Telstra Business Upfront Internet Plans

Information about the service, telstra smart modem.

If you have a Telstra Smart Modem it has backup from our 4G mobile network. You can use the 4G backup service in two scenarios - to get online until your broadband service is connected and when there’s a detected network upgrade or outage. Mobile backup is available to premises in 4G coverage areas. Check coverage at  telstra.com/coverage . We do not support modems not supplied by Telstra. If you choose to use your own modem Telstra will not be able troubleshoot or conduct testing, if you have a connection issue, fault or speed issue you will be required to report these issues to Telstra.

Telstra Internet Optimiser

Included as an optional feature at no charge while you remain on an eligible plan with a compatible modem. For details, visit  telstra.com.au/internet/internet-optimiser

If you want your name, address or phone number included in the White Pages, you can ask for a listed number.

Service availability

The type of service offered may need further qualification checks to determine what’s available at your location. It is not currently available on Fixed Wireless.

Access Technology

We may change the technology that we use to provide your service from time to time. You must provide all reasonable assistance to implement the change. We will let you know before we make this kind of change unless the change will benefit you or have a neutral impact on you and we do not require your assistance to implement the change. Once your nbn service has been activated on the new FTTP infrastructure, your service cannot be changed back to your previous access technology.

Broadband Speeds

Broadband speeds vary due to a number of factors, including:

  • Type of technology available at your address
  • Network capacity
  • Set up at your premises
  • Device connection (Wi-Fi vs Ethernet cable)
  • The number of users online

A broadband service can never go faster than the maximum line speed available at your premises, so for FTTN/B/C customers we will confirm your actual speeds after connection. Typical nbn Fixed Wireless speeds may be lower than other nbn access types.

Your address

We have made several attempts to initiate the process of establishing an nbn  network connection to your building, however we have been unsuccessful in our engagement with the building’s authorised representative. Consequently, nbn does not currently plan to install a network connection to your building, unless we receive a request from the Owners’ Corporation.

If you currently use existing fixed line phone or internet services there are a number of implications to be aware of:

  • Critical copper services such as emergency lift phones and monitored fire alarm systems may be at risk of disconnection.*
  • Occupiers may not be able to continue to access other critical services connected to the existing Fixed Line networks such as medical alarms and emergency call systems, monitored security alarms and fax machines. ^
  • Existing fixed line services will be disconnected at a future date and occupiers will not be able to make phone calls or access the internet over the Fixed Line network unless the nbn  supplied equipment is installed at the property. The disconnection of existing Fixed Line services will not affect occupier's ability to access phone and internet services over mobile networks.
  • Future requests for an nbn  network connection will result in costs payable by the Owners Corporation and/or owners/occupiers.

However, if your phone and internet services are already provided via another fibre network, they will continue to operate as normal unless your provider advises otherwise.

nbn strongly recommends that you contact your current provider of phone and internet services, or visit www.nbn.com.au/switchoff for more information about whether your services will be impacted by the rollout of the nbn  network. #

Please do not hesitate to contact us should you decide to request an installation in the future.

*Please ask your Owners Corporation to contact the lift and alarm service providers for your building. This will help minimise a break in service when the existing network is switched off. Existing fire and lift services registered with nbn may be exempt from immediate disconnection. Please visit www.nbn.com.au/fireandlift for information on registering these services.

^ nbn is developing a list of networks that nbn reasonably understands will continue to operate after the nbn rollout has been completed based on information provided by alternative network owners/operators. For more information, please visit www.nbn.com.au/switchoff or contact us .

Upgrades to get you future ready, today

Regional Australians are using more data than ever, with internet usage to increase over the next 10 years. We’re unleashing faster and more reliable nbn speeds on our Fixed Wireless network. We’ve boosted speeds on our most popular plan - Fixed Wireless Plus. Soon, we’ll also be introducing two new higher speed plans in eligible upgraded locations, which will be the fastest wholesale speeds we’ve ever offered on our Fixed Wireless network.

Things you need to know

Contact your preferred fixed wireless provider.

Fixed Wireless is available from a range of providers. They can advise on your plan options, whether you’ll need any new devices and help book an installation appointment with an  nbn technician.

Installation process

You may need to be home for an appointment with the nbn technician, who will test and confirm signal strength before installing the necessary Fixed Wireless equipment. +

If you're currently connected to a Satellite service, there may be additional steps for you to follow.

Upgrade works are already underway

Our plan includes three key phases:

Fixed Wireless is more widely available to eligible homes and businesses currently on Satellite services, with more locations to become eligible in the future. Eligible locations can order a plan by contacting a Fixed Wireless provider.

From late 2023

Faster download speeds during the busy period in upgraded areas. There’s nothing you’ll need to do to access the enhancements to the network if you’re connected to a Fixed Wireless plan.

From mid 2024

Faster speeds and a better connection available on Fixed Wireless Plus. Higher speed plans in upgraded areas through participating providers.

Find out what's happening in your area by selecting your state or territory below

Please note, not all towers will be upgraded at the same time. This means only eligible locations, within proximity of the upgraded towers will be able to access the enhanced Fixed Wireless network as we complete works in your area.

How is nbn delivering these upgrades to the Fixed Wireless network?

