Volunteering in Winnipeg

Volunteer and make a real difference now.

Volunteers are at the heart and soul of everything we do! Every year, thousands of people give their incredible gifts of service to United Way Winnipeg. We simply would not be what we are without them!

volunteer opportunities winnipeg

Want to volunteer with us?

There are lots of different ways to make a difference today!

Host a collection drive

Unite your friends, family, neighbours, or colleagues and gather essential items for people struggling to meet their basic needs.

Register your drive, and we’ll send you promotional materials to help raise awareness.

A United Way Winnipeg agency partner will make sure these items get safely to the homes of Winnipeggers who could use a helping hand.

Period Power Collection Drive

volunteer opportunities winnipeg

Now until May 28, 2024

Right now, Winnipeggers are missing school or work because they can’t afford menstrual hygiene supplies.

But it doesn’t have to be this way.

Every year, we invite workplaces, unions, and caring people like YOU to help us eliminate period poverty, so every Winnipegger can fully participate in our community.

Period Power collection drive

United Way Winnipeg and the Winnipeg Labour Council are teaming up once again to gift period products to people in our community from low-income households.

From  May 1 – 28,  we’re collecting NEW, unopened packs of menstrual pads, tampons, cups, and other menstrual products.

Please drop off your donations at one of these two locations:

UNITED WAY WINNIPEG 580 Main Street Hours: 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Free parking in the back lot. We’re currently closed to the public; please use the buzzer next to the glass double doors upon arrival.

WINNIPEG LABOUR COUNCIL  275 Broadway – Union Centre Hours: 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. Questions? Please call 204-942-0522 or email [email protected].

If you prefer, you can  donate funds online  rather than items. Either way, you’re making a REAL difference!

Host your own collection drive!

Show your love for our community by hosting a Period Power collection drive through your workplace, union, or group!

Please drop off your donations by May 28 at one of the above locations.

Questions?  Contact Madelaine Dwyer, United Way Winnipeg’s Labour Director at (204) 924-4261 or  [email protected]

Thank you for giving and working united!

Did you know?

Canadians can spend up to $6,000 on menstrual hygiene products throughout their lifetime. In rural communities, the same products can cost up to $12,000.

For so many people in our city, menstrual products are unaffordable—especially during this time of rising costs and economic uncertainty.

That means many Winnipeggers living on a low income end up missing school or work because of a period. And if you’re experiencing homelessness, it’s even harder getting monthly menstrual supplies.

Let’s work united to leave no Winnipegger behind!

Create care kits from home

Give Winnipeggers living on a low income a helping hand with the essentials.

Basic items make a world of difference for Winnipeggers living on a low income. You can help ease some pressure on individuals and families by assembling and donating personal care kits, activity kits, or family meal kits. We’ll give you a list of supplies, assembly instructions, and directions on how to donate completed kits to an agency partner in your community.

When your kits are ready to be delivered, contact us , and we’ll help connect you with a United Way Winnipeg agency partner in your area, or you can bring them to:

United Way Winnipeg 580 Main Street 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Free parking is available in the parking lot behind our building.

We are currently closed to the public. Please use the buzzer next to the door when you arrive.

Volunteer your time and talent

Looking for other ways to make a positive impact? Below are some opportunities that might suit your skills and interests while making a meaningful difference in our community.

We’ll help you create customized virtual or in-person employee engagement activities to engage, connect, and inspire your teams throughout the year. You can even focus on a need that meets your organization’s vision for a better Winnipeg!

Light a Spark

Spark brings together community-based organizations with people who want to use their professional skills for social good. Spark makes high-impact matches based on skills, experience, personalities, and causes that both volunteers and agencies are passionate about.

Volunteer FAQs

What do volunteers do at Harvest?

A: We are focused on sorting and packing food for Harvest Hampers which are distributed to more than 360 organizations across Manitoba. We also pack kits for weekly school and daycare programs, and our Meals2Go weekend food for hungry kids.

Can groups (corporate/community/school) volunteer?

A: Yes! We would love to have your group volunteer in our warehouse. Your group will have a designated space to meet and store your belongings. A Harvest Crew member will take you on a talk & tour of our facility to learn how you are making a difference in the lives of Manitobans! Next, we will do a team building exercise to warm up the group for work before we take you out to our warehouse to work at one of our stations. The job will be determined on the day but could include: sorting food, packing Harvest Hampers, debulking large product into smaller quantities.

What is the maximum group size?

