Teachers have the option to see correct answers in workbooks.

  • To view answers on a worksheet, click on the menu option in the top right corner that has three lines, also known as a "hamburger" menu, and select Edit.
  • This will open the worksheet to view how it was setup and see correct answers in green.

Students have the option to see correct answers after submitting their work if a worksheet is setup to allow this.

  • ​​​​​​​​​​​​​​On the worksheet in the menu option in the top right corner, select Show Right Answers
  • Choose the option to Add button "Show Right Answers" when the student has finished the exercise is selected
  • Click Save Changes

When the student submits their work, the grading will be displayed on the top left portion of the worksheet along with a button to Show right answers .

1.  Open your Google Form.

2.  Click on "Responses."

3.  After you've opened the Responses tab, you will be able to view answers in three different ways: "Summary," "Question," and "Individual."

4.  Click on the "Summary" tab to view a summary of all answers submitted to your Google Form. These may appear as charts and graphs, or in other formats.

5.  Click on the "Question" tab to view collection data for specific questions on your form. The responses you are viewing will be for the specific question listed in the drop-down menu.

7. Click on the "Individual" tab to view specific respondents' answers to each question. To navigate between respondents, click on the arrows in the top banner.

You can also view answers to your Google Form via a spreadsheet that is automatically saved when creating a Google Form. First, open the Google Form within Google Drive. 

1.  Click on the Responses Tab. 

2.  Select the Google Sheets icon in the top right corner.

To turn on email notifications after respondents fill out your form, all you have to do is click the three-dot icon under the same Responses tab and select "Get email notifications for new responses."

With Google Sheets, you can search text within your spreadsheets in many different ways. Here are some methods you can use.

As a spreadsheet user, you may often see yourself sifting through data rows to find a specific keyword. On smaller spreadsheets, doing this manually is easy. However, with large spreadsheets, this becomes close to impossible.

Thankfully, Google Sheets has several built-in functions that allow you to easily search for data in your spreadsheets.

4 Ways to Search in Google Sheets

There are multiple ways that you can search text in your spreadsheet. We will discuss some of them extensively here. Google Sheets allows you to use formulas and some built-in functions to search text in your spreadsheets. Here are some methods you can use to search text in your spreadsheet.

The ways to search in Google Sheets we’ll cover in this guide are:

  • The find and replace tool
  • The FIND function
  • The SEARCH function
  • The MATCH function

Each performs slightly differently, so checking them all out will help you find the perfect way to search Google Sheets depending on your specific needs. Whether you're just starting out on spreadsheets or are an experienced entrepreneur , learning to search is a very important skill for Google Sheets.

1. The Find and Replace Tool

This feature is built into Google Sheets and looks through the spreadsheet to find the keyword you provide. It provides a few advantages over using formulas to achieve the same purpose, the most prominent of which is case matching. It is also one of the best basic tools in Google Sheets .

To access the Find and Replace feature in Google Sheets :

  • Click on Edit in the top bar of your main Google Sheets screen.
  • Click on Find and replace in the drop-down menu that shows up. This will open a new window in the middle of the screen.

Alternately, you can use the Ctrl + H keyboard shortcut on Windows to do the same thing. On macOS, the shortcut is Cmd + Shift + H .

In the above example, we can find the cells that contain the word "Pencil". In the Find and Replace window, you will see two text boxes: Find and Replace with . In the Find text box, enter your keyword. If you have multiple sheets, choose All sheets in the Search option.

Finally, click on the Find button. This will take you to the first instance of the text in the spreadsheet. You can repeatedly press the button to traverse the spreadsheet to find the keyword.

Alternatively, if you don't plan to replace any data, and you don't need any of the advanced search features, then use the Find feature instead. You can access this by using the Ctrl + F shortcut in Windows. For macOS users, the shortcut is Cmd + F .

2. The FIND Function

You can use this formula to find the position where the string is first detected in the text. This formula is case-sensitive, so ensure the text you enter the formula has the proper case. Here is the syntax for the formula:

The formula uses three arguments. These are:

  • search-for : this is the text you're searching for in the search-text parameter.
  • search-text: this defines the cell or cell range that the function will search to find the text in the search-for parameter.
  • start-at: this is an optional parameter to define the character in the search-text . This defines where the search will be started from.