We're optimising the Fixed Wireless network, including installing the next generation 4G and 5G equipment. This new technology is designed to deliver more reach (by extending the range of the towers from 14km to up to 29kms where possible) and more speed to regional and remote Australia. nbn will be amongst the first in the world to deploy the 5G technology at this scale for a dedicated Fixed Wireless network.

We’re evolving the network by also working with local governments and councils to install new Fixed Wireless towers in selected areas.

How are Satellite premises selected to be upgraded to Fixed Wireless?

The Satellite locations across Australia that will become eligible to connect to Fixed Wireless as part of the upgrades have been selected based on their proximity to the existing Fixed Wireless towers and the strength of wireless signal that can be expected at the location. Find out what's happening in your area by selecting your state or territory below.

Will I experience disruption to my service during the upgrade works?

If you’re currently connected to a Fixed Wireless plan, you’ll generally be able to continue using your service as usual during the upgrade works.

However, you may experience a reduction in service and outages as we roll out the upgrades in your area over several weeks. We’ll notify your provider of any outages ahead of time, so they can keep you informed.

When will the new higher speed plans become available?

nbn has recently announced further proposed speed enhancements to its overall nbn Fixed Wireless network upgrade plan. Subject to industry consultation, nbn proposes to make the following higher speeds available:

The existing nbn Fixed Wireless Plus plan, available from nbn providers, is planned to be enhanced from wholesale speeds of up to 75/10Mbps, to deliver wholesale speeds up to 100/20Mbps. Δ* nbn is providing this speed uplift on nbn Fixed Wireless Plus plans at no additional cost to providers. nbn intends for the Fixed Wireless Plus speed plan to become available to order from nbn providers from early-2024 and anticipates it will be available across the nbn Fixed Wireless footprint . *

nbn Fixed Wireless Home Fast is planned to offer wholesale download speeds between 200-250 (uplifted from a previous intended range of 100-130Mbps wholesale download speeds) and wholesale upload speeds between 8-20 Mbps. Δ* nbn intends for this higher speed plan to become available to order from nbn providers from mid-2024. We anticipate this speed tier will be available to up to 90% of the nbn Fixed Wireless Coverage Area by December 2024. *

nbn Fixed Wireless Superfast is planned to offer wholesale download speeds of 400Mbps (uplifted from a previous intended range of 200-325Mbps wholesale download speed) and wholesale upload speeds between 10-40 Mbps Δ *. nbn intends for this higher speed plan to become available to order from nbn providers from mid-2024. We anticipate this speed tier will be available to up to 80% of the nbn Fixed Wireless Coverage Area by December 2024.

You can access our  cookie notice  for more information.  nbn  uses service providers who may be located outside of Australia to carry out our work.  nbn ’s  Privacy Policy  sets out how we handle your personal information, how you can access or correct your personal information, or make a complaint about  nbn ’s handling of your personal information and how we will deal with your complaint.

Important notes

Faster download speeds mean less buffering where the buffering was caused by slow download speeds over the nbn Fixed Wireless network. Please note that the amount of buffering you experience may also be affected by other factors outside of nbn’s control (like your Wi-Fi and other equipment configuration, chosen broadband plan, how your provider designs its network, or the video streaming and other content providers’ network).

Your experience, including the speeds actually achieved over the nbn network, depends on the configuration over which services are delivered to your premises, whether you are using the internet during the busy period, and some factors outside of nbn’s control (like your equipment quality, software, chosen broadband plan or how your provider designs its network). Speeds may also be impacted by the number of concurrent users on the nbn Fixed Wireless network, including during busy periods.

If the nbn technician determines after testing that your premises does not have sufficient signal strength, then the necessary equipment will not be installed, and you will not be able to access the nbn Fixed Wireless network.

Conditions, eligibility criteria and costs will apply – please speak with your preferred provider. Eligibility criteria includes among other things, being designated by nbn as a simple premises and placing an order for an nbn powered plan based on an eligible wholesale speed tier. Additional costs may apply to providers, who may choose to pass this charge onto their customers.

Not all providers offer plans based on the full range of wholesale speed tiers. Talk to your preferred provider for more information about availability and the right retail solution for your needs.

These are nbn wholesale speed tiers which nbn provides to retail phone and internet providers.  Attainable wholesale speeds are subject to the rollout of network upgrades and some premises will require nbn to complete upgrades to the equipment at the premises.

Telstra NBN review

We assess whether australia’s biggest nbn provider is worth the cost of entry.

Telstra logo

TechRadar Verdict

Telstra’s plans are far above the average price in each speed tier, but what you get in terms of top speeds and entertainment options is first class. Its NBN 250 plan is arguably the telco’s most competitive, and Telstra is currently the only provider who offers a full 250Mbps typical evening speed in this tier, making it a great choice for busy households and power users.

Maxed-out evening speeds in all but NBN 1000

Entertainment add-ons galore

Lots of support options

NBN 25 and 50 plans are expensive compared to competition

Competitors offer top speeds in NBN 50 and 100 for less

Why you can trust TechRadar We spend hours testing every product or service we review, so you can be sure you’re buying the best. Find out more about how we test.

Telstra is the largest telco in Australia, and it generally offers a high-quality service with dependable speeds… for a price. Yes, there’s no getting around the fact that Telstra has some of the most expensive NBN plans in Australia, with all the company’s plan prices sitting above average in their given tiers.

