• Is Toloka legit? Toloka is a crowdsourcing platform that helps process large amounts of data by distributing tasks to a large number of people who do small tasks. Client companies, or requesters, create tasks on the Toloka platform and set the reward for them, while Tolokers choose tasks, complete them and earn money online. The task is paid when it’s completed correctly.
• What are these online tasks all about? You can help classify images, transcribe audio recordings, moderate comments, complete focus group surveys, and so on. The resulting data can be used for training machine learning algorithms, research, or other purposes.
• Will I make real money online? Yes, you get paid in US dollars for completing online tasks. To withdraw money, you need to choose one of the withdrawal methods and register in the payment system. Don't try to withdraw money until you are sure that your account has been confirmed in the payment system.

If you have a little one at home — you know how difficult it can be to get things done. But just because you have a household filled with chatter and unpredictable schedules doesn’t mean that you can’t work from home. Short tasks, also called micro-jobs or pay-per-task jobs, are the perfect way for busy moms to earn some extra money while still being readily available for their kiddos.

A micro-task job is any job or assignment that can be completed in a short amount of time. The tasks that can be completed vary in nature (writing, editing, taking surveys, transcription, watching a video, online research, etc.), as does the pay. But the reason this is such an excellent opportunity for moms is that the tasks can be done at any time, and the majority of short jobs don’t require phone work , which requires a quiet household.

If you have kiddos running around your house, here are 24 small task sites that allow you to work whenever you have free time, and make extra money on the side.

1. Swagbucks

Swagbucks is a microtask platform where you can earn points called SB, which you can redeem for gift cards from places like Starbucks, Walmart, PayPal and Visa. With Swagbucks, you can earn SB by playing games , answering questions, shopping online, and even surfing the web using their search bar. If you refer your friends — you can earn even more. New users will receive a $10.00 sign-up bonus! The thing I like about Swagbucks is you can redeem your earnings with as little as $3.00 in your account.

2. InboxDollars

With InboxDollars , US residents can earn cash for taking surveys, reading emails, playing games, redeeming coupons, searching the web, and shopping online. Payment options include PayPal, American Express or Visa Pre-Paid cards, or gift cards from major retailers. InboxDollars is open to US residents 18 years and older. 3. Course Hero

Course Hero is a short task platform that hires native English speakers from the US, UK, Canada, and Australia to tutor high school and college students with course-specific questions. Individuals must have a bachelor’s degree. Tutors earn an average of $3.00 per question, earning around $12-$20 per hour. Work as many hours as you’d like; all you need is a reliable internet connection.

4. TELUS International

TELUS International , which acquired Lionbridge, hires independent contractors to work on microtasks like translation, transcription, rating ads, annotation, search engine evaluation, and testing. You must first prove your proficiency by taking and passing relevant evaluation tests (which I’ve heard are pretty challenging). Once they have your evaluation scores, you’ll receive invites to work on available projects. With these gigs, you can work whenever, wherever, and as much as you’d like.

• TELUS International has an A- rating with the Better Business Bureau

Fiverr is a little different in that you don’t search for jobs. Instead, you post tasks you’re willing to complete for $5.00-$10,000. People sell everything from writing services, design services, and voice-over services to making phone calls and videos. Once you make a sale, Fiverr will keep a fee of 20%, and payments will be made via PayPal.

6. Amazon Mechanical Turk

Over at Amazon’s MTurk , you can make money online working on HITS (Human Intelligence Tasks). A few of the tasks that I saw listed were transcribing information from a business card to a form with a payout of $0.02. Another task was transcribing a voicemail from audio to text (audio length of three hours), a payout of $76.19. After completing the task and the requester approves your work, the money goes into your Amazon payments account or onto an Amazon gift card .

Amazon MTurk tends to get mixed reviews. Some people complained of low payouts, and others have said their work wasn’t approved, so they didn’t get paid. We have no way of knowing the quality of their work, and if denial of payment was justified, so read through reviews before deciding to join.

7. Clickworker

Clickworker is a task site platform where you can get paid for writing, translating, researching, and collecting data. Create an account, fill out your profile, complete a qualification assessment, then bid on jobs. Payments are made by SEPA bank account transfers or PayPal once your account reaches 5.00 euros and your tax information has been completed. Clickworker’s clients include Groupon, Tennis Point, Honda, PayPal, and others.

Appen is a virtual workspace where you can earn money by completing simple tasks on your computer. Duties include Internet research, data collection, data categorization, content creation, content moderation, surveys, and other projects and microtasks that can be done anywhere in the world.

• Appen receives a 3.5-star rating on Indeed

9. Vericant

Vericant is a platform where individuals can rate videos for cash at any time of the day. Remote raters will assess the spoken English of international college students applying to schools in the United States. To be eligible to rate videos, you must be able to work 5-15 hours per week between September and March. You also need to be a native English speaker from North America, have a bachelor’s degree, and have an excellent command of the English language.

10. Field Agent

Field Agent allows you to make money by completing mystery shopping gigs on your phone. From checking shelf availability and product reviews to surveys and buy and try. Tasks pay anywhere from $3.00-$12.00 per job, and payments are made via PayPal. Field Agent works with brands like Tyson, Target, and Hershey’s and has been featured on CNET, Forbes, and The New York Times. This app is available for iOS and Android devices.

• Field Agent receives a 4.5-star rating in the Apple app store

While not promoted as a short task site, Rev offers task-based positions for transcribers, translators, and closed captioners that can be done anytime. The pay range for translators is by language minute, so for instance, German pays $3.00 a minute.

For transcribers, it’s $0.30-$1.10 per audio minute, and for closed captioners, it’s $0.54-$1.10 per audio minute. With Rev, you choose your schedule and projects, and payments are made weekly via PayPal. Rev has been featured in Inc, The Wall Street Journal, and VentureBeat.

12. GigWalk

GigWalk is a mobile workforce of individuals using their smartphones to perform short tasks. Register, apply for an assignment, and then complete the task (usually verifying roads and street signs, geographic landmarks, or transportation options). Gigwalk’s workforce is available in multiple US cities. GigWalk has been featured on CNN, Business Insider, and Forbes.

13. Data Annotation Tech

Data Annotation Tech is a small task platform where you make money completing various AI tasks, such as surveys, interacting with chatbots, creative writing, coding projects, and more. While no experience is required for these AI jobs, they are looking for applicants with excellent writing skills, critical thinking ability, and a high level of attention to detail. With Data Annotation Tech, you can earn $20 per hour for writing tasks, and $40 per hour for coding tasks, and payments are made via PayPal. These online tasks are available to individuals in the US, Canada, Ireland, UK, New Zealand, and Australia.

TaskRabbit is an on-demand site where you complete tasks such as house cleaning, delivery services, handyman work, furniture assembly, grocery shopping, administrative help, and more. To get started, create an account, get a background check, then browse the open tasks in your city and make an offer. TaskRabbit keeps 20% of what you make, and payments are made via check every two weeks once your account reaches $25.00.

15. Fancy Hands

Fancy Hands hires US-based virtual assistants to complete small tasks like making phone calls, scheduling appointments, tracking down the best price for a product or service, internet research, and data entry. Tasks are worth anywhere from $3.00-$7.00 per task and go up from there. Payments are made via Dwolla every other Tuesday. With this job, you can work on your own schedule, day or night. One thing to note. I’ve heard some people say that the platform is saturated with workers, so there isn’t very much work available. Be sure to read the most current reviews before you take the time to apply.

• Fancy Hands receives a 2.9-star rating on Glassdoor

16. Datavio.ai

Datavio.ai which is part of iSoftStone, hires people from around the globe to work on short tasks like app testing, annotation, transcription, data labeling, translation, and more. Each project has different skill and education requirements and varying pay rates. One data collection project required users to work 30-40 hours per week and paid $25 per hour. All the projects I viewed were independent contracting roles; some included training, while others did not.