In this example, we have a sentence in cell A2 . We wish to find the word fox there. Here are the steps to do so:

  • Click on the cell where you wish to input the formula.
  • Type the initial part of the formula, which is =FIND( .
  • Now, type the cell address of the text that you want to search. In this case, it is cell D2 . Alternately, you can also write the text inside quotation marks.
  • Write the cell address containing the text you wish to search. In this case, it is cell A2 .
  • Add a closing bracket.
  • Press Enter to execute the formula.

One thing to note is that this formula is case-sensitive. So if you write “Fox” instead of “fox” then the formula won't work. If you're looking for a similar function that isn't case-sensitive, you can use the SEARCH formula.

Note: If you’re confused by the numerical result in the example, remember the FIND function notes the location of the string, in our case, fox. You’ll notice that the f in fox is the 17 character in the cell (including spaces) hence the result of 17.

3. The SEARCH Function

The SEARCH formula is almost identical to the FIND formula. Here is the syntax for the formula:

As you can see, the SEARCH formula uses the same parameters as the FIND formula. We will use a different case for the search text to demonstrate this formula. Here are the steps to use the SEARCH formula.

  • Type the initial part of the formula, which is =SEARCH( .
  • Now, type the cell address of the text that you want to search. In this case, it is cell D2.

4. The MATCH Function

The MATCH function outputs the position of a value in a defined cell range that matches a value specified by the user. Here is the syntax for the formula:

The formula uses three parameters. These are:

  • key: this is the value that you want to search for. This can be a number, string, or a combination of both.
  • range: this is the 1-dimensional array to search the value within. Note that using a 2-dimensional range will return the #N/A! Error.
  • type: this is an optional parameter that defines the method to search the range.

In the type parameter, you can choose to enter either 1 , 0 , or -1 .

  • 1 is the default and assumes that the range is in ascending order.
  • 0 is used where the range is in no particular order.
  • -1 assumes that the range is in descending order.

Here are the steps you need to follow to use a MATCH formula:

  • Type the initial part of the formula, which is =MATCH( .
  • Now, type the text that you want to search for. In this case, we will write “Desk” including the quotation marks.
  • Add a comma.
  • Write the cell range containing the text you wish to search. In this case, it is the range B2:B31 .
  • Add another comma to separate the parameters.
  • As the data is in no particular order, the third parameter is entered as 0 .

The result is 1 as the first instance of “Desk” is in the first row of the range.

Replacing worksheet name

There is find and replace facility for formulas, values and comments in the dropdown menu 'Look in'. But there is none for sheet name. When a workbook contains some 80 or more ws. it would be better if there is automation facility. or is there some other method to change sheet names?

Excel does not have an easy built-in way to find and replace worksheet names.

It would be possible to use VBA code to do it, but it would be a lot of work.

Things You Should Know

  • Open a new spreadsheet by going to https://sheets.google.com/ in your web browser.
  • Edit an Excel .xlxs file by uploading it to your drive and opening it in Google Sheets.
  • Enter data into cells. Then, adjust the formatting by using the toolbar or Format tab.
  • Share your spreadsheet by clicking the blue Share button in the top-right of the Sheet.

Step 1 Go to Google Sheets.

  • Or, go to https://www.google.com/sheets/about/ and click Go to Sheets .
  • Or, click the 9-dot grid button in the upper-right corner of https://www.google.com/ , Gmail, or any Google web app. Select Sheets from the menu.

Step 2 Open a new spreadsheet.

  • Create new spreadsheet opens a blank spreadsheet.
  • Choose template opens the template gallery, where you can choose a premade layout that fits your spreadsheet needs.
  • You can also open a new spreadsheet from Google Drive by clicking the New button and selecting Google Sheets .

Step 3 Rename your spreadsheet.

  • Alternatively, click New in Google Drive, then File upload .

Step 2 Right-click the Excel file.

  • The .XLSX icon next to the title in the Google Sheets editor indicates that you’re working on an Excel file. If there’s a red dot notification on this icon, there may be a compatibility issue.

Step 1 Enter data in cells.

  • By default, there will be 26 columns (A to Z) and 1000 rows.
  • Add more rows by scrolling to the bottom, entering in an amount next to “more rows at bottom,” and clicking Add .
  • After adding in your data, you can search through the sheet if you’re looking for something specific.

Step 2 Adjust rows and columns.

  • You can add a new column or row to a specific location by selecting any cell in the row/column and clicking the Insert tab. You'll see options to insert rows or columns above or below and to the right or left of the selected cell.

