Pros and Cons

Integrations.

OpenProject integrates with GitLab, Jira, Microsoft Project, Toggl and Slack. App integrations are limited depending on your plan. All paid plans integrate with OneDrive, Nextcloud and GitHub.

Why I chose OpenProject

I picked OpenProject because of its abundance of advanced features, active community and versatility. The free plan also offers a pretty extensive feature set, and you’ll also get a 14-day free trial to test out the paid plans. The tradeoff is that support is limited, and you must upgrade to the more expensive plans if you think your team will need more customer service.

GanttProject: Best for ease of use

GanttProject logo.

Although the GanttProject interface looks a bit like an old-school Excel spreadsheet, the open-source project management application is a powerful tool for scheduling and tracking projects. The more traditional style design may also be easier for certain team members to navigate.

GanttProject allows users to break down multiple projects into tasks, assign resources, set dependencies between tasks and track progress. It is available for Windows, Mac and Linux operating systems and is licensed under the GNU GPL.

See how GanttProject compares to our list of the best Gantt chart software .

GanttProject is completely free to download and use. However, upon download, users can optionally contribute $5 or more to the project development.

  • Available for Windows, Linux and macOS.
  • Users can edit their project offline, then sync when they’re back online.
  • Resource allocation available.
  • Milestone tracking and project progress tracking included.

GanttProject does not currently offer any integrations.

Why I chose GanttProject

I chose GanttProject because of its simple learning curve, which makes it a good choice for beginners who are new to open-source project management software. I also like that GanttProject is free forever to download, with no limits on the number of users or projects, making it a great choice for teams on a budget.

ProjectLibre: Best low-cost alternative to Microsoft Project

ProjectLibre logo.

With over 7 million downloads in 193 countries, ProjectLibre is distributed under the Common Public Attribution License (CPAL), which allows users to use, modify and distribute the software freely. This desktop-based project management tool describes itself as the #1 alternative to Microsoft Project and is a cross-platform application that works on Windows, Linux and macOS.

ProjectLibre allows users to create and manage tasks, schedules, budgets and resources for their projects and includes Gantt charts, network diagrams (PERT charts), resource allocation, critical path analysis and many other project management tools.

Available to download for free.

  • Resource histograms help with workload allocation.
  • Network diagrams visualize roadmaps.
  • Resource breakdown structure and work breakdown structure charts.
  • Gantt charts included for free.

ProjectLibre currently integrates with OpenProject only.

Why I chose ProjectLibre

I chose ProjectLibre because it provides a completely free, open-source alternative to Microsoft Project. While the desktop version is more traditionally designed, the ProjectLibre team is also working on releasing a cloud-based version, and you can add yourself to the waitlist for a free trial.

WeKan: Best for kanban boards

Wekan logo.

WeKan is an open-source kanban board tool licensed under MIT, meaning that it’s free to use, modify and distribute. In addition to customizable boards and cards, WeKan offers lists, task management, collaboration tools, task assignments, due dates and notifications.

As an open-source tool, WeKan has a growing community of contributors and users who constantly improve and add new features to the project. It also offers a self-hosted version if you want more control and security.

See how WeKan compares to our list of the best kanban software .

WeKan is free to use.

  • Allows users to customize their own project details.
  • Includes a real-time user interface.
  • Easy-to-use kanban interface with board, list and card views.

An example of the board view in WeKan.

WeKan supports integrations with popular tools like Slack, Google Drive and GitHub.

Why I chose WeKan

I chose WeKan because it offers an open-source kanban software alternative as well as the option to self-host. Its project management features aren’t as robust as some of the other alternatives on this list, but that also lowers the learning curve and makes it less intimidating for beginners to master.

Taiga: Best for small businesses

Taiga logo.

Initially released in 2014 and licensed under the GNU Affero General Public License, Taiga is a desktop-based open-source project management platform that allows small teams to manage multiple projects, tasks and workflows. It is designed to be lightweight and easy to use, making it a great choice for Agile project management. An example of a project in Taiga.

The app integrates with popular development tools such as GitHub and GitLab. It also integrates with Slack, and you can connect it to even more apps via Zapier.

Why I chose Taiga

I chose Taiga because its cloud-hosted version supports unlimited projects and users, making it an excellent option for small businesses, even if they aren’t able to self-host. If your team has Linux and Docker experience, the free self-hosted version is a great alternative to explore as well.

Orangescrum: Best for enterprises

Orangescrum logo.

Licensed under GNU General Public License v3, Orangescrum offers an open-source enterprise edition as well as cloud and on-premises versions to choose from. Orangescrum’s features include task management, project tracking, time tracking, resource management, team collaboration and reporting.

The Orangescrum dashboard provides a bird’s eye view of multiple projects with the capability to drill down and analyze the progress of individual tasks and projects.

See how Orangescrum compares to our list of the best enterprise project management software .

Orangescrum has a free open-source community edition that users can download. For the enterprise edition, prospective buyers can purchase Orangescrum as an on-premises solution or use it via the cloud. Orangescrum discloses the pricing for its cloud plans, but you must contact the sales team to get a quote for the self-hosted plans.

Orangescrum cloud plans:

  • Personal : No cost for one user.
  • Startup : $8 per month billed annually, or $9 billed monthly, for 10 users.
  • Professional : $40 per month billed annually, or $44 billed monthly, for 11 users. Pricing varies by number of users.
  • Enterprise : Contact sales for a custom quote.
  • View project analytics for task, hour and weekly usage reports.

App integrations include Slack, Google Drive, Dropbox, Google Calendar, GitHub, Zapier, LDAP and Outlook. Users can sync and automate data between integrations.

Why I chose Orangescrum

I chose Orangescrum because its many advanced features make it a great choice for enterprises with lots of complex project management. I also like that Orangescrum supports six different languages (Danish, English, French, German, Portuguese and Spanish), a perk for international enterprises with global teams.

Leantime: Best for small teams and startups

Leantime logo.

Leantime is an open-source project management system that combines design thinking, lean methodology and Agile practices into an all-in-one system. It is designed to help startup-minded teams ideate, plan and execute projects effectively from start to finish. While Leantime limits the number of tasks available on its free plan, its affordable pricing plans are on par with other project management software apps.

See how Leantime compares to our list of the best project management software for time tracking .

Leantime offers several pricing plans:

  • Free : No cost for up to 150 tasks and milestones.
  • Essentials : $4 per user per month.
  • Premium : $8 per user per month.
  • Ultimate : $10 per user per month.
  • Enterprise : Contact sales team for a quote.

  • Document manager keeps everything centralized on one platform.
  • LDAP integration and role management.

An example of a to-do list in Leantime.

Leantime connects with Slack, Discord, Mattermost or Zulip.

Why we chose Leantime

I chose Leantime because of its advanced project management features and its incorporation of AI capabilities. I also like that it includes document and file management capabilities and multiple project views to choose from. However, I wish the free version offered more capabilities instead of limiting users to 150 tasks only.

Tuleap: Best for DevOps team

Tuleap logo.

Tuleap is a web-based, open-source software platform designed for project management and collaboration. It is primarily used for software development and is licensed under GNU GPL. Tuleap’s key capabilities include ticketing and bug-tracking, Agile planning, document management, version control, continuous integration and customizable workflow. It can be installed on-premises or used as a cloud-based service.

See how Tuleap compares to our list of the best project management software for developers .

Tuleap can be deployed on-premises and in the cloud. Your fee depends on your selected plan and the number of users. Note that Tuleap is based in Europe and therefore lists its pricing in euros, so the pricing may fluctuate slightly for American customers due to currency exchange rates.

  • Community : No cost.
  • Expert : Approximately $35 per user per month billed annually (minimum 25 users) for on-premises hosts. Special pricing is available for 50 or more users — contact the sales team for details.
  • myTuleap : Approximately $14 per user per month billed annually (up to 30 users) for cloud hosts.

Tuleap integrates with GitLab, Jira Software, Eclipse, Mattermost and Bugzilla. The Tuleap Git integration with Jenkins allows online code review with pull requests.

