Delta Airlines (DL) will charge $200.00 USD extra for bags that are from 63 to 115 linear inches or from 160 to 292 centimeters on U S domestic flights. Bags greater than 115 linear inches or 292 centimeters will not be accepted as checked baggage / hold luggage.

Are there fees for sports equipment on Delta Airlines (DL)?

How can i calculate my baggage fees.

To estimate your baggage fees you must take into consideration the travel destination , date of ticket purchase, and the number, size and weight of your bags , whether you check in online or at the airport. Discounted baggage fees are no longer offered by Delta Airlines for online check-in !

How many checked bags am I allowed?

Every passenger is permitted up to 10 checked bags on Delta operated flights . On Delta Connection carrier flights only 4 checked bags per passenger are allowed. Special restrictions apply for flights to or from Key West, Florida , allowing only one checked bag per passenger .

All bags starting with the third checked bag, if not subject to special exception, are considered excess baggage and additional fees will be charged per piece.

How many free bags can I check?

You can check in without paying baggage fee up to 2 bags, depending on the route, class of service and bag weight .

If you are flying First or Delta One class within the U.S. , you can check for free 2 bags up to 70 lbs / 32 kg each . If you are flying Delta Premium  Select class within the U.S. , you can check for free 2 bags up to 50 lbs / 23 kg each . If on the same route you are flying in the Main Cabin (Delta Comfort+, Main Cabin, Basic Economy fares), you must pay a 30 USD, respectively 40 USD fee , for the first and respectively the second checked bag that does not exceed 50 lbs / 23 kg .

For all other flights, the general rule¹ is 1 checked bag allowed per passenger, with no extra charge . For certain routes, specific allowances apply.

¹Standard Baggage Allowance

Can I benefit from special exceptions from standard baggage allowance?

Special exceptions regarding standard baggage allowance apply for:

• SkyMiles Medallion Members.
• SkyMiles credit cardmembers from American Express.
• Active duty U.S. military personnel.

On Delta Airlines flights, you are allowed one piece of carry-on  and one personal item (i.e. laptop, diaper bag, etc.), as long as they can be properly stored in the overhead bin or under the seat in front of you. In addition, you may take on board the following approved items: a jacket or umbrella, food or drink purchased after clearing the security checkpoint, duty-free merchandise, or special items (e.g. strollers, child restraint seats or assistive devices such as wheelchairs or crutches).

You are not allowed one piece of carry-on, but only one personal item, on Delta Connection flights, or if the aircraft has no more than 50 seats .

To avoid being asked to check your baggage, you must comply with the following size restrictions:

• 22″ height, 14″ length, 9″ depth (45 linear inches) / 56 x 35 x 23 cm (114 linear cm) .

Delta Airlines will accept carry-on baggage within space availability limit. If there is no more available space at the time you board, your carry-on item will be gate checked, at no extra charge, and returned to you upon deplaning. This rule does not apply to assistive devices!

There is no maximum weight requirement for carry-on baggage, with the following exceptions :

• Maximum 7 kg – Singapore (Changi International Airport).
• Maximum 10 kg (22 lbs) – Beijing (Beijing Capital International Airport), Shanghai (Pudong International Airport) .

Checked Baggage

For checked baggage, Delta requires outside personal identification, but also recommends inside identification details, just in case the outside identification gets lost. When using Online or Mobile Check-in , all you have to do at the airport is go to the nearest “Baggage Drop” area, or curbside check-in station (starting 6 hours before departure), and drop off your bags.

Size and weight restrictions applied by Delta Airlines are:

• Weight – 50 lbs (23 kg).
• Size – 62 linear inches (157 linear cm).

Delta Airlines will charge you an extra fee³  (where appropriate, in addition to the excess baggage fee) for each bag that does not meet the above limitations . Delta Airlines accepts additional, oversized, and overweight baggage on a standby basis.

Baggage Service

Delta Airlines is not responsible for your unchecked baggage . Nevertheless, if you lose such an item on board, in the gate area or in a Delta Sky Club you have 7 days to fill out a Report Lost Items online. Where your item is found, Delta Airlines will contact you.

You can track checked baggage during and after your trip using the Bag Tag Number or File Reference Number, online or with the Delta Fly app.

If your checked baggage is delayed, lost or damaged you must notify a Delta Airlines representative from the Baggage Service Center, within time limitations, and you will receive a Property Irregularity Report with your File Reference Number. Then, with your File Reference Number, you must file an online claim, providing all necessary information and documentation.

Time limitations for baggage claims :

• Domestic flights – 24 hours, for lost items from checked baggage, delayed or damaged checked baggage.

– 21 days, for lost baggage.

• International flights – 7 days, for lost items from checked baggage or damaged checked baggage.

– 21 days, for delayed or lost checked baggage.

For delays of over 12 hours from the moment you report it, you can request a Delayed Bag Fee Rebate, under certain conditions. Also, you may file an”Out of Pocket Expense” form, for expense reimbursement.

For damaged baggage , all bags need to be appraised by the baggage service office personnel, immediately after the flight. Where Delta Airlines repairs your baggage, you can check up on repair status.

Delta Airlines is responsible only within the Delta Airlines Liability Limits unless you declare a higher valuation, and pay an excess valuation charge.

Delta Air Lines follows a fairly standard baggage policy regarding free carry-on bags. It charges average fees for flights within the U.S. or between the U.S. and Canada or Mexico and includes 1 to 2 bags in the base fare for international flights (dependent on cabin class).

Additional pieces and overweight or oversized bags carry a pretty hefty fee, so stick to your regulations!

Size Restrictions

• Personal: Delta doesn’t specify dimensions but refers to items such as purses, briefcases, camera bags, and laptop bags as examples of typical carry-ons.
• Standard: 22 x 14 x 9 inches (56 x 35 x 23 centimeters)

Weight Restrictions (From the Following Departure Airports Only)

• Beijing Capital International Airport (PEK) : 22 pounds (10 kilograms)
• Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG) : 22 pounds (10 kilograms)
• Singapore Changi International Airport (SIN) : 15 pounds (7 kilograms)

Lap Infant Carry-On Policy

• Unticketed infants do not have a baggage allowance, so any baggage for the child counts against the adult baggage allowance. An adult can bring an infant seat, bassinet, breast pump, and associated cooler bag in addition to their carry-on.

Stroller Check Policy

• Delta Air Lines does not count strollers or children’s car seats as part of your standard baggage. Therefore, Delta checks these items for free at the curbside, ticket counter, or gate.

Checked bags can’t weigh more than 50 pounds (23 kilograms) for economy and 70 pounds (32 kilograms) for Delta One, first, or business class. The linear dimensions must be 62 inches (158 centimeters) or less.