Step 3 Format cells, rows, or columns.

  • You can also use the toolbar above the formula box to make formatting changes to a range of cells.
  • When selecting multiple cells (horizontally or vertically), you can merge them so that they span multiple rows or columns.
  • To adjust the way numbers are formatted, go to the Number subsection in the Format tab. You can format numbers in a variety of ways. For example, selecting “Percent” will show numbers as percentages.

Step 4 Organize data.

  • If your data have column headers, go to Sort range > Advanced range sorting options . Check the “Data has header row” box. When you click the Sort by drop-down menu, you can select a column by its header name.
  • The A to Z and Z to A options are ascending and descending respectively. This sorts numbers low-to-high or high-to-low.
  • Filtering your data is a great way to see temporary views of the dataset without changing the spreadsheet.

Step 5 Insert graphics.

Step 6 Freeze rows and columns.

  • 1 row or 2 rows will freeze the first 1 or 2 rows.
  • 1 column or 2 columns will freeze the first 1 or 2 columns.
  • To freeze more rows and columns, select the cell that you want to freeze up to. Then, select Up to row NUMBER or Up to column LETTER .

Step 7 Use functions.

  • Google Sheets offers most of the same functions found in Microsoft Excel, so those experienced with Excel should find Sheets to be pretty familiar.
  • Advanced users can create their own functions using Google Apps Script. For example, you could create a simple script to add the time and date automatically .
  • IF lets you return a specified value by evaluating a logical expression. This works similarly to using If-Else in Excel .

  • SUM adds multiple cell values together. ( Same as SUM in Excel ).
  • ABS will give you the absolute value of a number.
  • FLOOR rounds a number value down to the closest integer.
  • NPV returns the net present value for an investment given periodic cash flows.

A quick way to search inside all sheets of a Google Sheets spreadsheet at once is to use the "Find and Replace" function. With this, you can search for a keyword in the current sheet, in a specific sheet, or all sheets of your spreadsheet.

To do so, open your favorite browser and visit the Google Sheets site.

Next, open the spreadsheet that you'd like to search within. In the menu bar, click "Edit," and then select "Find and Replace." Alternatively, press Ctrl+h on Windows or Command+Shift+h on Mac.

In the "Find and Replace" window that opens, click the "Find" box at the top and type your search query. Next, click the "Search" drop-down menu and select "All sheets" to search in all sheets. Then, click "Find" at the bottom to start the search.

If Google Sheets finds a match in a sheet, it will open that sheet and highlight the field that includes your query.

If it can't find your searched words in your sheets, it will display an error message.

When you're done, click "Done" in the "Find and Replace" window to close it.

Google saves all your Sheets spreadsheets in Google Drive , which means that you can use Drive's search feature to search inside your spreadsheets. The only issue with this method is that it won't show exactly which sheet matches your search query, only the entire spreadsheet itself.

To get started, load the Google Drive site in a browser. On the main Google Drive page, click the "Search in Drive" box at the top. Type your search query, press Space, and then type this and hit Enter:

Google Drive will look for your typed query in your Google Sheets spreadsheets.

On the search results screen, it will list the spreadsheets that match your search. Double-click any spreadsheet here to open it in the Sheets editor.

Google Forms provides a convenient way to collect data. You can use it to take quizzes and surveys and collect feedback and registration information. However, its capabilities are not just limited to these.

When you connect Google Forms to Google Sheets, you can use the analytical powers of the latter to make powerful calculations from the gathered data.

In this tutorial, we will show you how to connect Google Forms to Sheets. We will show you how to do this both ways:

  • Creating a Google Sheets datasheet and connecting it to your Google form
  • Creating a Google Form from a Google Sheets worksheet

Why Connect Google Forms to Sheets?

Google Forms already comes with a Responses tab, where you can see a summary of the responses received. Although this is quick and convenient, it does not contain as much analytical functionality as you might need. Linking a Google Form to Google Sheets alleviates this issue.

For example, say you’ve collected registration information from attendees of an event. If there are a lot of attendees, you can directly have the data transferred to a spreadsheet, from where you can further process and analyze the information, get insights, create visualizations, and make important decisions based on complex analytics.

Moreover, every time someone submits the form, the data can get automatically updated in the worksheet so that your worksheet is always up-to-date.

Alternatively, say you have a shared worksheet that allows multiple people to enter data. In such cases, since so many people handle the raw data, there is always the possibility of accidental deletions or unintentional changes being made to the original dataset when adding new data.