Why I chose Tuleap

I chose Tuleap because it offers both cloud and on-premise deployment options for the ultimate flexibility. Its specific set of features also makes it particularly well suited to software development teams that are trying to turn around projects with fast deadlines.

Key features of open-source project management software

Look out for the following key capabilities when shopping for an open-source project management tool.

Source code availability and community support

The source code for open-source software is usually available on GitHub, allowing users to contribute to the project and modify it to their specific needs. They can also submit bug fixes and request features. Before selecting a tool, check the project’s community to see how active it is, how often the software is updated, and how easily modifiable the source code is.

Project planning and task management

The best open-source project management software should provide planning tools to create project roadmaps, Gantt charts and resource allocation. It should offer task management capabilities so users can prioritize tasks, set deadlines and track progress. The software should also provide an easy-to-use interface for creating, assigning and tracking tasks.

Cost savings

Open-source project management software is often free or very low cost. This makes it an attractive option for businesses looking for a cost-effective solution for their project management needs. If you need completely free project management software, you’ll find multiple open-source options to choose from.

Collaboration

Open-source project management software should provide collaboration features such as team messaging, file sharing and real-time updates. The software should also allow for easy feedback and approval processes so your team doesn’t constantly have to switch between platforms to move the project forward.

Resource management and time tracking

The open-source project management software should provide tools for managing resources such as people, equipment and materials, as well as reporting options to increase efficiency. It should also provide time tracking so team members can track their time spent on tasks and view their usage reports.

Pros and cons of using open-source software for project management

Open-source software offers a high degree of customizability, so you can tailor the software to meet your team’s needs. This also means that open source project management is highly scalable, so it can grow with your business as it evolves from a startup to a larger company.

Open-source software is also incredibly affordable: Many open-source project management software offer a free version, and the ones that don’t keep their pricing plans at a low cost. Most open-source software also have a very active and robust community that contributes to suggestions and updates.

Many open-source software require technical knowledge to implement and customize, especially if you plan to self-host — open-source software doesn’t provide technical support since it’s all run by volunteers. This means you’ll need an IT expert who already has experience with open-source software.

Open-source software may also present hidden costs. Even though the software itself is often free, you might need to make other purchases to support it, such as investing in additional security measures and hiring a software expert who can implement and support the software.

How do I choose the best open-source project management software for my business?

Before choosing open-source project management software, talk with your IT team about the technical challenges of implementing open-source project management software and how you can address them. You should also survey your employees about what they need in project management software.

Once you’ve gathered all the responses, make a list of your must-have and nice-to-have features, as well as your overall budget. If the community editions won’t suffice for your needs, then you might need to upgrade to the enterprise editions, which tend to cost more.

Next, it’s time to engage the community members and, if possible, get on a call to discuss your needs. If you’re looking at a paid version, request a free trial so you can test the tool before committing to a paid plan.

Smaller teams may prefer a less complex tool than what many open-source options have to offer. If that’s the case, check out our list of the top free project management software instead.

Methodology

To choose the best open-source project management tools available on the market, we tested each tool ourselves to get firsthand experience. We evaluated the ease of use, user interface design, community activity and product documentation. We also investigated various project management features, such as project views, resource allocation and time tracking. We looked at user reviews and customer satisfaction ratings during the writing of this review.

Is Open-Source Project Management Software Good for You?

Open-source project management is an effective way to structure your work, connect with teams, identify bugs, and achieve success in the project. And it will be right for you if you need a highly customizable, budget-friendly project management platform.

However, going the open-source way might not work if you don't have a strong technical team to manage the software, fix bugs and issues, and customize it to your needs.

Top 9 Open Source Project Management Software

Top 9 Open Source Project Management Software

Finding the appropriate software may be a game-changer for any business handling several projects in the ever-expanding project management environment, where precision is vital and communication is critical. However, the prohibitive costs of traditional project management software can pose a significant challenge, particularly for small and large enterprises operating on tight budgets. Thankfully, the rise of open-source project management software has ushered in a new era of accessibility and affordability, leveling the playing field for businesses of all sizes. By 2030, the Open Source Project Management Software market is anticipated to be worth USD 14.1 billion, expanding at a CAGR of 10.7% between 2023 and 2030 .

We’ve curated a list of the top 9 open source project management software options that empower businesses without burdening budgets.

What is Open Source Project Management Software?

Open Source Project Management Software refers to project management tools and applications that are developed and distributed with an open-source license. The term “open source” signifies a collaborative approach to software development, emphasizing transparency, community-driven collaboration, and shared knowledge. Unlike proprietary project management software, where the source code is privately owned and accessible only to the company that created it, open-source software encourages collective contributions and improvements from developers and users worldwide.

Open-source project management software offers several key advantages:

  • Transparency: The source code is visible to everyone, ensuring transparency in how the software operates. Users can inspect the code to understand its functionality, which fosters trust and accountability.
  • Customizability: Users can modify the software to suit their specific needs. This flexibility allows companies to tailor the software according to their unique project management requirements, enhancing efficiency and productivity.
  • Community Collaboration: Open source projects thrive on community contributions. Developers and users can collaborate, report issues, suggest enhancements, and work together to improve the software, leading to rapid development and innovation.
  • Cost-Effectiveness: Open-source software is typically free to use. This affordability makes it a great option for businesses and organizations, especially those with limited budgets or nonprofit initiatives.
  • Security: The open nature of the source code permits security vulnerabilities to be identified and fixed promptly by the community, leading to robust and secure software solutions.
  • Longevity: Open-source projects tend to have a longer lifespan because they are not dependent on a single company. The community can maintain and improve the software even if the original developers move on.

Criteria for Selecting Open-Source Project Management Software

Criteria for Selecting Open-Source Project Management Software

When selecting open-source project management software, it’s crucial to consider several fundamental criteria to ensure that the chosen tool aligns with your specific requirements and objectives. Here are the essential factors to consider:

User-Friendly Interface

A user-friendly interface ensures easy navigation and seamless interaction within the software, allowing team members to collaborate efficiently and effectively without the need for extensive training.

Features and Functionality

Evaluating the software’s features and functionality is essential to ensure it aligns with specific project management needs, offering tools like task management, scheduling, reporting, and collaboration features tailored to the organization’s requirements.

Customization Options

Customization options enable businesses to adapt the software to their unique workflows. This flexibility allows for modifying fields, templates, and workflows, ensuring the software aligns perfectly with specific project processes.

Community Support

A robust user community provides valuable resources such as forums, tutorials, and plugins. Active community support indicates ongoing development and ensures access to knowledge, enhancing the overall user experience and problem-solving capabilities.

Security Measures

Security features like user access controls, encryption, and secure authentication methods safeguard sensitive project data, ensuring confidentiality and protecting against unauthorized access or data breaches.

Licensing and Costs

While open-source software is generally free, businesses should consider associated costs such as support packages or premium features. Assessing licensing terms and overall costs helps understand the financial implications and ensures the chosen software aligns with the budget constraints.

Did you know that there are open-source project management tools that do everything the best project management software platforms do, but at a fraction of the cost? Many open-source platforms are also more frequently updated and offer more features than proprietary software. To help, we tested dozens of the best open-source project management software available to bring you this roundup.

Key Takeaways: Open-Source Tool List

  • OpenProject is the best open-source project management tool thanks to a strong feature set, a generous free Community edition and competitive pricing.
  • Many of these open-source project management solutions offer self-hosted and hosted plans. However, some (such as Redmine) are self-host only, which can be challenging to set up.
  • All of the open-source project management software options listed here offer free plans, and most offer free trials, too. If you want to take the software for a spin, you can do so without impacting your budget.

We know that open-source software might not be for everyone, but for those that like the idea of using platforms that can be tweaked to their liking and might save them a large chunk of change, the open-source software route is appealing. If you’re looking for free software that can compete with the big guns, read on, because you’ll like what you see here.

If you want some more functionality, you can read our list of the best cheap project management software . If you have a bit more of a budget, you can find out who the big boys are in our ultimate project management software roundup.

What Makes the Best Open-Source Project Management Software?