A: At this time, we are limiting volunteer shifts to 25 individuals.

Is your building and warehouse accessible?

A: Yes, our main entrance, volunteer rooms, and washrooms are accessible. Please notify our Volunteer Services Crew for special accommodations so we can have a workstation in our warehouse ready for you.

What COVID-19 safety protocols are in place?

  • Face masks are encouraged and available in all Harvest facilities.
  • Handwashing is required before and after the volunteer shift. Hand sanitizer is available onsite.
  • We will provide volunteers with disposable gloves to wear during their shift.

Can I complete my school community service hours at Harvest?

A: Yes. Please apply on our Individual Volunteer page.

What should I wear?

A:  All volunteers are required to wear closed-toed shoes.   We recommend wearing comfortable clothing you do not mind getting dirty. The warehouse tends to be chilly in the winter and hot in the summer, so layered clothing is suggested. Avoid loose-hanging items (long necklaces, scarves, etc.) and pull back any long hair.

Is there an age restriction?

A: Volunteers must be 14 years of age or older excluding Family Night shifts. Anyone under the age of 14 must be accompanied by a chaperone for the duration of their shift.

Is there a minimum time requirement to volunteer?

A: Volunteer shifts are 2-3 hours in duration. A long-term commitment is welcome but not required.

Does Harvest have a parking area for volunteers?

A: Parking is available for staff, visitors, and volunteers. It is located on Winnipeg Avenue across from our Warehouse at 1085 Winnipeg Avenue (between the Jamaican Heritage Centre and the Carpet Outlet). You may report to our front door for sign-in.

How do I book my shifts?

A: Once your application has been approved, you will be sent details of how to log in to your account & book your shifts online. If you do not have access to a computer or mobile device you may contact our Volunteer Services department to book your shifts.

How do I contact the Volunteer Services Crew?

The Canadian Cancer Society is looking for volunteer drivers for the program, which offers rides to Manitobans with cancer who need help getting to and from their appointments.

“The best part of volunteering with Wheels of Hope is meeting the variety of very interesting clients who we provide rides for,” said volunteer John Carey. “They are always so appreciative of the service.”

‘The best part of volunteering with Wheels of Hope is meeting the variety of very interesting clients who we provide rides for,’ says volunteer John Carey. (Mike Deal / Free Press)

People use the service for a variety of reasons. Some may not be able to operate a vehicle after their treatment, others don’t have a vehicle or driver’s licence and some don’t have friends or family they can rely on during workday hours.

“Many have mentioned they would have had a very difficult time getting to their scheduled appointments without Wheels of Hope,” Carey said. “The gratitude they have for Wheels of Hope and CancerCare Manitoba overall is very inspiring.”

The 62-year-old retiree was looking for a volunteer opportunity to fill some of his free time when he found out about Wheels of Hope in November 2022.

He liked the idea of a volunteer commitment that would get him out and about in the community and where every day would be different.

Carey worked in the automotive industry for 35 years before he and his brother sold their car dealership in 2016.

He sees parallels between his career and his voluntarism: both involve working with an organization that consists of amazing people who are dedicated to providing the best service possible to the clients they serve.

“While no one really wants to be a client of CancerCare Manitoba, this amazing organization does an outstanding job of making the journey go as smoothly as possible with the support of Wheels of Hope under sometimes very difficult circumstances,” Carey said.

Swim Manitoba needs volunteers to join its board as directors at large. Those elected will commit to upholding the board and committee code of conduct, reflecting the organization’s dedication to representing Manitoba’s diverse community. The role promises experience in governance, policy development and event planning. It requires a commitment to evening and weekend (virtual or in-person) board meetings, with a term of three years. Background checks are required, with costs reimbursed. Email [email protected] by May 24.

First Tee — Prairies needs assistant golf coaches to help lead in the delivery of First Tee programming. Beausejour Daylily Gardens needs “garden angels.” Volunteers must have a passion for the great outdoors and not be afraid to get their hands dirty. The volunteers will adopt a section of the garden and be given all the necessary tools and guidance. The program is designed to accommodate the schedules of volunteers. Must be 16 or older. Small groups of family and friends, and larger corporate or school groups, are encouraged to apply. Apply at [email protected] or 204-266-1311 by Oct. 31.

The Canadian Red Cross needs volunteers. The Red Cross can show you how to help when disaster strikes. Go to http://wfp.to/0pE , email [email protected] or call 1-844-818-2155.

Drivers often shuttle the same clients to their appointments on multiple occasions and get a chance to build a rapport with them in the process.

