Mass Effect 2 Mission Order: optimal DLC, dossier, loyalty quest sequence

Just like its predecessor, Mass Effect 2 has an open-ended story that lets you tackle its various objectives in a relatively open-ended manner - and that means some people are inevitably going to be struck wondering what the best mission order for ME2 might look like.

Just like our suggestions on the ME1 mission order , any list you’ll find from us or anyone else online is merely a suggestion - but there are definitely certain missions that work better than others in certain places within ME2’s story. On top of that, there’s also more DLC missions in this game than its predecessor, and slotting those into the story is… quite difficult, honestly.

On this page, we proffer our suggestion for the optimum sequence of story missions and events in Mass Effect 2. Simple!

Mass Effect 2 Mission Order: optimal order for recruitment, loyalty & DLC missions

The basic structure of Mass Effect 2 is pretty simple. It starts you off with a string of prologue missions where it’ll ferry you from event to event, including two story mission planets that have combat encounters and even an early mini boss battle of sorts. After that, you’ll get your ship - and this is where the game opens up.

From here on out, ME2 is broken into segments. You get your ship and a smattering of story ‘recruitment’ missions to build your team. After recruiting all the available team members, you will automatically go to the story planet of Horizon for a mandatory story interlude. After that, you’ll get more missions. After finishing five of those, you’ll have another mandatory story mission. From there, you can complete whatever you like to the end.

No missions are mandatory, but towards the end of the game taking on too many side missions & optional assignments after a time-sensitive story event can have a negative impact on the end of the game. This guide avoids that, but check out our Mass Effect 2 Suicide Mission & endings guide for more detailed information on how to avoid that.

Below is our suggested mission order. While we've built in a few breaks where we suggest you tackle side missions and scan planets for resources, we also recommend you do this as often as you like throughout the game to break things up. The only exception is once you get the Reaper IFF - before doing that, you should complete absolutely everything you need to.

Remember that the mission order presented on this page is just a suggestion; deviate from it as much as you like.

Act 1 Mission Order: Cerberus and Building a Team

  • Prologue: Awakening & Freedom’s Progress: as mentioned above, for the first few hours of the game, things will play out in a linear fashion. Just complete all the missions until you get your ship.
  • Return to the Citadel: while you have pressing matters to deal with on Omega, first direct the Normandy back to the Citadel. Here you can meet with Anderson, announce your return, potentially get your Spectre status back, shop at stores including for some Normandy side quest items, complete a few other side quests.
  • Dossier: The Master Thief:  while on the Citadel, you should also immediately recruit Kasumi, if you've got access to her DLC.
  • Omega intro & side activities: once you've visited the Citadel, head to your originally suggested destination, Omega. Here you'll need to speak to Aria to learn more about the next few story missions, shop at stores, and generally get to know the area.
  • Dossier: The Veteran:  as soon as you land on Omega, you can and should also immediately recruit Zaeed,
  • Dossier: The Professor: after speaking to Aria, you'll have all the info you need to undertake two different recruitment missions on Omega. Recruit the Professor first.
  • Early DLC Adventures Firewalker & Crash Site: leave Omega and head out into space. There’s a few things you should do out here:
  • Normandy Crash Site: this is a short and simple DLC quest that was originally a pre-order bonus. It’s got decent rewards, and some nice ME1 fanservice.
  • Project Firewalker: this DLC will take you to several places and give you access to a vehicle that otherwise isn't used in the core ME2 story. It's worth getting this quest out of the way here, and early, as it has good rewards.
  • Kasumi's Loyalty Mission - Stealing Memory: this is Kasumi's loyalty mission, and we're making it the first of these missions we do primarily because it has some great rewards and resources, including the best SMG Mass Effect 2 has to offer. If your choice of character class relies on the SMG, do this mission now. Otherwise, you can bump it back to after recruiting Archangel.
  • Dossier: Archangel: also on Omega, you can complete a mission to recruit the mysterious crusading mercenary Archangel. You can actually do this before or after the next step, but since you're already at Omega, it's easy to do it right after the previous recruitment mission.
  • Planet Scanning & Material Gathering break: a big part of ME2 is scanning planets and gathering materials. The amount of materials you have can impact ME3, as can the upgrades you've purchased for your ship. With Mordin in the science bay, you'll have your first unlocks available - so take some time to scan some planets and gather some resources. You're free to tackle any side missions you discover if you want, or you can save them for later.
  • Dossier: The Convict: your team currently lacks a dedicated Biotic - so to fill that mage-shaped hole in your ME2 squad, go recruit Jack next.
  • Dossier: The Warlord: next, go and grab Grunt, Mass Effect 2's Krogan squad member. After completing the mission, he doesn't automatically join your party - go and get him on the lower floors of the Normandy if you want to have him join the crew properly.
  • Horizon [automatic]: after all of the current batch of recruitment missions is complete, you'll be forced to tackle a mission on Horizon.

