Solar System Worksheets: Free printables for preschoolers and older kids too!
10 + solar system worksheets to promote play-based learning ! These printables are free, fun and focus on numeracy, literacy, STEM, and sensory learning. Great for astronomy teaching units for preschoolers, kindergarteners, and older kids too!
After hours of playing outside, colouring cardboard boxes, painting with chalk paint, playing t-ball, and riding their bikes, my kids need some down time. One of their favourite things to do right now is print off printables and colour and craft their ways through them. They have a particular affinity for solar system worksheets right now. I’m pretty sure that’s thank to Miles from Tomorrowland.
Recently, I created my own solar system themed printable packet (click the image below to check it out). From it, we’ve made the planets out of rocks, a sensory bin, cut out planets, and arranged them by size. It’s been fun seeing how this one activity has prompted more questions and interest in the solar system. Not only that, but my kids now recognize some of the more obvious planets on their own. They’re four and five-years-old.
Because of this new found interest, I wanted to assemble a number of solar system worksheets that promote play-based learning. All of these solar system printables are free to download. And, they are perfect for preschoolers and kindergarteners. Some are great for older kids too!

Did you know that March is Global Astronomy Month? That means, it’s the perfect time to teach your kiddos all about outer space. These solar system worksheets will get you started!
These free printables can be added to your space-themed lesson plans. The activities included in this printable work best with kids in preschool, kindergarten, and early elementary.
Because all of the printables are print-and-go, they’re great for busy homeschool moms and teachers like you! Use them at home, in the classroom, and even in your library circle time sessions.
As the weather warms up, it’s the perfect time to head outdoors and study the sky. Start by teaching your kids about the planets.
Teach them a mnemonic device – MVEMJSUN (My Very Educated Mother Just Served Us Nachos) to remember the proper order of the plants.
This worksheet pack is a simple and easy way to help children learn about the planets, the order of the planets, and some simple facts about the planets.
What’s included in these printable science worksheets?
These elementary science worksheets are a fun way to teach or practice the names of the planets in our solar system.
What’s in it?
This worksheet pack includes a gorgeous solar system poster featuring brightly colored planets and their names.
The black and white planet worksheet can be colored before labeling the planets from memory.
There is a matching page on which children will read a statement and match it to the correct planet. These facts should be easy to find in any nonfiction book about planets. If not, a quick (and safe) google search should reveal the answer.
The solar system maze and the rocket color by number worksheets are great for preschoolers who are tagging along with older siblings.
Older children can practice spelling the names of the planets with the word scramble.
Finally, there is a fun writing prompt. Kids of all ages can complete this activity. Younger children can dictate their story and have someone write it for them. Older kids can write it on their own.
Fun Ways to Use These Printables
This solar system printable is great just like it is, but there are so many ways you can work on additional skills with them!
MNEMONIC DEVICES
Mnemonic devices can be used to memorize a series of words or names in a specific order. Learning the names of the planets in order from the sun out is easy when you teach your kids “My Very Educated Mother Just Served Us Nachos”.
Kids can practice ABC order by putting the names of the planets in alphabetical order on the back of one page.

Outer space learning binder for preschool
In this article, you’ll find a totally free preschool space activities learning binder!
It is finally here! My preschool space activities binder I’ve been working on for the past few weeks.
If you’ve been looking for high-quality preschool space theme printables then this learning binder won’t disappoint you.
Children will learn their first facts about outer space and our solar system. And additionally, they’ll work on the typical preschool skills – counting, comparing, tracing, matching, sorting, and more.
Preschool space activities binder
If you have never heard of Here we are: Notes for living on planet Earth , I highly recommend you get this book for your children.
My kids and I were totally blown away by this book. And so is everybody else who gets to read it with us.
Thanks to this book one of my boys fell in love with space. And that’s the reason I decided to create this outer space activity binder. To further his interest.
So whether you’re trying to teach the solar system to your preschoolers or simply want to add some space-themed printables to your lesson plan, this binder will serve you well.
Preschoolers will work on these skills:
- matching and comparing
- tracing numbers, lines, and circles
- sorting by day and night
- counting up to 12
- ordering by size
Each activity is based on a simple space fact easy enough to understand by preschoolers.
That’s why it’s important you go through these preschool activities with them first. Depending on your child’s interest, you can always talk more about each page.
And don’t worry if you don’t have all the space facts in place. There are many great websites about space for kids I will briefly mention at the end of this post.
Make the outer space learning binder for preschoolers
What you’ll need:
- paper and printer
- laminator (optional)
- hook and loop fasteners/tape
- binder or folder
The activities are most suitable for children between 3 to 5 years old.
You can choose to make a learning binder with laminated pages or simply print out the pages and use them as worksheets.
But I think it’s definitely worth it to make the binder even though it requires some prep time.
That way your children can play and learn over and over again!
Feel free to use it in your preschool class or at home.
