Notable artists like Shantell Martin and Matthew Zaremba showcased above, have taken their style of simple drawings and built a following from them. Why not turn your boredom into quick, easy artworks that even Jackson Pollock would commend.

- Subtractive drawing: Try this one with charcoal. Using it horizontally, shade your paper an even value of grey. Now “draw” with your eraser – erase the highlights of your subject.
- Left & right: Draw something with your dominant hand, then your non-dominant hand .
- Everything else: Draw the negative space around an object.
- Topsy turvy: Draw a portrait from an upside down photo.
- Scenes from memory: Sketch 3 scenes from your day from memory. Play with perspective and try this daily.
- Copy the masters: Draw a painting by your favorite painter. Or go to a museum and draw works you enjoy.
- 360 degrees: Choose an object and draw its outline. Turn the object slightly and draw the outline again. Repeat.
- Minimalist: Draw something with the fewest lines possible.
- Get the gist: A great way to approach drawing the human body, gesture drawing captures the basic form of your subject in a loose manner that often expresses emotion. Try limiting your time to gesture drawings of 10-30 seconds.
- Different techniques: Try shading different ways : hatching, cross hatching, stippling, and more.
- Light it up: Play with lighting. Draw outside at different types of the day and inside using multiple or single light sources from different angles.

- Try different media Pencil drawings are just the tip of the iceberg. Try charcoal, pastels, pens, markers, crayons, and conte crayons. Experiment and mix media to discover what produces your best drawings.

- Commit to a drawing series online Tumblr and Instagram among other platforms offer daily drawing challenges (think Inktober, but yearlong). Joining one of these and posting your drawings will increase your accountability and motivation. Not only will set themes give you direction and just the right amount of constraints to work within, you’ll also be joining a creative community that shares feedback.
Feeling Blocked?
Happens to us all. It’s part of the messy middle of any challenging project.

A Happy Face
Drawing a happy face is a great starter. Mainly because you can keep it so simple!
Pick up a piece of paper.
Now draw a circle. Inside that circle add two dots for the eyes and a curved line for the mouth. There, you’re done!

Drawing a happy face this simple is great for warm-up. For when you want to draw something, but don’t know what.
When that happens just start drawing small, simple drawings like these and something will come up!
After that, you can start adding more complexity to your happy faces. Try different styles and looks, more complex or less. There’s a lot to choose from, so experiment!
I don’t often draw flowers and plants in general. However, sometimes it’s something I really enjoy drawing to wind down. Just drawing a simple cactus or succulent.
These can have very simple shapes like circles and ellipses, so it’s quite easy to draw them in a very cute and simplified way!
Alternatively, you can also just draw a simple stalk with some leaves! Look up simple plants and draw what you find the most beautiful.

A Friendly Ghost
Ghosts can be cute and actually quite easy to draw!
Just draw the shape of a round silo. About 90% of your ghost is done, now all you need is to add two dots for the eyes and a line for the mouth.
Want to give it a little bit more personality? Instead of leaving the bottom of your ghost with a straight line, give it a wavy line!

The eyes and mouth are also very customizable! You can draw these cute eyes bigger, smaller, with eyelashes and bright spots.
And the same goes for the mouth! Draw it open, close, big or small smile, you choose.
Even when making simple drawings there are many options to give a more unique look to your art!
The moon is always a perfect subject for beginner artists to draw. By drawing the moon you get to practice your circles and curved lines! Drawing the outer space is always fun.
I’ve also mentioned this one as part of my 20 Cute Drawing Ideas list, which you can check right here.
You can draw a full moon, but also all the other phases that it goes through. Don’t be shy and add a little start or two.

This is also a great chance for you to try different materials! Instead of picking a white piece of paper, try drawing on black paper!
Get a white gel pen , soft pastels , or even chalk and draw the moon with it.
If you’re doing this digitally, do the same, draw on a black background. Experiment with different brushes and textures, it’s fun!
A Pair Of Cherries
Quick, simple, and easy! Cherries are another fun subject that comes to mind when I just want to draw something very simple and quick to wind down from work.
Two circles, joined by a small stalk. Go ahead and add a small leaf to it, to give it extra pizzazz.

You can either draw it using just a pen and that’s it. Or, if you want something more colorful, use some red and green markers .
What about drawing a number of cherries, each with a different color? That could make a nice pattern!
A Cute Bird
Birds can be quite complex, however, you can draw them in a very simple and cartoony way.
Look it up online for some ideas or even better: get an image of a bird. Now draw the outline of that bird.
Alright, you have the main shape of your bird! Now just add eyes, little legs, and maybe a wing or two!

Everything can be simplified by using basic shapes, so take advantage of that.
Trees are always a great one to draw since there are many different ways to tackle them.
You can draw a leafless tree. Only a trunk and branches. You also don’t need to be very clean with the branches. Just some random lines, going one way and the other and it’s done!
Then, of course, you can draw a tree full of green leaves. You don’t need to be super organized with these either. Random dots on top of the trunk of your tree and you’re finished.

Try adding a flower or two even!
Another option is to just use very simple shapes: a rectangle for the trunk and a circle for the top. Try different shapes for the top of your tree: an ellipse could work as well as a cloud shape.
Explore different options and have fun!
Stars are another example that can be drawn in several different ways. This is another drawing prompt based on outer space. (I really like the universe and celestial spaces)
You can draw the usual star shape. But if you want to make things even easier for yourself, you can just draw something similar to an asterisk or a diamond shape!

Add some dots around it, like they’re far away stars.
Stars tend to be bright, so you can do the same idea as with the moon: try drawing them on a dark background!
Hearts are always easy and cute… the simplified version, of course!
Drawing a real-life heart is very complex, and that’s not what we’re here for. Draw a pattern of tiny little hearts, like the ones we see in cartoons.
Draw them very simply with no details or add some stars around them or a highlight or two inside the heart.

Grab your sketchbook, doodle a few different things, look up different examples, and see what you like best!
Dogs are cute, so you don’t really need any more reasons to draw them.
The fun thing about drawing dogs is that there are many different breeds to choose from. You can keep it really simple or add as many details as you want!

I do have a course on drawing dogs where I show you how to draw not only one but 3 different breeds of dogs in many different positions and perspectives.
My philosophy is to make drawing an easy and enjoyable hobby, so if you want to know more about drawing dogs, I’m sure you’ll enjoy this course!
Another option is, if you own a dog, inspire yourself in your furry friend. This way, the whole process is even more fun.
A Cup Of Coffee
Get inspiration from your morning coffee and draw it!
Draw a cute mug, filled with coffee, and don’t forget to add bits of steam leaving the cup.

The fun thing about coffee is that you can draw many different types of beverages. You can draw coffee with some cream on top, maybe with some sprinkles even.
You can draw a clear mug, filled with a coffee latte. The milk and the coffee can even be layered, making a nice mix of colors there!
From simple black coffee to lattes and mochas, there are lots of fun choices to draw.
A Pair Of Boots
Hiking boots, heel boots, or rain boots. Better yet, do you own any kind of boots? Then take them out and draw them.

Keep things simple. Easy and basic shapes will get you there. A boot can be made out of an ‘L’ shape.
Then all you need to do is add some details: laces, texture, color. As always there are many options to make your drawings more unique, so explore than and have fun!
I couldn’t recommend you to draw a dog and not a cat, right? In this blog we love both of them, so now it’s time for cats.
If you think that drawing a whole animal is too hard, then draw just the face.
The face of a cat is very unique with the big round eyes, little nose, and whiskers.

