Conjunctions Worksheet For Class 5 | And, But, Because, So

Conjunctions are connecting words. They connect words, phrases and clauses together. Examples of common conjunctions are: and, but, or, because, so, though, when, before, after, if .

How to use conjunctions correctly?

Use only one conjunction to connect two clauses.

Study the examples given below.

  • I was hungry. I ate a sandwich.

There is a cause and effect relationship between these two sentences. We can combine them using the conjunction because or so .

  • Because I was hungry I ate a sandwich.
  • I ate a sandwich because I was hungry.
  • I was hungry so I ate a sandwich. (NOT Because I was hungry so I ate a sandwich.)

Another example is given below.

  • It was very cold. We sat around the fire.

We can combine these two clauses using the conjunctions as, because or so .

  • As it was very cold, we sat around the fire.
  • It was very cold so we sat around the fire.
  • Because it was very cold we sat around the fire.
  • We sat around the fire because it was very cold. (NOT As it was very cold so we sat around the fire.)

Note that the conjunctions as and because show the reason.

Subordinate Conjunctions

Subordinating conjunctions join one clause to another on which it depends for its whole meaning.

Subordinate conjunctions could denote time, cause or reason, purpose, result, condition, place, manner or extent, comparison, concession or contrast.

For example, after, so, although, as if, because, as long as, as much as, if only, just as, whether, where as, where if, wherever etc.

I didn’t reach on time because of traffic.

It was raining heavily so I got wet.

As long as there is gas we are continuing the journey.

Correlative conjunctions are conjunctions that work in pairs.

They always work in groups of two.

These forms of conjunctions connect two sentences that are equal.

Types of Conjunctions for Class 5

Conjunctions can be classified into three categories:-

  • Coordinating conjunctions
  • Subordinating conjunctions
  • Correlative conjunctions

1. Coordinating conjunctions

A coordinating conjunction is a quick phrase that is used in a sentence to join or be part of two or extra words, phrases , or clauses that have equal grammatical and syntactic importance. A coordinating conjunction is described as “a phrase such as or, and or but, that connects clauses or sentences of equal importance”   for , and , nor , b ut , o r , yet , so.

Now, let us learn examples of coordinating conjunction sentences.

  • The cat  and   dog are fighting.

2. Subordinating conjunctions

A conjunction that joins a clause or sentence to another phrase on which it depends for its full meaning is called a Subordinate conjunction. The sentence contains two statements in which one statement, sentence, or word is dependent on the other.

Subordinating Conjunctions:- after, as when, until, because, since, so, that, while, when, though, although, before, still, there, where, unless, etc . Now, Let us learn some more subordinating conjunction by using them in the sentences:-

Correlative conjunctions are pairs of words, phrases, or sentences that always connect two elements in a sentence. Correlative conjunctions are such as both…and, either..or, neither…nor, not only…but also, whether…or, no sooner…than, etc.