To download, go to the bottom of this page and click the download button.
Outer space activities for preschoolers
Here, you can have a peek at all the activities included in this printable bundle.
Planets shadow matching
Shadow matching is a great activity for visual discrimination. It is often used in occupational therapy too.
Tracing the orbits
Tracing circles is a good pre-writing activity for preschoolers. Simply attach a dry-erase marker to the binder or let your child use washable markers (that’s what I prefer).
Day and night sorting
You can build on this activity and talk more about the daily rhythm and routines. Have your child come up with other day/night activities.
The Moon puzzle
There is a grid attached to help with the puzzle. Feel free to skip it if you think your child can build it without help.
Rocket launch countdown
Build a rocket puzzle
Ordering planets by size
You might also like my Big and small worksheets for preschoolers .
Counting stars 1 to 12
Use this activity for learning numbers 1 to 12. But you can always make it into a skip counting game or missing numbers game.
Just add some numbers and skip others and let your child place the rest incorrectly.
Outer space patterns
Tracing lines
And as I mentioned earlier, you might like these websites for kids dedicated to space and to learn about the solar system:
- Our universe for kids
- NASA Kids’ club
- Astronomy for Kids: Teaching Space Science to Young Stargazers (Free Booklet) by Telescope Guide
- The Planets

Solar System Facts for Kids
Here are some good talking points to mention that will help them remember facts about each planet, these points were paraphrased from getlitt.co .
- The Sun is a star – it gives off light and heat and is made up of hot gas.
- Not everything in the Solar System orbits the Sun. The Moon, for example, revolves around the Earth.
- There are 8 planets that orbit the Sun.
- The order of the planets in the Solar System are – Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune.
- The biggest planet is Jupiter and the smallest is Mercury
- The Earth rotates as it orbits the Sun. One day = One complete rotation. It takes 365 rotations or days to complete a whole year.
- Our Galaxy is called the Milky Way and the Sun is one of the hundreds of billions of stars in the galaxy.
- Saturn’s ring particles are made almost entirely of water ice particles.
- The Solar System formed around 4.6 billion years ago.
- As of 2008, Pluto, Ceres, Eris, Makemake and Haumea are known as dwarf planets
How to use the solar system worksheets PDF / craft for preschool
Grab a paper plate, then discuss the points above with your students / kids.
Have them cut and glue their planets onto the paper plate. You could also use the black and white page to have the kids coloring and decorating their own planets and paper plate / solar system.
I absolutely LOVE how @hooray_english_at_home (on Instagram) used this craft. They basically created a universe craft with the printable template:

Space Theme Art
Painted Planets
Materials Needed: newspaper, masking tape, paint
The children can create their own planets by crumpling a piece of newspaper into a ball and then taping it. If you have a model of the planets hanging nearby, they can try to create a planet similar to Earth, Mars, etc., but why not create their own and then name it!
When dry, hang from the ceiling!
Space Rockets
Materials Needed: Paper towel tubes (1 for each child plus a couple of extra); card stock or other sturdy paper; hot glue gun; paint
In advance, shape the card stock or sturdy paper into triangular tops to fit on top of the paper towel tube as the rocket top. Hot glue them onto each paper towel tube.
In advance, cut 2 slits on the bottom of the paper towel tubes.
In advance, using the extra paper towel tubes (or you can use stock paper), cut a "stand" and place it into the slits. This will make the bottom look like a rocket with a stand and will help the rocket ships to stand up while painting!
Provide each child with a rocket ship and paint and let them decorate away! When complete, hang from your ceiling!
EXTENSION: When dry, the children could paint over them with some watered down glitter glue for pizzazz!
Night Sky Mural
Materials Needed:
DAY 1: Large mural paper; paint in blue, black, gray
DAY 2: Star stickers, bath scrunchies or round sponges; variety of paint
Directions:
DAY 1: Have the children paint the sky with blue, black and gray! Let it dry.
DAY 2: Decorate the universe! Use Star stickers. Use sponges to sponge paint planets, moons, stars, the sun!
Display on a wall or use as your bulletin board!

Space Theme Block Center Ideas
Astronaut Life
Add dollhouse people and furniture to the block area to recreate life in a rocket ship or at Mission Control!
Space Theme Circle Time Ideas
Circle Time is such a great time for children to learn the social skills of being together as a large group AND to learn more about your Space Theme!
Tell a Cooperative Story
Materials Needed: Paper, pen!
I LOVE cooperative stories! They are great, and silly and fun! Tell the children that they are going to make up a story about taking a trip to a planet! You will need to prompt a lot of it, but write down everything they say and WHO says it!
I usually start with: Once upon a time....... then add a prompt......Once upon a time, some preschool children took a trip in a rocket ship to another planet. When the rocket ship was in the air.......
You then ask the children "What happened when the rocket ship was in the air?" Ask only one child who has an answer to answer that question. Then prompt the next question.