Many airlines refer to “maximum linear dimensions” when talking about baggage allowances. This is merely the number you get when you add the length, width (or height), and depth of a piece of luggage. For example, if you had a suitcase that was 26 inches long, 20 inches tall, and 16 inches deep, its linear dimensions would be 62 inches, or just about the maximum for many airlines.

How Do I Know If I Will Fit In an Airline Seat?

The sizes have changed as airplane technology has advanced and as additional models hit the market. The kind of plane and the class you are interested in determine this.

As the industry grew over time, compromises had to be made in order to squeeze more passengers onto each airplane. As a result, the width of the seats shrunk a bit.

For instance, an Airbus A330 changed from having eight seats per row to having nine, which resulted in the seats' width decreasing to 16.7 inches.

The A350's smaller sibling, the A380, which was designed for longer flights, has a width of 18 inches. Despite the narrower breadth, Airbus conducted a study that suggested an extra inch of the room would significantly enhance sleep quality.

Boeing adopted a little different strategy. The business chose the 17-inch seats, which were eventually upgraded to 18 inches when the 747 was first introduced.

The 777 increased by 0.5 inches to 18.5 inches. Overall, the average seat distance is between 17 and 18 inches, with some seats measuring less than 16 inches and others more than 19 inches.

The size of a particular airline's seats, which again varies depending on the type of aircraft, is the main concern.

Seatbelt Size

Similar to the seat width, this aspect also varies somewhat. When fully extended, a seatbelt on a plane is around 42 inches long.

Checked baggage fees are some of the most frustrating and confusing costs associated with flying. Navigating them can sometimes be a pain. Thankfully, Delta Air Lines baggage fees are relatively easy to understand due to the carrier's clear policies and charts.

While Delta checked bag fees can add up quickly, there are many ways to check your first — and sometimes second — bag for free.

This comprehensive guide will cover everything you need to know about the Delta baggage policy .

Delta carry-on guidelines

All passengers on a Delta flight can bring one carry-on bag and one personal item free of charge. Personal items — such as a laptop bag, briefcase, small backpack or diaper bag — must fit under the seat in front of you.

However, per the Delta carry-on guidelines, you're allowed only a personal item on Delta Connection flights with 50 seats or fewer due to limited overhead space. Personal items must fit securely under the seat in front of you or in an overhead bin.

Delta Connection passengers will need to check carry-on bags during boarding, but luckily, there's no charge. You'll typically get this baggage back on the jet bridge when you deplane.

Carry-on luggage must not exceed a combined length, width and height of 45 linear inches. Also, your carry-on bag can't be more than 22 inches long, 14 inches wide and 9 inches high. All measurements include any handles and wheels. These size restrictions don't apply if your carry-on is a small musical instrument.

With the Delta carry-on guidelines, there's also no weight restriction for your bag unless you are traveling from the following locations:

• Singapore : 15 pounds or less
• Beijing : 22 pounds or less
• Shanghai : 22 pounds or less

There are a few exceptions where you can bring additional items on board for free. For example, you can check a stroller or car seat at the gate if you're traveling with a child. A breast pump and associated cooler bag can be brought on board and do not count against your carry-on and personal item limit.

Alternatively, if you booked a seat for your child (required for those 2 years old and up) or if there's an open passenger seat in your row, you can bring a Federal Aviation Administration-approved car seat on board.

Delta checked baggage policy

Delta makes it relatively easy to check baggage. Within 24 hours of departure, you can check in on Delta's website or mobile app and notify Delta of the number of bags you plan to check. If you've already checked in, you can use the baggage drop lane at the airport. You may also check in and pay for bags at the airport.

The Delta baggage policy allows passengers to check up to two bags per flight. However some passengers have to pay a Delta checked bag fee.

The fee varies based on route and fare class, but those with Delta elite status or a Delta credit card will sometimes get the fee waived. Your bag's length, width and height must not add up to more than 62 inches total.

Delta baggage fees for flights within the US

For those traveling within the U.S., here's how much you can expect to pay for your first or second checked bag:

The Delta baggage weight limit is 50 pounds per bag for passengers booked in basic economy, Main Cabin and Premium Select and 70 pounds per bag for passengers flying in Delta One or first class. Additionally, passengers with Delta Medallion elite status have a 70-pound weight limit per bag before they face extra fees.

Know, though, that there are some exceptions to the above rules. For example, all passengers traveling to or from Key West, Florida, are limited to just one checked bag. Additionally, the first checked bag fee doesn't apply if you travel to or from the U.S. and Canada to either Tocumen International Airport (PTY) in Panama or El Salvador International Airport (SAL) unless you are flying on a basic economy fare. You also can't bring excess baggage (weight, size or piece) on Delta Connection or other regional jet flights to or from cities in Mexico.

Delta baggage fees for flights between the US and most international destinations

The Delta checked baggage fee varies based on your route for travel between the U.S. and most other international destinations. You can check the fee of an already booked flight or one you want to book here . Here's an overview of what to expect.

The Delta baggage weight limit for international flights is also 50 pounds per bag for most passengers. However, if you are flying in first class or Delta One, the baggage weight limit is 70 pounds per bag.

Military baggage fees

If you're an active member of the U.S. Marine Corps, Army, Air Force, Navy or Coast Guard — regardless of whether traveling on military orders or for leisure — you won't have to pay the same fees as above per Delta's Military baggage guidelines .

Those traveling on military orders can check a bag up to 80 inches in combined length, width and height. For personal or leisure travel as an active military member, your bag can be up to 62 linear inches.

Overweight and oversize baggage fees

If you are checking a bag that exceeds the above weight or dimensions, you'll face extra fees (although there's an exception for some special items ) besides the baggage fees.

For flights within the U.S. (including the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico), you'll be charged the following:

Overweight bag

• 51 to 70 pounds : $100
• 71 to 100 pounds : $200

Bags exceeding 100 pounds are not permitted.

Oversize bag

• 63 to 80 inches : $200

Bags larger than 80 inches are not permitted.

If you're checking a special item (such as sporting equipment , musical instruments or medical supplies ), you'll want to check the fee for that particular item. Many special items don't incur an excess fee, so you'll only need to pay the standard checked bag fee. For example, ski and snowboard equipment is often counted as a regular checked bag.

Excess baggage fees

If you need to check more baggage than the standard amount, Delta will allow up to 10 bags per passenger for flights operated by Delta or Delta Shuttle and up to four bags on Delta Connection flights (on a space-available basis).

Unless you are eligible to check three bags for free — per the above table — for domestic flights (including the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico), you'll be charged $150 for the third checked bag and then $200 each for bags four through 10.

Prices to carry excess baggage on international flights vary depending on the route. However, some common routes, such as flights to Canada, the Caribbean and Central America, cost the same as domestic pricing.

Excess bags must also be within the standard weight and dimension requirements. Otherwise, you'll face extra fees based on the excess weight or size.