A project manager needs software to help them plan, organize, track and execute tasks easily. We have looked for the best open-source software options that offer plenty of workflow management tools, team collaboration and admin features, and free and paid plans. Here’s a quick look at the five platforms we’ll be covering in this roundup, including OpenProject, Redmine, Leantime, MeisterTask and Freedcamp.

Check out our project management courses and grab a limited-time offer. Registration available now!

  • Redmine — Powerful management software with unparalleled support
  • Leantime — User-friendly open-source project management solution
  • MeisterTask — A highly customizable and attractive solution
  • Freedcamp — Cloud-based open-source software that’s a joy to use

As you can see, some strong software options for project management meet our open-source software requirements. OpenProject is the most powerful option here. If you’re very tech-savvy, Redmine is another solid choice. Leantime, MeisterTask and Freedcamp are much more user-friendly than the first two but offer slightly less flexibility.

The 5 Best Open-Source Project Management Solutions

We’ve shared our five favorite open-source project management tools. Now, it’s time to show you why you should consider each platform if you’re looking to break away from more mainstream options like monday.com and Asana or even ClickUp (here’s our ClickUp review ) and Wrike (check out our Wrike review ). Let’s take a closer look at each platform.

1. OpenProject

openproject gantt chart

More details about OpenProject:

  • Pricing : $7.25 per month (one-year plan)
  • Provider website : openproject.com
  • Strong tool selection
  • Exceptional levels of security
  • Clean & functional interface
  • Tricky to learn
  • Few integrations
  • Strange paid plans

OpenProject is a versatile project management system that’s capable of supporting everything from basic tasks to complex agile methodologies and teams. While the user interface isn’t the prettiest, it’s functional and supports multiple projects. The best part is that this platform can be self-hosted for free or, for a fee, can be hosted on highly secure OpenProject servers.

As mentioned, OpenProject is fantastic for agile project management (with the right plan) thanks to its use of agile boards (kanban boards), easy to use Gantt charts and a robust set of team collaboration tools that include basic chat, wikis and forums, document management, unlimited file uploads (files up to 256MB) and meeting tools. There’s even a native time-tracking tool.

Unfortunately, OpenProject isn’t the easiest project management tool to use, but there are a number of resources, including well-written guides and easy-to-follow videos, that will help you find your way. When it comes to tools for multi-project management, OpenProject is worth a look. You can find out more about the features in our full OpenProject review .

One Overview to Rule Them All

While OpenProject isn’t overloaded with many reports for managers to get stuck in, the software provides a work area where managers can see important information at a glance and analyze project progress.

OpenProject’s overview can be customized to your liking. You can add widgets for the Gantt chart, track milestones and time worked, and view your calendar in one place. It’s an incredibly powerful reporting and task management tool that project managers frequently use. The overview tool lets you see exactly where you and your team stand in seconds.

OpenProject homepage

Regarding plans, the free Community edition allows unlimited users and projects, but removes advanced tools and offers limited support. The Basic $7.25 per user per month plan adds an enterprise add-on (advanced tools) and comes with best-effort community support, OpenProject email support and enterprise-grade security. The $13.50 per user per month Professional plan adds phone support and access to the ticketing system.

The Premium plan, at $19.50 per user per month, adds remote support and faster incident response times. Finally, the scalable Corporate plan adds on-site support, a dedicated engineer and customer support for installed integrations. It’s worth noting that each plan offers incident response times that get faster as you move up through the plans. Overall, OpenProject is a solid platform.

redmine gantt charts

More details about Redmine:

  • Pricing : Free
  • Provider website : redmine.org
  • Free to use
  • Very versatile
  • Great plugin support
  • Dated user interface
  • Ridiculously hard to install
  • Steep learning curve

If you’re looking for powerful, robust open-source project management software, you must look at Redmine. However, know that to get this self-hosted tool working, you need to be tech-savvy or will need an IT department to get it working for you, as the installation is anything but straightforward. You can find out about installation and more in our Redmine review .

On the surface, Redmine looks like a very basic — and dated — project management tool. However, after you spend time with it, you’ll find that the software, which is ideal for software development teams, is powerful and can be used for project management, bug tracking and more. However, be prepared to spend time in the support forums, as the learning curve is steep.

Redmine supports unlimited projects and users, and features a simple Gantt chart, calendar and overview tools. There are wikis for each project you create and support for file sharing, resource management and project news. As for security and privacy , it’s only going to be as good as your servers, so make sure your firewalls are strong.

The Power of Plugins

Redmine is quite basic in terms of features. Still, because the source code is available, anyone can create open-source tools (integrations) for it, and wow, are there a ton of plugins (1,097 at the time of writing) that your entire organization can use.

In the plugin directory, you’ll find support for resource management and communication tools, dashboards, CRM, budgeting and cost management solutions, workflow tools that will help you support numerous projects, support for file storage and more. You can make Redmine anything you want it to be, making it an insanely versatile piece of open-source project management software.

redmine helpdesk plugin

If you can overcome the challenging installation process, Redmine will be a fantastic tool for you and your team. You can assign tasks, manage projects, perform bug tracking and complete jobs with ease. The best part is that Redmine is completely free . While Redmine doesn’t make our roundup of the best free project management software , it’s still a great choice.

3. Leantime

leantime kanban view

More details about Leantime:

  • Pricing : $7 per user per month (first user free)
  • Provider website : leantime.io
  • Fantastic user interface
  • Easy to pick up & use
  • Lots of tools
  • Limited free plan
  • Not many integrations
  • Simple but confusing plans

Leantime takes the third spot on our list of open-source project management software thanks to its delightful user interface, which many other visual project planning tools could learn from, and easy-to-use task management tools such as milestones, reports, time tracking and integrations.

Leantime offers several views, which include kanban boards, lists and Gantt charts. These tools make it easy to set project deadlines, track progress, create subtasks and dependencies, and see completed projects. There are also project dashboards that display vital information. From a security standpoint, you’ll find two-factor authentication with hosted memberships.

We have discovered that the Leantime team is very receptive to ideas and frequently implements suggestions from the user base into beta versions of the software, and that the support forums are buzzing overall. All the free tools and other features combine to make Leantime easy-to-use project management software .

Easy-Peasy Team Collaboration

Team collaboration features steal the Leantime show. Managers and team members can come together to work on project blueprints that can help design a project. Discussions can be had via an idea board (or idea kanban board), and a retrospective board allows teams to discuss what went well and which ideas failed during a project.

The software also makes chatting and sharing files through task cards easy. Thanks to the bright interface and intuitive menus, the team collaboration tools are as easy to use as the rest of the software. If you’re looking for task management software that encourages open dialogue, Leantime could be the choice for you.

Regarding plans, you can host Leantime on your server for free, or you can choose from free and paid hosted plans. The free Solopreneur plan offers unlimited projects for one user. The One Project Wonder plan allows one project and unlimited users. Costing $7 per user per month (first user free) is The Team plan, which comes with unlimited project support. 4. MeisterTask

meistertask kanban

More details about MeisterTask:

  • Pricing : $14.49 per user per month
  • Provider website : meistertask.com
  • Attractive user interface
  • Many tools & dedicated apps
  • Incredibly easy to use
  • Paid plans are a little pricey
  • Cannot be self-hosted

MeisterTask is open-source software with an incredibly attractive user interface. The views are bold and colorful, with large text that’s easy to read. The biggest downsides are that this software cannot be self-hosted and that the free plan, while suitable for individuals, lacks features. However, MeisterTask is much more than just a pretty face.

You’ll feel at home if you like kanban boards and Gantt charts. All the plans allow an unlimited number of tasks. The Basic plan only allows three projects, but the paid plans offer unlimited projects. Email support, dedicated apps, time tracking and team collaboration tools come as standard. You can upload files (20MB with the Basic plan and 200MB otherwise) to your projects, too.

If you like integrations, you’ll be happy knowing that from the Pro plan, you can integrate with Slack, GitHub, Google and many others with Zapier. Depending on your plan, there are also automations, reports, private projects, and advanced admin and security features. Whether you need help tracking simple projects or want to utilize scrum methodology, MeisterTask can do it.