You can keep things very simple by adding dots for the eyes or drawing them with big colored circles and a slit for the iris.
Go more realistic or cartoony, the choice is yours as long as you’re enjoying the process.
Again, if you own a cat, take the opportunity and use them for reference!
Smiling Lips
Admittedly, drawing a full face can be a bit too complex for a beginner artist. There’s just too much to get right.
Eyes, mouth, nose, ears… knowing not only how to draw them, but also drawing the right proportions and in their rightful places!
It’s one of the things that beginner artists struggle with and I was no exception.

So, instead of drawing everything at once, take smaller steps.
Draw just some lips!
Thin or thick, with or without lipstick.
You can draw closed lips or open, showing some teeth! There’s a lot to learn with just lips, so take your time.
I promise I’m not going to mention every single animal. But bunnies are just too cute to pass.
And more than that, they’re simple to draw! Round face and long ears. Complete your cute bunny with a face, round body, and soft tail.
Very simple shapes and you have a finished bunny!

Just like with the cat you can choose between drawing just the face or going ahead and drawing the full body. The choice is yours.
You can start with just the face and later on, when you feel more confident, draw the rest of the body!

A Basketball
Want to practice your circles? Then draw a basketball!
Start with a simple circle first. Repeat that as many times as you need.
Keep in mind that you don’t need to draw a perfect circle. We’re not perfect, so as long as it resembles a circle, it’s enough!

Then just add the familiar basketball lines and add some color.
This is one of those very easy things to draw, but can be quite fun to sketch!
If you want to go a step further with your basketball drawings, draw them in movement. Drawing some slight oval shapes instead of circles can be a nice change of pace!
We’ve covered plants above, so now it’s the time for flowers!
There are soo many to choose from, so either pick a favorite of yours or pick one that looks the easiest to draw.
Personally, I think daisies, pansies, or even sunflowers have some of the easiest shapes, so they can be a good starter!

A pretty button, along with some colorful petals. Don’t forget to add a leaf or two for some extra details.
You can even add a butterfly on top!
A Pair Of Glasses
There are many different types of glasses, made out of different shapes.
However, the lenses are always made out of basic shapes like rectangles, squares, or circles.
If you can draw those, you can draw a pair of glasses!

Lookup for different pairs of glasses and draw them. Take the chance and add some color to them.
This is a good opportunity to practice coloring shiny objects!
A Cute Skull
Skulls are the kind of thing you’ll always end up drawing in art classes. It’s a good way to understand better how the head works and which shapes to use.
However, you don’t need to go and draw a realistic skull right now. That might be way too much at this point.
So let’s keep it simple. A very cartoony skull should do it!

You can draw a skull by drawing two very simple shapes: a circle and a square, joined together.
Now just add two holes for where the eyes used to go, some teeth, and a hole for the nose. You’re done!
One of my first drawing ideas was to draw the moon. So now it’s the sun’s turn!
Simply draw a circle with some random lines around it and you’re done. Go ahead and add some color.

Want to add some more uniqueness to your sun? How about drawing wavy lines around it? Or better yet, small triangles?
Go ahead and draw a smiling face to your sun or even some sunglasses, that could look quite amusing!
This is also one of the pretty simple ideas that I recommend for younger kids or even toddlers, in my 60 Drawing Ideas for Kids That Spark Their Imagination article, which you can read here!
Kids love to start by drawing the sun and this kind of drawing tutorial!
Bees have a very fun shape and color scheme, so I think it’s an amazing idea to draw.

They’re also very round, so you have the opportunity to, again, practice your circles and ellipses!
A round head, a round body, and tiny round wings. Now just add small lines for their legs and you’re done. Don’t forget to add some color!
Penguins with their silly little walks can be very cute, so I had to add them to the list.
You can also draw them by using very easy and simple shapes.

Draw a shape that resembles an egg, that’s the body. Now all you have to do is add tiny little arms to the side and a small orange beak.
There you have it, you just drew a penguin in a fun and easy way!
I love drawing mushrooms! I have just so many pictures of different mushrooms saved on my computer.

Whenever I want to draw something different and simple, I look for one that looks interesting and draw it.
There are so many different types of mushrooms, made out of different shapes and colors!
Some are very simple to draw, others can be more complex. So choose something according to your mood and have some fun!
Related Questions
Some beginner artists have some questions when it comes to drawing, so here are a few quick answers!
What is a good drawing idea for beginners to start with?
One of the easiest drawing ideas for kids and beginners is to draw simple geometric shapes like circles, squares, triangles or even a rainbow.
Another fun idea is to draw a rocket ship (with just those shapes!), which can be done by drawing a simple triangular shape with a few extra details like a window and flame.
These are easy things to draw while building confidence in your sketching skills.
Can you suggest any easy things to draw for young children?
An easy drawing idea for very young kids would be doodling small creatures or favorite characters in a chibi style.
Such as baby Groot, cute animals (like a Whale or Dolphin) or even drawing a simple paper plane.
These drawings are simple and allow children to explore their creativity.
What other drawing skills can young kids or beginner artists practice?
One of the best things to draw for beginners to improve their skills is to practice drawing continuous line drawings , where the pencil never leaves the paper.
This helps to improve hand-eye coordination and control. Additionally, sketching simple objects or scenes will help build foundational drawing skills.
Are there any easy drawing ideas that incorporate letters or numbers?
Absolutely! Beginner artists can create illustrations by turning letters or numbers into objects, like using a “B” for a butterfly or the number “8” for a snowman.
This helps them learn and recognize letters and numbers while being creative.
I hope these drawing prompts are helpful and you have fun improving your drawing skills.

