Using the Smarty date function

Do you want to display the current date or month in your email document or template? Or do you want to show different content to adult recipients?

To display a date in your publications, you use the smarty.now function. This function calculates the number of seconds that have passed since 1-1-1970. The date_format modifier is then used to convert these seconds to a human readable value.

By default, Windows formats dates with slashes (3/23/16). However, if you want to use a different format for the date, such as using periods instead of slashes (3.23.16), that’s easy to change in Windows' settings. You can also change the format of the time.

The format of the date and time affects the clock on the Taskbar, as shown above. It also affects programs you run in Windows, such as Excel, unless you override the format in the program itself. For example, you might want use slashes on the date shown on the Taskbar, but use periods in the dates you enter in Excel .

We’ll show you how to select a different format and how to create a custom format for the date and time in Windows 10, 8.1, and 7. Accessing the basic choices for changing the date and time format is slightly different in each version of Windows, so we'll discuss those procedures separately in the first three sections below. However, entering a custom format for the date and time is done the same way in all three Windows versions. So, follow the steps in one of the first three sections, depending on which version of Windows you are using, and then continue with the last section.

As an example in this article, we’ll show you how to change the date format, but changing the time format is a similar process, and we’ll mention where you can do that as well.

If you’re using Windows 10, click on the Search box or button on the Taskbar. If you don’t see the Search box or button, you can easily enable one or the other .

Type “change the date” in the Search box. Results start to display as you type. Click “Change the date and time format” in the list of results.

On this Change Date and Time Formats settings screen, you can select different formats for the “Short date”, “Long date”, “Short time”, and “Long time”.

You may not see the format you want in the list of options for the date or time. For example, there are various formats using slashes and a couple using dashes, but no dates using periods. You have to access a screen in the old Control Panel to be able to enter a custom date or time format.

To access the screen in the Control Panel that will allow you to enter a custom date or time format, click the back arrow button in the upper-left corner of the Settings screen.

You are returned to the Date & time screen in the Time & Language settings.

Scroll down on the right side of the Date and time screen and click the “Additional date, time, & regional settings” link under Related settings.

The Clock, Language, and Region screen on the Control Panel displays. In the Region section on the right, click the “Change date, time, or number formats” link. This opens the Region dialog box. See the last section of this post for information on how to create a custom date or time format from this menu.

Note that there are other ways of accessing the Control Panel in Windows 10 as well.

If you’re using Windows 8.1, the procedure for changing the format of the date and time is slightly different. To begin, make sure the Start screen is active. If you’re on the desktop, click the “Start” button in the lower-left corner of the screen.

On the Start screen, start typing “change the date” (without the quotes). The Search panel opens and results start to display. When you see “Change the date and time format” appear in the list with the settings icon, click on it.

This screen allows you to select different formats for the short and long date and short and long time. However, as with Windows 10, you are limited in the available choices. If you want to use periods in your dates, you will have to enter a custom date format. We’ll show you how to access the Control Panel screen you need to do this.

To access the Control Panel, we have to go back a couple of screens. So, click the back arrow button in the upper-left corner of the Change date and tine formats screen…

…and again on the Time and language screen.

At the bottom of the left pane on the PC Settings screen, click the “Control Panel” link. Note that there are several different ways you can access the Control Panel in Windows 8/8.1 .

On the Control Panel, click the “Change date, time, or number formats” link under Clock, Language, and Region. This opens the Region dialog box, which you will use in the last section of this article to customize the date and time format.

To access the date and time format settings in Windows 7, click the Start menu button and enter "change the date" (without the quotes) into the Search box. Then, click the "Change the date, time, or number format" link in the list of results. This opens the Region dialog box we discuss in the next section. Unlike Windows 10 and 8.1, the Region dialog box is the only place you can select built-in date and time formats.

Now, we will set up a custom date using periods. If you're using Windows 10 or 8.1, the Region dialog box should be open and the Formats tab should be active. If not, click on the "Formats" tab to activate it. Then, click “Additional settings” at the bottom of the tab.

This dialog box also allows you to select built-in date and time formats just like the Change Date and Time Formats screen in PC Settings in Windows 10 and 8.1.

On the Customize Format dialog box, click the “Date” tab.

In the Date formats section, the “Short date” drop-down list box is also an edit box, allowing you to enter a different format. So, type the format you want to use in the “Short date” box. In our example, we entered “M.d.yy”. A small legend displays below the Short date and Long date drop-down lists indicating what the letters used in the date format mean. The “dd” for the day adds a leading zero before single-digit months. You can also use “MM” to add a leading zero before single-digit months, even though that notation is not listed. For the year, “yyyy” uses the full, four-digit year and “yy” uses the last two digits of the year. For example, “MM.dd.yyyy” would display as “03.09.2016”. Once you’ve entered your custom format in the “Short date” box, click “Apply”.

NOTE: The Short date is what’s used to display the date in the notification area on the Taskbar. So, if you want to display a custom long date on the Taskbar, enter the long date you want to use in the “Short date” box, even if it's one that's available in the "Long date" drop-down list.

The custom date format you entered displays in the Short date box in the Example section. You can also enter a custom time format by clicking the “Time” tab.

Enter a custom time in the “Short time” box using the notation listed on the dialog box. Once you’ve set up your custom date and time, click “OK” on the Customize Format dialog box.

Click “OK” to close the Region dialog box. If the Control Panel and Settings windows are still open, click the “X” button in the upper-right corner of each window to close them.

