What Is Social Studies?

Social studies is a field of study that seeks to unify the diverse subjects of history, politics, economics, sociology, geography and anthropology, ultimately aiming toward a comprehensive understanding of society. It is often taught to young students as a preparation for college or careers.
The aim of social studies is to promote civic competence or a practical understanding of how to properly and effectively participate in public life. It is often discussed in terms of sustaining and developing democracy and global citizenship.
Topics covered by a social studies curriculum might include immigration, ancient civilizations, geography, the economy and foreign policy.