17. Respondent

Respondent is a research study organization that pays individuals to participate in focus group studies, short surveys, and website testing gigs. According to their website, the average study or survey is 30 minutes in length, and the average payout is $75 per study. Many of their studies are for professionals, not the general public, so you’ll need to meet specific criteria to qualify for studies. Payments come through your PayPal account.

• Respondent receives a 1.6-star rating on Trustpilot, but many of the poor reviews were complaining that they didn’t qualify for any studies. I’ve had good luck using the platform, so be sure to read my full review on Respondent .

18. UserTesting

If you have short periods of quiet time in your schedule (perhaps during your child’s nap time), you can make money testing websites and apps on UserTesting . With this platform, you create an account and browse projects. Once you find a project that fits your demographic, you’ll take a screener test, and if you’re a match, you’ll get an invite to the project. UserTesting has short, medium, and longer length projects that pay anywhere from $4-$120. Payments come every 14 days via PayPal.

• UserTesting has a 3.9-star rating on Trustpilot

19. JustAnswer

JustAnswer pays individuals to answer questions online in their area of training or expertise. They currently hire people from the US and Canada, and during the application process, you’ll need to provide your relevant licenses or certifications. With this short task site, you can work as many hours as you’d like; log in wherever you have some free time. According to their website, top earners can make $2,000-$7,000 per month; monthly payments are distributed via PayPal.

• JustAnswer has an A rating with the Better Bussiness Bureau

If you enjoy talking to people online and would like to help them practice their conversational English skills, check out Cambly . With Cambly, you can work anywhere, anytime, getting paid to talk to others online. You’ll earn $0.17 per minute talking to adults and $0.20 per minute talking to kids. 21. ACD Direct

ACD Direct pays individuals to answer phone calls, email inquiries, and chat messages. Agents can make their own schedules and work as much or as little as needed. New agents earn $0.25 per talk minute and, with bonuses and incentives, can earn up to $0.35 per talk minute; rates vary for chat and email inquiries. With ACD Direct, you’ll work as an independent contractor and receive paychecks twice a month via direct deposit. They currently do not accept workers from California, Delaware, Massachusetts, Louisiana, West Virginia, Wyoming, Vermont, Washington, and South Dakota.

22. User Interviews

User Interviews recruits individuals from the US, Canada, Australia, South Africa, Germany, France, and the UK to complete online surveys, focus groups, diary studies, online interviews, and user tests. Assignments vary in length from 10 minutes to a few hours, and pay averages $40-$200 depending on the length and qualifying criteria. Most participants can qualify for a study in less than 24 hours.

Upwork is a freelance platform where small business owners can post tasks and projects that they need to have completed. Some projects pay by the hour, and others pay a fixed price based on the project. The main job categories include IT, design, sales and marketing, writing and translation, admin and customer support, and finance and accounting. Once you find a task that appeals to you, send your proposal to the business owner and wait to see if you’re chosen for the assignment. While some gigs are low-paying, you can earn good money by establishing yourself as a reliable and talented freelancer. With Byron , you can work on administrative tasks any time of the day or night. According to their website, some assistants work one hour per month, while others work up to 160 hours per month. To apply, you must be a US resident, have at least five years of administrative experience, and a college education. Depending on your experience, Byron pays $20-$28 per hour every two weeks via PayPal.

Last Words About Short Task Jobs

A few last words about micro-task sites.

There are other micro job sites out there, but not all are reputable. If you find another short task site, please do your research to ensure that they are legit and worth your time. Trustpilot, Glassdoor, Indeed, and the BBB are excellent places to search for reviews. Also, look to see when the app or website was last updated. Apps and websites that are sitting on the web stagnant are susceptible to hackers placing viruses, malware, and trojans which can potentially steal your personal information.

Because opportunities will not always be available, you should consider signing up for multiple sites. This way, you have a better chance of consistently having tasks to choose from. But before you register, you’ll want to create an email account just for these opportunities. Many of these sites send a lot of emails, and it will be easier to manage if you have a separate email account just for your short task jobs.

All of these are independent contracting roles, so you’ll need to set aside money for self-employment taxes.

Lastly, short tasks will not make you rich, but they are an easy way to earn a little extra cash without having to get a job. After all, you’re most likely online, so instead of scrolling through Facebook or Instagram, use your time to make some extra money.

Great article! You did not mention Buddy Marketing by the way, it’s a platform also for people to complete simple tasks and the payment is very good. Oh my goodness I do not know if it is me or what but CrowdFlower is horrible! I tried it just now because of the recommendation and I couldn’t log in to the task. It said it couldn’t find my email address. I don’t know if they need to update the script on their site or what (which looks criminally old BTW) but I’m going to try out OneSpace first. I have been a VA for over 6 years. Recently Upwork (formerly Odesk) has changed it policy and I found out I can no longer work when I came back from a hiatus. The nice thing about Upwork is that people from all over the world can work here for people all over theworld too. Can you please recommend work sites like this? I found out that many US based work from home do not hire people outside the US and you need a 1099. I love working online and on graveyard shifts. Tips are highly appreciated ( I did look up the other websites mentioned above).

I use Field Agent, the jobs vary in what is asked; the key is to reserve the assignment as quickly as possible and then complete the job. Somethings have been difficult to complete with small children (i.e. beer store audit), however I sometimes just pop them in the shopping cart while I complete the assignment.

Spare5 is another great option. I’m from Venezuela, and as you well know, is very difficult for me to get dollars, so I started to looking a way to make money just using my computer. Spare 5 is a short task site too, and you can download the app for Iphone on the app store and also work from a computer, in its web app. Tasks are very intuitive and each one has instructions, in case you can’t understand or just don’t know how to do it.

To sign up: open spare5.com, then click on “start tasking”, select “launch webtasks” and fill the blank spaces. I write this because at first I didn’t know where to sign up, just in case anyone could have the same confusion as me.

CampusTasker is another great Task site. CampusTasker is a site built for college students (Taskers) wanting to make a little extra cash doing odd jobs. Taskers can create accounts and list their skills, task requesters can then post tasks they need done and Taskers are then able to “Bid” on the tasks that they wish to perform.

I think micro-tasks are great for beginners! They don’t take any special skills and they’re a good way to earn money in between looking for jobs, polishing your resume, and interviewing.

And if you use Task Rabbit — you can make pretty decent money — although you won’t be working online.

You decide your own schedule, choose the tasks and how many you want to do. The pay depends on how fast you work but good workers and big tasks can earn an average of $9 an hour. You get paid seven days after the job’s completion, either to PayPal or a bank account.

5. OneSpace

Another quick task site doing surveys, copywriting, quality assurance, foreign language transcription and more. If you pass qualifying tests you can work on higher paying tasks.

This site pays you daily after approving your completed work. Pay is usually not more than 10¢ each task, but for writing tasks the pay is about  2¢ to 3.5¢ a word.

6. Fancy Hands

Fancy Hands is more of a virtual assistant portal and you can work on any device on your own schedule to assist people with two types of tasks – standard and live.

Standard tasks are those posted that need to be answered within 24 hours (earlier is best), and live tasks are where you’re connected to a client right away through SMS text or web chat.

Each task usually only takes 20 minutes but some can be longer. Simple things such as making appointments, researching quotes, making a trip itinerary, and other similar work. Tasks are worth anywhere from $3.00 to $7.00 per task

The jobs on this site aren’t exactly short tasks. But you can work as a transcriber, translator, or captioner. You can create your own schedule, work anytime, and pick your projects.

The pay range for translators is 5¢ to 7¢ per word. For transcribers, it’s.40¢ to 65¢ per audio minute, and for closed captioners, it’s 40¢ to 75¢ per audio minute. Deposits are made to your PayPal account weekly.

8. User Testing

This is a different type of task site where your job is to test various websites. You work on their platform and surf a client’s website and see how well you can navigate around. You’ll need a PC or a Mac and a working microphone for this job.

Website testers get paid $10 for each completed test. A test consists of a 20-minute recording and answers to four follow-up written questions.

9. Rapid Worker

This site is geared towards students to earn money doing quick online tasks. The online tasks include: voting on YouTube, following someone on social media, posting reviews, blogging about a client’s product, signing up for online games, creating emails, and many more.