But what Telstra offers in return are fast download speeds, plenty of perks and optional add-ons. Aside from its gigabit plan, each of Telstra’s NBN plans offer the maximum download speed available at all times in their respective tiers, and at the time of writing, it is the only provider to offer a typical evening speed of 250Mbps on its NBN 250 plan . It also has the fastest NBN 1000 plan on the table.

While Telstra’s NBN plans aren’t especially competitive in terms of price, they’re hard to beat in terms of inclusions. All of its NBN plans now come with the Telstra Smart Modem 3, which Telstra says uses Wi-Fi 6 to deliver strong speeds to all corners of your home.

Our Telstra NBN review is going to outline the costs, performance, optional extras and customer feedback to help you choose whether to sign up to Telstra as your NBN provider . We’ll also keep you up to date with any deals currently available from the telco.

Noteworthy Telstra NBN deals

  • NBN 50 : save AU$10p/m for first 6 months (then AU$95p/m ongoing)
  • NBN 100 : save AU$10p/m for first 6 months (then AU$110p/m ongoing)
  • NBN 250 : save AU$20p/m for first 6 months (then AU$140p/m ongoing)

Telstra NBN pricing: is Telstra good value?

  • NBN 25: AU$80p/m (average NBN 25 cost is AU$66.57)
  • NBN 50: AU$95p/m (average NBN 50 cost is AU$75.19)
  • NBN 100: AU$110p/m (average NBN 100 cost is AU$92.03)
  • NBN 250: AU$140p/m (average NBN 250 cost is AU$121.18)
  • NBN 1000: AU$180p/m (average NBN 1000 cost is AU$145.77)

As you can see indicated above, Telstra’s NBN plans cost above the average in comparison to other providers in every respective speed tier. In most cases, Telstra is also the most expensive option no matter what speed tier you choose.

It’s fair to say that Telstra isn’t a good choice if you’re looking for a cheap NBN plan , but if your top priority is fast, reliable speed, then we’d argue that Telstra’s NBN plans are great value.

That’s partly because its NBN 25, NBN 50, NBN 100 and NBN 250 plans all report maxed-out evening speeds, and as mentioned above, Telstra is the only provider which can make that claim for its NBN 250 plan. Telstra’s NBN 1000 plan quotes a typical download speed of 700Mbps during the evening hours, a figure that far exceeds its small competition in this tier. Aussie Broadband and Origin are closest to catching up, both with a typical evening speed of 600Mbps.

Telstra’s also a good value option if you’re looking for a plan that comes with included benefits or optional add-ons. For example, all plans come with the Telstra Smart Modem 3, which is Wi-Fi 6 enabled and comes with 4G backup.

You’ll also get a two-month subscription to Binge , a three-month subscription to Apple TV Plus and a four-month subscription to Spotify Premium – all for free when you first sign up. If you want a home phone landline, that’s also included at no extra cost. There’s also Telstra’s rewards program, where you can earn points to redeem on devices at the Rewards Store.

If you’re considering signing up for a Telstra NBN plan, try to do so while there’s a discount available. You can sometimes score Telstra’s fastest NBN plans for just one dollar, though that rock-bottom price is typically only available for your first month on the service.

The discount tends to include Telstra’s NBN 50, NBN 100 and NBN 250 plans, and you can save as much as AU$139 in this deal. While the upfront saving is massive in comparison to other internet deals on the market, you’ll be paying above the average cost once the first month discount ends.

All Telstra NBN plans compared

Performance and typical evening speeds.

  • Maxed-out typical evening speeds on NBN 25, 50, 100 and 250 plans
  • Competitors offer top speeds in NBN 25, 50 and 100 for less
  • ACCC reporting shows fairly low rate of outages

Telstra is one of the few providers to offer a maximum typical evening speed on most of its plans. As mentioned above, the telco maxes-out its download speed in the NBN 25, NBN 50, NBN 100 and NBN 250 tiers (it does this by 'overprovisioning' – or in layman’s terms, providing more bandwidth than its customers generally require). With its NBN 1000 plan reporting download speeds of 700Mbps in the evening hours, it’s the telco closest to reaching the 1000Mbps mark.

These reported figures are also well-supported by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission’s (ACCC) broadband reporting , with its December 2022 report finding the telco came exceptionally close to delivering its promised download speed 100% of the time.

The ACCC found that the Telstra customers participating in the study were able to reach 99.8% of their plan’s rated speeds on average during the busy evening hours of 7pm to 11pm. Across all hours, the Telstra households exceeded the advertised speeds by 1.2% – both are excellent results for an NBN provider which is promising maxed-out download speeds.

The report also found that Telstra was marginally beat-out by Launtel , Exetel and Optus in average download speed during the busy hours. Exetel and Optus both offer top speeds on their NBN 50 and NBN 100 plans, and manage to do so for a decent amount less than Telstra. With this in mind, it’s worth considering whether Telstra’s price is justified for you.

A bar graph showing the average download speed by internet service provider

The ACCC also looks at NBN outages , and its December 2022 report found that its pool of volunteers with a Telstra connection had a fairly low rate of outages, with one occurring about every 4.2 days on average. By comparison, the average for all telcos monitored was around every 3.4 days during the testing period.