How to avoid Delta checked bag fees

Although Delta Air Lines charges passengers a fee to check bags, there are many ways for your bags to fly for free.

Elite status allowances

Those with Delta Medallion status — Silver, Gold, Platinum and Diamond — benefit from a checked-bag-fee waiver. When traveling domestically, Silver Medallion members can check one bag for free, Gold Medallion members can check two bags for free and Platinum and Diamond Medallion members can check three bags for free.

When traveling to or from the U.S. or Canada, Medallion members in Comfort+, Main Cabin or basic economy can check one additional bag up to 50 pounds over the standard cabin allowance. Medallion members in Delta One, first class or Premium Select can check up to three free bags at no more than 70 pounds per bag.

Up to eight companions traveling on your reservation can also benefit from your elite baggage allowance on Delta-operated flights. However, for flights departing from Paris-Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG) or Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (AMS), this benefit doesn't apply.

As you can see in the charts above, those flying in the front of the plane can check bags for free. If you book a Premium Select, first-class or Delta One seat, you can check two bags for free.

However, you'll still face extra fees if your bag exceeds the standard size or weight.

While many Delta travelers already have one of the Delta credit cards — each of which waives the fee for the first checked bag — there are a few other ways to cover the cost of checking your bag.

So long as you enroll in this benefit and select Delta as your airline of choice, you could reimburse your baggage fees with this credit.

Use Delta SkyMiles to pay for baggage fees

Finally, SkyMiles members with flights originating from most domestic airports can pay for standard checked bag fees with miles instead of cash.

To redeem Delta miles for baggage fees, select the option to pay for luggage with miles while checking in on Delta's website, through the Delta mobile app or at an airport kiosk.

Keep in mind that while you can use miles to pay for standard bag fees, you can't use them to purchase excess weight or cover overweight baggage fees.

Delta Carry-On Size, Liquid Policy & Other Important Restrictions

If you have an upcoming flight with Delta and are planning to travel with just carry-on luggage , you’ll need to be up to speed with Delta’s carry-on policies.  Each airline’s rules are slightly different, so don’t just assume that what works for one will work for all airlines.

In this article, we’ll explain everything you need to know about Delta’s carry-on policy. This includes Delta’s carry-on size and weight limits, liquid policy, personal items, pets, and prohibited items.

Delta Airlines Carry-On Rules

Delta allows you to bring one carry-on bag and one personal item onboard with you at no additional charge. The only restriction is that your personal item must be small enough to fit under the seat in front of you.

Delta’s carry-on bag size limit is 22″ x 14″ x 9″. These dimensions include the wheels and handles of your carry-on bag.

If you aren’t sure what size your carry-on is, Delta has carry-on sizers located near the ticket counter.  These templates will help you make sure your carry on bag will fit in the overhead bin before you get to the gate.

As a rule, Delta doesn’t impose weight restrictions on a carry-on bag.   But there are a couple of international exceptions to this rule, including:

• Singapore – Changi International Airport (SIN): Carry-on bags cannot exceed 15 lbs. (7kgs)
• Beijing – Capital International Airport (PEK): Carry-on bags cannot exceed 22lbs. (10kgs)
• Shanghai – Pudong International Airport (PVG): Carry-on bags cannot exceed 22lbs. (10kgs)

I fly Delta almost every week into and out of many airports and I have never had them weigh my carry on bag for domestic or international flights. I have not flown to Singapore, Beijing or Shanghai on Delta, so I can’t speak to the weight restrictions on those routes.

Weight restrictions with checked luggage vary by cabin, destination, and medallion status. The general rule of thumb is if you don’t have medallion status you are allowed up to a 50 lb. weight limit per bag. If you have Delta medallion status, you are allowed up to 70 lbs. per bag for domestic flights and 50 lbs. per bag for international flights.

However, Delta One, First, and Business passengers are allowed up to 70 lb limit per piece regardless of Medallion status.

Note: If fully expanded it may not meet overhead bin size limits, so be careful to not overpack.

Delta will allow you to travel with some “special items” which do not meet their checked or carry-on size or weight dimensions. You will want to talk with the gate agent upon checking in to address the needs and characteristics of your special item. The gate agent will help you check your special item and determine if any extra fees will apply.

“Special items” may include:

• Strollers and Child safety seats
• Sporting Equipment
• Musical Instruments
• Medical Equipment & Wheelchairs
• Fragile items
• Perishable Items & Imported Merchandise

Delta’s carry-on policy allows you to travel with a free personal item in addition to one piece of carry-on luggage. Personal items include a purse, briefcase, laptop, backpack, blanket, shopping bag, or a similar-sized item.

Personal items must be able to fit under the seat in front of you. Underseat dimensions are 20 x 15 x 11 inches (55 x 38 x 28cm) on most Delta aircraft.

In addition to your carry-on bag and personal item, you can bring the following items with you:

• A jacket and umbrella
• Food or drink purchased after clearing the security checkpoint
• Duty-free merchandise
• Special items like strollers, child restraint seats, or assistive devices such as wheelchairs or crutches

If you happen to be flying on a Delta Connection flight with fifty seats or less (such as a CRJ 200), Delta’s policy states that you can bring a personal item with you, but not a carry-on bag, due to limited overhead space.  Personal items must be able to fit under the seat in front of the passenger.

All carry-on bags within Delta’s size restrictions will be gate checked, free of charge, during the boarding process and returned upon deplaning.

Delta Liquid Policy

The rules for carry-on liquids are set by the TSA (Transportation Security Administration), not by the airline.  Delta doesn’t have its own specific Liquids Policy, they just enforce the rules and policies of the TSA.

It’s also important to note that the rules for bringing a “liquid” in your carry-on bag differ from those that govern what you can bring in your checked luggage. Liquids in a carry-on bag must be 3.4 ounces or smaller and fit in a 1 quart-sized container. Anything larger must be placed in your checked luggage.

• All liquids, gels, pastes, and aerosols must be in a container of 3.4 ounces or smaller.
• All liquids must be in a resealable quart-sized clear plastic bag removed from your carry-on during the TSA screening process. 
• Special exceptions are in place for items such as medication, formula, breast milk, etc.
• Food and Drinks purchased once you have cleared TSA checkpoints are not included in these restrictions.

The TSA 3-1-1 rule provides the parameters for how passengers can bring liquids on an airplane in their carry-on.

Each passenger may carry liquids, gels, and aerosols in travel-size containers that are 3.4 ounces or 100 milliliters and are enclosed in a sealed one-quart-size bag. Common travel items that must comply with the 3-1-1 liquids rule include toothpaste , shampoo, conditioner, perfume , mouthwash, deodorant , and lotion.

Any liquid that does not meet the TSA 3-1-1 rule will either have to be checked with your luggage or will be thrown away at the security checkpoint.