Act 2 Mission Order: Old Friends & Loyalties

  • Dossier: Tali: she's been off your team for too long - is it really the Normandy without her aboard? Go get Tali. If Kal’Reegar survives, it’ll make Tali’s later loyalty mission easier.
  • Visiting Illium: for a nice change of scenery, head to Illium, the next hub planet and home to another recruit. Catch up with Liara, but do not take her up on the offer to help her with the Shadow Broker after completing her short side quest. We'll save that for later. There's other side quests you can do on Illium also, plus new shops and so on.
  • OPTIONAL // Lair of the Shadow Broker (Give Liara Intel):  we don't really like this mission in this position, but you've got two choices - do it here to get significant rewards for the rest of the game, or save it for the post-game where it fits best for story. The choice is yours. If you do it here, Liara becomes an easy source of free upgrades and resources, with new ones added every time you complete a main story quest.
  • Dossier: The Assassin: complete this mission to recruit Thane. There’s a cool ME1 callback here if you did a certain side quest.
  • Dossier: The Justicar: a straightforward quest with no major consequences down the line. It gets you Samara.
  • Scanning, Materials & Upgrades break: while you can do side quests whenever you like, this is another ideal period to take a load off and do any side content, scanning planets, and purchasing any upgrades you can afford. Major story events are coming, so it’s good to be prepared.
  • Visiting Tuchanka: you heard a lot about the Krogan homeworld of Tuchanka in the first Mass Effect, but now you can experience it. There’s all the normal hub world distractions here, plus a chance to reunite with a friend if they survived ME1.
  • Mordin’s Loyalty Mission - Old Blood: while on Tuchanka, undertake Mordin’s loyalty quest. This is a quest whose repercussions will echo loudly in ME3 , so consider your choices carefully.
  • Grunt’s Loyalty Mission - Rite of Passage: While you’re on Tuchanka, also undertake Grunt’s loyalty mission. Be sure to bring another squadmate with a high damage output on this one, like Zaeed. You only have to survive the battle for 5 minutes, but if you successfully kill the beast you’ll get an even better reward.
  • Collector Vessel [automatic]: like Horizon, this is a generally story-advancing mission that’ll trigger automatically after you’ve logged five missions post-Horizon. You’ll also be able to pick a weapon specialization here.

Act 3 Mission Order: Loyalties Secured

  • Jacob’s Loyalty Mission - The Gift of Greatness: this is a straightforward mission.
  • Miranda’s Loyalty Mission - The Prodigal: another straightforward mission, with choices that will be minorly referenced in ME3.
  • Garrus’ Loyalty Mission - Eye for an Eye: help Garrus get his revenge.
  • Thane’s Loyalty Mission - Sins of the Father: you must stay close to your target and get the information you ended at the end.
  • Samara’s Loyalty Mission - The Ardat-Yakshi: you must successfully lure Morinth and not lose her in order to obtain loyalty.
  • To get the best ending of this mission, both Kal’Reegar and Veetor must have survived the earlier Tali missions & be present.
  • Jack’s Loyalty Mission - Subject Zero: after completing this simple mission, Jack and Miranda will have a fight. You must resolve it with a Paragon or Renegade dialogue option to keep both of them loyal; taking a side revokes one character’s loyalty.
  • Zaeed’s Loyalty Mission - The Price of Revenge: at the end of the mission, you must make a choice between Zaeed’s wishes and innocent lives. Renegade Shepard can easily side with Zaeed and get his loyalty; Paragon Shepard must pass a difficult check to talk him down and keep him loyal.
  • Project Overlord: this DLC is a multi-mission series and brings back the vehicle from the Firewalker DLC. It also has minor repercussions in ME3, depending on the coices you make.
  • The Point of No Return: at this point, you should have one story mission on your plate - the Reaper IFF. Once you tackle this mission, it’s a rollercoaster ride to the end - so make sure you have all character loyalties, Normandy upgrades, have completed side missions, and done everything you want to do on hub planets. Treat starting the Reaper IFF Mission as ME2's point of no return .