A safer option would be to connect the sheet to a Google form that lets users enter the same data without touching the original datasheet.

Moreover, the data can be directly validated through the forms, ensuring all the data in the worksheet is in the correct format.

In addition, the form can look attractive with pictures, company branding colors, logos, etc., and may be made more user-friendly, so that non-Google Sheets users can also easily and quickly enter the required data.

The most important advantage when you link a Google form to Google Sheets is that your data will remain in the sheet even when you delete the Google Form.

How to Connect Google Forms to Google Sheets

There are two ways to convert responses from Google Forms into Google Sheets. You can either create a Google Sheets worksheet from a Google form, or create a Google form from an existing worksheet.

Let’s look at how to link Google forms to Google Sheets using both methods.

How to Send Form Responses to a Spreadsheet

Once you have a Google form designed and ready, you can connect it to a Google Sheets worksheet, so that every time a form is submitted the data (along with a timestamp ) directly gets entered into the appropriate columns of the worksheet.

You can either link the Google form to a spreadsheet that already exists or create a new one.

To connect the form to a worksheet, follow the steps shown below:

Step 1:  Design your Google form, let’s say it looks like this:

Step 2:  Click on the Responses tab of the created form.

Step 3:  Click on the Google Sheets  icon or the ellipsis next to it (followed by Select response destination ).

Step 4:  You will be asked if you want to create a new worksheet or choose an existing one to connect to your form. If creating a new spreadsheet, type a name for the sheet in the input field next to ‘ Create a new spreadsheet ’.

Step 5:  If using an existing spreadsheet, check the radio button next to ‘ Select existing spreadsheet ’. Then click Select and choose the spreadsheet you want to connect to the form.

Please note  that even if you choose an existing spreadsheet, Google Forms is going to create a new tab in the worksheet with fields corresponding to those in your form.

To look at the newly created sheet at any point, simply click on the Google Sheets icon (under the Responses tab of your form).

Test out the Google Forms-Sheets integration by clicking on Preview , filling out the form, and submitting it. Your form should instantly send all your responses to the connected worksheet.

How to Create a Google Form from a Spreadsheet

You can also go the other way round. You can create a Google form from columns in a Google Sheets worksheet.

To connect a form to a worksheet, follow the steps shown below:

  • Open a new or existing worksheet in Google Sheets.
  • Navigate to Tools > Create a new form  from the main menu.

This will create a Form Responses  sheet in your workbook and open the blank connected Google form in a new browser tab.

You can now start adding questions to the form. You will notice that as you add new questions to the form, the connected worksheet will get automatically updated with a corresponding column header in real-time.

Once you have your responses, you can create a dashboard  with them on Google sheets to tell a story.

Note: Even if you are using an existing worksheet to create a form, Google Sheets will automatically create a new tab called Form Responses 1  when you connect it to a Google Form.

If you create multiple forms connected to the same Google Sheets workbook, there will be separate form to spreadsheet responses created for each form response.

How to Unlink a Google Form from Google Sheets

If you want to unlink a form in Google Spreadsheets:

  • Open a form in Google Forms .
  • In the top left under “Responses,” click Summary.

How to Save or Delete a Google Form

You can delete individual responses or all the responses on a google form. Simply go to your google forms in summary and click the 3 dots. Select delete all responses if you want to delete all responses.

How to Remove Google Form Responses

If you want to delete individual responses:

  • Go to summary under Responses
  • Select Individual.
  • Choose Previous Previous or Next Next to find the response you want to delete.
  • Click Delete Delete and then OK.

How to Filter Data Before Sending to Google Sheets

You might want to filter your form responses so that only specific data go into your worksheet depending on a given input. For example, say you have a signup form and you have a multiple-choice question asking if the user wants to sign up to your mailing system.

Based on the user’s answer to this question, you might want to filter the form’s responses to be sent to the Form Response sheet only if the user chooses a ‘Yes’ .

You can use either the QUERY or FILTER function to accomplish this. Let us look at each of the two methods.

Using the QUERY Function to Filter Form Responses

The QUERY function in Google Sheets  lets you use SQL language commands on your Google Sheets data. The syntax for this function is as follows:

QUERY( data , query , [ headers ])

  • data is the range of cells that you want to run the query on
  • query is the query that you want to run on your data. It is usually specified as an SQL query within double-quotes.
  • headers is an optional parameter. It specifies the number of header rows  at the top of the data (not relevant in this case).

