Paragraph Writing Worksheets

Paragraphs are specific part of larger writing material that shows a particular theme or topic. The core purpose of writing paragraph is to make writing intuitive and unique. Paragraphs do not mix author's ideas. Initiating paragraph needs a lot of practice including webbing, brainstorming, sentence structure, correct grammar, etc. It must be precise, and concise. Follow steps strictly; otherwise, your story won't have a perfect paragraph to convey your thoughts and ideas. Go through the main topic. Ultimately number of ideas you have collection in your mind. Fill the blank paper with all of them and start webbing keywords with efficient brainstorming. Start your paragraph with these things; Introduction of the topic. Body 1 in which you will add contributing information. Body 2 in which you will elaborate above information. Then, you will write a conclusion that will be the summary of introduction. Make it succinct. If your topic is MY BEST FRIEND and you are mentioning his/her qualities, you will write them one by one by specifying firstly, secondly, and finally. You will practice it while writing Body 1. When you elaborate your information, you will express them by adding words like moreover, further, furthermore, additionally, etc.

The topic sentence is one of the most important sentences in a paragraph. It tells the reader what the rest of the paragraph is about. The topic sentence is the first sentence within a paragraph, and it says the most.

Making the Middle

What is the middle of a paragraph? What is its purpose? The sentences that explain the topic sentence is the middle of a paragraph. Those sentences must be specific and relate to the topic sentence.

Making the Middle - Part 2

Topic sentences are very important because they tell what the paragraph is about. When writing a paragraph, details are used to support the topic sentence. These details are called supporting details. In worksheet one, you wrote topic sentences for the main ideas provided. Using the topic sentences you wrote before, create at least three supporting details for each topic.

The Inevitable End

How do we write the end of a paragraph? The end of the paragraph serves two purposes. The first purpose is to provide an ending. Just like a story has an ending, so does the paragraph. The second purpose of the end to a paragraph is to remind the reader of what the topic is about and what it means. It is important to remember not to add more supporting details, or begin discussing another topic. Instead, finish the paragraph with a statement summarizing the previous information. Write closing sentences for each topic.

The Inevitable End - Part 2

While the topic sentence is one of the most important sentences of a paragraph, the closing sentence is the second most important. The closing sentence summarizes the topic and ends the paragraph successfully. Your task is to create closing sentences for each topic provided. Review the topic sentences and supporting details from your previous work to help you create a closing sentence. Be sure to remember that your closing sentence should not contain a new topic or another supporting detail!

Putting it All Together

Now that you understand the major parts of a paragraph, it is time to put the pieces of the puzzle together. Using the topic sentences, supporting details, and closing sentences from the other worksheets, create a full paragraph for each topic.

The Key Parts of a Well Written Paragraph

Paragraph is a chunk of a whole book or a detailed story. The purpose of writing paragraphs is to make the reading easy and intuitive. It is not necessary that you always consider traditional structure of paragraph writing. For short stories such as flash fiction, short fiction, etc. Make your story or short writing material's central idea best. There must a connection of cohesive ideas for writing a good paragraph. Also, you can follow the steps while writing the best and engaging paragraph of your story as mentioned below. Your topic sentence must be your first sentence and consist of information that increase the credibility score. In case of fiction writing project, you will give all details that builds a specific idea that continues till reaching the other paragraphs. Set up the best narrative story and your ideas must be collective with the coherency element of your body paragraphs. Start your paragraph with central focus and it must be your core aim. There must be a relative flow between your writing your paragraphs. Create each paragraph as it boldly highlights the author's point of view and convince your reader to believe or envision your message.

What Are the Different Types of Paragraphs?