For Carey, it’s always a special day when he drives a client to their final treatment and they get to ring the bell symbolizing the conclusion of that particular treatment.

“It’s nice to have played a small role in helping to get the clients to their appointments so they can receive the life-saving treatments provided by CancerCare,” Carey said.

Volunteers must be willing to undergo a criminal background check and provide references.

They need a driver’s licence with three or fewer demerits and operate a smoke-free vehicle. Wheels of Hope also owns a fleet of vehicles volunteers can use.

“To be able to give back a small amount of time to allow the wheels of this amazing organization to keep rolling is definitely rewarding.”

Community group's river boat to patrol Winnipeg waterways to help people in need

Community204 buys boat to offer food, harm reduction supplies to people living along city's riverbanks.

A boat sits in a parking lot.

Social Sharing

A Winnipeg community group hopes to provide support for people who live along the city's riverbanks via its newly purchased boat.

The non-profit organization CommUnity204, which aims to support homeless communities in Winnipeg, will soon launch a river watch program, where a team will patrol the Red River and offer help to those who need it.

"We're making sure that we have basic needs for folks that might need it," said Daniel Hidalgo, the organization's founder and a former Winnipeg firefighter with water rescue training.

The boat will carry food, water, harm reduction supplies and safety equipment. Hidalgo said the idea was inspired by Drag the Red, a community volunteer organization that uses a boat to search the Red River for signs of missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls.

It formed in 2014, following the discovery of 15-year-old Tina Fontaine's body in the Red River.

  • New 'one of a kind' boat will help Drag the Red continue search for missing in Winnipeg rivers
  • 'We're all doing heart work,' say patrol groups who joined Unity Walk in downtown Winnipeg

"When we were out on the river during our time supporting Drag the Red … there [were] also a lot of other risks that were presenting themselves," Hidalgo told CBC's Chloe Friesen on Up to Speed on Friday .

"We were encountering a lot of the encampment folks fulfilling some of their basic needs in the water, whether that was consuming and bathing or just being in the water, or maybe even too close."

Hidalgo said they noticed other safety concerns, like children playing unattended too close to the water.

The team is made up of 22 staff, each with their own boating licence. Hidalgo said they hope to work alongside the city's first responders when situations are beyond their scope.

A man wearing a black hoodie and a hat is pictured in front of a colourful Indigenous painting.

The group, which includes staff who work with at-risk youth, also plans to bring students aboard for river tours to give them a chance to learn about advocacy and volunteerism.

"It just allows them to form connections and to fulfil that gap within themselves, which is often the longing and desire to belong to something, something positive," said Hidalgo, who also co-founded the Sabe Peace Walkers patrol group .

The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responded to 35 calls for service so far this year for incidents within about 25 metres of the Red or Assiniboine rivers, according to data from a city spokesperson.

Last year, there were 238 calls.

The calls were related to a variety of incidents, including fires, water rescues or medical emergencies, the city spokesperson said.

CommUnity204's boat is expected to hit the water in the next couple of weeks.

City issues vacate order of Portage Avenue apartment building due to unsafe condition

Winnipeg, MB – The City of Winnipeg has issued an order to the property owner of 2440 Portage Ave. to immediately vacate the building under the Winnipeg Building By-law and the Emergency Management By-law due to its unsafe condition.

We were recently notified of a third-party engineering inspection of the building that uncovered severe deterioration of its structure in various locations, necessitating the vacate order.

The City is in contact with the property owner regarding requirements under this order, including:

  • Immediately vacating and ceasing any occupancy of the property
  • Prohibiting entry to the property until it is determined by the City that it is safe to enter
  • Ensuring continuous 24/7 monitoring of the property, and immediately advising the City of any change in the structural stability of the property

It’s expected that further orders will be issued to the property owner with respect to the specific actions necessary to address the unsafe conditions.

City officials will be going door-to-door to advise tenants of the order and to ensure the building is vacated.

The City is establishing a reception centre to help residents who do not have other options to find temporary accommodations and connect them with available resources and supports.

The timeline for repairs, inspections, and re-occupancy are not yet known; however, it’s anticipated that it may take several months to address the identified structural issues.

Building tenants are advised to contact the property owner / building manager for more information.

City officials will also be going door-to-door advising residents in neighbouring properties along Assiniboine Crescent that they are on an evacuation watch, and to prepare to evacuate if and when the structural condition of the apartment building necessitates it.