Exceptions to this rule are certain medications and baby food/child nourishment .

The TSA also sets the rules for what type of food you can bring on the plane . There are two different scenarios pertaining to food: 

• The food you bring with you from home, and
• The food you buy at the airport after you have gone through security.

When bringing food with you from home, an important thing to note is the classification of liquid vs. solid foods.  

The general rule is “If you can spill it, spread it, spray it, pump it, or pour it, then it’s considered a liquid or gel”.   This means your food may be considered a liquid and will fall under the TSA 3-1-1 liquids rule , which mandates that any liquid, gel, cream, aerosol, or paste in a carry-on must be 3.4 ounces or less, and fit in one quart-size resealable bag (only one such bag is allowed per passenger).

Here’s a link to the TSA website advising what food can be brought with you on your Delta flight.  This applies to food you are bringing from home through security.  

Once you get through security, you can bring just about any food or beverage on the plane that you buy at the airport. The one exception is alcohol. You cannot bring open alcohol on the plane with you. You can bring a sealed bottle of alcohol purchased at the airport (such as a duty-free shop), but you are not allowed to open or consume alcohol on the plane unless it is provided by Delta.

Delta Pet Policy

Delta may not charge for your carry-on bag, but they will charge for your carry-on pet.

If you are going to bring a pet on board with you, it must be able to fit in a small, ventilated pet carrier that fits under the seat in front of you. You will also have to call Delta in advance to tell them you are bringing a pet with you and confirm that they are allowed on your flight.

Delta generally allows up to 2 pets in business/first class and up to 4 in the main cabin. Pets are accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis. So if your pet meets Delta’s pet requirements , contact  Delta Reservations  in advance to arrange to bring your pet on board.

Pets in cabin kennels will count as your one carry-on item.  In addition to the kennel, you can bring one personal item onboard the aircraft.

Here is a chart showing the pet fees Delta charges each way.   Double them for a round-trip flight.

If you do plan on bringing your pet with you, make sure you follow TSA’s pet policy and have an airline-approved Pet Carrier that conforms to Delta’s pet policy .

Prohibited and Restricted Items

There are certain items that are considered dangerous and classified as hazardous materials. Dangerous goods are prohibited from both your carry-on and checked baggage on all flights. The rules for these items are not specific to any airline and are mandated by the Federal Aviation Administration.

Here is a list of items that are strictly prohibited on Delta flights:

• Aerosol products (such as cooking spray or anti-static spray)
• Household Cleaners such as bleach, drain cleaners, or pesticides 
• Car Batteries
• Fireworks or explosives
• Ammunition, gunpowder, black powder, mace, and pepper spray
• Torch or blue flame lighters and all lighter refills
• Fuel (gasoline or sterno cans)
• Meals Ready to Eat (MREs)
• Pocket knife
• Paints, stains, or lubricant 
• “Strike-anywhere” matches 
• Safety razors and straight razor blades
• Hoverboards, balance gliders, self-balancing boards, or motorized riding suitcases that use lithium or lithium-ion batteries 
• Items with refrigerants including refrigerators, air conditioners, freezers, or dehumidifiers

The following items are not considered “dangerous goods” and are allowed when packaged properly, in accordance with TSA regulations:

• Ammunition, Explosives, or Firearms
• Battery or Fuel-Powered
• Food or Alcohol Transportation
• Personal Care & Medical Items
• Robotics, Machine, Household Items & Other  
• Sporting & Leisure Goods
• Tobacco, E-Cigarettes, Marijuana
• Knitting/ scissors
• Hiking or trekking poles
• Hair dryer/Straightener
• Sunscreen/bug spray
• Food as a carry-on

Carry-on Bag Sizes & Restrictions for Delta Air Lines

The differences between the Delta Air Lines carry-on policy and those of other airlines are subtle but need to be considered to prevent problems at the departure gate. Here is a brief rundown of Delta carry-on weight and size limitations, as well as what you can and cannot pack in your carry-on luggage.

Delta Carry-On Size and Weight Restrictions

Except for Delta Connection flights, Delta allows passengers to board with one carry-on bag and one personal item for free. At least one of your carry-on items must be small enough to be stored underneath the seat in front of you. Delta has both size and weight restrictions for  carry-on luggage .

Delta Carry-On Dimensions

The maximum carry-on luggage size for Delta Air Lines is 22 inches X 14 inches X 9 inches (56 cm X 35 cm X 23 cm). These dimensions include wheels and handles, so measure accordingly if you’re traveling with a roll-aboard suitcase or  backpack . Delta does make exceptions for passengers traveling with infants-in-arms, which we’ll discuss below.

Delta Carry-On Weight Restrictions

Delta does not have carry-on weight restrictions for the majority of its flights. The only carry-on weight limits that apply to carry-on are for if you depart through the following airports:

• Beijing Capital International Airport: 22 lbs (10 kg)
• Shanghai Pudong International Airport: 22 lbs (10 kg)
• Singapore Changi International Airport: 15 lbs (7 kg)

Delta Personal Item Size

The Delta carry-on policy allows customers to travel with a free personal item in addition to one piece of carry-on luggage. Personal items can include small backpacks, purses, briefcases, handbags, tote bags, camera bags, diaper bags, and  laptop bags — as long as the personal item can fit underneath the seat in front of you.

Delta underseat dimensions are 20 inches X 15 inches X 11 inches (55 cm X 38 cm X 28 cm) on most aircraft. To ensure your personal item fits these dimensions, choose an item that is 17 inches X 13 inches X 9 inches (43 cm X 33 cm X 23 cm) or smaller.  Travelpro has a variety of carry on backpacks for travel that’ll fit many airlines’ personal item dimensions.

Delta Gate Checking Fees

If your carry-on bag or personal item exceeds Delta carry-on size dimensions, you may have to check it at the gate. While Delta does not charge a gate-checking fee, you must pay $30 for your first checked bag and $40 for the second. If you already have two checked bags and have to check your carry-on luggage, you will have to pay an excess baggage fee of $85 to $95 per bag, depending on your flight itinerary.

Delta Connection and Carry-On Restrictions

Delta Connection flights tend to be smaller airplanes with limited overhead space. Passengers traveling on Delta Connection flights can only carry personal items which can fit either in overhead bins or under seats. Carry-on bags for Delta Connection flights will be gate-checked without charge and returned as you disembark. Please ensure your carry-on baggage has a pink gate claim tag for identification.

Medically necessary assistive devices are not subject to Delta Connection restrictions.

What Can I Bring In My Carry On?