7 drawing techniques for beginners., how to keep inspired and motivated..
To help get you started, we’ve selected some simple objects you can try and sketch. Whether it’s with pen and paper or using Adobe Sketch , we’ll run through them step-by-step, so you can learn the basics first.
Remember, practice makes perfect. You might not nail the detail first time around, so keep trying to get the final drawing right.
Before you start, it’s worth downloading a few reference photos of each of the following objects from Adobe Stock . Keep this open in a window on your computer or tablet, then it’ll give you something to mimic with your own drawing.
1. Start by drawing a large oval or teardrop for the body – if you choose a teardrop, the point of the shape should face away from where the head will be.
2. Create a circle that is half the size of the oval, to draw a bird’s head.
3. Divide both of these shapes into quarters.
4. Sketch a couple of curved lines for a neck, to attach the head to the body, then add a triangular beak and tail.
5. Sketch downwards from the centre point in the oval body to add legs and feet.
6. Add a z-like shape at the top-left of the oval, to add shoulders – where you’ll draw wings later.
7. Use your reference photo to add the full outline of the bird and build the body structure from there.
8. Finally, draw in the additional layers, including wings and lines for feathers. If digital sketching and adding colour, try using the watercolour brushes in Adobe Fresco .
1. If you’re drawing a dog looking face-on, start with an oval shape for its snout.
2. Above this, draw an upside-down u-shape, for the head, then a small oval or triangle for its snout.
3. Draw the ears next, which will either flop down the sides of the head in a half-oval shape or point upwards in a triangle shape.
4. Inside your upside-down u-shape, draw two spots for eyes and two arches above for eyebrows. Pay close attention to the eyes, capturing these accurately is the key to creating a compelling illustration of a canine.
5 From the nose, draw a line downwards that curves at either side, for the mouth.
6. Add front legs, as they look on your reference photo, then draw a u-shape behind them, to make the body.
7. Finally, sketch two u-shapes either side of the bottom of the body, for back legs, then add the tail. You can flesh out your drawing in more detail, using the reference photo.
1. This will be a similar composition to sketching a dog, so follow those steps, but with the following changes.
2. Wolves’ faces are slightly leaner, so the wolf you’re drawing should have a slightly narrower oval for a snout.
3. When drawing eyes, they need to be closer to the front of the face, likewise, when you are adding eye colour, it will generally be lighter.
4. The body will be slightly leaner and taller, which means when drawing the u-shape to form it, it needs to be thinner and longer.
5. Legs will also need to be lengthier, so draw longer lines when adding them.
6. Wolves’ ears are pointier and will face upwards, so you’ll need triangles to form these, close to the top of its head.
7. Their fur will be more rugged when you’re sketching out this detail.
1. Start by creating a simple line guide. Draw a slightly curved line for the back leg, an opposing line for the body, then add a guide for the neck and head.
2. Next, add several different semi-circles that will form the horse’s torso, main body and upper back legs.
3. Draw two circles that form the top of the head, and the other a slightly smaller one that will be for the mouth – then connect these with lines.
4. Add ears by sketching gently-curved triangles at the top of the head.
5. Move onto the legs, which should be made up of several different circles, which will reflect the knees and the slightly thicker upper thigh.
6. The front legs of a horse will look different to the back, so study your reference photo to get that shape right.
7. Connect these circles by lines to create the leg outline, then connect your body circles to mimic the body shape of a horse.
8. Add extra layers, drawing the horses’ mane, tail and hooves, to complete the sketch.
1. Create an open topped egg-shape in the middle of the page, as the inner bud of the flower, then add an opening oval at the top.
2. Draw your rose with mini-petals inside this opening oval, then create a heart shape that includes the opening oval inside it.
3. Add another larger heart, to encompass the smaller heart and inner petals each time.
4. Repeat this several times, to mimic the appearance of petals opening with each layer.
5. With each layer, start to add details to the petals, such as the faint lines that display its texture.
6. Sketch a ‘cup’ of petals to go around the outside of the inner bud, starting with smaller ones, then eventually make them bigger.
7. Finally, add a stem at the bottom, as a cylinder shape, that connects to the rose – you can include smaller details, such as thorns, to this.
1 . Begin your face drawing with a large circle for the upper half of the head, then a horizontal line for the chin and jawline.
2 . Draw a vertical line through the middle of the face and add eight horizontal lines to split the face into different portions.
3 . On your central line, draw in your eyes, then sketch two vertical lines down from the inner edge of the eye, to the next horizontal line.
4 . In-between these two lines, draw in your nose, according to your reference photo.
5. Just above the eyes, add in eyebrows, using a thicker pencil or digital pen .
6. Draw a line down from the centre of each eye, towards the horizontal line that is one section below the nose.
7. From each of the vertical edges of these lines, draw in the lips.
8. Add in the ears, which should start just above your central line and stretch down to the bottom of the nose.
9. Finally, add detail into the hair, as it appears in your reference image.
1. Use the outline of a head, as detailed in the drawing a face section, to draw your eye, and space your eyes one eye-width apart, either side of the nose.
2. Draw a circle for the full eyeball, most of which will be obscured by eyelids.
3. Add a smaller circle in the middle of the eyeball to create the iris, then an even smaller one inside that for the pupils.
4. Sketch curved lines over the eyeball, revealing only the iris.
5. Add extra lines around this for the eyelid folds and tear ducts in the corner of the eye.
6. Finally, add eyelashes on the upper part, starting from the right edge of the eyelid, then lower lashes, beginning a just below where the lower lid touches the eyeball.
1. Sketch a circle, which will form the ball of the nose and draw two slightly curved vertical lines either side of it.
2. Draw a horizontal line into the circle’s middle and add two triangle-like shapes either side of the circle, for the nostrils.
3. Shade a U-shape around the circle and vertical lines, to create extra nose shape.
4. Then, shade in the nostrils, to give a more natural curve to them.
5. Add in two mini-circles at the bottom of the nostrils.
6. Then draw the nose how it looks in your reference photos, softening the harder sketch lines you drew earlier and shaping it accordingly.
How to draw a mandala .
1. Draw a dot in the centre of your piece of paper, then draw a cross of equal lengths.
2. Add in three dots on each line. The first should be half an inch from the centre, the second an inch from that and the third 1.5 inches from that one. Repeat this for each line.
3. Draw another cross, at a 45-degree angle, the same length and with identically spaced dots on it.
4. Connect these dots by drawing three separate circles.
5. Start to add fine details – one idea could be to draw teardrops, petals and circles to create a symmetrical design.
6. Shade in any details around those shapes for a colourful mandala drawing design.

Getting your technique just right can take time if you’re learning to draw . But these tips should help you find your own style and refine it over time. If you’re already comfortable with your skills, they’ll help you brush up on the fundamentals.
1. Find your drawing style.
Whatever you’re drawing, whether it’s your favourite anime character, a flower in your back garden or houses on a city street, the principles of drawing stay the same.
- Pay attention to shapes – they’re building blocks that give a drawing structure.
- Take your time – don’t rush, this will only cause mistakes and add time in the long-run.
- Practice – like anything, you’ll only get better by repeating and trying it again.
Using these rules, you can start to refine your own style over time. You might find that pointillism is your thing, cartoons are your forte, or line drawings might suit your skills.
2. Start with basic shapes.
Basic shapes are an essential starting point when drawing any object, especially when turning a 3D object into a 2D drawing.
“You’re not just drawing what you see in front of you. You’re drawing the other side as well.”
Lucas Elliott, Artist.
To create that depth, break down whatever you’re drawing into:
· Circles
· Rectangles
· Triangles
You can then smooth these edges out later on, to create a more realistic final image. To get this part right, imagine how the figure would look in 3D and from every angle – like it would in real life.
3. Study reference photos.
When you’re just starting out, keep a picture of what you’re drawing in front of you. It’ll give you something to mimic and help you better understand how to draw the outlines and small details of your subject.
“Look at reference images. The more you learn about a subject, the better.”
Kevin Jay Stanton, Artist
To find a huge collection of imagery, search Adobe Stock for inspiration you can use for your next sketch.
4. Set rules for yourself.
When you’re learning the basics, it can be tempting to skip to the more advanced stuff. But it’s important to nail the fundamentals first and master a skill first, before moving onto something more complicated.
For instance, as you fill your sketchbook and are experimenting with colours, start with a limited colour palette. This will help you figure out how colours work together and won’t distract you with all the possibilities out there.
“Picking a colour that I love, then two more that look nice with it really improved my colour sense. When a rule doesn’t serve you anymore, start to break it.”
Kevin Jay Stanton, Artist .
5. Follow your passion.
It’s good to step outside your comfort zone and try drawing as many subjects, using different drawing styles, as possible. But it’s equally as important to find and focus on sketching what you love.
Drawing is all about fun. If you’re interested in drawing manga , for instance, try to create as many of your favourite characters as possible, to expand your skills in that area.
“Really pay attention to how they’re drawn. You’re drawing from someone else’s sketch, focus on how they build their lines. If creating from real life, pay close attention to the object and the space around them.”
Lucas Elliott, Artist.
6. For larger compositions, make a grid.
When you graduate from small-scale sketches and want to create bigger drawings, gridlines are a lifeline. They can help you figure out where different objects belong, as they appear naturally.
“If you have a photo or illustration that’s broken down into quadrants, you can start with one small section and finish that first. Then, you can move onto the next one. Just makes sure you are still connecting it to the previous section, so they still relate to one another.”
7. Keep experimenting and evolving your style.
Here are a few tips on staying inspired and creating new compositions – ready to fill your sketchbook with amazing drawings.
- Take a look at your surroundings. The world is your canvas. Cliched, but it’s true. Take a look around your home or enjoy a walk outside and look around you – there are subjects you can sketch everywhere.
- Don’t be afraid to daydream. When you’re not thinking about ideas or forcing yourself to come up with a new composition, inspiration can sometimes strike. Take a moment to allow thoughts to fill your head and your next creation could arrive.
- Check out your contemporaries. A new idea is always influenced by something that has gone before. Look at what other artists are/have been doing. That includes classical artists, current stars and other beginners, to see what they’re creating.
Here’s some expert advice to help encourage your creativity to run wild and keep you on track when looking for creative things to draw.
“Focus on a style that you’re most intrigued by. If you’re a beginner, there’s no shame in copying as much as possible.”
Ethan Young, Graphic Novel Writer and Artist.
“Draw what’s in front of you. No matter what you do, your act of trying to capture it will help.”
Chris Kindred, Editorial Artist.
“A lot of what people point to with my artwork is faces, but that used to be a thing I didn’t like drawing. I started doing an exercise where I focused on drawing different facial features and expressions … it definitely helped me.”
Mildred Louis, Artist.
“At first, because things don’t always come naturally, it can be discouraging and frustrating. But that’s always how it goes when you’re learning something new. Practice, practice, practice, and don’t give up.”
Jen Bartel, Illustrator and Comic Artist.