You get paid when the client marks the completed task as “satisfied”, otherwise you won’t get paid. Payment depends on the task but usually is about $1 – $3 per hour. Payments are made 8 days after you request a withdrawal.

10. Click ‘n Work

This is a global company that has online tasks in data entry, research, interviewing and other professional related jobs. These are more stringent and top professional work tasks so you do have to pass specific qualifying tests to be accepted for certain tasks though.

Pay depends on the clients offers but two factors affect the rate – the more skilled and experienced needed the higher the pay, and the urgency to complete the task. You send Click ‘N Work your invoice at the end of the month and they calculate the rest and the funds are either deposited into your bank account or by check.

Instead of doing tasks on this website, you earn money by giving advice through chat, phone or by answering questions that have been posted online. Questions relating to cars and trucks, cell phones, appliances, clothing, art and media, social media, and pretty much anything out there.

You work your way up several “levels” and earn points as well and your advice has to be “liked” in order to get paid. Pay is between $2 and $10 depending on the mode through which the questions are answered.

13. GigBucks

This site is similar to Fiverr where you offer gigs as a tech-savvy or creative person. Gigs such as digital marketing, programming, singing, music gigs, translation, SEO marketing and other professional jobs.

Payments are usually around $5 but can go as high as $50 depending on the task performed.

14. Just Answer

This is an expert answer site for professionals. You answer questions posted by users and if your answer is satisfactory, you get paid. They are always looking for experts in a variety of categories such as law, taxes and finance, medicine, mechanical and electronical, computers, and more.

The pay depends on the number of questions you answer but they claim that top experts can earn thousands of dollars a month. A bonus for working here is that you can earn a $50 Amazon card for referring other experts to this site.

15. Humanatic

The only task offered on Humanatic is reviewing and sorting phone calls. You can review calls at anytime on your own schedule, but the amount of calls available to review depend on the time of day, their largest volume of calls is between 7 am – 7 pm Eastern time.

The pay varies depends on your skill level and what type of phone call was reviewed. You can make anywhere from $1 to $4.50 an hour and payment are to your PayPal once you accumulate $10.

16. Micro Workers

There’s a huge variety of tasks offered on this site, anything from surveys, data mining, content moderation, data annotation, categorization, and research among others.

You do need to keep up a certain “success rate” in order to continue working here. You can climb different levels to earn more, but the average admitted by current workers is about $5 – $7 an hour. Payments are sent twice a week on Wednesdays and Sundays.

17. OneSpace

CrowdSpace is slowly becoming OneSpace, the work you’ll find on OneSpace are similar to those posted at Amazon Mturk but offer more tasks, like transcription, image tagging, web categorization, accounting and more business and professional tasks.

The pay is the same as on CrowdSpace – about 10¢ each with writing being between 2¢ a word to 3.5¢ a word.

18. Figure Eight

Lastly, this site is formerly known as CrowdFlower, Figure Eight offers tasks such as categorizing social media, moderate content, transcribe audio, and more.

The pay on this site averages between $2- $3 per hour, but the more skilled you are, the more tasks you can accomplish and it’s possible to earn $500 a month.

It’s possible to join several sites and designate some time to each one for more earning opportunities in tasks you prefer to work on. As some of these sites mentioned, it’s possible to make full-time earnings but the reality is a lot less. They’re still good for making some extra money in your spare time though.

Remotasks Review: Can You Really Make $720 a Week From Home?

Remotasks is a new side hustle platform, where you can get paid to complete short tasks online.

“Take an exam, do a task, get paid!” the site promises.

In this post, I’ll break down each of those steps and share my experience in trying to make money on Remotasks.

Our AI overlords still need some human guidance to get smarter. Remotasks pays you — up to $18 an hour — to provide that guidance.

• Work from anywhere, whenever you want
• Decent earning power and task availability
• Challenging tasks that use your brain
• Somewhat tedious onboarding process
• Confusing interface

What is Remotasks?

Is remotasks legit, how much can you make on remotasks, who is eligible for remotasks, getting started with remotasks, completing your skills assessment, can you do remotasks on your phone, rating / ranking, response writing, response rewriting, prompt writing, my experience with remotasks so far, the bottom line: is remotasks worth it, editing and proofreading, serious about making extra money.

Per the site: “Remotasks is a platform that allows you to create data for and directly influence the next generation of AI models, all while earning in your spare time.”

What does that mean? For the time being, our AI overlords still need some human guidance to get smarter. Remotasks pays you to provide that guidance, in 3 main types of tasks:

• Data Generation : Creating original content, like responses to questions or prompts. 
• Evaluation : Choosing the best response from a list or pair of options.
• Rewriting : Editing and improving a prompt response.

Remotasks is a legit GPT — “get paid to” — site where participants can earn small amounts of money for doing work online. 

The platform is owned by San Francisco-based company Scale AI , which was founded in 2016 and raised a measly $600 million in venture capital . 

Having drawn criticism from paying super low wages to workers in the Philippines , Remotasks seems to have refocused on higher-paying work.

Remotask workers can expect to earn an average of $15-18 an hour, based on your skills, speed, and availability. The challenge is there isn’t always tasks to work on, so it can be difficult to earn a consistent income from the site.

Remotasks takes that $18/hr figure and multiplies it by a hypothetical 40-hour workweek to claim you can earn “up to $720 a week.” While technically possible, it may not be realistic.

Still, it is a viable online side hustle , and the company has paid out over $15M to taskers.

On top of that, the hourly rates are better than you’ll find on other micro-tasking sites like Mechanical Turk .

Remotasks accepts taskers from 90+ countries around the world, but you do need to be able to read and write English at “an introductory college level.”

After you create your account, Remotasks asks for some basic demographic info, including:

• Your country
• State of residence
• Education level
• Educational background

To get paid, you’ll need a PayPal or Airtm account.

Before you can do any tasks (or earn any money), you’ll need to complete the 35-min Introduction to Remotasks training. (It took about 5 — but not sure if I missed something!)

You’ll also need to verify your identity and complete a brief security training. The identity verification process is done securely through the 3rd-party vendor, Persona . 

The next phase of Remotasks is the mandatory Skills Assessment. This is a series of “tests” designed to make sure you can read, write, and rate at the level they’re looking for.

The good news is that several of these tasks are paid. There are 5 sections in all:

• Training and Examples (Required. Estimated time to complete: 1 hour)
• Rating Test (Required. 30 minutes to complete. Pays $10* for passing)
• Response Editing (Optional. 40 minutes. Pays $40 to pass this and/or the Writing assessment)
• Response Writing (Optional. 60 minutes. Pays $40)
• Your Preferences (Required. 5 minutes)

The Response Editing and Writing assessments aren’t required, but Remotaskers who complete them will be eligible for “ significantly more work” on the platform and earn higher hourly rates.

How hard are the tests? According to the site, you should be able to pass without a problem if you read and write at “an introductory college level.”

The creative writing part was the hardest for me. My prompt asked me to write a 500-word retrospective from the point of view of a woman anxious about having her consciousness uploaded to the virtual reality world. 

I do a lot of writing but dystopian sci-fi isn’t my normal genre!

(Still, I was pretty proud with what I came up with!)

*To prevent people from taking the training and running, these training payments only “unlock” after you complete 12 tasks on the platform.

When you finish, you’ll reach a screen like this:

Spoiler alert: I passed! Phew.

No. The company “strongly suggests” completing the work on a desktop or laptop computer for “a better tasking experience.”

The first task I was assigned also required using Hubstaff time-tracking software on my computer.

Types of Tasks

Remotask has several different types of tasks you can get paid for. I’ll break those down here.

For rating and ranking tasks, you’ll evaluate 2 responses to a prompt. Do they follow the instructions? Which one is better?

For each of these, you’ll have to determine whether the prompt is looking for a creative or factual response.

For factual responses, you’ll base your rating on:

• completeness
• conciseness
• spelling and grammar
• formatting and coherence
• tone appropriateness

For creative responses, you’ll also be on the lookout for:

• creativity and complexity
• development of ideas
• sophistication

In most cases, there’s a sliding-scale rating tool and a text input box for you to explain your rating.

