Great Periodic Table documents for Microsoft Office

There are some great and editable Periodic Table of Elements options available in Microsoft Office – Word documents, Excel spreadsheets and PowerPoint slides

There are many Periodic Table ‘documents’ on the net but most are PDF’s or images that can’t be changed.

We’re looking for editable Word documents and Excel worksheets that you can adapt, recolor or redesign to suit your needs.

Excel spreadsheet from Jeff Bigler

Microsoft has a download they immodestly and wrongly call the Ultimate Periodic Table worksheet.  It’s hardly the ‘Ultimate’, that award goes to a Massachusetts high school teacher.

The wonderful Periodic Table worksheet at MrBigler.com is more than just a table of elements. It also has lists of the elements. Jeff Bigler must have spent a lot of time putting it together.

The main Periodic Table tab is filled with links to the list of elements on the ‘PT Included Fields’ tab.

periodic table worksheet word document

It’s the most comprehensive Excel Periodic Table of Elements we could find. Each element cell has the atomic number, ions commonly formed, symbol, name and atomic mass.

periodic table worksheet word document

All that detail is in the list on the ‘PT Included Fields’ tab. There are other tabs with more element data in list form.

periodic table worksheet word document

The Excel lists are not modern Excel Tables with all the benefits they have, but that makes little difference to the usefulness of this worksheet.

Our only concern is that the MrBigler.com download is in the older .xls format. We generally recommended avoiding downloads/email attachments in the old .doc .xls .ppt formats.  See Why you should delete .doc .xls .ppt files .  But this worksheet is so damn good.  Download it and convert to .xlsx.  If you use the worksheet, make sure to credit Jeff Bigler .

Paul Brandt has some more colorful Excel worksheets, Periodic Table 1.xlsx and Periodic Table 2.xlsx

Word documents

As we said, PDF Periodic Tables are aplenty. Editable Word documents in .docx format are a little harder to find.

There are many variations on the Periodic Table document.  Some have minimal information, for use in exams while others have a lot of information or nicer designs.

A forum page at IonicViper.org has some nice contributions.

Barbara Reisner has a minimalist, exam-ready Periodic Table

Matthew Riehl contributes a more informative Periodic Table document .

periodic table worksheet word document

PowerPoint slides

Any of the Word or Excel versions can be copied/pasted into PowerPoint, either directly or as an image.  But if you’re looking for something in PPTX format …

Margaret Scheuermann has a plain but detailed PowerPoint slide either with element names or not .

There are more elements to be found ….

Well, plenty more Periodic Tables variations.  If the above options don’t suit you, go hunting the web for others.  Use the filetype:   search parameter to limit your results to Word filetype:docx  Excel filetype:xlsx or PowerPoint filetype:pptx

Tex / LaTex versions

No real connection with Microsoft Office, but if you’re looking for a Tex/LaTex version of the Periodic Table, head over to GitHub .

Tom Lehrer’s Periodic Table song

No mention of the Periodic Table is complete without T om Lehrer, the world’s funniest mathematician .  There are several videos that have added animations to his song …

This and any other YouTube video can be added to a PowerPoint slide or How to download a YouTube video .

A scrolling list of the elements , useful if you’re trying to memorize the song.

The great man himself, Tom Lehrer live in Copenhagen .

Periodic Table of Videos

Brady Haran and the University of Nottingham have made a video about each of the known elements .

20 Printable Periodic Tables – Editable – Word, PDF

A periodic table (also known as the periodic table of elements) is arranged in such a manner so that you can easily distinguish the properties of various elements, such as their mass, electron number, electron structure, and their unique chemical compositions. It is a display of chemical elements organized by atomic number, electron configuration, and chemical properties. When you go through this table, you will see that metals and nonmetals are on different sides of the table. The metals appear on the left, while non-metals appear on the right side. This table is also used in schools in chemistry lessons to help students understand the various elements, their properties, and interactions with each other. For you to understand this table comprehensively, knowing what the periodic law states are essential.

It states that when elements are organized in order of increasing atomic mass, some groups of properties recur regularly. This law was established by Dmitri Mendeleev and Lothar Meyer in 1869 . Periodic law is considered to be among the most fundamental principles of chemistry. All chemists use the Periodic Law when working with chemical elements, their properties, and chemical reactions. Periodic law has contributed to the creation of the modern periodic table.

In this article, we have explained the periodic table in its fullness to help you understand it better than before.