"When the rocket ship was in the air, a bird flew by..."
Say, "what happened next?" Call on another child.
Continue until all of the children have had a turn.
Write down each answer with the child's name next to it.
Retype the story, putting each child's name in parenthesis after their statement. Print enough copies for each child and one extra for your library!
The next day, read the class copy of the story to the children. You won't have to say each child's name while reading it...trust me...they'll remember!
After the story, have the children decorate a black or dark blue piece of paper with stickers for their individual book covers. You should make one, also! Yours will be for the class copy.
Attach the book covers and send one book home with each student. Place the class copy in your classroom library! They will LOVE seeing their name in print!
Stars in the Sky
Materials Needed: A star cut out that has lots of glitter on one side and is plain on the other side.
Talk to the children about when they see stars...night time, day? Explain that the stars are still there, we just can't see them with all the light from the sun shining during the day.
Follow up with this song!
Sung to the tune of Itsy, Bitsy, Spider
See the shining stars(Hold up shiny side of star facing out)
Up in the big, night sky.
Look at them all twinkling
and blinking way up high!
When the morning comes, (Slowly start turning the star around)
the night turns into day
And the little twinkling stars. (Show plain side of star only.)
All seem to go away!
Outer Space
I look up from Earth and try to see.
The planets looking back at me.
I gaze at bright and distant stars.
And search for Mercury, Venus and Mars.
I squint at the Milky Way, way up high.
And look for Jupiter in the sky.
Where are Saturn, Uranus, Neptune?
They're far away, high like the moon.
A telescope would be the best.
for spotting Pluto and the rest.
But even with my two eyes.
I look for planets in the sky.
EXTENSION: Provide paper towel tubes for the children to use while you recite the poem to them.
Snack Recipe Ideas to Cook Up for Your Space Theme!
Cooking with children helps develop their math skills and helps them to learn how to follow directions. It also allows for some great conversation! Ask many questions while cooking with your children to encourage conversation! Be sure to ask specific Space theme questions while making these fun snacks!
Milky Way...sort of!

Space Theme Ideas to Transform Your Dramatic Play Area
Our Own Spaceship!
Materials Needed: Decorated space ship made from a box flashlights; backpacks with water bottles; pretend food; binoculars; blankets; large boots covered in aluminum foil!
You may also want to provide clip boards and markers for the children to take notes while "measuring" how much fuel they have, how far they've gone, etc.!
Space Theme Ideas for your Easel--More Than Just Painting (Although that is always THE favorite in our classroom!)
Star Stencils
Materials Needed: Cut stars out of stock paper. Tape them onto the easel paper. When children are done painting, help them remove the stars to see the silhouette results!
VARIATION: Tape the star cut outs UNDER the paper and have the children either color over them with large markers or using the sides of crayons!
Space Theme Large Group Games that help build their muscles while they have fun together
Planet Bean Bag Toss
Materials Needed: Large piece of cardboard; bean bags
In advance, cut holes larger than the bean bags. Paint Blue or black. Paint or attach paper stars around the holes. Let your little ones practice using their tossing and eye-hand coordination skills with this!
Getting Fit Obstacle Course
Astronauts need to be in very good physical health! Help your preschoolers train for NASA by setting up an obstacle course!
Use whatever you have available: Circle mats to hop from one to the other (or precut paper circles taped to the floor), a tunnel to crawl through (chairs with a blanket over them work well!); a balance beam to walk on or hop over!
Space Theme Ideas for Your Library
Book Suggestions for the Library
(I LOVE Amazon, and some of the links below will take you to the Amazon website. If you do choose to purchase yours through Amazon, they do send me a few cents--which supports my coffee habit! )
Decor for the Library Area
Hang pictures of anything space related......Magazine pictures, posters, the children's artwork!
Space Theme activities to help your Preschoolers develop those small muscles in their hands!
Moon Rock Sorting
Materials Needed: Bin of rocks of different colors, shapes and sizes; aluminum foil bowls
Children sort the rocks by different attributes.
Moon Rock Counting
Materials needed: small rocks and pebbles; aluminum muffin tins
Program the individual muffin tin sections with a number. The children place the corresponding number of rocks or pebbles in each one.
EXTENSION: To further develop small muscle development, provide plastic or metal tongs for the children to pick the rocks up with.
Smallest to Largest
Pre-cut different sizes of stars or planets.
Children put them in order of largest to smallest, smallest to largest.
Space Theme Music and Movement Activities and Ideas to get your Preschoolers Movin' and Groovin'!
Bring Back Our Teacher!
Sung to "My Bonnie Lies Over The Ocean"
We've been singing this one for years. We have changed the words to go along with so many themes! I must warn you: This song will most likely get stuck in your head for days, so proceed at your own risk! ;)
Miss Cheryl is up in a space ship. Miss Cheryl is far away as can be. Miss Cheryl is in outer space. Oh bring back Miss Cheryl to me!