I find these the most challenging and time-consuming, because you have to create a response from scratch. Sometimes that requires outside research and fact-finding, and other times it requires a lot of creativity .

But that’s also what makes AI so helpful — it saves a lot of that time!

For the rewriting or editing tasks, you’ll try and improve existing AI responses.

As a former book editor, I like these a lot. In some cases, you’ll add additional context, correct factual errors, omit unnecessary sections, or make formatting and structure changes.

Based on what I’ve seen so far, prompt writing tasks are the least common type of task on Remotasks. But in this scenario, you’d be in charge of writing clear and concise practice prompts for the AI.

After completing the training, I was assigned a project right away. Still, that required even more training (up to 3 hours), which was unclear whether or not that time would be paid.

Remotasks asked me to install Hubstaff and begin tracking my time for that project, but nowhere does it make any mention of what hourly rate (if any) they’re paying for it.

So far, I’ve earned $15.59 in exchange for about an hour of logged time in Hubstaff:

A few days later, Remotasks paid me the $15.59 via PayPal.

My plan is to keep chipping away at it so I can hopefully unlock my training payouts and have more to report back here shortly.

Remotasks is a viable way to earn extra money from home.

It’s best for people with strong English reading and writing skills, and the hourly earning rate is decent — up to $18 an hour, or perhaps even higher if you’re really fast.

(That’s WAY higher than other “make money online sites” like Slicethepie .)

But the work isn’t brainless — it would be hard to multitask while doing any of this.

The other drawback is you’re still trading time for money. If your end goal is to build wealth and escape the rat race , Remotasks probably isn’t the answer. 

Remotasks Alternatives

When it comes to making money online for beginners , Remotasks is just one option.

Here are some alternatives to consider if you don’t qualify for Remotasks or find the onboarding too tedious.

Your easiest remote side hustle option may be to pick up some flexible, part-time work.

This is where FlexJobs comes in — it’s the leading work from home jobs site.

With over 50 career categories, FlexJobs has jobs ranging from entry-level to executive and freelance to full-time.

They charge a nominal monthly fee to access their listings, but you’ll easily earn that back and then some with one job.

When I filtered to only part-time positions, I found over 1,000 remote jobs!

Prolific is similar to Remotasks in that you can get paid for quick online tasks and surveys. The payouts are slightly lower, but I found it much faster to get started with.

One of my favorite online side hustles was editing and proofreading non-fiction books for self-published authors. If you enjoy the response re-writing tasks on Remotasks, you might consider becoming a freelance editor.

In my case, I found clients through Fiverr , Facebook groups for authors, a self-publishing training program, and word of mouth.

My rates were generally between $0.01 and $0.02 per word, which worked out to  around $30 an hour.

If you don’t want to stress about finding clients on your own, here are some companies that offer remote editing and proofreading jobs:

• Edit 911  – Edit dissertations, theses, and books. This one requires extensive experience, education, and accomplishments.
• Enago  – Edit academic papers from a wide range of subject areas.
• ProofreadingPal.com  – Proofread and edit of all types of documents, from academic and business to books and resumes. Top editors earn $500 to $3000 a month. 
• ProofreadingServices.com  – Full-time and part-time proofreading remote jobs, with pay from $19-46/hr. Accepts applicants from all countries.
• Scribendi  – Enjoy more of a community feel since this freelance editing job includes working with other staff members. Payment varies per project. 
• Wordvice  – Part-time editor positions. The workload fluctuates seasonally. Graduate degree required.

A good question before we begin is, “ How Do I Get Paid for These Simple Tasks? ”

It might seem a little counterintuitive. After all, if the tasks are so simple, why pay someone else to do them?

The deal is that a lot of these tasks are simple and tedious. But they are complicated enough that machines can’t be taught to do them. So the work is passed off to you, the internet worker.

Simple work for simple pay, but it still needs a human at the helm.

They pay you to complete all kinds of simple short tasks for their clients including Pinterest, IBM, Microsoft, Expedia and other major brands.

Here are a few examples:

Annotate images: Basically, describe the elements in an image

Isolate elements: All you have to do is find the edges of an object.

Provide keywords: Add keywords to pictures so computers can know what the pictures are about

Assess language: Read a conversation or listen to an audio file and describe its meaning, tone, content and or attitude.

These are really easy tasks that can be done from anywhere and anytime you have a few minutes to spare.

This is a site that pays you to do really simple tasks like installing apps, completing trial offers, taking surveys and more.

5. Panda Research

Panda Research pays you for reading emails taking surveys, signing up for free trials and even referring your friends.

7. Zoombucks

Kicking off the list is ZoomBucks, one of the quintessential micro task sites.

While they’re not as popular as ‘The King,’ Swagbucks , they still pull a very respectable amount of traffic.

You can do all the usual micro tasks here. Things like taking surveys, playing games, watching videos, doing little tasks and checking out offers.

While ZoomBucks doesn’t break the mold, it is very reliable and easy to use.

8. User Testing

This is one of the best sites that pay you to test websites.

You’ll be asked to record yourself (using screen-capture) on a website, speaking about your experience as you go.

If you make a 10-20 minute video, you’ll get paid $10 (or $15 for a mobile test.)

9. TaskRabbit

TaskRabbit isn’t all-online, strictly speaking. Instead, it’s a hub to get tasks you can do around town.

While the website is online, you’ll almost definitely be mobilizing in real life to go do your task. It can be anything from fixing a sink, buying groceries, making a coffee run, or anything in-between.

A great option for more social people, especially if you live in a densely populated area.

10. Swagbucks

The aforementioned “King of Micro Tasks,” Swagbucks is a hugely popular site where people go to make money from a variety of activities.

They have a point system much like many sites do, but no payment schedule. Simply redeem the points whenever you have enough.

There’s a lot of stuff you can do on this site. Games, shopping, videos, searching the web– you name it.

Swagbucks also has a very popular mobile app so you can earn on the go.

A site for task-tasks that will probably require a little bit more time and attention.

You can choose between design, research, writing or data entry.

The great thing is that you get better pay here in return for contributing your skills to these group tasks, so you will be more engaged and better compensated than other sites.

The downside is that it has less ‘stop and go’ freedom.

12. Shopkick

This is a smartphone-dependent task service.

Basically, you earn points for going to stores.

The GPS on your phone coordinates with the app itself, you get compensated, and it’s that simple.

There are a ton of participating companies: Old Navy, Target, Best Buy, Macy’s, Mobil, just to name a few.

Not only do you get points just for walking in, but you can also make points for scanning barcodes and making purchases.

13. Skyword

A twice-monthly paying writing service. Great for beginning writers.

You make $10 per article and a small percent of the traffic revenue (ad revenue.)

It’s not going to stuff your wallet, but it’s actually a pretty good way for a writer to get some experience.

14. Points2Shop

While this site has a shopping and rewards focus, you can still get paid for doing things like watching ads and taking surveys.

It’s a good, but if not ‘standard’ micro task site.

15. RapidWorkers

A site for marketing-focused micro tasks, the goal of RapidWorkers is to help people grow their site’s presence.

You might be asked to do things like social media actions, following or liking or tweeting, and you can get paid out immediately to PayPal as soon as you make $4.

Users of Microworkers may notice that the layout is similar. Indeed, RapidWorkers’ interface was completely copied from MicroWorkers!

NeoBux is practically the definition of a micro task site. It’s all about ads, so you click through ads of various types and make a few cents every time.

The pay is micro-sized, as are the tasks.

A great mindless way to rack up some money when you’re not looking to get too deep into anything.

Similar to the functions of RapidWorkers, MiniJobz is primarily focused on social media actions as their micro-tasks.

Important to note is that they do not pay via PayPal, but rather MoneyBookers or Payza.

You can cash out at $5.

This is an alternative to Amazon mTurk that is available internationally and pays out to PayPal and Payza.

The payment is low-key for easy work, but you will have less competition than on mTurk (no more having a job expire before you can accept it.)