Free Charts

The periodic table is a scientific table consisting of rows and columns. Columns are the groups, while rows are the periods. The rows and columns are then packed with elements corresponding to the different groups and periods indicated. You need to know the number of electrons an atom has to understand this table. Here, we have periodic table charts that are easy to understand. Feel free to download them and gain knowledge and understanding of this table.

Modern Periodic Table

This table is also used to group the elements today. The modern table is based on Mendeleev’s table, except that the modern table arranges the elements by increasing the atomic number instead of the atomic mass. The atomic number is the number of protons in an atom, which is unique to each element. The new table has more elements than Mendeleev’s table since more elements have been found since Mendeleev’s time.

Who Invented It

The elements of the periodic table were not all discovered at the same time. Different scientists found various elements at different times.

The following people are the ones who found different elements in the periodic table:

John newlands

Around 47 elements were identified at the beginning of the 19th century , giving enough evidence for chemists to begin to see trends. John Newlands wrote his Rule of Octaves in 1865 . The Rule of Octaves had two elements in one box and did not make space for undiscovered elements, so it was ridiculed and did not gain attention.

Lothar meyer

A year earlier ( 1864 ), Lothar Meyer released a periodic table describing the placement of 28 elements. Meyer’s table divided the elements into groups organized according to their atomic weights. His table classified the elements into six families according to their importance and was the first attempt to group the elements according to this property.

Dmitri mendeleev

Many people assume that Mendelev was the one who invented the modern periodic table. In a lecture to the Russian Chemical Society, Dmitry Mendeleev introduced his periodic table of elements based on increasing atomic weight on 6 March 1869 . Although Mendeleev’s table was the first to achieve recognition in the science world, it was not the first table of its kind. Some elements, such as Gold, sulphur, and carbon, have been known since ancient times. Alchemists started to explore and recognize new features in the 17th century.

Although Mendeleev’s table was almost there, it needed a significant improvement before it became a modern periodic table ( using the atomic number as the guiding concept for periods ). According to Henry, identical properties recur regularly when the elements are organized by increasing atomic number. Atomic quantities, not weights, determine the chemical properties component. The use of the atomic number as the grouping principle was first suggested by the British chemist Henry Moseley in 1913 .

Structure of the Periodic Table

The periodic table has various structures that make it complete. We have explained each structure below for you to understand the periodic table well.

The structures are:

he rows on the periodic table are called periods. All the elements in a period have the same number of atomic orbitals.

Each element in the top row ( the first period ) has an orbital for its electrons. All the elements in the second row have two orbitals for their electrons. As you move down the table, an orbital is attached to each row. There are no more than seven electron orbitals at this time. ( An orbital is a region where an electron resides in an atom ).

The diagram below shows period 2 of the periodic table:

LithiumBerylliumBoronCarbonNitrogenOxygenFluorine   Neon

The periodic table also has a particular name for its vertical columns. Each column is called a group. The elements of each group have the same number of electrons in the outer orbit. These outer electrons are also called valence electrons . They are electrons involved in chemical bonding with other elements. Each element in the first column ( group one ) has one electron in its outer shell. Each element in the second column ( group two ) has two electrons in the outer shell. As you keep counting the columns, you’ll know how many electrons there are in the outer shell.

There are exceptions to the order when looking at the transition elements.

The diagram below shows elements in group 2:

Beryllium
Magnesium
Calcium
 Strontium
 Barium
Radium

Specific parts of this table can be referred to as blocks considering the order in which the electron shells of the elements are filled. Elements are allocated to blocks in which orbitals their valence electrons or vacancies lie in. The s-block consists of the first two classes ( alkali metals and alkaline earth metals ) and hydrogen and helium. The p-block has the last six groups, which are 13 to 18 in the IUPAC group numbering ( 3A to 8A in the American group numbering ) and includes, among other elements, all metalloids. The d-block consists of groups 3 to 12 ( or 3B to 2B in American group numbering ) and includes all transition metals and the f-block comprises the Lanthanide and Actinide series.

Na

The periodic table elements are grouped into nine categories; six for metals and two for non-metals, and one for metalloids. Different writers can use various categorization schemes based on the properties of interest. Or you can put them in three classes; metals, non-metals, and metalloids.

