Line Tracing By Age

Line tracing is predominantly for little ones as they learn how to write. It’s therefore perfect for toddlers, preschoolers, and kindergartners. Your child’s age and skill level will depend on which tracing lines worksheets you offer.

2 Year Olds:  Focus mainly on straight lines. Encourage your little one to draw lines from left to right.

3 Year Olds: Offer tracing worksheets with straight, curved, and zigzag lines.

4-5 Year Olds: Offer more advanced line tracing worksheets with circles, etc.

Helpful Tips To Follow When Offering Line Tracing Worksheets

  • Encourage your child to trace lines from left to right;
  • Try to keep it fun. If your little one is getting frustrated, take a break;
  • Keep your little one motivated by supplementing your line tracing project with related projects. For example, if he/she is tracing worksheets with a farm theme, sing farm songs like Old Macdonald Had A Farm;
  • Choose a time of day when your little one is relaxed;
  • Offer rewards when he/she is finished. Rewards can be stickers, verbal encouragement, gold stars on “chore chart”, or whatever you know your child will enjoy.

Tracing Lines Worksheets (Free Printable Line Tracing!)

Before your children can write letters, they need to master tracing. Grab the free tracing lines worksheets to get your children writing well.

As parents, we just kind of take for granted that we can pick up a pencil and write.

But it’s not that easy for a lot of children. Especially if your child is neurodivergent or has other fine motor skills challenges, learning to write can be a big undertaking.

That’s why tracing lines worksheets can be so helpful. They give your child and you a concrete way to practice the building blocks of writing.

So read about why and how to use tracing lines worksheet and grab some free printables in this post.

What are Tracing Lines?

Tracing lines are lines that your child will use to practice tracing. They are usually found on a worksheet and children often use a writing implement, like a crayon or marker to trace.

Tracing lines are often dashed or dotted. This visual gives your child a prompt to trace the line to make it whole.

However, tracing can also be developed with gray lines. Some occupational therapists and handwriting programs prefer to use a solid gray line.

Their theory is that children don’t automatically understand that the dotted lines represent a solid line. Gray lines help children see the shape or letter as a whole.

How does Tracing Develop?

There is a natural progression of writing skills. Your child won’t be ready to trace letters until they can master certain pre-writing skills.

This is the progression of pre-writing skills

  • vertical lines (2-3 years old)
  • horizontal lines (2.5 -3 years old)
  • circle (2.5 – 3 years old)
  • cross (3.5 – 4 years old)
  • square (4 – 5 years old)
  • diagonal lines (4.5 – 5 years old)
  • X shape (5 – 6 years old)
  • triangle (5 -6 years old)

The progression of developing independence with these skills is:

  • First, a child imitates as an adult draws or traces.
  • Next, the child can copy a model
  • Last, the child can write the shape independently.

Why is Tracing Important for Preschoolers?

Tracing lines are important for preschoolers for several reasons:

  • handwriting strokes
  • fine motor skills
  • hand control
  • visual-spatial skills
  • focus and concentration

Handwriting strokes

Tracing lines helps children develop the basic strokes needed for handwriting. Letters are made of a series of vertical, horizontal, and diagonal lines and curves.

By tracing these lines, your child is getting practice in making those letters.

Fine motor skills

Fine motor skills involves using hands and wrists to make small movements. These movements need to be more exact than gross motor skills like running and jumping.

Tracing helps strengthen fine motor skills by activating all the muscles in the hands and wrists. This in turn will help your child when they stack blocks, tie their shoes, or search for page 42 in a textbook.

Pencil control

Pencil control is the prewriting skill where a child can control a writing implement to form a line or object accurately. Being about to control a pencil or another writing implement to form lines and letters takes a lot of practice.

Visual-spatial skills

Visual-spatial skills include the ability to see how lines and shapes occupy space on a piece of paper. Children need to see how lines and shapes relate to one another in order to write and read properly.

Tracing lines help children practice visual-spatial skills by looking at the lines and shapes and recreating them within a defined space.

Focus and concentration

Focus is narrowing attention to one thing and blocking out distractions. Concentration is sustaining that attention for a period of time.

Some people argue that preschoolers should just play and not do seatwork like tracing lines. But one of the benefits is learning to focus and concentrate on non-preferred activities for a very short period of time.

Can 3-year-olds use tracing lines worksheets?

Yes, these are great tracing line worksheets for 3-year-olds. If you look at the progression chart above, three-year-olds can make horizontal and vertical lines, circles, and crosses.

Some of the other lines might be too advanced for your three-year-old so just hold onto them until your child’s fine motor skills develop a bit more.

These tracing lines worksheets are excellent for four-year-olds. They review prior skills that most four-year-olds have mastered but also demonstrate new skills for your preschool child.

But all in all, these are great printable tracing lines worksheets for 3-year-olds.

Types of Tracing Lines Worksheets for 4 year old

Not all tracing lines are exactly the same. This is because we use a variety of strokes when writing letters, numbers, and when drawing pictures.