So, if you want to filter data in columns (say) A:E of a sheet, such that it displays only those rows where column E has the value “ Yes ”, your QUERY formula will be as follows:

=QUERY(A:E, “SELECT * WHERE E=’Yes’”)

So let’s assume your form response that corresponds to whether the user wants to sign up or not is stored in column E of the ‘ Form Responses 1 ’ sheet, as shown below:

To filter the sheet and display only those rows where Column E has a “ Yes ” value, follow the steps shown below:

Step 1:  Open the sheet connected to your form.

Step 2:  Press the ‘+’ sign next to the Form Responses   1  tab to create a new sheet in the same workbook.

Step 3:  In cell A1 of this sheet, enter the following formula: =QUERY(‘Form Responses 1’!A:E, “SELECT * WHERE E=’Yes'”,1).

Step 4:  Press the Return Key.

Once you’ve entered this formula into your response sheet, your form data should automatically get filtered in this new sheet to display only those entries where the user has opted to sign up (where column E has the value “ Yes ”).

Using the FILTER Function to Filter Form Responses

Alternatively, you can use the FILTER  function to filter your response data. The syntax for this function is as follows:

FILTER( data , condition )

  • data is the range of cells that you want to filter
  • condition is the condition you want satisfied for a row to be included in the result

So, if you want to filter data in columns (say) A:E of a sheet ‘Form Responses 1’, such that it displays only those rows where column E has the value “ Yes ”, your FILTER formula will be as follows:

=FILTER(‘Form Responses 1′!A1:E4,’Form Responses 1’!E1:E4=”Yes”)

Once you’ve entered this formula into cell A1 of your response sheet, your form data should automatically get filtered to display only those entries where the user has opted to sign up (where column E has the value “ Yes ”).

Google is shaking up Search. On Tuesday, the company announced big new AI-powered changes to the world’s dominant search engine at I/O, Google’s annual conference for developers. With the new features, Google is positioning Search as more than a way to simply find websites. Instead, the company wants people to use its search engine to directly get answers and help them with planning events and brainstorming ideas.

“[With] generative AI, Search can do more than you ever imagined,” wrote Liz Reid, vice president and head of Google Search, in a blog post . “So you can ask whatever’s on your mind or whatever you need to get done — from researching to planning to brainstorming — and Google will take care of the legwork.”

Google’s changes to Search, the primary way that the company makes money, are a response to the explosion of generative AI ever since OpenAI’s ChatGPT released at the end of 2022. Since then, a handful of AI-powered apps and services including ChatGPT, Anthropic, Perplexity, and Microsoft’s Bing, which is powered by OpenAI’s GPT-4, have challenged Google’s flagship service by directly providing answers to questions instead of simply presenting people a list of links. This is the gap that Google is racing to bridge with its new features in Search.

Starting today, Google will show complete AI-generated answers in response to most search queries at the top of the results page in the US. Google first unveiled the feature a year ago at Google I/O in 2023, but so far, anyone who wanted to use the feature had to sign up for it as part of the company’s Search Labs platform that lets people try out upcoming features ahead of their general release. Google is now making AI Overviews available to hundreds of millions of Americans, and says that it expects it to be available in more countries to over a billion people by the end of the year. Reid wrote that people who opted to try the feature through Search Labs have used it “billions of times” so far, and said that any links included as part of the AI-generated answers get more clicks than if the page had appeared as a traditional web listing, something that publishers have been concerned about. “As we expand this experience, we’ll continue to focus on sending valuable traffic to publishers and creators,” Reid wrote.

In addition to AI Overviews, searching for certain queries around dining and recipes, and later with movies, music, books, hotels, shopping and more in English in the US will show a new search page where results are organized using AI. “[When] you’re looking for ideas, Search will use generate AI to brainstorm with you and create an AI-organized results page that makes it easy to explore,” Reid said in the blog post.

If you opt in to Search Labs, you’ll be able to access even more features powered by generative AI in Google Search. You’ll be able to get AI Overview to simplify the language or break down a complex topic in more detail. Here’s an example of a query asking Google to explain, for instance, the connection between lightning and thunder.