Information Given In the Periodic Table

Chemistry is not limited to activities that happen in the laboratory. Everything on this planet is made up of atoms – the same elements seen on this table. Your first experience with the periodic table may be quite intimidating at first. In reality, most students find it quite confusing. With such a vast volume of information presented, students sometimes miss and mess up all the information on the table. However, with a clearer knowledge of the details provided to you in this table, it can be easier to tackle chemistry issues.

The following information is present on the periodic table:

Atomic number

First is the atomic number. The atomic number of the element is referred to as the number of protons in an atom. The number of protons describes what the element is and also specifies the chemical behavior of the element.

Atomic weight

There is also the atomic weight/mass. The basic atomic weight of an element is the total mass of the element in the atomic mass unit. Specific atoms often have an integer number of atomic mass units; moreover, the atomic mass on the periodic table is indicated as a decimal number. It is the average of the different isotopes of the element.  To get the average number of neutrons in an element, you subtract the atomic number from the atomic mass.

Atomic symbol

There is also the atomic symbol. An atomic symbol is an abbreviation that represents an element.

H for hydrogen . These symbols are used globally.

Periodic Trends

periodic table worksheet word document

Source of image: CK-12 Foundation

Periodic patterns are based on the Periodic Law, which specifies that when chemical elements are listed according to increasing atomic number, all of their properties undergo gradual changes, with elements with identical properties repeating at intervals.

We have explained the periodic trends for you in the paragraphs below:

Atomic radius

Atomic and ion radius are a measure of the size of a single atom or ion. While the atomic and ion radius is different from each other, they adopt the same general pattern.

Atomic radius is the atomic nucleus’s distance to the outermost stable orbital electron of an atom at equilibrium. Atomic radius grows when you go down a group due to the introduction of a new energy level. Covalent radius, Van der Waals radius, metallic radius, and ionic radius are the four types of atomic radius.

Ionization energy

Ionization energy is used to detach electrons from gaseous atoms or ions. It is different for electrons with different atomic or molecular orbits.

The ionization energy continues to increase as you go from left to right across a period or up a group in a table.

Electron affinity

Electron affinity is measured only for atoms and molecules in the gaseous state. Interactions with other atoms or molecules can modify their energy levels in solid or liquid states.

A molecule or atom with a more positive electron affinity value is called an electron acceptor; one with a less positive electron affinity is called an electron donor. The electron affinity of the elements usually increases across a period and often decreases down the group in the table.

Electronegativity

Electronegativity is the tendency of an atom to attract the shared pair of the electrons between the two atoms.

Trend-wise, when you go from left to right across a period in the table, electronegativity increases due to the greater attraction that the atoms receive as the nuclear charge increases. As you go down a group, electronegativity decreases due to an increase in the space between the nucleus and the valence electron layer, which lowers the attraction, making the atom less attractive to electrons or protons.

Metal character

The metallic character indicates the reactivity of a metal.

Metal character increases as you go down the groups. The decreasing attraction between the nucleus and the outermost electrons allows the outer electrons to be loosely bound and conduct heat and electricity. The increasing attraction between the nucleus and the outermost electrons decreases the nucleus’s metallic quality from left to right across the period.

Common Family Names

The word “ family ” is used to describe elements that share similar characteristics—not only in terms of visible behavior but also in terms of atomic structure.

Below is a periodic table showing the common family names:

Frequently Asked Questions

The discovery of individual elements was a required condition for the creation of a periodic table. While gold, silver, tin, copper, lead, and mercury have been known since ancient times, the first element discovered was phosphorous in 1649 by Hennig Brand.

With a boiling point of 3,422 degrees Celsius/6,192 degrees Fahrenheit, Tungsten has the highest melting point of all metals.

‘Au’ is derived from the word ‘Aurum’ even though the word gold is Anglo-Saxon.

Dmitri Mendeleev is widely and popularly known as the father of the periodic table.

You can use the periodic table’s organization to establish the relationship between the different properties of the elements and predict the chemical properties and behavior of undiscovered or newly synthesized elements. Russian chemist Dmitry Mendeleev published the first recognizable periodic table in 1869, created primarily to explain the then-known elements’ periodic patterns. He also predicted certain properties of unspecified elements that were supposed to fill the gaps in the table. Most of his predictions quickly proved accurate, resulting in gallium and germanium discoveries in 1875 and 1886, which verified his predictions.

Periodic table

The periodic table is a tabular arrangement of the chemical elements, ordered by their atomic number (number of protons), electron configurations, and recurring chemical properties. This ordering shows periodic trends, such as elements with similar behaviour in the same column. It also shows four rectangular blocks with some approximately similar chemical properties. In general, within one row (period) the elements are metals on the left, and non-metals on the right.