The Delta carry-on policy determines what you can and cannot bring on board. In addition to your free carry-on and personal item, you can also bring the following:

• A jacket or coat
• An umbrella
• Assistive devices such as crutches and walking canes
• Child safety seats
• Duty-free merchandise
• Food or drink purchased past security checkpoints
• Wheelchairs

Delta Carry-On Liquids

Delta abides by TSA restrictions for carry-on liquids, gels, pastes, and aerosols. Containers for such substances have a maximum size of 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) and must all fit into a single, sealable quart-size clear plastic bag. Beverages purchased past security checkpoints do not count towards Delta carry-on liquid restrictions.

Unticketed Infants and Carry-On Baggage Allowances

Unticketed infants (infants who travel on an adult's lap) do not have baggage allowances, so any bags or baggage for the child count towards the adult’s carry-on allowance. You may bring an infant seat, breast pump and associated cooler bag, or bassinet on board for free in addition to your carry-on bag and personal item.

Strollers and car seats are not counted as standard luggage. You may check such items for free at curbside, the ticket counter, or the gate.

Duty-Free Items

If the country you are traveling in has a duty-free program, you can purchase items sealed in clear plastic bags by the sellers. You may then travel with that item in your possession or in your carry-on without penalty.

Not all regions have duty-free programs. If you switch flights in such countries, you may not have a chance to add the item to your checked baggage, in which case it may be confiscated. Check whether your flight takes you through regions without duty-free programs before making purchases.

Special Items and Delta

Delta does allow people to travel with “special items” which do not meet their checked or carry-on dimensions. Such items may include:

• Children’s seats
• Medical equipment
• Musical Instruments
• Perishables
• Imported Merchandise

Each special item counts as one bag. Depending on the item size, available overhead compartment space, and the Delta carry-on policy, you may be able to board the plane with such items as carry-on. Otherwise, you will need to check the item. Delta may charge additional fees for special items that are oversized or overweight.

Delta Air Lines Prohibited Carry-On Items

The following items are prohibited in carry-on bags according to the Delta carry-on policy:

• Aerosol products, including anti-static spray and cooking spray
• Bleach, drain cleaners, and similar household cleaning products

Delta One and Delta One Suites

Delta One is Delta's business-class product with lie-flat seats. (Delta One Suites are the same class of service, but the seats have a half-height sliding door for additional privacy.) These are most frequently used on transcontinental domestic flights as well as long-haul international routes.

Seats: While all Delta One seats are lie-flat, the specific design varies per aircraft, and some seats are better than others — some are quite old, offer little privacy, or require you to climb over your neighbor to reach the aisle. When booking a flight, you can usually look up what type of aircraft you'll be flying, but that's always subject to change before departure. You're not guaranteed a specific aircraft, and you might end up with an inferior Delta One seat if there's an equipment swap.

Meals: Delta One passengers are served plated hot meals; alcoholic beverages are complimentary. 

Amenities: Delta One passengers receive an amenity kit with Grown Alchemist toiletries, noise-canceling headphones to use during the flight, and a mattress pad for the seat (on some flights).

Baggage Allowance: Delta One passengers can check two bags weighing up to 70 pounds each for free.

Other Perks: Delta One passengers are granted access to Delta's lounges, known as the Sky Club. They're also given Sky Priority check-in and early boarding.

Premium Select

Premium Select is Delta's premium economy product. This is the newest cabin class, and it falls in between Delta One and Comfort+. Only some of Delta's fleet has this cabin — it's most commonly found on long-haul international routes.

Seats: Seats are not lie-flat, but they're more spacious and have a deeper recline than economy. They also have footrests for additional comfort.

Meals: Premium Select meals are not plated like those in Delta One, but they're more elevated compared to economy dishes. Alcoholic beverages are complimentary.

Amenities: Premium Select passengers enjoy a scaled-back version of the Delta One amenity kit — Grown Alchemist lip balm, an eye mask, a toothbrush and toothpaste, ear plugs, and socks — as well noise-canceling headphones. Bedding includes a memory foam pillow and a blanket.

Baggage Allowance: Premium Select passengers can check two bags weighing up to 50 pounds each for free.

Other Perks: At check-in, Premium Select passengers can use the Sky Priority desk, and they're given earlier boarding.

First Class

Delta's first class is the top cabin class on most domestic and short-haul international flights. (Delta planes don't have both Delta One and first class; they'll have one or the other.)

Seats: Seats are more akin to spacious armchairs, not like economy's benches with armrests. They do not lie-flat, but they do have extra recline.

Meals: Meal service depends on the distance of your flight and time of day. Some flights enjoy hot meals, others have cold dishes, and a few have extensive snack baskets.

Amenities: First-class passengers are given either earbuds or noise-canceling headphones, depending on the plane and route.

Baggage Allowance: First-class passengers can check two bags weighing up to 70 pounds each for free.

Other Perks: First-class passengers are given Sky Priority check-in and can board the aircraft first. They are not granted Sky Club access.

Comfort+

Comfort+ is technically in the economy cabin, but it offers a higher class of service and more legroom than Main Cabin seats. It can be found on all Delta aircraft on all routes.

Seats: The seats are standard economy seats, but they have more legroom than those in Main Cabin. They're also located in the front of the plane.

Meals: Meal service depends on the distance of your flight and time of day. On long-haul flights, you'll be served a hot meal; otherwise, you'll just be offered snacks. Most notably, alcoholic beverages are free for Comfort+ passengers.

Amenities: On long-haul international flights, Comfort+ passengers are given an eye mask and earplugs. On all flights, Comfort+ passengers are offered earbuds.

Baggage Allowance: If you're in Comfort+, you'll have to pay to check a bag. You can take a carry-on and personal item on board for free.

Other Perks: Comfort+ boards before passengers in Main Cabin.

Main Cabin is the standard economy class, found on all Delta planes on all routes.

Seats: You know the drill — economy seats are fairly small with limited legroom. Main Cabin passengers can pay to sit in an exit row for more space.

Meals: As with Comfort+, meal service depends on the distance of your flight and time of day: you'll either get a hot meal or snacks. Alcoholic beverages are available for purchase.

Amenities: Main Cabin passengers are given earbuds. On overnight flights, you may be offered a blanket and pillow.

Baggage Allowance: Main Cabin passengers are allowed one personal item and one carry-on bag; checked bags cost extra.

Basic Economy

Basic economy lies within the same area as Comfort+ and Main Cabin — that is, the economy cabin — but it's a heavily restricted and therefore discounted fare.

Seats: Basic economy seats are the same as those in Main Cabin.

Meals: Basic economy passengers are served the same meal as those in Main Cabin; alcoholic beverages can be purchased.

Baggage Allowance: You must pay for checked bags, but a carry-on and personal item are free.

Amenities: Basic economy passengers are given earbuds. On overnight flights, you may be offered a blanket and pillow.

Other Perks: There are no other perks given to basic economy passengers, unless you count the discounted fare.