15. A Spider in a Web

You can probably find a spiderweb in your home somewhere. Or, you could venture out early in the morning and look for one outside. There’s nothing more beautiful than a spider web covered in dewdrops or frost.
A spider in a web can be as challenging as you make it. If you’re a beginner, you can keep it simple. But if you want to test yourself, it’s a great thing to sketch. You can work on making those individual web strands as true to life as possible.
16. A Teapot

A teapot is another comforting image. You can have fun sketching the curves of your teapot and decorating it however you like.
17. A Pair of Shoes

While we’re on household articles, why not try drawing a pair of shoes? You could pick sneakers, flats, or high heels. Depending on the type of shoe, it could be more or less challenging. Really focus on the detail and getting the perspective of the shoe right!
18. A Newborn Baby

A newborn baby makes a beautiful and emotional subject for artwork. It can also be tricky to sketch a baby accurately, but it’s well worth trying! Plus, it will make a thoughtful gift for the new parents.
19. Sketch a Friend or Family Member

Drawing people isn’t easy, but it’s well worth mastering. You could ask a friend or family member to sit while you sketch them. Then, you could gift them the portrait as a kind, personalized present! Or, if you don’t have anyone available, you could draw someone from a photo. Then, as you get more advanced, you could compare your portraits to earlier drawings. You’ll be amazed to see how much progress you’ve made!
Eyes or an Eye Closeup

They say that eyes are the window to the soul. They are also intensely intricate, and every eye is unique. Try to draw an eye in detail and capture it as closely as possible.

A door provides untold possibilities. Where does it lead to? What significance does it hold? At the same time, you probably have a few different doors in your own home you could sketch. So, it’s a great way to sketch from your surroundings.
22. A Landscape

Get outside with your pencils and draw the world around you! Pick a scenic setting, and take the time to draw it. Or, if you’re feeling creative, you could draw a landscape from your imagination. You can still develop your skills this way – it doesn’t have to be a real place.
23. A River

Rivers are always flowing, so they’re never the same from one moment to the next. Plus, they are calm and relaxing places. If you have a river near you, head down to it and spend an hour or two drawing what you see.
24. The Ocean

Water in any form makes for a gorgeous drawing. The ocean is especially tricky to draw due to the movement of the waves. But it’s also a worthy sketching idea. Take your pick from a calm scene, frothy, foam-topped waves, or a stormy sea!
25. A Tree in All Four Seasons

Trees offer lots of inspiration for artists. Older trees have probably lived longer than you and stood the test of time. And they continue to change throughout the year.
One way to challenge yourself is to find an impressive tree. Then, sketch it in all four seasons. You could make this a year-long project and visit your chosen tree each season. Or if you can’t wait that long, you can use your imagination to draw the tree in every season. Can you recreate the subtle changes from season to season?
26. A Still Life of Fruits

Take inspiration from the Old Masters and draw a still life. It’s an excellent way to practice your sketching skills. Plus, you should have a few fruits at home, so it’s easy to put a still life together at short notice. Then, work on getting your shapes, perspectives, and lighting right. It’s not as hard as you might first think!
27. A Dancer

It’s much easier to draw a still life or stationary object than a person in movement. Dancers are graceful, powerful, and athletic. Try to draw a dancer and capture that feeling of flow and movement!
28. A Bicycle

A bicycle is surprisingly complex to draw. You could sketch one in motion or stationary – it’s up to you! Add a basket or racing stripes to make your bicycle stand out.

A car brings to mind speed, power, and freedom. Have fun drawing your favorite type of car. It could be an old-fashioned Mini, a race car, a Rolls Royce, or a Tesla. The choice is yours!
30. The View from Your Window

This idea is very simple and easy to achieve. All you need to do is look out of your window and draw what you see. You don’t need to overthink it; you can just focus on your drawing skills. The interesting thing is that your view might be a little different each time. Maybe people are walking by, or flowers blooming, or falling leaves. You can capture that moment in time and preserve it forever!
31. Your Favorite Place

Think of your favorite place in the world. It probably carries a lot of emotional significance, so it’s interesting to draw. Can you convey an atmosphere that shows people how you feel about this place?
32. A Bridge

Bridges are both elegant and fascinating engineering feats. You could draw a small bridge over a pond à la Monet. Or, you could challenge yourself to tackle a complex design like the Golden Gate Bridge. There are all sorts of bridges you could draw, and each will result in very different artwork.
33. An Autumn Tree

There’s something special about autumn (or fall, depending on where you are in the world). The gorgeous golden colors are hard to resist, so why not capture them in your artwork. See if you can recreate the rich red, orange, and gold shades and the leaves as they fall from the tree. If it’s not the right time of year, you can always draw from a photo!
34. A Cozy Winter Scene

We’ve all seen those picture-perfect postcard images of villages blanketed in snow. So, why not have a go at drawing your own cozy winter scene? Drawing a snowy scene has its own challenges as you try to make it look realistic. Capturing the lights and shadows on the snow isn’t easy, but it can look spectacular when done right!
35. A Fireplace

Winter has its own charms, and there’s nothing like being snuggled up beside a roaring fire. So, create a warm, comforting drawing of a fireplace in winter.
36. Insects Up Close

Whether you like insects or not, they make interesting drawing specimens. You could go for a butterfly, ladybird, bee, or beetle. Each one has its distinctive characteristics. I would recommend grabbing a microscope and getting as close as possible. Then, draw these final details in your artwork!
37. A Hot Air Balloon

Think about how excited you are when you spot the rare sight of a hot air balloon in the sky. Brightly colored balloons against a blue sky make for a beautiful drawing. So, pick up your colored pencils and have a go!
38. A Dragon

Dragons are fierce, mythical creatures. If you’re looking for something out of the ordinary to draw, have a go at a dragon! You could also compare the differences between eastern and western dragons – and even draw one of each.