Search Labs testers will also be able to ask Google really complex questions in a single query to get answers on a single page instead of having to do multiple searches. The example that Google’s blog post gives: “Find the best yoga or pilates studios in Boston and show details on their intro offers and walking time from Beacon Hill.” In response, Google shows the highest-rated yoga and pilates studios near Boston’s Beacon Hill neighborhood and even puts them on a map for easy navigation.

Google also wants to become a meal and vacation planner by letting people who sign up for Search Labs ask queries like “create a 3 day meal plan for a group that’s easy to prepare” and letting you swap out individual results in its AI-generated plan with something else (swapping a meat-based dish in a meal plan for a vegetarian one, for instance).

Finally, Google will eventually let anyone who signs up for Search Labs use a video as a search query instead of text or images. “Maybe you bought a record player at a thriftshop, but it’s not working when you turn it on and the metal piece with the needle is drifting unexpectedly,” wrote Reid in Google’s blog post. “Searching with video saves you the time and trouble of finding the right words to describe this issue, and you’ll get an AI Overview with steps and resources to troubleshoot.”

Google said that all these new capabilities are powered by a brand new Gemini model customized for Search that combines Gemini’s advanced multi-step reasoning and multimodal abilities with Google’s traditional search systems.

For the past year and a half since ChatGPT was released, a scary question has hovered over the heads of major online publishers: What if Google decides to overhaul its core search engine to feature generative artificial intelligence more prominently — and breaks our business in the process?

The question speaks to one of the most fragile dependencies in today’s online media ecosystem.

Most big publishers, including The New York Times, receive a significant chunk of traffic from people going to Google, searching for something and clicking on articles about it. That traffic, in turn, allows publishers to sell ads and subscriptions, which pay for the next wave of articles, which Google can then show to people who go searching for the next thing.

The whole symbiotic cycle has worked out fine, more or less, for a decade or two. And even when Google announced its first generative A.I. chatbot, Bard , last year, some online media executives consoled themselves with the thought that Google wouldn’t possibly put such an erratic and unproven technology into its search engine, or risk mucking up its lucrative search ads business, which generated $175 billion in revenue last year.

But change is coming.

At its annual developer conference on Tuesday, Google announced that it would start showing A.I.-generated answers — which it calls “A.I. overviews” — to hundreds of millions of users in the United States this week. More than a billion users will get them by the end of the year, the company said.

The answers, which are powered by Google’s Gemini A.I. technology , will appear at the top of the search results page when users search for things like “vegetarian meal prep options” or “day trips in Miami.” They’ll give users concise summaries of whatever they’re looking for, along with suggested follow-up questions and a list of links they can click on to learn more. (Users will still get traditional search results, too, but they’ll have to scroll farther down the page to see them.)

The addition of these answers is the biggest change that Google has made to its core search results page in years, and one that stems from the company’s fixation on shoving generative A.I. into as many of its products as possible. It may also be a popular feature with users — I’ve been testing A.I. overviews for months through Google’s Search Labs program, and have generally found them to be useful and accurate.

But publishers are right to be spooked. If the A.I. answer engine does its job well enough, users won’t need to click on any links at all. Whatever they’re looking for will be sitting right there, on top of their search results. And the grand bargain on which Google’s relationship with the open web rests — you give us articles, we give you traffic — could fall apart.

Google executives put a positive spin on the announcement on Tuesday, saying that the new A.I. overviews would improve the user experience by “taking the legwork out of searching.”

But that legwork pays for a lot of journalism, and a lot of other types of online media (fashion blogs, laptop reviews, restaurant listings) without which the internet would be far less useful. If Google’s A.I. overviews starve these websites of traffic, what will happen to them? And if big chunks of the web were to vanish altogether, what would be left for the A.I. to summarize?

Google clearly anticipated these fears, and its executives had responses prepared.

In a briefing this week ahead of Google’s developer conference, they said that the company’s tests had found that users who were shown A.I. overviews tended to conduct more searches, and visited a more diverse set of websites. They also said that the links that appeared in A.I. overviews got more clicks than the links that were displayed on traditional search results pages.

Liz Reid, the vice president of search at Google, said in a blog post on Tuesday that the company would “continue to focus on sending valuable traffic to publishers and creators.”

But parse these responses carefully and you’ll see that Google is not saying that publishers’ overall search traffic won’t decline. That’s because Google can’t really predict what will happen once it starts showing A.I.-generated overviews in billions of search results a day, and how users’ behavior may change as a result.