You cannot only format it in a short descriptive form but also in a long form. There are different types of paragraphs that you can write as per the writing requirement. Don't try to separate points while completing paragraphs as it is the major blunder that most students do. Make your literature easy as much as you can. Don't follow a single way every time; consider your writing from multiple angles. Use different paragraphs, follow all writing paragraph rules then, conveying message won't be difficult to your readers. Now, it is time to learn a few types of paragraphs that you will have a variety to write world's best seller writing material in the market. Descriptive form of paragraphs – It has four rules. First, convey information with subtle description of something. Second, making paragraph powerful for readers. Third, get reader's emotional response. Finally, enhance text's dynamics. You can skip grammar rules due to imagery. Expository – If you are amateur in related topic, writing such paragraphs are not easy. Explain how things work and how useful it is for readers. You must have specific knowledge for this. Material must be intuitive that let readers learn something valuable including you. After all, teachers are also learners.

The Main Idea

A paragraph should tell the reader about one idea. This is called the main idea. If you have more than one idea, you must start a new paragraph. In the idea box below you will find ten ideas or topics. You must match those ideas/topics with the lists below. Choose the best idea/topic that matches the list best.

Every paragraph has sentences that go in a special order. These sentences work together to create the main idea or the point. Each sentence must relate to the main idea. If they do not, then the paragraph is confusing and does not make sense. Listed below are main ideas in bold face lettering. Underneath is a list of ideas. Place a line through each idea that does not match the main idea.

Below is an excerpt from a fairy tale. Rewrite the paragraph adding at least 5 sentences that do not relate to the main idea of the paragraph. Trade with your classmates and see if they can identify and cross out the sentences that do not relate.

The purpose of a definitive paragraph is to define something through the use of the five senses. When things are defined, it helps others gain a deeper understanding of our writing. While you may be tempted to rely on a dictionary for this exercise, do not use one. The idea is for you to use your imagination in descriptively defining the ideas and objects below.

Description Prescription

One kind of paragraph is called the descriptive paragraph. A descriptive paragraph creates an image of a person, place, thing, or idea using the five senses. When describing something in writing, you must view what you are describing as a photograph in your mind. You must add what you see as well as what you hear, smell, taste, and touch. A descriptive paragraph should create a vivid picture in the readers mind. Using the topics below, write a descriptive paragraph. Be sure to use the five senses in your descriptions!

Opinion Paragraph; What do You Think?

When you think of an opinion paragraph you might wonder; "Isn't that the same thing as a persuasive paragraph?". While opinion paragraphs and persuasive paragraphs share some similarities, they are very different. Opinion paragraphs are meant to make a p The writer states what they think and feel about a subject, and then supports those points with reasons for having such an opinion. However, the writer does not try to convince the reader that his/her point is correct. A paragraph is a series of sentences that all focus on a particular theme or topic. Most well written paragraphs are planned out well ahead of time. They all start with a topic sentence. The topic sentence is most often the first sentence that is written, but it can carry over to the second sentence. As we progress through the paragraph, supporting sentences are written to back up the assertions made by the topic sentence. It is all finished off by the concluding sentence that attempts to sum up all the thoughts. This selection of worksheets will help students focus on writing solid paragraphs that meet all of these standards that we have presented.

How to Write Paragraphs Well

Paragraphs cannot be written by robots; well written paragraphs are dynamic and engage the readers. The first step is to brainstorm and decide on your main topic for the paragraph. After you decide on a topic, jot down what the goal of the paragraph is. What do you want the reader to come away with?

Once you have an idea of what you want to write start to develop a topic sentence. This sentence should stress your main idea and follow it up with supporting evidence or sentence stress. Your topic sentence should be written clearly and not leave a lot to the imagination. After starting off with your topic sentence you will need to give examples of more points that build on what was asserted by your topic sentence. Any facts or evidence that you have should be stated here. After you state your facts or evidence, you need to help the reader make sense of that information. This could be as simple as summing up the facts or even writing an opinion statement. Readers need to understand why those facts should be important to them. We finish this all off by taking our time and writing a well thought out conclusion statement. This should not only include the topic sentence, but all the supporting points as well. This conclusion statement should also elude to the next paragraph.