The downside is that since it isn’t as big a site, you won’t see as many tasks here.

Another very solid micro task site.

You have the usual options, surveys, games, web searching, shopping.

There are certain companies which pay a lot of money out to InboxDollars, so you may see a lot of their ads on the site.

One of the definite ‘must-try’ sites, it’s rather popular in micro task circles.

20. GigWalk

GigWalk is an app-based, real world micro-task workforce.

It is the sort of service where you can get paid for doing small, on-the-street tasks. That could be anything from snapping a picture of a geographic landmark or scanning a street sign with your phone.

Like TaskRabbit, GigWalk is only available in certain cities, sorry to the rural readers out there!

21. FusionCash

FusionCash is another platform similar to InboxDollars or SwagBucks that allows you to make money doing short, simple online tasks.

They offer $5 just for signing up, and after that, you can make anywhere from 25¢ to $30 per offer, which is paid out to PayPal. They also offer options to cash out via direct deposit or check, which is a deal-maker for some.

This is a BBB-certified business, so you don’t need to be concerned about scams.

Even still, if you’re nervous about using your credit card, you can always avoid the options that require it. They’re marked with a “CC.”

A site that has really been making waves in the online money making world.

Fiverr isn’t strictly a micro task site since it requires that you self-start a bit. Like Gig Bull, you put up a service and set your price, with the base price being $5.

You can then try to get people to buy more expensive services.

I’ve written about Fiverr before , so I won’t get too into it here. There are a lot of ways to go about succeeding with Fiverr, though.

Make sure you are selling a task that you can pull off frequently and (relatively) easily.

23. Field Agent

FA is an app-based service that wants you to do little tasks around town like checking price, checking shelves, or taking pictures of products.

Each task pays between $3 and $12 which is paid out to PayPal.

Unfortunately, this service is only available to iPhone users, so Android users won’t be able to get in on the action.

24. EasyShift

EasyShift is kind of like Field Agent, except you take on the work in ‘shifts.’ That means that you take on a variety of tasks at once and attend to all of them while you’re out and about.

It takes 48 hours to verify, but then you’ll be credited and able to pay out to PayPal.

The nice thing is that this is available to users of iPhones and Android devices, so all smartphone users can do shifts while they’re out.

25. Click N Work

A data entry/micro-task focused site that allows people to work from around the world.

These guys are going to be asking you to do web-specific work, so there won’t be any leaving the house as with some of the previous entries.

The payment can fluctuate quite a bit by task, so make sure you seize on the best-paying jobs when you can.

26. Crowdtap

The first thing you’ll notice about Crowdtap is that you are asked to link your Facebook account to it.

This is good if you were looking to avoid making your own sign-in.

Since Crowdtap is a US-based company, you’ll need to live in the States to take advantage of this service.

Crowdtap will ask you to do tasks like EasyShifts or Field Agent, product research and feedback types of things.

Of course, you’ll also need a smartphone to get started.

27. CrowdSource

The first thing to say about CrowdSource is that they’re a well-trusted company.

When you go to do work for them, you’ll likely be routed through Amazon mTurk, which means you need to live in the US.

They offer above-minimum wage payment for writers and editors.

Another thing to say about CrowdSource is that their entrance tests are *tough.*

I had tried to apply here to test it out a little while back, and I wasn’t able to clear through their examinations. They are looking for you to follow the style guide to a T.

28. ClickWorker

One of the up-and-coming microtask platforms that seeks to dethrone mTurk, Clickworker is based in Germany (though it does have an English section of the site.)

You’ll need to give them some real information to get started, tax information and the like, as well as passing some entrance tests.

After that, you’ll get access to their microtasks as well as the ability to sign up for the UHRS program, which is by far the best pay available through ClickWorker (though several other sites also use UHRS.)

29. Amazon Mechanical Turk (mTurk)

If Swagbucks is the “king of micro tasks”, then it might be right to call mTurk “the queen”.

More realistically, the truth is that mTurk is a more serious, more demanding online work platform that is aimed towards more committed workers.

Companies come to mTurk to get US citizens to do their micro-tasks for them.

You can find very high-paying work on the site. I myself have done hour-long transcriptions that paid upwards of ~$40 (though they took much longer than an hour to do.)

You can make a pretty fair amount of money on mTurk, but it will require honing some skills first.

The tasks can be very difficult when you start out, compared to the pay.

30. Appen (Appen Butler Hill)

Finishing off the list is Appen, one of the well-known international ‘language solutions’ and translations companies that hire people to work from home .

While they are looking for translators and other types of bilingual users, there are sometimes microtasks available for those who are capable of committing to a full translation at the moment.

The pay is small, but the tasks tend not to be very difficult compared to micro tasks from other services.

31. Keep Rewarding

This is the site for you!

You get paid for shopping online, clicking on ads, filling out surveys, watching videos and much more.

It is one of the few international rewards sites meaning you can use to make extra money from anywhere in the world.

How do you get paid?

Payment is generally on the low end, with the expectation that you will be doing a lot of work and adding up all your earnings.

It will usually be a few cents a job though on certain occasions you may find yourself making as much as a few dollars a job (these are usually longer per-task, though.)

Pay schedules are entirely dependent on the site itself.

First, most sites have a ‘ payout minimum ,’ or a set amount of money you need to earn before you’ll be compensated.

In addition to this, a lot of sites have their own payment schedule. While some sites will let you cash out whenever you reach the minimum, others will auto-cash out at a certain time as long as you have the minimum amount necessary.

You’ll almost definitely be making more money over time than you will initially.

Doing these tasks is a skill that you’ll get better at with time, so it’s only natural that your rate of pay will go up.

MobileWorks

MobileWorks.com, not to be confused with MobileWorks.org, is a subunit of the ‘Lead Genius’ company, and they specialize in Lead Generation.

While that’s a fancy name, it refers to a similar type of data hunt and entry that you could end up doing on other sites. A very formal service for doing micro tasks.

Gig Coin is something like a mini-oDesk. You bid for jobs like a freelance website, and the tasks might be anything from designing a logo to writing a blog post.

You get paid in cash that goes to PayPal with a cashout minimum of $5 (the great news about that is that Gig Coin covers the transfer fees instead of charging you.)

If you want to bid on the go, you can even download their app from the app store (iOS only.)

This is an interesting site that lets you sell your services (whatever those are) in certain increments. It brings to mind an immediate comparison of Fiverr. The difference here is there are many static increments: $3, $5, $6, $9, $12, $15, $27, $45, or $90.

The increment system that GigBull uses is, in some ways, superior to the Fiverr system.

Since the site has its own function for setting a $90, it isn’t as difficult to advertise a higher-priced service on this site!

Click Chores

Another mTurk-like site that benefits from the fact that it is internationally available, Click Chores is a great option for those living outside the U.S. that are looking to make money with microtasks.

Agent Anything

Agent Anything is another out-and-about task service where you bid on the ability to do simple tasks like laundry and coffee runs.

Strangely, they ask that you be a college student to sign up, so that may limit your qualifications.

This company was actually acquired by CrowdSource a while ago and it has since merged with CrowdSource.

Writers can check here for work if they’re willing to pump out content.

CloudCrowd offers three varieties of writing-based work: ‘General’ writing, ‘Marketing’ writing, and editing. Payment is made via PayPal same-day as you turn it in.

Scam warning

Unfortunately, there are a lot of scam sites out there as well that try to mimic legit sites in order to take money from you.

One of them seems to be 1 Dollar Tasks. Every review I read of that site, points to it being a scam. Stay away from it and any other site like that.

Make sure you do your research before joining any site.

Is getting paid for completing short tasks even worth it?

I would definitely say yes.

These sites offer  good ways to make extra pocket change .

Sure, you won’t make a living, but every little bit helps. So it’s not a waste of time. It just isn’t good enough pay to quit your day job, that’s all.

I really like micro task sites and I’m glad that they exist.