Earlier this year, I wrote about Perplexity , an A.I.-powered “answer engine” that shows users a concise summary of a topic they’re researching rather than handing them a list of websites to visit. The experience, I believed, was clearly better than a traditional search engine for some types of searches, and usually gave me more useful information faster.

But I was also nervous, because during my own testing of Perplexity, I basically stopped clicking any links at all. In a world where A.I. can browse the internet for me and paraphrase what it sees, I found that I just didn’t need them. And I worried about what would happen if Perplexity users were all like me and got in the habit of relying on A.I.-generated summaries rather than on original sources.

I have the same concerns about Google’s new A.I. overviews, but on a vastly different scale.

Perplexity is tiny — just 10 million monthly users, as of February. Google, by contrast, has billions of users and represents more than 90 percent of the global search market. If it makes a change to its search engine that reduces outgoing traffic by just a few percentage points, every publisher will feel it.

It’s unclear how big the effects of Google’s A.I. overviews will ultimately be. One analyst firm, Gartner, has predicted that traffic to the web from search engines could fall by 25 percent by 2026. And many publishers are bracing for double-digit declines in traffic this year.

Maybe these fears are overblown, and publishers have been worrying over nothing. But after Tuesday’s announcement, Google has made it clear that they’re about to find out either way.

How To Play Strands

The New York Times’ Strands puzzle is a play on the classic word search. It’s in beta for now, which means it’ll only stick around if enough people play it every day.

There’s a new game of Strands to play every day. The game will present you with a six by eight grid of letters. The aim is to find a group of words that have something in common, and you’ll get a clue as to what that theme is. When you find a theme word, it will remain highlighted in blue.

You’ll also need to find a special word called a spangram. This tells you what the words have in common. The spangram links at least two sides of the board, but it may not start or end there. While the theme words will not be a proper name, the spangram can be a proper name. When you find the spangram, it will remain highlighted in yellow.

Every letter is used once in one of the theme words and spangram. You can connect letters vertically, horizontally and diagonally, and it’s possible to switch directions in the middle of a word. If you’re playing on a touchscreen, double tap the last letter to submit your guess.

I needed a little help at the outset, so I found FARCE, FACE and RACE in the bottom right to unlock a hint. That gave me the letters for BRIE in the top right. That's when I spotted OLIVE in the top left, which made the spangram pretty obvious.

The spangram blocked off the letters for SALAMI on the right rail. From there, I found SPREAD on the left, FRUIT at the bottom and NUTS in between those. That left CRACKER for the win.

I used one hint and the spangram was the third theme word I found.

Web publishers brace for carnage as Google adds AI answers

About 40 percent of visits to her blog, Easy Family Recipes , come through the search engine, which has for more than two decades served as the clearinghouse of the internet, sending users to hundreds of millions of websites each day.

As the tech giant gears up for Google I/O, its annual developer conference, this week, creators like Matherne are worried about the expanding reach of its new search tool that incorporates artificial intelligence. The product, dubbed “Search Generative Experience,” or SGE, directly answers queries with complex, multi-paragraph replies that push links to other websites further down the page, where they’re less likely to be seen.

The shift stands to shake the very foundations of the web.

The rollout threatens the survival of the millions of creators and publishers who rely on the service for traffic. Google calls its AI answers “overviews” but they often just paraphrase directly from websites. One search for how to fix a leaky toilet provided an AI answer with several tips, including tightening tank bolts. At the bottom of the answer, Google linked to The Spruce, a home improvement and gardening website owned by web publisher Dotdash Meredith, which also owns Investopedia and Travel + Leisure. Google’s AI tips lifted a phrase from The Spruce’s article word-for-word.

A spokesperson for Dotdash Meredith declined to comment.

The links Google provides are often half-covered, requiring a user to click to expand the box to see them all. It’s unclear which of the claims made by the AI come from which link.

Tech research firm Gartner predicts traffic to the web from search engines will fall 25 percent by 2026. Ross Hudgens, CEO of search engine optimization consultancy Siege Media, said he estimates at least a 10 to 20 percent hit, and more for some publishers. “Some people are going to just get bludgeoned,” he said.

Raptive, which provides digital media, audience and advertising services to about 5,000 websites, including Easy Family Recipes, estimates changes to search could result in about $2 billion in losses to creators — with some websites losing up to two-thirds of their traffic. Raptive arrived at these figures by analyzing thousands of keywords that feed into its network, and conducting a side-by-side comparison of traditional Google search and the pilot version of Google SGE.