MeisterTask Can Go Anywhere

Out of all the open-source software options we have covered in this list, MeisterTask is the only platform to offer native Windows and macOS apps, as well as apps for iPhones, Android devices and even the Apple Watch. MeisterTask didn’t make our list of the best project management for Windows , but it has done a nice job with all of its apps.

Whether you prefer to work outside a web browser or just want to access your projects and teams from the road, you can. The desktop applications work the same as the web version and have all the same features. The mobile applications offer a little less, but you can still perform essential project management duties with them. It’s nice to have the options.

Mesitertask homepage

Regarding pricing, MeisterTask offers three tiers outside of the Basic (free) plan. When paid annually, the Pro plan costs $14.49 per user per month. The Business plan comes in at $26.49 per user per month, which makes it more expensive than Asana (be sure to read our Asana review ). There’s an Enterprise option too, but you must contact MeisterTask for pricing.

Overall, MeisterTask is as wonderful to use for project management as it is to look at. All the core features project managers need can be found in this software, and they’re all easy to use. You’ll be up and running in no time. If you’d like to learn more about the software, check out our full MeisterTask review .

5. Freedcamp

freedcamp gantt chart

More details about Freedcamp:

  • Pricing : $1.49 per month (one-year plan)
  • Provider website : freedcamp.com
  • Easy to master
  • Lots of workflow tools
  • Very competitive pricing
  • Big price jumps betwixt plans
  • Comparatively weak free plan

Despite being in fifth place, Freedcamp isn’t just here to make up the numbers. The only reason Freedcamp sits in fifth place is that, out of all the open-source PM software we have covered, its free plan is a little sparse. However, overall, Freedcamp is a joy to use and is feature-packed.

Depending on your plan, Freedcamp gives you access to kanban boards, Gantt charts, tables (spreadsheets) and task lists. There are team collaboration and time-tracking tools, as well as milestone support. You’ll also variably get access to project management tools such as wikis, integrations, invoicing tools and more.

Unlike many other open-source project management systems, Freedcamp has a user-friendly interface that’s easy to navigate and interact with. Still, should you become stuck, the well-written guides and helpful tutorial videos in the knowledgebase will help you complete your project successfully. Freedcamp also offers a nice suite of security features.

Integrations Galore

While many of the more popular native integrations with apps like Google Drive, Dropbox and OneDrive hide behind the Freedcamp paid tiers, the core version of Freedcamp is compatible with the Zapier platform , which allows users to integrate one platform with others and create automations.

Zapier is compatible with over 5,000 different platforms, so, should you need project management features that aren’t present in the free version of Freedcamp, chances are you can integrate them. This means you’ll be able to easily calculate project costs, manage resource allocation, perform timekeeping and scheduling, and manage projects in general.

freedcamp zapier

Freedcamp’s free plan offers unlimited projects, tasks, storage and users, 10MB uploads and standard customer service. The Pro plan adds task management features and 25MB uploads, and costs $1.49 per user per month when paid annually. The Business plan adds premium support and costs $7.49 per user per month, per annum.

Finally, the Enterprise plan, with bigger upload limits, costs $16.99 per month when paid annually. Overall, Freedcamp, which comes into its own with its paid plans, is a solid alternative to the likes of Wrike, Asana and ClickUp. Read our full Freedcamp review for all the details.

  • Unlimited users, Unlimited projects, Basic functions
  • Price per user, Storage integration, Table view
  • Price per user, Templates, Gantt charts, Custom fields
  • Price per user, Security options, 14-day trial

Final Thoughts

There are good open-source options if you want to bypass the proprietary software that many companies use to help them plan their projects. Of all the options, you can’t do much better than OpenProject . This software is loaded with features, and once you get to grips with it, you’ll see just how potent it is. Still, the other options on this list are well worth looking at, too.

Are you a project manager who likes using open-source software? What do you like about open-source project management software? Have you tried any of the options we have listed above, or do you have any others you’d like to recommend? Please, let us know in the comments. Thank you so much for reading.

OpenProject is the best open-source project management software. Once you learn the ins and outs and get used to it, you’ll find that the project management tool is robust, versatile and very competitive when it comes to pricing. The Community (free) edition of the platform is strong, too.

Surprisingly, Google does not offer project management software.

Overall, monday.com is the best project management software thanks to a robust set of tools and a feature-dense and affordable Standard plan.

Microsoft does not offer a free version of MS Project, though there are affordable plans for individual users.

The software provides tools for idea management, strategy development, roadmap planning, and task management. It also includes an idea manager that enables users to store ideas, communicate them with team members, and move from idea to validation without confusing early ideas with established project tasks and goals.

Leantime also has planning tools with roadmaps for tracking milestones, calendars for setting meetings and timelines, and a backlog for breaking tasks into smaller subtasks. Other features include report screens, project dashboards, a timesheet manager, to-do lists, white labeling, and multiple user roles.

While Leantime offers comprehensive features to its users, it relies on a lean project management methodology and focuses on making its user interface organized and streamlined enough so no one loses focus. • People-driven management processes: Features include client management, role-specific management, timesheets, and retrospectives to better determine performance goals in the future.

Plane logo.

Best for Jira Users

Fast-moving Agile teams need a solution that can meet the needs of a highly technical team, from product roadmaps to sprint-supporting features and issue management. While many Agile teams have historically preferred Jira, the per-user price model and the intense learning curve can turn away many users. Plane offers a better middle ground for technical teams that need Agile support with a free price tag and a thoughtfully designed interface.

Example of the automated setup process in Plane.

  • Data Import Options: Cloud-version users can migrate existing data directly from their previous platform into Plane (such as Jira).
  • Customizable Project Cycles: Agile teams can use the Cycles feature to predetermine a time period for completing backlog items and tasks.
  • Analytics & Insights: The Frameworks feature enables teams to dive into deeper data insights through burn-down charts, estimates, and more.

Pros and Cons

  • User-friendliness: Plane is extremely user-friendly, with an intuitive interface and an automated walkthrough process for new users.
  • Customization options: Users are able to tailor their experience with Plane through numerous customization features and settings.
  • Support for various frameworks: Project views, settings, and styles are flexible to fit the needs of various teams, from Scrum teams to Waterfall teams and everything in between.
  • Data migration limitations: Only cloud-based users can directly migrate data into Plane, self-hosted users cannot.
  • Lack of transparent pricing: It’s unclear if Plane offers paid plans or will shortly. According to their website, as of February 2024, they’re “still tinkering” with plans.
  • Developing features: Because Plane is a relatively new software, some features are still in development or awaiting updates, such as integration and data migration options for self-hosted users.

Why We Picked Plane

Plane is a stand-out open-source solution for teams with diverse needs, especially users who are fans of Jira’s flexibility. While paid plans may be made available down the line, Plane’s current free-forever base plan offers a wide range of features to fit the needs of technical teams and more traditional business teams.

  • Hard to understand: Documentation has some linguistic fluency issues that can make it difficult to understand.
  • Bugs and lags: The user interface is occasionally buggy.

Why We Picked Orangescrum Open Source

Orangescrum Open Source is a straightforward open source solution with strong bug and issue tracking features. Its compatibility with the other versions of Orangescrum, including Orangescrum CRM, make this a highly scalable tool and a great option for teams that aren’t sure if they want to commit to an open source solution or not. • Limited advanced features: Compared to other open-source platforms, MeisterTask’s advanced features, such as reporting and analytics, are limited.

MeisterTask is approachable and appropriate for new users while packing in all of the granular customization options and privacy settings users expect from an open-source platform. In addition to stellar us

Redmine logo.

Best for User Support Resources

Based on a Ruby on Rails framework, Redmine’s an open source project management web app supports multiple projects with Gantt chart and calendar views, multiple databases, and role-based access control. It also supports multiple LDAP authentication from a directory server, like MS Active Directory.

In addition to the features covered above, Redmine offers built-in time tracking and allows the customization of fields for issues, time entries, projects, and users. It supports issue creation by email and integrates with several SCM tools like SVN, CVS, and Git.