Bring back, bring back, oh bring back Miss Cheryl to me, to me.
Bring back, bring back, oh bring back Miss Cheryl to me!
Fill in the underlined part with the children's names, with "Mommy", etc. Our children have filled it in with the names of their pets. They've even sung about their snack going to outer space! As always with preschoolers, the possibilities are endless!
Space Activities for the Senses!
The Moon's Surface
Materials Needed: Large tarp (or shower curtain) to place under your sand and water table; lots of flour (several bags); rocks of different sizes
Pour the flour into the table.
Tell the children that it is the moon's surface (moon dust!).
Drop or toss a rock into the table. That is a crater.
Compare to pictures of the moon's surface.
Then just let them play with the flour with sand toys.
EXTENSION: Add water to the sand to let them make moon goop to play with! Messy but fun!
Although you can purchase moon sand at Amazon or at teacher stores, why not make your own with the children.
Materials Needed: 6 cups play sand (you can purchased colored play sand as well!); 3 cups cornstarch; 1 1/2 cups of cold water.
Have the children help scoop the corn starch and water into the table and mix until smooth.
Add sand gradually. This is very pliable sand and fun!
Be sure to store in an airtight container when not in use. If it dries, ad a few tablespoons of water and mix it in.
Space Theme Science Activities--for your Preschool Scientists in Training!
Bathing in Space
Materials Needed: Washcloths, smocks, water
Explain to the children that everything floats when there is no gravity! Astronauts, therefore, cannot take baths. They take "sponge-baths", they wash up with damp washcloths.
Over a table, have the children use a washcloth to wash their face. What happens to the water that drips out? (It falls to the table because of gravity).
Have the children lay on the floor and wash their faces with a wet washcloth...what happens to the water that drips out? (It drips on their faces!...because of gravity).
In space, those drops would float around the room like bubbles! There's no gravity!
Rockets that Work!
Materials Needed: Plastic film canisters; Alka-Seltzer tablets (broken into 3-4 pieces); water.
Place 1 of the broken pieces of tablets into the canister. QUICKLY--add water to about half full and put the lid on.
Set it (lid on the ground) on the ground.
STAND BACK!
I'd recommend taping a line of where the children should stay behind! Only adults should do this!
One year, after a few blast-offs, the children started guessing where the rocket would land!
They each placed a rock (or you can use paper) where they thought it might land. They then went behind the safety line and the teacher blasted the rockets! Great fun!
Writing Activity Ideas for Your Preschool Classroom's Space Theme!
Letter Matching
In advance, cut out and cover many stars with aluminum foil.
In the center of a star, tape an upper case letter A. Tape a lower case letter 'a' on another star. The children should match the letters.
VARIATION: If you are working with upper case only, then program 2 of each letter. You can have all the letters out for them to match or just choose the letters you have worked on with the class.
EXTENSION: The children use these letters to spell out their names or other words!
Miscellaneous Activities for Your Preschool Classroom's Space Theme!
Astronaut Training Day Thank you Kristi K. for this suggestion!!
End the unit with Astronaut Training Day! The children learn a little about what it is like to walk like an astronaut (on a giant air mattress), eat like an astronaut (food in baggies), sleep standing up in a sleeping bag attached to a wall, and guide their balloon space shuttles through an obstacle course. By the end of this unit, they all want to grow up to become astronauts and discover a new star or planet which they will get to name!!!
Our Classroom Star--a REAL one!
This idea came to me by reading Kristi's Astronaut Training Day activity above! There are many places where you can actually purchase a star and its coordinates! You can find information on the company we used by CLICKING the Cosmic Registry link HERE .
If you choose to do this, order your classroom star in advance so that you have the information and certification prior to the end of your theme!
Space Theme Field Trips
Local Science Museum
Take a trip to a local science or discovery museum.
Space Theme Classroom Visitors
There are many opportunities with a Space theme for visitors to your classroom! Survey parents for opportunities as well as your local community!
Also, invite a parent to visit who is a telescope hobbyist! Perhaps they can bring in their telescope and show the children how it works!

FAQ About Teaching a Space Preschool Theme
Outer space can be a pretty abstract topic for preschoolers. After all, they can’t really see space firsthand. But that doesn’t mean that the concept of space is too hard for them. Start by teaching your preschoolers about the sun, moon, and stars. Those are all things they can see in the sky. Then teach them about the planets and how humans might explore space.
The solar system consists of the sun and everything that orbits (or moves in a circular motion around) the sun. Eight planets and their moons orbit the sun, as well as dwarf planets, asteroids, comets, and small icy objects. These are all part of the solar system.
Astronauts have plenty of things to keep them busy in space. They conduct scientific experiments, collect data and samples, and do repairs on the spaceship. Astronauts have meetings via their computers with scientists on Earth, too. They also clean the ship and work out at least two hours a day to stay healthy and strong.