Choosing a cabin class is largely a personal choice, factoring in budget and comfort. The one rule we tend to stand by, though, is skipping basic economy if you your budget allows. It's the most restrictive ticket, as you won't be able to pick your seat in advance, meaning you'll likely end up in the middle, nor will you be able to earn frequent flier miles.  

If you thought you were only picking a cabin class, think again. Fare classes are specific codes that ultimately indicate the price and terms (whether you can get an upgrade, refund, or more) of a specific ticket. "SkyMiles has done its best to reduce the value you're going to get for your points so that it's rare to get an outsized return. In my experience, Delta miles are worth less than those of most competitors," says Leff. "That's even frequently true when redeeming miles for partner business class awards, although the best value for SkyMiles awards is when your trip doesn't touch the United States — for example, Mexico to Europe rather than the U.S. to Europe."

There's no right or wrong way to spend your miles, so you'll have to weigh your specific situation before making any decisions. Ott says, "It really depends on the value being offered at the time, and how your cash finances relate to your Delta SkyMiles points balances."

The wording on their website leads to confusion. Since they have a list of “approved” personal items it suggests that other items absent from the list might be unapproved .

That’s not the case.

Any bag that you can fit under the seat is “approved” by Delta. It would be better to change this wording to “Example Personal Items”.

Delta also says “1 item of similar or smaller size to those listed above”. Meaning you can bring any bag that is the same size as a purse, briefcase, camera bag, or diaper bag.

Aer Lingus' carry-on policy depends on where you're flying. For trans-Atlantic flights, you can bring one carry-on bag within the dimensions above, plus a small personal item for free. If you're flying within Europe on Aer Lingus, the rules are a bit different: You'll have to pay a fee to bring a carry-on with you on board, starting at 5.99 euros. However, you can check that same bag for free.

If you're flying Aer Lingus Regional (a service with smaller planes, flying mostly around Ireland and the U.K.), a smaller carry-on limit applies: 18.5 x 13 x 8 inches, with a weight limit of 15 pounds.

All Aeroméxico customers can bring a standard carry-on bag and a personal item on board. Be careful with the weight limit, though: For international flights or basic fare flights within Mexico, these two items combined cannot weigh more than 22 pounds. So, if your carry-on bag weighs 15 pounds, for example, your personal item cannot be more than 7 pounds.

While there's no weight limit for carry-on luggage, Air Canada says your carry-on bag should be light enough that it can easily be lifted into the overhead bin. Also note that airport purchases (for example, larger duty-free items) count toward your baggage limit.

Note that both your personal item and carry-on bag (referred to as "hand baggage") combined must not weigh more than 26 pounds if you're traveling economy. The weight limit is 40 pounds for premium economy and other higher-class cabins.

Cathay Pacific has shifted from a weight allowance to a piece allowance, and this policy varies by itinerary. Passengers are generally permitted to bring one carry-on bag plus a small personal item (and assistive devices like a walking stick), but it's best to check your booking carefully to confirm the exact allowance. You're asked to check in any baggage that's too heavy to lift into the overhead compartment.

Since easyJet is a budget airline, standard fares only allow customers to bring one personal item (called a "small cabin bag") aboard for free. Fees for standard carry-on bags are between 5.99 and 32.99 British pounds, depending on your destination and when you add an extra bag to your reservation.

The above rules apply to all economy passengers except those traveling from Brazil, whose carry-on luggage can weigh up to 22 pounds. Emirates only allows economy passengers to bring one item on board; whether you bring a carry-on bag for the overhead bin or a personal item to tuck under the seat, this bag must comply with the size limits.

Be aware that the 22-pound weight limit applies to both your personal item and carry-on combined. If your flight was booked through Iberia but is operated by Vueling, similar rules apply, but the size limits for your carry-on bags are slightly smaller.

If you're traveling on the cheaper Light ticket, you may be asked to check your carry-on bag for no extra cost, if space is limited.

The above rules apply to LowFare+ customers. Passengers who fly LowFare (comparable to Basic Economy fare) can only bring a personal item (underseat bag) measuring 15 x 11.5 x 7.5 inches.

Qantas 

Economy passengers can opt to bring a nonrigid garment bag measuring 45 x 24 x 4 inches (or 73 linear inches) instead of a standard 22 x 14 x 9-inch carry-on bag. The above rules apply to all economy tickets and vary for higher classes on international and domestic flights with Qantas.

Qatar Airways allows passengers to bring multiple personal items provided they fit under the seat in front of you. Unlike with other airlines, laptops and laptop bags do not count as personal items and must fit within your main hand baggage allowance. For tickets issued in Brazil, the carry-on weight limit is 22 pounds.

Be careful: Qatar doesn't accept carry-ons longer than 20 inches, which is shorter than many other airlines.

Ryanair is a low-cost carrier, so unless you pay extra, you can only bring one small bag that fits under the seat in front of you, per the personal item guidelines above. To bring a larger carry-on bag, travelers need to purchase Ryanair's Priority & 2 Cabin Bags option, which typically costs between 6 and 32 euros depending on your destination.

Most (but not all) Scandinavian Airlines fares allow you to bring one traditional carry-on bag, plus a personal item, which SAS calls an "underseat bag." There's one exception: Passengers traveling within Europe on the Go Light fare must pay for a larger carry-on bag. If you booked a Go Light ticket for intercontinental flights, a carry-on bag is included.

Singapore Airlines has an unusual method for measuring carry-on bags – the dimensions of the bag must not add up to more than 45 linear inches total. For example, a bag measuring 15 x 15 x 15 inches would be suitable. All passengers can bring one bag of this size, plus a smaller personal item. The personal item, whose dimensions are specified above, does not count toward the 15-pound carry-on limit.

Virgin Atlantic lets every passenger bring a carry-on bag, including children younger than age 2. You can bring a bag weighing no more than 13 pounds for your child, in addition to a collapsible stroller and/or car seat. Each passenger is also allowed to bring a handbag or small backpack, an umbrella, a walking stick and airport purchases. Take note: Laptops do not count as personal items on Virgin Atlantic and should fit into your main carry-on bag. There's no specific size limit on the other personal items, but bags or airport purchases should fit under the seat in front of you.

Airline Passenger of Size Policies: Will You Be Forced to Buy an Extra Seat?

As airlines continue to cram more and more people into each plane, the flying experience gets less comfortable for all passengers, especially passengers of a heavier weight. But is there a point where seat sizes restrict someone’s ability to fly? Most carriers now have some sort of policy in place to ensure that all passengers have adequate room for both comfort and safety, but policies differ in degree and detail.

Most airlines recommend that if you think you will be too large for your seat, you should purchase a second seat at the time you make your original booking (or, of course, buy a ticket in first or business class). Some airlines will offer a discount on the second seat or refund the cost if the plane isn’t full, but in many cases larger passengers simply have to pay twice the price as other flyers.