While Telstra’s customers experienced an outage less frequently, the ACCC’s results show that when they occurred, they had a high instance of lasting 10 minutes or more (these longer outages accounted for about 40% of Telstra’s total).

Figures around outages can fluctuate over time, but we’d also note that this figure is consistent with the ACCC’s previous August 2022 finding. For more context, most other providers' proportion of 10 minute-plus outages is much lower – around 10-20% of total.

Netflix’s own ISP Speed Index measures the performance of the streaming service across various internet providers, and current figures show that most ISPs handle the service the same. Telstra’s currently on par with Optus , TPG and others, and its performance has remained steady since at least August 2022, as has Optus’.

Customer support

  • Telstra NBN technical support: 13 22 00
  • Telstra customer service: 13 22 00

Telstra has plenty of support options for its customers. Its website has extensive support pages for troubleshooting issues on your own, but you can also speak to someone over the phone, through online chat , or by visiting a Telstra store. If you prefer getting assistance face-to-face, there’s few other telcos that can offer this kind of help.

You can call Telstra on 13 22 00 for any inquiry, and lines for setup and technical support are open Monday to Friday from 7am to 11pm AEST. Alternatively, you can speak to a support agent using Telstra’s online chat (though you’ll first be connected to a bot to try and answer your query, if it’s unsuccessful, you’ll be put through to a real human).

If you’re already a Telstra customer, your text-based queries will be best served by the My Telstra app, which is available for iOS and Android . This will connect you to a Telstra support agent right away, and you don’t have to stay in the app while you wait for a reply – their response will just come through like any other notification.

Telstra also offers specific support for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander customers with a dedicated phone line. It can be reached on 1800 444 403 from Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm. Multilingual services are available too – you can call 1800 241 600 for a free translation and interpretation service, which is only available to non-English speaking customers. Telstra also lists stores in your state with multilingual services if you’d prefer to speak in person.

When it comes to customer satisfaction, Telstra has not attracted positive ratings from either Product Review or Trustpilot , with both sites showing below two stars for the telco. It’s not uncommon for large NBN providers such as Telstra to receive mostly negative feedback from review aggregating sites, so take this feedback with a grain of salt.

Optional extras and bundle deals

  • Telstra Smart Modem 3 included in all plans
  • Wi-Fi boosters and gaming optimisations available
  • Telstra TV box, Foxtel packs and Xbox All Access can be added

Aside from its high-performing service, Telstra’s choice of perks and optional added extras is a compelling reason for choosing the telco over others. All Telstra customers now receive the Telstra Smart Modem 3 when signing up, which is Wi-Fi 6 enabled, and comes with 4G backup if you lose your NBN connection. If you leave Telstra within 24 months, we like that you can return the modem or pay a AU$200 no-return fee – no other exit fees apply.

Telstra can also guarantee you wall-to-wall Wi-Fi coverage at home, though this comes at an additional cost. For AU$12 a month over 24 months, or AU$288 upfront, you can get the Telstra Smart Wi-Fi Booster added to your plan to fill those Wi-Fi black spots. The Wi-Fi extender will benefit those who live in larger, double brick or multi-story homes, as they’re the homes most likely to experience spotty Wi-Fi.

Internet Optimiser is another neat feature that’s now included with all Telstra NBN plans at no extra cost. You can set it up through the My Telstra app, and from there, you can prioritise online traffic on your home network. This feature is good for gamers who want to reduce lag spikes, or anyone who wants to control which devices get the most bandwidth.

A graphic comparing Telstra's Wi-Fi coverage in the layout of a large home, compared to Aussie Broadband's smaller coverage

If you’d like a home phone line included in your plan, Telstra will sort you out with a landline at no extra cost, with unlimited calls to standard mobiles and landlines in Australia all included. This is a pretty great deal in comparison to what’s on offer from the select number of providers who still offer customers a landline – TPG, for example, will charge you at least AU$10 a month if you want to use your landline. At present, there’s no option to bundle together your Telstra NBN plan with a Telstra mobile plan .

Telstra customers have access to some pretty great entertainment add-ons too. You’ll get a few free streaming subscriptions when you first sign up with Telstra, including a two months of Binge , three months of Apple TV Plus and four months of Spotify Premium – all for nothing.

You can also add a Telstra TV box to your chosen NBN plan for an extra AU$9 a month, or AU$216 outright. Telstra TV lets you pause and rewind live TV, and includes apps for Netflix, Stan, Kayo, Binge and Disney Plus, but note you’ll still need a subscription to watch these services. We can’t see much benefit in bolting on the Telstra TV service if you already own a smart TV, though.

There’s stacks more entertainment options available through Telstra’s partnership with Foxtel , from packs that include over 50 channels to more niche options, such as Foxtel Sports HD or Foxtel Movies HD packs. You can often snag a discount for your first 12 months on these services through Telstra as well.

Finally, Telstra has not forgotten about the gamers. You’re able to bundle in 24 months of Xbox All Access with your NBN plan , at an extra cost of AU$33 a month for an Xbox Series S console, or AU$46 a month for an Xbox Series X console.

The Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S appearing on Telstra's website

Additional fees

  • No setup or delivery fee
  • No cancellation fee if you leave Telstra
  • Return modem or pay AU$200 no-return fee if leaving before 24 months

As mentioned, all Telstra NBN plans come with a modem included, and you won’t have to pay for it if you stay with the telco for more than 24 months. If you leave within two years, you have the option of returning the modem or paying a AU$200 no-return fee.

All of the extras that are highlighted above come at an additional cost, and you’ll be able to tack them onto your plan of choice during sign up. These add-ons can be cancelled at any time, but keep in mind that some entertainment extras such as Xbox All Access (which comes with a console) will need to be paid off in full if you cancel within 24 months.

Since all of Telstra’s plans come in a no lock-in contract, no other exit fees apply and you can cancel the service at any time.

Telstra NBN FAQ

Can i get telstra nbn.

Telstra offers plans in almost every speed tier, with NBN 25 and above available. If you want to sign up for an NBN 250 or NBN 1000 plan, you’ll need to have a fibre-to-the-premise (FTTP) or hybrid fibre coaxial (HFC) connection – this is the case across all providers. If you’re unsure of what NBN connection you have, you can check your address on Telstra’s website.

How can I check if Telstra NBN is down?

If you’re experiencing a Telstra NBN outage, you’ll first want to figure out if it’s just you, or if the internet is down for everyone in your area. We’d recommend visiting Telstra’s outage page first, and if no issues have been reported, you can check NBN Co’s website for wider network issues .

If your internet is down, you’ll need to check these pages using your phone, or another device with its own internet connection. If Telstra’s own website is down, we’d recommend checking the independent site Down Detector . If you find you’re having connection issues that can’t be attributed to a known outage, call Telstra’s NBN technical support on 13 22 00.

For further help, we also have a dedicated guide to NBN outages .

Fixed wireless NBN plans

If you live in rural or regional australia, fixed wireless nbn can be one of the best ways to access faster internet..

What is fixed wireless NBN?

What nbn fixed wireless speeds can you get, which providers offer nbn fixed wireless plans, what is the difference between fibre and fixed wireless nbn, is fixed wireless nbn reliable, are there any alternatives to fixed wireless nbn, frequently asked questions.

Why compare internet plans with Finder?

We don't charge extra. Prices shown on Finder are the same as those you get directly from internet providers.

We compare almost every major internet provider in Australia, all in one place.

Our team is dedicated to monitoring internet plan prices and keeping deals updated daily.

Fixed wireless NBN is an internet connection that provides connection through radio signals in the air, rather than fibre optic cables. These signals are transmitted from a tower in your area to an antenna installed on your roof.

While fixed-line NBN comes with 6 speed tiers to choose from, there are only 3 available for fixed wireless NBN.

Besides the 2 basic, entry level speed tiers, there is also a unique speed tier for this connection type called Fixed Wireless Plus. This speed tier offers up to 75Mbps download speeds.

The most commonly available speed tiers for NBN fixed wireless plans are:

  • NBN 12 - 12Mbps maximum download speed, 1Mbps maximum upload speed
  • NBN 25 - 25Mbps maximum download speed, 5Mbps maximum upload speed
  • NBN 75 - 75Mbps maximum download speed, 10Mbps maximum upload speed
  • Keep in mind that there are some providers that offer higher speeds of 100-500Mbps, but it's a very small number and availability is limited, so you'll need to check your address with them before signing up.

But what about the actual typical evening speeds on fixed wireless?

The quality and maximum speed of fixed wireless NBN is often more variable than fixed-line connections. The typical evening speed of your fixed wireless connection may be affected by:

  • The distance of your premises to the fixed wireless tower
  • Whether there is a clear line of sight from the premises to the tower
  • Weather conditions such as extreme heat or heavy rain
  • Network congestion (the number of households connected to the same tower and the amount of usage from these households)

In particular, fixed wireless connections are affected by network congestion when you have lots of people online at the same time.

In its April 2023 Measuring Broadband Performance report, the ACCC found fixed wireless connections would only achieve 84.7% of advertised download plan speeds during peak hours (usually 7pm-11pm).

This was compared to NBN fixed-line services which averaged 99.7% of plan speed during the same hours.

There is currently an NBN fixed wireless upgrade program taking place, likely to be finished by the end of 2024. It's expected there will be new speed tiers available, with users being able to access download speeds of 100-130Mbps or even 200-325Mbps.

On Finder, we compare NBN fixed wireless plans from over 20 internet providers in Australia. Always check your address on the provider's website to see if its plans are available in your area.

There are a number of differences between fibre or fixed-line NBN and fixed wireless NBN:

It depends on what you're comparing it to. As far as internet connections go, the most reliable NBN connection you can get is a fibre-optic connection, otherwise known as a fixed-line NBN connection.

In terms of a wireless internet connection, NBN fixed wireless is more reliable than mobile wireless.

This is because your antenna is installed to optimise signal exchange between itself and the tower, which is unlike a mobile wireless service where speeds can be affected by the number of people moving into and out of the area.

Fixed wireless NBN plans may not be as fast as their fixed-line counterparts but you might find it a more reliable option for your household compared to home wireless broadband or mobile broadband. Just make sure to pick a plan that meets your budget and speed requirements.