In my opinion, the best way to use these sites is to make them a passive part of your day. Maybe you use Field Agent when you go downtown to get food, or you get on ClickWorker while you’re waiting for your pizza to get cooked. Integrating the services into your routine makes them seem less difficult and strenuous.

Now my phone is blowing up with calls from all these education, insurance, and pyramid scheme offers. So annoying. I cancelled both accounts, since I’m not sure which one screwed me over.

I have been a member of both sites for years and they have never done that. Are you sure you didn’t complete any of those education related offers? Normally those offers require you to give them your contact info so they can contact you about their college courses and so on. So if you did do those offers, you gave them permission to contact you. If you didn’t, then yeah that’s just not right for them to contact you.

I’m actually shocked that you describe Swagbucks as the king of micro tasks. While the site isn’t bad it definitely would not be one that I would describe as the king! I have joined many of the sites on your list an many that you don’t have listed and of all of them the one I would say is with out a doubt the king is instagc They have so many more ways to earn cash than Swagbucks does, offers, clicks, surveys, downloads, etc. They also are partnered with Crowdflower which is a great task site that pays very well with the potential to earn a ton of cash especially if you’re a level 3 which is their highest badge. They offer the best ways to redeem your cash with the highest amount of gift cards that you can redeem your points for out of any site that i’ve seen along with direct deposit, e-check, and paypal. Minimum cashout amount for paypal is $1 and e-check and direct deposit are $5. Another great thing about this site that sets it far apart from Swagbucks is that when you redeem your points for gift cards you have instant access to them. No waiting a few days like with Swagbucks or a lot of other sites. Paypal is also instant as long as your redemption is $25 or less. Anything over $25 can take 1-3 days but in my experience most times it’s only a few hours. I have made so much money with this site that I don’t need to have a job. My average daily earnings is usually $25 but I have days where I make a lot more. Just yesterday I made $50 in only a few hours just from doing a few surveys and doing jobs on Crowdflower. If you’re looking for a great site like many of the ones listed here where you can actually make a lot of cash and can get instant access to it definitely check out the link and sign up! Once you try this site you definitely will agree that it out ranks all the others on this list especially Swagbucks which I would rate at the bottom of my list.

More a survey aggregator, Freecash.com is a “get paid to” (GPT) site that partners with several reputable survey providers like Pollfish and Bitlabs, allowing users to make money taking surveys online.

What makes the platform appealing is that surveys are just one of several ways to make an extra — or several hundred — buck(s). Testing apps or websites, signing up for offers, and taking quizzes are but a few of the many other ways users can earn. In fact, they have over 5,000 different offers users can complete to unlock free cash.

New users will earn a free $1 merely for creating an account and verifying their email address, and get to open a “Free Case” for a chance to win $250 more. 

While not all of them will be relevant to you, it’s not uncommon to see some tasks with earnings of $100 or more, assuming the exact criteria or met.

After 21 years in business, Pinecone Research has earned a spot among some of the highest-rated paid survey sites. Pinecone Research is owned by The Nielsen Company, which holds a rating of A+ with the BBB.

Pinecone Research members influence future products and services every time they complete an online survey. Each survey pays 300 points, worth $3, and should take only a few minutes, according to the company.

You can also get paid to test new products as a member of Pinecone Research. You’ll be paid between $3 and $5 to complete a short report on each product. You might even be allowed to keep the product after the study is complete.

Pinecone Research is one of the more elite survey sites and limits its members based on demographics. You can apply for membership to see if you qualify.

8. Survey Junkie

Survey Junkie is another leader in the survey industry, with a BBB rating of B. The company has been in business since 2011 and serves more than 20 million members.

Survey Junkie is best known for the basics and mainly offers paid survey opportunities. This site tracks earnings in the form of points. Every 100 points equals $1 earned, and it takes a minimum of 500 points (or $5) to cash out via PayPal or with e-gift cards.

The site does offer some users the chance to earn money testing products, participating in online or in-person focus groups , or via phone surveys. It pays between $5 and $150 per task, but that option is extremely limited at this time.

Start making money within five minutes when you sign up and complete your profile . Most of the surveys are fairly easy to complete. You also won’t be forced to sign up for something or buy anything in order to complete a survey.

Our favorite part about the platform is that they award you a nominal number of points even if you’re disqualified from a survey. You won’t earn the full amount displayed, but it’s better than zero return on your time, as is the case with many other survey sites.

9. American Consumer Opinion

American Consumer Opinion (ACOP) is owned by Decision Analyst, Inc. which has been in business for more than 41 years. The BBB gives this site an A+ rating.

When you sign up for an account with ACOP, you can start your first paid survey in under two minutes. Your first survey pays five points and includes questions regarding your demographic information like marital status and education level. If there are surveys available, you will see them listed in your account.

ACOP keeps things simple and offers nothing more than surveys for money. The company accumulates your earnings in points, and you’ll need to earn 1,000 points, or $10, to cash out.

10. MyPoints

MyPoints, owned by Prodege, LLC, has been in business since 1996, holds a B rating with the BBB, and has paid out more than $236 million to its 10 million members.

With MyPoints , you can take online surveys for money, but the site also has other paid gigs. These include shopping online and in-store, printing and redeeming coupons, watching videos, playing games , and booking travel accommodations. It also gives you five points if you are not qualified to take a survey, with a maximum of 25 disqualification points per day.

All of your earnings through MyPoints accumulate in points. You can claim a $3 gift card once your account reaches 480 points. Or for 15,800 points, you can get a $500 gift card.

Note that points may stretch further depending on where you redeem them. Redeeming points for a prepaid Visa card requires a minimum of 1,500 and is worth 150 points per dollar, or $10.

MyPoints gives $10 Amazon or Visa gift cards to new users. You’ll need to spend $20 or more using MyPoints shopping to redeem this bonus.

Toluna is a market research firm that’s been in business since 1994. It has an A+ BBB rating and a 3.7-star rating on Trustpilot from 10,000 member reviews. 

After you sign up for a free account, you’ll receive a confirmation link in an email that, once you click, will finalize your registration and allow you to start taking surveys. You’ll also earn 500 bonus points just for signing up . 

Each survey Toluna offers is worth between 15 and 50,000 points, depending on the length and time needed to complete the survey. Like other sites, you will have to qualify for surveys. If you don’t qualify, you don’t receive disqualification points. Instead, you’re entered into a sweepstakes. 

The minimum points you need to redeem a reward is 10,000, which lets you plant a tree in Peru, Thailand, or Uganda. For gift card rewards, 30,000 points will get you a $10 gift card to major retailers like Starbucks, Petco, and Kohl’s.

It also refers members to other sites like Survey Junkie, LifePoints, and Pinecone Research. Your earnings from surveys hosted by Survey Club are added to your account in cash, and you can cash out when you earn at least $25.

Survey Club also provides paid focus group opportunities. It reports the average earnings of those who participate as $50 to $200 per hour.

Surveys are on par with industry standard, with opportunities to earn upwards of $2 per completed questionnaire. Payments are processed every two weeks, and you need at least $10 before you can cash out via PayPal.

The primary complaint from former users is losing earnings for inactivity. If you fail to verify your email address, provide incorrect contact information, or don’t log into your account for 60 days, your account might be deactivated. In this case, any earnings you had will be forfeited.

You can reactivate your account within 60 months, but you can’t get back any previous earnings. KashKick wiped inactive accounts right before processing payments, so be sure to log in regularly and verify your email address so you don’t lose your rewards.

For example, YouGov has had data from dozens of polls shared across massive networks like CBS News, Politico, Yahoo, and more, across a variety of topics. Trump and Biden head-to-head numbers, support for IFV, where Haley voters will fall after her dropout, and the Israel-Hamas war are but a few recent hot-button topics they’ve shared data on. 

Members earn points for completing surveys, which can be redeemed for various rewards, including cash and free gift cards . Earnings vary based on survey length and complexity, with YouGov offering a transparent and straightforward platform for users to voice their opinions and earn rewards. Used by more than 2 million members, Crowdtap is a popular paid survey site because it offers more ways to earn than just taking surveys. Member users can also earn points by participating in online discussions, product testing, art and other content submissions, research programs, and more. 