There are all sorts of boats you could draw: Sailboats, yachts, cruise ships, and more. So take your pick, and get to work on your drawing of a boat.
40. A Feather

There’s a lot you can learn from focusing on one seemingly simple item to draw, such as a feather. But when you pay attention, you’ll notice more and more details. You can often find feathers on the ground outside, so pick one up and take it home. Then, aim to get your drawing looking as accurate as possible.
41. Your Kitchen

The kitchen is an essential room in the home, but we don’t pay it as much attention as it deserves. There are a lot of fun details to draw in the kitchen, from cooking utensils to kitchen tiles. Have a go at recreating your kitchen on the page!

Who can resist a nice cake? If you’re into all things sweet, why not try your hand at drawing a cake? It could be a decadent chocolate cake or a little cupcake. It could be realistic or stylized. The choice is yours! But you’re sure to enjoy this delicious drawing prompt.
43. Dandelions

Dandelions are often seen in art, as they represent time, change, and transformation. That’s a powerful symbol for a little wildflower. You could draw this flower when it’s blooming. But, it’s most commonly drawn as a dandelion clock, with the seeds blowing in the wind.
44. A Musical Instrument

There are all sorts of musical instruments, so you have a lot of choices here. You could go for a wind instrument or something from the brass section. Maybe, you’d prefer to draw a guitar or a piano.
45. A Fairy Tale Scene

It’s time to use your imagination and reflect on your childhood. What was your favorite fairy tale? Recapture the magic, and create an enchanting scene from a fairy tale. If you enjoy this prompt, you could create a whole series from different tales!

Books provide inspiration, entertainment, and knowledge. Why not draw a stack of books, or even someone reading a book. How you interpret this prompt is up to you, so long as it includes books!
47. A Peacock

Peacocks are regal, elegant animals. They’re a lot of fun to draw, although they’re not the easiest sketching idea. The peacock’s tail, in particular, has gorgeous, vibrant colors and patterns. So, it’s both a challenge and an interesting thing to draw!
48. An Exotic Animal

Exotic animals are wild, fierce, and full of life. Pick out your favorite exotic animal from faraway to draw. It could be an elephant, a tiger, a lion, or a giraffe. This sketch idea is a lot of fun, as there are so many possibilities. You can really make it your own.
49. Fireworks

Fireworks are amazing, drawing oohs and aahs from spectators. They only last for seconds, but you can capture their beauty forever on paper. Try your hand at the bright colors and bold shapes of fireworks lighting up the sky! You might want to work on dark paper, so they stand out more.
50. A Sketch of Yourself Drawing

Finally, I have a very meta drawing idea for you! Have a go at drawing yourself, the artist, at your desk drawing. You could even draw yourself drawing a self-portrait if that doesn’t get too complicated for you!

The Wrap Up
There you have 50 different drawing ideas to fill your sketchbook. So, you shouldn’t find yourself thinking, ‘what should I draw?’ for a very long time!
When you make drawing a habit, you’ll be amazed at how quickly you learn and improve. Soon, you’ll be a talented artist with pages upon pages of amazing drawings.
Browse through, pick an idea that jumps out at you, and off you go! Let me know which of these prompts is your favorite in the comments!

When you're bored out of your mind, drawing is a quick and easy way to indulge in some creative fun. But what should you try to draw? Don't worry: we've got you covered if you're short on inspiration. Whether you like drawing portraits, characters, landscapes, or something else, this list will help you find an idea that you love. Grab a pencil and paper, and dive in! This article is based on an interview with our professional artist, Kelly Medford, founder of Sketching Rome Tours. Check out the full interview here.
Draw a flower.

- If you have a garden, you could go outside and draw the first flower you see. Otherwise, you could look up a picture of the flower you want to draw online.
- For example, you can easily draw a rose in bloom by drawing its center as a small circle and then layering petals in irregular rows around it.
- If flowers aren't your style, draw a pinecone instead. Draw the pinecone's teardrop shape first and fill in its overlapping scales.
Sketch a fantasy creature.

- You could also create your own mythological creature if you're ready to flex your imagination.
Practice basic shapes.

- Try drawing other 3D shapes , like cones, pyramids, and prisms. This will help you develop your skill in creating 3D objects on 2D paper.
Sketch a tree outside your window.

- Think of leaves as masses, especially if you're studying the tree from afar. Don't outline every leaf; instead, add the most detail where leaves meet the sky, as that is where you can see their shape most clearly.
Doodle a cool animal.

- Use your pet as inspiration. You could draw a dog , rabbit, cat, bird, or any other animal you might own.
- If you like big cats, try drawing a jaguar.
- If you find marine life fascinating, draw a shark , dolphin, or another colorful fish that catches your eye.
Create a hybrid animal.

Draw a portrait.

- Make sure you choose a picture where the person in question is eye-level with the photographer. That way, you won't be trying to draw at an odd angle.
Sketch a favorite cartoon character.

- If you're a fan of How to Train Your Dragon, you could try drawing Toothless .
- If you like Peanuts, you could always draw Snoopy .
Create a character from your imagination.

- It's helpful to have a character concept before you start drawing, including a short description of their physical appearance and role in your story.
Draw a landscape.

- To ensure accuracy, consider using a grid. Draw grid lines over your reference photo and the same-proportion grid lines over your drawing paper. You'll have a more detailed guide as you sketch your landscape.
Do a blind contour drawing.

- Observation is one of the biggest components of a successful drawing. If you're looking to become the best artist you can be, observing your subject matter carefully is key.
Sketch people on the street.

- Find a comfortable place to sit in a public area and do your best to look inconspicuous; wear earbuds and sit with your back to the wall if you don't want anyone to see you sketching. [7] X Research source
Recreate a work of art.

- Whether you're a novice or seasoned artist, you probably have a few artistic role models. You can recreate art from any era, whether it's a da Vinci or your favorite character artist on Instagram.
Practice drawing in perspective.

- If it helps you create an accurate building, you can trace receding lines back to a vanishing point and then erase them later.
- Vanishing points don't have to be placed on your page. It's helpful to do so if you're just starting out, but vanishing points are often located at imaginary spots further back from the page.