Color Periodic Table For Kids - 2017 Edition

A printable periodic table is an essential tool for students and chemists. The periodic table lists the elements in order of increasing atomic number and includes other key facts, like atomic weight. You can place it where you need it while solving problems, mark it up, and print a new one whenever you like. This is a collection of free printable periodic tables in PDF file or PNG image format to save, print, and use. Some tables are available as slides in Google Apps. These periodic tables use accurate data for name, atomic number , element symbol , atomic weight, and electron configuration , obtained from the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry or IUPAC.

What we’ve done is list the tables, along with links, so you can get detailed info about each one. The HD periodic tables make great screen savers or reference tables on mobile devices. They are sized to fit on a sheet of paper and you don’t need to worry about marking them up because you can always print more for working homework problems or performing lab calculations. The tables re-size cleanly, so you can view or print at any size or aspect ratio, from tiny to poster-sized.

To download a table, click the image to right-click and save or use the provided links for image or PDF downloads.

The Periodic Table of the Elements, in Pictures and Words

periodic table worksheet word document

This pictorial periodic table is colorful, fun, and packed with information. In addition to the element's name, symbol, and atomic number, each element box has a drawing of one of the element's main human uses or natural occurrences. The table is color-coded to show the chemical groupings. Small symbols pack in additional information: solid/liquid/gas, color of element, common in the human body, common in the earth's crust, magnetic metals, noble metals, radioactive, and rare or never found in nature. It does not overload kids with a lot of detailed numbers, like atomic weights and valence numbers.

Note: Elements in Pictures and Elements in Words are a set. Either may stand alone, but they work best together.

See also: Interactive Periodic Table of the Elements, in Pictures and Words . This contains most of the same information on an interactive web page.

See also: Links to translations in other languages.

periodic table worksheet word document

This textual periodic table is packed with even more information. In addition to the element's name, symbol, and atomic number, each element box contains a textual description of the element's physical properties and a list of several of its human uses and/or natural occurrences. The table is color-coded to show the chemical groups, and each group is described in a panel of the same color. Other info panels describe atomic structure, chemical bonding, and radioactivity. It does not overload kids with a lot of detailed numbers, but it does provide some simple rules-of-thumb about atomic weights and valence numbers.

See also: The Elements — Descriptions, Uses and Occurrences . This contains most of the same information, but in a less graphical, more textual html format. It also contains handy links to search for more info about each use.

periodic table worksheet word document

This has both Elements in Pictures and Elements in Words combined on a single page.

periodic table worksheet word document

This is exactly the same as Elements in Pictures above, but with less information. The fine print — the legend boxes and the small symbols — have been removed. Use this if you want a cleaner image with less visual clutter, or you want less information, or you want to print smaller or at lower resolution.

Elements cards

Print-your-own elements cards. Use these however you want. It's fun to simply lay them out to make the whole periodic table. You can use them as flash cards to help you memorize the facts on the front and back of each card. If you want to play it as a game, you can invent your own game rules.

Print double-sided on card stock. Cut out cards with paper cutter or scissors. Nine cards per sheet. There's a card for every element, with a picture on the front and words on the back. Also included are key cards (symbol key and color key), info cards (atom info and bonding info), and group info cards. The zip file also includes a template for making a card box. It also includes printing instructions.

Sorry, card decks are not for sale at the Wlonk Shop . You need to print them yourself. See Links for cards at other shops.

Element sheet

Print each element on a separate sheet. You can make a very large periodic table to cover a large wall. Or you can use the sheets separately, for example, each student chooses one element.

Print single-sided. Elements 1-98 have pictures. Also included are key sheets (symbol key and color key), info sheets (atom info and bonding info), and group info sheets.

Sorry, elements sheets are not for sale at the Wlonk Shop . You need to print them yourself.

Element worksheet

Printable student worksheet. Print one or many per student. This worksheet has spaces for the student to write the element's symbol, name, atomic number, description, uses and/or occurrences, and a space to draw a picture.