Mariam Gabaji Utilities editor

Your address will determine which NBN connection type you're eligible for. For some households, fixed wireless might be the only option for connecting to the NBN.

If you're unhappy with the prospect of signing up to a fixed wireless plan, there are other broadband alternatives to consider:

  • Sign up to Elon Musk's Starlink service if you're happy to pay upfront costs of $1,000+ but in return, get speeds between 100-200Mbps.
  • Compare home wireless broadband or mobile broadband, which uses the mobile network get you online.

What equipment do I need for NBN fixed wireless?

For a standard NBN fixed wireless installation, you will need:

  • An NBN outdoor antenna
  • An NBN connection box
  • A connecting cable from the outdoor antenna to the connection box
  • A compatible router
  • An ethernet cable to connect the connection box to the router

The outdoor antenna and connection box will be provided by and set up by an NBN installer. The outdoor antenna is mounted externally, usually on the roof.

An NBN connection box is normally installed on an inside wall of your premises, and it requires power to operate. Expect a small hole to be drilled through the wall of your premises so the outdoor antenna can be connected via cable to the connection box.

If you don't already have a router to connect to the connection box, your internet service provider can help supply one to you, most likely at a cost.

  • Good to know: As the NBN connection box requires power to operate, during a power outage your NBN fixed wireless connection won't work.

What is the fastest fixed wireless NBN?

According to the list of fixed wireless NBN providers in Finder's database, Superloop offers the fastest speeds of up to 500Mbps.

Keep in mind, this type of plan is only available at selected premises. Always check with the provider or enter your address on its website to see if you're able to sign up.

For the most part, the fastest speeds most widely available via fixed wireless NBN are around 50-75Mbps.

Does Telstra offer fixed wireless plans?

Yes, Telstra offers 2 NBN fixed wireless plans, an NBN 25 plan for $80 a month and an NBN 75 plan for $95 a month.

Does Optus sell fixed wireless NBN?

No, Optus does not offer fixed wireless NBN.

NBN business vs residential plans: What’s the difference?

A breakdown of the differences between NBN business plans and NBN residential plans.

Nathan Lawrence

At first glance, there’s not a whole lot of difference between NBN plans aimed at residential users and business users. After all, the vast majority of plans on both sides are based on the same NBN speed tiers, ranging from the bare-bones NBN 12 through to the incredibly speedy NBN 1000 plans.

Dig a little deeper, though, and there are some key differences with big implications, most of which are worth highlighting for smaller businesses considering whether they should opt for a cheaper residential plan or pay extra for some of the unique business perks.

NBN business vs residential plans

For starters, let’s have a look at some examples of popular NBN plans, some of which regularly appear on our best NBN plans list. Below is a daily updating list of popular residential NBN plans across a range of speeds and providers.

And for comparison, below is a daily updating list of popular business NBN plans across a variety of providers and speeds.

NBN business vs residential plan prices

What you may notice when glancing at the residential and business plans in the lists above is the differences in price. For the NBN plans in our database, residential plans tend to be cheaper and the trend is for a handful of providers to regularly offer six months of discounted pricing. While there are certain NBN business plans with discounts, there’s a noticeable monthly price difference between the cheapest residential plans and the most cost-effective business plans.

So, what exactly do business NBN customers get for the extra cost?

In most cases, an eligible residential user can apply for any NBN plan that’s supported by the NBN technology that connects their home. If an NBN provider offers plans in your area, the chances are good you can sign up for one. When it comes to business NBN plans, though, certain providers have eligibility checkers that require additional information before you can sign up for a plan.

NBN business vs residential speeds

Photograph of smartphone using internet speed test

Business NBN plans tend to have a guaranteed amount of bandwidth, which means, traditionally, they’ve had access to faster speeds. These days, though, NBN residential plans have continually improving self-reported download speeds, which are trending towards parity between maximum speed and advertised speed for metro plans up to NBN 100.

Because of this, business NBN plans are less impressive in comparison than they used to be, even if the trend is towards parity between advertised speeds and maximum speeds, particularly for plans up to NBN 100. Where business NBN impresses more is when it comes to extra upload allowances. For instance, Aussie Broadband offers an NBN 25/10 plan (compared to the typical 25/5 offering) and an NBN 100/40 plan (more commonly 100/20 for residential users).

Aussie Broadband also offers even better upload potential for its fastest plans: 250/100 (vs 250/25), 500/200 (no residential comparison) and 1000/400 (vs 1000/50). While the trend with residential plans is to treat upload bandwidth as a distant afterthought to download speeds, the ability to quickly share large files and seamlessly use bandwidth-intensive services across multiple users is important to certain businesses, hence the disparity.

Providers that sell residential plans on fixed-line NBN technologies in metro areas are required to self-report typical evening download speeds. These are the download speeds during the nightly busy period, between 7:00pm and 11:00pm. For businesses, provider self-reported speeds are advertised in terms of the speeds you can expect between business hours, 9:00am to 5:00pm on weekdays.

NBN business vs residential IP addresses

If you’re a residential NBN user, there’s a good chance your provider has assigned you a dynamic IP address, whereas business users tend to come with static IP addresses. What’s the difference? Dynamic IP addresses free a provider to rotate its pool of IP addresses based on when their customers are connecting. Conversely, static IP addresses are an additional expense where a customer’s IP address always stays the same.