120+ Easy Drawing Ideas

Drawing can be a relaxing and enjoyable hobby that allows you to express your creativity. Whether you’re a beginner artist or just looking for something simple to pass the time, countless easy things to draw are both fun and satisfying. With a little patience and practice, you’ll soon discover that drawing doesn’t have to be intimidating or complicated.
To help you get started, we’ve compiled a list of easy subjects perfect for budding artists or those who want a simple, stress-free drawing session. From cute animals and plants to more abstract shapes and patterns, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. So grab your favorite drawing tools, and let’s explore the world of easy and delightful subjects that you can bring to life on paper.
Easy Flowers to Draw

Drawing flowers can be both fun and relaxing. As a beginner, you may be searching for some easy flowers to draw that can boost your confidence and help you improve your skills. In this section, we provide you with some friendly suggestions on easy flowers to draw.
Firstly, try your hand at drawing a simple daisy. Daisies are a great choice for any beginner because they consist of few elements: a circle for the center and oval-shaped petals. By practicing drawing daisies, you’ll get the hang of basic flower shapes and composition.

Another flower that’s both beautiful and easy to draw is the sunflower . Like the daisy, the sunflower has a large center and petals surrounding it. What makes the sunflower unique is its long stem and large leaves. Drawing sunflowers will help you get comfortable drawing different flower components, like leaves and stems.

Roses might seem intimidating at first, but they can also be quite simple to draw if you start with a basic rose . Begin by sketching the basic spiral shape of a rose’s layers, and then slowly add details, such as petals and leaves. You will become more comfortable and confident in drawing roses as you practice.

Finally, another easy flower to draw is the tulip . Tulips have a distinctive shape with a cup-like appearance that can be easily sketched by drawing a simple U-shaped curve for the petals and a long stem with elongated leaves.
Animals for Beginners

Drawing animals may seem daunting at first, but with a little practice and guidance, you’ll be able to create adorable illustrations in no time. Below are some friendly beginner animals suggestions to help you get started.

Start by drawing simple animals like a cat or a dog . These popular pets are easy to draw, and you can experiment with their various breeds and shapes. For a more feathery friend, try sketching a cute bird . You can start with a small bird like a parrot or a dove, and move on to more exotic species if you’re feeling confident.

If you want to venture into the wild, consider drawing a lion or a deer . Their majestic appearances might be slightly more challenging, but they’re an excellent way to practice drawing fur textures and animal anatomy. Remember to pay attention to their unique features, like the lion’s mane or the deer’s antlers.

Don’t forget about the underwater world! Drawing a fish can be a fun and easy way to practice creating smooth, flowing lines. You can experiment with different fish shapes and patterns, from delicate goldfish to bold, angular sharks.

With some patience, you can even tackle more complex animals like elephants , bats , or horses . These creatures may require some extra attention to detail, but they’ll give you a chance to really hone your drawing skills.

Once you grow more comfortable, try your hand at drawing pandas and penguins . These adorable animals have distinctive patterns that make them stand out from the crowd, giving you a fun challenge to tackle.

Insects and Small Creatures

Drawing insects and small creatures is a fun and easy way to get started in the world of art. You’ll find that these tiny beings are a great subject for practicing different techniques and styles.

One of the most recognizable insects you can draw is the bee . To sketch a bee, start with an oval-shaped body, add some stripes for detailing, and don’t forget to include its wings and antenna. Need help? Check out this step-by-step video tutorial on drawing honeybees and other insects.

Butterflies are also quite popular for their beautiful, intricate designs and the symmetry of their wings. Begin by drawing the outline of their wings, mimicking the shape of a letter “B” that has been flipped on its horizontal axis. Fill in the wing patterns with a mix of lines, circles, and other geometric shapes to create a stunning butterfly.

When sketching insects, it’s important to remember their key features, such as their hard external skeleton and sense organs like antennae. Adjust these characteristics to fit the specific insect you’re drawing. For example, a ladybug has a round shape with black spots, while a praying mantis has a long, skinny body and large, raptorial front legs.
To make your drawings even more life-like, experiment with shading and coloring. Use pencils, markers, or even digital drawing tools to explore different hues and textures. By starting with simple shapes and gradually adding details, you’ll soon find that drawing insects and small creatures is an enjoyable and rewarding activity.
Simple Objects and Shapes

When you’re just starting to learn how to draw, it’s a good idea to begin with simple objects and shapes. Grab your sketchbook, pencils, and let’s get started!
First off, familiarize yourself with the basic shapes such as the circle , square , and triangle . These shapes are the building blocks for more complex drawings, so it’s essential to practice drawing them accurately. Remember, practice makes perfect, so don’t be discouraged if your shapes aren’t perfect at first.
A great way to practice drawing shapes is by tracing or using a stencil. This can help train your hand-eye coordination and muscle memory until you can confidently draw them freehand.
Now that you’ve got the basics down, let’s move on to some fun, easy objects you can draw using these shapes. A perfect example is a heart , which is a friendly shape that can be drawn using two circles and a triangle. To draw a heart, connect two circles next to each other with a triangle at the bottom. Voilá, you’ve got a heart!

Once you’re comfortable drawing these basic shapes, you can combine them to create more detailed objects. For instance, you can add a few triangles and circles to create an adorable animal. The possibilities are endless, and there is always room for improvement and experimentation.
Drawing Everyday Items to Get Your Creative Juices Flowing
Drawing everyday items can be a fun and easy way to improve your artistic skills. With a friendly approach and simple techniques, you can create interesting and recognizable drawings of things you see and use daily.

Drawing food items can be both enjoyable and appetizing. Start with basic shapes like a round apple or a triangular slice of pizza. Add some simple textures to illustrate different types of foods – crosshatching for bread, small dots for seeds, and wavy lines for lettuce. Feel free to experiment with color to make your food illustrations more appealing and lively. Just remember to keep it light and fun, even if your creations end up looking too tasty to resist!

Shoes offer a great opportunity to practice drawing different shapes, angles, and textures. Start by sketching the outline, keeping in mind the curves and contours of the shoe. Pay attention to the details, such as stitching, laces, and various patterns on the surface. As you progress, try drawing shoes from different perspectives – side view, top view, or even from the bottom to showcase the soles. This practice will enhance your ability to capture the essence of a shoe, making your drawings more realistic and engaging.

When it comes to drawing keys , they may seem like a simple object, but they can also be great for building your skills in symmetry and negative space. Begin with the basic oval shape of the key’s head, and then add the rectangular stem. From there, carefully draw the teeth of the key, making sure to maintain an even distance between them. As you become more confident, experiment with different key shapes and styles, such as old-fashioned skeleton keys or modern car keys. This variety will help you stay engaged and focused on the task at hand.

Remember that the goal is to enjoy the process, so don’t worry too much about perfection. As you continue to practice drawing everyday items, you’ll find that your skill and confidence will grow naturally. So, take out your sketchbook, grab a pencil, and let your inner artist flourish as you draw your way through the world of familiar objects all around you.
Nature Sketches

To capture a beautiful landscape, begin with the horizon line and then add elements like hills, valleys, or mountains. Practice drawing different landscapes to improve your skills, such as sunrises, sunsets, and forests.
Sun, Moon, Stars

When including these celestial bodies into your nature sketches, remember to be mindful of their relative sizes and positions in the sky. Add clouds for a more realistic touch.

A wide array of leaves, each with its unique shape and size, can make for an interesting nature sketch. Experiment with drawing different types of leaves for a realistic rendition.

Fluffy, light, and airy, clouds can add depth and dimension to your drawing. Observe various cloud formations and experiment with shading techniques to bring them to life convincingly.