ME2 Ending & Postgame

  • IMPORTANT NOTE:  after acquiring the Reaper IFF, you can only trigger two specific missions without incurring negative consequences - Legion's Loyalty Mission and Tali's Loyalty Mission. If you take on ANY OTHER MISSION, some of Normandy's crew will die during the Suicide Mission. Do not travel to any other location other than those two missions, not even to scan planets .
  • Tali’s Loyalty Mission - Treason: as well as being a mission you can fail, the outcome has major repercussions in ME3. If you didn't do this mission earlier, you can now do it here and take Legion along for the ride, resulting in some very unique dialogue. To get the best ending of this mission, both Kal’Reegar and Veetor must have survived the earlier Tali missions & be present.
  • Legion’s Loyalty Mission - A House Divided: complete this loyalty mission. At the end, Tali and Legion will end up in conflict. As with Jack and Miranda, use the Paragon or Renegade dialogue option to end the argument without losing either’s loyalty.
  • The Suicide Mission: after some story events that begin the next time you access the Galaxy Map, you’ll finally undertake the ME2 finale. Head through the Omega 4 Relay - and brush up on how to get the best ending with our ME2 Suicide Mission walkthrough . After the game is over, load up your completed game to tackle two DLC missions best experienced post-game.
  • Lair of the Shadow Broker / Give Liara Intel: go back to Illium and finally talk to Liara about starting this mission. While this DLC mission will be on your galaxy map from early on and you'll have to actively avoid starting it on your earlier visit to Illium, it works best as a coda to ME2 in our opinion. It’s arguably the best mission in the game; enjoy it!
  • Arrival: this DLC was the last released for ME2, and basically is a little mini prologue to Mass Effect 3. It actually becomes available any time after Horizon, but it totally fits best into the story if you do it here, at the very end of ME2. After it’s complete, save - and move on to ME3 - which we also have an ME3 mission order guide for, too!

Citadel: Found Forged ID

  • Edit source
  • View history

Two asari travelers are stuck and they need help from uppity humans

A forged ID has been located while assaulting Harkin 's hideout in the Zakera Wards factory district. It may prove useful to someone.

Alternative journal entry : An asari in Zakera Ward is having trouble getting authorization to leave the Citadel . She is on Level 27, near the stairs down to Level 26.

  • 1 Acquisition
  • 2 Walkthrough
  • 3 Mission Summary

Acquisition [ ]

The assignment is acquired and completed in one of two ways on the Citadel :

  • During Garrus ' loyalty mission, there are forged IDs right before the battle with two YMIR Mechs . Picking it up activates the assignment, initially called Citadel: Found Forged ID in the Journal .
  • After completing Thane 's loyalty mission, there are two asari sitting on the couch near the stairs that take you down to Level 26, under the Level 27 Sign on the west of the map. Hearing one of them speak will activate the assignment. If the assignment is acquired this way, it is called Citadel: False Positives . If you already have the IDs from Garrus' loyalty mission, the assignment name still changes to Citadel: False Positives.

Regardless of how you get the assignment, you must finish Thane's loyalty mission first to complete it.

Walkthrough [ ]

Kalara Tomi

Talk to an asari named Kalara Tomi sitting on a couch with another asari in the transit corridor between the middle (Level 27) and west (Level 26) sections of the map. She complains of being flagged as a potential for geth infiltration, apparently for no reason.