Let’s jump into our space shuttle and blast off into a space lesson! I’m filling this post with some great solar system activities for kids to help you with an out-of-this-world homeschool unit study.
Solar System Activities for Kids
I have created a Solar System unit study that is perfect for young students in upper elementary or middle school grades. To ensure they are remembering what they learn about space, I highly recommend getting them their own science notebook where they can capture their thoughts, track their science experiments, and make their notes on this space unit (and other future science units!).
Teaching About the Solar System
Outer space and the solar system are some of the most fascinating topics that kids learn about because it is a world of mystery up there in the dark blackness. The countless colorful heavenly bodies up there above us and knowing that our creative Creator God designed so much more outside of planet earth for us to learn about is exciting!
In the few decades since space exploration began, probes have reached the far regions of the solar system. The solar system is the group of celestial bodies, including Earth that orbits around the Milky Way galaxy. Some hundred billion stars can be found in the universe while more than 1,000 comets have been observed regularly through telescopes.
Introducing the Unit Study
As an introduction to the subject, take your children outside (both daytime and nighttime if possible) so they can see what makes up the sky. Never look directly into the sun because, even though it is so far away, the light will burn the tissue in your eyes which can lead to blindness.
If your kids are very interested in learning about space, get your family a telescope so you can look closely at the moon and all of its craters, see the stars, and even the satellites as they orbit the planet. This is such a fun way to learn about space!
Explain that our entire solar system is made up of our sun and all of the heavenly bodies that travel around it. Once they have familiarized themselves with the concept of space and the solar system, you can start moving on.
Parts of Our Solar System
Let’s begin with finding out exactly where we live in space.
We are living on a planet that is part of a solar system. Our solar system is made up of five components:
- The planets
- Dwarf planets
- Dozens of moons
- Millions of asteroids, comets, and meteoroids
These are all bound together by gravity.
Now, our solar system lies in the galaxy called The Milky Way. It does get quite technical, but all we need to know for now is that there are many galaxies in the universe, our galaxy is only one of them, and our solar system lies in that galaxy.
Learning the Different Planets of our Solar System
What is a planet .
Our solar system consists of eight planets in total. Each one is in its own orbit which means that it is on its path traveling around the Sun. To qualify as a planet, these massive round celestial bodies need to have their own gravity.
The Order of the Planets
The order of the planets, starting with the one nearest to the sun is:
Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune
Pluto used to be included in this list, after Neptune, but it was reclassified as a dwarf planet in 2006. A fun and easy way to remember the order of the planets is to learn the following pneumonic:
My Very Empty Mouth Just Slurped Up Nesquik
The first letter of each word is the same as the name of the planet and is in the correct order.
M = my = Mercury V = very = Venus E = empty – Earth M = mouth = Mars J = just = Jupiter S = slurped = Saturn U = up = Uranus N = Nesquik = Neptune
It is easier for younger children to learn a fun sentence like this and relate it to the planets, than just to learn the names of the planets. The best way to reinforce this is to build your own model of the solar system.
My Solar System Unit Study is a great way to learn about all sorts of aspects of the Solar System, and it includes your own planet project model, which you can use the printables to make your own model.
Another way to help your children learn about the planets is to create your own flash cards.
You can print cards with a picture on one side and a couple of facts on the back and your child needs to guess which planet this is. You could also use these planet fact cards to play Headbandz , where one person takes a card but doesn’t look at it. They show the picture to the other players who then give the cardholders facts about the planet, and the cardholder needs to guess which planet they’re describing.
This solar system cootie catcher activity is another great resource you can use with your kids when teaching basic facts about the planets.
Inner and Outer Planets: Inner planets
The inner four planets closest to the sun – Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars – are often called “terrestrial planets” because of their rocky surfaces. These four smaller planets are smaller than the four outer planets and are mostly made of rock and metal.
Mercury – this is the closest planet to the sun, has a rocky surface similar to earth, and doesn’t have much of an atmosphere. The surface temperature during the day can reach 840 degrees Fahrenheit and can drop right down to a freezing negative 275F. Because this planet spins so slowly, it takes 59 earth days to make a full rotation. That is slow!
Venus – even though Venus is not the closest planet to the sun, it is still the hottest. It has a thick layer of carbon dioxide and sulfuric acid clouds that trap the heat, making the temperatures hot enough to melt metals! Venus is another slow spinner but it rotates in the opposite direction to earth.
Earth – well, what can we say about Earth that you don’t already know? Well, there is quite a lot. Earth is on a tilted access and rotates once in 24 hours. It takes 365 1/4 days for the Earth to rotate around the Sun, and we have four seasons in a year. And don’t forget, we have our own moon – that is really far away! In fact, it is 30 Earth planets away, even though we can see it quite clearly with the naked eye.