Festive Ideas

During holidays like Christmas and Halloween, you can bring out your artistic side with some easy and fun drawings. Here are a few ideas to get you started:
For Christmas , start by drawing simple elements like a snowman or Santa Claus. You can also try a cute polar bear wearing a seasonal scarf and holding a candy cane . Speaking of candy canes, they make attractive and easy-to-draw subjects on their own, especially when placed next to other festive items such as wrapped gifts or a cozy fireplace.

An iconic symbol of Christmas is the Christmas tree. Sketch out a vintage-looking Christmas tree with ornaments and a star atop. You can also take a sweet approach by drawing a gingerbread man cookie, which is perfect for beginners and adds a touch of whimsy to your festive sketches.

When it comes to Halloween , there are plenty of easy drawings to create. You can start with a classic subject like pumpkins.
Sketch out a jack-o’-lantern with a goofy, scary, or silly face. It’s your choice! You can even draw a group of pumpkins in different shapes and sizes to create a little pumpkin patch.
Candy is also a big part of Halloween, and you can show that in your drawings. Sketch overflowing candy bags or buckets and even throw in some popular Halloween characters, like witches or ghosts, grabbing their favorite treats. Feel free to customize these drawings to suit your preferences and have fun creating your festive artwork!
How to Draw People

Learning how to draw people can seem challenging at first, but with the right approach and a bit of patience, you’ll soon be able to create realistic and expressive human figures. Let’s get started!
First, start by sketching a basic skeleton to help you map out the figure’s proportions. Begin with the head as a small circle and move on to draw the chest and hip as two connected larger circles. This will give you the base structure of the body and make it easier to add details later on.

Next, focus on drawing the in human face. Start with a light vertical line down the center of the head, followed by a horizontal line across it to create a cross shape. These lines will help you place the eyes, nose , and mouth correctly.

Sketch two small ovals along the horizontal line for the eyes and fill them in with pupils. Keep the friendly tone in mind, so the eyes will look inviting. To draw the nose, add a small curved line below the eyes, and for the mouth, draw two curved lines – one for the upper lip and one for the lower lip, right below the nose.

You can also watch my video on How to Draw a Side Profile if you want to get better at drawing faces.

Now it’s time to add some detail to the hands. Draw the arms first, using long lines from the shoulders to the wrists. Then, sketch circles for the hands and start adding fingers. Remember, practice makes perfect! Drawing hands can be tricky, so don’t worry if they don’t look perfect at first – just keep trying.
Lastly, keep developing the rest of the body by filling in the arms, legs, and torso with more defined shapes. Consider practicing different positions and actions for your figures, so you can capture a variety of poses and scenes.
Remember, drawing people requires practice and patience. Keep it up; you’ll soon be creating lifelike and expressive human figures in no time. Happy drawing!

For example, one of the prompt ideas is “A cityscape at dawn or sunrise”. You can approach it as an overly complicated illustration with a 3-point perspective and 59 buildings from different eras. Or, you can draw a little shop in the middle of a busy street from one point perspective. Or…just one building and a setting sun? You catch my meaning.
This art ideas generator tool is not a one word generator but provides you with a bit more details. You can take the art prompts suggestion and play with it further to achieve the image you want with any level of skills. I hope it will work for most people.