One of the main reasons users select Redmine is its extensive collection of customer support resources. An extensive wiki, a user’s and developer’s guide, an FAQ, Redmine forums, a chatroom, and an unofficial Slack workspace are all available, giving users multiple options for self-service problem-solving. If a problem moves beyond the skillsets or knowledge of your team, users still have the option to submit bug reports, patch requests, and feature requests.

Example of the project completion tracker in Redmine.

  • Document and communication management: Features include news management, documents management, files management, feeds, and email notifications.
  • Security and administrative controls: Features and resources include multiple LDAP authentication support, role-based access controls, and security advisories.
  • Software change management: SCM features are available for SVN, CVS, Git, Mercurial, and Bazaar.
  • Easy navigation: The Wiki, Forums, and Repository features are all comprehensive and easy to navigate.
  • Product updates: The vendor’s roadmap for future iterations of the tool is very transparent.
  • Support options: Various forms of self-service and forum-driven support are available to users.
  • Limited customization: Custom fields may not be as granular as custom fields in other tools.
  • Self service support: Limited vendor-driven, hands-on support is available; most support is designed to be for self service.
  • Budgeting capabilities: Limited project budgeting features are available.

Why We Picked Redmine

Extensive documentation, forums, and self-help options are available to Redmine users. The Redmine roadmap is very transparent and shows how the vendor is constantly working out bugs and fleshing out new ideas for the tool. Users also have the option to contribute to the tool and do not have to have software development experience to do so.

Tuleap: Best for Agile and DevOps Teams

Tuleap is an all-in-one open source project management and software development tool for Agile and DevOps teams. It increases the collaboration of multi-functional teams so they can continuously deliver valuable and compliant software. Some of its key differentiators for Agile and DevOps include test management, Gerrit and Jenkins connectors, Git Enterprise, and business continuity and disaster recovery.

Tuleap is modular software with tools for project management, code versioning, code review, continuous integration, test management, document management, requirements baselining, issue tracking, and product management. It provides both a Scrum tool for managing product backlogs, plan releases, and metrics and a customizable Kanban tool that displays updates automatically.

Example of Tuleap’s interface.

  • Test management: Users can manage both automated and manual tests, define test cases, split tests into smaller steps, create campaigns, set up Test Plan strategies, create validation campaigns, group test cases, and export test results.
  • Requirement and baseline management: Features include advanced workflows for custom requirements and processes, test case generation based on requirements, and Tuleap Baseline for snapshots and reviewable release scopes.
  • Tuleap Document Manager: Document features include built-in approval workflows, document history, role-based access controls, versioning, and notifications.
  • Variety of integrations: Native integrations and features are available for various code and software development tools, including Jenkins, Gerrit, and Git Enterprise.

  • Monthly updates: Tuleap is updated monthly, so users can gain access to new features and fixes to potential problems on a regular basis.
  • Limited functions by plan: The Community Edition of this tool has limited customer support, security, flexibility, and other advanced features.
  • Doc support: Document management features could use some upgrades.
  • Limited admin controls: Limited ability for administrators to assign or limit roles, responsibilities, and access in the tool.

Why We Picked Tuleap

Tuleap offers a similar design and feature set to developer-driven project management tools like Jira. However, its customizable and flexible format actually makes it a better choice for teams that need more test management, document management, and CI/CD features that they can fit to their requirements. The platform also offers a stronger disaster recovery and business continuity approach than most open source competitors. Finally, it’s easy to switch back and forth between Community Edition and paid editions of Tuleap, so teams can easily scale their features up and down whenever needed.

Odoo Logo.

Odoo: Best for Marketing and Sales Teams

Odoo is a suite of open source business applications that can be used for a variety of business operations and tasks across finance, sales, human resources, marketing, website management, productivity, inventory management, and services like project management. Alone, Odoo’s Agile Project Management app is free to use and includes features like task management, document sharing, graphs and visualizations, and project forecasting.

The Agile Project Management app by itself is pretty simple, however, it’s a great option for teams that want to more seamlessly integrate project management tools with their other business software. It’s a particularly strong option for sales and marketing agencies and teams that want to more effectively manage their digital marketing, marketing automation, point of sale, and customer experience tasks by integrating Odoo Agile Project Management with Odoo’s many sales and marketing apps.

  • Intuitive interface: Users can easily set up and learn to use Odoo without excessive onboarding.

  • App navigation: Switching back and forth between Odoo Online and Odoo Enterprise can be challenging.
  • Support problems: Numerous users have reported issues with customer support responsiveness and helpfulness.

Why We Picked Odoo

On its own, Odoo isn’t necessarily the best open source project management solution, but it is one of the best for native integrations with other open-source business tools. E-commerce, marketing, sales, supply chain, and a variety of other teams can benefit from this suite of software that incorporates project management with other useful apps.

  • Generous features: A variety of program, product and project management features are available in all ZenTao plans.

  • Operations management support: OPS management features are available to manage servers, server rooms, and network topology.
  • Limited views by plan type: Certain project-level views and reports are not available except for in the highest tier plan.
  • Expensive pricing: Per-user pricing for paid self-hosted plans can get expensive quickly; having unlimited users on paid plans is also incredibly expensive.
  • Confusing pricing: In general, ZenTao’s pricing and packages are confusing to work with.

Why We Picked ZenTao

ZenTao provides comprehensive application lifecycle management features to its users, making it possible for them to manage the most granular details of product development and release roadmaps. The software integrates with Git, SVN, and SonarQube, furthering its capabilities when it comes to product development and release. ZenTao also offers users strong visualization options, including burndown charts.

WeKan logo.

WeKan: Best for Security Features

WeKan is a free open source project management solution that is almost solely designed for Kanban project management. It is licensed under the MIT license, translated into more than 70 languages, and available for a variety of operating systems and CPU platforms. WeKan’s team strongly encourages users to take advantage of one-click installation and self-host the tool on their own computers and servers.

While WeKan is one of the most limited in functionality on this list, it provides users with an effective and easy-to-use Kanban solution. The platform also integrates with many third-party tools and can be customized extensively, so users have the option to add more features as they go.

But what really makes WeKan stand out is its commitment to top-tier security. Users have the ability to disable public boards, WeKan provides transparent security disclosures, and password hashing is also available. WeKan customers have the option to select either Standalone WeKan Security or Sandstorm Wekan Security, depending on their specific requirements. Additionally, users can report security issues in a secure manner, using WeKan’s PGP public key rather than creating a GitHub issue.

Example of the Kanban style layout within WeKan.

  • Kanban design: With WeKan’s approach to Kanban, users can access boards with columns, drag-and-drop cards, and customizable labels.
  • Burndown charts: WeKan offers a Python burndown chart, a burndown chart Chrome extension, and velocity chart options.
  • Swimlanes: To better differentiate individual tasks, WeKan offers the Swimlanes view and allows users to rename, reorder, and archive their swimlanes as needed.
  • Easy installation: One-click installation is available for a variety of platforms.
  • Permission settings: Board-level and user-level access permissions can be set up by administrators; a number of other advanced security features are also available.
  • Easy usability: Simple drag-and-drop functionality makes this an easy tool to use.
  • Limited functionality: WeKan may offer functionality that is too simple or limited for most users.
  • View limitations: View types are limited and the empahsis on Kanban capabilities is significant which may make WeKan a poor choice for teams with diverse needs.
  • Data recovery: WeKan does not offer an undo feature if bugs, updates, or other unexpected issues delete your data.

Why We Picked WeKan

It’s hard to get simpler than WeKan, especially if you’re looking for Kanban features. The visual components of this tool are clean and easy to use, and much of the tool relies on drag-and-drop and one-click functionality, etc. Despite its simplicity, WeKan still presents users with a useful tool through an effective UX/UI design, strong security and administrative controls, and a transparent product roadmap.