Mars – seems to be the planet where everyone says the aliens come from, but in actual fact, there is no life on Mars. It is known as The Red Planet because of the iron that is in the ground. It’s a dry, desert-like planet and even though no humans have gone there yet, NASA has sent rovers there (little robot-controlled, all-terrain miniature vehicles). They drive around Mars, take pictures, collect samples, and take measurements as needed by the scientists.
Inner and Outer Planets: Outer planets
The outer planets in our solar system are Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune.
Jupiter – Jupiter was the first planet in our solar system to be discovered by Galileo, way back in 1610. It is the largest planet in our solar system and has a mass of 11 times that of Earth! Jupiter is a gas planet composed primarily of hydrogen and helium. It has a magnetic field that is 2.5 times as strong as Earth’s, which helps protect us from solar winds. At least 80 moons are orbiting Jupiter , and 23 of them are still waiting to be named!
It takes Jupiter 12 years to orbit the sun!
Saturn – Saturn is the sixth planet from the sun and this is the planet surrounded by amazing rings made from chunks of ice and rock. It is not the only planet with rings however Saturn’s rings are considered to be the most beautiful. In the 2nd century, when Saturn was discovered, the Romans named the day ‘Saturday’ after the planet Saturn. This planet is made up of gasses, mostly hydrogen and helium, similar to Jupiter.
Uranus – Uranus is another ice giant, and its atmosphere is made up mostly of hydrogen and helium. There is also methane in its atmosphere which gives it a blue color. Uranus has 13 rings around it but they are very faint and were only discovered in the 70s. It is a huge planet, about four times the size of Earth. If Earth were an apple, Uranus would be a basketball. That’s massive!
Did you know? Uranus is the only planet in our solar system that spins on its side!
Neptune – who else do we know is called Neptune? King Neptune, of course, the Roman God of the Sea! And that is precisely who this outer planet is named after. Lying eighth in line from the Sun is the fourth largest planet in our Solar System. It is a gas giant, it is cold and it’s dark. Even though it has a diameter approximately four times that of Earth, it is the only planet in our solar system that you cannot see with the naked eye because it is so far away!
It takes Neptune a whopping 165 years to orbit the sun! (and… it rains diamonds!)
Teaching About Our Moon
The reason I say ‘our’ moon is because there are so many different moons in space. Our moon, a celestial body, rotates around the Earth in its own orbit, completing a rotation in 24 hours.
The moon never changes size, as we know, but younger children don’t really understand that. Some nights they might look outside and there it is, big and bright and round like a saucer. Other nights they might take a look and there is only a sliver of the moon. This is due to where the sun, moon, and earth are all positioned, and how the sun’s light is shining on the moon.
All of these changes (or what we can see) are called the different phases of the moon.
You can also make a yummy edible ‘phases of the moon’ mini project, and enjoy other fun activities from my Solar System unit study which you can grab here . This phases of the moon wreath is also a really fun idea!
Fun Fact : Have you ever heard of a ploonet? Yes, it’s a real thing! A ploonet is actually an orphaned moon that has broken away from its parent planet.
Field Trips
Why not take your kids on a field trip to to find out more! There are some amazing places you can visit where they can learn all about the vastness of space.
Think of planetariums, and of course, observatories.
If you are in Houston, Texas, don’t miss out on NASA! They offer half-day or full-day tours around their facilities. NASA does have 20 centers across the USA, the head office is in Washington D.C, and the official launch site for rockets is in Florida.
Space Movies for Kids
There are many space movies available for all ages of people, it can be difficult to choose. And let’s not forget about the massive hits of Star Wars and Star Trek. Beam me up, Scotty!
Here is a brief list of the movies that we have enjoyed, and you might enjoy them too.
If your children do enjoy space, here are some movies that we watched and loved (all available on Prime video):
- Fly Me to the Moon
For middle to high school kids (as well as adults!), try:
- The Martian (a favorite of mine!)
- Interstellar

I’m sure you have seen or heard about the solar eclipse that will pass over the United States on April 8, 2024. I have received many requests for activities and ideas for this once-in-a-lifetime event. So, I have rounded up some of my favorite space ideas and activities. There is no need to reinvent the wheel; use all your space materials and add information about the North America eclipse.

Solar Eclipse Activities
Solar Eclipse Freebies! Grab these solar eclipse resources for 2 educational posters, a hat, I Can Build posters, and a coloring page all about the solar eclipse. These posters tell students simple information about the solar eclipse.
>>Get the FREEBIE by filling in the box at the bottom of the post, and it will be emailed to you!<<
Video List! These are a few of my favorite YouTube videos for the classroom about the solar eclipse. They are short, simple, and engaging, and they help younger students learn about the concept of a solar eclipse.