Trump and allies plot revenge, Justice Department control in a second term
Advisers have also discussed deploying the military to quell potential unrest on inauguration day. critics have called the ideas under consideration dangerous and unconstitutional..
Donald Trump and his allies have begun mapping out specific plans for using the federal government to punish critics and opponents should he win a second term, with the former president naming individuals he wants to investigate or prosecute and his associates drafting plans to potentially invoke the Insurrection Act on his first day in office to allow him to deploy the military against civil demonstrations.
In private, Trump has told advisers and friends in recent months that he wants the Justice Department to investigate onetime officials and allies who have become critical of his time in office, including his former chief of staff, John F. Kelly, and former attorney general William P. Barr, as well as his ex-attorney Ty Cobb and former Joint Chiefs of Staff chairman Gen. Mark A. Milley, according to people who have talked to him, who, like others, spoke on the condition of anonymity to describe private conversations. Trump has also talked of prosecuting officials at the FBI and Justice Department, a person familiar with the matter said.
In public, Trump has vowed to appoint a special prosecutor to “go after” President Biden and his family. The former president has frequently made corruption accusations against them that are not supported by available evidence .
To facilitate Trump’s ability to direct Justice Department actions, his associates have been drafting plans to dispense with 50 years of policy and practice intended to shield criminal prosecutions from political considerations. Critics have called such ideas dangerous and unconstitutional.
“It would resemble a banana republic if people came into office and started going after their opponents willy-nilly,” said Saikrishna Prakash, a constitutional law professor at the University of Virginia who studies executive power. “It’s hardly something we should aspire to.”
Trump testifies in New York civil fraud trial: Live updates
Much of the planning for a second term has been unofficially outsourced to a partnership of right-wing think tanks in Washington. Dubbed “Project 2025,” the group is developing a plan, to include draft executive orders, that would deploy the military domestically under the Insurrection Act, according to a person involved in those conversations and internal communications reviewed by The Washington Post. The law, last updated in 1871, authorizes the president to deploy the military for domestic law enforcement.
The proposal was identified in internal discussions as an immediate priority, the communications showed. In the final year of his presidency, some of Trump’s supporters urged him to invoke the Insurrection Act to put down unrest after the murder of George Floyd in the summer of 2020, but he never did it. Trump has publicly expressed regret about not deploying more federal force and said he would not hesitate to do so in the future.
Trump campaign spokesman Steven Cheung did not answer questions about specific actions under discussion. “President Trump is focused on crushing his opponents in the primary election and then going on to beat Crooked Joe Biden,” Cheung said. “President Trump has always stood for law and order, and protecting the Constitution.”
The discussions underway reflect Trump’s determination to harness the power of the presidency to exact revenge on those who have challenged or criticized him if he returns to the White House. The former president has frequently threatened to take punitive steps against his perceived enemies, arguing that doing so would be justified by the current prosecutions against him. Trump has claimed without evidence that the criminal charges he is facing — a total of 91 across four state and federal indictments — were made up to damage him politically.
“This is third-world-country stuff, ‘arrest your opponent,’” Trump said at a campaign stop in New Hampshire in October. “And that means I can do that, too.”
Sign up for The Trump Trials, a weekly newsletter tracking the former president's criminal cases
Special counsel Jack Smith, Attorney General Merrick Garland and Biden have all said that Smith’s prosecution decisions were made independently of the White House, in accordance with department rules on special counsels.
Trump, the clear polling leader in the GOP race, has made “retribution” a central theme of his campaign, seeking to intertwine his own legal defense with a call for payback against perceived slights and offenses to right-wing Americans. He repeatedly tells his supporters that he is being persecuted on their behalf and holds out a 2024 victory as a shared redemption at their enemies’ expense.
‘He is going to go after people that have turned on him’
It is unclear what alleged crimes or evidence Trump would claim to justify investigating his named targets.
Kelly said he would expect Trump to investigate him because since his term as chief of staff ended, he has publicly criticized Trump, including by alleging that he called dead service members “suckers.” Kelly added, “There is no question in my mind he is going to go after people that have turned on him.”
Barr, another Trump appointee turned critic, has contradicted the former president’s false claims about the 2020 election and called him “a very petty individual who will always put his interests ahead of the country’s.” Asked about Trump’s interest in prosecuting him, Barr deadpanned, “I’m quivering in my boots.”
“Trump himself is more likely to rot in jail than anyone on his alleged list,” said Cobb, who accused Trump of “stifling truth, making threats and bullying weaklings into doing his bidding.”
Milley did not comment.
Other modern presidents since the Watergate scandal — when Richard M. Nixon tried to suppress the FBI’s investigation into his campaign’s spying and sabotage against Democrats — have sought to separate politics from law enforcement. Presidents of both parties have imposed a White House policy restricting communications with prosecutors. An effort under the George W. Bush administration to remove U.S. attorneys for political reasons led to high-level resignations and a criminal investigation.
Rod J. Rosenstein, the Trump-appointed deputy attorney general who oversaw the investigation by special counsel Robert S. Mueller III into Russian interference in the 2016 election, said a politically ordered prosecution would violate the 14th Amendment’s guarantee of equal protection under law and could cause judges to dismiss the charges. That constitutional defense has rarely been raised in U.S. history, Rosenstein said.
“Making prosecutorial decisions in a nonpartisan manner is essential to democracy,” Rosenstein said. “The White House should not be meddling in individual cases for political reasons.”
But Trump allies such as Russ Vought, his former budget director who now leads the Center for Renewing America, are actively repudiating the modern tradition of a measure of independence for the Department of Justice, arguing that such independence is not based in law or the Constitution. Vought is in regular contact with Trump and would be expected to hold a major position in a second term.
“You don’t need a statutory change at all, you need a mind-set change,” Vought said in an interview. “You need an attorney general and a White House Counsel’s Office that don’t view themselves as trying to protect the department from the president.”
A fixation on prosecuting enemies
As president, Kelly said, Trump would often suggest prosecuting his political enemies, or at least having the FBI investigate them. Kelly said he would not pass along the requests to the Justice Department but would alert the White House Counsel’s Office. Usually, they would ignore the orders, he said, and wait for Trump to move on. In a second term, Trump’s aides could respond to such requests differently, he said.
“The lesson the former president learned from his first term is don’t put guys like me … in those jobs,” Kelly said. “The lesson he learned was to find sycophants.”
Although aides have worked on plans for some other agencies, Trump has taken a particular interest in the Justice Department. In conversations about a potential second term, Trump has made picking an attorney general his number one priority, according a Trump adviser.
“Given his recent trials and tribulations, one would think he’s going to pick up the plan for the Department of Justice before doing some light reading of a 500-page white paper on reforming the EPA,” said Matt Mowers, a former Trump White House adviser.
Jeffrey Clark, a fellow at Vought’s think tank, is leading the work on the Insurrection Act under Project 2025. The Post has reported that Clark is one of six unnamed co-conspirators whose actions are described in Trump’s indictment in the federal election interference case.
Clark was also charged in Fulton County, Georgia, with violating the state anti-racketeering law and attempting to create a false statement, as part of the district attorney’s case accusing Trump and co-conspirators of interfering in the 2020 election. Clark has pleaded not guilty. As a Justice Department official after the 2020 election, Clark pressured superiors to investigate nonexistent election crimes and to encourage state officials to submit phony certificates to the electoral college, according to the indictment.
In one conversation described in the federal indictment, a deputy White House counsel warned Clark that Trump’s refusing to leave office would lead to “riots in every major city.” Clark responded, according to the indictment , “That’s why there’s an Insurrection Act.”
Clark had dinner with Trump during a visit to his Bedminster, N.J., golf club this summer. He also went to Mar-a-Lago on Wednesday for a screening of a new Dinesh D’Souza movie that uses falsehoods, misleading interviews and dramatizations to allege federal persecution of Jan. 6 rioters and Christians. Also attending were fringe allies such as Stephen K. Bannon, Roger Stone, Laura Loomer and Michael Flynn.
“I think that the supposedly independent DOJ is an illusion,” Clark said in an interview. Through a spokeswoman he did not respond to follow-up questions about his work on the Insurrection Act.
Clark’s involvement with Project 2025 has alarmed some other conservative lawyers who view him as an unqualified choice to take a senior leadership role at the department, according to a conservative lawyer who spoke on the condition of anonymity to describe private talks. Project 2025 comprises 75 groups in a collaboration organized by the Heritage Foundation.
Project 2025 director Paul Dans stood by Clark in a statement. “We are grateful for Jeff Clark’s willingness to share his insights from having worked at high levels in government during trying times,” he said.
After online publication of this story, Rob Bluey, a Heritage spokesman, said: “There are no plans within Project 2025 related to the Insurrection Act or targeting political enemies.”
How a second Trump term would differ from the first
There is a heated debate in conservative legal circles about how to interact with Trump as the likely nominee. Many in Trump’s circle have disparaged what they view as institutionalist Republican lawyers, particularly those associated with the Federalist Society. Some Trump advisers consider these individuals too soft and accommodating to make the kind of changes within agencies that they want to see happen in a second Trump administration.
Trump has told advisers that he is looking for lawyers who are loyal to him to serve in a second term — complaining about his White House Counsel’s Office unwillingness to go along with some of his ideas in his first term or help him in his bid to overturn his 2020 election defeat.
In repeated comments to advisers and lawyers around him, Trump has said his biggest regrets were naming Jeff Sessions and Barr as his attorneys general and listening to others — he often cites the “Federalist Society” — who wanted him to name lawyers with impressive pedigrees and Ivy League credentials to senior Justice Department positions. He has mentioned to several lawyers who have defended him on TV or attacked Biden that they would be a good candidate for attorney general, according to people familiar with his comments.
The overall vision that Trump, his campaign and outside allies are now discussing for a second term would differ from his first in terms of how quickly and forcefully officials would move to execute his orders. Alumni involved in the current planning generally fault a slow start, bureaucratic resistance and litigation for hindering the president’s agenda in his first term, and they are determined to avoid those hurdles, if given a second chance, by concentrating more power in the West Wing and selecting appointees who will carry out Trump’s demands.
Those groups are in discussions with Trump’s campaign advisers and occasionally the candidate himself, sometimes circulating policy papers or draft executive orders, according to people familiar with the situation.
“No one is opposed to them putting together ideas, but it’s not us,” a campaign adviser said. “These groups say they’ll have the whole transition planned. Some of those people I’m sure are good and Trump will appoint, but it’s not what is on his mind right now. I’m sure he’d be fine with some of their orders.”
Trump’s core group of West Wing advisers for a second term is widely expected to include Stephen Miller, the architect of Trump’s hard-line immigration policies including family separation, who has gone on to challenge Biden administration policies in court through a conservative organization called America First Legal. Miller did not respond to requests for comment.
Alumni have also saved lists of previous appointees who would not be welcome in a second Trump administration, as well as career officers they viewed as uncooperative and would seek to fire based on an executive order to weaken civil service protections.
For other appointments, Trump would be able to draw on lineups of personnel prepared by Project 2025. Dans, a former Office of Personnel Management chief of staff, likened the database to a “conservative LinkedIn,” allowing applicants to present their resumes on public profiles, while also providing a shared workspace for Heritage and partner organizations to vet the candidates and make recommendations.
“We don’t want careerists, we don’t want people here who are opportunists,” he said. “We want conservative warriors.”
Marianne LeVine and Karen DeYoung contributed to this report.