To get started, merely register for a free account . After completing the registration process, you’ll receive an email confirmation. After that, you can begin earning points by taking surveys you qualify for.

Most surveys are worth $0.25 to $0.75, but their homepage suggests you can find surveys for $25, $50, or even more. I recently took surveys for about 90 minutes and earned 1,000 points, good for a $5 gift card, but earnings of just $3.33 per hour.

16. PrizeRebel

Since its debut in 2007, PrizeRebel has paid more than $19 million to its 9 million members.

PrizeRebel’s signup process is quick to complete. You just need to provide your name and email address. After confirming your email address, you can start taking paid online surveys. The first required survey asks for your demographic information and is worth 10 points.

You can cash out when you’ve earned at least 500 points, worth $5. Most surveys pay between 40 and 60 points and can take up to 15 minutes to complete.

PrizeRebel has a unique program that awards members based on the level of earnings. If you earn 4,500 points, you’ll reach Gold level status and receive a 1% bonus to your earnings and a 1% discount on your prize. Platinum level (10,000 points) gets you a 2% bonus and a 2% discount, and Diamond level (16,000 points) gets you a 3% bonus and a 3% discount.

To get paid to take surveys with Opinion Outpost, you will need to complete the initial screening . You’ll have to answer questions about things like your education level, work status, and the number of children you have. Then you’ll complete a questionnaire based on recent events like whether you’ve taken your pet to the vet or watched a movie in theaters. Opinion Outpost will ask duplicate questions along the way to make sure you’re answering honestly.

Most surveys are worth 3 to 30 points. You can cash out for free Amazon gift cards or $10 iTunes or App Store gift cards, or a $10 PayPal credit. Alternatively, at 30 points you can unlock games on Alawar.com or join the MileagePlus Program to use your points toward travel credits. You’ll need at least 105 points to receive 300 Award Miles.

Opinion Outpost offers some of the highest-paying surveys we’ve found. I recently completed a shopping and retail survey and earned $2.50 in under 30 minutes. On a philanthropic note, every month Opinion Outpost makes a donation to the American Red Cross in honor of the time its users take to complete surveys. Its corporate donation does not impact your points balance, but you can use your points to make a separate donation if you’d like.

To get started, you’ll need to complete your member profile and confirm your email address. The company also requires a valid phone number to become a member. Then, you can take surveys that pay up to $50 each. You can also earn up to $25 per time you cash out for reading paid emails.

Panda Research pays members with earnings of at least $50 on the 1st and 15th of each month via PayPal. Note that you will only receive your payments in increments of $50, so if you have total earnings of $110, you will be able to cash out $100 and the balance will carry over to a future payment request.

When to Avoid a Survey Site

Although the sites on our list are trustworthy, you can’t trust every site that claims to pay you to take surveys. Avoid survey sites if they:

🚫 Ask for payment. A legitimate survey site will never ask you to pay to join.

🚫 Ask for private information upfront . You should not be asked to provide your Social Security number unless you’ve earned at least $600.

🚫 Have no history or ratings . Well-established companies are more trustworthy. You can read what real users have to say about them and verify their history of payments and available opportunities.

🚫 Pay too little . Legitimate companies will have some higher-paying opportunities worth completing.

🚫 Have a glitchy or outdated site . Companies that don’t take care of their websites may not take care of their members.

🚫 Make it hard to qualify for surveys . Don’t waste time on a company if it consistently disqualifies you for surveys.

Even if the site seems legitimate, if you’re skeptical about it or it spams you with emails, remove yourself from its list. There are enough quality survey-taking opportunities available that you can avoid ones that annoy you or aren’t a good fit.

Tips for Earning the Most Money

There are a number of things you can do to maximize your earnings when taking surveys for money.

✅ Stick with a few trusted sites. You don’t have to sign up with hundreds of survey sites to earn some cash. Focus on the best, highest-paying options.

✅ Fill out your profile completely. Completing your personal profile on each survey site allows the company to match you with relevant offers. Update your profile if you have a life change, like having a baby, getting a pet, or quitting smoking. You might find yourself eligible for new or different surveys.

✅ Watch the time. Keep track of the time spent completing surveys. You’re not likely to earn a high hourly rate completing easy surveys so, if possible, do surveys when you have small windows of time, like when you’re standing in line to fill a prescription or waiting for a meeting to start.

✅ Answer consistently. Take the time to read each question and respond honestly and consistently across sites. Survey sites compare answers and can disqualify users who appear to be inconsistent in their responses.

✅ Check for free offers. Some survey sites have a “free offers” section where you can earn points for signing up for free trials or newsletters. You can also watch for exclusive bonus opportunities on social media and refer friends to your favorite sites to earn free money or bonus points.

✅ Take the highest-paying surveys first. If you register with multiple websites, you might receive dozens of surveys to choose from. Take a few minutes to estimate your earnings per hour before you start a survey. You may be able to make more by picking the highest-paying opportunities first.

Best Practice for Taking Paid Online Surveys

Even if a survey site is trustworthy, there are still precautions you should take.

• Use a separate email address. Creating a separate email address for survey offers will keep your work and personal inboxes clear of clutter. Plus, if you stop doing surveys, you can stop checking that email account instead of unsubscribing from a bunch of sites.
• Be mindful of what you share. Good survey companies will keep your individual identity a secret. But that doesn’t make it safe to provide them with your Social Security number, driver’s license number, or bank account numbers. Legitimate survey companies do not need this information.
• Use anti-malware software. Anti-malware software can keep your laptop virus-free. If you visit multiple survey sites per day, it’s important to protect your computer from malicious spyware and viruses.
• Take frequent breaks. Completing surveys can be tedious. Take frequent breaks from your screen so that you’re not tempted to rush through surveys and provide wrong or inconsistent answers.
• Fees and false promises. Any survey site that promises you’ll earn thousands per month is either a scam or at least misleading. Make sure the sites you join make realistic statements about your potential earnings and the amount of time it takes to complete surveys. 

Keep Your Expectations Realistic

Paid online surveys are the perfect side hustle for someone looking for an easy gig to do while at home or on the go. If you’re uncomfortable sharing your demographic information or want to earn a high hourly rate, you should consider a different option.

But if you do want to give online surveys a try, be realistic about how much you’ll make. Manage your time wisely so you maximize your earnings, sign up with multiple sites to receive the best opportunities, and research the company before registering.

While there are better ways to make money online , most will require more skill, training, and time than taking surveys for money.

Here's how much money you need to make to be middle class in each US state

• Business Insider analyzed what qualified as middle class across the US.
• Utah, Idaho, and Alaska had the highest share of residents in the middle class.
• Meanwhile, New York, Massachusetts, and Montana had the highest percentages of lower-class residents.

These three charts show how many Americans in each state are in the lower , middle , or upper class — and how much income it takes to qualify for each.

A Business Insider analysis of 2022 US Census Bureau data, the latest year for which data is available, found that while 52.7% of Utah's population fell within the middle class , just 42.3% of New Yorkers were in the middle class . The Pew Research Center defines being middle class as earning between two-thirds and double each state's median income.

In Texas, that's between $48,200 and $144,600, and in Minnesota, middle-class residents make between $54,900 and $164,700.

Americans often debate who truly is in the middle class. According to the Census Bureau, the real median household income nationally was $74,580 in 2022. Still, the median income in a state can be as high as $101,000 or as low as $52,700, meaning that the middle class in one state could be either lower or upper class in another.

Even those who are mathematically in the middle class may not feel like they are. Many on the lower end of the middle class are particularly worried about having enough to meet all their daily needs while saving for retirement. Some families recently told BI that having six-figure household salaries wasn't enough, especially given the costs associated with raising kids.

Meanwhile, even for households making well into the six-figure range, many so-called HENRYs — or high earners, not rich yet — have enough for their daily expenses but feel like their savings would be inadequate for an emergency or job loss. Many splurge on what they think matters like experiences but feel constrained, often putting off having kids or buying a home until they feel more financially stable.