Eclipse Themed Snacks! Have your students make an eclipse snack and work on fine motor skills! Grab some plain sugar cookies, yellow frosting, and Oreos. I added in some extra yellow food coloring to make my frosting really yellow. Give each student a sugar cookie, some frosting, a knife or spoon, and an Oreo. They will frost their sugar cookie and then place their Oreo on top. The Oreo is the moon, and the sugar cookie is the sun. I added some sprinkles for the rays and corona of the sun that can be seen around the outside of the eclipse. If this is too much sugar, you can make a miniature version with vanilla wafers and mini Oreos. Another idea is to grab some moon pies for your eclipse snacks if you have to have packaged food.
Fizzy Suns & Moons! This science activity is so much fun for the upcoming solar eclipse! The day before, mix together baking soda, a little water, and liquid watercolor to create a paste/dough. Shape the mixture into balls and place them in the freezer overnight. The next day, mix together baking soda, a little water, and liquid watercolor to create a dry mixture that I placed on the bottom of my tray. Then, I put the baking soda balls in the tray. In a cup, pour vinegar and liquid watercolor (optional) with some pipettes or droppers. Add some dish soap to the vinegar for a different chemical reaction. The dish soap creates more bubbles that last longer for students to explore.
Students will use the droppers to pour vinegar into the tray and watch the chemical reaction. You can hear the fizzing as the 2 mixtures touch. You will also be able to see the mixtures foaming and bubbling. My little learners loved these hands-on projects during our solar eclipse study.
Eclipse Art! You will need a black piece of paper, a yellow circle, a gray circle, and sun-colored chalk. The first step is to glue the yellow circle (sun) on the paper and use the chalk to draw rays. Next, use a tissue to smear the chalk outwards. Then, talk about how the moon covers the sun during a solar eclipse and glue the gray circle (moon) on top of the sun. This is a great way for elementary school teachers to share with students about the sun’s corona.
Day/Night Science Table ! Immerse students in learning about the day and night with these science printables that were designed for little learners. There are vocabulary words, activities, and more! Students can learn about the things that happen during the day and during the night. You can also talk about where you are located and the rotations of the sun and moon.
Sun & Moon Art! Create the sun and moon with paper plates. This is a simple craft that young children can do to celebrate the solar eclipse or when they learn about space. Begin by having students draw circles/spirals with oil pastels. I break mine in half to help them go further in the art center. Then, use watercolors to paint the rest of the paper plate to complete the project.
Moon Science Table ! Explore the moon with your preschool, pre-k, and kindergarten students with this printable science unit. There are posters, vocabulary cards, activities, and more! Teach about the phases of the moon, the surface of the moon, and more with the included fact sheets and activities. I would also talk about the path of totality, which is if you are in the right area for the moon to completely cover the sun. A partial eclipse would also be discussed due to it being similar to the phases of the moon that we are studying. Depending on student interest, this is a unique opportunity to also share about lunar eclipses.
Solar Eclipse Ideas for Literacy
Moon Letter Hunt! Hide letters in pieces of foil beforehand. Then, have students open the foil, identify the letter, and trace the letter. Lastly, students rewrap the letter for the next student. This is great for arrival time, morning tubs, small groups, centers, early finishers, and more. This is great for any solar system study.
Moon Writing! Write on the moon (a piece of foil) with a dry-erase marker! It wipes right off and gives students a new sensory experience while they practice writing space vocabulary . Students can practice writing letters, sight words, peer names, or the science vocabulary words.
Space Writing Table ! Set up a space-themed writing table to give your students lots of opportunities to explore space vocabulary. Set out space-theme paper, space vocabulary, black paper and chalk, stickers, and more.
Space Letter Tracing Mats! Practice letter formation with these space-themed letter tracing mats . Laminate the cards and use dry-erase markers. For a fun, sensory option, give preschoolers play dough to form the letters.
Moon Syllables! Give students an opportunity to practice syllables with this silly space animal syllable game . Laminate the cards for durability. Then, place the number mats on the workspace. Give students the animal cards and have them count the syllables in each animal’s name.
Outer Space Books ! Check out my favorite space books for little learners here . There are fiction and nonfiction choices to keep your students engaged and learning during read-aloud time.
Solar Eclipse IDeas for Math
Number Space Shuttles! Build space shuttles while practicing numbers! Print on colored paper to save ink while creating this fun space math game . Students will be matching numbers, dominoes, and ten frames. If your students aren’t ready for so many options, take out the ten frames and dominoes and make the game easier. Then, students will just be matching the numbers. Differentiate the game by giving students the numbers they are ready for; Sven matches numbers 1-5, while Jacob matches numbers 1-10, and Josie matches numbers 1-20.
Space Patterns! Practice patterns with an out-of-this-world theme with your preschool, pre-k, and kindergarten students. Students can complete the patterns or create their own using manipulatives or markers. I like to use pom poms, mini erasers, and small rocks for my pattern cards .
Moon Art Printing! Use a paper plate, crumbled foil, and paint to create a beautiful and unique space art project. Crumble some foil into a wad; the looser the crumble, the more unique the painting is stamped on the paper. I used black, white, and gray paint to create a moon on a paper plate. Lastly, sprinkle glitter over the wet paint. I put my glitter in mini salt and pepper shakers for students to be able to use the glitter independently.