Are Airline Passenger Weight Policies Fair?

Airline seating policies surrounding passenger weight bring up some sensitive issues. Who decides if someone fits in the seat, and when do they decide? Is the decision left up to a flight attendant after the entire plane has boarded? Is it somebody at the gate? At check-in? Will there someday be a BMI (Body Mass Index) field on booking sites? Might we eventually have to sit in a test seat, much like the metal cages that measure the size of your carry-on bag?

Over the years, some of these questions have moved out of the realm of the rhetorical—though there have been very few cases where the airlines’ policies have been tested or disputed in public (not surprisingly, due to the very sensitive nature of the issue). Most overweight travelers have simply taken the abuse, or made their case without going too public.

On a broader level, is it fair or logical for the airlines to keep shrinking airplane seats while requiring those left behind to, oftentimes literally, pay the price? This makes things awkward for everyone—including the large passengers themselves. (See the moving essay What it’s like to be that fat person sitting next to you on the plane .)

There is a simple solution, of course: wider seats on planes. In the same way that airlines offer “economy plus” sections with more legroom, they could have rows that have fewer and wider seats. (There’s always the option of business class in this case, but airlines could do the same thing in economy class, just without the free booze, dedicated loo, and big upcharges.)

The airlines argue it would be too costly to retrofit planes to include larger seats—so for now, the traveling public is stuck with the status quo. Below is a run-down of seating policies regarding passenger weight on several major airlines in the U.S. and abroad.

Alaska Airlines’ Customers of Size Policy

Alaska Airlines requires the purchase of a second seat for any passenger who can’t “comfortably fit within one seat with the armrests in the down position.” If you purchase a second seat in advance, and your flights all take off with at least one seat available, you can get a refund for the cost of the second seat. For those who haven’t purchased a second seat in advance, you may do so the day of your flight; if two seats aren’t available together, you might need to take a later flight.

Allegiant’s Passenger of Size Policy

Allegiant recommends that passengers who are unable to lower their armrest purchase a second ticket at the time of booking. If the passenger waits until the day of travel to request a second seat, “the agent will be unable to sell a second ticket unless two seats are available side-by-side,” says the airline website. If an extra seat is unavailable, the passenger will not be able to fly.

American Airlines’ Extra Space Policy

American requires passengers to purchase a second seat if they need a seatbelt extension and “extra space outside a single seat to travel safely.” The airline recommends that you buy both seats during your original booking (at the same rate). If you don’t book two seats in advance, you will be responsible for any fare difference on a second seat purchased the day of your flight or a larger seat in a higher class. If the airline can’t accommodate you on your scheduled flight, the airline will let you purchase two seats on a later flight for the same price as your original seats.

Delta Airlines’ Extra Seat Space Policy

Delta does not require larger passengers to purchase an extra seat, even if a seatbelt extender is required. However, the website notes that “if a passenger impedes on another passenger, they may be asked to move to another location that provides additional space, or in the event of a full flight, be asked to take a later flight with available seating.” and therefore recommends passengers who require extra space to purchase a second seat at the time of booking.

Frontier’s Customer of Size Policy

Frontier requires that customers who are unable to lower both armrests purchase a second seat “prior to travel.”

Hawaiian Airlines’ Policy for Guests Needing Additional Room

Hawaiian recommends that flyers who can’t sit comfortably with both armrests lowered call in advance to reserve a second seat. If you don’t do this, the airline “will try to find a suitable alternative,” but if this isn’t possible, you may not be able to fly on your originally scheduled flight.

JetBlue’s Extra Seating Policy

I was unable to find an official policy on JetBlue’s website, however JetBlue has a process in place for booking a second seat for any reason, found here . JetBlue seats are between 17.8 and 18.4 inches.

Southwest Airlines’ Customer of Size Policy

Southwest encourages larger passengers to purchase an extra seat in advance to guarantee that sufficient space will be available on their flight; the airline promises to refund all extra seat purchases, even if the flight is oversold. Passengers can also wait until the day of their flight to speak with a customer service person at the gate, who will give them a complimentary additional seat if it’s available.

Spirit Airlines’ Extra Seat Policy

Spirit requires that any passenger who “encroaches on an adjacent seat area and/or is unable to sit in a single seat with the armrests lowered” purchase an additional seat. Travelers who need a seatbelt extension are not eligible to sit in a seat with an inflatable seatbelt.

United Airlines’ Extra Seating Policy

If you can’t buckle your seatbelt (with an extension if necessary) and fit into a seat with the armrests down—without encroaching “significantly” on the adjacent space—you must purchase an additional seat or pay for an upgrade to a roomier seat on United . The carrier recommends buying two seats at the time of booking, at which time you’ll pay the same fare for the second seat; if you wait until the day of travel, you’ll pay the fare available that day. If no additional seats or upgrades are available, you’ll have to rebook on the next flight with availability. (United will, however, waive the change fees.)

Airline Passenger of Size Policies Outside the U.S.

There are too many airlines around the world to enumerate every single policy, but below is a sampling.

Under the One Person One Fare program in Canada, “carriers may not charge more than one fare for persons with disabilities who…require additional seating for themselves, including those determined to be functionally disabled by obesity.” This applies to domestic service within Canada. For flights to destinations outside of Canada, you might have to purchase an additional seat.

In Europe, Air France offers a 25 percent discount on your second seat if purchased in advance, with a full refund if there are unoccupied seats on your flight. If your flight is full, you haven’t booked an additional seat, and you can’t fit comfortably into a single seat, you may not be permitted to board. Meanwhile, British Airways requires passengers to be able to fully lower both armrests; if you can’t fit into the seat under these conditions, you must purchase an extra seat.

In the Southern Hemisphere, Qantas and LATAM suggests travelers needing extra space book an extra seat. Qantas encourages passengers to book both seats at once, as an extra seat cannot be added to an existing booking and will need to be booked separately. LATAM notes that “Passengers that due to their size must out of necessity occupy the immediately adjacent seat, can only travel in Economy in order to use this service” due to the configuration of the armrests in their other cabins.

Looking for a carrier not listed above? Airline seating policies are often difficult to find on carriers’ websites. Sometimes you can pull them up by searching “extra seat” or “customer of size,” but the best strategy is to call the customer service number—if you need to purchase an extra seat, you’ll likely end up calling the airline anyway.

What the new FAA funding legislation says about airplane seat sizes | Cruising Altitude

The new Federal Aviation Administration authorization has a lot of wonky stuff, but some interesting nuggets have fallen through the cracks.

The high-profile changes, of course, include things like much-needed additional funding for air traffic control staffing and codifying passenger compensation rules into law. One thing that hasn’t gotten as much attention, though, is the new push to get the FAA to regulate seat sizes .

Let’s back up for a second.