Michael Sanchez, the co-founder and CEO of Raptive, says that the changes coming to Google could “deliver tremendous damage” to the internet as we know it. “What was already not a level playing field … could tip its way to where the open internet starts to become in danger of surviving for the long term,” he said.

When Google’s chief executive Sundar Pichai announced the broader rollout during an earnings call last month, he said the company is making the change in a “measured” way, while “also prioritizing traffic to websites and merchants.” Company executives have long argued that Google needs a healthy web to give people a reason to use its service, and doesn’t want to hurt publishers. A Google spokesperson declined to comment further.

“I think we got to see an incredible blossoming of the internet, we got to see something that was really open and freewheeling and wild and very exciting for the whole world,” said Selena Deckelmann, the chief product and technology officer for Wikimedia, the foundation that oversees Wikipedia.

“Now, we’re just in this moment where I think that the profits are driving people in a direction that I’m not sure makes a ton of sense,” Deckelmann said. “This is a moment to take stock of that and say, ‘What is the internet we actually want?’”

People who rely on the web to make a living are worried.

Jake Boly, a strength coach based in Austin, has spent three years building up his website of workout shoe reviews. But last year, his traffic from Google dropped 96 percent. Google still seems to find value in his work, citing his page on AI-generated answers about shoes. The problem is, people read Google’s summary and don’t visit his site anymore, Boly said.

“My content is good enough to scrape and summarize,” he said. “But it’s not good enough to show in your normal search results, which is how I make money and stay afloat.”

Google first said it would begin experimenting with generative AI in search last year, several months after OpenAI released ChatGPT. At the time, tech pundits speculated that AI chatbots could replace Google search as the place to find information. Satya Nadella, the CEO of Google’s biggest competitor, Microsoft, added an AI chatbot to his company’s search engine and in February 2023 goaded Google to “ come out and show that they can dance .”

The search giant started dancing. Though it had invented much of the AI technology enabling chatbots and had used it to power tools like Google Translate, it started putting generative AI tech into its other products. Google Docs, YouTube’s video-editing tools and the company’s voice assistant all got AI upgrades.

But search is Google’s most important product, accounting for about 57 percent of its $80 billion in revenue in the first quarter of this year. Over the years, search ads have been the cash cow Google needed to build its other businesses, like YouTube and cloud storage, and to stay competitive by buying up other companies .

Google has largely avoided AI answers for the moneymaking searches that host ads, said Andy Taylor, vice president of research at internet marketing firm Tinuiti.

When it does show an AI answer on “commercial” searches, it shows up below the row of advertisements. That could force websites to buy ads just to maintain their position at the top of search results.

Google has been testing the AI answers publicly for the past year, showing them to a small percentage of its billions of users as it tries to improve the technology.

Still, it routinely makes mistakes. A review by The Washington Post published in April found that Google’s AI answers were long-winded, sometimes misunderstood the question and made up fake answers.

The bar for success is high. While OpenAI’s ChatGPT is a novel product, consumers have spent years with Google and expect search results to be fast and accurate. The rush into generative AI might also run up against legal problems. The underlying tech behind OpenAI, Google, Meta and Microsoft’s AI was trained on millions of news articles, blog posts, e-books, recipes, social media comments and Wikipedia pages that were scraped from the internet without paying or asking permission of their original authors.

OpenAI and Microsoft have faced a string of lawsuits over alleged theft of copyrighted works .

“If journalists did that to each other, we’d call that plagiarism,” said Frank Pine, the executive editor of MediaNews Group, which publishes dozens of newspapers around the United States, including the Denver Post, San Jose Mercury News and the Boston Herald. Several of the company’s papers sued OpenAI and Microsoft in April, alleging the companies used its news articles to train their AI.

If news organizations let tech companies, including Google, use their content to make AI summaries without payment or permission, it would be “calamitous” for the journalism industry, Pine said. The change could have an even bigger effect on newspapers than the loss of their classifieds businesses in the mid-2000s or Meta’s more recent pivot away from promoting news to its users, he said.

The move to AI answers, and the centralization of the web into a few portals isn’t slowing down. OpenAI has signed deals with web publishers — including Dotdash Meredith — to show their content prominently in its chatbot.

Matherne, of Easy Family Recipes, says she’s bracing for the changes by investing in social media channels and email newsletters.

“The internet’s kind of a scary place right now,” Matherne said. “You don’t know what to expect.”