When looking for the right open source project management software for your business, make sure you look at solutions that offer these key features:

  • Source code documentation and availability : With source code documentation, developers on your team can see how the tool is currently set up and determine what changes they want to make and what changes are possible for your own version of the tool. Bonus points if you find a tool that securely stores this information and any changes you make.
  • Resource management and time tracking : A number of closed source project management solutions offer resource management and time tracking for an added fee, but if you find the right open source solution, these features are available for free through some customization on your part. With resource management and time tracking, your team can more easily measure performance and time spent across your entire project portfolio, leading to better and more efficient outcomes.
  • Collaboration and communication features : Many open source project management solutions natively offer the ability to leave comments on project line items, documents, and more. Others include live chat and/or third-party integrations with communication tools.
  • Various project views and customizability : While some open source project management solutions don’t have as many view options as closed source software, they usually have a handful of customizable views that are designed with developer needs in mind. Common project views in open source project management software include Kanban, Gantt, and calendar views.
  • Project scheduling and task management : Task and subtask-level management features allow your team to get into the details of a project, scheduling both big picture goals and individual responsibilities and milestones that will get you there.

What Are the Key Benefits of Open Source Project Management Software?

Using open source project management software can introduce a number of benefits into your project management workflow, but these are the top three benefits that come from implementing open source project management software:

  • Increased customization options: With access to the PM too’s source code and documentation, your team is given transparent information about what they can do to customize the tool. Many open source solutions can be deployed either in the cloud or on-premises, as well as across a variety of operating systems; this flexibility makes it so you can use open source tools whenever, wherever, and however works best for your team.
  • Affordability : Most open source project management solutions are available in a free plan, or at least through a free trial option. Even paid versions of open source PM software tend to be reasonably priced and lower than most closed source alternatives.
  • Strong community support network: Although most open source tools don’t have as much dedicated hands-on support offered by vendors, they have a strong collaborative approach to support that works well for the right user. Community forums, group chats, wikis, and collaborative coding options make it so your team can teach and learn from other users of the tool.

Open source project management software is project management software that any user can modify, inspect, enhance, and share with others thanks to its publicly accessible design. The “source” in open source software refers to the portion of software that users don’t typically access, but it’s how programmers can edit software to make edits and customizations.

There are a number of reasons to consider open source project management solutions, from an increased level of control over the software, to learning how to become a better programmer , increasing application security , and more.

Much like traditional project management software, different software offerings cater to different project management methodologies. While many open source project management solutions cater to the needs of technical teams, typically using the Scrum methodology, there are numerous options that cater to Agile and Waterfall teams.

One of the main reasons some users prefer using open source project management solutions is due to an increased level of control over the security of the application. Because users can view and modify the code of the software, it’s easier to identify potential security risks and customize the settings to enhance security.

How to Research Open Source Project Management Solutions

For users who are exploring open source project management software for the first time, it can be intimidating to find reliable information and reviews of the solutions available on the market, as open source software can be an incredibly niche topic that lacks the type of mainstream coverage that traditional project management solutions have. In order to properly evaluate the options available yourself, consider exploring sites, such as Reddit or Github, to read user reviews directly.

How to Choose the Best Open Source Project Management Solution

Choosing the best open source project management solution can be tricky, especially since there are so many options that suit teams of different sizes and industrial backgrounds. And while open source project management software tends to be affordable, users who do not effectively research their options may end up with a tool that doesn’t meet all of their requirements or costs too much to scale.

If your company prioritizes free software options, choose Redmine, Leantime, or ZenTao. These tools are not only free but also offer comprehensive features in their free plan versions. Additionally, many of these plans give access to unlimited users for unlimited projects at little to no cost.

If your company prioritizes a smooth user experience, choose Plane, ProjectLibre, Orangescrum Open Source, or OpenProject. Reviewers of these tools frequently talk about their ease of use and even compare them to popular closed source solutions like Jira and Microsoft Project.

Regardless of where your priorities lie when selecting open source project management software, be sure to do your own hands-on research of these tools, especially the ones that offer free versions or trials. You and your team can make a more informed purchasing decision once you’ve had the opportunity to get familiar with a few different open source software platforms.

Top 8 open source project management tools for agile teams

A confusing business organization chart

Opensource.com

Do you use a dedicated project management tool?

Opensource.com has surveyed the landscape of popular open source project management tools. We've done this before—but this time we've added a twist. This time, we're looking specifically at tools that support agile methodology, including related practices such as Scrum , Lean, and Kanban.

The growth of interest in and use of agile is why we've decided to focus on these types of tools this year. A majority of organizations say they are using agile approaches at least sometimes. In addition, agile projects are 28% more successful than projects managed with traditional approaches.

For this roundup, we looked at the project management tools we covered in 2014 , 2015 , and 2016 and plucked the ones that support agile, then did research to uncover any additions or changes. Whether your organization is already using agile or is one of the many planning to adopt agile approaches, one of these seven open source project management tools, in no particular order, may be exactly what you're looking for.

MyCollab Kanban board

opensource.com

MyCollab is a suite of three collaboration modules for small and midsize businesses: project management, customer relationship management (CRM), and document creation and editing software. There are two licensing options: a commercial "ultimate" edition, which is faster and can be run on-premises or in the cloud, and the open source "community edition," which is the version we're interested in here.

The community edition doesn't have a cloud option and is slower, due to not using query cache, but provides essential project management features, including tasks, issues management, activity stream, roadmap view, and a Kanban board for agile teams. While it doesn't have a separate mobile app, it works on mobile devices as well as Linux, Unix, Windows, and MacOS.

[Read next:  Beware the dark side of agile project management ]

The source code for the latest version of MyCollab is available on  GitHub . It is licensed under AGPLv3 and requires a Java runtime and MySQL stack to operate. It's available for download  for Linux, Unix, Windows, and MacOS.

OpenProject

OpenProject sprint board

OpenProject is a powerful open source project management tool that is notable for its ease of use and rich project management and team collaboration features.

Its modules support project planning, scheduling, roadmap and release planning, time tracking, cost reporting, budgeting, bug tracking, and agile and Scrum. Its agile features, including creating stories, prioritizing sprints, and tracking tasks, are integrated with OpenProject's other modules. OpenProject also offers options for paid hosting and support with an enterprise edition that adds features such as custom branding, easy Single Sign-On (SSO), additional metadata, and several UX conveniences.

OpenProject is licensed under GPLv3 with source code available on GitHub . Helpful documentation is available for developers at OpenProject.org/development , or you can learn more about installing and configuring it in Birthe Lindenthal's article " Getting started with OpenProject ."

Phabricator

Phabricator main screen

Phabricator is a collection of web apps by Phacility , and it contains far more tasks than the project advertises in its sales pitch. It's unusual for a company to intentionally under sell their product, but that's Phacility's model, but don't be fooled by their modesty. There's Manifest for bug and issue tracking, Projects for Kanban workboards, Diffusion for Git hosting, Phame for blogging, the Phriction wiki, Harbormaster for CI/CD, Conpherence for team chat, and much much more. Everything is intregrated, so there's no "rewiring" required to make your Kanban board affect your bug tracker. There's a dashboard for all of the data, too, so tracking progress can happen at every level.

Phabricator is used by many active projects, including some big KDE applications, like Kdenlive and Krita , so its efficacy has been proven by teams distributed around the globe. It's under constant development and tends to be open to feedback and enhancement requests.

Phabricator kanban board

You can run Phabricator on your own server and purchase paid support, or you can pay Phacility for hosting (with a Support Pact included). It's licensed under the Apache 2.0 license and is available from the project's Github mirror .

Gitlab issue board

On the Internet, Gitlab is known as a website hosting open source projects in Git repositories. But within the walls of companies and organizations, Gitlab is possibly better known as an open source, locally installed web application for software development and project management. You can pay for hosting plans, or host it yourself, and if you're running the community edition, then you're running only open source components.

Gitlab's community edition is distributed under the MIT license, and supports Agile development through scrum and kanban, sprint planning, epics, bug tracking, documentation, dashboards, charts, scheduling, automation, CI/CD, and more. There are many additional benefits, not the least of which is general developer familiarity with the platform. While many developers may have learned either Microsoft's Github or just pure Git (the open source backend to Github, Gitlab, and many others), it's fair to expect them to understand the workflow of using Git through a web interface.