At this point, you can resolve the assignment in a few ways, each with their own associated rewards :

  • If you have the fake IDs, simply give them to her in the same conversation and the assignment is complete. This option only gives the standard experience and credit rewards listed below. Note: Exploring the investigate options will remove the option to give the IDs, although you can try it again by talking to her again.
  • If you have the fake IDs, offer to help and exit the conversation (exploring the investigate paths optional). You'll learn that you need to talk to C-Sec Customs, which is located to the left of the entrance to the Zakera Ward dock opposite of the Gunnery Chief . If you don't want to deal with C-Sec Customs, the next time you talk to Kalara you can still give her the fake IDs. In addition to the experience and credit rewards, this also yields 5 Renegade points. Note: Giving a snarky initial response to Kalara will not activate the objective pointer to the customs agent even if you gain the same investigate options; the offer to help must be explicit.
  • If you do not have or do not wish to give the fake IDs yet, offer to help. As with above, you need to talk to C-Sec Customs. If your Paragon / Renegade score is high enough (or if you regained your Spectre status) the customs officer can be persuaded to allow the asari to leave. Telling the asari the good news will grant you 2 more Paragon points, or if you change your mind you can still give them the fake IDs for 5 Renegade points.
  • If you do not have the fake IDs, have not done Garrus' loyalty mission, but have done Thane's loyalty mission, you may be able to complete both. First, do Thane's loyalty mission before Garrus', and convince C-Sec security. Then do Garrus' loyalty mission, acquire the fake IDs, and turn them in to the women (they will be back, i.e. you can complete the assignment twice and are rewarded twice). If they do not reappear after completing Garrus' mission, you cannot complete it a second time.
  • If you imported a character from Mass Effect where you chose to abandon the Council, her attitude will be hostile toward you and humanity . Being rude back to her causes the assignment in the Journal to be completed with no experience. However, apologizing and asking if they need help will allow you to complete the assignment normally, either by giving them the IDs or talking to C-Sec. The Journal entry will not change and will remain listed as though you did nothing to help them but credits and experience will be rewarded as normal. After apologizing you can also 'put Kalara in her place' since she won't accept your apology, instead of helping her. This, again, will give no experience, renegade points or credits.

Note that the Forged IDs are found only during Garrus' loyalty mission at the C-Sec warehouse, in the small room before the two big mechs with the shutters. Even if this assignment has already been completed, the IDs can still be obtained, although nothing can be done with them.

Mission Summary [ ]

  • 1000 (Talking to C-Sec Customs or giving the asari the fake IDs)
  • Experience reward: 40 (50)
  • If Thane's loyalty mission is active, the asari will not be on the couch. Simply finish it up and check back.
  • In both versions, giving them the IDs will end the assignment with a 1000 credit reward, but without giving Renegade points. To avoid this, you can ask the asari who to talk to, which will update your journal after the conversation ends. Talk to her again, and you can give her the forged IDs, and this time you will get +5 Renegade points.
  • After completing the assignment by giving the asari the forged IDs, you will still be able to talk to C-Sec customs about the asari and update the journal, even though the assignment is marked as completed. This also gives you the opportunity to gain extra Paragon or Renegade scores with dialogue choices.
  • In some cases, while playing the Xbox 360 version of the game, once the Forged IDs are acquired, you can only find Kalara on Disc One. She and the other asari may not show up on Disc Two, and if this is the case try saving the game in front of Kalara. If that does not open up the dialogue option with her, you simply must return to the Normandy, save, and change discs.
  • In some cases, you must choose the "Let me help" option when first talking to Kalara in order to get the prompt to talk to C-Sec Customs.
  • When playing a female Shepard, the C-Sec Customs officer will greet you by saying, "Can I help you ma'am?" but will then refer to you as "sir" when asked about why the asari were denied departure clearance.

A New Strike Team is formed…

Under the global assault of the Thousand Petals Coalition a new strike team has been tasked to capture and secure Arkangel assets before they fall into the hands of the Coalition.

We'll share full details with you as we get closer to the launch of this all-new event in the coming weeks. Expect new earnable cosmetics to acquire and we look forward to seeing you outsmart the opposition.