Our custom date format with the periods now displays in the notification area of the Taskbar.

Note that when you change the date or time format back to a different format, after entering a custom format, the custom format is not preserved as a choice. You would have to enter it again to change to that custom format.

Sesame street getting “reimagined” for season 56 (exclusive).

Sesame Workshop will drop the magazine-style format of the long-running children's show in 2025 in favor of a longer narrative-driven style, paired with a new animated series 'Tales From 123.'

Sesame Street is set to undergo some major renovations.

The long-running children’s series will be getting a creative overhaul for its 56th season, which will debut in 2025.

“It’s going to give us an opportunity to dive further into the narrative,” says Kay Wilson Stallings, the executive vp and chief creative development and production officer for Sesame Workshop, calling the changes a “reimagining” of the show, and adding that the longer segments will allow for more “dynamic” and “sophisticated” stories.

It could, for example, allow for both an “A” story and a “B” story, with the A story focusing on a core character and what they are going through, and the B story adding in “a little bit more levity and a lot more character moments,” Wilson Stallings says.

“Both the A story and the B story will come together in some way to really help us with whatever curricular focus that we’re trying to have, what lesson we’re trying to make,” she adds. “Kids love a little bit of peril, they love having emotional stakes, and in nine minutes, it’s kind of hard to really dive into those areas really effectively. And so, by opening up these segments and making them longer, it’s going to give us an opportunity to really serve up what we know from research, what we know from across the industry, what we know from our curriculum and education experts, what we know kids are looking for.”

There will be other tweaks, as well, including having a signature song in every episode (Wilson Stallings says they hope to bring famous singers in to help sing some of them) and having the Muppet characters address the camera to talk to the kids watching the show.

As for the new animated series, Tales From 123 , Wilson Stallings says that the series “for the very first time will give viewers an opportunity to go inside 123 Sesame Street, which is probably the most famous apartment building in the world.

“And there, beyond the stoop, is where monsters and humans and fairies and dinosaurs and talking numbers and letters and even food will call home,” she adds. “So this will be a great opportunity for our audience to explore a whole new part and a whole new world of Sesame Street. “

Wilson Stallings says that the new series — which could eventually be developed into its own spinoff — has been in the works for some time, collaborating with both internal and external creative talent.

“The assignment that we gave them was, we want a five-minute animated segment that includes our core characters,” she says. “When we do these segments, it doesn’t necessarily link into the A story or the B story, we just want something that feels very characterful, that has a lot of humor, that really kind of highlights the best components of who our characters are.”

“She always talked about Sesame Street as being like an experiment,” Wilson Stallings explains. “And she said that regularly we need to look at the creative, look at who kids are, look at what they are interested in, look at what we’re trying to instill in terms of an educational curriculum, pull all that together and on a regular basis assess Sesame Street and see where we need to make tweaks and where we need to make some enhancements to further evolve it.”

Sesame Street is nearing the end of a five-year deal with Warner Bros. Discovery, which debuts new episodes on its Max streaming service (the episodes also air on PBS after a nine-month delay).

As it happens, Sesame Workshop’s current deal with WBD ends after season 55 (which will begin about a year from now), meaning that the new-look Sesame Street will coincide with the beginning of its next rights deal. New episodes will debut on whatever channel or platform picks up the show, be it with WBD and Max, or somewhere else if they decide not to renew.

“The fact that it aligns with where we go after the current Warner deal is over, it just happens to be where the timing is,” Youngwood says. “We always want to be relevant to the audience. We always want to give the audience some reasons to watch the new [episodes], while they can still watch the library.”

“Particularly in today’s world, the library is so valuable and giving them [consumers] a new experience while they can also hold on to the old experience, or if they really want to be classic they can hold on to the experiences that their parents, or shall I say their grandparents, actually grew up with,” he says.

Indeed, the long history of Sesame Street (it debuted in 1969!) “plays to our advantage, because people want things that break through the clutter,” Youngwood says, adding that they need to “take a brand that people trust, and make sure you do it in a fresh and new and exciting way. That’s what we feel we need to do to make sure that we’re around another 10 years, 20 years, let alone 50 years.”

A Q2 Harris Poll found that Sesame Street was a top five brand in categories like “Trust,” Quality,” Fun” and “Dependable.”

Sesame Workshop has worked hard to expand beyond the flagship show. It now produces content for YouTube, TikTok and Instagram, has a game on Roblox, and is investing in the podcast space, including new podcast episodes that will serve as companions to TV episodes. It’s also developed corporate partnerships. (Oscar the Grouch is United Airlines’ “Chief Trash Officer” for example.)

date_format

This formats a date and time into the given strftime() format. Dates can be passed to Smarty as unix timestamps , DateTime objects , mysql timestamps or any string made up of month day year, parsable by php\'s strtotime() . Designers can then use date_format to have complete control of the formatting of the date. If the date passed to date_format is empty and a second parameter is passed, that will be used as the date to format.

Basic usage

Note Since Smarty-2.6.10 numeric values passed to date_format are always (except for mysql timestamps, see below) interpreted as a unix timestamp. Before Smarty-2.6.10 numeric strings that where also parsable by strtotime() in php (like YYYYMMDD ) where sometimes (depending on the underlying implementation of strtotime() ) interpreted as date strings and NOT as timestamps. The only exception are mysql timestamps: They are also numeric only and 14 characters long ( YYYYMMDDHHMMSS ), mysql timestamps have precedence over unix timestamps. Note date_format is essentially a wrapper to PHP's strftime() function.