Are you homeschooling? This activity can occupy your student for one or many days. If you want a big activity, print out 98 of these worksheets, and assign your student to research every element from 1 to 98 (the elements with uses) and fill out a worksheet for each element, one or a few elements per day. This not just busywork; knowing some facts about each element is useful basic knowledge for many careers: engineering, manufacturing, biology, medicine, ecology, agriculture, geology, physics, and, of course, chemistry!

periodic table worksheet word document

Students will have fun builiding paper models of all these alternative periodic tables. Then they can discuss how the models are different and yet the same.

This left-step periodic table is the basis for the spiral, cone, and cylinder models.

periodic table worksheet word document

This left-step table is a slightly modified version of the left-step table by Charles Janet (1928). This compact version places hydrogen, helium, lithium, and beryllium all in a single row.

Note that hydrogen is unique — it may be grouped with the alkali metals (like lithium) because it has one electron available to donate, grouped with the halogens (like fluorine) because gaining one electron will fill its valence shell, or it may be put in a group of its own.

In this periodic table, the elements are arranged in a single flat spiral (not concentric circles).

periodic table worksheet word document

In this model, the elements are arranged in a single conical spiral (not stacked rings).

periodic table worksheet word document

The paper model above is very easy to make. The more elaborate paper-and-plastic model below is more difficult to make.

periodic table worksheet word document

In this model, the elements are arranged in a single cylindrical helix (not stacked rings).

Atomic Orbitals (Color)

Atomic Orbitals

This color-coded chart shows what atoms look like. This chart shows all the fundamental atomic electron orbitals as electron probability density distributions (fuzzy clouds), which is close as you can get to visualizing what an atom really looks like. The orbitals are labeled. It describes other ways to visualize atoms, namely, electron orbits (like planets) and surfaces of constant probability (bulgy blobs). It has a small periodic table showing in which order the electron shells are filled.

Atomic Orbitals (Black)

Atomic Orbitals (Black)

This white-on-black chart shows what atoms look like. This chart shows all the fundamental atomic electron orbitals as electron probability density distributions (fuzzy clouds), which is as close as you can get to visualizing what an atom really looks like. The orbitals are labeled. This elegant chart has little visual clutter.

See other web sites for 3D visualizations. See Links for 3D products.

Particles (Standard Model)

Particles (Standard Model)

This chart shows what the universe is made of. This chart shows all the elementary particles in the standard model (SM) of particle physics, and many non-elementary particles too. It starts with the basics: an atom contains a nucleus of protons and neutrons, which are made of quarks. The chart organizes all the important particles and classes of particles: elementary fermions (quarks, leptons, electrons, neutrinos), elementary bosons (gluons, photons, W and Z bosons, Higgs, and predicted gravitons), composite particles (hadrons, baryons, protons, neutrons, mesons), anti-particles. This chart does not show the many predicted supersymmetry particles.

Particles (Standard Model + Supersymmetry)

periodic table worksheet word document

This chart shows what the universe is made of. This chart shows all the elementary particles in the standard model (SM) of particle physics, plus the many predicted supersymmetry (SUSY) particles. Many physicists think supersymmetry is likely to exist, and many physicists do not.

Note: In the coming years, physicists may discover new particles or significantly revise the standard model of particle physics, due to new experimental results from colliders, such as the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), and new observations from telescopes.

I'm finally getting around to

I'm finally getting around to uploading my image files for wallet sized periodic tables.  I took the word document above and shrunk the fonts considerably, exported to pdf, then shrunk again in my graphics software (I used GIMP, which is a freeware program similar to photoshop).  The quality came out fantastic.  I've attached both a pdf and jpg file of the periodic table we used.

This is a table that I

Shaun! Thank you so much for

Shaun! Thank you so much for the really well-done Periodic Table. Most of all, I love that you made it using tables that could be so easily manipulated to make small changes/additions/subtractions. It's wonderful.

Specifically... I'm in the camp of Lutetium being the first element in the d-block, 6th period. I really wanted one, but since I suspect I'm in the minority, it's been hard to find something without doing it all myself. You totally rock!

Hi All,Bob LeSuer has a bunch

Bob LeSuer has a bunch of resources like this as he has created a series of 3D-printed periodic tables and also a voice-activated periodic table!

https://bobthechemist.com/the-periodic-table/

I wonder if anyone has a good

I wonder if anyone has a good periodic table for a LaTeX document (besides an image).  I am migrating to LaTeX since Word removed the equation editor I depended on for so much.....  (LaTeX has some fantastic features that allow chemical structures and other things-- Perhaps this could be a forum?)

My Word periodic tables are just like all the others, but I'll include them anyway.