Certain residential providers let you pay extra for a static IP address but, really, static IP addresses are mainly intended for business customers because they allow more straightforward server hosting and virtual private network (VPN) access.

NBN business vs residential tech support

Regardless of your provider or whether you’re on a residential or business NBN plan, when something goes wrong, there’s always a way to contact them. Certain providers offer more ways to get in touch than others, including seven-days-a-week support. The trend with business NBN plans, though, is towards priority support, which is intended to offer a speedier resolution for potential issues. This sometimes comes at an additional cost, though.

NBN business vs residential data limits

NBN plans for residential and business users trend towards no-contract offerings with unlimited data . In terms of our comparison engine, iiNet and TPG are the only business NBN providers with data-capped plans, while all others are unlimited.

NBN business vs residential phone bundles

To get a landline phone service with a residential NBN plan, even if it’s a PAYG option, you tend to need to bundle an internet plan with a phone. While there are a handful of business NBN providers that offer no landline phone options, the standard is for a PAYG service. Some business NBN providers also bundle unlimited local and national calls, while others also throw in calls to Australian mobile numbers.

NBN business vs residential modem

Telstra Smart Modem Gen 2

There’s a similar trend between residential and business NBN plans when it comes to modems and modem-routers: BYO is the cheaper and more popular option. Still, there’s not a big difference in the actual networking device that comes from the providers that do bundle a modem or modem-router, except that Telstra offers a Smart Modem Gen 2 for residential users and a Business Smart Modem for business customers.

Why Is Telstra’s Business Model Under Pressure?

Mark A. Gregory Avatar

Of these layoffs, 377 will take effect immediately from within the Telstra Enterprise business unit. Most of the remaining cuts will be announced in detail soon and finalised by the end of the year.

The announcement followed a review of the company’s enterprise division, which services large business and government clients.

Providing voice calls and other network services to these clients has historically been an important part of Telstra’s business. But recently, low-cost internet-based competitors have been whittling away at this revenue.

Speaking at a press conference, Telstra CEO Vicki Brady said while the company continues to see solid growth across its mobile network, it now faces a changing business landscape:

Our industry and the world we are operating in are changing. We have new and different competitors. We have rapid advances in technologies happening. Our customer needs continue to evolve and we have ongoing inflationary and cost pressures.

But it’s possible these job cuts are also part of a strategy to boost Telstra’s flagging share price, which fell to a low of A$3.57 the day of the announcement.

This was down from its 52-week high of $4.46 and well below its ten-year high of $6.61 in February 2015.

telstra financial hardship acma

How did we get here?

In February, Telstra reported a 66.7 per cent drop in EBITDA – an important measure of earnings – for its fixed-enterprise business unit.

Telstra said this fall-off was the result of a continued decline in income from call charges, business connectivity, network applications and services.

It’s possible the slowing Australian economy may have exacerbated the decline, impacting businesses’ spending on telecommunications products and services.

Telstra has been under pressure to find savings under its ambitious “ T25 ” target to achieve a $500 million reduction in net costs by the end of financial year 2024–25.

Telstra expects this major restructure to incur a one-off cost of between $200 million to $250 million over this period.

The company also said it would focus on reducing other cost categories, including non-labour-related costs. One such cost is energy usage, a major expense for telcos .

Now, the company expects to achieve $350 million of its cost reduction target by the 2025 deadline.

Telstra hasn’t directly tied this latest round of cuts to the broader adoption of artificial intelligence (AI). But the company has been exploring ways of using the technology.

Telstra announced in February it was moving forward with AI technologies it had developed in-house, following pilot trials with frontline team members.

The company was at pains to point out that these particular technologies aim to assist existing human staff, for example, by summarising interactions with customers or better searching for information from internal databases.

Down the line, however, further adoption of AI could eventually impact employee numbers as Telstra and other telecommunications companies aim to ramp up and exploit cost-cutting uses of the technology.

Mobile tells a stronger story

Telstra’s core mobile business has meanwhile performed strongly, with subscriber numbers growing steadily over the last year.

The company’s latest announcement included a significant change to the terms of its postpaid mobile plans.

Prices of these plans have historically been automatically indexed to the consumer price index each financial year. That will no longer happen, bringing postpaid mobile plans into line with most of Telstra’s other products. There will be no increase this July.

Brady said the move would give the company greater flexibility:

This approach reflects there are a range of factors that go into any pricing decision, and will provide greater flexibility to adjust prices at different times and across different plans based on their value propositions and customer needs.

The change does mean consumers might see relief from large automatic price increases when the consumer price index is high.

But it will likely cause concern among consumer groups. There will now be uncertainty on the exact timing of price changes for postpaid mobile plans, and their size and direction will be largely up to Telstra.

Telstra’s future direction remains unclear

There are other pressures looming for Telstra.

Before the next election, the government is expected to announce the outcome of a review into the universal service obligation (USO), a consumer protection that guarantees Australians “reasonable access to fixed telephone and payphone services”.

Telstra is Australia’s nominated USO provider, and this delivery contract has been a key driver of its dominant position in regional and remote areas. But there’s no guarantee it will be renewed with Telstra in 2032.