Areas of Improvements

Vehicle Improvements

We’re happy to see that Attack Helicopters since our latest changes have become a force to be reckoned with, with players engaging with them more and more, as well as finding out new ways to use them to their advantage on the Battlefield. We think that they are, for most part, in a good spot. However, due to the combined firepower of both pilot and gunner they have been over performing in one aspect: Destroying Armored Ground Vehicles.

We believe at its current state the Attack Helicopter can easily destroy any vehicle in too short of a timeframe and we are toning that down a little by reducing the firepower of some of the more potent weapons vs armored vehicles, to address this:

  • We have lowered the damage of the TOW missile against heavy and medium armored vehicles (Tanks, Wildcat, Ram)
  • We have also lowered the damage of Anti Vehicle Rocket Pods to the same category of vehicles by 20%. We believe Attack Helicopters should still be potent and a direct counter to ground armor, however these changes are aiming to give a bigger window for ground vehicles to react and to also push pilots to make more tactical decisions when attacking vehicles.

APS Shootdown Sentinel

We are aware of the long lasting issue of vehicles camping hills and it has become a bit more exaggerated when Irish’ APS Shootdown Sentinel is included into this equation.

With Update #7.2.0 we are removing the capabilities for this Specialist Gadget to shootdown any Anti Vehicle Weapon or Gadgets. This should allow Air Vehicles and Infantry to once again attack such ground vehicles, as well as pushing the gadget itself into a more infantry-focused mentality.

This Season in general we are aiming to slightly slow down the pace of the game and the biggest offenders that can oftentimes feel like they are pushing the limits too much. We are starting with MacKay by making his gadget more defensive and strategic rather than having it as an aggressive enabler offensively.

To do that we are increasing the cooldown of the grapple from 11 seconds to 25 and we are also lowering the boost of his trait “Nimble” which grants a boost to movement speed while aiming down sights from 40% to 25%.

Additionally, in a future patch, we will be implementing a force reload animation when equipping the weapon to further emphasize the strategic use of the gadget.

Systemic repair

Continuing with the effort to slow down the pace of the game, we are increasing the time it takes for the systemic repair system to repair the health of a vehicle. The rate at which this repairs is defined by the role and class type of the vehicle in consideration with their gameplay expectations.

All vehicles beside Bolte, EBLC-Ram, the upcoming Draugr and all ground transport vehicles will repair 25HP in 8.6 seconds, up from 5 seconds. This change is meant to emphasize the role of engineers and help slow down the pace in these combat moments, where before it was possible to nullify taken damage nearly instantaneously by pressing a single button.

AI, Soldiers & General Improvements

  • Anti-Tank Mine damage has received a rebalance following recent updates, it will now take 3 Anti-Tank Mines to fully destroy a Heavy Vehicle such as a Tank or MAV. It will still remain possible to destroy Medium Armored Vehicles such as the Wildcat and EBLC-Ram with 2 Anti-Tank Mines.
  • Fixed an issue with the SOFLAM being unable to deploy on select Battlefield Portal experiences.
  • Irish’s APS-36 Shootdown Sentinel should no longer stop Underbarrel Smoke Grenades.
  • Additionally, the APS-36 Shootdown Sentinel will no longer stop Anti Vehicle Projectiles.
  • MacKay’s Nimble Trait which improves the speed of movement during ADS has been reduced from 40% to 25%.
  • Grappling Hook reload speed has now been increased from 11 seconds to 25 seconds. In a future update, we will be introducing a reload animation every time this Specialist Gadget is equipped.