The last long-term FAA funding bill passed in 2018 required the agency to study evacuation standards and how seemingly ever-densifying airplane cabins affect the ability of people to get off the plane safely in an emergency. Regulations stipulate that all passengers should be able to evacuate any airplane in 90 seconds or less with only half the emergency exits available. 

Airlines and airplane manufacturers have mostly addressed this requirement through computer models in recent years, rather than live evacuation testing, but the previous law required a new live demonstration.

Members of Congress were not satisfied with how that played out .

Rep. Steve Cohen, D-Tenn., told me the last tests, which didn’t include any senior citizens, minors, or disabled participants, weren’t really representative of the traveling public.

“If you want to find out what is the ability to get off an airplane, you’ve got to have a valid sample,” he said in an interview.

So Cohen and other members of Congress pushed to get more robust testing provisions in the new FAA legislation, and Cohen said he’s optimistic it will get done properly this time around.

“It’s a much better bill for us than last time,” he told me. “It specifically says the testing has to be more practical.”

What is the minimum airplane seat size?

There’s no minimum standard for economy seats on airplanes (or seats in any other class, for that matter) in the U.S., and members of Congress say they suspect that could impede safety.

Economy airplane seats can be as close together as 28 inches on some airlines, and barely more than 16 inches wide in some configurations. The 28-inch dimension measures pitch, or the distance from a point on one seat to the same point on the seat in the row ahead. The width of airplane seats is typically defined as the distance between a seat’s armrests.

Tight airplane seats can also be uncomfortable, especially on long flights, as many of you let me know when I asserted that we’re in something of a golden age for air travel affordability and connectivity a few weeks ago. 

What does the FAA reauthorization say about airplane seat sizes?

The new FAA legislation requires the agency to reevaluate evacuation standards “including studying the impacts of passenger age, height and weight, disability status, speech difficulties, language barriers, baggage, seat size and configuration, and service animals, among other factors.”

Depending on what that testing shows, there could soon be a floor for airplane seat sizes, although that could drive up prices if airlines are forced to space out their seats more.

For its part, the FAA said it plans to comply with the regulations and begin making a rule for minimum seat sizes within 60 days or send its reasoning for any further delay to Congress.

“The FAA is grateful to have a long-term, bipartisan reauthorization bill and we look forward to implementing all provisions, including how to include all perspectives of the flying public as we continue to ensure planes can be evacuated safely,” the agency said in a statement.

What can be learned from real-world evacuations?

While evacuation testing is good, it can never quite replicate real-world evacuation scenarios. This year has already seen two noteworthy airplane evacuations: one of a Japan Airlines Airbus A350 in Tokyo and, more recently, a Delta Air Lines Airbus A321neo in Seattle.

Both evacuations took more than 90 seconds from the time the emergency slides were first deployed, although, fortunately, there were no fatalities on either.

Looking more closely at the Delta incident, the video shows people evacuating from both sides of the plane, and the procedure appears to take about two minutes from when the slides first deployed until the last person is seen walking away from the aircraft.

One aspect that surely slowed down the evacuation was the fact that many passengers appeared to take their bags with them. In an emergency, travelers should leave all their belongings behind, as bags and other items could block exits or slow people down on their way to the door.

It’s possible, though by no means guaranteed, that the Delta evacuation could have happened in 90 seconds or less if passengers did not collect their belongings first.

Cohen acknowledged that evacuations can be slowed down by baggage, and said it’s worth exploring how that affects the timeline.

“The rules should be what’s safe, and if the bags make it longer and it causes people in the last 30 seconds to die, that’s what happens, but the rules won’t change that,” he said. 

Cohen and other members of Congress have previously said that they will wait to see what the test results show before endorsing specific minimum airplane seat dimensions, but Cohen did say that he expects airlines will ultimately have to make their layouts a little roomier.

Traveling with kids here are the stroller and car seat rules for 7 major u.s. airlines.

Flying with kids is really fun. Ha, just kidding! Not only do you need to worry about whether your toddler's meltdown will lead to a plane diversion, but you also have to carry more stuff than the settlers brought on the Oregon trail.

The good news is, airlines generally give you a break and have special rules for car seats and strollers -- so you don't have to empty your bank account to bring them along (unlike with the rest of your carry-ons and luggage!).

There are limits and requirements to meet, though. Here are some of the rules for several major airline carriers.

1. Allegiant

If you're traveling with kids on Allegiant, here are the rules for your stroller or car seat:

Each ticketed customer can check or gate check one car seat and one stroller.

Allegiant does not specify a weight limit for strollers.

Children under 2 who are not lap infants must be in a car seat approved by the FAA.

2. American Airlines

Here's American's rules for bringing strollers and car seats with you when you travel:

Every ticketed customer gets one free stroller and one free car seat you can check or gate check for free.

If your stroller weighs more than 20 pounds, you can't gate check it -- it must be checked at the ticket counter. All smaller strollers can be gate checked before boarding.

If you have both a stroller and car seat, you can only gate check one of the two.

If your child under 2 has their own seat, they need a child restraint system that's in compliance with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards, unless they can sit up independently and keep their seat belt buckled for takeoff and landing.

Here's Delta's policy for flying with baby gear:

There's no fee for strollers or child restraint seats, including car seats or booster seats, and they don't count towards your baggage allowance.

Car seats, strollers, and booster seats can be gate checked or checked before going through security.

If FAA car seats are brought as carry-ons, they must be tightly secured to the seat.

Strollers must be fully collapsible.

Children under 2 must have an FAA-approved car seat if they're in their own seat. You can also place your child in an FAA-approved car seat brought on board as a carry-on if there is an open seat, even if you didn't purchase a seat for your child.

4. Frontier

Frontier has similar policies to many other airline carriers. Here are the rules:

You can check a stroller free of charge, including gate checking or checking it before security.

There is no charge for gate-checking or checking a car seat.

If your child has their own seat, they may travel in an FAA-approved car seat or an approved harness or booster seat.

Here are JetBlue's stroller and car seat rules:

Strollers and car seats can be checked at the airport or gate checked. They don't count toward your carry on or checked bag allowances.

You can have one stroller and one car seat per child.

Children in their own seats don't have to be in a car seat, as long as they can sit upright unassisted. They can be in an FAA-approved safety seat if you bought them a ticket.

6. Southwest

These are the rules if you're flying Southwest:

You can check or gate check one stroller and car seat per child for free and it will not count toward your baggage allowance.

Any type of stroller or car seat is allowed.

Infants in their own seats must have a child restraint system. You can bring a car seat from home instead of using a child restraint system.

Finally, here is United's policy for traveling with kids equipment:

Standard strollers, folding wagons, and car seats can be checked or gate checked for free.

Collapsible strollers can be stored in-cabin.

You can use an FAA approved car seat on board for children in their own seat.

Be prepared for flying with kids