Sun Art Printing! Use a paper plate, crumbled foil, and paint to create a beautiful, unique space art project. Crumble some foil into a wad; the looser the crumble, the more unique the painting is stamped on the paper. I used yellow, orange, and gold paint to create an image of the sun with a paper plate. Lastly, sprinkle glitter over the wet paint. I put my glitter in mini salt and pepper shakers for students to be able to use the glitter independently. Paint printing is a fun way to complete open-ended art projects.
Space Blocks Center ! Set up a space-themed STEM or blocks center in your classroom. Use the space STEM cards to give students ideas to build structures and create blueprints of space vehicles and more. Set out foil balls (astroids/meteors), mini spacemen and aliens, and some rocketships to help their creativity at this hands-on activity.
You don’t have to come up with a ton of new ideas; repurpose things you have and add new information about the solar eclipse. Remember, if you are going to take your students outside to view it, make sure they have proper solar eclipse glasses. This is a great opportunity to share a special event with your younger or older students, even if you can only see a partial solar eclipse. Lastly, don’t forget to grab all the space printables and FREEBIE!

About Eclipses
An eclipse is an awe-inspiring celestial event that drastically changes the appearance of the two biggest objects we see in our sky: our Sun and Moon. On Earth, people can experience solar and lunar eclipses when Earth, the Moon, and the Sun line up. Safety is the number one priority when viewing a solar eclipse. Be sure to follow these safety guidelines when viewing a solar eclipse .
Quick Facts
Parts of the U.S. will experience a total eclipse in April 2024.
After the total solar eclipse on April 8, 2024, the next total solar eclipse that can be seen from the contiguous United States will be on Aug. 23, 2044.
We can't normally see the corona – the Sun's outer atmosphere – because Sun's surface below it is so much brighter. But during a total solar eclipse, the corona emerges, offering unique opportunities to study it.
An eclipse season is one of only two periods during each year when the Sun, the Moon and Earth are aligned, allowing eclipses to occur. Each season lasts about 35 days and repeats just short of six months later!
- Citizen Science
- Eclipse Types
Eye Safety During an Eclipse
Observing our star, the Sun, can be safe and inspirational.
Except for a specific and brief period of time during a total solar eclipse, you must never look directly at the Sun without proper eye protection, such as safe solar viewing glasses (eclipse glasses). Eclipse glasses are NOT the same as regular sunglasses; regular sunglasses are not safe for viewing the Sun. During a total solar eclipse, you must wear your eclipse glasses (or use other solar filters) to view the Sun directly during the partial eclipse phase. You can only take your glasses off during the short time when the Moon completely obscures the Sun – known as the period of totality. If you don’t have eclipse glasses, you can use an indirect viewing method , such as a pinhole projector, which projects an image of the Sun onto a nearby surface. It is safe to look at the Moon with unprotected eyes or through a telescope during all types and during all stages of a lunar eclipse.
Citizen Science Projects
Observing a solar eclipse is one of many ways to get in on the fun of doing science.
You can get involved with NASA science by participating in a number of NASA-funded citizen science projects. Citizen science projects are collaborations between scientists and interested members of the public. Through these collaborations, volunteers (known as citizen scientists) have helped make thousands of important scientific discoveries.
Know your eclipses!
There are four types of solar eclipses: Total, partial, hybrid, and annular.
The type of eclipse that people get to see depends on how the Moon aligns with Earth and the Sun, and how far away the Moon is from Earth. There are three types of lunar eclipses: total, partial, and penumbral. At least two partial lunar eclipses happen every year, but total lunar eclipses are rare. Unlike a solar eclipse, it is always safe to look at a lunar eclipse with the naked eye.
Science of Eclipses
Eclipses aren’t just beautiful – they’re great for science.
In addition to inspiring artists and musicians, eclipses have driven numerous scientific discoveries. For over a century, solar eclipses helped scientists decipher the Sun’s structure and explosive events, find evidence for the theory of general relativity, discover a new element, and much more. NASA scientists still study eclipses to make new discoveries about the Sun, Earth, and our space environment. Total solar eclipses are particularly important because they allow scientists to see a part of the Sun’s atmosphere – known as the corona – which is too faint to see except when the bright light of the Sun’s surface is blocked.
History of the Eclipse
Eclipses have fascinated humans from the beginning.
Throughout time, humans have had different interpretations of and reactions to these striking celestial events. In fact, historical records of eclipses from scribes in Anyang, China, helped astronomers at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory to determine how Earth’s rotation has changed over time. Determining exactly when the eclipse was seen and where the Moon's shadow fell on Earth helped the scientists calculate the rate of Earth's spin. The eclipses they used for this research were in 1226 B.C.E., 1198 B.C.E., 1172 B.C.E., 1163 B.C.E., and 1161 B.C.E.