Telstra says its restructuring aims to put the company in better financial shape. But the announcement does not offer strong guidance on how Telstra plans to grow its business in coming years.

Telstra is facing increasing competition in a maturing market and its growth appears to be based primarily on expanding its customer base rather than introducing new products and services.

In the short term, Telstra continues to struggle to reduce costs at a time of what it calls “higher-than-expected inflation” and high energy costs.

The Cheapest NBN 50 Plans

It’s the most popular NBN speed in Australia for a reason. Here are the cheapest plans available.

Telstra to sack 2,800 workers as part of cost-cutting measures

Telstra has revealed plans to sack up to 2,800 workers as part of its latest cost-cutting measures.

The telco said the majority of the job cuts would happen by the end of this year.

Telstra had more than 31,000 employees at the time of its last annual report in August 2023, meaning that the job losses represent roughly 9 per cent of its workforce.

"I appreciate the uncertainty proposed changes like this can create for our people and we will support them through this change with care and transparency," said Telstra's chief executive Vicki Brady.

"As we propose specific changes, we will talk them through with our teams and union representatives first."

In a statement to the ASX, Telstra said it would begin consultation on 377 of those affected roles with unions and the relevant teams immediately.

Communication Workers Union (CWU) national assistant secretary James Perkins said staff representatives had no prior warning of the planned lay-offs.

"We were absolutely unaware and we've been blindsided by this decision," he told The World Today.

"We cannot possibly see how Telstra can go on maintaining the level of service it needs to satisfy its customers' expectations when you've just cut another 9 per cent of your workforce."

Telecommunications management and business consultant Paul Budde said job cuts were not a surprise, but the scale of them was.

"It's not just a matter of continuing to fine-tune or readjust — this is a massive change," he told ABC News.

These roles are within Telstra Enterprise, which provides communication services to big businesses.

"As we look to streamline our network application and services portfolio, as part of that work, we may well partner with other players in the market to be able to provide those services," the Telstra CEO told reporters.

"We may transition customers to other players that can provide some of those more specialised services."

Telstra drops inflation-linked mobile price rises

As part of the redundancy announcement, Telstra also revealed that it would drop controversial inflation-linked price increases from its post-paid mobile plans.

Ms Brady said that meant there would be no price rise on July 1.

"We will not be making pricing changes in July for our consumer post-paid mobile plans," she told reporters.

"Our pricing review continues, as you would expect, across all of our products."

UBS telco analyst Lucy Huang said that may not end up being good news for customers, as inflation kept falling.

"TLS (Telstra) suggests this gives them more flexibility on pricing review (e.g. Vodafone put through higher than CPI linked price increases in late Mar/early April this year)," she wrote in a short note reacting to Telstra's announcement.

Barrenjoey analysts Eric Choi and Annie Zhu agree.

"Investor feedback had suggested TLS could have the ability to push prices up by more than CPI – we therefore theorise TLS could be delaying price increases in FY25 (but eventually announce increase greater than CPI)," they wrote.

Ms Brady also said the redundancy program would not negatively affect retail customer service.

"We have invested significantly in our customer service over recent years. That includes onshoring our call centres for consumer and small business customers," she said.

"It includes buying back our stores to deliver consistently good experience. None of these changes impact those commitments."

However, Mr Budde said even if the quality of service does not deteriorate further, it is still lower than in the past.

"I think we, the customers, have been conditioned to a lower level of customer service over years because of the robots and call centres and things like that," he argued.

Treasurer Jim Chalmers said it was a "very distressing day" for affected staff, and that the federal government would be closely watching Telstra's pricing policies.

"We will be seeking advice from the ACCC about some of the claims that Telstra is making about their new pricing strategy and the role of the NBN," he told reporters at a press conference.

'Ongoing work to reduce costs'

Ms Brady said details of the further job cuts would be announced over the next couple of months.

"We will continue to work through the detail as fast as we can on the remaining proposed changes and I anticipate being able to update our employees around mid-July," she told reporters at a press conference.

"As part of our ongoing work to reduce our costs, we will also focus on other cost categories including non-labour-related costs."

Mr Budde said Telstra is struggling to raise additional revenue, leaving cost-cutting as its main means of profit growth.

"The reality is that telecommunications is a utility, yeah? The value-add is going to the digital companies," he explained.

"Revenue is flat — 1 per cent up, 1 per cent down on an annual basis — at the same time, costs are rising 10 per cent to 20 per cent over the last year alone.

"So you really see this dramatic change in cost-cutting in order to ensure that the company remains viable, that it can deliver profits."

Mr Budde said some of the potential future areas to cut costs involve cooperation with other telcos and the increasing use of AI.

"We might see more network sharing to cut costs in that particular area," he speculated .

"Artificial intelligence will be a hot topic because it can streamline the company, it can streamline customer services.

"So they will invest more in technology rather than in people."

Telstra hopes to save around $350 million a year in costs by the end of next financial year, but anticipates between $200-250 million in restructuring costs related to the redundancies.

The telco has told investors it expects to make an $8.4-8.7 billion pre-tax, pre-interest profit (EBITDA) in financial year 2025.

They were not impressed, with Telstra's share price down 1.9 per cent to $3.60 shortly before the close of trade.
