Counting Kindergarten Math Worksheets

Numbers and counting are a very important part of our daily lives. It is crucial to teach children about numbers and counting at a very young age. These math worksheets for kids like counting kindergarten math worksheets are the best tool to help kids practice counting. Kids know numbers from a very young age but they need to understand that each number represents a quantity. As they enter kindergarten, they develop a basic sense of how numbers function and learn to count. But, they might not know how to count accurately or sequentially. For example, a child might know the numbers from 1 to 10. But they might not know how to count 10 beads accurately and bring it to you.

Understanding numbers and counting is a very important skill that forms a foundation for learning more advanced mathematical concepts as children advance in school. Counting shows children how numbers relate to each other. At this age, children should be given lots of opportunities to count and experience numbers. Repeated experience helps children relate number words to number quantities. This will aid them in counting objects fluently. Include hands-on activities, counting games and counting kindergarten math worksheets in their daily routine to help your child learn to count.

Easy Ways to Teach Kindergartners How to Count

The first thing you should do is cultivate a love for numbers in the child. When a child loves to do a particular activity, they repeat it often. This helps them learn on their own. In early childhood, children learn best through playing, exploration and imagination. Tap into this and build counting activities around playing to ensure they enjoy it. Math is everywhere around us. You can introduce your child to counting at the park or while they are playing with toys, in the kitchen etc. Once they know the numbers and can count fairly well, reinforce the knowledge by practicing using counting kindergarten math worksheets. Teaching little children to count is fairly easy, all you have to do is make it a hands-on activity.

Learning the Numbers

Before a child learns how to count, they should be fairly familiar with the numbers till at least 20. Introduce them to numbers using a number chart. Point out each number, say the name of the number out loud and ask the child to repeat after you. Once the child learns the names of the number, illustrate it’s meaning to show them what the number represents. For example: When the child learns the number 1, first point out the number on the chart. Then show them the quantity that the number represents, so show them 1 finger, 1 cube, 1 orange, 1 toy, etc.

To ensure that they’ve learnt the concept, test the child. Ask them to bring you 1 banana or 1 pillow. Repeat this until they understand and then move on to the next number.

Check out these great number games for kids on Osmo to help learn the numbers.

Counting Using the Sense of Touch

Little kids learn best when they can touch and feel things. Teach them how to count using objects they can see and feel. Use pens, candies, toys and fruits to help them to count. But use only one thing at a time so they don’t get confused. For example: Place 6 oranges in front of the child and ask them to count and tell you how many oranges they have.

Counting Using Games

All sorts of play are educational for children. So, turn counting into a game to help your child learn to count. For example: Include your children when you’re cooking and ask them to count carrots or green beans or dried pasta. You can use whatever vegetables you’re cooking with. Or, you could ask them to help lay the table and get them to count the knives and forks, etc.

Another game you could play with your child is “number of the day.” Pick a number for the day and ask your child to count that many objects and place them in front of you. For example: If the number of the day is 5, ask your child to pick 5 apples, 5 beads, 5 spoons and so on.

Our daily lives are full of opportunities that can be used to teach your child to count. For example: Take your child for a walk and ask them to count the number of white houses and blue houses on the block.

Playing games are educational activities that help children learn easily. But, playing alone won’t suffice. Kids need to practice what they’ve learnt to retain and reiterate the information later. Counting kindergarten math worksheets are a great way to help your child revise the counting lesson and retain the information in their memory.

It’s not enough just to know how to count and recite the numbers. Children should be able to write the numbers too. Counting kindergarten math worksheets will help your child learn how to read, write and count numbers. Sometimes, kids might get the sequence of numbers confused when they’re just reciting the numbers. But, practicing on worksheets will drive this concept into their minds. With constant practice on worksheets, kindergarteners will learn to recite the numbers and count fluently.
