I like to create with the students is a 2D shape anchor chart. We discuss each shape, its name, number of sides, and number of vertices as I add them to the chart. This is on display throughout the shape unit so that students know how to spell and identify each of the 2D shapes.

No Prep Shape Activity

It’s time to open up those teacher cabinets and see what you have stored up! I am always trying to use those random objects I’ve had stored for years and years. For this activity, I found popsicle sticks and foam stickers. Students create 2 quadrilaterals but any shape with sides would work! To create their shapes, students glued down the popsicle sticks. Then they used the stickers to represent and count the shape’s vertices. After creating their shapes, students wrote sentences to describe the shape’s attributes.

Best part? You don’t have to create, print, or prep anything in advance? Hands-on and no-prep? Yes, please!

3d Shapes Worksheets Properties and Names of 3d Shapes

Welcome to our 3d Shapes Worksheets page. Here you will find our selection of free shape worksheets to help you child to name and learn some of the properties of the 3d shapes they will meet at 2nd grade.

The main focus on this page is the identification and properties of different types of 3d shapes: cubes, cuboids, prisms, pyramids, cones, cylinders and spheres.

Children also start to look more closely at the properties shapes have to categorise them. Symmetry is introduced at this level, and children learn to find lines of symmetry by folding shapes or using mirrors. Children are encouraged to look more closely at shapes to recognise the differences between how the shapes are made up. Curved sides and straight sides in 2 dimensions, and curved and flat surfaces in 3 dimensions are identified.

At a 2nd grade level, children should learn to:

  • categorise triangles into right, equilateral and isosceles special cases;
  • categorise members of the quadrilateral family according to their properties;
  • identify a range of 3d shapes such as cylinders, spheres, cones, prisms and cuboids;
  • identify lines of symmetry;
  • identify a shape which has been flipped or folded.

3D Shapes Worksheets

Need to be able to identify 3d shapes?

Looking for some worksheets to help you to identify some common 3d shapes?

Need to know the properties of common 3d shapes?

Then these 3d shapes worksheets should hopefully be what you are looking for!

The worksheets and resources on this page should help you to identify a range of 3d shapes and give your child an opportunity to practice their 3d shape knowledge with some useful worksheets.

There is a range of worksheets - a selection of identifying, shading, naming and finding the properties of 3d shapes.

Using the sheets in this section will help your child to:

  • name a range of 3d shapes;
  • identify different types of pyramids, prisms, cuboids, cones, cylinders and spheres;
  • learn some simple properties of 3d shapes: faces, edges and vertices;
  • recognise some 3d shapes in different orientations.

At a 2nd grade level, we do not need to know the precise shape names for pyramids and prisms, it is enough to know that a hexagonal pyramid is a type of pyramid, and a pentagonal prism is a type of prism.

Why do some 3d shapes have different numbers for the faces and edges?

This is a really good question and it has everything to do with how the term 'faces' is defined.

  • Some mathematicians have decided that faces can only be flat and cannot be curved (so they are referred to as curved surfaces NOT faces).
  • Some mathematicians have decided that faces can either be flat or curved so curved surfaces ARE faces.
  • An edge is where two faces meet, so if you have decided that the curved surface is not a face, then there is NO EDGE.
  • However, If you decide that a curved surface is a face, then there IS AN EDGE where the faces meet.

Personally, I'm in the 'curved surface is a face' camp, but go with whatever definition your teachers advise you!

3d Shapes Worksheets

These 3d shapes worksheets have been divided into 4 different sections.

The first section is all about different types of triangles - equilateral, isosceles, scalene, as well as right, acute and obtuse triangles.

The second section worksheets involve tracing and naming common 2d shapes that you will find on this page.

The third section is the hardest section and involves trying to draw different 2d shapes using a dotty grid to help. This section is a great way to extend more able mathematicians.

Due to the differences in shape terminology in US and UK, some of the worksheets have 2 different versions.