For the project managers running the show, Gitlab's interface is intuitive, consistent, and robust. A project manager doesn't ever have to leave Gitlab. All tasks, from assigning tasks and planning sprints to accepting merge requests and deleting branches, can be done from within the Gitlab UI.

As Gitlab continues to develop, there's every reason to believe that even more features for project management will be added. The Gitlab developers are happy to take feature requests and are quick to respond to feedback. You can download the Community Edition from Gitlab.com/install .

Odoo is more than project management software; it's a full, integrated business application suite that includes accounting, human resources, website and e-commerce, inventory, manufacturing, sales management (CRM), and other tools.

The free and open source community edition has limited features compared to the paid enterprise suite. Its project management application includes a Kanban-style task-tracking view for agile teams, which was updated in its latest release, Odoo 11.0, to include a progress bar and animation for tracking project status. The project management tool also includes Gantt charts, tasks, issues, graphs, and more. Odoo has a thriving community and provides user guides and other training resources.

It is licensed under GPLv3 and requires Python and PostgreSQL. It is available for download for Linux, Windows, and Red Hat Package Manager, as a Docker image, and as source on GitHub .

Taiga Kanban board

Taiga is an open source project management platform that focuses on Scrum and Agile development, with features including a Kanban board, tasks, sprints, issues, backlog, and epics. Other features include ticket management, multi-project support, wiki pages, and third-party integrations.

It also offers a free mobile app for Android, iOS, and Windows devices, and provides import tools that make it easy to migrate from other popular project management applications.

Taiga is free for public projects, with no restrictions on either the number of projects or the number of users. For private projects, there is a wide range of paid plans but the software's features are the same regardless of what plan you choose.

Taiga is licensed under GNU Affero GPLv3, and requires a stack that includes Nginx, Python, and PostgreSQL. The latest release is available from GitHub .

Tuleap

Tuleap is an application lifecycle management (ALM) platform that aims to manage projects for every type of team—small, midsize, large, waterfall, agile, or hybrid—but its support for agile teams is prominent. Notably, it offers support for Scrum, Kanban, sprints, tasks, reports, continuous integration, backlogs, and more.

Other features include issue tracking, document tracking, collaboration tools, and integration with Git, Jenkins, SVN, all of which make it an appealing choice for open source software development projects.

Tuleap is licensed under GPLv2 and is available on Github .

ZenTao project management tool

Kelsea Zhang, CC BY-SA 4.0

ZenTao is a professional project management tool based on the Scrum methodology and Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI) philosophy. It has multiple features to cover the entire software development lifecycle. It clearly defines the concepts of program, project, product, and execution to help the production, development, and QA teams coordinate with each other while maintaining separate functionalities.

ZenTao provides three kinds of project management modules: Scrum, Waterfall, and Kanban. Teams can build customized processes through its powerful and flexible workflow. Its testing and bug tracking processes feature everything you need from product creation to release. ZenTao can be integrated with SVN, SonarQube, GitLab, and Jenkins for better code management.

ZenTao is licensed under dual licenses: ZPL and AGPL. It is available for Linux, Windows, and macOS. You can check out its docker image and the source code on GitHub . Download the Open Source Edition (Community Edition) from zentao.pm/download or you can run it in the cloud.

The trouble with this type of list is that it's usually out of date as soon as it's published. Are you using an open source project management tool that supports agile that we forgot to include? Or do you have feedback on the ones we mentioned? Please leave a comment below.

The Best Open-Source Project Management Tools in 2024

Engineering Team

May 12, 2024

A project manager has a lot on their plate—from keeping track of task timelines to evaluating delivery risks and managing workloads . A reliable project management (PM) tool is a must-have to accomplish goals, but the question of essence is: Should you go for an open-source product or traditional project management software?

Open-source project management tools are often preferred by small companies and startups that don’t want to invest in a pricey “boxed” PM solution. While there’s a perceived notion that open-source software can speed up product delivery for Agile teams , using it can be a double-edged sword at times. ⚔️

For example, project management software that’s open-sourced is usually not the most user-friendly for detailed task management and project planning. You may also have to put up with compatibility issues or severe security flaws with some products.

With that in mind, let’s discuss some of the best open-source project management tools in this guide.

Our quick reviews will help you find the one that can handle your workflows.

What Should You Look for in Open-Source Project Management Tools?

2. projectlibre, 4. openproject, 7. restyaboard, 8. taskcafe.

Avatar of person using AI

The quality of your project management software, whether open source or not, must roughly offer the following functionalities:

  • Project visibility : The tool should let you oversee projects from different perspectives, such as task progress, assignee workloads, and completion risks
  • Task management : It’s critical that the software supports organizing tasks. It should let you break project planning goals into action items and make tracking easier with status updates and priority tags. Features like time-tracking and resource management to manage workloads are optimal
  • Customizations : It should let you customize the environment with tailored workflows, custom fields , and configurable notifications
  • Accessibility : You should be able to use the software on your computer and mobile device to enjoy flexibility and handle urgent matters on the fly
  • Templates : The best project management software has a collection of templates to add structure to your project planning, admin, and management duties
  • Collaboration tools : See if it has tools like digital whiteboards, document sharing, comment threads, and mind maps to help your team members collaborate

If you’re fixated on open-source tools, consider additional factors like pricing and suitability. These products are typically free, but if you need advanced functionalities and support for complex business models, you may have to opt for a paid option.

Cognitively Accessible

We build and design for ADHD, Dyslexia, Autism and the unique ways all of our brains process information.

People First Project Management

Built for the different ways our brains process the world

  • AI and behavioral science to personalize the work experience
  • Features to boost dopamine and inspire motivation
  • Decreasing the overload and overwhelm of hard to use systems

Start by asking: "What are we trying to accomplish?"

Being “strategic” doesn’t have to be complicated. It just means we set a direction.

💸 Company Purpose: Describe why the company exists, the why you are working on what you are

🔮 The Strategic vision asks, “If we achieve our purpose, how does the world look different?”

Only 28% of middle managers and executives responsible for strategy execution can list 3 of the company’s strategies. Many couldn’t list any at all.

To meet the company purpose, to reach the vision — decide what we’re focusing on and set some goals to get there.

Goals are great at the strategy level but the work is done at the project level.

  • Link and report project goals to the strategy
  • Link but don’t add into the count
  • Or keep project or program goals separate from the strategy

Whether the view is from the one pager or on the individual focus area, a focus area is meant to be the grounding point to where our goals should be directed towards.

Trying to be a data driven company? These are the moments where you can ask, without bias, “Does this get us closer to our goal?”

Whether at the strategy level or the project level, we have frameworks built in to help you manage the research, build clarity for the team, and simplify communicating those ideas.

Think & Make

the foundation of work management

For task management in a project, you get your choice of Kanban , Table or a List view.

Manage your subtasks and dependencies as well.

Welcome to our Timeline (Milestone) view.  Milestones, In Leantime, are groups of tasks bundled together with a date so you can view them on a timeline (gantt chart).

Get an even higher level view when you view the timeline on our Program Plan overview.

Create some definition. Why are we doing what we’re doing? Who is it for? What should it look like?

The blueprint boards allow you to do your research, validating, tracking and analysis even at the project level.

Looking to better understand how the team is working? Our reports allow you to see how the hours are all coming together.

You need more than a Kanban to keep track of what you’re building and that’s why we have Docs.

Embed outside documents and work with external teams or keep tracking of what you need internally.

Retrospectives  are an opportunity to reflect on the work that we’ve recently accomplished and give the team room to discuss what worked well, what didn’t, and what needs to change.

You need ideas to take you to the next level but it’s easy to lose track of them.

Track ideas easily here and in the near future, link them to the to dos and work being done.

If you need to get better at estimating work or if you’re going to send hourly billables to a client, you need to be able to track your time with our  Timesheets.

Track directly on the To Do when you start work, edit and approve hours. In the future, we’ll have plugins to allow you to connect to Quickbooks and other accounting platforms.