In BI's analysis, only three states had half of households in the middle class: Utah, Idaho, and Alaska. Delaware, Wisconsin, and Wyoming had close to 50% in the middle class.

On the whole, the Midwest was relatively close to half, suggesting more households in these states were clustered around the median, with less income dispersion than more populous states like California or New York.

On the flip side, New York, Louisiana, Massachusetts, and Washington, DC, all had below 44% of households in the middle class, meaning that more residents fell into either the upper or lower classes.

The South had the lowest median household incomes, with most in the middle to high $50,000s. States in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic, such as New Jersey, Maryland, and New Hampshire, had mostly high $80,000s to middle $90,000s.

New York, California, Connecticut, and Virginia had some of the highest percentages of upper-class households, in the 19% to 21% range. Most states were in the 17% to 18% range by that measure, though Alaska, Utah, and Idaho were all below 15%.

To be upper class in states with the 10 highest median incomes, households must make above $178,300 — and must make above $202,000 in Washington, DC. Mississippi had the lowest income needed to be upper class, at $105,400, while West Virginia's figure was $108,600.

These Southern states also had a higher percentage of lower-class households overall compared with other states. New York had the highest percentage at 36.8%, followed closely by Massachusetts, Montana, and West Virginia. Hawaii also had a particularly high percentage, at 36.2%.

Meanwhile, some Western states had percentages as low as 32.5%. Utah, Idaho, and Colorado were in the bottom five for this metric.

What’s the difference between a money market and a checking account?

Learning the differences between a money market account and a checking account can help you manage your finances effectively. Each account caters to different needs and offers unique features that can be beneficial depending on your financial objectives.

What is a money market account?

A money market account is a type of deposit account offered by banks and credit unions. It has a blend of savings and checking account features. Like a savings account, a money market account earns interest over time , typically at a higher rate than a standard savings or checking account.

However, unlike a traditional savings account, a money market account often comes with check-writing privileges and a debit card, which gives you more flexibility to access your funds. Still, it’s worth noting that withdrawals and transactions are usually limited to a certain number per month.

The best money market accounts offer more than 5 percent APY. This is well above the national average, which is 0.46 percent APY as of this writing.

What is a checking account?

A checking account, on the other hand, is a type of bank account designed for regular transactions. This is the account you would typically use for daily expenses, paying bills and receiving your paycheck. Checking accounts usually come with a debit card, paper checks and unlimited transactions, including deposits, withdrawals and transfers.

“Almost every individual should have a checking account in today’s environment,” says John Jones, an investment advisor representative with Heritage Financial in Newberry, Florida. “These operate for most as a cash flow account where income is deposited and savings, investments, credit cards, loans and expenses are withdrawn.”

While some checking accounts earn interest, the rates are usually much lower than those of money market accounts. However, the primary advantage of a checking account is its high liquidity and unlimited transactions, making it ideal for day-to-day use.

The best checking accounts offer above 2 percent APY. This is higher than the national average, which is 0.08 percent APY as of this writing.

Pros and cons of a money market account

Money market accounts offer several benefits, such as higher interest rates compared to regular savings or checking accounts, access to your funds through checks or a debit card and often safety through Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. (FDIC) or National Credit Union Association (NCUA) insurance.

However, money market accounts come with a few drawbacks as well. These include a potential limit on the number of monthly transactions, higher minimum balance requirements compared to other accounts and potential monthly service fees if the minimum balance isn’t maintained.

Pros and cons of a checking account

Checking accounts are ideal for daily transactions. They provide easy access to your funds with a debit card and checks, typically offer unlimited transactions and some offer rewards or interest. However, the interest rates are generally much lower than those on money market or savings accounts.

Also, some checking accounts may require a minimum balance to avoid service fees, and they may charge for certain services like using out-of-network ATMs or overdrafts.

When opening a checking account, consider your daily banking needs. Look for an account with low or no monthly fees , a wide network of ATMs and good customer service. If you keep a high balance in your checking account, you might also want to look for an account that offers interest or rewards. Finally, convenience features like mobile banking, online bill pay and direct deposit can make managing your money easier.

How does a money market account compare with a savings account and CD?

A money market account is similar to a savings account in that both earn interest and are subject to transaction limits. However, a money market account usually offers a higher interest rate and comes with check-writing privileges and a debit card, unlike most savings accounts.

“They’re dependable but offer lower returns than a diversified portfolio of stocks, bonds, real estate and cash. CDs and high-yield savings accounts are similar in that they’re protected from market fluctuations.”

Here are some of the top savings account APYs available right now:

The Federal Reserve has opted to keep the federal funds rate at a range of 5.25% to 5.50% at its last six meetings. As a result you can still find high-yield savings accounts with APYs as high as 5.55%.

Experts expected several rate cuts to happen later this year, which would prompt savings rates to follow suit. But the most recent Consumer Price Index report revealed inflation rose 3.4% year over year -- down slightly from March’s numbers but still stubbornly higher than the Fed’s 2% target rate. Inflation has eased significantly since 2022, but the timeline for future rate cuts is still unclear. 

Some experts still think rate cuts are possible in 2024, according to Elaine King , a certified financial planner. However, some economists predict that rate cuts are now less likely to happen in 2024 unless inflation begins trending downward soon. Either way, you can expect high savings rates to stick around for the foreseeable future.

The Fed doesn’t directly impact savings rates, but its decisions have ripple effects. For instance, when the Fed raises rates, many banks increase their rates for traditional and high-yield savings accounts, said Lanesha Mohip, a corporate accountant, founder of the Polished CEO and CNET expert review board member. Inversely, when the Fed lowers rates, banks drop savings rates, too.

“When the Fed changes the rates, it impacts everything,” said Mohip. That includes borrowing and savings rates. While taking out a loan or paying back debt may be more expensive, the high rates can also put extra money in your savings. 

Banks can change the interest rates on savings accounts at any time. Since savings rates are variable, your APY will likely go down once the Fed drops rates. But for now, many banks are holding rates steady in anticipation of what the Fed will do next. Based on CNET’s weekly tracking, here’s where rates stand compared to last week:

• High rates: HYSAs often have APYs 10 times higher (or more) than the national average, as tracked by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation.
• Low or no fees: Monthly maintenance fees can eat into your savings. Many online banks can charge low or no fees thanks to their lower operating costs.
• Liquidity: You can access money in your HYSA anytime without penalty (as long as you mind any withdrawal limits). 
• Accessibility: If you open an HYSA at an online bank, you’ll have 24/7 access through its mobile app. You may also have lots of customer service options, including by phone, online chat and secure messaging.
• Low risk: HYSAs are protected by federal deposit insurance if they’re held at an FDIC-insured bank or credit union insured by the National Credit Union Administration. That means your money is safe up to $250,000 per account holder, per account type.

Some accounts have minimum deposit requirements, fees and other charges that can chip away at your savings. 

Here’s everything you should keep in mind when comparing savings accounts: 

• Minimum deposit requirements: Some HYSAs require a minimum amount to open an account -- typically, from $25 to $100. Others don’t require anything. 
• ATM access: Not every bank offers cash deposits and withdrawals. If you need regular ATM access, check to see if your bank offers ATM fee reimbursements or a wide range of in-network ATMs, said Mohip. 
• Fees: Look out for fees for monthly maintenance, withdrawals and paper statements, said Mohip. The charges can eat into your balance.
• Accessibility: If you prefer in-person assistance, look for a bank with physical branches. If you’re comfortable managing your money digitally, consider an online bank.
• Withdrawal limits: Some banks charge an excess withdrawal fee if you make more than six monthly withdrawals. If you think you may need to make more, consider a bank without this limit.
• Federal deposit insurance: Make sure your bank or credit union is either insured with the FDIC or the NCUA. This way, your money is protected up to $250,000 per account holder, per category, if there’s a bank failure.
• Customer service: Choose a bank that’s responsive and makes it easy to get help with your account if you need it. Read online customer reviews and contact the bank’s customer service to get a feel for working with the bank.

Each account received a score between one (lowest) and five (highest).