These are some common types of tracing lines:

  • long horizontal lines
  • short horizontal lines
  • long vertical lines
  • short vertical lines
  • diagonal lines from left to right
  • diagonal lines from right to left
  • bumpy lines that scoop
  • wavy lines that peak
  • zig-zag lines
  • geometric shapes: circles, squares, triangles

How to Use Tracing Lines Worksheets

You probably think: it’s easy to use tracing lines worksheets. Just give them to my kid.

Not so fast.

One of my children’s OTs explained this to me. You need to follow the progression of tracing skills listed above:

  • the adult models
  • the child imitates and then copies
  • finally the child can do it independently.

So here’s how to use tracing lines worksheets:

  • You need to model how to trace first for your child.
  • So print two copies: one for you to use and one for your child to mimic how you traced.
  • Let your child choose a writing implement.
  • Demonstrate on the worksheet where to start.
  • Show your child how to trace using a verbal prompt like “up, down” or “circle around.”
  • Give your child the opportunity to trace.
  • Praise their progress with a comment like, “You’re working hard.”

Make sure you are offering positive feedback that focuses on effort rather than achievement. It’s unlikely that your child is going to master it right away.

Looking for some free line tracing worksheets for your preschool kids or kindergarten kids?

But these printables aren’t all about fun, there is a very important skill being taught.

Little learners need to develop the fine motor control, hand-eye coordination, and visual-spatial skills to accomplish this task.  

Some kids will take to this first step quickly and soar on to other writing skills. Others will need a lot more practice and encouragement to move on to writing letters.

But stick with it because tracing is a foundational skill that will help your child in so many future areas. Whether it is tracing to learn proper letter formation or shape tracing for math, this skill is going to keep coming up.

Line Tracing Worksheet - 1

Have your student help each butterfly find its way to the flower. 

Provide lots of verbal encouragement and make sure they know you are not expecting perfection. 

But do tell your student that slow, small movements will help them much more than rushed work. 

Finish by coloring each of the butterflies and flowers in bright colors.

Line Tracing Worksheet - 2

Does your kid like a good race?

Tell them to take these go-karts for a spin!

Trace the lines from left to right to the waving flags to help the cars win the race!

Consider getting out some toy cars and having a race of your own.

Line Tracing Worksheet - 3

Here is another horizontal line worksheet that is perfect for your preschool or kindergartener.

To help the monkey get a banana, your student will have to trace the line from left to right!

Afterward, color in each of the images for some more fun.

Which silly monkey is your kid’s favorite?

It’s time to take to the sky!

Have your student trace these curved, diagonal lines to help these jets reach the sky!

This will be slightly more challenging than the straight lines, so encourage your little learners to take their time and do their best.

These short vertical lines are a little bit shorter and therefore easier for kids to manage.

Your student will love adding the sticks to each of the popsicles! Encourage them to color them in all different flavors after completing the sheet.

It wouldn’t hurt to have a real popsicle afterwards!

Uh, oh! The bears are coming for your picnic baskets! 

Can your student help each bear snag a tasty snack from the baskets?

These vertical lines are longer and a little more of a challenge. 

Regular pencils were not necessarily made for small hands, so consider getting a proper pencil grip for better pencil control.

If your child doesn’t like it or it feels awkward in their hand, try using a chunky pencil instead. 

Having the correct writing tool may make all the difference in the work they are able to do.

Line Tracing Worksheet - 7

Enough of the straight lines, let’s take a pirate adventure with some jagged, wavy, zigzag lines!

Your kids will have a blast helping each of these swash-buckling pirates find their treasure.

Ask them which pirates are their favorite.

I am a really big fan of sheet protectors or dry erase pockets . Kids love to use them because it means they can be trusted with dry erase markers (be smart and invest in the washable ones ).

Protectors are particularly useful with these printable tracing worksheets. 

You only have to print them once, and then you can repeat the fun activities over and over again. If your kid makes a mistake, you can just wipe it clean and start over. No mess, no fuss!

If your kid enjoys this pirate activity, they can do it over and over again without stressing your printer. 

Line Tracing Worksheet - 8

This would be a great activity to do while you’re learning about animals.

Ask your child to connect each animal to it’s own kind. Which animal is their favorite? 

Ask them which line was the most difficult. Which one was easy? Erase and have them redo one or two if necessary. 

Encourage them to move the paper as they trace, if that helps.

Things are getting a little screwy around here!

Can your student trace all of these wild lines? 

As an added challenge, can they make their own dotted line for you to trace?

If you have a preschool-age kid who just wants to scribble and they dissolve into tears when you try to coax them into tracing a line…consider tabling this skill for a few months…or longer.

It’s not worth it to force them beyond their developmental abilities. You will get frustrated and they will burn out. 

Early education is important, but when done incorrectly, it can be harmful to a kid’s confidence, self-talk, and natural love of learning.

Line Tracing Worksheet - 10

These lines are like rolling ocean waves. 

Have your student trace each of the lines and then have them color the ocean creatures swimming through the water. 

They will find a seahorse, fish, whale, turtle, and octopus in the waves.

For an added challenge, ask the child to make their own wavy lines between the dotted lines.

What kid doesn’t love puppies?

To complete, have your student carefully trace all of the lines to get the puppy to its favorite toy.