Weapon Balancing

  • Despite the penguins' continued efforts to keep them shiny, the Scope Glint on the Raven and ACOG Sights on the SVD is no more.
  • Fixed an issue with some magazines on the AK 5C that could cause their models to turn invisible.
  • Fixed the alignment of the iron sights on the AK-24 skins "Dead-Center" and "Access Memory".
  • Fixed 12M Auto shell ejection when using the Type 4 Heavy Suppressor.
  • Fixed pellet spread on SPAS-12 (BC2/BF3) being too low.
  • The Penguins forgot to reflect the AKS-74u rate of fire change from Update 7.1 in the Collection screen, it is now accurately shown. We’ll get them notepads in the future.
  • Slightly slowed down hip fire dispersion reset on P90, PP-2000 and AKS-74u.
  • AM40 Standard Issue damage under 10 meters changed from 26 to 24.
  • AM40 dispersion and horizontal recoil increased by 5%.
  • VHX-D3 High Power ammo damage under 20 meters changed from 25 to 24.
  • LCMG dispersion when using the Shortened barrel attachment increased by 10%. This change should help balance both the attachment against other barrel options while also balancing the LCMG compared to other LMGs.

Visual Weapon Recoil Improvements

Further tweaks and improvements for the following Weapon and Scope combinations:

  • PBX-45: XDR Holo, TV, UH-1, Shan, Bravo, Ghost Hybrid, 8R Holo, Maul Hybrid, M22, K8 Holo, Raven, TR-1 Thermal.
  • PP-29: K8 Holo, Fusion Holo, Ghost Hybrid, Shan, 8R Holo, TV, XO Smart, Maul Hybrid, M22, XDR Holo, Bravo, UH-1 Smart, TR-1 Thermal.
  • P90: Reflex, Holographic, XDR Holo, ACOG, Bravo, TV, 8R Holo, Maul Hybrid, XO Smart, TR-1 Thermal, UH-1.
  • AKS-74u: ACOG, Maul Hybrid, Bravo.
  • PP-2000: Maul Hybrid, Bravo, XO Smart, Ghost Hybrid.
  • Improvements to Visual Weapon Recoil on heavy sidearms (M44, etc.) and scopes Raven 4X, TV 2X, XDR

Bolt & Lever Action

  • Improvements to Visual Weapon Recoil on GVT 45-70 and the following sights for bolt-action weapons: UH Smart 1.5x, SHAN 2.5X, Raven 4X, M22 3.5X, Maul Hybrid 1.5-3X, PSO-1M3 5x

Assault Rifles

  • Improvements to Visual Weapon Recoil on AEK-971, VHX-D3, GEW-46, MTAR-21 and ACOG sight
  • Improvements to Visual Weapon Recoil on LMGs, particularly when using thermal sights, Raven, ACOG and Bravo sights, and further improvements to keep reticle point close to screen center
  • Adjustment to the damage vehicles take when colliding with other objects.
  • Reduced range of attack helicopter thermal gunner from 600 to 450.
  • Fixed an issue where EMP would permanently disable the Polaris Sportsman.
  • Improvements made towards lock on missiles missing certain air vehicles that are locked onto.
  • Improvement to frogfoot rocket pods zero-point.
  • Removed the Gunner HUD from side passengers of Condor and HIND, going forward only the nose gunner will benefit from this.
  • Fixed lock-on weapons killing the pilot of Nightbird and not dealing damage to the vehicle.
  • Lowered main heavy tanks steering sensitivity when the sprint button is held.
  • Increased rudder responsiveness on 2042-era Jets which will lead to a more responsive yaw input.

Systemic Repair Changes:

  • Combat vehicles aside from Bolte, EBLC Ram and the upcoming Draugr will take 25HP in 8.6 seconds. Other vehicles will remain at 25HP in 5 seconds.
  • Increased HMG Weapon Station Velocity from 600 to 690
  • Lowered Attack Helicopter TOW Launcher damage to Main Heavy Tanks from 30 to 25 and to Medium Armor such as the Wildcat from 35 to 30. This is not a blanket change and will not impact other vehicles such as Transport or Air Vehicles
  • Helicopter Anti Vehicle Pods will deal 20% less impact damage and further blast damage reduction to Ground Armor.

TOW Balancing Changes:

Air Attack Vehicles

  • Time to live increased from 5 to 10 seconds
  • Max speed lowered from 120 to 80
  • Turn angles and engine time to live have been adjusted for better control

Ground Vehicles

  • Time to live increased from 10 to 15 seconds
  • Speed lowered from 120 to 50

This announcement may change as we listen to community feedback and continue developing and evolving our Live Service & Content. We will always strive to keep our community as informed as possible.