AI as a Productivity Sidekick

Delegate the mental overload while making the project experience more personal

  • Break down large tasks into smaller, more manageable To Dos
  • Project descriptions become personalized stories for each team member (in a pirate, knight, or motivational speaker tone)
  • Collect and schedule Status Updates & generate Status Reports

More than task management

Dopamine is released in the brain on the path to accomplishing a goal. The more you connect, track, and see progress… the more motivating it becomes.

  • Privately rate how you feel about the work on your personal dashboard then let AI help you prioritize where to start
  • Connect the purpose of work and share the why through the use of strategy boards, program plans, Business Model Canvas & more blueprint boards.
  • Keep all the knowledge in one place: documents, files, and whiteboard details in the project

Work meets Personal Organization

Go from projects to personal impact

Leantime focuses on the individual organization because it’s the most important piece to motivating, engaging, and supporting people in making an impact and knowing what to focus on. You can now customize this board, move, select and resize widgets.

Time block your work to the calendar so you can see what you’re working on clearly and when.

Import your external calendar and align those tasks with your meetings and other events.

Notes is now a personal widget for your My Work dashboard or as it’s own tab on the navigation. In either view, you can save your important links, edit immediately, or even create a personal checklist.

AI prioritization takes how you feel about the work and uses best practices across three productivity methods and organizes your tasks due in the coming week.

Import any external calendar that offers an iCal URL. You can find this available via Google Calendar, Apple, Outlook and more.

A free project management tool - and finally easy to use

We saw the boost in team collaboration and motivation that our open source users got from our foundational project management features. Now you can use our online project management software for free for up to 150 To Dos  — without the open source setup. Get started for free and then level up your work management by connecting the vision to your To Do list, watching the big picture progress, and then use AI to help prioritize and break down the work.

10 Powerful Excel Project Management Templates for Tracking Anything

P roject management templates are an essential tool for replicating successful projects. With Microsoft Excel's free templates, you can turn your simple spreadsheets into powerful project management tools.

In this article, you'll find some of the most useful and free Microsoft Excel project management and project tracking templates you'll want to use for your next project.

Microsoft Excel Project Timeline Templates

Let's take a look at the best Microsoft Excel project management templates.

We cover both native and third-party templates here. To find the pre-installed Excel spreadsheet templates, open Excel and search for the respective keyword from the New document screen.

If you're already in Excel, go to File > New to bring up the template search. Check the Managing Microsoft Excel Templates section below for more details.

Excel comes with several timelines and Gantt chart templates provided by Microsoft, but it also integrates templates from Vertex42, one of the most popular third-party resources for spreadsheets.

1. Work Plan Timeline

The Work Plan Timeline template is suitable for a basic project with multiple phases. When you enter your data into the worksheet, the roadmap will update automatically. This template comes pre-installed in Microsoft Excel 2016 and up.

2. Date Tracking Gantt Chart

Gantt charts are a staple in every project manager's toolset. They help you visualize the flow of your tasks and track progress.

With this template, you can create a comprehensive Gantt chart with minimal effort. Just enter each task, complete with a description, who it's assigned to, a percentage to indicate progress, a start date, and allocated days until completion. This template is a Microsoft Excel default.

3. Milestone and Task Project Timeline

If you want to integrate milestones into a basic timeline, this template provided by Vertex42 is ideal. It combines the best elements of a Gantt chart, i.e. the visualization of the task flow, with milestones hovering above the timeline.

Just fill in the respective tables to populate the visual. You can find this template by searching in Excel.

Excel Project Plan Templates

A project plan is a document that may require Excel charts, but is otherwise composed in Microsoft Word. For basic projects, however, you may get away with only a Microsoft Excel document.

4. Simple Gantt Chart

When you search Excel's template repository for project plan templates, you'll mainly find different Gantt chart variations, including this Simple Gantt Chart from Vertex42. What sets it apart from the Gantt chart above is the inclusion of project phases. This template is included in Microsoft Excel.

5. Event Planner Template

A project plan really isn't something you typically put together in Excel. However, if you are planning a small project, like a party, you just need a one-page template that lists the essential tasks and lets you define a schedule and a budget. This template from Office Templates Online is a great start.

Excel Project Tracker Template

A search for a tracker will bring up a wild mix of personal and business-related Excel spreadsheet templates for tracking. However, you can narrow down your search by selecting categories that relate to the project management task you're dealing with.

6. Activity-Based Cost Tracker

This tracking template can help you get an overview of direct, indirect, and general and administrative product costs.

7. Project Tracking Template

This Vertex42 template is essential if you are handling multiple different clients, projects, and/or deliverables. It combines project details, expenses, task statuses, and due dates.

Business Plan Templates

Microsoft Excel 2016 had its own category for business plans. You could search for the keyword business and select the Business Plans category on the right.

In Excel 2019 and onwards, you can perform either query, but the latter misses some templates, while the former might be overwhelming. We recommend looking into the following.

Business Plan Checklist

Creating a business plan can be a complex project in and of itself. This checklist will help you cover all your bases by guiding you through the process using a SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, threats) analysis.

Note that you'll find two similar templates in Excel, but they're both identical SWOT analysis checklists, differing only in their formatting.

Startup Expenses

This template is a great starting point for a budding business owner who needs some help with projecting the costs of their endeavor. The template will guide you through the most common assets and services your new business might require.

Once you've filled in all the potential expenses, you'll have a much better idea of how much funding you'll need to raise to get your business up and running. For more business plan templates , take a look at our dedicated article.

Search for Online Templates

Couldn't find the exact project management template you need in Excel? Turn to a third-party online resource for a wide selection of Excel spreadsheet templates. We recommend the following sites.

This website has a few great project management templates for Microsoft Office 2003 and up. The site notes that its templates are mostly related to project scheduling. Anything more complicated might require Microsoft Project or other project management software.

On the page dedicated to project management , you'll find a list of useful material, including, but not limited to, the following:

  • Project Budgeting
  • Critical Path Method

Each page contains a quick rundown of what the template does, one or more templates, and further tips and tricks for the respective project management tool. It's a great resource for budding project managers.

TidyForm has a respectable selection of Microsoft Excel project management templates. The most popular categories are listed on the homepage. If you can't immediately spot what you need, switch to the Business section or try the search feature.

When you scroll to the bottom of a section, you'll see a list of popular categories and related categories. This can be helpful when trying to find just the right template. We recommend the following pages:

  • Project Budget
  • Project Proposal
  • Work Breakdown Structure

Still looking for the perfect template? You might have to create custom Excel templates to get exactly what you want.

Managing Microsoft Excel Templates

First, let's see what templates you already have installed in Microsoft Excel. For the purpose of this demonstration, we've used Excel 2019, but the procedure is similar in Microsoft Office 2013 and Office 2016.

Default Templates

When you start up Microsoft Excel, the first window you see will contain a search field for online templates. When you're starting from an existing workbook, go to File > New to arrive at the same view.

Microsoft Excel comes with a selection of pre-installed templates. They are listed underneath the search field. You can pin your favorite ones by clicking the respective symbol in the bottom right of the listing.

Search Online for More Project Templates (Excel 2016)

Searching for the type of template you need is the fastest way to locate it. For example, if you search for the term "project," you may also see template categories listed next to the templates that match your search. The category feature no longer appears in Excel 2019.

Narrow Down Your Search (Excel 2016)

A neat feature is that you can narrow down your search by selecting multiple categories. This helps you exclude templates that may match your keyword, but not your desired category. On the downside, you may find that the perfect template is not available in Microsoft Excel.

Preview & Create Your Template

When you click a template, you'll see a preview with a brief description of what the template provides. You can also pin the template from its preview; the symbol sits in the top right.

To download and use a template, click the Create button, which will open a new Microsoft Excel workbook with the template pre-filled.

Template Ready, Set, Go

Now that you have all the project management templates you could ever need, maybe you're interested in additional tools, tips, and tricks. For example, you could build a custom interactive Excel dashboard to manage data within your projects. The possibilities are endless.