If the child struggles, it might help to turn the paper so it is horizontal.

Lastly, color all the puppies and toys.

This is the final worksheet in this preschool worksheet packet.

All of the snakes need to be behind bars. Their crime is…well, just being a snake.

The first window has simple lines to trace, but the next one has a missing bar.

Each window gets more and more challenging until the student has to draw all the lines without help from dotted lines.

This is a great last activity before bridging into more challenging exercises.

Finish by coloring the snakes.

I decided to make each sheet black and white to save you ink. Plus as an added activity, your child can color in the page after they trace the lines!

Straight Lines

Zigzag lines, curved lines, helpful tips, additional activities, terms of use.

Tracing activities are a great way for little ones to practice pencil control, hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills. This collection includes horizontal lines, vertical lines, and diagonal lines. Along with curvy lines, wavy lines, and zigzags!

Your child can draw the lines on the flowers to create the stem and from the butterflies to the flowers. Then the straight path the squirrel takes to get to the acorns along with the lines behind the shooting star!

On the following worksheets your child can follow the zigzag lines to draw lightning coming down from a cloud and the path a bear takes to get to the berries. Then the journey a baby sea turtle takes to find the ocean waves and a fox running back to the forest!

On the next worksheets, young kids can trace the wavy lines to follow a duck as it swims in the pond and to follow a bee as it flies back to the hive. Along with tracing the path a snail takes to get to the leaf and a snowflake as it falls through the air.

  • Start Small - instead of giving your child the entire sheet, cut each worksheet into four sections. This lets your child practice one line at a time.
  • Use a Button - a great way to start building fine motor skills is to practice moving a button along the lines instead of a pencil. Simply place a button on the worksheet and using your finger move the button along the line.
  • Make them Reusable - Laminate or place each sheet within a clear plastic protector like this one. Then your child can use dry erase markers to trace over each line. Once done, simply wipe the sheet clean.
  • Go Slow - Every child is different and even though lines are simple shapes, they take a lot of work for young children to trace. If your child is becoming frustrated, take a break from the activity until they are ready to try again.

Before writing letters and/or numbers can happen for your child, she must begin with straight and curved lines first.

Thus, it is important to work on tracing dotted lines worksheets. 

Working on basic lines and curves will help your child have an easier time writing letters and numbers in the future. 

However, I suggest doing more practical activities to help your child develop his fine motor skills before even working on tracing activities.

Practical Fine Motor Skills Activities for Children

1.hand exercises.

Have your child do open and close movements with his hands. This simple movement exercise will help him develop his writing muscles. It is also a great warm-up before doing fine motor activities. 

2. Play with playdough

Playdough is a truly versatile toy. It fosters creativity and improves fine motor skills at the same time. 

Possibilities are endless with this moldable toy. You can do free-hand molding or you can choose to have a more structured play by encouraging your child to follow a fixed shape or pattern.

3. Do lacing

My nephew loves lacing toys . He is fascinated with the animal shapes and he enjoys threading the stick through the holes.

I love lacing toys, too, for the same reasons. In addition, I highly recommend lacing toys because they are great for improving children’s fine motor skills.

And it can also be used for other knowledge objectives such as making patterns, learning about shapes and colors, counting, one-to-one correspondence and more!

4. Play with fridge magnets

Your little one will definitely have fun with this activity. As he moves the magnets around the fridge, your child gets to exercise his fingers, hands and wrist muscles. 

In turn, he’ll have strong muscles that could help him as he writes in the future. 

5. Get wet with sponge and water spray

These two household items are wonderful for fine motor development. 

Squeezing the sponge and spraying/watering plants are two outdoor activities that are proven fun and helpful in improving your child’s hand muscles. 

6. Color, color, color

At the beginning of your child’s adventure to using coloring materials, I would suggest that you just let your child do his thing. 

Let him go beyond the lines and use odd color combinations. The important thing here is he’s familiarising himself with how to use coloring/writing tools. 

Eventually, as your child becomes better at controlling the crayon, his coloring quality will also improve. 

Now that your child displays strong hand and wrist muscles, it is time to move on to more complex fine motor activities.

Tips for Using Your Tracing Lines Worksheets

To prepare little fingers for writing, first work on tracing lines and shapes. This seemingly simple activity will help develop fine motor control, which can be a challenge for some children.

  • Start by having your child trace the lines with their finger. Guide their hand if needed.
  • Next, show your child how to properly hold a crayon or wide pencil if they don’t already know how to. 
  • Demonstrate how to trace the lines slowly, aiming for accuracy over speed. Then let them try, focusing on precision. As your child improves their accuracy, they can try to work more quickly.

Are you trying to teach your little student the letter f?

If that’s the case, I’ve got you covered! This article contains over 55 pages to help your child master the letter F in uppercase and lowercase!

These worksheets cover most aspects of learning the letter F, from coloring and letter and line tracing to letter and number recognition.

As a homeschooled mom, I recognize that many moms have more than one little one at a time; that is why although most worksheets are for preschoolers and kindergarteners, I’ve also included some advanced activities like word searches, and I spy games for 1st and 2nd graders.
